As the World watched on in horror back in February as Russian tanks advanced on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, two Sydney musicians were exploring an idea that would transform into a moving peace song for Ukraine and involve more than seventy Australian and Ukrainian musicians, including the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and Shchedryk Children’s Choir. Shortly after the song’s premiere, Iris Zeng caught up with Paul Beard and Dan Fallon, co-founders of The Bluesberries and composers behind Blue Skies, the title of the song, to find out more.

This month, we celebrate respectively the 150th and 100th anniversaries of the births of French composer Édouard Lalo and American jazz musician Milt Jackson. Lalo’s most famous work, Symphonie espagnole, is sometimes regarded by musicologists as a one-hit wonder in today’s parlance; Nicky Gluch wonders whether this disparaging label is deserved. Phillip Cant looks at the stellar career of Milt Jackson, arguably one of the best-known vibraphone players of the 20th century. Jackson worked with most of the jazz ‘greats’ of the era, famously forming the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1952 together with pianist John Lewis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Kenny Clarke.

Last, but absolutely not least, Elaine Siversen previews Fine Music Sydney’s operatic offerings for 2023. Whether well-known, seldom performed, or completely obscure, they are, in her own words, “a kaleidoscope displaying the whole gamut of human emotions unfolding in glorious music.”

Faithful heroines in music

Zeng follows the whims of women on screen

One classic marries another It is a truth universally acknowledged that the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was a masterpiece.

Who can forget the pensive gaze of Mr. Darcy and that famous lake scene at Pemberley? Whilst Austen herself never imagined Mr. Darcy in his wet white shirt, awkwardly stumbling upon Miss Elizabeth Bennet, it is immortalised in British television history. Andrew Davies’ miniseries captures the class and genteel manners of Regency England, remaining true to the wit and provincial charm of Austen’s classic novel.

When it aired in the Autumn of 1995, ten million people watched the final episode. The steamy romance between impetuous Lizzie Bennet and haughty Mr. Darcy has since spawned a new breed of Austenites. Visitors to Jane Austen’s house in Chawton, Hampshire, will happily find the aforementioned shirt on display, whereas in Lyme Park, Cheshire – the film location of Pemberley –a statue of Mr. Darcy himself emerges from the lake. “I intended it as a funny little scene about social embarrassment. . . it seems to have affected women in quite a different way – and who am I to complain?” (Andrew Davies on the ‘lake scene’).

Just as iconic is the series’ buttery opening sequence, panning across satin ribbons and lace embroidery. Carl Davis’ elegant Pride and Prejudice Suite perfectly marries the poise of the period drama, although cheekily – oh dear! – bursts of brass barge in, much like the vulgar Bennet family!

The score was inspired by a scherzo in Beethoven’s Septet in E flat, op 20 (1800) and the finale to his Emperor Concerto (1809), both of which Austen herself might have listened to around the time of her novel’s publication in January 1813. Handel’s opera Xerxes; Mozart’s Rondo alla turca, The marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni also appear in Davis’ score.

Oh, how lucky can you get?

If anything, Austen’s observation on marriage is proved right in the 1975 musical comedy film Funny Lady, the rather lacklustre sequel to Funny Girl, based on the life of American vaudeville star Fanny Brice. Set in the 1930s, Fanny does indeed marry ‘a single man in possession of a good fortune’ –this time in the form of Billy Rose. For a Broadway diva hit by the Great Depression, Fanny’s marriage to Billy, a successful impresario, was more out of convenience than passion. Together, the duo rises in fame, but given Fanny still pines for her exhusband Nicky Arnstein, their relationship fizzles.

The opening song How Lucky Can You Get? composed by Kander and Ebb, depicts Fanny, lonely, bitter, and adorned in jewels worthy of Mrs. Bennet:

Satin on my shoulder and a smile on my lips How lucky can you get Money in my pocket right at my fingertips How lucky can you get

What begins as a flashy musical number falters, revealing the singer’s struggle in her empty marriage. A brief musical reference to O soave fanciulla, from Puccini’s 1896 opera La bohème, underscores the last two verses of the song, where Fanny belts sarcastically:

Hey there, gorgeous! Big success! What’s your secret? Just lucky I guess

More memorable than the film itself, How Lucky Can You Get? was nominated for Best Original Song.

More than a ‘one-hit wonder’?

This article was posed to me as a question: to what extent should we celebrate Édouard Lalo’s bicentenary? More and more, this question is being asked as one of appropriateness as we look back upon European history with a mind to understanding the stories which may have been obscured by the prevailing narrative. As regards Lalo, however, there appears little in his biography to suggest that he’d be better consigned to history. (Even his theatrical works are relatively non-controversial. His opera, Le Roi d’Ys is based on a Breton mythological tale, while his ballet, Namouna, is based on a story by Giacomo Casanova. While the Corfu setting does tend towards ‘exoticism’, the slave-women are the heroines, which I find charming in the context of ballet’s many femme fatales.)

