EDITOR’S LETTER
E
very day, every late night working with this is worth it. I’m so thrilled, dear readers, that I’m finally are done with issue number three of Fine Decor Magazine. It feels that I’m getting closer and closer to the magazine’s form factor and identity. I want to offer an exquisite mix of interesting interviews, inspiring articles and creative stories and everything free to read and free to share. I sincerely hope that you appreciate the magazine and the content. There are so many enterprising people out there, creative and inspiring. Meet for instance Paola from Mexico City, a young talented woman that dropped out from the financial Industry in London to pursue her dream. Or multitalented Linda Lomelino who didn’t get into a pastry cook school but who has now got her own book published, about cakes! What are the secret and the recipe to succeed as an entrepreneur? I have met with two successful businesses, one that helps us keep track of time and the other that serves us when we’re thirsty. Within this number I have extended the number of collage pages, brimming with beautiful products and pieces from around the world. One favorite that I’ve stumbled upon is a company in Mexico that amongst other things have designed the lamp on this page. Apart from interior decorations we also have put together a collage of rings and watches in various shapes and forms. “The Look” is a new collage page where I have selected some fine outfits that I would love to wear this summer. A Collier de Chien bracelet from Hermès is always right. Don’t miss out our Fashion Editor Stina Auers piece about this design classic on page 61. I have also the pleasure to introduce two new members of our crew; Anna Hollström who will compile and present our Fine Travel section, we will start off with a travel to French Polynesia. Furthermore, Mimmi Blomqvist is our new talented photograph and illustrator. I hope that the sun will shine upon you wherever you are this summer, and if bad weather or rain kicks in, I hope that you will find time and have a pleasant time reading our magazine. C
ONGRATULATIONS LINDA! YOU HAVE JUST GOT YOUR WONDERFUL BOOK “LOMELINOS CAKES” PUBLISHED! HOW DOES IT FEEL? Thank you! It feels fantastic and very unreal. I do not think I quite realized it yet. I HAVE FOLLOWED YOU FOR A WHILE ON YOUR BLOG AND KNOW HOW TALANTED YOU ARE IN BAKING, NOT JUST CAKES BUT ANY OTHER POSSIBLE SWEETS. WHEN DID YOU START BAKING CAKES? I actually started when I released the blog in summer 2009. I’ve never had anything passion for baking before. But I have always loved to eat pastries! I’m very fond of cakes and tarts and I always choose that in front of sweets. DO YOU HAVE ANY EDUCATION? I have not had any training, but I tried to get into a pastry chef school in Kristianstad, Sweden, for a couple of years ago but did not go in because I haven’t got the basic education. After that rather disappointing notification, I decided to apply for an education in Malmö, but did not get in because I had too good high school grades (!). It took to much energy so I decided to just ignore that and instead go my own way.
Well, with a little determination, I believe that almost anyone can do it! My cakes have very different levels of difficulty, but in general, I think most of the recipes are easier than you might think! But yes, first time I made a cake, I thought it was hard! Practice makes perfect as they say. However, I think that the recipes in my book are very simple to follow! FROM WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? Newspapers, blogs, books, etc. I think that the Swedish spring and summer time is incredibly inspiring! When I get inspired, I often get an urge to bake cakes. ’WHAT’S THE MAIN TOOL OR INSTRUMENT IN THE KITCHEN TO SUCCEED BAKING A CAKE, EXCEPT THE BOWL, TOOL FOR MEASURING AND A WHISK? A good bread pan! Preferably a pan that is half a feet in diameter and with a high edge. Other than that, I recommend getting an angled palette knife / spatula which is really good to have when doing the filling or the cover of the cake.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU BAKE? It varies a lot! Some weeks I bake three times, some weeks TELL US WHAT THE BOOK IS ALL ABOUT? not at all. It all depends on how much else I have to do! My book “Lomelinos cakes” contains extra high, extra I have a “regular” job as well so then it becomes not so luxurious, fabulous cakes! It is like a cake handbook if you much time to bake. will, with a really good manual at the beginning where I go through everything from baking trays to how to cover DO YOU ALWAYS SERVE HOME COOKED PASthe cake with butter cream. Each recipe is very carefully TERY WHEN DRINKING COFFEE? written and you should be able to follow it whether you I do not invite to a “fika”, as we say in Sweden, that often. are a beginner or not. In the book, one can find cream I prefer to go home to friends and bring something delicakes, frozen cakes, tarts with berries, cakes, chocolate, etc. cious with me! After I have baked and taken photos it is always chaos at my place and then you do not feel to CAN ANYONE BAKE YOUR DELISIOUS CAKES, invite people in for a coffee. u när jag väl bjuder så är det IS IT DIFFICULT?

