Over the last month volunteers and staff members at Fine Music Sydney have moved another step closer to broadcasting business as usual. Last month we were all very happy to return to broadcasting live programming content around the clock. In May we launched our EOFY campaign and subscriber drive. A big thank you to all of you who supported us during this campaign, you can take pleasure and satisfaction in knowing that you are helping to keep Fine Music Sydney on air. We thank you for your ongoing support and generosity, especially in these uncertain times. We wouldn’t be here without you. Although we could not launch our 2020 Emerging Artist programs, including our Artist in Residence and Scholarship programs, this month due to the COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions, we have made an effort to check in with our current artists, who you will be reading about in our magazine over the coming months. This month we interview Harry Sdraulig whose Kruger Scholarship project was put on hold over the last few months. You can catch up with Harry In Conversation on page 6. Finally, I would like to thank the following dedicated volunteers who were involved in this months program:

Once he was a Refugee How fate brought George Szell to Cleveland Written by Nicky Gluch
Was it a tour to Australia which saved George Szell? In 1938, the ABC invited Szell to conduct a series of ‘Celebrity Concerts’ in the European off-season. Austria, Szell’s childhood home, had been annexed by Nazi Germany just weeks before. So successful was the 1938 tour that Szell was invited back to Australia for May-August 1939; it meant he was ‘Down Under’ as the events that led to World War II began to unfurl. Aware of the dangers that awaited an anti-Nazi of Jewish descent if he returned to Europe, Szell and his family boarded the ship not for Marseille but for New York. Landing on American soil a refugee, Szell taught at the Mannes
College of Music throughout the war. Naturalised as a citizen in 1946, he was finally eligible for a conducting post. And so it was that Szell found himself in Cleveland, conducting an orchestra with whom he’d remain until his death.
Szell wanted an orchestra
suiting his ability, and so he built one, with the Cleveland
Orchestra coming to love their difficult master.
György Széll was born in Budapest in 1897. A prodigal pianist and composer, he appeared with orchestras in this dual role throughout his teenage years. At 17, he added another feather to his cap when he appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic as pianist, composer and conductor. Szell soon turned his attentions to conducting, crediting Richard Strauss with influencing his gestural style. Strauss appointed him to the staff of the Berlin State Opera and he soon had appointments throughout central Europe. By the 1930s, Szell’s appointments were global; he conducted the Scottish Orchestra while holding positions in London, The Hague and touring to Australia and the United States. And then everything changed… With his pedigree, Szell presumed he’d be considered to conduct the New York Philharmonic. Instead, he ended up in Cleveland, which proved the greatest blessing. With his autocratic style, Szell might have rattled some cages in New York. But, in Cleveland, with a second-tier orchestra, being a taskmaster was called ‘dreaming’. Szell wanted an orchestra suiting his ability, and so he built one, with the Cleveland Orchestra coming to love their difficult master. Together, they became the stuff of legends! In Conversation with Harry Sdraulig Eddie Bernasconi interviews the recipient of our Stefan Kruger Scholarship Written by Eddie Bernasconi Photos by Kim Falconer
Last September you were awarded the 2020 Fine Music Stefan Kruger Scholarship to record and produce your first album, ‘The Chamber Works of Harry Sdraulig’. What inspired this project? It has long been a goal of mine to release an album of my music. As composers, we sometimes receive high quality recordings of live performances which we are unable to distribute publicly. Typically, the agreements surrounding these recordings only permit private or archival use, and this can be a source of considerable frustration as it vastly limits the potential audience for your work beyond those who attended the concert. This is where a studio-recorded album can fill that void. Albums remain an important means for composers to disseminate their work, but they can also be very expensive to produce, especially if you want to work with the best available musicians. I was lucky to line up an outstanding cast of players to record my chamber music, many of whom occupy principal roles in Australian professional orchestras. Without the generous funds and in-kind support of the Stefan Kruger Scholarship, the project would simply be unfeasible. I am tremendously grateful for this opportunity.