Therefore, in asking this question about Lalo, the context is one of considered worth: namely, is Lalo sufficiently ‘canon’ to deserve such dedicated programming? It is a question on which I’ve enjoyed musing, and while there can be no definitive answer, I’d like to share a few ideas  in support.

Lalo was born on 27 January 1873 in Lille, northern France. At 16, he moved to Paris to study at the conservatoire, later establishing himself as a string player and teacher. Lalo’s earliest compositions were songs and chamber music, several of which will be heard across Fine Music’s anniversary programs. These include his Piano Trio no 2 in B minor (1852) and the Sonata in A minor for cello and piano (1856). As a radio station, we are the fortunate beneficiaries of such compositions. While an ensemble is limited to playing music written (or arranged) for its instrumentation, our chamber music programs can sample from across the genre. That Lalo’s music has not been forgotten thus provides us with fascinating French Romantic repertoire to juxtapose with the better-known German Classical or Italian Baroque.

Whether or not Lalo’s chamber music speaks to his enduring relevance, it does put into better context his more famous works. To know that Lalo had a penchant for the more intimate style (he played as violist, and later second violin, in the Armingaud Quartet) is to make the grandeur of his Symphonie espagnole all the more remarkable. Lalo is almost synonymous with the composition. Written in 1874, the piece is contemporaneous with George Bizet’s Carmen and evidences a fascination with Spanish idiom in French composition circles at this time.

What has always appealed to me about the piece is the simple power of the opening gesture. Like the opening of Beethoven’s Symphony no 5, the piece

starts with a unison statement that relies on the pull between notes in a chordal triad (so-mi-do) but which provides a tonal ambiguity in the initial absence of harmony. The opening of both of these works speaks to the underlying simplicity of Western music (built, as it is, on these chordal properties, and a relatively small palette of twelve notes) and therefore (to me, at least) the utter wonder that is the variety that has been produced. To elaborate, Symphonie espagnole relies on principles of accompaniment consistent with those used in Mozart’s recitatives, and yet the works sound worlds apart. This, then, is my reason for celebrating Lalo. Rather than thinking of him as a ‘one-hit wonder’ (as great a hit as Symphonie espagnole might be) I suggest that a deep dive into his work allows us to better recognise the commonalities across music and therefore to stand in greater awe at the subtleties that make pieces sound so different.

I do hope you will enjoy our Lalo celebration. It’s a rare chance to explore the oeuvre of a less famous, though no less fascinating, contributor to the wonderful genre we call Classical music.

Iris Zeng talks to the composers of an international peace song

Last February, Russian soldiers attempted to invade Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Two musicians – one, a scruffy English music producer who worked with Art Garfunkel and Robbie Williams, the other a cleanshaven journalist – riffed together at a recording studio in Glebe, Sydney. What began in the lounge room became a moving peace song for Ukraine. Seventy Australian and Ukrainian musicians, including the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and Shchredryk Children’s Choir, joined defying air raids and electricity blackouts to ask a single question – ‘why?’.

Shortly after the song’s premiere, I caught up with Paul Beard (‘Beardy’) and Dan Fallon, co-founders of The Bluesberries and composers behind Blue Skies, which begins:

I looked into your troubled eyes and said goodbye And nobody knows if this will be the last time All we ever wanted was an ordinary life

PB: It’s blown our minds that we’ve been able to succeed in what started out as an idea in Dan’s living room and has turned into this international project that has brought hope and optimism to everybody who gets connected.

DF: We came from a position of imagining the trauma in a sense of having to leave your home and loved ones. But the theme of the song really is about imagining a day when you can come back together… I’m amazed the Ukrainians who were under attack listened to the song, recognised what this is about, came on board and were equal partners in the song. It takes great courage to imagine peace when you’re being attacked.

PB: One of my favourite stories from this process was a line in the song that says, ‘all we ever wanted was an ordinary life’. On the day the Shchedryk Children Choir recorded – which involved finding a recording studio that had a bomb shelter – from the bus driver to the catering staff to the recording engineers to the kids themselves, they all said how happy they were because it was the first normal day they’d had since the war started.

Was there a particular moment that inspired you to write Blue Skies?

DF: For me, music is a way of processing what is going on. It’s like art because you take what you see and then you try and process it. The storming of Kyiv – probably the horror that this was actually happening – was the pivotal thing I was responding to. Paul had his feelings about what was going on and John (our other partner) too. And we came together and did this – a song for peace, a song for hope, and a song to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

What was it like working with Ukrainian musicians?

