Over the last two months, we adapted rapidly to an online and accessible workplace; however, we are now beginning to prepare our transition plan. Although this is a lot of work, I am happy to confirm that this month we return to broadcasting live programming content around the clock. Last month we began our annual EOFY campaign and subscriber drive with a big bang! As I write this, it is week two of our 6-week long campaign and we have already raised 50% of our $150,000 target. Thank you to all of you who have donated so far, your support is much appreciated, especially in these extremely difficult times. We wouldn’t be here without you. We still need to raise $75,000 to reach our target, and we need your help to get there. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to become a supporter. As a supporter of Fine Music Sydney, you can take pleasure and satisfaction in knowing that you are helping to keep us on air. To become a subscriber, just go to finemusicsydney.com. If you are keen to track our progress, the banner on the homepage has a running tally of donations that updates overnight.

Inspiring Sibelius We look at the Kalevala Written by Dan Bickel Painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela

During the 1890s, the young Jean Sibelius was associated with the nationalistic-cultural group Nuori Suomi, or Young Finland, which promoted Finnish distinctiveness free from the cultural dominance of Sweden and Russia. The Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela was a founding member of Nuori Suomi and enjoyed a creative friendship with Sibelius. Although both men were born into the Swedish-speaking ruling class, they both spoke Finnish and made a point of adopting the Finnish language, culture, and landscape as the basis for their work. The national epic of Finland, the Kalevala, thus proved to be the ideal focus for their nationalistic and artistic feelings. The Kalevala is based on oral folklore compiled by Elias Lönnrot during long trips as a district health officer in Karelia and elsewhere in eastern Finland. It was first published in 1835 and was instrumental in the development of the Finnish national identity, which ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. The Kalevala comprises 50 runot, or cantos, telling the story of the Finnish people from the beginning of the world to the end of pagan times. The verses were often sung accompanied by a kantele, a zither-like instrument, and relate the adventures of several main characters, involving conflict, kidnapping, seduction and magical spells. The protagonists of these stories often have to accomplish feats that are unreasonable or impossible, leading to tragedy or humiliation.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela - Lemminkäinen's Mother (The Artchives / Alamy Stock Photo0

Sibelius based many of his works on Kalevala themes. Kullervo, one of his early works, is a large choral symphony in five movements. It is based on the troubled character Kullervo. He is vengeful and easily flies into a rage. After unwittingly seducing his long-lost sister, he is overcome with remorse and commits suicide. The Lemminkäinen Suite was composed in the early 1890s as part of a proposed Kalevala-based opera entitled The Building of the Boat. Though the opera was never finished, the music was turned into an orchestral suite of four symphonic poems that recount the adventures of Lemminkäinen. In the first, Lemminkäinen and the Maidens of Saari, Lemminkäinen sails to an island where he seduces many women. Lemminkäinen in Tuonela has our hero in Tuonela, the land of the dead, to shoot the Swan of Tuonela in order to be able to claim the daughter of Louhi, mistress of the Northland, in marriage. However, Lemminkäinen

05

is killed and his body is dismembered and tossed into the river. When Lemminkäinen's mother learns of his death, she travels to Tuonela where she recovers his body parts and reassembles him, restoring him to life. The most popular of the four symphonic poems is The swan of Tuonela, which paints an image of the mystical swan swimming serenely on the waters of Tuonela. Sibelius’ interest in the Kalevala continued into the 20th century. In 1906, he composed the tone poem Pohjola’s Daughter in which the old, white-bearded Väinämöinen tries to entice a beautiful girl from Pohjola to join him, but she sets him a number of difficult tasks, such as tying an egg into invisible knots and building a boat from fragments. In Conversation with Cameron Lam Catching up with composer and 2018 Fine Music Kruger Scholar Cameron Lam Written by Mona Omar Photos by Hayden Shepherd

What have you been up to since we caught up with you in 2018? It’s amazing how long ago 2018 feels! The biggest things were completing The Art of Disappearing, a trombone concerto for Amy McCarthy, a symphony orchestra piece for my hometown orchestra (the Orange Symphony) and moving down to Melbourne.

Tell us about your album The Art of Disappearing. How did it feel to launch the physical album at City Recital Hall for Extended Play?

