Good news for followers of Fine Music Sydney on our social media platforms this month. As soon as our new website is launched in September, readers will be able to access this magazine without the paywall or a subscription, which will effectively increase our potential readership by a factor of ten!

After some discussion, we have decided to relabel our In Conversation interviews. Starting this month, the Q&A discussions with musicians, organisations, and prominent individuals (who usually but not exclusively adorn the cover) will be known as First Person, which should prevent any confusion with Fine Music Sydney broadcasts of the same name. Our first interviewee under the new moniker is Angela Brewer, Artistic Director of Coast Opera Australia which, like many others, is struggling to survive with the lockdowns and prohibition of regular live performances. We hope in future to be able to bring you news of how other musical companies and orchestras in the Greater Sydney area are faring during these challenging times. Lastly, before anyone froths at the mouth wondering why we could possibly be bothering to write about 1970s crooners, discover the achievements of the original Engelbert Humperdinck, in Paul Cooke’s article on page 11! david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Taverner to Tavener

Neil McEwan explores A Who’s Who of English Church Music

The history of English church music began well before the Reformation – Gregorian chant and sacred texts in Latin dominated choral music. Composer

John Taverner was appointed Organist and Master of the Choristers at Christ Church Oxford by Cardinal Wolsey in 1526. Taverner’s Western Wynde Mass, one of his few surviving works, is still sung liturgically to this day.

In the 16th century, under the reign of Henry VIII, there was conflict between Catholics and Protestants, and monasteries and abbeys were dissolved. The period produced a number of Tudor composers such as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd who wrote magnificent music which spanned these turbulent times, including If ye love me, by the former and Sing joyfully, by the latter.

During the reigns of James I and Charles I in the first half of the 17th century, Orlando Gibbons set English texts for choir, often with the addition of instruments. This is the record of John is one of his famous anthems. One of his contemporaries, Robert Ramsey, is probably best-known for his anthem How are the mighty fallen

After the new heights of beauty which church music achieved in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, utter devastation followed under Oliver Cromwell, with the desecration of great cathedrals and ‘throughing down of great organs’. At Westminster Abbey ‘they break down the organs, and pawned the pipes at several ale houses for pots of ale’. In its place, instrumental music flourished, including the Pavan for 2 Bass Viols by John Jenkins.

With the glorious restoration of Charles II, composers such as Henry Purcell, one of England’s greatest musical geniuses, added to the prestige of England’s liturgical and secular music. His O Sing unto the Lord is representative of this period, as is John Blow’s motet Salvator mundi

The use of instrumental forces popular in Continental church music did not take hold in England in the same way. English anthems and settings for Evensong were usually sung a cappella, or with organ accompaniment with occasional instrumental ensembles used from time to time. One of the foremost composers of the time was William Boyce, who wrote the coronation anthem Praise the Lord O Jerusalem.

After the moribund situation of English cathedrals, the influence of the Oxford Movement in the 1840s began to see the rise in status of liturgy and music. Composer and organist Samuel Sebastian Wesley was ‘a lifelong fighter for better conditions’ for church music. Wesley aside, composers such as Thomas Attwood Walmisley, Sir John Stainer and Charles Wood wrote mostly fine music for church liturgies. Continued reforms at the end of the 19th century inspired works by Parry, Stanford, and Elgar, among others.

Perhaps one of the most revered musicians during the 20th century is Herbert Howells, whose settings for the canticles at Evensong are greatly loved and sung by many choirs. His Magnificat from Collegium Regale is worth seeking out. Among a number of composers of this period, John Tavener contributed much to church music. One of his most moving choral pieces is Song for Athene, which was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana in Westminster Abbey in 1997.

First Person –Coast Opera Australia

Tell us a little about your professional background...

Truth be told, I’m quite an accidental opera singer. Although my parents and extended family have an appreciation for music, going to the opera was not our usual form of entertainment. My introduction to singing was learning to play piano, classical guitar, cello, and in Grade 2, training in a choir outside of school. This put me in good stead with music history and theory, and taught me how to sight-read music, often four-part harmony, with sol-fa, unaccompanied and in foreign languages. I was recognised to have a voice for operatic repertoire and completed an Honours degree at Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University, under consecutive scholarships. At the age of 22 I was invited to begin singing with Opera Australia.