DF: They’re such a resilient people… With the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, you’ve got 12 to 22-year olds, the best young classical musicians from across Ukraine. You’ve got Illya Bondarenko, this 21-year-old violinist, arranger and composer who did this incredible arrangement of our song, which brought me to tears when I first heard it. We got the Shchedryk Children’s choir, which Paul did an arrangement with Roman Surzha. There are so many young people involved in this, so we’re inspired to see them and to hear them. They’re the future of Ukraine. Maryana Golovko, the female voice, also wrote lyrics in Ukrainian for us.

PB: If you listen to the choir arrangement, there’s a bit in the middle where the children stack up this incredible harmony that ends up being quite dissonant, using the word ‘why’ - the Ukrainian word chomu. That was the statement, really, why are we doing this? We are one.

DF: At one point in the band film clip, Paul looks at the camera and speaks directly to the camera, as if to say, ‘Come on, everyone!’.

PB: Oh, I really meant it. I’ve got a nine-year-old son, who’s going to inherit the world along with all the other kids, and it’s like, what are we doing? This is insanity and I really, really mean it. If I’m remembered for one thing musically, it’s that exact statement.

How would you describe the style of the music?

PB: When we started writing the main section of the song, it was evident that it was going to be an Elton John-style ballad. But as everybody was packing up on the day we recorded, I said, “Wait, what if it goes reggae at the end?” The song itself was always about optimism. Finding optimism in the darker moments… For us, the reggae section at the end came to represent that, but it was a oneshot, last-minute addition.

Having worked with Art Garfunkel, and now this charity song, what’s the difference?

PB: There’s no difference in almost every way. Obviously, this Blue Skies project is about trying to help people who are facing a bitterly cold winter with limited access to food, water, and electricity. I’ve had some amazing moments in my career, but I’m a farm boy from the middle of England who had big dreams and they came true for whatever reason. Every musical situation that I step into, I just give everything, and I try and speak my mind… in that respect, it’s no different. You show up and you sing from the heart.

If you didn’t have music, what other path would you have taken?

DF: You’d still be with the sheep!

PB: I love helping people. It’s my favourite thing, which is why this project is so special because it’s combining music and helping people. I love psychology and all that stuff, so maybe a therapist. My biggest thrill is helping people.

From Pathos to Comedy

Pathos, love, joy, valour, humour, scheming, rivalry, jealousy, and deception may all be found in the operas to be presented during 2023. It is a kaleidoscope displaying the whole gamut of human emotions unfolding in glorious music. Our monthly themes will explore these emotions and some interesting events.

As well as some well-known and popular operas, we will present others that may be completely unknown to many and, as usual, every musical era is represented as we endeavour to satisfy different musical tastes but also to widen our operatic horizons.

Opera Oscura: March, May, August, November Opera Oscura is a continuing fifth week of the month series of lesser-known operas from the programmer’s own collection. In 2023, operas are Michael Haydn’s Endimione in March and a double bill in May of Charles Dibdin’s The Ephesian matron and Thomas Arne’s Alfred (which includes Rule! Brittania), following our monthly theme, In Britain. Antonio Salieri’s Armida is in August, and Johann Reichardt’s Der Geisterinsel, based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, completes the series in November.

January: From the Stage

The great dramatic writers, Edmond Rostand, William Shakespeare, Maurice Maeterlinck, and Tennessee Williams, are the authors of the plays on which the January operas are based: Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac, Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Previn’s A streetcar named desire. Love, tragedy, and pathos abound.

February: Succession

Rossini’s opera, Semiramide, premiered 200 years ago on 3 February 1823. Queen Semiramide’s young lover assumes he is to inherit the kingdom, but the outcome is quite different when the longlost son of Semiramide and her murdered husband is nominated as heir.

The writer from The Opera Scribe describes Salieri’s Tarare as ‘a revolution in five acts’, noting that it was composed just two years before the French Revolution and depicts a popular uprising against a despotic Sultan with cries from the populace for liberty and equality. Based on Beaumarchais’ story, it is a conflict between an absolute monarch and the virtuous Tarare, who reluctantly accepts when the people demand he be the Sultan.

The other two operas are based on historical events. Handel’s Giulio Cesare is a story of intrigue, murder, and scheming to make Cleopatra the Queen of Egypt, ruling with Caesar by her side. Following the death of Tsar Boris Godunov, the first Romanov Tsar, Mikhael, is elected but faces an invasion by the Poles. The bravery of a peasant, Ivan Susanin, thwarts the plans of the invaders to capture the Tsar who is then crowned. Glinka’s A Life for the Tsar tells this story.

