6+ The Story of Vera (Picture Book) Synopsis Germany, 1945. The little Vera is imprisoned with her mother, sister and many other people in a German prison camp during World War II. Vera knows why she's there: some say that they are different from all the others, and this is why they have been locked up where they are now. But what does it mean “to be different from the others”? “Of course I'm different from the others, each one is different from every other, like trees, flowers, snowflakes are. This is pretty normal.” A modern fairy tale that shows the absurdity of discrimination (of all kinds of discrimination), and offers, in the innocent and unselfish vision that only children can have, importance and hope even where it cannot be seen.
Excerpt That night I dreamed. I dreamed of the camp and of the sleeping soldiers. I was walking in the snow, careful not to slip because I was bringing them a small gift to hang on the door of the guard house: a little piece of my big heart. It was not that big, just a little, but it was red and hot as a burning fire. When dawn came, the soldiers must have found my gift, because none of them cried that day neither with me nor with mom or anyone else of us. And when they walked, their boots did not make any noise.