Setting up a new opera company would be hard enough in a major city with many potential opera lovers. What motivated you to choose the Central Coast? Realising there was a need, desire, and curiosity, and that there were artists living here on the Coast who had to leave and commute to work professionally in all areas of theatre, not just as vocalists or instrumentalists. Opera encompasses all areas of the Arts – singers, instrumentalists, actors, dancers, set designers, you name it – the list is endless and one of the few art forms that is so inclusive! The Coast already had a community orchestra, and vibrant groups of music lovers such as the Gosford Musical Society, the developing Conservatorium and other private teaching studios. However, established artists such as myself had nowhere to work at the standard I was accustomed to, especially if they had also worked internationally or were expecting to be paid professional rates.

Do you think your approach could be a model for other regional areas in Australia with similar challenges?

We are not the first with this idea, however I hope we can encourage and inspire more regional areas to do the same, especially once Covid restrictions ease. Our communities will have a hunger like never before to get outside, socialise and be entertained.

Coast Opera’s performances are very well attended. Do you think that there is an untapped appetite for classical music and opera outside of the capital cities in Australia?

Yes, I have found an even stronger desire for world-class events since they didn’t exist on the Coast in the past. It’s an exciting treat for our audiences to have a singer walk off the stage at La Scala in Italy, and the next day be performing with Coast Opera Australia.

COA has sung in swish restaurants, RSL clubs, a stadium, and even at car launches. Are these just pragmatic choices in the absence of a dedicated performance space on the Central Coast, or a different way to interface with the general public?

Our community deserves and expects honesty and directness from me on this topic. Despite decades of promises by the local Council and pre-election funding commitments by the NSW State Government, there is no real indication when this performance space project will go ahead, particularly after the recent revelation of Council’s indebtedness. COA is encouraging those in positions of power to listen to our artistic community’s request and build a multipurpose, regional performing arts venue here in Gosford, the heart of the Coast!

If that were to happen, would you continue performing in ‘unorthodox’ venues?

Absolutely. We want to showcase the beautiful Central Coast with outdoor and indoor musical events that entice people to our region. Coast Opera Australia is community-focussed with an entrepreneurial approach, such as Salute to the Anzacs or Disney to Diva from the Central Coast Stadium which was viewed online by hundreds of thousands nationally and internationally.

It’s a common complaint amongst opera companies that they are obliged to serve up a familiar diet of well-known works such as Carmen, Don Giovanni, and La bohème, or risk losing their audience with new or unusual repertoire. Is this something that concerns you?

I think it’s important to acknowledge the history of Opera and provide some well-known works, however we are not trying to compete with companies like Opera Australia which are already well established. COA is here to provide new musical experiences, entice our faithful audience members, and develop a new market for future sustainability. Opera Afloat at Saddles at Mt. White is a classic example of mixing the old with the new.

I see our future as very positive. Yes, it has been challenging to navigate Covid, however just like other past diseases society has controlled, I am certain we will be out of the woods and back on stage performing very soon. Our priority is to protect the health of our audiences, performers, and those who get the show on the road for the benefit of us all. Due to the present Covid restrictions, Coast Opera Australia has once again redesigned our concerts for an online platform. In August we will be announcing our four-part series Backstage Q&A. This will be a live, interactive conversation with professionals from the music industry. Our audience will be able to submit their questions on any topic relating to the professional lives and experiences of our artists; a great opportunity to find out how opera really works from an intimate, behind-the-scenes perspective.

What are your thoughts for the future of Coast Opera, given that we may be forced to live with COVID-19 for quite some time?

The Quiet Achiever

Los Angeles native, journeyman, keyboardist, composer, and producer John Caroll Kirby began his career as a session musician in the early 2000s. Having graced Grammy-nominated songs by Norah Jones (Chasing Pirates) and Solange (Cranes in the Sky) as well as providing colour and tone on recordings by Sébastien Tellier, Bat for Lashes, Frank Ocean, Harry Styles, Madeleine Peyroux and more, Kirby’s session work CV is nothing short of prolific and held in the highest regard.

In 2017, Kirby branched out and started making his own albums, a series of personal recordings reflecting his influences, lifestyle, and immediate surroundings. His sound oscillates between ambient and new age, progressive and free form jazz, easy listening, and neo-soul styles, all of which encapsulate his humble but nuanced ability to remain a strong presence throughout the recording process without having to steal the limelight.

Raised in a Pasadena home that once belonged to the influential architect Charles Greene, it is within the Arroyo Seco area of Los Angeles that Kirby feels at home. It was here in 2020 that he realised the album that gained him international exposure, entitled My Garden. Released on the influential and cult record label Stones Throw, My Garden was a glimpse into Kirby’s surroundings that were the most geographically personal to him. There is even a track on the album recorded in Sydney whilst staying with a friend at Tamarama Beach, entitled By the Sea

During the past year and a half, Kirby has used the abundant time and space to reflect and record a cathartic album reflecting on lockdown that has a melancholy beneath the bounce. The album is Septet, a change in direction from his five previous releases in that he enlisted a group of musicians to assist: Deantoni Parks on drums, Tracy Wannomae and Logan Horne on woodwinds, JP Maramba on bass, Nick Mancini, mallets and David Leach on percussion. It’s through this fleshed out lineup that the recent album marks a slight change in his sound.