March: Rivals in Love

Tragedy follows jealousy in the pursuit of love. Don José and Escamillo, the love rivals in Bizet’s Carmen, are taunted by Carmen and her fickleness ends in her death at the hand of Don José. In Cilea’s Adriana Levouvrer, the actress, Adriana, and a princess are rivals for the love of the same man which ends in tragedy for one of them. A happy ending in Vivaldi’s Bajazet is the result of a tragic event that causes the one suitor to give his blessing to the marriage of his rival to the woman he himself had desired. La cour de Célimène by Ambroise Thomas lightens the mood. This comic opera is set in the court of a widowed Countess who has a dozen suitors whom she plays off against each other.

April: The Underworld and the Devil

In April, we present Rachmaninov’s Francesca da Rimini based on a canto in Dante’s Inferno. This will form part of a major celebration of the music of Rachmaninov for the 150th anniversary of his birth. The opera will be teamed with Psyche by Locke in which Psyche is rescued from hell. Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice continues the theme of rescue from the Underworld. Weinberger’s comic opera Schwanda the bagpiper tells how Schwanda is rescued from Hell when the Devil is beaten in a card game. The Devil is called Belfagor in Respighi’s opera Belfagor He causes havoc between a pair of lovers but is beaten up by the male and flees.

May: In Britain

Two operas are based on Walter Scott’s novel Ivanhoe: Sullivan’s Ivanhoe and Rossini’s Ivanhoé They are colourful tales of life in 12th century England. In Handel’s Flavio, rè di Longobardi, Flavio, King of the Lombards, is also King of ancient Britain. The story revolves around a beautiful woman who is desired by two men. When one of the men marries a less beautiful woman, his reward from Flavio is to be Governor of Britain. Henry Clifford by Albéniz is based on historical figures and events in 15th century England during the Wars of the Roses.

June: Aftermath of War Roussel’s Padmâvati is the beautiful wife of a Prince. The Mogul Sultan names her as the price of peace but, when the Prince refuses, the Moguls overrun the city. The Prince is killed and Padmâvati perishes on his funeral pyre. The Sultan’s war was in vain. The Golden Cockerel of Rimsky-Korsakov, a gift to the king from the astrologer, sounds a warning that the kingdom is in danger. The King’s sons are killed in the ensuing war, but the King marries the woman of his dreams. The astrologer claims the Queen as his reward for his gift. The King kills the astrologer, and the golden cockerel kills the King, but reality and fantasy are intertwined.

The rise of Italian nationalism was the result of the invasion of Milan by the German Emperor Barbarossa as recounted in Verdi’s The battle of Legnano. Handel’s Partenope is set in Naples where Partenope is the queen. She has numerous suitors, but one begins a war when she will not marry him. When Partenope is victorious, the complications of love take over.

July: In Disguise

Disguise is a common ploy in opera. Fauré‘s Penelope draws on Ovid’s writing and the return of Ulysses in disguise to thwart the numerous suitors for Penelope’s hand whom she has been stalling as she waits for his return. The wonderful Rossini comedy, The Barber of Seville, has the barber, Figaro, aiding the hero as he adopts various disguises to enter the house where his loved one lives with her guardian. Il giorno di regno by Verdi tells how the deposed Polish King, Stanisław I Leszczyński, returns to Poland leaving a French officer to impersonate him in Paris. The opera follows the one day when the officer is ‘King’. Two angry women in disguise assail the two men who are deciding which one of the ladies each will marry in Haydn’s L’infedelta delusa. Many disguises are adopted until the matter is settled to the women’s satisfaction.

August: Myths and Legends

Cesti’s Le disgrazie d’Amore was first presented 400 years ago on 5 August 1623. Then Blow’s Venus and Adonis is teamed with Purcell’s King Arthur and takes us from the realm of ancient myth to one of the great legends of all time. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko is based on traditional heroic ballads that weave fantasy around this 12th century historical person where the action takes place in the realm of the Sea-King. Described as a ‘legend in four scenes’, Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Viktor Ullmann is not set in the legendary sunken city of Atlantis as one would expect. Instead, the story is about Death being overcome. Composed in the concentration camp, Theresienstadt, this was the abiding hope of the inmates. It follows Janácek’s Sárka on the same night that recounts the Bohemian legend of the final battle of the fierce warrior, Sárka, the leader of a female army.

September: From Literature

Lord Byron is the author of I due Foscari, the basis for Verdi’s opera. Chabrier based his Briséïs on a work of Goethe that is in a double bill with Schubert’s comedy, The four-year post, taken from a rhyming text by Theodor Körner. Monteverdi’s The return of Ulysses is from the same volume of Ovid used by Fauré for Penelope that will be broadcast in July. The comic opera, The barber of Baghdad, by Peter Cornelius comes from tales

in One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales compiled by anonymous authors and scholars during the Islamic Golden Age.

October: Innocence Revealed

Falsely accused, the innocent victims are exonerated in Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie, Janácek’s Jenufa, Handel’s Ariodante and Weber’s Euryanthe.

