The big news this month is the relocation of our transmitter from Governor Phillip Tower in the CBD to a new dedicated facility in Artarmon. Roger Doyle explains how funding this complex initiative could only come about through the enormous generosity of our listener-base, the appeal raising the needed money to not only relocate the equipment, but undertake the dismantling, removal and disposal of the antenna and the mast.

The AGM was held on 12 November with four new directors appointed to the Board, including Pamela Newling, FFM’s proofreader. The outgoing Chair, Michael Morton-Evans, stepped down to be replaced by Robert Gilchrist. In another ‘changing of the guard’, our Classical Content Coordinator, Paul Cooke, will also be handing over the reins to Iris Zeng from January - we welcome her to our Editorial team.

Roger Doyle relates the tricky and expensive process of relocating our main transmitter from Governor Phillip Tower to its new location in Artarmon. Team members actively engaged in the commercial negotiations and site transfer included: Mona Omar, Maureen and Keith Chaffey, David James, Rob Mitchell, John Shenstone, Max Benyon, John Xuereb and Rob Tregea.

After 25 years atop a high-rise in the CBD, our FM transmitter is now at Artarmon. While broadcasting from GPT served us well, relocation became necessary due to mounting costs, site access difficulties, upgrades and on-going maintenance due to an unforgiving environment. While relocating the transmitter and associated support equipment was in some ways the simplest part of the project, dismantling and removing the antenna and its 25-metre steel mast was a complex and expensive process, to be undertaken by specialists experienced in safe working at heights. Engaging a contractor followed careful technical and risk analysis and legal advice from our pro bono lawyers, Baker McKenzie.

Funding this complex initiative could only come about through the enormous generosity of our listener-base, the appeal raising the needed money to not only relocate the equipment, but undertake the dismantling, removal and disposal of the antenna and the mast. Finally, we are required to restore the site to its original state as required by Dexus, the owners of GPT. Our new transmission

home is the Transmitters Australia (TXA) facility –just off the Pacific Highway at Artarmon. TXA is a dedicated television and radio broadcast centre accommodating both commercial and community stations providing FM and Digital services.

Maintaining uninterrupted FM broadcasting during the process came about following detailed planning and strategic and incremental relocation of the equipment. Along with our high-power main transmitter, foresight from key figures Max Benyon and Kit Scally provided for a small stand-by transmitter, usually deployed when maintenance requirements need the primary system to be shut down. With the main transmitter operating as usual, the stand-by was removed, relocated to Artarmon, and following extensive testing by John Shenstone, initial site-swapping commenced. GPT remained operational in case we needed to revert.

While GPT stands as an excellent transmission point, its environment was quite hostile to sensitive electronic equipment; extreme heat, humidity and corrosive pollution had taken its toll on the main transmitter. On transfer to Artarmon, our team carried out disassembly, essential cleaning and restoration.

All was well. After 25 years, the facility closed down in readiness for our contractors Powerfone Pty Ltd to take down the mast, dismantle and remove for disposal.

The ABC at 90 – Memories of a lifetime of music

In October we celebrated the centenary of the founding of the BBC with an article written by Derek Parker, who created and introduced many programs for that broadcaster, and who has been a volunteer at 2MBS Fine Music Sydney for the last 20 years. This month we celebrate in music and words the 90th birthday of the ABC and, while I have never been an employee of theirs, I am the child of someone who played in the SSO from 1949 to the mid-1980s and have been much influenced by the ABC. My memories may inspire your own reminiscences.

The ABC came into being on 1 July 1932 with a concert program, introduced with live speeches from the Prime Minister and others, establishing it not only as a broadcaster intended to ‘serve all sections and to satisfy the diversified tastes of the public’, but also as a provider of ‘groups of musicians for the rendition of orchestral, choral and band music of high quality’ (initially a 50-piece orchestra cobbled together from various sources). The modern versions of the SSO and the other capital city orchestras didn’t come into being until after World War II.

On radio, I remember listening to In Quires and Places, featuring small choirs and ‘fine choral works’, and programs of chamber music, where I acquired a love of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms. But I also remember the non-classical music, on 2BL rather than 2FC: Arch McKirdy’s Relax with me, which was succeeded in 1972 by Ian Neil’s Music to midnight (in these programs I came across the ballads of Miles Davis and Ben Webster and the bossa nova of Brazilian organist Walter Wanderley); and Chris Winter’s Room to move, which often featured rock music with more than a hint of classical influence.