Septet was recorded live in Kirby’s studio and has a certain 1970s jazz fusion sound to it. Improvisational in parts, it reveals its depths further upon each listen. At first, the cosmic melodies, jazz-funk grooves, heavily layered horns and percussion rhythms can be experienced almost as background music; seemingly the album wouldn’t sound out of place on a typical Spotify Chill Jazz playlist. However, it’s the subtleties of Kirby’s keyboard wizardry underpinning the guest players—studio session experts all—where the magic starts to happen. It’s more a spiritual than a physical listening experience.

I want to entice people. I understand that there’s other stuff that they could be listening to, and don’t want to make things too complicated.

Despite Kirby’s exquisite finesse, he’s no stranger to the odd improvisational misstep, such as a flubbed chord on the keyboard during one track. Rather than insist on a retake, he chose instead to incorporate it into the song. “As a jazz musician, it’s fun to play with being irreverent, it’s fun to play with mistakes. Sometimes even in my work as a session musician, I’ll try to do that. I might try to create a character who’s playing the piano, not necessarily me, who might be drunk or something and who would make mistakes. I enjoy playing with that kind of stuff,” he once proclaimed in an interview with the music magazine Fader

Influenced by the easy, laid-back West Coast jazz sound created by icons such as Art Pepper and Shelly Manne, Kirby finds solace in instrumental compositions rather than vocal intrusions. He claims: “As you’re composing, you’re not being told what the song is about because of the words. You’re free, because you can create this melody, and you’re letting the meaning of the song develop as you’re composing. I want to entice people. I understand that there’s other stuff that they could be listening to, and don’t want to make things too complicated.”

More than a one-hit wonder

One of my earliest musical memories is of watching Hansel and Gretel on ABC television sometime in the mid sixties, with those roles played by Brian Gilbert and Jacki Weaver but sung by Marilyn Richardson and Janet Rutledge. I was of an age when the attraction would have been seeing the fairytale come to life: I knew nothing of the composer, the centenary of whose death we are commemorating this month.

For a composer nearing 40 years of age, Hansel and Gretel was a turning point for Humperdinck. He became famous overnight and financially independent, receiving more than 400 unsolicited librettos from hopeful collaborators. Humperdinck was fêted by his contemporaries: Richard Strauss, to whom he had sent the completed score, conducted the premiere of Hansel and Gretel in Weimar in 1893 and thought it ‘a masterpiece of the highest quality’, praising its ‘heartwarming humour’ and its ‘delightfully naive musical idiom’. Mahler conducted it in Hamburg within the year, and Brahms attended the first performance in Vienna, where it was accorded ‘a great success ... The composer was called for 16 times by the enthusiastic audience’. It was very quickly being performed in opera houses throughout Europe and finally made its way to Australia in 1907, opening in Melbourne on the afternoon of Saturday 6 April. Press reviews of the time noted that the music was splendidly played, but that Johanna Heinze (playing the Witch) “cavorted round on the broom in a manner so unreal and amateurish that it would have saved her from the pond and the stake a couple of hundred years ago”.

The success of Hansel and Gretel can possibly be attributed to the way Humperdinck synthesised his various influences. Supernatural themes had held sway in German opera since Weber’s Der Freischütz, but Humperdinck infused this with a seriousness deriving from Wagnerian harmonies and orchestration and reflected in undercurrents of poverty and deprivation. At the same time, he leavened the portentousness with tuneful melodies, often influenced by folk song.

Humperdinck composed four other operas and also worked in other genres. Most of his chamber music was written during his student years, before he had come under Wagner’s influence; while it was not his preferred mode of expression, he composed music for the private circle of the judge, and amateur violinist, Johannes Degen. Between 1905 and 1908 he wrote incidental music for a variety of Shakespeare’s plays. These were taken up and performed in more than 300 theatres up until World War II, and Humperdinck himself adapted them into suites for concert use. The composer was increasingly unwell from about this time. He would occasionally take rest at the Berlin villa of Isadora Duncan (he had apparently once written music for her to dance to). Humperdinck suffered a stroke in 1912, causing permanent paralysis of his left hand; in 1914 he applied for the position of director at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but was unsuccessful, due both to his ill-health and his nationality. He continued to compose, completing Gaudeamus, with his son Wolfram in 1918, and in 1920, a string quartet which harked back to his student days. Humperdinck died in 1921, the day after attending a performance of Der Freischütz for which Wolfram was stage director.

