The Day I Arrived (Novel, Fiction)

Synopsis Nirmala lived in Nepal, where she was born, till the age of six. She’s an orphan and was adopted by an Italian family. Her early years were very hard: Nirmala refused everyone and everything. She did not agree to live where she felt a stranger. Then thanks to the love of her adoptive parents, the girl slowly found some peace. At school she becomes a good student and has got friends with whom she establishes deep and emotionally important relationships. Working on a project in class on personal identity, Nirmala, however, starts to remember something of her childhood (something she had forgotten) and then questions begin about herself and her identity. Nirmala wants now to understand where she comes from. Who are her real parents and why she was abandoned. A long journey, often difficult, in search of her roots then begins. A journey that will take her up to Nepal...

Excerpt “But you are not parents, how do you say, natural parents, aren’t you?” said Nirmala. “You are artificial parents. You can not love as natural parents can. Grandma Lidia told this to me one day”, she concluded, referring to Gabriele’s mother. Marina answered resolutely: “This is a great nonsense and you know it well. You know how long we had to wait before you could consider us your parents. And all that patience was not by chance, don’t you think? Not by chance! So much refusing! To reject us you had made up your mind to refuse even food. You went on for a whole year like this, and when it came to eating it was panic for me. You had become a wren. You could barely accept a spoonful of rice from us. No belly parents know - as parents by heart do instead – how difficult is the waiting to be loved and recognized as mom and dad. Quite the contrary than artificial parents!”
