The Old dairy
Wykin | Hinckley | LE10 3EF
Believed to date back to the 17th century this four bedroom detached family cottage oozes a wealth of charm and character. The property has plenty of history and still boasts a few original features including a stone block with grooves in for pressing the cheese! The reception rooms downstairs have beautiful exposed beams and fantastic Wood Burners for those cold winter nights only adding to the feel of this wonderful family home.
A spectacular converted dairy house in an outstanding rural location within the smallest village in England. When Michelle and Andy first viewed The Old Dairy, 11years ago they were immediately attracted to the perfect combination of history and luxury.
Ground Floor The property is entered by a solid wooden door in keeping with the character of the whole property. The entrance hall is large and had previously been a library area, it is almost the size of a reception room. To the left there is a large Sitting Room with an old bread oven and off this room there is a further reception room that is currently being used as the dining room. To the right is the Drawing Room. The kitchen is accessed from the entrance hall, there is also a utility area and a downstairs WC.
Standing on the site of an old monastery this unusual property has a wealth of history dating back as far as 1605. As the name suggests, the current building is a thoughtfully renovated dairy house, with original outbuildings, bread oven and stones, which were once used for making cheese as a reminder to the property’s former life.
“The Old Dairy is thought to be the oldest house in the village,” says Michelle, “It is easy to imagine the history this building has seen. One notable feature are the wooden beams in the ceiling, in places you can see where they moved during the Coventry Blitz of 1940. From the elevated position on the hilltop you can imagine how frightening it must have been to watch the city ablaze.”
First Floor Upstairs with even more character and exposed beams in the landing. Then there are four good size bedrooms, the main one having a dressing area and an ensuite.
It is unusual to find a property with both traditional timber beams and high ceilings, yet this combination creates fabulous characterful bright spaces. The property has been extended throughout the years with Georgian and Victorian additions and has more recently been restored to an incredibly high standard. “The house has beautiful fixtures and fittings throughout,” continues Michelle, “We inherited the property with a fully fitted Clive Christian kitchen and have ourselves redesigned the bathrooms and re-instated many of the original period features”.
The family bathroom is spacious and impressive with fibre-optic lights in the ceiling. “It is a truly relaxing space to chill out in the bath, you feel like you are in an upscale hotel.”
The Old Dairy comes complete with a number of versatile outbuildings, which could be utilised as anything from storage and garages to a studio or office. “Andy’s hobby is building acoustic guitars, so it has been really handy having one of the outbuildings as a workshop, explains Michelle. “The outbuilding on the other side of the raised patio we have restored for use as an outdoor dining room. The patio is a great little sun trap perfect for alfresco dining and outdoor entertaining.” The grounds comprise of an enclosed private courtyard garden, making it the ideal property for children and animals. In the rear gardens there is an abundance of large mature apple, cherry and damson trees, the fruits of which make delicious homemade jams and chutneys. “The garden is full of colourful low maintenance perennials and we have a lovely ornamental pond and waterfall.”
Outside Outside the garden is beautifully landscaped, with a raised patio area providing wonderful space for a drink or a barbecue in the summer. There are several out buildings and workshops, including a studio with stained glass windows. The current owners use the outbuildings for a variety of hobbies and also for storage. Location Wykin Village is a beautiful village to the north west of Hinckley. The A5 is easily accessible which in turn connects the M69 to get to Leicester or to Coventry City where you can also connect to the M6. A fantastic location if you need great access to the Midlands motorway network. “It really is the best of both worlds here,” concludes Michelle, “We have our private rural lifestyle, and are part of an outstanding village community, yet we are still within good proximity of the local towns.” There are good schools in the neighbouring villages of Higham-on-the-Hill and Stoke Golding, as well as Morrisons and Sainsbury's supermarkets nearby.