IN ADDITION TO YOUR WONDERFUL AND SUPER NICE PASTRY, YOU’RE ALSO A TALENTED PHOTOGRAPHER, TELL US MORE! I studied media with focus on photography in high school so that was where it all began. However, I had trouble finding my thing in the art of photography and did not know quite what to make of it. Most often it was sporadic photo shoots. Since I wanted to start a pastry blog I realized I’d have to shoot all the cakes, to have something to show my audience! It took a while before I realized that food and pastry photo was really my thing. Nowadays, it’s half the fun and I love that I can combine my interests in the best way! AND IF THAT WAS NOT ENOUGH; YOU’RE ALSO PLAYING IN A MUSIC BAND? That’s right! I play bass and synth in a band called Death in the afternoon. That’s me and three guys, one of which is my fiancé. We play electro pop with a touch of the 80s
and new wave. At least that’s what I think it is, it’s hard to really put a label on our music! We’ve been out on the road playing in the southern parts of Sweden and recently we played at Debaser in Malmö, Sweden. Last year we played in Paris, France. It was great fun! Last year we released an album, and right now we are working on some new material. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BLOG? I run the blog www.callmecupcake.se which is both a recipe blog and a photo blog! Callmecupcake.se started out as a fun thing with no direct plan. However, my work with the blog has become more and more serious over the past year! I write in both English and Swedish since I have a lot of international visitors. DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE PLANS? Far too many! No, but I obviously want to make more books! I feel like I have so much to share with you all. I also would like to continue with the blog because I get so much nice feedback from it. Perhaps freelance as a photographer and as a food writer. Then I have some other thoughts that I cannot disclose just yet. I am so happy for the opportunities I got so I try to be grateful for them. Then I would like to have a vacation too, someday.

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR BLOG? I started my blog in 2009 when I was on maternity leave, and during that time I started to read other mom blogs. At that time there were not that many interior design blogs that appealed to me, with the typical Danish interior design in black & white.
WHO IS PETRA? My name is Petra, I’m 40 years old, married mother of three wonderful children. We live in central Västerås in the middle of Sweden in a very beautiful and popular area with many magnificent villas from the turn of the century. I’m self-employed and manage H.O.P. where I do various consulting work like painting, decorating and photographing. I also run one of Sweden’s largest lifestyle blog on the Internet; House of Philia.

The blog grew quickly and became very popular. It is fun with many readers and it is for them I produce the blog. I try to vary the content of the blog, and offer my readers both interior design stips, food, beautiful images, mixed with very personal. The relationship with my readers is important and I appreciate all the feedback I get. I want my blog to feel like a new glossy magazine; you almost know what’s in the next issue, but not exactly. u

A juice bar that puts the non-alcoholic drink into focus, where fast service is combined with solid raw materials, with a careful attention to the interior design mixed with healthy and tasty drinks with clever names, that’s what the Juiceverket is all about.

A
s soon as you get into the Juiceverket you’re stricken by the similarities to a real bar, behind the large bar that basically goes through the entire store, bartenders are working quickly mixing drinks. Even the music playing is reminiscent of a modern nightclub. But here they serve non-alcoholic drinks and smoothies with both quirky names and exciting content. Fine Decor Magazine went out early on a Sunday morning to have a chat with healthy Juiceverket that operates within the newly opened Mood mall in downtown

Stockholm. Juiceverket was founded in August 2011 in a small shop premises at Odenplan. The shop is still there and still has its loyal clientele, while new customers will easier find their way to Juiceverket Centrum. The premises are different also in terms of decor; the Odenplan store reminds more of grandmother’s pantry while Juiceverket Centrum should feel more like grandpa garage according to the four founders. This Sunday two of the co-founders are working, Claes and Andreas. During when drinks and smoothies are being served to customers stopping by, we talk about how and why four guys start a juice bar. It turns out that all four

have a background as bartenders, the founder quartet has forty years of combined experience from working in a more regular bar, even if Andreas Wilson is better known as an actor, starring in the blockbuster movie Evil (or Ondskan in Swedish). The drinks are quickly produced from scratch and as a guest you find yourself on front row when the drinks of various components are mixed together. Names like Country Morning Sumo with blueberries, vanilla, banana, yogurt and muesli or Morgonlemonaden containing carrots, ginger and orange, and their content differentiate Juiceverket from others who also have juices FINE DECOR MAGAZINE

and smoothies on their menu. Here you are met by a solid craftsmanship with new and exciting taste and combinations in smoothies and fruit drinks. The best seller is called Apple Fuzz with apples, raspberries, ginger and acacia honey. The goal is to offer a complete experience around the juice and we think they succeed in this. The interior has been created by the founders and as a guest, you surrounded by old shelves, fruit boxes and personal belongings that are somewhat haphazardly exposed. As a guest, it feels more like you’re a part of the decor than just looking at it. It is trendy, yet laid-back. While we are being served a variety of different fruit cocktails and smoothies, customers drop in and order their morning smoothie or juice drink. Along on our visit, is our ten-year assistant that takes place at the bar and taste of the drinks as they are being served. After a few samples we hear behind us a customer asking if one of the drinks wasn’t her drink, which also slipped into our assistant sample testing, everybody laugh at the situation. The customer is quickly served a new drink and order is restored. Customers will either take-away their juice or simply drink it on the spot. The feeling of being in a bar is total except the alcohol and the fact that it is early Sunday morning. It is more a nightclub feeling than a health bar. Customers seem to be a mix of people. According to Claes and Andreas, it depends on the time of day and what store we’re talking about. Office people are taking their morning juice on the go, many are taking a larger smoothie for lunch, after their lunch exercise, and in the afternoon comes the shoppers, strollers and high school youth. You get what you pay for. A smoothie blended from scratch, on site, in front of the customer, costs more than a prefabricated one. So expensive, yes, but the taste and the craftsmanship around the juice is worth the extra cost. The concept of a comprehensive solution around the juice without being solely a health bar seems to bear fruit (sorry!), the founders want to cautiously expand, and as long as their quality of drinks is preserved and their focus on taste and creating exciting décor continues, the chances are great that we will see more Juiceverket shops in the future. We are looking forward to that. u

What happened next, I heard rumors that you started a restaurant, in the Åland islands (located between Sweden and Finland)? Yes, that’s right. I simply felt after these intense years, that I really needed some peace and quiet. So I gather my belongings and headed to Åland. I was very much in the Åland Islands as a child, so it was no strange place for me. Once at the Åland Islands, I was offered to take over a restaurant. As cooking is, second to music, one of my great passions in life I simply went for it. The time for myself and the peace and slow pace at Åland was really rewarding for me that time.