I’ve been

looking at this as an

opportunity to grow,

both consolidating my

strengths, learning new

things, and re-inventing my practice

The complete cycle is based on poems contained in Queensland writer Sarah Holland-Batt’s book, Aria. The title of the work is taken from the first poem of Sarah’s I read, The Art of Disappearing. It held my attention from the very first line: “the moon that broke on the fencepost will not hold.” There is something beautiful about the impermanence. So beautiful in fact that I set this poem twice as both the first and last song of the album. Presenting the song cycle at Extended Play was very special. I was very proud to be on the same bill as art music legends from around Australia and abroad. Having a recording, and a physical object, of Jenny Duck-Chong and Geist String Quartet’s performance of the cycle makes me excited as well. Extended Play was the first time I’ve ever been asked to sign anything – I was very flattered and humbled by those who grabbed a copy and wanted to discuss it with me.

The Art of Disappearing is a large song cycle, clocking in at just over one hour (just shy of Schubert's 70-minute, Winterreise), for mezzo soprano and string quartet.

You were recently awarded the Professional Services award in The Music Network's '30 Under 30' list. What does this mean to you?

You moved from Sydney to Melbourne late last year to commence a masters degree with composer Katy Abbott, at the Melbourne Conservatorium. What has the experience been like?

As someone who wears a lot of hats, it means an incredible amount to be recognised for work that is often considered background. In addition to being a freelance composer and the artistic director of production company/record label Kammerklang, I’m the Art Music Specialist at APRA AMCOS. I’ve been in the role for over four years and I’m proud of what we do. I’m always glad when someone has a eureka moment in figuring out how some process works, or the joy of an unexpected royalty payment.

Moving is always hard but uprooting after a fruitful 13-year stint in Sydney’s Inner West (after my hometown of Orange) was especially difficult. I’m glad I did though. It’s been interesting getting back into academia after a very long break but I’m enjoying meeting my fellow cohort, hearing some amazing music, and heated debates. I’ve been looking at this as an opportunity to grow, both consolidating my strengths, learning new things, and reinventing my practice. I couldn’t ask for a better guide through what is an occasionally harrowing process (change is hard, who knew?) than my supervisor Katy Abbott. I’m a big fan of her music and I have a lot to learn in terms of the mastery of texture, colour, and conceptual structures. I’m excited to see what I can learn and achieve throughout the next few years.

What projects are you currently working on? After finally getting my last box unpacked, I’m at last getting to sink my teeth into a number of new composition projects including: a new work for mezzo soprano and cello (again based on the poetry of Sarah Holland-Batt), a series of songs for soprano and piano, using a New York Times article from 2019 as text, a new orchestral work, based on the 86 tram here in Melbourne, and a series of new works for solo instruments and electronics. I’m also still taking care of Kammerklang along with our new artistic associate, Alicia Crossley, curating my fortnightly Australian Art Music playlist on Spotify, and looking into starting a podcast with a composer friend in Europe..

What are you most looking forward to doing once the restrictions are lifted? Eating dinner and sharing a glass of wine with a friend. The video calls and chances to connect with people (especially back in Sydney or overseas) have been wonderful, but I really miss the immediacy of a hug, listening to music together or chatting in person over a good meal. Wagner - Sesquicentenary of Premiere Written by Paul Cooke Painting by Hermann Hendrich

Richard Wagner would probably rather we didn’t celebrate the sesquicentenary of the premiere of Die Walküre this month. In response to the Europe-wide uprisings of 1848, Wagner wrote a prose outline and then a libretto inspired by the tale of the death of Siegfried, a hero of Norse-Germanic mythology

through whom a corrupt world was destroyed and replaced by one of hope. Wagner soon realised that one opera wouldn’t be enough for his purposes and ultimately created a series of four music dramas: Das Rheingold (a prologue); Die Walküre (Siegfried’s origins); Siegfried (his youth); and Götterdämmerung (Siegfried’s death and the destruction of Valhalla). His intention was that these works would not be performed separately: “At a specially-appointed Festival,” proclaimed Wagner, “I propose … to produce those three Dramas with their Prelude, in the course of three days and a fore-evening.” Wagner’s plan did not take into account, however, the inordinate amount of time between conception and completion of Der Ring des Nibelungen, and the increasing impatience of his patron. Das Rheingold was completed in 1854. Die Walküre was not finished until March 1856 as Wagner became involved in a friendship with Mathilde Wesendonck and undertook a concert tour in London. Due to financial reasons, and with Wagner diverted by different musical challenges, the final two operas were set aside for over a decade. In the meantime, Wagner’s patron, King Ludwig of Bavaria, wanted the two completed operas (to which he held the copyright) to be staged, and arranged premieres of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. Wagner protested vehemently, wanting to be able to direct the performances, but was unable to do so: he was living in Switzerland with Cosima von Bülow, who was already married, and returning to Munich would have caused scandal.