How would you describe your work? I would describe myself as a contemporary classical composer, or a composer who writes art music for the concert hall. With its loosely tonal and harmonic-driven foundations, my music seeks to leverage the technical and expressive abilities of classically-trained musicians, many of whom play in established orchestras or chamber music ensembles. My music tends to be included in concerts alongside music from centuries earlier – I rarely find myself working with specialist new music ensembles. I do, however, hope and believe that I have something new and current to say!

What is your process for each composition? It obviously varies, but I am very much a through-composer – with some exceptions, I write from bar 1 and finish at the final bar. I also like to juggle multiple projects concurrently so that if I ever get stuck with one piece I can quickly switch focus to a different one where the ideas happen to be flowing more easily. Usually I have the full structure of the work and most of the musical material laid out in my head before I start writing, and the composing itself becomes a task of turning a murky, cloudy concept into a crystallised form. I always guide my musical choices on the strengths of the instruments being used and to the particular requirements or expectations of the commission.
Has the pandemic impacted current or future projects?
My recording project for the Stefan Kruger Scholarship has certainly been impacted. The recording studio was closed to the public shortly before my first session was due to take place in March, and I’m currently in discussions and consultation with the Fine Music staff about when recording sessions could resume and what social distancing requirements may be in place when they do. It is a really strange time and I’ve certainly had my fair share of cancelled gigs. However, I’ve also been able to enjoy online performances of concerts I would otherwise have been unable to attend, so there’s been some silver lining.
What is next for you? At the moment, I’m working on an overture for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (as part of their 50 Fanfares Project), a new wind quintet for Arcadia Winds, a string quartet for the Goldner Quartet, and a few other interesting projects that will be announced soon. Giovanni Bononcini The man who got in Handel’s way Written by Anne-Louise Luccarini
Born in Modena on 18 July 1670, 350 years ago this month, Giovanni Bononcini was the firstborn son of Giovanni Maria Bononcini, court violinist, composer, and author of an influential treatise on counterpoint. Giovanni Maria died when Giovanni was only eight and his brother Antonio still an infant; he did not know that both his boys had inherited his talents, that Queen Sophia Charlotte of Prussia would one day call Giovanni, “il grande Bononcini”. Giovanni was sent to Bologna, where he learnt to sing and play the cello, and composed so well that he was elected to the illustrious Accademia Filarmonica at the exceptionally young age of 16. That year, he published a number of remarkably mature chamber works, followed by large-scale church music. When he was 20, a masterly sacred oratorio drew attention in exalted ecclesiastical circles in Milan, and the brothers moved to Rome. Young Antonio was employed in the orchestra of Cardinal Pamphili, Giovanni as house musician to Filippo II Colonna, where he met the poet Silvio Stampiglia. Their resultant five operas brought Bononcini instant fame throughout Italy and beyond. In Queen Anne’s London, where Italian opera was not popular, Il Trionfo di Camilla ran for an unprecedented 64 performances (in English!) at Drury Lane. Bononcini resisted attempts to entice him to England: opera was under papal ban in Rome, so he and Stampiglia were busy writing hundreds of dramatic chamber cantatas, admired as models of grace with their sensitive word-painting and enchantingly subtle use of chromatics and counterpoint. Gasparini wrote of their “whimsicality, beauty, harmony, artful study and creative inventiveness”. The death of his patron freed Bononcini to travel to Venice, then Vienna – where the Emperor’s favour meant he could afford to have his brother with him – and also to visit Berlin at the Queen’s invitation. The War of the Spanish Succession ended this comfortable arrangement: Antonio returned to Modena and Giovanni to Rome, in the

service of the Austrian ambassador. There was a new Pope, opera was back, and Bononcini composed a serenata to mark the birthday of the Habsburg Empress, a glittering outdoor spectacle. Lord Burlington, a starry-eyed and enormously wealthy young English Italophile, saw it and conceived the idea of endowing his native land not only with Palladian architecture, but also with a constant supply of Italian opera. And so was formed the Royal Academy of Music, around Bononcini, Ariosti, and the King’s idol, Handel. Handel, as Music Director, travelled to Dresden to recruit top Italian singers. It unravelled quickly. Bononcini’s first operas were successful, Handel’s were not. Handel had the unpopular Hanoverian king’s favour, Bononcini was supported by the Duchess of Marlborough, widow of

the national hero, a Jacobite. The rivalry became the subject of gossip, summed up in a witticism, “Strange all this difference should be / Twixt Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!”, which was not far from the truth. Bononcini had to go, but how? A timely accusation of plagiarism proved the final straw. Now 60, he admitted defeat. His brother had died in Modena and so, with nowhere else to go, Giovanni made his way slowly back to Vienna. There, in honour of past service, Empress Maria Theresa granted him a small pension. It was enough.

