N O T E S F R O M T H E E D I T O R When we use the terms ‘classical music’ or even ‘fine music’, there is an unspoken assump on that we are referring to music from the European cultural tradi on; non-European music tends to be lumped together as ‘world music’ or even the patronising ‘ethnic music’. The Iranian-American composer Reza Vali argues in his book Return to the Origins, that “almost a century a er the end of colonialism, the dust of Eurocentric thinking s ll weighs heavily on the musical minds of the peoples of the world.” Sydney University Chinese studies academic Josh Stenberg will challenge these a tudes with a new monthly program en tled Classics from Asia, which will focus upon the classic and art music of Asia, broadly defined, including prac ces with their roots in litera , court, folk, and early modern cosmopolitan music-making. In line with our strategic commitment to support young Australian musicians, the 2024 FineJazz award recipients have now been nominated. The Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship has been awarded to bassist and vocalist Lauren White, and the Ar st-in-Residence award has gone to the Mosaic Jazz Collec ve, a young 10-piece jazz ensemble s ll on the Sydney Conservatorium jazz campus. We wish them all the very best of luck in their musical endeavours. Star ng this month, we welcome long me volunteer and first ever 2MBS Sta on Manager David James to the Fine Music Magazine team in the role of Designer. Classics from Asia Josh Stenberg talks about his interest in Asian music and his new Fine Music program Classics from Asia I was raised going to the opera in Germany and Canada, and classical music has always been an integral part of my social and leisure life. When I was sixteen years old, I le home to go to school in Hong Kong, and there I started learning a li le about Chinese music. Despite going to university in the United States, I have been involved in one way or another with Chinese music since that me, for some years shu ling back and forth, piecing together a living in culture and educa on.

During my graduate studies, I worked in varie es of Chinese musical theatre called xiqu that are (a li le controversially) most o en referred to as Chinese opera in English. For the Yangtze River form called kunqu and a Hokkien genre called liyuanxi I wrote English programs, translated sur tles, and arranged tours. Both are among the classical theatres of China, and on their stages much of China’s drama c canon is regularly enacted. That experience – and a more modest acquaintance with Vietnamese, Japanese, and Taiwanese art music – convinced me that the theatregoers and audiophiles of Western classical culture can easily appreciate the beauty of classical strands of Asian music, given an open mind and enough context. Some projects have taken me further afield. A large part of my work has been on varie es of Chinese theatre and literature abroad, a topic that’s taken me to Russia and Brazil, and for my PhD fieldwork, to Indonesia, where I was affiliated with an arts university and got to expand my taste for and understanding of classical Asian music tradi ons. A singing course I took gave me a par cular affec on for Sundanese music, especially the tembang songs, and the zither-flute duos. Twenty-five years a er first moving to Hong Kong, I’m a Chinese studies academic at the University of Sydney, teaching Chinese literature, theatre, culture, and transla on. As an academic at a public university, I’d like to think part of my job is

outreach, to make the gems of Asian culture accessible to a wider audience, which is why I proposed the new program Classics from Asia. In this broadcast, we will be focusing upon the classic and art music of Asia, broadly defined, including prac ces with their roots in litera , court, folk, and early modern cosmopolitan music-making. It’s designed to help listeners find new enthusiasms among various classical tradi ons that developed and con nue to be prac ced outside Western art music. I hope that it can contribute something novel, because it seems to me that the Asian music that Western listeners are most easily exposed to are either crossover performers and crossna onal collabora ons, or the Asian orchestras that were developed in response to Western art music, especially counterpoint and the structure of the symphony orchestra. That too is a rich vein of music, but there are old and complex prac ces – orchestral, chamber, theatrical – that operate on their own terms and command respect and a en on. At the same me, the field is vast, the infrastructure gloriously mul lingual, and my own knowledge patchy, so I value feedback and sugges ons. Not least, I’ll be learning a lot myself.

After Victor Hugo Elaine Siversen explores drama in operas ‘after Victor Hugo’ The literary works of one of the greatest of French novelists, Victor Hugo, have been the source of inspira on for opera composers who found the drama of Hugo’s novels aligned with their own sense of drama. Five operas with libre os based on Hugo’s novels have been composed but one, Il Giuramento by Verdi, is so obscure that most people are unaware of it. Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was a novelist, poet, ar st, and poli cian. His literary career spanned six decades and he le around 4,000 drawings. His most famous novels are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables, both of which have inspired 20th century musicals. In France, he is also known for his poetry collec ons. As a poli cal ac vist, he campaigned for social causes such as the aboli on of capital punishment and slavery and served in poli cs as a deputy and senator. His literary works show his opposi on to absolu sm, and many depict the condi ons in which the lower classes lived. Although France was a republic by then, his works par cularly highlight the corrupt ways of some monarchs and aristocrats. As an interna onally renowned author, his message may have helped to fuel changes in some European countries from absolute rulers to rule by the people. These themes are shown in a musical context in operas based on Hugo’s works.