In the Shadow of Sibelius

In writing his obituary, music critic and champion of neglected repertoire Martin Anderson described Joonas Kokkonen as ‘the most important figure in Finnish musical life after Sibelius’. Kokkonen has also been described as Sibelius’ ‘spiritual successor’. For those of us less au fait with Finnish composer chronology, it could be supposed that Kokkonen was a teenage acolyte of Sibelius, reaching adulthood as the latter declined.

It’s a romantic idea, but alas … Kokkonen, who would have turned 100 this year, lived half of his life in Sibelius’ shadow; he was just 35 when Sibelius died in 1957. It is more likely that he had to tussle with the great man’s fame. Perhaps this is why his ‘breakthrough’ orchestral work was only written the year Sibelius died.

The question is, how does a composer find his own voice when his world is dominated by such a luminary? Sibelius’ symphonic writing influenced not only Finnish composers, but also inspired British ones to pick up their pens. Elgar inspired the British symphonic revival, but it was Sibelius who held the allure for composers such as Arnold Bax and Vaughan Williams. Sibelius was not just a great artist – to the small Finnish nation, he was its voice, his music the essence of its long-fought independence. Accordingly, the year Kokkonen turned 18, the Helsinki Music Institute was renamed in Sibelius’ honour. Ten years later, Kokkonen would become a lecturer there, the shadow looming long...

By the time Kokkonen came to write his first symphony, he was experimenting with serialism. This dalliance is characteristic of his middle period (c. 1959-1967), though Kokkonen was far from a zealot. Indeed, his love of harmony led him to twist the rules of dodecaphony to educe triads (chords) out of his tone rows. In Anderson’s words, Kokkonen was ‘too much of a humanist to write music that didn’t appeal to the heart as much as to the brain’.

Kokkonen’s second symphonic venture continued in this vein. Indeed, the composer suggested that in writing his Symphony no 1, he had been left with some residual ideas that warranted spinning out. Symphony no 2 is the result, a complex and highly dissonant work described as ‘enigmatic and austere’. Kokkonen was now 40 – did he have to push music to its limits in order to break free?

Over the next six years, Kokkonen would be honoured with a series of prestigious appointments. In 1963, he was elected a member of the Finnish Academy and in 1965, he became president of the Society of Finnish Composers. As such, in the year that Sibelius would have turned 100, the baton was finally passed to the next generation. Kokkonen’s music may be lesser known, but the impact he had on improving musical life in his country should not go unrecognised.

The year 1967 was a turning point for Kokkonen; with the composition of his third symphony, he entered his third stylistic period – free tonality. In this new mode, Kokkonen would go on to write some of his best-known works, his Symphony no 4 (1971), an opera, The Last Temptations (1975); and his Requiem (1981), written in memory of his second wife, Maija. The man who wrote for the heart, now wrote from the heart; as the shadows slipped away, so he allowed melody to sing.

Great Jazz from Fine Music: Two Piano Trios

Favourite Albums from the Fine Music Jazz Crew

In recent articles in this series, we have profiled favourite jazz albums of several of our Fine Music jazz presenters. What makes the fine jazz on Fine Music so good is the variety of tastes and experiences our presenters bring to their weekly playlists. But what makes a favourite, that music that you want to take on a road trip, sit down to on a chilly night with a close friend, engage with when you are concentrating on a complex task, or simply chilling out?

This month, we have two quite different favourites. Both piano trios, but distinctive styles and emphases. Both magical and otherworldly, transporting you to different depths of emotion.

Barney McAll is an Australian pianist, born in 1966. His father was a lover of traditional jazz and his elder brother introduced him to contemporary musicians Bud Powell and Bill Evans. He played the Melbourne jazz scene, including as pianist for Vince Jones. He won the inaugural AMP Jazz Piano Award at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, and spent the prize money travelling to New York, where he remains. He has continuing links with Australia, winning APRA, ARIA, Age Music and Bell awards, as well as the Peggy Glanville-Hicks residency in Sydney, and an Australia Council Fellowship. Ever inventive, he has formed ensembles including ASIO (Australian Symbiotic Improvisers Orbit) and MODAS (Mother of Dreams and Secrets).

Vivid was released in 2018 and is a collaboration with tabla player and percussionist Badal Roy, and cellist Rufus Cappadocia. It also features African and Indian vocalists and world-class special guests Fred Wesley (off James Brown) and Jo Jo Kua (off Fela Kuti), as well as a cast of luminaries.