INTERVIEW
KLOCKOR text FREDRIK GOTBORN photo/layout ANGELA GOTBORN
What time is it? The question has been asked many times. For some people it’s just enough to know the time, for some it is a symbol of the time we live in. We met up with half of the founder quartet of watchmaker TRIWA, Ludvig and Tobias, to discuss watches, art, colour and shape. FINE DECOR MAGAZINE
37
AUTOMATIC WATCHES Fully automatic watches have no battery, instead they are charged by the so-called kinetic energy produced by the wearer’s movement which create a rotor to move. The rotor in turn rewinds the mainspring, which then operates the clock. If not used, a power reserve keeps the clock running, usually 1-3 days.
FACTS
TRIWA was founded in 2007 by Ludvig Scheja, Tobias Ericsson, Harald Wachtmeister and Didrik Wachtmeister.
CHRONOMETER Chronometer is not a function but a license that the watch has passed several precision tests. If passing the tests the watch gets a certificate from Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC).

TRIWA, five years after your launch, how does it feel? L: It feels great, a lot has happened during those five years. How do you conceive your design, to be timely designed and to create trends? T: We have an industrial designer named Susanne Bargi that gets a lot of inspiration from the fashion world. Our design also inspired a lot of art. We work alongside artists in every collection release. It is above all the two parts, art and fashion, which is our major source of inspiration.
MECHANICAL WATCHES A watch that is not self-winding nor electrically driven is called a mechanical watch, and often has a power reserve. An semiautomatic watch has a battery or solar cell. Additional functions on a watch is called complications, one example is a stopwatch function. Watches with stopwatch functionality is called chronographs. Other examples of complications are calendar function or moon phase dial.
You have many interesting collaborations, which of them has been the most fun and most rewarding? L: I would probably choose Supakitch and Koralie, an artist couple who have understood their own commercial value and are driven by these kinds of collaborations. In addition, they get us to think in new directions. I was actually talking with them for a few days ago and they told me that for them as well, our collaboration has opened up many new possibilities. You need to find a level and a balance in a collaboration, which has the same thought and idea and not being afraid of the commercial aspects. How do you find potential partners? T: We met Supakitch and Koralie in New York on a trade fair about a year ago. Salong Betong (In English Salon Concrete) we just stumbled upon and the idea struck us; maybe we could use their tattooing skills in some way. L: We also get a lot of inquiries from people who want to design watches and have different ideas of cooperation; there must be a common link in the collaboration. Salong Betong was great, tattoos are now hotter than ever and they’ve been good at marketing themselves. Of all the collaborations we’ve done probably Supakitch has been the most fun to do. T: Supakitch and Koralie is a French street artist couple who often work in paintings, they often work by painting one side each of the same painting, and usually with manga inspired style. What is your primary target group? T: We could clearly see when we launched our first completely orange watch; Orange Revolution that it made its way to those people which we defined as our primary target audience, an audience that liked to stand out with the help of accessories. We summarize are primary audience as colorful urban individuals. Those who buy most watches are in the range of 18-35 years, 60% woman and 40% men. We have tried to make the collections a bit more unisex in recent years, to attract more men. u FINE DECOR MAGAZINE
39
Where are your market geographically? T: In terms of size, Sweden is still the largest with about 25% of market share, and often the closer to Sweden, the higher the turnover. Next comes actually Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Australia(!) and Germany. In the beginning you watches were light weight plastic and the focus was more on look and color. Today: more adult designs, Citizen Miyota movement, any new ideas? T: We knew early on that the product could easily fall into a trend segments. Other plastic clocks began to appear around us and we knew we could not get a patent on either color or material. But we realized pretty quickly that if we stayed on the same track we could not exist as a company after four to five years. So early on after starting with the colorful plastic clocks we started to develop their own models. We left gradually what we started with, but while trying to keep a common thread in our colour and design. T: Perhaps there might be more variations, like the purple and yellow watch that we currently produced, where you get an extra strap so you can change the appearance of the watch easily. Then chronographs always popular, people like the details of those watches. L: We need to have an extremely fast product development since we want to launch two collections per year. Then we tried to be efficient in keep in the number of products low, the new ones must replace the old ones. As long as we have a creative drive so that we constantly are able to replace and renew our collections. Do thinking of producing more technologically advanced watches? L: We actually launched a month ago, in collaboration with a company called Herr Judith. A watch with a fully automatic movement which is now sold out, it was a success! T: We are discussing internally whether we should have a so-called premium segment of our brand as others have but we have not really landed it. We’ve talked about making watches in other materials such as tungsten, ceramic, but probably watches made all-in metal will be our next thing.