The premiere of Die Walküre on 26 June 1860 was attended by such musical luminaries as Liszt and Brahms and garnered generally good reviews. Its Bayreuth premiere, where it took its rightful place as part of the Ring cycle, was on 14 August 1876. Wednesday 24 June at 8pm

Schubert - Bicentenary of Premiere Written by Paul Cooke Painting by Moritz von Schwind

A SCHUBERT EVENING Unfinished watercolor by Moritz von Schwind (World History Archive / Alamy Stock Photo )

The libretto was written by Georg Ernst von Hofmann, who had also commissioned the work: he had in mind a vehicle for the baritone Johann Michael Vogl, who had met Schubert in 1817 and become a gifted interpreter of his Lieder. Die Zwillingsbrüder had limited success, although it did garner seven performances and a commission for another Singspiel. The weakness of the libretto, which features a love triangle involving identical twin brothers and a young girl, is sometimes seen as a factor, as is the disparity between the superficiality of the subject matter and the more refined nature of Schubert’s music. Wolfgang Mozart Jr thought it contained “some pretty things but is kept a little too serious”.

Guides to the greatest classical music of all time will routinely praise some of Schubert’s symphonies, piano music, chamber music and songs. They never direct our attention to his operas, yet these take up more space in the complete edition of his works than any other form in which he wrote. Over a period of a decade and a half he completed 11 and began another seven, recognising, perhaps, that they were his best chance of achieving fame and fortune. Or, if not that, at least the freedom to compose, away from the drudgeries of being a schoolmaster. Die Zwillingsbrüder (The Twin Brothers) was not Schubert’s first work for the stage, but it was his first to be produced, receiving its premiere at Vienna’s Kärntnertortheater on 14 June 1820. It was a one-act Singspiel, a form of music drama now regarded as a genre of opera and perhaps a waystation in the development of a recognisably ‘German’ opera. Singspiel featured spoken dialogue interspersed with music, was often comic in tone, and was regarded as a middle- to lower-class entertainment.

Two months later, Die Zauberharfe (The Magic Harp) premiered but was no more successful than its predecessor. Another six months later, at the same theatre and with no staged works allowed because it was Ash Wednesday, and emblematic of the true nature of Schubert’s talents, his song Erlkönig was performed: twice. EMI 4 64323 2 47 Lieschen, on her 18th birthday, is eagerly awaiting her marriage to Anton. At her birth, her father, the bailiff, agreed with a friend Franz Spiess that, in exchange for a sum of money, Franz would be allowed to marry