This month, four operas will be broadcast including two by Giuseppe Verdi, the li le-known Ernani (7th) and the very popular Rigole o (21st). Ernani’s libre o is based on Hugo’s novel, Hernani. The concept of honour, and how it defines nobility, is at the core of the drama when a monarch ques ons his power and the manner in which he wields it. Rigole o is a more human drama. A father, who is trying to save his daughter from a lecherous duke, causes her death through his intrigues. It also shows the worst side of the upper class. The libre o is based on Hugo’s novel Le Roi s’amuse. This novel prompted an observa on that ‘Hugo was born to create stories for Verdi to turn into great operas’. And indeed, this is a powerful story and a great drama c opera.

One of the earliest opera composers to be inspired by Hugo was Gaetano Donize who composed Lucrezia Borgia (14th) based on Hugo’s novel of the same name. It, in turn, was based on the historical noblewoman, Lucrezia Borgia, born in 1480, the illegi mate daughter of Pope Alexander VI. She reigned as Governor of Spoleto, a post normally held by a cardinal. Rumours circulated that Lucrezia put poison into wine to kill her enemies. In the opera, her a empt to kill an enemy results in the death of her own son a er which she drinks the poisoned wine and dies. The historical Lucrezia died peacefully in bed. Why let history get in the way of a drama c story? Although best known by many for the gentle ballet sequence, The dance of the hours, the opera La Gioconda (28th) by Amilcare Ponchielli, is based on Hugo’s novel Angelo, tyrant de Padua. It is a drama c story of love and lust. While this lovely music is being heard, the scene being played out in another room is of an a empt to poison the heroine and the selfless way in which her rival in love, La Gioconda, saves her but cannot save herself.

The Leningrad Symphony Hitler, Stalin, and the ‘invasion’ theme by Paolo Hooke What are the inten ons of the composer? This ques on has never been more important than in rela on to the colossal Shostakovich Seventh Symphony Leningrad, a work long accused of being banal and bombas c, as li le more than programma c poster music. The so-called ‘invasion’ theme of the first movement has a racted the most a en on, regarded as a crude and overblown march in the style of Bolero. Ridiculed in Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, this infamous theme is repeated through a seemingly endless series of varia ons, developing from inoffensive humour into a monstrous muta on. Its mar al character has, of course, militaris c connota ons, but this could simultaneously indicate a destruc ve force approaching from a distance, or one whose presence and iden ty are only gradually recognized as the ‘enemy within’. The ‘invasion’ theme has been associated with the advance of Nazi forces upon Leningrad, an an -Nazi interpreta on seized upon by the Soviet leadership for propaganda purposes. Western interest was intense, the powerful symbolism of a symphony from a Leningrad under siege catching the popular imagina on. Shostakovich o en had to compose by candlelight, constantly interrupted by air-raids, in the midst of an ordeal which was to last 900 days and claim the lives of an es mated 700,000 civilians. The work was a massive propaganda coup for the regime: in the United States it was given 62 performances in 1942 alone. Photographs of the composer appeared in newspapers across the world, most notably on the cover of Time magazine showing the composer in his fireman’s helmet. The Leningrad acquired the legend of the ‘war symphony’ bringing the Soviet ba le against Nazism to the consciousness of the West. However, this blunt propaganda tool has served to obscure its true meaning, for in fact the Leningrad symphony was planned and begun before Hitler’s a ack on Russia in 1941, and consequently cannot simply be seen as a reac on to the Nazi invasion. This is proved by the fact that the Seventh Symphony was included in the program for the 1941-1942 season of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, before the German invasion of 22 June 1941. As addi onal evidence, in 1994 a sketch of the ‘invasion’ theme was discovered dated 26 June 1939. This so-called ‘invasion’ theme was in fact the ‘Stalin’ theme, known by those who were close to the composer. A er the war had begun, Shostakovich stated that it was the ‘Hitler’ theme and later when the work