My strongest memories are of live performances. There were open-air concerts held in Centennial Park, which were an initiative of conductor Eugene Goossens and had been running since 1950. There were schools concerts at the Town Hall, and youth concerts both there and in the newly opened Opera House. There was a marvellous concert featuring John Ogdon, Messiah rehearsals and Sunday night concerts where I sat behind the orchestra, and the fundraising concert in 1975 where the SSO was conducted by Danny Kaye, swapping baton for flyswat for The flight of the bumblebee.

And then there were the Proms, a concert series initiated by John Hopkins, held during summer from 1965 onwards, and very popular: Maria Prerauer wrote of the ‘long queues at 3 a.m., the pavement camping, … the overwhelming excitement … as the youngsters gathered to buy their tickets’. I was introduced to Grainger miniatures and Mahler symphonies, but most memorable were two performances which stood at the outer edges of classical music. One, in 1970, was Peter Sculthorpe’s Love 200, written to mark the bicentenary of Captain Cook’s landing at Kamay (Botany Bay) and featuring amplified singer and rock band. The other, in 1971, was a performance – or ‘realisation’ – by David Ahern’s AZ Music of a composition by Cornelius Cardew. Apparently, the audience rioted. I don’t remember, I must have been transfixed by the music.

Many thanks to the ABC for providing so many people with opportunities to be engaged with and enthused by music over the past 90 years – and for feeding the desire for quality local broadcasting. It is a pleasure for 2MBS Fine Music Sydney to share the airwaves with them!

First PersonGiuseppe Zangari

Giuseppe Zangari is a teacher and performer on the classical guitar and has been associated with the Classical Guitar Society of Sydney for many years. He sees the importance of maintaining musical connections with members whilst providing a link to promoting and nurturing the future generations of guitarists. As principal of the specialist Sydney Guitar School, he leads a dedicated team of teachers with locations in Five Dock, Kirribilli and the Sydney CBD. Giuseppe has performed throughout Australia and internationally with many local and international artists and was Lecturer in Guitar at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He is also an A.M.E.B. examiner in Guitar.

Tell me about your childhood and earliest musical memories. Were your parents music lovers?

There was always music played at home; records and tapes of Italian folk music; songs and dances from Southern Italy, where my parents came from. Within that there was a lot of tarantelle, tangos, waltzes and serenades. I have fond memories of listening and singing along to the operatic greats such as Caruso, Lanza and Pavarotti. I wanted to become an opera singer from an early age – I just knew I loved music, and it was fostered through my early experiences at home. I remember my maternal grandmother and mother singing to us when we very little, all the Italian folk nursery songs and lullabies that were passed on from generation to generation. We would always have a sing-along and a dance at family parties with uncles, aunties and cousins. I also had relatives and family friends who sang and played musical instruments, and I knew that the above musical experiences ‘spoke to me’, so that I just wanted more of them! Singing at church and in the school choir was also influential.

guitar. I couldn’t wait to play what I had just bought –everything else stopped until I had played it through. It was such a highlight of the day!

Who inspired you when you began your musical journey? Did you have a mentor?

My brother Peter was learning the guitar well before I started. He would just play anything – I always loved that! I had various teachers and mentors along the way and am very grateful for those experiences and how I was encouraged to follow my passion by my parents, who would always be supportive of me doing whatever I loved. I recall one car trip home from a lesson as a child, where I thought I would stop playing guitar as I didn’t feel I was making progress. I told my mother I wanted to give up, to which she replied, “Giuseppe, you should stick to your guitar, as you never know, it may become handy one day”. Fast forward many years and I can safely say that, “Yes, mum, it did become very handy, just like your priceless suggestion!”

When did you realise that music would always be a part of your life?

From early experiences, and in particular feeling how music could transport you to another place where you could express yourself. From when I was a teenager, I knew that it would always be part of my life, and I would rush home from school after visiting the music store to buy some sheet music for

As a child, I was fortunate to have a very patient guitar teacher, Paolo Stuppa. He would always say ‘practice makes perfect’ and that it was ‘only a matter of time’ after each lesson – something that has stayed with me. I was not the quickest of learners and I found the rudiments of music challenging in the early years. But I summarise his words all the time for my students with a central theme, that for achieving excellence, we need time, practice, and patience.