Isaac Stern in Australia We look at a Ukranian genius down under Written by Paul Cooke
On one occasion in 1954, at an inadequately heated Sydney Town Hall, Isaac Stern, playing a “great deal of Bach”, had to rush backstage between every movement to immerse his hands in hot water. Despite this and the fact that, at another concert, proceedings were temporarily halted by a chirping cricket, Mary Cleveland, wife of the US consul, felt that attending all eight of Stern’s Sydney concerts “was one of the great musical experiences” of her life. Isaac Stern was born on 21 July 1920 in the small Ukrainian town of Kremenetz. While he was still an infant, his family fled the uncertainties of the Russian Revolution and moved to San Francisco where his mother had relatives. She, a professional singer, gave him his first musical lessons. Stern regarded Naoum Blinder as his only true teacher, learning from him not only the violin and about music in general but also about “attitude, ethical stance, and commitment”. He made an unofficial debut in 1936 playing Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 and his official debut the following year with Brahms’ Violin Concerto. His repertoire would extend from Vivaldi to Dutilleux, and he was renowned for playing each piece with impeccable technique and tone and in its “proper style”. In 1947 Stern toured Australia. Although during the war years he had travelled to Iceland, Greenland and the South Pacific entertaining troops, this was his first ‘civilian’ tour outside North America. His name was new to many Australians because his recordings had not yet reached them, owing to wartime restrictions; they were more likely to have seen his hands and heard his playing in the recently released film Humoresque. It was the beginning of a long and affectionate association. Stern made frequent and often lengthy tours until the early 1970s. He visited not only capital cities but also regional centres such as Armidale, Broken Hill, Shepparton and Toowoomba; during his 1954 tour his itinerary encompassed 33 appearances during 13 weeks. He was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald’s reviewer in 1947 for “his remarkable gifts - great strength and faultless attack in strongly accented passages and a masterly legato in sustained melody”, and in 1954 for his “allround warmth and breadth of musicianship”.
Pictorial Press Ltd / Alamy Stock Photo
In 1947, Stern had attended a performance by the Queensland State String Quartet, met the Australian violinist Ernest Llewellyn, and been impressed by the tonal qualities of his playing. On his subsequent tour they played Bach’s Double Violin Concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He also facilitated Llewellyn’s visit to America on a Fulbright Scholarship: when Llewellyn founded the Canberra School of Music, he acknowledged Stern as its ‘father’ and the Juilliard School as providing its blueprint. On his last concert tour of Australia, Stern inspected the incomplete school and then, in 1985, visited Australia to participate in a benefit concert in tribute to Llewellyn, with the proceeds going to fund a scholarship. Through Llewellyn, Stern met the violin maker A.E. Smith. He was one of those visiting musicians who would allow Smith to model instruments on the examples of such as Stradivari. Smith in return made a copy of a Joseph Guarneri violin for Stern in appreciation of his great artistry, his support of Llewellyn and “what it can mean to the musical advancement of this country”.