Lieschen when she came of age. Spiess left for the war and was presumed dead but he suddenly returns to claim his bride. Franz’s identical twin brother, Friedrich, returns to the village on that same day. Each of the brothers believes that his twin was killed in the war. They are never in the same place at the same time and are mistaken for each other. While one brother tries to marry Lieschen, the other gladly revokes his right to it, leading Der Schulze to believe that the old soldier is mentally impaired and is unfit to marry his daughter. The twins finally meet and Lieschen is allowed to marry Anton. The conspiritors, D787. Singspiel in one act. Libretto by Ignaz Castelli after Aristophane’s [Lysistrata]. First performed Vienna, 1861. EMI 4 64325 2 1:05 While the men are away fighting, the Baroness convenes a meeting of the women. Udolin, the Baron’s messenger, dresses as a girl to spy on them. The Baroness wants the women to keep their men away from a life of violence. They swear an oath that they will withhold all sexual favours until the men promise to give up fighting. The men return home from the war and Udolin reports on the women’s decision. The men decide to retaliate by refusing to give any affection. The women are upset by the men’s indifference and the Baroness finds it difficult to keep them to their oath. Udolin and his girlfriend, Isella, trick the Baroness and the women into bearing arms. The Baroness admits defeat and the men admit that they have been conquered by love and will give up fighting. Der Taucher, D77 (1815). Dietrich FischerDieskau, bar; Gerald Moore, pf. KATISHA: Jacqueline Dark, cont Opera Australia Ch; O Victoria/Brian CastlesOnion. Opera Australia OPOZ56016 1:28 Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, disguised as a wandering trombonist, arrives in Titipu looking for his beloved, Yum-Yum, a ward of Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting but is now Lord High Executioner. Pooh-Bah informs Nanki-Poo that Yum-Yum is to marry Ko-Ko that very day. The Mikado has just decreed that unless an execution is carried out in Titipu within a month, the town will be reduced to the rank of a village. Nanki-Poo, in despair over losing Yum-Yum, is preparing to commit suicide. Ko-Ko makes a bargain: Nanki-Poo may marry Yum-Yum if, at the end of a month, he allows himself to be executed. Ko-Ko would then marry the young widow. Katisha arrives from the court, to claim NankiPoo as her husband. He rejects her and she swears vengeance. It now turns out that the law states that when a married man is beheaded, his wife must be buried alive. Yum-Yum is now unwilling to marry so Nanki-Poo challenges Ko-Ko to behead him on the spot. Ko-Ko instead sends Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum away to be wed and when the Mikado arrives in Titipu, he is presented with a false affidavit of the execution. The Mikado however is searching for his son who ‘goes by the name of NankiPoo’. When Katisha reads Nanki-Poo’s name on the death certificate of the executed man, the conspirators are sentenced to death. Nanki-Poo will only reveal that he is still alive if Katisha is persuaded to marry Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko woos and wins Katisha and she begs for the Mikado's mercy for him and his accomplices. Ko-Ko explains that when a royal command for an execution is given, the victim is, legally speaking, as good as dead and the Mikado agrees. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum then reappear. Everyone in Titipu celebrates. Ballet: Pineapple Poll (arr. Mackerras 1951). Philharmonia O/Charles Mackerras. Saxon Crusader Ivanhoe arrives at his estranged father Cedric's home in disguise, along with two unwelcome guests, Norman knights. Knight Templar Sir Brian asks about Cedric's lovely ward Rowena. Cedric angrily declares she will only marry a Saxon. Unrecognised, Ivanhoe describes a tournament which the English knights won, and Sir Brian was beaten by Ivanhoe. Sir Brian wants his own back: at which Rowena says Ivanhoe is sure to meet the challenge. After she leaves the two Normans plot to abduct her after an upcoming Royal a tournament. Rowena still doesn't recognise her lover Ivanhoe. Ivanhoe warns another guest, Isaac, a Jew from York, that the Templar plans to kidnap him. The two men leave together. At the tournament King Richard the Lionheart is taking part in disguise. Rowena is made Queen of the tourney. Ivanhoe, in a different disguise, challenges Sir Brian, wins, but is wounded. Prince John insists he remove his helmet to be crowned victor, and he is recognised by his father and Rowena. King Richard is making merry with Friar Tuck. Robin Hood arrives saying Cedric, Rowena, Ivanhoe, Isaac and his daughter Rebecca have all been captured by the two Normans. Everyone rushes to the rescue. Cedric and Rowena are prisoners. Sir Maurice plans to force Rowena into marriage, promising that Ivanhoe will be safe if Rowena and Cedric comply. Cedric is not impressed, but Rowena appeals to De Bracy's honour as a Knight and begs him to save Ivanhoe. Sir Brian declares his own plans to woo, and win, Rebecca. Ulrica warns Rebecca that death is the only path to safety. Brian promises Rebecca jewels and rank if she'll submit to him, but she leaps on to the parapet, threatening to jump. A bugle sounds: King Richard and his troops have arrived, and Brian rushes off to defend the castle. The wounded Ivanhoe thinks of his love, Rowena. Rebecca, who loves Ivanhoe, tends him, then describes the battle as it takes place below the window. Ulrica sets the castle on fire. Brian carries off Rebecca while Ivanhoe can't protect her. King Richard rescues Ivanhoe from the conflagration. Captured, Sir Maurice is sent to surrender to Prince John. Cedric finally agrees to Ivanhoe and Rowena's marriage, but the Templars have sentenced Rebecca to burn at the stake for supposedly bewitching the Christian Knight unless a champion will fight for her. Ivanhoe rushes to the rescue. Brian offers to champion Rebecca but the Templars take it as further evidence that he's bewitched. The exhausted Ivanhoe arrives,