What is it about the guitar that excites you?

I love the soothing sounds of the guitar. I love the simplicity and complexity of what can be achieved with the instrument. Whether it is plucked, picked, or strummed, the guitar is an instrument for everyone! The variety of timbral colours that can be achieved is very attractive to me. I love seeing other people’s excitement of hearing the guitar, whether they are just listening or playing it for the first time!

You have collaborated with some well-respected soloists and ensembles. What is it about collaborating that you enjoy?

I love how you can connect with fellow musicians through music. The energy, passion and excitement that is felt when collaborating is fun and truly special! The sharing of musical ideas and working as part of a team is a highlight of collaboration. I am fortunate to call a lot of my musical collaborators my friends. I have learnt a lot through working with others and I think it’s important to stay adaptable and to constantly strive for improvement in performance!

You’ve travelled extensively as a musician. Name some of the highlights of these tours and where you would most like to return one day. I‘ve been fortunate to be able to travel doing what I love, both locally and internationally. Highlights for me have been performing to audiences who were hearing live guitar for the very first time, and then telling me after the concert, “I loved that piece you played”, or stories about learning guitar when they were younger, or how they have a favourite piece for guitar etc, etc. These concert experiences add more meaning and relevance for us performers, revealing the power of music and how we are all connected. Music performances relive old memories and create new ones.

Performing in regional and rural concerts with flautist Jane Rutter after the first lockdown of 2020 is something that I will never forget. Specifically, playing two afternoon concerts at the Lismore Regional Art Gallery, that would only allow 20 audience members per concert due to social distancing measures was a highlight for me. Playing to audiences who were hearing live music for the first time since the pandemic began made me realise the true importance of music in our society; it also made it clear how I missed performing during that astonishing time in history! That community also suffered a lot due to the floods over the past year and a half; I would love to return there again!

You have an obvious love of sharing your musical passions. What is it about teaching that you get the most satisfaction from?

I am so lucky to be doing what I love, playing the guitar, and being able to share that love with others through teaching. I love seeing the development of students and nurturing their gift of playing an instrument, whether it is seeing the improvement from lesson to lesson, piece by piece or note by note. A big part of how they improve is their passion and drive for the instrument, their hard work and practice at home; my suggestions as a teacher form one small percentage of their results, but it is up to them to do the work! I love seeing them achieve, whether performing in competitions, eisteddfodau, guitar exams or learning to hold or play their first note on their instrument for the very first time. It is very satisfying when students want to learn music they’ve heard for the first time, and we go over a plan of action to achieve their goals!

I also love seeing students become more independent in their musical thoughts and ideas over time, because at the end of the day there are only so many versions of the one piece of music, but what makes it special is the player’s interpretation that brings their personality to the music and that is very satisfying indeed!

Twentieth Century Suites

Catherine Peake looks at the music suite through the Twentieth Century

When the suite took its place in 20th century music, the dance expectations of the listener had more or less disappeared. Though the structure of a dance suite continued to be used in the connected but distinct movements, the original baroque idea that the listener enjoying the music of a suite could also enjoy dancing to it had gone. Instead of being focused on dance, the 20th century suite reflected much of the experimentation being introduced into other music forms, and other art forms, of the time.

Igor Stravinsky produced his own form of classicism in the one-act ballet Pulcinella that premiered in 1920. Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes, Stravinsky said of his new ballet, “Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. It was a backward look, of course – but it was a look in the mirror, too.” Centring on a character from the commedia dell’arte, with music based on pieces believed to have been by composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Stravinsky had moved on from the scandal produced by his The Rite of Spring. Using music from the ballet, his Pulcinella Suite (without the voices used in the ballet music) premiered in 1922, with both the ballet and its orchestral suite popular ever since.

In contrast to Stravinsky’s backward glance, Schoenberg set his sights firmly forward, taking a direction which not all of his audience would willingly follow. In his Suite for piano, op 25, Schoenberg used his new twelve-tone technique during an entire piece for the first time. Though consisting of six movements with the familiar dance titles of a suite, the music was anything but familiar to his listeners. As a form of serialism, the technique of giving all notes equal importance and thereby avoiding use of a key might not have led to a comfortable concert, but its use in the Piano Suite introduced a new wave of music that would gain in compositional interest throughout the 20th century.