Artabanes tells the new king Artaxerxes that his (Artaxerxes') brother was the assassin, and has the brother executed. But then Arbaces is found with the murder weapon. Refusing to testify against his father, he is presumed guilty. Having failed to persuade his son to escape from prison and lead a revolt, Artabanes plans with Rimenes (an army captain) to kill Artaxerxes, offering the hand of his daughter Semira (who is in love with Artaxerxes) as an inducement. Artaxerxes delegates to Artabanes responsibility for hearing Arbaces' trial. Artabanes orders the death penalty for his son, to the horror of Mandane and Semira. Artaxerxes visits Arbaces in prison awaiting his fate, and sets him free. Artabanes and Rimenes then find the cell empty and, assuming that Arbaces has already been executed, decide to proceed with their plot

Iphigenia is to marry Achilles who swears he will take her place. The angry Greeks demand that the sacrifice take place so that the goddess may be appeased and the ships sail. Telarc CD-80374 1:14 Josephine, daughter of the captain of the ship HMS Pinafore, is in love with a lowerclass sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. Her father, Captain Corcoran, intends her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Sir Joseph's advocacy of the equality of
18
humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to declare their love for each other and they plan to elope. The captain discovers this plan and sends Ralph to the brig. Little Buttercup now reveals her longheld secret. Many years ago, when she ‘practised baby-farming’, she had cared for two babies, one ‘of low condition’, the other ‘a regular patrician’. She confesses that she mixed up the babies. Ralph was the well-born; the Captain was the low-born. Sir Joseph now realises that Ralph should be the Captain and the Captain should be a lowly sailor. Sir Joseph's marriage with Josephine is now out of the question. Despite his former championing of equality, it does not extend to his own marriage to the daughter of a common sailor. He hands her to Captain Rackstraw. The former Captain, now of humble social rank, is free to marry Buttercup. Suite from The tempest, op 1 (1861). BBC PO/Richard Hickox. Melodiya MA 3026 3:07 Natasha and Andrei become engaged but when Anatole declares his love for Natasha she decides to elope with him. Their plans are thwarted and, in her despair, Natasha does not notice that Pierre is declaring his love for her. Napoleon invades Russia; Kutuzov is greeted enthusiastically by the Russians before the battle at Borodino. Kutuzov decides to retreat and allow the French to take Moscow in order to preserve his army and save his motherland. The French army enters the burning city. Pierre becomes obsessed with killing Napoleon in revenge for the suffering of the Russian people. Whilst lying gravely wounded, Andrei talks of Natasha in his delirious ravings. She appears and, when he is convinced she is real, he declares he still loves her. Natasha begs forgiveness and Andrei dies in her arms. Russian prisoners, including Pierre, are being taken with the French army as it retreats from Moscow. They are rescued by partisans. They and the Russian soldiers greet Kutuzov
with jubilation and thanksgiving for the routing of the enemy. Excerpts from Russian folksongs. Galina Vishnevskaya, sop; Mstislav Rostropovich, pf. EMI 5 65716 2 11 23:30 INTERLUDE With Peter Poole Britten, B. String quartet no 2 in C, op 36 (1945). Emerson String Quartet. Decca 481 5204 29

LÉÏLA: Desire Rancatore, sop NADIR: Celso Albelo, ten ZURGA: Luca Grassi, bar NOURABAD: Alastair Miles, bass Salerno Opera Theatre Choir; Salernitana PO/Daniel Oren. Brilliant Classics 94434 1:43 After many years, Nadir and Zurga meet again in a village of pearl fishermen. Their friendship in the city had almost been destroyed by their mutual love for a beautiful
young priestess. Each had renounced his love for her and had vowed eternal friendship to each other. They reaffirm this at their meeting. The veiled priestess, Léïla, arrives to pray for the safety of the pearl fishers. Léïla recognises Nadir but makes no sign of recognition. Despite his vow, Nadir had come to the village in response to a rumour that Léïla was there. Later, Nadir, sleeping nearby, wakes recognising Léïla’s voice as she prays and sings alone in the temple. They declare their renewed passion. Léïla confides to the High Priest Nourabad that she is afraid to stay alone in the temple but he says she must do this, on pain of death, to fulfil her vows to Brahma. She recalls that, as a child, she was brave in giving refuge to a fugitive fleeing from his enemies. He had rewarded her with a necklace that he asked her to wear always. When Nadir