For Robert, Vivid follows a sequence of outstanding McAll releases, including Mooralbark, Hearing the blood and An Extra Celestial Christmas. It continues to use voice as a principal instrument. Of the 13 tracks on the album, Robert recommends: Chinese cello, 25 Min, Balatabla, and Allankar

Changing Places – Tord Gustavsen Trio Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway – 2003 – ECM

Tord Gustavsen is a Norwegian pianist, born in Oslo in 1970 and brought up in the rural area outside the capital. He grew up playing church music. Playing piano at four, he was composing and improvising before he could read music. After achieving a degree in psychology, he studied jazz piano at the Conservatorium in Trondheim and then musicology in Oslo, before becoming an adjunct professor at the University of Oslo. His main field of interest is ‘the psychology and phenomenology of improvisation’, drawing ‘… on the psychology of relationships developed by German psychoanalytic Helm Stierlin and Norwegian psychologist Anne-Lise Løvlie Schibbye’. His thesis was titled The Dialectical Eroticism of Improvisation.

Changing Places was his first album with ECM, and the first of a trilogy including Ground (2005) and Being There (2007). Gustavsen on piano was accompanied by Harald Johnsen on double bass and Jarle Vespested on drums. The albums contained ‘rapt, pristine, meditative music, which resonated

with the inner needs of a large, discriminating audience’. Changing Places demonstrates meticulously constructed melodies and rhythms, with hints of Bill Evans’ style. Tord Gustavsen is a gifted melody maker showing a series of deftly executed choruses and sublime themes.

For Leita, what takes her breath away is how sensitive, deep and soulful this music is. Gustavsen’s interest in psychology and music have produced an unusual product, and Changing Places is the intersection and union of both interests. It’s soft and dreamy, unavoidably sensual, personal, intense, elegantly dramatic and contemplative. He’s expressed something that can take your breath away. Just sit in a beautifully weathered, earthcoloured leather chair, warm and comfortable against the elements, with a round balloon of fragrant cognac cupped in your hand. Set one reading light to illuminate you, and give yourself time to listen to a few tracks.

Volunteer SpotlightMadilina Tresca

A love of music is usually what drives volunteers to become involved with 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. Madilina Tresca is no exception, although she says it was pure chance that she stumbled across 2MBS-FM. Curiosity led her to make the call to volunteer, which she has been doing since 2003.

As a child born in Sydney of Italian migrants, Madilina learned at a very young age the magic that exists in music. She says: “When my parents played their albums and sang songs from the Italian region of Abruzzo something magical always happened. They beamed! They were at their happiest when they sang those songs from the depth of their soul. Two favourites - Reginella Campagnola and Zi’ Nicola.”

Asked about the process of programming, Madilina explains that her choice of music is dependent on the type of program. For example, for regular offerings such as Diversions in Fine Music, Concert Hall, or Baroque and Before, the programmer must adhere to the guidelines set out by the Programming Committee. This includes taking into consideration the time of day or night the program will be presented. Some pieces of music just don’t work when aired at particular times. She says: “When I discover a piece of music that is ‘magical’ but not appropriate for a current program I happen to be working on, I place it aside for a future occasion.”

Madilina’s favourite projects are for thematic classical programs. She says: “I have free rein to use the pieces of music of my choice. The time and day of broadcasting is left up to others to decide. Um … let’s not mention the timing/length of a program – every programmer’s nightmare!”

As for memorable performances, Madilina recalls John Bell’s production of Puccini’s Tosca at the Sydney Opera House in 2013. She says: “Korean born Yonghoon Lee as Cavaradossi and Greek soprano Alexia Voulgaridou as Floria Tosca were exquisitely mesmerising. I had goosebump moments throughout the performance.”

Outside Fine Music Sydney, Madilina finds time to work out three times a week with a personal trainer and is looking forward to doing the 28km Sydney 7 Bridges Walk again this year. She also does the Spit to Manly Walk on Sundays as often as she can. Like so many others, she says: “Interstate travel seems to be a figment of my imagination these days during the pandemic lockdown.”

Bonuses for her involvement with the station are: “The people. The support. The camaraderie … and the new coffee machine!”

Misra Chappu Coco’s Lunch

I first came across Lisa Young — singer, composer and educator — listening to her self-released 1984 record, Fire and the Spark, and being transfixed by the beauty and power of her voice. Since then, she has released four albums of jazz interwoven with world music with her Quartet, and seven albums with Coco’s Lunch, who have been described as ‘Melbourne’s magical purveyors of the a cappella art’. On this album, Young is joined by Jacqueline Gawler, Nicola Eveleigh, Gabrielle MacGregor and Emma Gilmartin, together with musicians playing a variety of ethnic percussion instruments.