With ballet retaining its connection to the music suite, even if the listener’s own dance ambitions had receded into the distance, Copland’s Appalachian Spring was written at the request of Martha Graham who would take the lead role in its 1944 premiere. It tells the story of American pioneers and their celebration

of spring, and as with the music of many successful ballets of the 19th and 20th centuries rearranged by their composers, Copland arranged Appalachian Spring in 1945 to create an orchestral suite that could be performed as a separate concert piece.

In using the suite as a structure for The Planets, Holst’s engagement with mysticism had room to expand. Each of the seven movements represented one of the seven known planets (excluding earth), focussing on what Holst thought to be the astrological significance of each planet and producing a series of what he called ‘mood pictures’ that acted as ‘foils to one another’. First performed in 1918 towards the end of World War I, The Planets became one of the most popular pieces of the 20th century. And the piece must have retained some remnants of baroque intent, because his daughter Imogen Holst wrote of the premiere, “During Jupiter the charwomen working in the corridors put down their scrubbingbrushes and began to dance.”

French Master par excellence

Former French Prime Minister Charles de Freycinet was walking amongst the urbane people of Paris when he recognised César Franck approaching at a fast trot, his uniform an oversized frock coat, grey trousers hoisted too high, top hat haphazardly brushed against the nap. The Prime Minister slowed to talk, but Franck, without breaking stride, called as he passed, “Will you come with me to Sainte-Clotilde? But don’t speak to me. I heard last night heavenly things, and I don’t want to forget them!”

Had the Prime Minister followed, he would have witnessed the organiste titulaire take his place at the Cavaille-Coll console, and in dreamy reverie tease the heavenly things into divine themes, pausing occasionally to draw from his dress coat pocket a red notebook, in which he would scratch notes for later.

And when later came, on any given Sunday or feast day, Franck would browse the notebook, perform his ritualistic meditation of tapping his forehead with the third finger, and from that moment on nothing would exist for him but the music.

Alas, this meant a tendency to lose track and not stop when required. In desperation the pastor installed a bell in the pumper room. “When rung, this means, M. Franck, by order of the pastor, STOP!” When this proved ineffective, a louder electric bell was installed which M. Franck couldn’t help but hear, and yet on he played, unruffled, exclaiming “But I never have time to return to the tonic!”

Franck’s student, Vincent d’Indy, who witnessed many of these musical extravaganzas, explained: “Franck never played the organ to be heard, but to acquit himself as best he could as a duty toward God and his own conscience. And his best was of a sane, elevated, sublime art.”

We will never personally witness this improvisational genius but there is still plenty of the man’s talent for us to savour. When Franck’s death was announced in November 1890, obituaries around the world noted him as a prolific composer of almost all genres, specifically referencing Ruth, Les beatitudes, Le chasseur maudit, Variations symphoniques and Symphony in D minor. They also acknowledged his contribution as a teacher and his humility as a person.

Franck was born in the country we now know as Belgium, at a time when it was politically contested. During his lifetime, there was a tendency for the French to dismiss him as too German, while the Germans found him too French.

It required World War I for Franck’s reputation to really anchor, his ambiguous national identity finally working to his advantage, with the sweet strains of his music falling like healing rains. One violinist, who’d experienced a horrendous time in the trenches, said, after giving an exquisite performance of Franck’s music: “One is not studying music down there and yet one is learning how to express thoughts as Franck has here, as never before one could have expressed them.”

The bicentennial of Franck’s birth provides opportunity to reflect on the events of the last century and our modern times. Globally, we have a greater interdependence than ever through the reduction of various national barriers, including trade, communication, and travel, and the need to work together on various global challenges. Has this brought us any closer to understanding the spirit of human unity that Franck seems to have been before his time in celebrating?

In a career spanning over 30 years, internationally recognised pianist and composer Chris Cody has headlined numerous festivals including Paris Quartiers d’Eté, London, Rome, Brussels Jazz Marathon, Stockholm, Munich, Marciac, Geneva, Ascona, Derry, Dar Es Salaam and Algiers. He has performed at a vast array of concert venues throughout the USA, Europe, Africa and Australasia, from the Village Gate NYC to the Munich Staatsoper. He has worked with many outstanding international musicians and has been regularly featured on radio and television. Cody’s compositions have been commissioned for the inauguration of the Australian Music Centre Paris, IRCAM France, Sydney Theatre Company, American Academy of Dance, Pillow Book Dance Company Pittsburg, and other French and American theatre companies. He has composed the music for eight prize-winning films, and has received a US Department of State Federal award, an APRA nomination for Naxos CD Oasis, a Django D’Or nomination France, and the Jazz Action Society Award for Best Composition.