was published, renamed it the ‘Evil’ theme since both Hitler and Stalin fi ed the criteria. If the ‘invasion’ theme had ini ally been mo vated by Stalin, then it is probable that the composer’s subconscious contained Hitler’s image as well. It is likely that Shostakovich came to think of the two tyrants as partners in evil, even more so a er they became allies in 1939. For Russians who lived under pre-war Stalinism the meaning was clear. Shostakovich explains in his memoir: “The ‘invasion’ theme has nothing to do with the a ack. I was thinking of other enemies of humanity when I composed the theme. Naturally, fascism is repugnant to me, but not only German fascism, any form of it is also repugnant. Hitler is a criminal, that’s clear, but so is Stalin. I suffer for everyone who was tortured, shot, or starved to death. There were millions of them in our country before the war with Hitler began. I have nothing against calling the Seventh the Leningrad symphony, but it’s not about Leningrad under siege, it’s about the Leningrad that Stalin destroyed, and that Hitler merely finished off.” The march is two things at once: on the surface an image of the Nazi invasion; on a deeper level a sa rical picture of 1930s Stalinism, par cularly the Great Terror of 1936-1938. This was an age of lies and betrayal, a long drawn out sweat of fear in which anyone at all could feel that they were the next vic m of the dreaded secret police. An era of insomnia and nerve-racked hypersensi vity, when prisons were overcrowded with supposed ‘enemies of the state’ tortured into signing false confessions. It was a me of suffoca ng sorrow, as Shostakovich describes: “Even before the war, in Leningrad there probably wasn’t a single family who hadn’t lost someone, a father, a brother, or if not a rela ve, then a close friend. Everyone had someone to cry over, but you had to cry silently, under your blanket, so that no one would see.” Therefore, a er understanding the inten ons of the composer, we can recognise the march as deliberately vulgar and repe ous – a universalised image of stupidity and crassness which assumes terrifying propor ons, a generalised picture of evil. In this light, the Leningrad is, in Shostakovich’s words, “about terror, slavery, the bondage of spirit. The Seventh is not just about fascism, but also about our [Soviet] system, about any tyranny and totalitarianism in general.”

John Wilbye

Robert Small looks at the music of the late Renaissance composer

John Wilbye (1574-1638) was one of the most accomplished composers of English madrigals at the end of the Renaissance. He never married, and spent most of his life away from London, in Suffolk. Nevertheless, he was held in high esteem as a composer, published two volumes of madrigals, and edited the Second Booke of Songes of John Dowland. He was a master of that most sublime form of music for unaccompanied voices, the sixpart madrigal. Wilbye’s enduring fame rests on his acute sensi vity to the text and the use of ‘false rela ons’ between the major and minor modes. As described by the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts: “John Wilbye was viewed as more apprecia ve of literary excellence in choosing texts for his music than other madrigalists. He abandoned abrupt contrasts and changes of mood for a prevailing tone, giving his madrigals an ar s c unity rare among English contemporaries. He was a master of rhythm, and in his passages. verbal accent is counterpoint to musical metre. He also experimented with sequence, recurring refrains, and thema c development, in such works as Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis and Draw On, Sweet Night. His skill in vocal orchestra on is seen in Sweet Honey Sucking Bees, where the full number of voices is not kept in constant play, but in ever-changing smaller groups. He some mes repeated substan al phrases or whole sec ons for structural clarifica on.” These quali es are appreciated to this day, with numerous recordings, and concert performances testament to Wilbye’s enduring musical appeal. For example, Draw on Sweet Night in six voices, published when the composer was 35, has become one of Wilbye’s most cherished works and has been recorded by the likes of I Fagiolini, The Tallis Scholars, and The Consort of Musicke. The text, as melancholy as anything John Dowland penned, is belied by the beauty and richness of Wilbye’s music: Draw on, Sweet Night, best friend unto those cares That do arise from painful melancholy. My life so ill through want of comfort fares, that unto thee I consecrate it wholly. Sweet Night, draw on! My griefs when they be told To shades and darkness find some ease from paining, And while thou all in silence dost enfold, I then shall have best ࢼme for my complaining.

This leads to a fascina ng, and highly entertaining movie biopic of Wilbye’s life called Draw on Sweet Night. Music is the food of love, made in 2015, directed by Tony Bri en, and available on streaming pla orms in Australia. Tony Bri en’s movie is a wonderful recrea on of Wilbye’s me at Hengrave Hall, as music master to Sir Thomas Kytson and his family. The narra ve relies on contemporary records such as Kytson’s will, but with a healthy dose of postmodern thinking to plausibly help fill in the gaps in what is known of Wilbye’s life. Upon Sir Thomas’ death, Wilbye (who was le nothing in the will), le Hengrave to live in re rement at Mary Darcy's house in Colchester. He is buried in the graveyard of Holy Trinity Church, in Colchester town centre, where his plaque can be viewed on the wall of the church. 2MBS celebrates 450 years since the birth of John Wilbye with a special program on Baroque and Before, 10PM Friday 9 February 2024


Commemorating three diverse musicians

Paul Cooke looks at the work of French violinist and composer Pierre Rode, Australian musician Fritz Hart, and Scottish choir leader Hugh Roberton

At 2MBS Fine Music Sydney we commemorate the significant anniversaries of composers and performers, in music and, on occasion, in words. Some mes the anniversary is all-consuming, as when we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven in 2020. Some mes it's an opportunity to shine a light on largely unknown musicians – or, in this case, three.