November: Ghostly Encounters

A compulsive gambler becomes deranged in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades when the card that he is holding turns into a ghost. Ghostly visions appear to a governess and her charges in Britten’s The turn of the screw with a tragic outcome. The legend of the invisible city of Kitezh by Rimsky-Korsakov tells how a mist makes Kitezh invisible to attack. The ghost of its Prince, killed in battle, appears and the city turns into Paradise where the spirits of the dead reside. The sorceress in The Egyptian Helen of Richard Strauss causes King Menelaus to be confused about his wife, Helen, who eloped with Paris. Is he seeing the real Helen or a wraith who appears as Helen?

December: Comedy

In a light-hearted end to the year after many tragic operatic events, we have five comedies beginning with two short little-known operas: Auber’s La sirène and Bizet’s Djamileh. Ethel Smyth’s suffragette opera, The boatswain’s mate is a battle of the sexes. Rameau’s Platée, one of the funniest of the Baroque operas, involves deception leading to a touch of pathos. We finish the year with Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, a tale of mismatched lovers, two of whom lose their minds but are happily restored to their senses.

A feast of wonderful singing awaits every Wednesday night at 8pm in At the Opera.

Milt Jackson 100 years on

1 January 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Milt Jackson, one of the best-known vibraphone players of the last century. During his lifetime, 65 albums were released under his name as ’band leader’, with another 44 by the Modern Jazz Quartet of whom he was a member with John Lewis (piano).

Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was surrounded by music from an early age, particularly religious. “Everyone wants to know where I got that funky style. Well, it came from church. The music I heard was open, relaxed, impromptu soul music.” He started on guitar when he was seven, and then on piano at 11.

Jackson was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie, who hired him for his sextet in 1945. Jackson quickly gained experience working with the most important figures in jazz of the era, including Woody Herman, Howard McGhee, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker. Gillespie maintained a swing tradition of a small group within a big band, and for him, this was Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Kenny Clarke. Around 1950 they decided to become a working group in their own right, forming the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) in 1952.

Known at first for featuring Jackson’s blues-heavy improvisations almost exclusively, in time the group came to include Lewis’s more

ambitious musical ideas. Lewis had become the group’s musical director by 1955, the year Clarke departed in favour of Connie Kay, bringing the quartet down to a chamber jazz style. This highlighted the lyrical tension between Lewis’s mannered, but roomy, compositions, and Jackson’s unapologetic swing. The MJQ had a long independent career of some two decades until disbanding in 1974, reforming in 1981, and continuing until 1993. After that, Jackson toured alone, performing in various small combos, although agreeing to periodic MJQ reunions.

A very expressive player, Jackson differentiated himself from other vibraphonists with variations on harmonics and rhythm, and his liking for the twelve-bar blues at slow tempos. He preferred to set his vibraphone’s oscillator to a low 3.3 revolutions per second (as opposed to Lionel Hampton’s speed of 10 revolutions per second) for a more subtle tremolo. On occasion, Jackson also sang and played piano.

Among many collaborations in his musical career, Jackson teamed up with Oscar Peterson in 1981 on the album Ain’t But a Few of Us Left, a selection of jazz standards plus the Jackson-composed title track. His tune Bags’ Groove has become a jazz standard (‘bags’ being the nickname given to him for the bags under his eyes). Compositions like The Late, Late Blues, Bluesology, and Bags & Trane are signature elements of his legacy.

In 1989, Jackson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Berklee College of Music. He was often regarded as a bee-bop player, but played many styles, remembered for his cool swing, and collaborations with hard bop and post-bop musicians. He died in 1999.

Lachy Hamilton: Young, aspiring, and emergent

Young Australian saxophonist Lachy Hamilton began his musical career at the age of four, taking up piano, flute, clarinet and later, the saxophone. Having honed his music around the world, Hamilton now resides in Sydney, completing his Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the James Morrison Academy of Music in 2017, also having received the 2016 Excellence in Performance Award. Hamilton was selected for the 2015 Telluride All Stars program and has established himself as a strong voice in the new wave of Australian improvisers and composers.

When did jazz first enter your musical life and who were the musicians that influenced and inspired you?

My dad gave me my first album, a Blue Note compilation, with songs like Song For My Father by Horace Silver, and Alligator Boogaloo by Lou Donaldson. I was playing piano back then and learned these songs when I was meant to be practising my classical repertoire. At around 14, my parents bought me my first alto saxophone and I was hooked. Aside from the countless records that followed, I was mostly inspired by my friends. I formed my first band Flipping The Bird when at Pittwater High School. Having people my age to play with was the strongest force behind my development as a musician. I was also incredibly lucky to have support from school and the Scotland Island community, where I grew up.

When did you decide on a musical career and where did you study?