comes back to the temple, fearful of Nourabad’s threats, Léïla urges Nadir to leave but not before they once again declare their love. As he leaves, he is captured by the fishermen who demand Nadir’s death for violating the temple. Zurga, as their leader, argues for mercy for Nadir. However, after Nourabad removes Léïla's veil, Zurga recognises her as his former love. Consumed by jealousy and rage, he orders that both Nadir and Léïla be put to death. A violent storm erupts. When the storm has passed, so has Zurga’s rage and he feel remorse for his anger. As he listens to Léïla’s plea for Nadir’s life, his love for her is rekindles but he refuses mercy for them. Leila is taken away to the funeral pyre. Zurga sees her handing a necklace to a fisherman asking for it to be given to her mother. He rushes out and seizes the necklace. He realises that it is the necklace that he had given her many years ago. Surrounded by a crowd, Nadir and Leila are now resigned to their deaths. A glow appears in the sky; Zurga rushes in to say that the fishermen’s camp is ablaze. They hurry away and Zurga frees Léïla and Nadir telling them to flee. Zurga pays with his life for freeing the lovers. 22:00 CONTEMPORARIES Prepared by Elaine Siversen Weber, C.M. Quartet, op 18 (1806-09). Mamud had them exchanged at birth so that Melindo is thought to be the legitimate heir while Zelim is thought to have no claim on the throne. When a marriage is proposed between Melindo and Rosane, the heiress to another Sultanate, Mamud decides to reveal the truth. Eventually a settlement is reached with Zelim declared the rightful heir to Mamud’s empire while Melindo, in marrying Rosane, becomes the heir to the secondary kingdom that is Rosane’s inheritance. Spirit of England John Barbirolli and the Hallé Orchestra Written by Nicky Gluch
John Barbirolli was of the opinion that conductors are born and not made. It was a fair argument for a man born into a family of professional musicians, who benefited both from their European origins and his own British nationality. Indeed, the young Giovanni Battista considered himself a Cockney! It was while serving in the army in World War I that Barbirolli adopted the name John. It was also there that he received his first conducting opportunity. Barbirolli’s battalion had formed a volunteer-orchestra; when the conductor took ill, officers found Barbirolli scrubbing the floor and asked if he might like to take over. It was quite the romantic start!
After the war, Barbirolli resumed his career as a cellist but he gradually began to receive more conducting opportunities. In 1926, he was invited to conduct the newly formed Chenil Chamber Orchestra whose concerts impressed Frederic Austin, director of the British National Opera Company (BNOC). When the BNOC disbanded in 1929 and a touring company was formed, Barbirolli was invited to be its musical director. Three years later, the conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, Hamilton Harty, took leave of absence. Four conductors were named as guest directors, including Barbirolli. Did Barbirolli know then how important this appointment would be? One imagines not, for he could not have foretold what the next decade had in store. Barbirolli was in America when war broke out, having succeeded Arturo Toscanini as conductor of the New York Philharmonic. He soon returned to England, feeling the urge to help his own country in their time of need. After 10 weeks, he returned to New York but shortly after arriving, received an appeal from the Hallé: the orchestra had lost most of its players, could Barbirolli come home and save the ship from sinking? That he did, and with immense practicality recruited anyone he deemed competent on their instrument, regardless of their musical background. Perhaps he similarly believed that musicians were born and not made. Or he perhaps he understood how much of life comes down to opportunity, and Barbirolli sure knew how to grasp those! Emerging Artist Tom Avgenicos We take a look at a rising jazz talent Written by Barry O'Sullivan Photo by Aaron Blakey
Falling in love with jazz at the early age of nine Tom Avgenicos also inadvertently discovered his future career path. He may not have known it at the time, but when his mother brought home one of the jazz educator Jamey Aebersold’s popular music method books to amuse two restless primary schoolboys on their school holidays, the wheels of his future had begun to turn. Tom, with his older brother Michael, happily played along with the CD attempting to improvise as they progressed. Their father, a jazz fan, began to introduce the boys to the recordings of the giants, including saxophonist Joshua Redman and trumpeter Miles Davis. The boys were hooked!