What were your earliest childhood musical experiences that led you to playing the piano?

I was open to music and sound in general from an earliest age. My mother sang and played guitar and piano, and my father listened to records a lot. We sang at home and in school and church choirs. I love music, a language and an emotion that speaks to me with magic and mystery. I would listen to my mother playing piano in the evenings and pester my parents to organise lessons for me.

What have some of the highlights of your journey in music been like so far?

The first was proving to myself I could make a living from music in a foreign country far from home. I was accepted into the international music scene and offered support by the jazz community, firstly in New York then in Paris. My first album, first international tour, first French radio interview, first article were all landmarks that encouraged me to keep going. Playing with Roy Hargrove at the Village Gate, Herb Geller at the Elysée Montmartre, Sonny Murray at the Duc des Lombards, or Miles Davis alumni Rick Margitza in

but from its African American origins to its global expression today, it still means freedom, expression, rebellion, listening to others, sharing, honesty and truth. It’s an attitude and a way of life.

What is your latest musical project?

I’ve just recorded an album of my new work for octet, The Outsider. It’s inspired by the works of Camus, and the Covid experience, and initial gloom we all felt faced with sickness, death, and lockdown. It features three horns, an oud maestro and a hot rhythm section with bassist Lloyd Swanton, percussionist Adem Yilmaz and drummer James Waples.

There was also an outdoor concert with organist Rhoda Scott at a big festival in the south of France that I remember. The arrangements were so difficult that the whole orchestra and conductor stopped at one point, lost in their scores. She looked across the stage at me in consternation, and I launched into a free solo that then became a duo with her to bring the whole thing back together. The crowd loved it, not realising how close we were to a train wreck!

You have worked extensively in the European music scene. What beneficial aspects from there could be successfully applied to our home scene? In Europe, every country values its language, art, culture, and history that creates a sense of identity and belonging. I think many Australian are less sure of who they are, and how they want to be. It’s an ongoing conversation and evolution. How important do we want art, music and culture to be here? As in Europe, wide media coverage would be helpful to raise awareness and stimulate appetite. It grows the audience, leading to more venues, festivals, reviews, and airplay.

The French unemployment insurance scheme for Intermittents du spectacle successfully provides support for artists on the days they don’t receive paid work. It allows musicians to dedicate themselves to their music leading to more creative output. We need more pressure and lobbying on politicians and philanthropists to increase music funding to European levels. Volunteer Spotlight Mary Moran

Mary was raised on her family’s sheep farm, near Queenstown, in New Zealand’s South Island, where chores and talents were randomly doled out among the five kids. Her grandmother was a piano teacher and her mother played the organ at church and so it was decided she would learn the piano.

She says: “Mainly I remember the Central Otago winters, practising before school in a freezing cold lounge room, with just a one bar heater at my feet for warmth. I would race through my scales and arpeggios while my mother yelled ‘slow down!’ from the kitchen. I also taught myself guitar and loved that I could learn an Olivia Newton-John threechord ballad in less than an hour. This seemed so much more rewarding than the piano.”

Mary was unsuccessful at negotiating an early retirement from piano, and at boarding school her lessons continued. “Sometimes I was required to perform at the Dunedin Town Hall. The worst part was travelling to the concerts with the nuns, who liked to get in a few quick prayers, rather than paying attention to the traffic.” After one particularly close call, Mary’s parents agreed she could pause her music while she sat her main school exams. Unfortunately, as predicted by her mother, Mary never returned to the piano in any serious capacity.

Much of Mary’s career was spent designing and implementing software solutions for global mining companies with remote, complex 24/7 operations. This career took her to some very obscure parts of the world. She comments: “Music is everywhere, even in the most remote corners. It transcends language, so I could be working in a small town in Brazil, with my very limited Portuguese, and go into a most unlikely-looking restaurant to find 20 or more guitarists, often many generations from the same family, playing the most wonderful music. The entire restaurant would all be on the same page and enjoying the experience even though we couldn’t communicate with words.”