sword drawn. Sir Brian attacks Ivanhoe, and gets the upper hand but as Brian is about to strike, he falls dead, unable to survive the evil passions warring in his soul. The Templars regard this as proof of God's judgement and Rebecca's innocence, and she is freed. Ivanhoe is reunited with Rowena, and the King banishes the Templars from English soil. 23:00 MUSIC FROM COPENHAGEN Hartmann, E. The elf-maids and the hunters, op 6b (pub. 1876). Wagner, R. The Valkyrie. Opera in three acts. Libretto by the composer. First performed Munich, 26 June 1870. SIEGMUND: Stuart Skelton, ten SIEGLINDE: Deborah Riedel, sop HUNDING: Richard Green, bass WOTAN: John Bröcheler, bar BRÜNNHILDE: Lisa Gasteen, sop FRICKA: Elizabeth Campbell, mezz VALKYRIES: Elizabeth Stannard, sop; Lisa Harper-Brown, sop; Kate Ladner, sop; Jennifer Barnes, sop; Donna-Maree Dunlop, sop; Zan McKendree-Wright, mezz; Gaye MacFarlane, mezz; Liane Keegan, cont Adelaide SO/Asher Fisch. Melba MR301091-94 3:43 Siegmund, illegitimate son of Wotan, father of the gods, stumbles exhausted into an unfamiliar house. Sieglinde finds him lying by the hearth, and the two feel an immediate attraction, not knowing that they are twins. They are interrupted by Sieglinde’s husband, Hunding, who asks the stranger who he is. Learning that they are enemies, Hunding tells his guest they will fight to the death in the morning. Alone, Siegmund calls on his father, for the sword he once promised him. Sieglinde having given Hunding a sleeping potion, tells Siegmund of her unhappiness and of the mysterious stranger at her wedding, blind in one eye, who had predicted that only a hero would be able to dislodge the sword he had hidden in the ash tree. In the moonlight Siegmund knows that Sieglinde and the sword, belong to him. He pulls the sword from the tree and claiming Sieglinde, they escape into the night. Hunding pursues them and Wotan orders his favourite daughter, the valkyrie Brünnhilde, to protect Siegmund. Fricka, Wotan’s wife and goddess of marriage, insists that Wotan must defend Hunding’s marriage rights against Siegmund. Realizing he is caught in his own trap and will lose his power if he does not enforce the law, Wotan submits to his wife’s demands and orders Brünnhilde not to interfere. Moved by Siegmund’s love for Sieglinde, Brünnhilde disobeys her father. Wotan breaks Siegmund’s sword with his spear, leaving him to be killed by Hunding, who is then killed by Wotan. Brünnhilde brings Sieglinde, carrying Siegmund’s child, to her sister valkyries for protection, but afraid

of Wotan’s wrath they refuse to hide her. Sieglinde escapes. Furious, Wotan punishes Brünnhilde by locking her in sleep, to be victim of the first man to find her. He relents to her pleas and surrounds her with a wall of fire which only a man without fear, a hero, can cross.

Musical Families Exploring the Bach family Written by Nicky Gluch

Photo: Pictorial Press Ltd / Alamy Stock Photo

In the 16th century, a man by the name of Veit Bach fled the Kingdom of Hungary to evade religious persecution. He settled in the German region of Wechmar, a Lutheran heartland, and so set in play events that would result in one of the most extraordinary of musical dynasties. Veit Bach was the greatgreat-grandfather of J.S. Bach. He would be patriarch to six generations of, and approximately 70 individual, professional musicians. Was it just genetics that led the Bach name to be, literally, synonymous with musician? In part. But Veit Bach also moved to Wechmar at a time when Lutheran, urban and court institutions were being overhauled. Music was a guild profession and certain positions, such as town or court musician, could be passed down a family line. By the 1800s, however, when Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach was working as a court cembalist, society had changed such that the institutions which nurtured the Bachs’ music-making were no more. Indeed J.S. Bach’s grandchildren had the privilege of a university education. They could choose their profession, and so they became lawyers and painters and printers. One wonders what J.S. Bach would have thought of this, had he not died before most of his grandchildren were born. In June, the Musical Families program explores the Bach family. With J.S. Bach as the indisputable centrepiece, the program is divided into two parts, the first exploring J.S. Bach in the context of his antecedents and the second celebrating his music and that of his sons. The eldest Bach to appear is Johannes Bach (1604-1673), J.S. Bach’s greatuncle. Apprenticed to the Stadtpfeifer (town piper) of Suhl,