Upon graduation, he led his own ensemble, Delay 45, on an international tour of Europe performing in Cologne, Berlin, Siena, and Amsterdam receiving mentorship along the way from a selection of some of Europe’s leading players including Jonas Burgwinkel, Jeff Ballard and Matt Penman. Tom states that this tour was instrumental in shaping the improvisational language of his band, which who then went on to record their debut album big ears, which was reviewed and described by Sydney Morning Herald’s Keystone Press / Alamy Stock Photo Jazz Critic, John Shand, as “a bold new chapter in Australian Jazz”. Being mentored by the acclaimed trumpeter Warwick Alder, Tom’s improvisational skill developed to the stage when he was able to enter and become a finalist twice in the James Morrison Generations in Jazz competition while still in high school. In 2018 he graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with firstclass honorshonours. While completing his studies Tom was the recipient of the George and Margaret Henderson Scholarship, a Global Mobility Scholarship as well as being awarded the Outstanding Musician of the Year.

Tom was awarded third place in the brass section at the National Jazz Awards, Australia’s prestigious jazz competition in Wangaratta. Tom was also Sydney Improvised Music Association's (SIMA) "TRIGGER" Artist of the Year in their Winter Jazz Program. When asked – into the future what kind of music he wanted to create – Tom replied, “I’m into such a wide range of music at the moment so it’s difficult to say. Hopefully music that is interesting and unique, that also reflects my personality and interests.” Friday 3 July at 12pm
Has COVID-19 killed New Jazz? Emergent Jazz Written by Keith Pettigrew
Emergent Jazz provides an opportunity for the next generation of jazz musicians to shine. As they study the ‘Jazz Standards’ that have stood the test of time, they understand what makes these great tracks work, analytically and gutturally. When we intellectualise the harmonic improvisation, but the body senses the syncopated rhythm, great jazz emerges. Their original compositions and playing are not yet confounded by commercial reality and express the wonderment of exciting music.

In these CoViD times, the entertainment industry and our emergent musicians have been crushed, with audiences forced out of closed venues. Broadcasting has a key role in keeping audiences entertained and musicians in the public eye. Fine Music exists to bring the two together. While there are no recent radio audience surveys, there is clear evidence of a dramatic listening increase in Fine Music Sydney’s broadcasts, streamed from our website. A pandemic workforce operating at home on computers is a natural for streamed broadcasts, bringing fine music and fine jazz to an increased audience. Jazz has been part of Fine Music Sydney since it began 45 years ago. We have also recently embraced the strategic goal of promoting Australian musicians and composers, with a focus on the young. Music might retreat, but with Fine Music Jean-Féry Rebel Sydney promoting new Australian jazz Library/Public Domain via Gallica our Digital Emergent Jazz program and
subscribers continuing their support, the future of jazz is bright. Our Emergent Jazz program is new and includes three key areas: young Australian jazz musicians, as they emerge from their training grounds; new Australian jazz; and new jazz from across the planet. This is not jazz by the greats of the 1930s, 1950s, or 2000s. It may be their tunes, but it is from musicians of our own generations who live by their performances. In supporting young musicians, we look to the jazz programs at Sydney’s University of NSW and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as well as Conservatoria in other cities and the James Morrison Academy of Music within this program. These students and recent alumni are refining their musical skills, exploring their musicality, and discovering the commercial world of music.