Eventually, she tired of the long-haul travel and unsettled lifestyle. Since leaving the mining industry she has held a variety of consulting, executive and board roles across a range of industries, including most recently the zero emissions space.

When asked to select her most memorable concert, Mary is slow to pick one. “I was on the Trans-Siberian railway one winter and we stopped in what seemed a very remote outpost in Siberia. We were taken by troikas through snow-dolloped, postcard country to a Russian orthodox church. These monks shuffled out onto the altar and all holding candles, they sang the most exquisite traditional chants. It was like a dream.”

In more recent years Mary has returned to her classical roots, studying music appreciation. She adds: “I knocked on the door of 2MBS, looking to contribute in some way. I’m now presenting and writing, and I hope to do more programming in the future. The training has been very professional. People have been very generous in sharing their time and knowledge.”

Estonian Premieres

Estonian Festival Orchestra; Paavo Järvi - conductor Alpha ALPHA863

One of Europe’s most vibrant musical cultures is that of Estonia, one of the Baltic states that gained independence after the breakup of the USSR. Known for composers such as Arvo Pärt and Erkki-Sven Tüür, its thriving musical culture has also given us famous conductors and ensembles. Among the conductors is Paavo Järvi, who founded the Estonian Festival Orchestra in 2011. This new recording from Alpha Classics brings us a range of new works by lesser-known Estonian composers premiered by the EFO. The opening work, To the moonlight from Tõnu Kõrvits is

a wonderful evocation of night that exploits filmic textures and quotation. Helena Tulve, who works in the spectral compositional style, brings us a piece for a trio of string soloists pitted against the strings of the orchestra. Lepo Sumera’s Olympic Music I, on the other hand, engages with the folk traditions of the Baltic states, creating music that is more immediate in its impact upon the listener. An enjoyable and varied recording that paints a picture of a vibrant national musical culture.

Elena Kats-Chernin Vov Dylan, violin; Clemens Leske, piano Ambition

Kismet is subtitled Vignettes for violin and piano: 10 brief compositions, a couple making encore performances in different versions, by probably the best-known and most prolific Australian composer of her generation, Elena Kats-Chernin. They are mostly for violin and piano, but also include on occasions a second violin or cello or double bass. Most of the works were composed this century, although Charleston noir was written in 1996: written for solo piano, it is the longest and most distinctive piece, allying a slightly dissonant melody with the discernible rhythm of the Charleston dance. Also likely to be recognised is Eliza’s aria from the Wild swans ballet, here

arranged for the combination of violin and cello (played by Susan Blake): the cello sings and the violin dances, with both playing pretty pizzicato passages. Butterflying was originally composed for orchestra: here two violins (the second played by Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich) weave in and out, not fluttering but sustaining a dreamy flight path. Moon cloud waltz and Distant mountains, excerpts from KatsChernin’s recent Isolation suite, are pleasingly light, lyrical and lilting. Much of Kats-Chernin’s music is written in minor keys, but the overriding impression is one of delight and even joy.

If it were possible to inhale the music of this contemporary jazz album certainly one would be transported into a state of sonic euphoria. As the lengthy opening track, Pearl River develops under the deeply personal piano sound of Harry Sutherland setting the tone for the project; gradually each of the players contributes sounds akin to the excitement of children meeting in a playground, instantly creating their games. Then the magic begins. Throughout the remainder of the recording, everything falls into place. On stand-out tracks, Dark Emu, Unconventional, and Caro Kann, Lachlan Hamilton’s saxophone expertly darts, weaves, and cruises around the bassist Jacques Emery’s rhythmic textures and InmanHislop’s noted hues from his kit, while Sutherland builds emotion,

drama, and rich melodic colours providing all with a supportive base of jazz elasticity. Deja Vu reveals Jacques Emery’s technically enlightened solo on an expressive ride through form, followed by Sutherland’s sumptuous progression through the chordal structures on piano. Throughout the album, the music is always fascinating, sometimes dainty, and sometimes exquisite. Both Sutherland and Hamilton provide many instrumental and musical highlights signaling their acumen as composers and co-leaders of a highly distinguished ensemble. They all have chops, and these modern jazz practitioners find a perfect harmonious balance between composition and personal expressive freedom. Go ahead, inhale, and be transported.