From an early age, I knew I wanted to pursue music, but I had no idea how. Both my parents are driven and passionate people, and I picked up on that early, forming bands, learning songs, and organising gigs throughout high school. I went on school music exchanges to Chicago at 14, had our first regular gig at a cafe in Newport when I was 16, and in my first year of university, I booked my first tour with a new band The Swing Merchants, playing the Sunshine Coast to Melbourne. Since then, I’ve always had a tour in the works. When I finished my studies at the James Morrison Academy, I had recorded my debut album Alchemy. I was getting ready for my first international tour, but Covid put a stop to that.

You’ve performed in duets, quartets, and large jazz orchestras. How does each experience differ for you?

I regularly play all kinds of music, performing with many bands. I prefer to play to everyone’s strengths, whether my originals, standards, or playing free. I enjoy playing with musicians who are comfortable if songs take a different route. We’re spoilt for choice with so many unique voices in the Sydney scene. I’ve been co-running a new series at Church Street Studios in Camperdown, Monday Night Confessions. It’s been great hearing new music from many musicians.

What is your current musical project and how has it evolved and progressed? This latest album, JAHL HESHI, is a collaboration with pianist Harry Sutherland, and features Jacques Emery (double bass) and Alexander Inman-Hislop (drums). During the pandemic, we would regularly get together with music we’d been writing. As a group, we developed a unique approach that was inspiring. We had our first gig online at the 2020 Manly Jazz Festival and recorded the album in April 2022. We have just toured it, pushing into new realms. It made me appreciate performance opportunities and I’m eager to get back out on the road to see where the music goes next.

What are your current musical challenges and how will you surmount them to further your career?

The ebbs and flows of creativity are always difficult challenges. I find it very hard to relax, to look back over where I’ve come from. Often, I find myself anxious when not practising, writing, and furthering myself; something I strive to work on. There is a never-ending list of things I’d like to do. I hope that having time out on the NSW South Coast will help me dig deep into these thoughts and issues. I’d like to move overseas and will most likely study for my Masters. There is so much great music around the world and I’m eager to immerse myself in it. I always see myself returning to Australia and this incredible scene, but for now, I’m looking abroad for a new journey and inspiration.

From Portugal to 2MBS Fine Music Sydney

Anabela Pina moved from her home in Portugal to Australia in 2012. Six years later, when she joined 2MBS Fine Music Sydney, it gave her a connection to the world she left behind. She is a prolific programmer for Fine Music. Here is her story.

I was born into a family passionate about traditional Portuguese music. My family lived in a village in the highest mountains of Portugal where music has been influential since ancient times. My grandfather played accordion, my uncles played Portuguese guitar and one was a Coimbra’s Fado singer. Not surprisingly, I started learning to play guitar when I was nine years old and, over the years, I became very interested in composition. At 17, my teacher encouraged me to accept an invitation from a radio station to play and discuss the lyrics of one of my recent composed songs. This was my first contact with a radio station.

Classical music came to my life when I was 15 after buying, at an auction, a collection of vinyl records that interested no one else. For the first time, I was introduced to a world that I had never experienced before and I became captivated by those fascinating composers, unexpected note combinations, surprising dialogues, flowing melodies... This stimulated my curiosity to know more about the composers, their inspirations and worlds and, like this, the beginning of my interest in the History of Music began.

Around this time, a friend and I created a children and youth choir at the local Catholic church. Everyone was welcome irrespective of their talent and soon this choir grew to 80 members. Initially, the goal was to sing in the children’s mass but later we realised we could offer the children the opportunity to experience a bigger world while taking our music to those in need. This enabled us to travel across Portugal and into Spain and France. To give children the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument, we came up with the idea of giving concerts where we would perform a variety of music from folk to musicals, serenades

to soundtracks and originals. This way, we were able to raise money to purchase instruments and pay for music tuition. I conducted this choir for 23 years and, to my delight, our audiences grew until we had more than 1000 people each concert.

At university, while studying Business Administration and Management (and later specialising in Communication), I had the opportunity to regularly write articles about the history of Portuguese music. I also became a member of the university choir and some other groups, one being a Portuguese folk music band that performed in one of the most iconic concert halls in Lisbon. Looking back, although I enjoyed all the projects I was involved in, the one I found most fascinating and is my favourite memory was playing together with three musicians whom I truly admired. We would take the audience on a voyage throughout the world, in each performance by inserting in every piece played, a variety of instruments from different cultures.

This was my world before arriving in Australia.