38
Emergent Jazz is relying on students’ own recordings of ‘Jazz Standards’ and their own compositions. Whilst on campus, the students frequently form cross-year combos that reflect the emergence and synergy of extraordinary skills. But as students, the affordability of recording opportunities is limited. Fine Music Sydney has an outstanding recording studio, financed out of subscriber donations. As Emergent Jazz matures, we hope to bring fresh studio recordings, helping students emerge into the music industry. For emergent Australian jazz, we are indebted to the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia and the Australian Government supported AirIt network. This allows Australian musicians to upload their music for broadcast across Australia’s community broadcasting network, such as Fine Music Sydney. This is exciting new music and the next stage for the emergent musicians in reaching a wider audience. And finally, a touch of new jazz from the international stage. The world is full of extraordinary new jazz. Bringing the best to air completes the frame of emergent jazz. Emergent Jazz program is dedicated to young Australian jazz musicians. Sydney Schubert Society The rise of the Schubertiades Written by Ross Hayes
“Schubertiade” by Julius Schmid (1897) Historic Collection / Alamy Stock Photo
The Sydney Schubert Society Inc. was founded in 1953 by Paul and Norma Williams. The Society is dedicated to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the work of Franz Schubert as well as the music of Schubert’s time. Past presidents include Robert Gay, one of Australia’s leading music tour leaders and music educators, and Anthony Ernst, a director, dramaturg, lecturer and arts administrator who is currently Executive Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Our current President is Goetz Richter, the Chair of Strings at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He was recently awarded an AM for “significant services to music as a concert violinist, artistic director, mentor and educator”. Since its foundation, the Sydney Schubert Society has presented more than 380 Schubertiades. These intimate concerts revive the spirit of the gatherings of Schubert’s friends in which many of the composer’s works were first performed. Each Schubertiade is introduced with reference to the cultural and musical importance of the program to Schubert and his work by the president of the Society and curator of its programmes. The Sydney Schubertiades aim to preserve an informal context which characterised audience gatherings of the original Schubertiades in the early 19th century. Normally, there are five Schubertiades each year shared between St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, North Sydney and St. Columba Church, Woollahra. Each month, on the 4th Saturday, at 5 pm to 6 pm, there is a Sydney Schubert Society programme on Fine Music Sydney. For many years this was programmed and presented by Sydney Schubert Society and Fine Music stalwart, Jan Brown.
39
In more recent years this role has been taken by Fine Music Presenter, Ross Hayes. Ross says that he tries to bring a variety of Schubert’s music and delights in exposing our listeners to some of the lesser-known works by Schubert such as a series he presented on Schubert’s operas. Subsequently there has been a series on Schubert’s String Quartets and, more recently, a series on Schubert’s Symphonies. With a rich source of wonderful music available from the pen of this Austrian master composer, Ross feels that there will always be interesting programmes for your delectation every month. Crossroads Quintet Midwest Crush Music
American soprano Kate Lindsey’s second recording for Alpha-Classics demonstrates her wonderful voice and strong characterisation. There are three works on the disc that all address the topic of Ariadne, the lover of Theseus who was abandoned on Naxos and transformed into a star in her grief. The opening work is the cantata L’Arianna by Alessandro Scarlatti, followed by Handel’s cantata ‘Ah, crudel, nel pianto mio’ and Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos. The three cantatas take us on a journey through the music of the 18th century, demonstrating a clear musical understanding on the part of all the musicians, led by Jonathan Cohen from the
harpsichord of the ensemble Arcangelo. This exquisite recording is full of musical detail that captures both the desperation, anger and love of Arianna in her betrayal. This period performance ensemble brings us a recording that can be enjoyed by any lover of classical music.