The first of these is Pierre Rode, French violinist and composer, born 250 years ago on 16 February 1774. Taken to Paris, he a racted the a en on of the Italian Giovanni Ba sta Vio , and as a 16-year-old gave the first Paris performance of the la er's Violin concerto no 13. Two years later, he premiered Vio 's 17th and 18th violin concertos at the Théâtre de Monsieur in performances directed by the composer. Though Rode was appointed professor of violin at the newly established conservatoire (and ul mately collaborated on a manual of instruc on for the violin), his life was that of a peripate c musician. In 1799 in Madrid, he met Boccherini, who may have assisted him in the composi on of his Violin concerto no 6, while in 1802 in Germany, Spohr heard him and was greatly impressed by his playing. In 1812 he premiered Beethoven's Violin sonata, op 96. The work was dedicated to Rode, and the final movement wri en with his

style in mind, with Beethoven wri ng that, “I had to consider the playing of Rode. In our finales we like rushing and resounding passages, but this does not please R and this hinders me somewhat.”

and then an interna onal one with a visit to North America in 1926. Roberton was knighted in 1931. The Australian connec on? The other two musicians whose anniversaries we are celebra ng were both born in February 1874. Both have an Australian connec on, though only the second is musical.

Hugh Roberton was born and lived in Glasgow, whereas a young funeral undertaker and self-taught musician, and inspired by the Jubilee Singers from the United States, he founded in 1906 the Glasgow Orpheus Choir, which gave its final concert in 1951 on his re rement. Early repertoire included glees and folk song arrangements, but increasingly Roberton composed and arranged songs and part-songs, the most well-known being All in the April evening and Mingulay boat song. The choir achieved a na onal reputa on,

Fritz Hart, born near London on 11 February 1874, played a significant role in the development of Australian music, as composer, conductor, conservatorium teacher and director, and is deserving of a full program and ar cle dedicated to his influence. Suffice it to say now, that a er an educa on at the Royal College of Music and experience conduc ng opera, opere a, and musical comedy, he arrived in Australia in 1908 for a conduc ng engagement with J.C. Williamson, originally for one year but extended to four. He then joined the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne, where he spent a quarter of a century. He worked with Nellie Melba, and his students included Margaret Sutherland and Peggy Glanville-Hicks: as a teacher and mentor, he was regarded as being encouraging to female composers. World Radio Day By Robert Gilchrist In November 1894, in the by Louise Levy basement of the Faculty of Science in Bordeaux, using a Hertz resonator equipped with a telephone, Albert Turpain sent and received his first wireless signal. He used Morse code over a distance of 25 metres, through four walls, each 50 cm thick. It was le to Guglielmo Marconi to patent the first tunable wireless receiver in 1900 and so commercialise this extraordinary new medium. The word ‘radio’ – derived from the La n word ‘radius’, meaning spoke of a wheel or beam of light – replaced the word ‘wireless’, around 1920. The introduc on of mobile phones in the late 1960s further expanded the scope of this ubiquitous medium. For many genera ons, radio has remained the most far reaching, easily accessible communica on medium informing and entertaining all sectors of society. In some parts of the world, radio has been used to fuel hatred, division, and conflict. Progressive legisla on and regulatory mechanisms have now been passed in many countries, resul ng in radio that broadcasts balanced news and independent journalism. The decision to choose 13 February as World Radio Day (WRD) coincides with the day that the UNESCO established its own ‘United Na ons Radio’ in 1946. The objec ves of WRD are to raise awareness amongst the

public and the media regarding the importance of radio. It’s also intended to encourage decision makers to establish and provide access to informa on through radio, as well as to enhance networking and interna onal coopera on among broadcasters. The 2024 World Radio Day serves to highlight the following: •

The indelible history of radio and its powerful impact upon news, poli cs, drama, music, sport, and more. The ongoing u litarian value of radio as a rela vely free and portable public safety net during emergencies and power outages brought on by natural and human-made disasters such as storms, earthquakes, floods, heat, wildfires, accidents, and warfare. The con nuing democra c value of radio to serve as a grassroots catalyst for connec ng with underserved groups that include migrants, religious minori es, and poverty-stricken popula ons. Radio also provides an instantaneous bellwether of public opinion conveying free speech expressed in a public forum.

UNESCO recognises and understands the tremendous variety of business models and technology architectures in radio around the world, including the independent nature of its companies and

organisa ons, large and small, plus the idiosyncrasies of its on-air personali es. Thus, broadcasters are encouraged to bring their own culture, style and sensibili es to their celebra ons leading up to and during the February 13 event. World Radio Day is also an opportunity for radio sta ons to connect on-air with fellow broadcasters around the world. UNESCO invites radio sta ons to take the ini a ve for such broadcasts. It’s a truly remarkable achievement for a major mass communica ons medium to remain relevant a er 100 years and yet s ll be a force for freedom of expression, joy, and knowledge. As we proudly celebrate its story, let’s welcome radio’s future as it moves into the next century.