How long does it take from your design idea until that the watches hits the street? T: It varies a little but it generally begins with a sketch that we produce and then the plant produces a sample of. The watches are assembled in China, with a movement from Japan. The watchstraps are made in Sweden. The process takes between 100-120 days. L: Today is a much more complicated design process. The watches have a body of metal, a strong Japanese clockwork, and then to the various bracelets. Nowadays, it’s a more complicated chain of processes before a model is complete. How much of your success is thanks to social media? Had it been possible without it? L: No, not so fast, anyway. T: We sought the assistance of blogs and social media very early in the start, before most people realized the commercial strength of bloggers. You have to be active on social media. We are now working a lot with our fan page and twitter to keep in touch with our customers and keep them informed of what’s happening and what we are working on. Is it stressful to have technological products that can break or stop working? You must have had a model that didn’t meet up to standards? L: Absolutely, it has taken time for us to do a really good watch. It has been a learning experience, and we have developed as a company. In the beginning we had an idea, designed a model and ordered up a stock. We now have a more controlled process and a structured selling - which is basically is based on what the customer wants. We also have partnerships that we talked earlier about; Herr Judith for example, where we can go outside the box a little bit more. But the main process is after all a “trade fair process”, we meet the market and discover what is demanded and then we design and create the product. L: We have learned much about the end customer and how we must act if a watch breaks or if a customer is dissatisfied. The goal is to swap a dissatisfied customer into a satisfied customer and we do so with the help of an efficient and courteous customer service. u

T: We’ve come so far that others are starting to copy us and force us to have an agile product development. We almost welcome others to copy us, because when they copied us, we are already somewhere else. We have to stay one step ahead, which is positive. L: A rapid product development is everything. It is incredibly important to be able to embrace a trend and then reach out to the customers. Meanwhile we must be able to remove some products to keep the number of products to a manageable number. And by that, you could remove products that are popular? L: Sure, it may be a bit of kill your darlings. People are constantly looking for change and it’s not so fun to enter a site and find the same old products all the time. You have the advantage of being able to sell in a variety of shops, tell us? T: That’s right, you could say that we have four branches; fashion boutiques, accessories shops, lifestyle stores and watchmakers. L: When it comes to the market of watches we think it needs some reinvention. If you go into a clock shop, it has not happened much in recent years and we want
to change that. We believe that it is possible to see the clock as a fast moving consumer product. We think the watch industry is missing out creativity and humor, which we hope we’re able to provide Who designs and who’s taking care of the naming? L: It depends, in our art collaboration with Supakitch we set out the framework and the technical specification of the watch and Supakitch chosen the acetate, colours and created the patterns. So it’s a mix. The product naming has been a fundamental part of your company, tell us? L: In the beginning, all means to get the brand recognized is extremely important. A good name of the product can open up many doors to blogs and other media. Today it is still as important to us but it has been supplemented with a package of whole development process like “Behind the scenes” during the creative process. We have invested more and more in storytelling about the design that we package and in that way trying to get exposure in blogs, newspapers and web. First, watches, then sunglasses. Do you plan to develop other accessories? T: Our main focus is our watches, but we will try to expand into developing other accessories. The important thing is that it is a visible accessory with a clear common thread to our design language. We think our sunglasses corresponds nicely with our watches , both in terms of form and design but also since both the watches and the sunglasses are made of same material, acetate. We are in the same material with a distinct color and design. T: The watches will always be the main focus for us but as long as an accessory complements the watch it may be an interesting product. We feel that we want to focus on a few products at the same time. Right now our accessory focus is on the sunglasses. Many companies are push out products, sometimes we have to restrain ourselves and realize that we need to focus on what we have. Everything we do must be commercially viable.u FINEDECOR DECORMAGAZINE MAGAZINE FINE

There’s so many interesting and captivating women and men out there, with marvelous style and lifestyles. We have decided to present some of the ones we find stand out for something new, something true and personal, that have a wonderful gift to put outfit’s together and combine the newest with something old and classic. In every new number, we’ll present two people with extraordinary style in one way or another, from all around the world, with different cultures and backgrounds. They will show us a part of their everyday style and fashion and let us be inspired with true passion. So let me start this search around the world by presenting one of on Greeks ultra fashionistas, an Athens based married woman with a dynamic and edgy style that stands for the boyish fashion that most of us has problem combining. But she does it with perfection. And perhaps that’s the true reason why net iconic pages such as Net-a-Porter have started to keep an eye on her: she plays with style. Super serious but in the same way like she couldn’t care less. Evangelie, who runs the fashion blog Styleheroine, has really become my daily heroine and I love her unexpected way of dressing. The other person I would like to introduce is from the high end of Mexico City (DF) and her name is Paola van der Hulst, a “Carolina Herrera makes love to Oscar de la Renta” femme fatale with a passion for shoes and anything ultra feminine. Her beautiful hair page makes her look like something from an old Riviera movie. She has a very personal style filled with treasures from her mother’s wardrobe, second hand finds and classics she has collected during the years. Her interest started very early and it has also become her work. The passion for fashion has taken it so far that she now works as a fashion illustrator. She also has a blog, the PvdH Journal where you can take parts of her stunning photos of creative outfits and outstanding illustration of the latest in fashion. So voilà! read, enjoy and be inspired! FASHION EDITOR’S CHOICE text/foto STINA AUER layout ANGELA GOTBORN
As fashion editor of Fine Decor, I thought that I would write about some special and about recent personal choices in every issue. It may also be a holiday destination or something that I would recommend. Summer has just started and I have chosen to spend nearly two months beyond Sweden’s borders. My man is from more southern lattitudes (Switzerland) and the Swedish summer is just too unreliable. There’s little that beats the italian villages and the beautiful areas around Lake Como in northern Italy and therefore we decided to explore Europe by car with nice hotels and places such Monaco and the South of France. During the summer months, there are so many excellent opportunities to dress chic and beautiful, with simple options that don’t need too many accessories to feel well dressed and stunning. I chose to invest in some new wonderful shoes for this summer, suitable for beautiful sunny days and evenings, but also enjoyable during the more chilly months. Stina Auer