Johannes went on to become a town musician in Erfurt and served as organist at the town’s Predigerkirche. Johannes’ brother, Heinrich, followed him first to Suhl and then Erfurt where he worked in his employ. He later took up the position of organist at St Mary’s church in Arnstadt, fathering what became known as the Arnstadt line. Three of Heinrich’s sons became musicians, including Johann Christoph Bach who is described as the most notable musician before J.S.. Johann Michael may have been a less impressive composer, but he had an incredibly important role to play in history – he was the father of Maria Barbara, J.S. Bach’s first wife. J.S. and Maria became close during Bach’s tenure as organist at St Blasius Church in Mühlhausen. They married in 1707 and had seven children before Maria’s sudden death in 1720. Three of their sons lived till adulthood, and all became musicians, though only two, Wilhelm Friedemann and C.P.E. are remembered today. When J.S. remarried, it was into another musical family. Anna Magdalena Wilcke was the daughter of a trumpeter and her mother was the daughter of an organist. Anna Magdalena was herself a court singer and her musical talents have led to the theory that she may have penned some of J.S.’s attributed compositions. Anna Magdalena and J.S. had 13 children, six of whom lived to adulthood. Their sons Johann Christoph (Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst’s father) and Johann Christian both became composers, the latter moving to Italy and converting to Catholicism. Such is the passage of history! Australian Artist Katie Noonan We take look at one of our most versitile artists Written by Barry O'Sullivan

Keystone Press / Alamy Stock Photo

Five-time ARIA award-winning artist Katie Noonan has proven herself to be one of Australia’s most hardworking, versatile, and prolific artists. Noonan grew up with a strong background in classical music, with her mother Maggie being a well-known opera singer. She studied opera and jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium’s Southbank Campus and in 2004 for ABC Music she recorded Two of a Kind with Maggie and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Noonan has a long-standing relationship with several state arts bodies, in particular the Sydney Symphony, the Queensland Orchestra, the Australian String Quartet, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Noonan was musical director of, and performed at, the 2018 Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies.

Noonan has performed by invitation for members of the Danish and British Royal families, and His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama. She has also collaborated with the Australian Chamber Orchestra on Luminous, the Sydney Symphony in Benjamin Britten’s Les Illuminations, and collaborated with the classical guitarist Karin Schaupp, an internationally sought-after recitalist and soloist. Their combined forces created a fresh spin on Latin jazz and classical pieces from the musical masters of South America on the recording Songs of the Latin Skies in 2011.

Noonan’s technical mastery and pure voice make her one of Australia's most versatile and beloved vocalists. A mother, singer, producer, songwriter, pianist and businesswoman, the songstress first received widespread praise as the angelvoiced vocalist of indie-pop band George and has since taken audiences on sublime excursions through jazz, pop, and classical music. Her various releases include music from her folk/jazz trio of 14 years, the self-titled album Elixir in 2003, and her gold-selling top ten solo album Skin in 2007. In 2008, Noonan was a support act for Cyndi Lauper in Perth and was invited on stage by Lauper to sing along with Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Noonan’s affinity with jazz shone through on the ARIA award-winning album, Before Time Could Change Us. Recorded with revered jazz pianist Paul Grabowsky in 2005, it captured the breathtaking beauty and emotion that characterises her work. Consisting of words written by the poet Dorothy Porter, the recording tracks the mysterious shifts and changes of a relationship. The album won an ARIA Award in the same year for Best Jazz Album. On her 2008 ARIA winning release Blackbird, a jazz album of Lennon and McCartney cover versions, she collaborated with an ensemble of iconic jazz players including Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, and John Scofield. On this year’s International Jazz Day on 30 April, Noonan announced the release of her twentieth studio album, The Sweetest Taboo, taking listeners back to where it all began in her youth with the iconic pop songs of the 1980s that first ignited her passion for music. Putting It All Together We talk Jazz Beat Written by Lloyd Capps Illustration by isaxar/istock