The title, Misra Chappu, refers to a South Indian rhythmic cycle of three and a half beats and reflects Young’s study of konnakol (South Indian vocal percussion), the subject of her PhD thesis. Rhythmic risk-taking, soaring melodies, and the harmonic interplay of voices of different timbres, all play their part in producing exciting, improvised music. Created during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown last year, the album succeeds in ‘bringing healing, light and beauty to the world’.

Plenitude

Considered to be one of the greatest trombonists in the world and renowned for his swing improvisation, Brazilian Raul De Souza is credited with creating the Bossa Nova of the ‘50s and Samba jazz of the ‘60s. From Sérgio Mendes to Sonny Rollins, from Flora Purim to Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius, he collaborated with the jazz greats.

In 2017, he started working with trombonist Christophe Schweizer, piano discovery Alex Correa, bassist Glauco Solter and drum prodigy Matheus Jardim. Styled as the Generations Band, they developed their own infectious blend of Funk, trimmed with traditional and contemporary Brazilian Jazz.

Their last album Plenitude has contemporary arrangements of de Souza’s early funk successes such as Sweet Lucy and Daisy Mae, collaborations with old friends (including a rework of Apesar de Você by compatriot Chico Buarque), plus brand-new compositions. Listen for the luscious brass harmonies on Funk das Meninas, De Souza gliding on Nana and slinking over Netinha Aura. The horns get soulful on Tombo in 7/4 and clearly lyrical on Plenitude.

De Souza died in July from cancer, days after the release of Plenitude. At 87, his playing had not lost any of its energy. Working with younger players clearly served only to reinvigorate his music.

Lost Ships

Lost Ships brings together for the firsttime principal performers vocalist Elina Duni and guitarist Rob Luft, with a song list which includes six original and four folk songs. The original songs reference 21st century issues such as the effects of climate change and displaced people. Duni was born in Albania and fled with her family to Switzerland when aged 10 to avoid civil unrest. There she continued classical music studies which eventually led to a career as a jazz/folk

singer. She has recorded seven albums to date. Luft at 26 is a multi-awardwinning London guitarist, acknowledged as a skilled arranger and influenced by late compatriots John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler. They are joined by Fred Thomas on piano, and Matthieu Michel on flugelhorn. Album highlights include the title track which speaks of refugees lost at sea, and the American gospel song The wayfaring stranger

Philipp Heinrich Erlebach was one of many German composers of the late 17th century whose work has fallen off the pages of history. Erlebach is reputed to have possessed a library of 2500 manuscripts of music, a collection of others and his own, that was destroyed some 20 years after his death in a fire at Rudolfstadt where he had served as Kapellmeister. His surviving works are from the collections of others, and it has required a good deal of detective work to uncover them. Amongst Erlebach’s exceptional works are his two sets of Harmonious Joy of Musical Friends: Moral

John Allan: Mirabile in Prague

Mirabile in Prague is a survey of the music of Australian composer John Allan. He has been composing since 1987: fittingly, the CD opens with a piece from 1988, and ends with an orchestration from 2013. The title is taken from the third track, a piece that was inspired by the birth of Allan’s daughter and which, like the majority, began its life as a work for solo piano. In its orchestrated form, Allan evokes a sense of intimacy through soft strings over which the deliberate pluckings of a harp and the sweet sound of a flute emerge.

and Political Songs with Ritornellos

These are examples both of secular German song and of the ethics of their day, and they are given a sympathetic and engaging interpretation from Le Banquet Céleste, voiced and led by counter-tenor Damien Guillon. Alongside Erlebach’s songs are two instrumental sonatas that allow us to perceive even better the craft and imagination of this almost forgotten composer. Delicate music that will soothe the soul.

Walkie Talkie

Commencing a jazz career at the Sydney Conservatorium with a scholarship is a hallmark of emergent talent. Hailing from Port Macquarie, Sam Killick bought a new electric guitar and gear for his jazz performance studies. Now a graduate, but caught in the grip of the pandemic’s dearth of performance opportunities, Killick has embraced a plethora of projects. He has formed and recorded with Mansion, all graduates from the Conservatorium, as well as recording with a fellow guitarist from the UNSW jazz campus. He has also just released a solo EP, Walkie Talkie

The album started with recording a two-hour improvised guitar set.