Fendi’s black. At first, I wanted to purchase a pair of classic Pigalle from Christian Louboutin, but the brand feels slightly trite although they remain one of my personal favorites as both the shoe quality and the fantastic models never disappoints. But when I saw these black heels with rattan material and a large, black patent bow, I realized that no black heels are better than these. Price from €650

Greta-dresses
My collection of these super-simple beautiful little silk embellishments suitable for all sort of events. Perfect to ballerinas in summer walks, but equally suitable for more dressed up occasions. They are comfortable, stylish and very feminine. This lavender, short sleeve dress is my last buy from Kotyr.se, one of the best shops selling Greta. It’s so brilliant in its simplicity. Price from €330
Chanel Sandals
Flip-flops are all very practical, but I wanted something more stylish to put on my feet when walking to and from the beach or pool, that could also act the part during scorching days when you are wearing something simpler and yet want to feel well dressed. I tried to get hold of these sandals from Chanel last year already, but they were out of my size. In Zurich, I was however lucky enough a couple of weeks ago to bring a pair home with me. Price from €280
Alberto Guardiani Lipstick heels
Playing with fashion has always been something I find both attractive and entertaining if done with finesse and quality. I love checkered patterns on dresses and often find myself purchasing things with unimaginable patterns, like small aircrafts on a dress. Victoria Beckham made a lovely dress in a-line shape now at sping/summer with a red background and black cats. So unexpectedly fun and stylish when worh with the right heels. Fashion should be undemanding and creative and when I found these shoes with my man in Venice, there was not much to do but let them be mine. They must of course be worn with a simple outfit so as not to be vulgar or “too much” but with a red or black dress – it will be more than spot on. They are wonderful and curiously inspiring! Price from €540
Megan Park Necklace
Megan Park is an Australian designer whom I have become aware of this summer. I have a beautiful dress from her colourful drip pattern that has an asymmetrical shape. This necklace is also from her and although it actually is quite far from my normal taste and style, I really think it’s perfect to a plain white t-shirt or a simple dress. It creates something boheme chic that I like in the summer. Price from €270 FINE DECOR MAGAZINE

In order to get to know you a little, can you, with your own words, describe who you are? In a nutshell I am a fashion illustrator, designer (and overall food nut). I was born in Mexico City to a Mexican mother and a Dutch father and left home at 16 to attend boarding school in Connecticut in the US. Subsequently, I studied economics and finance at the University in St Andrews in Scotland and (as it usually happens following such a degree) I went on to work in finance for nearly three years in London. I decided to leave my job in finance on March 20th of this year and have since moved to Mexico to pursue my true passion.
54
What is style for you and how would you describe your own style? The quote by Coco Chanel of “fashion fades, only style remains the same” never fails to resonate with me when asked this question. For me style is innate to the person, and fashions should merely accommodate it. I think the best way to describe my style would be as classic with some personal quirks thrown in. FINE DECOR MAGAZINE
When did your interest for fashion begin and what was your first designer piece? It is hard to pin-point an exact moment when my interest in fashion began, as it is something which has always been present in my life in one way or another. From picking fabrics with my mother as a little girl, to going through some (perhaps style-questionable!) phases during my teenage years. Needless to say I have always experimented a lot. The first designer piece I purchased was a Burberry wrap skirt with a leather belt. And designer shoes, it was a pair of Marc Jacobs pink pastel heels. You just moved back to your home town Mexico City from years in London, why did you decide to do that and what is the biggest differences style and fashion wise? The decision to leave London came a lot hand-in-hand with my decision to leave my job in finance. I thought a lot about what I would do and ultimately decided that it u

You have such a special style; feminine, classic, bold, elegant but with a very personal twist and very often you take me back to the fabulous era of old Hollywood glamour, like the women of a art photography called ”Poolside Gossip” by Slim Aarons. Have you always been like that or where do you get inspiration from? My mother has incredibly classic and beautiful style, so I have always tended to gravitate towards that. I do, however, tend to experiment a lot more (and as I mentioned, did a lot of such experimenting in my early teenage years: from bohemian, to punk-ish, to ultra prep during my What do you put on a day/night when it feels like boarding school years). It was not until I moved to London that I became truly comfortable with my own style. you have nothing to wear, even if you stand inThis was the reason why I began to make a lot of my own front of a full closet? An incredibly drastic change, but thus far totally for the best. The differences in style between London and Mexico City are enormous, particularly when taking into account that London is one of the most ‘free’ cities when it comes to style. Mexico is more elegant and overall much more classic (you will definitely not see a lot of risk-taking when it comes to fashion as you do in London). Perhaps a good comparison would be Christopher Kane vs. Carolina Herrera.