Rautavaara: Lost Landscapes

Lost Landscapes is the title of one of the last pieces composed by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. It’s a violin concerto based upon reminiscences of places that were of great importance to Rautavaara’s creative journey in the mid1950s. The first is Tanglewood, where Rautavaara worked with Copland, the second is Ascona in Switzerland, the third his Vienna lodgings (an 18th century palace that was something of a relic), and the fourth his apartment in New York. The works on the recording all date from after Rautavaara’s recovery from an aortic dissection, an event

that kept him in hospital for six months in 2004. They all have a calm and nostalgic peace about their character with sweeping melodies above buoyant accompaniment textures. The performances from violinist Simone Lamsma and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra are clear and beautiful under the direction of Robert Trevino. This recording is a relaxing and moving survey of the late music of the most important Finnish composer of the latter part of the 20th century.

This recording presents us with an intriguing view of the early career of Maurice Ravel, documenting the works he composed for the Prix de Rome competition between 1900 and 1905. To the great puzzlement of his supporters, Ravel was never successful in the pre-eminent competition for French composers, several times not even getting through the first round. This recording, which is meticulously compiled, brings us the three cantatas and the five choral fugues that Ravel composed for the competition. The choral fugues

were written for the first part of the competition, with successful finalists progressing to write a dramatic cantata to a set text. The highlight for me was the second disc which brings us the choral fugues, works that are clearly that of Ravel, reminiscent of Daphnis et Chloé, hinting at the wonderful music to come from Ravel’s mature works but having a forced quality, dictated by circumstance. I found this recording to be fascinating with beautiful playing from French singers and the National Orchestra of the Pays de la Loire.

Archetypes

In producing his sixth album under his name and his thirteenth as a leader, Harry Mitchell wanted to create an album with a unifying theme, particularly one that could convey something about our lives through music. Carl Jung’s Man and His Symbols provided him with the perfect springboard for this process. In his book, Jung proposes that some symbols and ideas are part of a universal human consciousness that has a parallel to how musicians communicate when they are improvising. Performing with Mitchell on Archetypes is a high-octane quartet of Western Australianbased first-call musicians. Saxophonist Jamie Oehlers, bassist Karl Florisson, trumpeter Ricki Malet, and drummer Ben Vanderwal encompass the musical influences on the album,

with the pianist Cecil Taylor and the saxophonist Steve Coleman embracing a spread of styles, moods, and tempos. Mitchell’s pianism and composition are full of gradation and dash with a soupçon of grace. Thus, the album is appropriately titled. The ensemble ducks and dives through his compositions like Hero with its changing time patterns, sprints through Jester, and gently strokes the face on a favourite piece, Lucid Dreaming, exhibiting that this band is one tight working team creating a stellar recording.

Pianist/composer Aaron Blakey’s latest offering is a collection of original compositions, weaving in memories from New Zealand and Australia with his time spent in Japan, in a session that is a travelogue of sorts within the jazz universe. It is hard to resist tapping one’s feet along to the swinging brass, drums, bass, and piano that these guys so expertly deliver. Infused and bursting with a multitude of melodies left, right, and centre, Blakey assembles a tight quintet of core players with whom he has frequently played in live situations, taking the listener through a journey of nine original compositions of his, which hew closely to the post-bop canon. Saxophonists Michael Avgenicos’s (tenor) and Andrew Crago’s (alto) solos are consistently sharp and engaging. Their tones adopted for the

most part are not blustery but sunshiny and pleasant with their two-horn interplay creating some dazzling moments. Bassist Tom Botting and drummer Tim Firth are calmly efficient and expertly professional, doing what needs to be done. Blakey is an extremely talented pianist who solos and comps with assurance. The addition of the National Jazz Award-winning guitarist Peter Koopman on four of the tracks is a bonus for delivering some beautifully crafted solos on Taupo Bay, Little Person, and Ebisu, the stand-out favourites. Revealing his strong musicianship everywhere, Blakey has released an album with strong themes and multicoloured hues that will make you want to revisit it often.

look after Christian and make sure he comes to no harm. For his part, Christian, however handsome he may look, cannot manage to say the right thing, especially not in the company of women. So, to help him, Cyrano writes letters in Christian’s name. These letters enthral Roxane, making her fall in love with the writer, whom she thinks is Christian. Cyrano’s corp of cadets is surrounded at the Siege of Arras, starving and abandoned. Cyrano continues to write to Roxane, always pretending to be Christian. At a moment of great tension, a wagon appears with supplies for the Gascon Cadets, a wagon driven by Roxane, who has stolen through the Spanish lines to reach the French army. As the Spanish attack, Christian is mortally wounded and Roxane finds ‘his’ last letter on his body. Cyrano decides not to tell her the truth of its author.

Roxane retires to a convent and, years later, Cyrano visits her. He has been wounded in a duel but puts on a brave face. He asks Roxane to read the last letter from Christian. When Cyrano is able to repeat it without reading it, Roxane realises that Cyrano must have been the author of all of Christian’s letters and that she has been in love with Cyrano all of these years. It is now too late, as he dies.