High Five: Noel Mason By Barry O’Sullivan Noel Mason is one of Australia’s most versa le and accomplished bassists. He has performed with many Australian jazz luminaries including Dale Barlow, Errol Buddle, James Morrison, and the late Bernie McGann. In 2015 he moved to New York to take a scholarship at the Manha an School of Music and had the privilege of studying and performing alongside many dis nguished American ar sts including Jason Moran, Mark Turner, Ari Hoenig, When did jazz music enter your life and who were the ar sts who influenced your style most? My interest in jazz began quite late in my musical development. I’d been exposed to other kinds of music through childhood from my father who listened to a lot of old blues and rock ‘n’roll. Through high school my brother started playing a lot of jazz and I wanted to be able to ‘hang’ so to speak. So that began my journey of trying to understand this music and play it competently. I was really inspired by the greats on my instrument who could play things I didn’t quite understand at the me. Paul Chambers and Ray Brown were the first bass players whose styles I really focused on trying to emulate. What are your current musical projects? Over the last couple of months, I’ve been touring with the Vampires. In amongst these shows I’ve also been booking more of my own gigs at different venues around town. I also play in a couple of bands that have weekly residencies. Plus, I work a lot as a sideman, which is fun. I feel like it’s a healthy me for live music in Sydney right now, so I’m fortunate to be working most nights of the week. What are some of the challenges that may have confronted you as a musician so far, and how have you overcome them? To commit to a life in music means

going against the grain. The career path for a musician can be unpredictable and it can also take a long me to get established. As you get older, and your priori es change, it can present challenges. For example, my schedule can change dras cally week to week, so scheduling other commitments can some mes mean I have to make sacrifices. I’ve spent years priori zing my career but I’m star ng to ques on if I need to con nue doing so and to what extent. It’s a daily challenge, but it does keep things interes ng, and it’s anything but monotonous. What are some of your other interests outside of your musical career? I’m into fitness so have always tried to maintain a rou ne of some kind throughout my adult life. I’ve also always enjoyed animated films since childhood, and in my spare me will o en read. You are home alone on a Sunday night. What music would you choose to listen to and why? Depending on how I’m feeling, I’d try and find something new that I hadn’t heard before. Although if I was cooking dinner or doing admin or something, I’d be more concerned with se ng a mood and going for something I was already familiar with. Stan Getz, Eddie Harris, Ahmad Jamal would be there somewhere.


Volunteer Spotlight Pamela Newling Laurie Smith talks with Fine Music’s Board Secretary Why do you volunteer with 2MBS Fine Music Sydney? I have been a listener for decades and decided to volunteer in 2017 following my re rement. I began as recep onist, then helped edi ng and proof-reading for this magazine (Fine Music). I par cularly enjoyed seeking stories for this Volunteer Spotlight for about five years. There are so many interes ng people who volunteer at the sta on. They have diverse backgrounds – in IT, teaching, medicine, marke ng, PR, general management and more. Each brings unique and valuable skills and experience to the sta on that help make it such a success. I have also had a s nt as secretary of the Management Commi ee, and in recent years have joined the Board, serving as Board Secretary. Through all these roles, the magic factor at the sta on has been its people. It is a happy place to be because we are united by our shared love of music. Is there a link between your volunteering today and your professional career? Not in a musical sense. However, my ability to contribute does draw on the roles I had during my career in government, educa onal and not for profit organisa ons. Early on, I was fortunate to work in interes ng and varied secretarial roles including in the Philosophy

Department at Newcastle University and on a pos ng to the Australian Embassy in Cairo in the early 1970s. I wanted to travel, but not just as a tourist, and the experience of living in another culture was fascina ng. Back in Sydney, I moved into managerial roles at the Law Society of NSW, the University of NSW, and then with the Financial Services Ins tute of Australasia, where governance was a priority as we executed a merger between two membership associa ons and the sale of an educa on business. Where does your love of music come from? Music has been part of my life forever. It was always playing at home on radio and later, on the record player. My mother was a pianist with a beau ful contralto voice and was ac ve in church and community choirs. My father liked rich bass voices such as Paul Robeson; ‘screeching sopranos’ less so. I studied the piano but didn’t persevere with the required prac ce. I sang with the Newcastle Gilbert and Sullivan Society for a few years and in local choirs for Handel’s Messiah. What are some of your musical favourites? Choral and chamber music top the list, with jazz not far behind. Special moments for me started in

Newcastle in the 1970s, with live performances by Acker Bilk and Cleo Laine. Other highlights have included the joy of the opening of the Sydney Opera House and one of Dame Joan Sutherland’s final performances. Most recently, outstanding performances of Handel’s Samson, Verdi’s Requiem and Mahler’s Symphony No 1 have reminded me how lucky I am to have access to world class music in our beau ful city.