You are a very talented illustrator, when did you realise that you had that gift and where would you most like your work to be published? Thank you! Art is something which has always been part of my life since I was very little, and which I carried on (as a hobby) while I was studying and working in finance. Illustration was what initially led me to start The PvdH Journal. It was a way to show my work to an actual ‘audience’. And my dream place to have my work published? Is it too obvious if I say Vogue? (!!!) What’s your most precious item in your wardrobe? I do not have one piece per say. What is more is that each season there are a few pieces which I tend to adore (and subsequently overdose on). Right now I am really about a couple of pairs of sandwashed silk pyjama trousers which I made, a pair of Celine platforms and Charlotte Olympia raffia sandals. Do you buy a lot of vintage and if you do, what’s the typical vintage piece that will follow you home? I used to buy a lot more vintage when I was a teenager u FINE DECOR MAGAZINE

(particularly in LA where there are some really great shops), but when I moved to London I began to scour through the vintage markets for fur coats. Most of my vintage finds, however, come straight out of my mother’s wardrobe. Either way my ‘typical’ vintage find will always tend to be more towards the classic side. If you had to choose between a wonderful designer bag or a awsome pair of shoes, what would you pick? I used to be all about ‘The Bag’ a few years ago, but as we became more and more bombarded by the so called itbags I switched my focus towards shoes (and I simply just love how designers focus more and more on shoes each season). Prada and Charlotte Olympia generally make my favourites, as they are both a bit on the quirky side at times. among many? Does it ever impact you negative to love fashion and style to the extend that you do? Perhaps because I am more towards the creative side of fashion, I tend to see it more as a creative outlet and as an art form rather than just about ‘consumerism’ per say. It is always incredibly easy to just talk endlessly about the work that you do (be it fashion, finance, art), so I do believe that whatever you do in life it is important to have a healthy balance and not have your head in just one place. u thepvdhjournal.com

Exclusive, iconic and mysterious
here are not many brands in present time that stand for something exclusive, iconic and as mysterious as Hermès. The main thought behind the iconic leather house of Hermès is quoted by Jean-Louis Dumas himself, chairman of the board and creative leader of the company from 1978 to 2006, giving a clear definition of the drive and recipe for success: ”We don’t have a policy of image, we have a policy of product and we will continue to make things the way the grandfathers of our grandfathers did”.
There’s a very unique selection of collectors items from Hermès that stands out because of it’s very ”un-Hermèsness”. The brand is known to stand for a typical elegant and classic touch that Hermès is so renowned for. The Collier de Chien, named by true collectors as ”CDC”, is in comparison to the normal products of Hermès, more bold and a rougher accessory; it really stands out from the different collections usually found in the house of the best handcraftmanship.u FINE DECOR MAGAZINE

FINE STYLE
In French, Collier de Chien actually means “dog collar” and this Hermès piece was originally inspired by the belt that was created in the early 20s specifically for a client’s bulldog, by Émile-Maurice Hermès from the third generation of the Hermès family. This style evolved in 40’s and is currently declined in different accessories such as bracelets, belts, clutches, rings… etc, but it wasn’t before Pierre Hardy´s entrance into the Hermès house in 2002 that it really reached the masses around and the world and people were obsessed with the collection as it became the absolute accessory for high end status . Collier de Chien became in fact so successful and popular that both the ring and the bracelet were pointed out in the house’s annual report of 2009. Émile-Maurice Hermès (born 1871, †1951) is one of the main characters in the history of Hermès, having not only come up with the idea of the Collier de Chien, but also added a multitude of classics to the company’s repertoire, such as the forever popular silk scarf that in present history is a synonym of the exclusive family company, and also a collectors item among women all around the world and the best present from a trip abroad.
The most famous accessory of the Collier de Chien collection is by far the bracelet. Throughout the years, it has gone from the classic togo or box leather to be produced in pure hardwear and with embrodery and other limited editions. Recently, Hermès has also introduced the full palladium Collier de Chien model which was an instant hit with loyal fans of Hermès and was featured in almost all the important fashion magazines. The ones in pure hardwear are double the price of a regular piece with calf leather, generally priced about 1000 euros.

The iconic bracelet is available in a variety of colours and can be ordered in different exotic materials such as crocodile, snake or ostrich, to name a few. The hardwear normally comes in palladium or gold plate, but can also be specially ordered in rose gold.
At the end of the year 2000, the gold hardwear was the most popular, but nowadays it’s produced more in palladium which in turn makes the gold plated pieces much rarer and also harder to find. With windows overlooking two flaunted gardens, creaking herringbone parquet, double doors and extra high panel, this classical apartment is situated a short distance from Stockholm downtown at the city pulse of Stureplan and the green oasis of Humleg책rden, a large park right beside Stureplan.

The apartment was given a new planning, where the small kitchen with a private entrance to the bedroom and one of the two great living rooms, were converted into a large functional kitchen.