Romeo is in love with Juliet and is loved by her. He attends the wedding in disguise, to try to rescue Juliet from the wedding ceremony, but is discovered. Lorenzo, Juliet’s doctor and sympathetic to the lovers, provides her with a sleeping potion that will cause her to appear as if dead. He then will

bring Romeo to the family vault and rescue her when she wakes. Lorenzo is arrested and Romeo, unaware of the scheme, believes Juliet to be dead and takes poison. Juliet wakes and, finding him dead, drinks the final drops of poison and dies. Their bodies are found by Capellio and Lorenzo.

Mr. Pickwick lodges with widowed Mrs. Bardell who fancies him as her next husband. Pickwick is preparing to set off on an excursion and has decided to engage a servant as a

general factotum. He sends Mrs. Bardell’s son Tom with a note, offering employment to Sam Weller. Mrs. Bardell believes he has sent Tom away so that he can propose to her. The Baker, a keen suitor, arrives with marriage lines, ready for Mrs. Bardell to sign. Certain that Mr. Pickwick will soon plight his troth, she sends The Baker away. Pickwick is anxious because Tom has not returned. Worried about the cost of a servant, Pickwick asks Mrs. Bardell if two can live as cheaply as one. She, thinking this is his roundabout way of proposing, throws her arms around him, and declares she will ‘never quit him’.

The Baker, seeing Mrs. Bardell in Pickwick’s arms, declares he’ll marry someone else. Tom returns and finds Pickwick’s friends waiting on the doorstep. They espy him embracing Mrs. Bardell, who has fainted. Pickwick shouts an explanation to his friends, and assures them that he is ‘free’. Hearing this, Mrs. Bardell threatens Pickwick with prosecution, thereby encouraging the Baker to make another proposal.

Princess Helene and Lieutenant Niki of the Army are to be married and her father, Prince Joachim XIII of Flausenthum, declares that Niki is to be heir apparent to his throne. Niki is sceptical as this position of prince is not financially beneficial and he misses his home in Vienna and its customs. After the marriage, Niki is unhappy and secretly leaves the palace with his comrade Lieutenant Montschi for a pleasurable evening in the beer garden.

At the beer garden, Niki is attracted to Franzi, a ladies' orchestra leader. A scheming Count Lothar who wishes to have a liaison with Franzi, arranges for the Prince and Princess Helene to be present at the same venue. When Niki dances with Princess Helene, Franzi realises that Niki is married to the Princess.

Princess Helene discovers that Niki is unhappy and is longing for familiar Viennese customs. An immediate change is implemented in the palace: Viennese dress code, furniture and even meals. Niki, as expected, is happy with the new surroundings and soon willingly

accepts Princess Helene without restrictions, renouncing Franzi, who also decides that she no longer cares for Niki.

While Golaud is out hunting, he encounters a strange girl sitting by a pool in the forest. After repeated urging, she tells him that her name is Melisande, and she agrees to follow him out of the woods. They marry but, six months later, Golaud still knows nothing about Melisande. Melisande loses the ring given to her by

Golaud. He enlists the help of his half-brother, Pelleas, to find it. Melisande is carrying Golaud’s child but she and Pelleas develop an intimate relationship, which arouses Golaud's jealousy. Golaud kills Pelleas, and after the subsequent death of Melisande in childbirth, Golaud’s grandfather, King Arkel, declares that the infant daughter must now live in Melisande’s stead.

Blanche Dubois has problems dealing with reality and lives in her own world. She arrives unexpectedly to live with her younger married sister, Stella, in a cramped apartment in New Orleans. There is instant friction between Stella’s husband, Stanley Kowalski, and Blanche. She finds him loud and rough and thinks her sister has married beneath her. Stanley is suspicious of Blanche and determined to find out about her past. She is nervous and jittery and seems to have a drinking problem.

As the weeks pass, Blanche is being courted by one of Stanley’s poker-playing buddies, Mitch. Meanwhile, Stanley has discovered the secrets of Blanche’s past, that she was fired from her teaching job for involvement with an underaged student and that she lived at a hotel known for prostitution. He tells Stella, who erupts in anger after he tells her that he has also told Mitch. They argue and Stella goes into labour and is taken to hospital. As Blanche waits at home alone, Mitch arrives and confronts her with the stories that Stanley has told him. At first, she denies everything, but eventually confesses that the stories are true. She pleads for forgiveness. An angry and humiliated Mitch rejects her.

Stanley returns home to find that Blanche has descended into another fantasy and she falsely claims that Mitch had asked for her forgiveness but she had rejected him. Stanley taunts her about her lies and behaviour. She threatens to attack him with a broken bottle, but he overpowers her.

Blanche has a mental breakdown but Stella can’t believe that Stanley has raped her. When a doctor and a matron arrive to take Blanche to the hospital, she goes, saying: ‘Whoever you are – I have always depended on the kindness of strangers’.