Deep blues and a rich Australian songbook Alex Siegers and Casey Golden at Foundry 616 By Virginia Ginnane Lightning split the sky above a line of wet plane trees as I stepped up from Harris St. Ul mo and hung a right at a stack of beer barrels into Foundry 616. Dark and mellow, the low-slung speakeasy with a gorgeous Yamaha grand piano and black table se ngs was an in mate escape from storm and stress. “It’s the classiest dive bar in Sydney,” enthuses Foundry’s sound guy Chris Wilson. Owner Peter Rechniewski, former Ar s c Director and cofounder of the Sydney Improvised Music Associa on (SIMA), laughs and adds “It’s the only real jazz club in the Sydney scene.” With world-class music. The recent roll call includes the James Morrison Sextet, the Mike Nock Quartet, Lionel Cole (launching his album With Love), Gregg Arthur, Mary Coughlan, and The Baker Boys. Since September 2013, Foundry 616 has showcased top- er Australian jazz ar sts and welcomed special interna onal guests, spotligh ng both current and future jazz luminaries, and suppor ng emergent and established musicians.

The 2021 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship winner, Alex is passionate about reviving the songs of fine female songwriters of the past. “It’s become a bit of my mission to bring those great tunes back to the stage,” she tells us. Judy Bailey and Kerrie Biddell (both were her teachers at the Con), and Georgia Lee from the 60s, singing blues from the deep south (the Yarra River) are just three – and Alex is introducing some of her own. She wrote the lyrics for the story she sang supersonically to honour escapologist Harry Houdini, who made Australia’s first-ever powered flight – in Diggers Rest in Victoria!

Mel ng moments Sca ng across octaves like a kite, Alex then synchs with Casey, his head down as his delicate notes and black and white fingers create sweet points with her voice. On finding those harmonious musical moments, Casey explains, “that’s the joy and the fun and the mystery of it all. In any ensemble music, you can get to those moments when it’s feeling good, where you telepathically go to the same place. They’re the moments you live for.” Dedicated to jazz Giving breath to this musical experience, Foundry 616 has a nurturing rela onship with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, providing a regular gig for current students and recent graduates. “Peter Rechniewski is a great supporter of jazz and music in Sydney,” says Alex of the owner, also a former Fine Music presenter. Who knew that? Then there was the crazy truck trip from Oodnada a to Woolloomooloo … you know the rest. This gal has ‘been everywhere.’ Alex opened the old chestnut with the memory of her mother laying a bet when she was a kid, that if she ever sang it in public, she’d get 100 bucks. She sang it – incredibly fast (“I move my mouth quickly”) – and Xmas was payback me.

Of his me as 2MBS Fine Music’s Ar st-in-Residence in 2019 with States of Chaos, Casey says, “it was a very produc ve and prolific period for us as we had access to the great in-house studio at Fine Music. Also, the airplay we were ge ng gave us a good reason to record a lot of new music, so it was a valuable experience for us as a band.” Following the release of his new album Orbits, there will be more shows and new recordings planned later this year.

In Addi on, Alex will soon release her premiere album featuring the Australian tunes from her show. In recognising the value of the 2MBS scholarship, she says, “the Weatherley has been huge for me. Having an injec on of funds and the support of a successful sta on like 2MBS has meant I’ve been able to record my first solo album and 2MBS will be loudly and proudly promo ng it when it comes out, which will be a huge help. I may never have been able to do this without the scholarship.” And Alex’s dream for the future? “Singing as a soloist on stage in the Concert Hall at the Opera House would be amazing.” Which song? “Anything!” she laughs.

Chances are that you’ve heard Len Vorster. Born in South Africa, he has been resident in Australia for the last 40 years, and is a pianist, accompanist, and teacher. He has achieved recogni on for his recordings of de Falla (with Merlyn Quaife) and a two-piano version of Holst’s The Planets (with Robert Chamberlain) and has also recorded with Deborah de Graaff and Lauris Elms. Night Thoughts took shape as a response to the extended COVID lockdowns in Melbourne: contemporary Australian composer Jillian Rose Tymms’s nocturne Silberstrief, wri en for Vorster, addresses the fear, isola on – and hope – felt by many. Two of the 15 items on

this recording were composed in the wake of the Spanish flu pandemic of a century ago – Bloch’s In the Night, mostly sombre and ending peacefully, and Hindemith’s Nachtstück, once again melancholic but featuring a sparkling middle sec on that reminds the listener that all is not dark in the night sky. Nocturnes by Tchaikovsky, Clara Schumann and Fauré, as well as more recent composi ons, a est to a though ully programmed, sensi vely played recital.