I’m often asked what I’m planning to play in The Jazz Beat next Tuesday. All too often I have to admit that I don’t know since that’s four or five days away. That might sound a bit slapdash and carefree, but the truth is that it all depends on what is hitting the right spot for me. Most likely it will include the CD I’ve been enjoying at home over the past couple of days. Then the question is what will go with it? That sounds rather random but it’s the way I put a program together at home. The boundary is wide but at the same time, contained by my jazz collection accumulated since CDs first came on the market in 1978. Everything that goes into the program comes from my own collection. In the 14 years since the program began, my travels have taken me to many places where finding a CD store, let alone one that sells jazz, is not at all easy. It has been a challenge to find such a treasure trove in Morocco, Cuba, Hungary, Austria or Spain, but these days it’s surprisingly difficult to find a good jazz store in New York. The Jazz Beat reflects the music I enjoy and love sharing with others. It has a rather loose format, but usually contains two vocal tracks – one male, one female. Roughly halfway into the program, there is always a track featuring the Miles Davis Quartet, Quintet or Sextet. There may be some early recordings of Miles playing with Charlie Parker or in a highly successful collaboration with the Gil Evans Orchestra. There is, though, an impenetrable wall in the Miles Davis repertoire that I will never go around. It was erected in August 1969 when Miles crossed the line with his recording of Bitches Brew.

That album heralded a change of direction for Miles as he started to play with the different sounds of funk and amplified instruments. It may have sold millions of albums, but I never play anything from that period. Why? Because I don’t like it! I admit that may seem self-indulgent, but I only play music that I enjoy.

Everything that

goes into the program comes from my own collection

Having chosen those three tracks (two vocals and one Miles), the rest is an enjoyable treasure hunt amongst my drawers full of CDs to search for something that has not been played for a while and which will suit the mood of the program – usually some small combos playing relaxed jazz standards. Importantly, I look for a recent track from a contemporary Australian group. There, that’s how I program The Jazz Beat. I could tell you more but I have to work on getting my next program into shape. You’ll hear it on Tuesday at 7pm. Hope you will like what I choose to share with you so that we can enjoy it together. Tuesday 2 June at 2pm

Why Jazz Is Cool We take a seat on The Urban Jazz Lounge Written by Leita Hutchings Illustration by Leita Hutchings

I’ve always liked a walking bass intro; a Dave Brubeck Square Dance that you can dance to, or clap in syncopation. That rhythm: the rhythm you can walk to; cook to; love to; chat to; the pulsing heartbeat; that’s the rhythm of life. The way I see it, jazz is the daddy of rock ‘n roll, and the grandchild of classical music. When you boil that down, that’s a whole lot of expression. And then you throw in just how talented these singers and musicians are. I mean, to know instinctively where to - place your hands just because it feels right - because you know your instrument so well - or how to skip along with some music, just because you felt it so intrinsically. That’s a lot of talent! That’s unique to jazz, and what I like sharing. It’s the philosophy I like to weave into the fabric of the Urban Jazz Lounge. Now, take a singer like Billie Holiday, who created the 'soul' genre basically, and a musician like Satchmo, who played it like he sang it; that’s the epitome of expression and cool. And that’s what jazz is too, the epitome of expression and cool. So, my job then, as the program designer and presenter, is the joy of sharing. I have the fabulous, enviable position of sharing everything I think is wonderful and good about jazz as it strikes me. My daddy was a self-taught, honkytonk jazz pianist, so my musical bent tends to be more of a bar room kind of jazz, with a bit of a blues edge to it. Prodigies fascinate me; musicality fascinates me; old, new, known, unknown; it doesn’t matter, as long as deep down in your bones, you think: 'this is good'. To me, the Urban Jazz Lounge is a promise, of time and pleasure, shared. And so, every Saturday at midday, I can honestly look forward to saying 'Hi, I’m Leita Hutchings, welcome to the Urban Jazz Lounge.' Saturday 26 June at 12pm

CD REVIEWS

The Sweetest Taboo Katie Noonan ABC Music

Torrid Zone Crossroads Quintet Midwest Crush Music

Crowded House, Sting, Annie Lennox, and Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston — these are the singers (and their songs) that inspired Katie Noonan to pursue a musical career. On this eclectic compilation, Noonan is joined by four of Australia's finest jazz musicians, Zac Hurren (saxophones), Sam Keevers (piano), Phil Stack (double bass), and Evan Mannell (drums) — her stellar band. Highlights include a delicious version of 1927’s, If I Could, Billy Joel’s, Just The Way You Are re-invented with a new bolero beat, and a gentle interpretation of Whitney Houston’s, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, which really works. This is a collection of

modern poetry and jazz music. Perhaps it's the only genre large enough and with cerebral integrity for Noonan’s voice to be truly heard and understood. Throughout, Noonan takes flight and spreads her wings gloriously towards the stars.