This excitingly cool trio has delivered a recording that embraces and experiments with a plethora of instrument sounds, samples, textures, and grooves in a pleasingly unhurried way. The album simply couldn’t have been made by a trio that hadn’t put the hours in, done the hard yards, and dedicated themselves collectively to their cause. Listening to the utter conviction on this recording you get a distinct feeling that these guys would be making this amazing music even if nobody was listening. Each of the six movements segues into the next further enhancing the swirling and dreamy soundscapes, from which burst sections of varied styles and grooves, are all delivered with unquestionable brilliance and musicality. Some movements are long, giving you time to become fully immersed and some are shorter, but essentially it is one long track of a performance

recorded live and divided into appropriate numerical sections to accommodate the streaming algorithm that rejects a release of one track. Lee McIver’s trumpet is atmospheric and full of emotion and soul, and Ed Rodrigues’s drumming is punchy yet relaxed reaching stratospheric heights of dazzling improvisation which seals his reputation as one of the finest. Ed Goyer’s vibe playing and percussion wash and burst forth intriguingly over the soundscape with an unquestionable skill. Who else but the Polymorphic Orkestra has this dedication to the art of sound? With an enormous amount of individuality on display emanating from the Avant Guarde and with the added asset of guest artist Robert Vincs on saxello, each provides the glue that binds it all together, forming a unique voice delivered with brilliance and musicality.

While Richard is away, her father marries her, against her will, to her cousin, a wealthy ‘drunken libertine’. When Richard returns and learns of the marriage, he marries another woman on an impulse. Years

later, they meet when both are single again. Ottilie is about to be evicted from her home but Richard buys the property, saving her from bankruptcy and eviction, but still, they do not marry. Many years later, their grandchildren meet and marry and find the happiness that eluded their grandparents.

The Kadi, a Muslim judge, desires the beautiful Zelmire (whom he has never seen) in preference to his wife Fatima. As Zelmire has sent a message that she will not marry him, he has ordered her to be married to a poor man so that she would live in poverty. The groom, Nuradin, is not indignant because he has deceived the Kadi about his finances in order to be able to marry Zelmire. She seeks revenge on the Kadi by arranging for him to take Omega, a less-attractive woman, as his new wife. Fatima is enraged that the Kadi has divorced her.

Zelmire arranges for the Kadi to visit and, pretending to be Omega, she agrees to marry him. The wedding is about to take place, but the Kadi is enraged when he sees the real Omega rather than the pretended one. Then Zelmire and Nuradin reveal the deception.

The impresario, Don Grisobolo is planning his next production with the assistance of his librettist Don Perizonio and the composer Gelindo. Their work is made more complicated by the fact that the three prima donnas of the company, Fiordispina, Merlina and Doralba, all have their own ideas of what their characters should do and go to great lengths to tell the composer, the poet and the impresario what should happen. As well as artistic tensions, the company is beset by romance with Doralba being wooed by Strabinio, Merlina courted by the composer, Gelindo, and poor Fiordispina finds herself in a tug-of-war between the attentions of the impresario and the librettist. The fate of the new production is sealed, however, by the impresario, Don Grisobolo being declared bankrupt.

It is Christmas Eve in the Ukrainian village of Dikanka and amongst the singing and dancing of the villagers, Vakula the blacksmith is trying to woo the beautiful Oksana, who teases him that she will only marry him if he brings her the Tsarina’s slippers. When Oksana’s father, Chub, interrupts their tryst, Vakula mistakes him for a rival and strikes him, a blow that nearly ends Oksana’s interest in Vakula altogether. Meanwhile, Vakula’s mother, the witch Solokha, is meeting with a succession of potential lovers, including the Mayor of Dikanka, Oksana’s father, Chub, the Deacon, Nikiforovich, and the Devil himself. Each one hides in a sack as the next suitor appears but, when Vakula comes home, he takes the sacks to the smithy.