It is interesting to contrast this track with the two following, as they derive from the Mirabile theme. Mirabilia Antipodia has touches of Westlake’s Antarctica in the way it evokes this Southern Land. Allan’s orchestrations of Debussy and Brahms are similarly evocative in their colouring. The castanets in La Soirée dans Grenade add a lovely charm.

This CD is a tribute to Allan’s career, and his efforts in sharing his music with the world.

Add some overdubs from modular synth, flute, clarinet and some choice household objects. Inject a hint of surf guitar reminiscent of the Shadows and Ventures, and contemplate an empty beach, listening to the waves and birds. A sense of stillness that engenders improvisation.

Listen out for that empty beach with First Light, and the guttural bass in Hold Your Breath, and then the gentleness of Take Leave, complete with bird sounds. Elements remind me of Narciso Yepes’ guitar. Moody and relaxing. This is an engaging soundscape.

You are providing a much-appreciated service to listeners from a wide background, not just from the ‘English Church tradition’, as the writer says. There is no such thing as an ‘obscure Mass setting’. A mass is a mass: it is always good to hear good music. Please keep up the inclusive programming that we love.

Set in 14th century Scotland, the blacksmith, Henry, yearns for the glover’s daughter, Catherine, to be his Valentine. He gives her a rose brooch in advance of the day. A duke arrives at the forge, and he flirts with Catherine which almost causes a fight, until Mab (the Queen of the Gypsies, who has been hiding there) emerges to protect the

Duke. She picks up the rose brooch which Catherine has thrown away. Later, outside Catherine’s window, the Duke asks Mab to bring Catherine to a ball at his palace that night. Henry tries to serenade his sweetheart, but with no success. Ralph, the glover’s apprentice, arrives drunk and in despair. He sees a lady that he believes is Catherine getting into a litter and leaving, so he sends Henry after it; however, it’s not Catherine. At the palace, the Duke is expecting his new conquest, and when a masked lady appears, he finds out it is Mab (who promptly disappears, leaving the brooch behind).

Henry arrives, thinking Catherine has been unfaithful, so he hides. The glover arrives to invite the Duke to his daughter’s upcoming wedding. Thinking this confirms his suspicions, Henry accuses Catherine of betrayal, especially after noticing that the Duke has the rose brooch.

Ralph tries to persuade Henry that his suspicions are unfounded, and agrees to meet Henry in a duel. Later, Mab arrives with the news that the Duke has prevented the duel, but the glover alleges his daughter has lost her mind. To shock her back to sense, Mab sings a reply to Henry’s earlier serenade. Catherine regains her senses and is soon back in Henry’s arms preparing for a happy Valentine’s Day.

The young knight, Albert, finds himself in debt because of his jousting and courtly pleasures. His father, a very wealthy but equally frugal baron, refuses to support his son's lifestyle. Albert tries to obtain a loan from a moneylender who instead offers him poison to murder his father. Albert is appalled. Albert’s father gloats over his treasure but realises that Albert could fritter it away on sensual pleasures.

Albert appeals to the Duke for help in obtaining money from his father. The Duke asks the Baron to support his son, but the Baron accuses Albert of wanting to steal from him. Albert, in hiding, overhears this and reveals his presence. He accuses his father of lying. When the Baron and Albert are about to engage in a duel, the Duke banishes Albert from his court. Stressed by this confrontation, the Baron collapses, and, as he dies, his last request is not for his son, but for the keys to his chests of gold.

The son of the King of Clubs is unable to laugh. Attempts by the jester Truffaldino to cure him are frustrated by the prime minister, Leandro, who is conspiring with Clarissa, the king’s niece, to take the throne. They are protected by the witch Fata Morgana, while the king is under the protection of the magician Tchelio. The prince only laughs when Fata Morgana falls head-over-heels. She puts a curse on him: he will fall in love with three

oranges and pursue them to the ends of the earth. He sets off on the quest with Truffaldino. Following the advice of the magician, he steals the oranges from a monstrous cook, but the magician has also warned him not to cut the oranges unless he is near water and while he sleeps, Truffaldino, who is thirsty, cuts open two of them and the princesses inside die of thirst. Even when the prince cuts open the third orange, he is unable to provide a drink for the princess, Ninetta, who is only saved by the intervention of the audience. Smeraldina, Fata Morgana’s servant, puts the princess to sleep and substitutes herself, metamorphosing into a rat. Tchelio turns the rat into the princess and the conspirators are defeated.