Torrid Zone was released early last year and is a box set encompassing nine albums recorded by Nucleus and/or Ian Carr in the early to mid-1970s. Their first album, Elastic Rock, the focus of this review, has just celebrated its 50th anniversary, having been recorded in January 1970 and released in March.

opening track, 1916, almost a fanfare over a bedrock of busy percussion, through to the brief but Bacchanalian free-for-all of the closing Persephone’s Jive. Of particular note is the work of Karl Jenkins, whose electric piano playing produces 'a fragile, shimmering bell-like sound', and whose oboe provides a bracingly astringent tone. Readers may be familiar with him as the classical composer of Adiemus and The Armed Man.

Like Miles Davis, trumpeter Ian Carr wanted to incorporate the sounds and rhythms of rock music into the improvisational modern jazz he had been playing. The members of Nucleus were all established musicians and their experience and individuality is evident throughout Elastic Rock, from the

LISTENERS' LETTERS Ooh La La

Faith Restored Recently I had cut back to listening to Fine Music because of the lack of forthcoming program information which was a major reason I became a subscriber. I really value Fine Music Sydney for its carefully researched curated programs that play full works and are intelligently presented. I realise that program listings disappeared from this station web site because of the pandemic. I was delighted to find this morning that online listings have been restored with the welcome addition of details of Morning Music. I have no problem listening to previously broadcast programs, so long as I know what works have been scheduled. Thank you. I am so grateful that you have done this. I repeat this is a service that I value greatly. And thank you for being there during these unusual times.

Please tell the show-off announcing the drive programme today it"s not smart to announce everything in French to show off. Just announce it in English and put the music on. It's a music show, not a French lesson. He needs to just shut up. Neil Bennett

FM Spectrum I don't live in Sydney anymore, but was a subscriber for many years. I still remember the joy of the station starting up on the new-fangled FM spectrum. I have fond memories of Anne Ramsay's Evensong that ran for so many years and am anxious to obtain (or borrow) a compact disk produced by MBS Records of selections from Evensong. Tim Bowden

John Bartholomaeus

Mixed Signals Over the last few weeks I'm finding that every other day the signal has become really terrible with static so loud it overpowers the music being broadcast. It may have something to do with this area being in a blind reception spot but I would like to suggest that the station negotiate with Channel 9 to have a booster placed on the TV tower on the corner of Mowbray Road and the Pacific Highway. Even if that is not possible, I would like to know why the signal is frequently so bad and if you are able to generally improve it. Thank you. Warren Abeshouse

Robert Gilchrist Classical music has always occupied a place in Robert’s life; as a child he learnt the violin and became leader of the school orchestra and a member of the Stockport Youth Orchestra, in the UK. Perhaps this is the reason a promotion asking for presenters at Fine Music caught Robert’s attention during a drive home from the airport one evening. The need for new presenters “had arisen from the arrival of digital radio”, recalls Robert, who started presenting at Fine Music in 2012.

41

A demanding job in information technology, involving frequent overseas travel meant Robert was limited to presenting late night or weekend programs. Since retiring in September 2018, Robert has taken on regular shifts during the week, in addition to programming, chairing the Enjoy, Learn, Discuss sub-committee and nominating for a role on the board - a position he has occupied for nearly 12 months. Robert comments that his favourite aspect of being a director is the opportunity to apply the skills he acquired throughout his 40-year career in business, finance, technology and strategy, to manage the many facets and challenges of operating a community radio station. “This is a very challenging time for all businesses. It's my hope that we can muster all our resources to keep the station delivering fine music for years to come!” he adds. Robert’s life outside Fine Music includes spending time with his Argentinian wife and son in Cremorne, overseas travel, recitals and playing the classical guitar. He is a lover of Baroque music, especially Albinoni and Couperin. “I'm also a big fan of Elgar and Holst and even find time for rock classics from the likes of Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton” concludes Robert, who hopes his contribution to Fine Music “helps to ensure that the station celebrates its fiftieth birthday!”