Vakula goes to visit the sorcerer, Patsyuk, who advises him that, in order to get the Tsarina’s slippers, he will need the help of the Devil. When Vakula puts down his last sack, the Devil emerges and tries to bargain for Vakula’s soul. The plucky blacksmith grabs the Devil’s neck and forces him to fly him to St. Petersburg despite the attempts of the sorcerer Patsyuk, flying on a mortar, and Vakula’s mother Solokha, flying on a broomstick, who try to block the way. Arriving in the palace in St. Petersburg, the Devil hides in the chimney while Vakula finds an opportunity to make his strange request. The Tsarina thinks this is just so amusing and graciously gives him a pair of her shoes. While Cossacks dance, the Devil and Vakula make their return to Dikanka. Oksana receives her slippers and Vakula asks her father for her hand in marriage, a privilege he is now

granted. Vakula then announces that he will only tell his story of a night with the Devil to the beekeeper, Panko the Gingerhead (i.e. Gogol) and ask him to write a tale of Christmas Eve.

The tyrant Silla has banished Cecilio, lover of Giunia, who believes that Silla has ordered Cecilio’s death. She rejects Silla's advances despite the pleas of his sister Celia. Cecilio is determined to claim his bride and secretly returns to Rome. He plans to work with his friend Cinna to organize a conspiracy against Silla. However, the conspirators are exposed and Cecilio is condemned to death, whereupon Giunia appeals to the Senate. She accuses Silla of arrogance and abuse of power. Surprisingly, Silla pardons Cecilio and consents to his marriage to Giunia. He also pardons Cinna and gives him Celia. He abdicates and retires to private life, convinced that a virtuous heart is more valuable than false splendour.

Julian loves Susana but he is jealous and makes her unhappy. When Susana objects to his jealousy, his godmother, Rita, advises him to leave Susana and forget her. Susana lives with her sister, Casta, and their aunt, the quarrelsome Antonia. The local chemist, the elderly Don Hilarion, flirts with the two sisters. On the night of the verbena (or festival) of the Virgin of Paloma, Don Sebastian, a friend of the elderly Don Hilarion, reproaches him for his amorous escapades before they go to the festivities. At home, Susana and Casta

hear flamenco singing and start dancing to a mazurka. Don Hilarion arrives at the house followed by Julian and Rita, who tries to make sure that the young man does nothing foolish. Don Hilarion comes out of the house escorting the sisters. Julian tries to attack Don Hilarion but Aunt Antonia screams causing the guards, the night watchman and the landlord to arrive. Later, Don Sebastian and his wife are sitting outside their shop watching the young people dance. Don Hilarion, frightened by his encounter with Julian, takes refuge in the shop. Julian appears, then Casta, Susana and Aunt Antonia arrive with their dogs. Blaming Antonia for encouraging Susana to flirt with Don Hilarion, Julian gets into a bitter argument with Antonia. The subsequent uproar, in which the dogs tear Julian’s trousers, brings the police inspector who decides to arrest Antonia for being disrespectful to him. Don Sebastian intercedes on behalf of Julian, who confesses his love for Susana, who also declares her love for him. Julian goes into the shop to change his trousers but finds Don Hilarion, who comes running out pursued by Julian. Don Sebastian, Casta, Susana and Rita catch hold of the furious Julian, who eventually calms down, and the verbena finishes in peace.

Santi lives in the homestead (El caserio), Sasibill, with his orphaned niece and nephew, the dutiful Ana Mari and her cousin, the irresponsible José Miguel. Santi's secret is that he loved Ana Mari’s mother but kept his feelings to himself when she married his brother. Santi regards Ana Mari as his daughter and wishes Sasibill could be hers in

future, even though it should be José Miguel's by right as he is older. He is convinced that his nephew is only staying on at Sasibill until he gets his inheritance. Don Leoncio, the priest, suggests that the two cousins should marry or that Santi should announce plans to marry, without yet having chosen a bride, to see whether José Miguel will be offended and leave the homestead forever. Ana Mari can then inherit. Santi likes the idea and announces his plans to marry. As expected, José Miguel is angry and goes away. Unaware that José Miguel loves her, Ana Mari tells her uncle that she will marry him and give him a son to inherit Sasibill. Realising that he loves Ana Mari, José Miguel returns after a month and finds that she is to marry Santi. He tells her of his love but she has given her word to her uncle. José Miguel leaves but returns again, telling Santi that, if he knew that Ana Mari loved Santi, he would accept the situation. Santi accuses José Miguel of loving Ana Mari because she will inherit Sasibill The young man says he truly loves her and doesn’t care about the inheritance. They call on Ana Mari to come to resolve the dispute. Everyone's true feelings become clear and Santi gives them his blessing, hoping they will stay at the homestead.