At the bustling Saint-Lazare station, in 1860, constantly arriving trains are filled with wealthy foreigners, eager to experience the fabled gaiety of Parisian life. Gardefeu and Bobinet, rivals for the favours of the lovely Métella, studiously ignore each other but when she arrives from Trouville on the arm of another, they bury the hatchet and resolve to address a worthier social level. Tourists continue to pour in, and Gardefeu’s former servant Joseph, now working for the Grand Hotel, arrives to fetch an English lord and his wife. Gardefeu takes one look at the delectable Lady MacDonald and bribes Joseph to change places. He escorts the couple to his own townhouse, telling them it’s an annexe of the Grand Hotel, and lodges them in well-separated bedrooms. This suits his lordship, as his idea of a good time in Paris involves becoming acquainted with Métella, whose reputation has crossed the Channel. Gardefeu plans to beguile Lord MacDonald with an elaborate dinner and then somehow get him out of the way, leaving himself a clear field with her ladyship. A hapless bootmaker and glover, arriving to deliver their goods, find themselves posing as a major and a colonel’s widow, with a tableful of hurriedly assembled ‘friends’. A remarkably good time is had by all, and, after this, Bobinet hosts an intimate gathering at his absent aunt’s townhouse. Servants turn into fashionable guests. Bobinet becomes an admiral, with the chambermaid as his wife, her task being to seduce Lord MacDonald. However, Métella, anxious to win back Gardefeu, joins forces with her ladyship, who wants to extricate her husband from the perils of Parisian life. This is achieved, but not before Gardefeu and his lordship almost come to blows. All’s well that ends well; c’est la vie parisienne!

The crowd makes fun of the knight's rueful countenance and his veneration for the beautiful Dulcinée, whom he sees as the ideal woman. He sings a serenade to her and is challenged to a duel by Juan, another of her admirers. Dulcinée prevents the fight and Don Quichotte declares that henceforth he will serve her. As proof of his devotion, she asks him to recover a necklace stolen from her by bandits. Don Quichotte sets out without delay, accompanied by the unhappy Sanço. While the two are resting on their quest, the bandits appear and are about to hang Don Quichotte. He stops them by telling them his story. Tenbrin, leader of the bandits, is so touched that he releases Don Quichotte and gives him the necklace to return. The victorious knight returns to Dulcinée with the necklace and asks for her hand in marriage. She is delighted with the necklace but refuses his offer. Crushed by her rejection, Don Quichotte leaves. Sanço tries to console him but the old knight feels death approaching. As he thinks of Dulcinée, Don Quichotte dies. Ballet music from Le Cid (1885). Set in Roman Armenia during the reign of the Roman emperor Decius from 249 to 251 A.D., Poliuto, an Armenian nobleman secretly converts to Christianity, which under the new Roman laws is punishable by death. His wife Paolina, suspecting his interest in the new faith, follows him to the Christian’s secret meeting place. Nearco, the leader of the Armenian Christians reports that the Roman general, Severo will soon arrive to help with the persecution of the Christians. Paolina is torn as she only married Poliuto believing Severo to be dead. The High Priest, Callistene tells Severo that Paolina's marriage may have been forced on her and arranges a meeting. He also arranges for Polituo to overhear the meeting of the two former lovers, arousing his jealousy. The news of Nearco’s capture prevents him from taking action against his wife, whom he believes unfaithful. To save Nearco, Polituo reveals his conversion to Christianity. While he is in prison, he has a dream that Paolina was really faithful and when she visits him, he forgives her. She tries to persuade him to give up his faith and when he refuses, she begs to be allowed to convert to Christianity. They both join the other Christians as they are led off to the lions.

The merchant Sander has three daughters. He promises to bring back from a voyage any gift they desire. Two ask for expensive gifts, but Zémire seeks only a rose. Sander and his servant Ali are shipwrecked on the way home. They reach land and discover a castle, apparently deserted but with a banquet table set for them. While there, Sander plucks a rose for Zémire. The lord of the castle appears. He is Azor, half man, half beast, and declares that anyone stealing his flowers will be condemned to death. After Sander explains, Azor pardons him on condition that he be allowed to marry one of Sander’s daughters.

Sander and Ali return home. Ali tells Zémire about the pact and she persuades Ali to take her to Azor. Azor laments his ugliness, imposed by a curse, and contrasts it with his longing for love and affection. Zémire arrives in the castle and is entertained by Azor’s

servants. On seeing Azor she faints, but his courtesy and charm start to win her over. He allows Zémire to go home as long as she promises to return. Sander tries to persuade her not to return to Azor, but she insists on keeping her promise. Back at the castle, Azor laments Zémire’s absence but then hears her calling to him. She declares her love and the curse is lifted, Azor returning to his fully human state. All sing of the power of love as the opera concludes.