FAKTA In this wonderful apartment lives Hanna, along with her husband and three children. Hanna is a finance graduate who changed career path and started her own business in interior design, Svahn Living, where she project manages refurbishment and provides a comprehensive concept for private clients. Each project is unique and tailored to each client’s specific need.

hen Hannah and her husband were looking for a new home, there were some practical requirements. With three children, a large circle of friends and Hanna with her profession as interior design consultant / project manager, there were a lot to consider. After a lot of searching the family finally found their dream apartment. The apartment was in great need of renovation, but Hanna didn’t saw that as a disadvantage, rather the opposite. Hanna had a lot of ideas so even before the purchase she had started the renovation. The apartment is located on one of most posh neighborhood in Östermalm in Stockholm, is 170 square meters with 6 rooms and kitchen, overlooking two lush courtyards. The apartment is from the turn of the century with all classic attributes like large double doors, high baseboards, creaking parquet and tiled stoves. The living room has unusually high and fine panels along the walls and three large beautifully paned windows. The floor plan was redesigned and the old kitchen, which was overshadowed by a private entrance, was moved to one of the great lounges and became a modern kitchen, with a large and highly functional kitchen island, where the entire family can eat breakfast together. u

After the rebuilding and relocation of the kitchen the apartment became more practical with bedrooms separated from the living area. During the renovation all floors were polished and new herringbone parquet was installed in the kitchen. A thick bright carpet covers all floors in all four bedrooms. A smart wardrobe solution was installed and the somewhat tricky shaped bathroom was fully renovated. White Carrara marble was used on the walls of the shower and on the bathroom floor. An extra-large basin was installed with a large corresponding mirror above. In addition to the bathroom the apartment also consist of a small guest bathroom and a small laundry room with separate shower. All the walls and the ceilings were painted white. Baseboards and panels too. u

Both the size of the project and the budget may vary when Hanna is decorating and manage a project. Ingenuity and a lot of imagination are sometimes required to achieve something that looks more than it actually is. Seeing possibilities is an important characteristic of an interior designer and an attribute that is used as well in their own homes. A brilliant example is the beautiful wardrobes in the bedroom. A place built wardrobe is sometimes very expensive but if you are a little handy you can get an equally nice closet that Hanna has, to a considerably less cost. TIP FROM HANNA! The wardrobe and its interiors are from Ikea. I have replaced the knobs to beautiful ones in shiny gold and then I had a carpenter make a frame around the wardrobe so that it’s perceived as custom built. In the pull-out drawers you can store everything from jewelry, belts, beautiful scarves and cute underwear. It is a feast for the eyes when you open the drawers. u

osef Frank is the master of patterns. In Sweden, his furniture design has a loyal fan base and is often used in stylish homes. Through the popularity in Sweden other markets have been discovered Josef Frank furniture and designs. Many people outside Sweden are fascinated by Josef Frank and his work is perceived as an exotic element and is considered to be very exclusive.
with Josef Frank’s creativity. It’s hard to imagine that Josef Frank was 50 years of age when he immigrated to Sweden in the 30’s from Austria with his Swedish wife, and made his breakthrough as a designer of Svenskt Tenn, a few years later. Josef Frank was very productive and there are over 2000 furniture layouts and over 160 designs sketches that bears his name in Svenskt Tenn’s archives.
Fine Decor Magazine would like to emphasize and celebrate creative people, who through their talents and efforts give us things to admire, use and appreciate. Few can compete
Josef Frank did not like conformity and monochromatic environments, which in those days was the prevailing design ideals, and which Joseph Frank sums up with:

“The monochromatic surface appears uneasy, while patterns are calming, and the observer is unwillingly influenced by the slow, calm way it is produced. The richness of decoration cannot be fathomed so quickly, in contrast to the monochromatic surface which doesn’t invite any further interest and therefore one is immediately finished with it.” Through his creativity, talent and work Josef Frank and Svenskt Tenn was recognized at
the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 for its bold design and choice of colours. Because of this Joseph Frank and Svenskt Tenn became synonymous with the term Swedish Modern. By the time of the end of the Second World War Josef Frank moved to New York where his most famous pattern was created; for instance Manhattan. Much has been written about Josef Frank, so we let some of his creations and patterns speak for themselves. With this article, Fine Decor Magazine says: Thanks Josef Frank, without you and your work we would have had a much grayer and sadder world to live in. u

DECORATE CHEST OF DRAWERS by ANGELA GOTBORN
A chest of drawers, a desk, shelf, etc. can all be decorated nicely with various ornaments. Here I show you how to decorate a chest of drawers. If you use it as a bedside table you simply add a lamp. Please see previous issue of Fine Decor Magazine of a decorated a nightstand.
116
FINE DECOR MAGAZINE
The chest of drawer on the image has been painted in a light grey colour that fits nicely with the handles in brass. The grey is then picked up both in the lampstands which is light Carrara marble and in the acrylic painting I painted in a rather sloppy graphic pattern, also in two different shades of grey. Then I chose the accent colours, pink and orange, which became the main theme and used a bit more than other colours.
Accessories and decorations are carefully chosen to suit the texture and colour. Books are always a given decoration; I also covered one of the books in a beautiful tapestry that picked up the pink. Small glass boxes of jewellery, a skin cream, two nice boxes and a platter of gold, which picks up the lamp shades gold hue. In addition to this, fresh cut flowers, is a must. I wanted to create a sweet sensation and therefore I concluded the styling with tying two bows in pale pink velvet on the two top handles. u

he house from the early 30’s is located in a beautiful area in the center of Västerås and is 210 square meters distributed on two floors. When the family bought the house five years ago, it was a pretty boring house with yellow brick facade, worn parquet and with bright colors on both walls and tiles. But there were goodies like the brand new Kvänum kitchen, beautiful in white classical style, with luxury appliances and complete mechanical equipment. Petra and her family changed the entire colour scale to white and grey. The red beech laminate in the kitchen were replaced by grey wooden floor, even the colourful tiles were changed to the classic white and almost all the way up to the ceiling. Walls and ceilings were painted white and the family got their dream kitchen. The remaining rooms were painted white. The floors were waxed white and a new entrance was built along with a guest toilet. The exterior of the house was completely renovated. Walls were rubbed with white plaster. New hubs, a new porch railing, new patio door and all windows were renovated.