As the tle of pianist and composer Mike Nock’s newest recording indicates, it is all about the facility of perceiving sounds. More per nently, interpre ng them in a par cular way. Mike Nock has embraced a varied sixty-five-year musical journey, receiving many awards and honours throughout his lengthy career. The spontaneously delicate bijou opener Prologue is followed by Sunrise, from Nock’s first solo album in 1978. The improvisa on, Conundrum, then leads to Vale John, celebra ng the life and friendship the pianist experienced with the drummer/ bandleader John Pochée, who tragically died a few days before this recording. A stellar Nock improvisa on follows, then a delicate interpreta on of Jonathan Zwartz’s And in the Night Comes Rain, proving sonically blissful, followed by Bernie McGann’s iconic Spirit Song, interpreted sensi vely in reference to

the original. Journey Through an Imaginary Landscape takes us meanderingly towards a personal favourite on the album, Nock’s interpreta on of Bryce Rohde’s composi on, Windows of Arquez, at the album’s conclusion. The atmosphere of quiet that runs through this recording is reason alone to recommend it. There is more air given between notes than one might expect from a solo piano recording, as this session is all about becoming cognisant of sound. At all mes it is virtuosic and introspec ve, yet on occasions playful and melodic. This session of interpreta ons and improvisa ons gives the feeling of a con nua on of an in mate, unique, personal musical adventure.

Jane Irving’s’ ability to navigate the many sides of the jazz vocal genre is confirmed by this album of eleven engagingly diverse songs, some of which display her accomplished pianism and others, her superbly refined sca ng skill. Based in New York for just over a decade and having performed there in some of its top venues including Birdland, Zinc Bar and Mezzrow Jazz Club, where the album was launched, Don’t Quit Now reflects on the dark days of living in that metropolis during the COVID pandemic, while offering a diverse and engaging musical journey through the jazz spectrum. Joining Irving on the session is Josh Richman on piano, her husband Kevin Hailey on bass, and Kayvon Gordon on drums. They provide no unnecessary adornment to the songs, yet they create the perfect

ambience for Irving to deliver her delicate interpreta ons. Her voice has an effortless swing, revealing compassion and warmth when required. Favourites include the tle and opening track, where Irving offers an interes ng take on an emo ve number under a cloak of restraint. On Someone’s Been Sending Me Flowers, Irving confirms her pianism, while providing an expressive and humorous rendi on showing her commitment to the musical diversity of jazz. The recording is highly recommended to lovers of vocal jazz, and delivers crea vity, originality, and emotional impact.

Ernani, once a duke punished by his King Carlo, has become a bandit chief. He loves and is loved by Elvira who. against her will is betrothed to Silva. King Carlo also loves her. Ernani, disguised as a pilgrim, is offered the ancient laws of hospitality by Silva who refuses to hand him over to Carlo. Instead, he hands Elvira to the King as hostage and informs Ernani that his life is now forfeited to him. Ernani hands Silva a silver horn, vowing that, when it is sounded, he will kill himself. Carlo pardons his enemies and blesses the union of Ernani and Elvira. Their happiness is brief as the silver horn sounds three times. Disengaging himself from his beautiful bride, Ernani stabs himself and dies in Elvira's arms.

EMI 6 15067 2 1:22 The mayor, Baboleno Nasoni, has plans for his son, Sindulfo, to marry Countess Carlotta, a wealthy widow, so that he can pay his debts. The innkeeper, Benozzo, owes Nasoni back mortgage payments, but he can only make ends meet by engaging in petty smuggling as ‘Gasparone’. Count Erminio, who is staying at the inn, shows interest in Carlotta and she in him. The mayor, seeing his scheme in danger, quickly insinuates that the guest at his inn may be none other than the elusive Gasparone. Benozzo, disguised as Gasparone, kidnaps Sindulfo so that he can’t turn up at his wedding. He informs the wedding guests that he needs a large amount of money to obtain the bridegroom’s release from Gasparone but, in reality, he intends to pay off his debts with the money. Having twice proposed to Carlotta and been refused, Count Erminio disguises himself as a bandit and bursts in on Carlotta. Carlotta finds herself attracted to the ‘bandit’ who then abandons his disguise. They decide to marry and that she will tell the mayor that Gasparone has stolen her millions and she is now penniless. The fraudulent ransom money taken from the wedding guests pays all debts, and to ensure a perfectly happy ending, Sindulfo, after his release, is given a gun to hold, and he boasts to everyone that he has shot Gasparone.