This recording from the tenor Cyrille Dubois and pianist Tristan Raës, is a beautiful tribute to the music of two sisters. The younger, Lili, is remembered as a composer who died too young, and Nadia, the elder, was a formidable force of music in the 20th century but not necessarily wellknown as a composer. Only four of the 21 tracks on the recording are by Lili, the rest are from the pen of Nadia, who disavowed her compositions following the death of her sister in 1918. Nadia spent the rest of her life ensuring the work of her sister was remembered. The joy of this recording is to hear so many songs by Nadia recorded
with exceptional care and musicality. The performances are a joy from start to finish and left this listener desperate for more. A highly recommended recording.
Crossroads Quintet debut album features a collection of talented young musicians from around the world including Zachary Finnegan (trumpet), Tyler Bauer (saxophone), Austin Thomas (piano), Brendan Keller-Turberg (bass) and Jameson Scriver (drums). The album highlights the differing musical strengths of the group spanning from straight-ahead swing to the avant-garde and everything in between. This is music that the Quintet obviously enjoys playing and their enthusiasm is evident throughout. The rhythm section is solid, the front line capable, in particular Finnegan’s trumpet work, if not particularly
inventive. Part of the attraction of the album is how different each of the tracks is containing unexpected gambits even after multiple listens. Highlights are some nice bass work from Keller-Turberg on the track I Hear You, and Tyler Bauer’s saxophone on John Galt and the pianism of Austin Thomas featured inventively throughout.

Welcome back 2MBS!! And thank you Tom Forrester-Paton for a treat of a programme perfectly timed for drifting through sunset and twilight into nightfall in the Blue Mountains: Field's Nocturne, Tommy Reilly inhabiting Vaughan Williams' Romance, and some quiet grieving per Robert Tear's Tom Bowling for the sad and difficult times we find ourselves in. Enjoyed even the 'tooth egg' amongst the classical gold! Perfectly pitched, thank you, and safe passage to all at Fine Music.
Welcome back LIVE dear friends. It has been a good job done throughout the lockdown, but to have our 'real live', spontaneous-talking presenters back in the room with us, is just great. Thank you all for your efforts, which are so much appreciated ... in particular, by us, the more or less permanently in lockdown folk. Blessings upon you all! Rae Galtsmith-Clarke

VO L U N T E E R S P O T L I G H T and played in the mandatory folk band… After university came the year-long backpacking pilgrimage.” An instrument was essential and the flute was most portable. David goes on to say: “The first country of my trip was Israel and I needed to find a teacher, so I approached the lead flautist of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra. Talk about chutzpah. I don’t think I’ve ever been so embarrassed as when he asked me how long I had been playing and I answered four weeks!”
David Jacobs David has been a director of Fine Music Sydney for 18 months. He says: “It’s an extraordinary organisation full of volunteers dedicated to their craft, and hard working employees. It gives such pleasure to so many listeners and I feel lucky to have been asked to be an appointed director.” Music has always been an essential core of David’s life, particularly classical and jazz. It started as a teenager when he joined a record club. David’s love of music expanded to playing the piano and he says: “Once I realised in the times of the flower generation that girls swooned at boys who played the guitar and sang songs of love and protest, I picked up that instrument, grew my hair long

A lifetime career with global law firm Baker & McKenzie provided the opportunity to travel extensively and visit some of the most treasured music houses of the world. One most treasured memory was attending a performance of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in the Vienna Opera House where it was first performed. However listening to Ray Charles sing Georgia in a vineyard was also pretty special. Following retirement, David auditioned and ‘to his amazement’ was accepted for the Sydney Philharmonia Symphony Chorus. He says: “Singing, in pre COVID-19 times, the great choral works with the wonderful Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the magnificent Sydney Opera House under the baton of some of the world’s greatest conductors, and rehearsed by the extraordinarily talented Brett Weymark is a privilege beyond anything I could have expected.”