PLEASE NOTE The following recipe is taken from the book Lomelinos tårtor (Lomelinos cakes), published by Bonnier Fakta, 24th of April 2012. We have kept the recipe in Swedish. If we manage to get hold of a proper translation approved by Bonnier Fakta we will present this later on our site. You can read more and also buy the book here
COOKIES ´N´ CREAM
8–10 BITAR OREO- OCH VANILJBOTTEN 50 g rumsvarmt smör 2 dl strösocker 1 1/4 dl mjölk 1 tsk vaniljextrakt 2 1/2 dl vetemjöl 1/2 tsk bakpulver 1 stor äggvita 8 normalstora oreokex CHOKLADBOTTEN 25 g rumsvarmt smör 1 1/2 dl vetemjöl 1/2 dl kakao 1/2 tsk bakpulver 1/2 tsk bikarbonat 1 1/4 dl strösocker 1 medelstort ägg 3/4 dl mjölk 1/2 dl kokande vatten FYLLNING 300 g philadelphiaost eller annan färskost 2 dl florsocker 3 dl vispgrädde 6 normalstora oreokex DEKORATION 10–12 normalstora oreokex 10–12 minioreokex körsbär
OREO- OCH VANILJBOTTEN 1. Värm ugnen till 175°. 2. Smörj och mjöla två små formar, cirka 15 cm i diameter. 3. Vispa smör och socker vitt och pösigt, i cirka 3 minuter. 4. Tillsätt mjölk och vaniljextrakt och vispa till en jämn smet. 5. Blanda mjöl och bakpulver och häll ner i smeten. Tillsätt äggvitan och vispa i ytterligare 2 minuter. Krossa kexen och blanda ner dem. Fördela smeten jämnt i de två formarna. 6. Grädda bottnarna samtidigt i ugnen, i cirka 25 minuter. 7. Häll smeten i formen. 5. Grädda bottnen i cirka 30 minuter. u

FYLLNING 1. Blanda färskost och florsocker i en skål. 2. 3. Bred ut fyllningen utan oreokex över tårtan i ett jämnt lager. DEKORATION 1. Smula de normalstora kexen i en mixer. 2. 3. Dekorera med några minioreokex och ett körsbär. BYT UT KAKORNA Istället för oreokex kan du självklart ta just dina favoritkakor!

TRAVEL The best way for a contrasting experience of polynesia is to see a few different islands, as each of them has their own charm. With topographies from lush volcanoes and dramatic waterfalls to coral reef atolls with either white, pink or black sand and lagoons filled with fish in vibrant colours. As soon as you get off the plane you understand why the artist Gauguin left europe never to return, and why Marlon Brando chose to buy a private island here. Everywhere we go, people greets us with a smile and a Ia Orana. The year-round blossoming Tahiti Tiare, also known as Gardenia are in gardens, in the hair of the local women and used as decorations to greet visitors to the islands. Vanilla is grown in some areas and is widely used. The extract was traditionally used as a medicine but is now limited to flavour most of the food, from the rice to fish and chicken and fresh fruit and even in rhum. The french influence is still strong in politics and the official language, and baguettes and patisseries can be found everywhere. Groceries, wines and most of the waters served in hotels are either Evian and Perrier, imported all the way from France wich is reflected in the prices. This is not the place to be on a tight budget. The larger hotel resorts can be seen with their characteristic string of overwater bungalows. With private patios and stairs down into the water and with glass floors for guests to enjoy the sharks and rays swimming by underneath. If you want to get even closer to them there are serveral excursions where you can swim with and feed them. They are very curious and get close enough to be petted. u

Bora Bora is unarguably the most famous of the islands of Tahiti. Most of the luxury resorts are scattered along the same line of tiny private islands. Mt. Otemanu rises from the middle of the lagoon and is surrounded by crystal clear water in hundreds of shades of turquoise and blue. Most of the hotel enclaves offer equally beautiful beaches, and with several options of restaurants and with everything in reach ensuring total relaxation and indulgence. We chose Le Meridien for our stay because of their sea turtle conservation project. With a large lagoon inside the lagoon you get to swim with more than 30 friendly sea turtles closer than you would ever be able to in the wild. When in Bora Bora, a visit to the famous restaurant Bloody Mary´s is a must. The place has a great ambience and proudly displays a board outside with international celebrities that have dined here. u

At the more laid back atoll islands you will get closer to the locals, who happlily share their traditions with you while playing the ukulele. During the vey memorable trips and excursions guests are encouraged to participate in cooking the fresh meals, and in the preparations as braiding palm leaf baskets to cook the freshly caught fish and rice amd the classic dish ”Poisson cru”-lime and coconut marinated tuna and coconut bread. In the lagoons inside the coral reefs tropical fish are living peacefully without being disturbed by the larger predators. The snorkelling is unbeatable and divers find a spectacular underwater world with sunken ships, big sharks, stingrays and dolphins just outside the reefs. The perfect souvenir to bring back as a reminder of your dream vacation is the legendary and exclusive black pearls only found in the area. With every imaginable shade and colour, each and everyone is truly unique and different from another, just like the islands of polynesia. u FINE DECOR MAGAZINE