Opera Australia OPOZ56006CD 2:15 Lucrezia Borgia, wife of Don Alfonso d’Este the Duke of Ferrara, goes in disguise to Venice hoping to find her illegitimate son, Gennaro, who has been reared by a fisher family. When they meet, he is fascinated by her until he discovers her identity as the notorious poisoner. He goes to Ferrara where he vandalises the Borgia coat-of-arms on the palace gates. Don Alfonso sentences Gennaro to death but, when Lucrezia pleads for his life, Alfonso suspects a love affair. Don Alfonso gives Gennaro poisoned wine, then leaves, but Lucrezia quickly gives Gennaro the antidote and pleads with him to leave Ferrara immediately. Gennaro, wishing to attend a banquet with Orsini, delays his departure until the next day. Seeking revenge on Alfonso, Lucrezia poisons the banquet wine, then makes her way into the banqueting hall to gloat over her hideous triumph until, horrified, she sees Gennaro. He refuses her antidote so she confesses their real relationship. Gennaro curses her and dies in agony. La Gioconda is in love with the exiled nobleman, Enzo, who has returned to Venice in disguise because of his love for Laura, wife of Alvise. The spy, Barnaba, jealous of Gioconda’s love for Enzo, accuses Gioconda’s mother of being a witch but she is saved by Laura. Barnaba then tells Alvise of Enzo’s love for Laura. Gioconda confronts Laura but recognises her mother’s protector. Alvise orders Laura to take poison, but Gioconda substitutes a sleeping potion and takes Laura’s body to her home, where Enzo is waiting. 2024 Jazz Scholarships By Keith Pe grew

The 2MBS Fine Music Sydney jazz scholarships reflect our strategic commitment to young Australian musicians. Again, this year, they a racted some extraordinary young talent. Nine applica ons for the two awards le the FineJazz crew with very difficult choices. On one hand, two trumpeters, a saxophonist, a guitarist, and a double bassist; on the other, a ten-piece emerging jazz orchestra, a polished quintet, an emergent quintet, and vocalist in trio. All warrant support from Fine Music Sydney, and that will happen through our FineJazz programs. The 2024 FineJazz award recipients have now been nominated: 2024 Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship

at UCLA, and the Siena Interna onal Jazz Workshop in Italy. There is also a family connec on, with her mother growing up in Louisiana, and her uncle playing blues in New Orleans. Not just bass, she has also studied voice. You may well have heard her at the Sydney Opera House’s Bennelong Restaurant, Restaurant Hubert, the Melbourne Jazz Fes val, Johnston Street Jazz, or even with the Sydney Theatre Company, Marvel Studios, or Ne lix. Her Weatherley Scholarship project is recording an album that reflects her American and Australian roots, fusing the inspira on of classic swing, bossa nova, and New Orleans blues. It will reflect the essence of Australian jazz, synthesising influences from all over the world to create new composi ons and sounds from the Australian jazz landscape with a goal to entertain, tell stories, and leave listeners inspired. This award was established following a generous bequest from passionate jazz lover and former 2MBS Fine Music Sydney presenter, Ken Weatherley. It is intended for outstanding young jazz musicians to further their careers in Jazz. Our 2024 scholar is bassist and vocalist, Lauren White. Lauren spent her school life playing in orchestras, choirs, state music ensembles and the Schools Spectacular. At 18, she received the Jann Rutherford Award for young women in jazz, and was mentored by jazz bassist Zoe Hauptmann, who became the inspira on for Lauren’s jazz career. Mentored also by jazz bassist, Nicki Parro , she was a finalist for the James Morrison ‘Genera ons in Jazz’ Vocal Scholarship in 2018. She graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2020 in Jazz Performance. Along the way, she has also studied at the Herb Alpert School of Music 46

2024 Jazz Artists in Residence - Mosaic

Foundry 616, with whom we are partnering in this year’s scholarship. 2024 Jazz Ar st-in-Residence The Ar st-in-Residence program is designed to support jazz ensembles with ac ve promo on, on-air and in print, and provide extensive rehearsal opportuni es. This year’s award goes to a young 10-piece jazz ensemble who are all s ll on the Sydney Conservatorium jazz campus, the Mosaic Jazz Collec ve. Mosaic emerged from a Sydney Conservatorium workshop, taking inspira on from the Australian jazz heavyweights, 10 Part Inven on. It is made up of tenor saxophones and clarinets, trumpets and flugelhorns, drums, and bass, with the co-leaders Lee Orszaczky, Chiara Mino o ,and Ravi Trachtenberg-Ray playing trombone, baritone sax and piano respec vely.


Their focus is on original Australian composi ons with deliberate emphasis on new material from women composers, challenging the stereotype of old male jazz musicians, and including the gender and racially diverse, neurodiverse, and people with disabili es. With this approach, they intend to reflect the current pa erns of Australia, music being for everyone to enjoy. Their project is to release a new album of freshly commissioned works, relying on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney for promo onal opportuni es, interviews, background ar cles, and broadcast of their music to achieve audience reach and engagement. There will be some crowdfunding to help fund the recording of their new material, for release at the end of 2024. Along the way, they will have regular performances at Foundry 616 through the good offices of venue owner, Peter Rechnieweski. FineJazz is proud to support this diverse group of young jazz musicians as it takes its place in the challenging world of Sydney jazz.
