NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

This month Derek Parker reveals another side to the English composer Willian Walton, whom we normally associate with rather staid orchestral music. One of Christ Church’s youngest undergraduates, Walton had left Oxford University without a degree, but he was befriended by Edith Sitwell’s brother Sacheverell, who together with his literary brother and sister Edith, gave him an entrée to their avantgarde literary and musical circle in Chelsea. Walton had already toyed with setting some of Edith’s poems to music, eventually performing the score to Façade, with Edith reciting the words of the poems through a papier-mâché horn, at a 1923 private performance in the drawing room of her brother’s house. Considered scandalous by the critics, it eventually became one of Walton’s most popular works.

We also feature two lesser-known composers this month: Paul Cooke explores how World War I, politics, and jazz, moulded the short-lived musical career of Erwin Schulhoff, and Rex Burgess looks at the widely varying influences on Albert Roussel, ranging from d’Indy, Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky through to a fascination with music of the Far East.

Lastly, Barry O’Sullivan talks to jazz vocalist Hetty Kate about her formative experiences growing up in the UK, her musical tastes, international touring, and her move to Paris which she now calls home. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

The ‘sublime nonsense’ of Façade

Derek Parker delights in the witty pairing of Walton’s music and Sitwell’s poetry

There is nothing in the history of English music quite like the ‘entertainment’ devised by the poet Edith Sitwell and the composer William Walton. Façade was the product of the close friendship between Walton and Edith and her brothers Osbert and Sacheverell (Sachie). The latter trio had a reputation as leaders of the 1920s artistic avantgarde, lovers of Impressionist painting, and authors of incomprehensible poetry published in the magazine Wheels, edited by Edith.

Walton was a self-taught composer befriended by Sachie, his nearest contemporary, and as early as 1918, when he was 16, he began to toy with settings for some of Edith’s poems. The verses she eventually published together in a slim volume entitled Façade illustrate her life-long preoccupation with the relationship between poetry and music. It is probable that Walton was relatively mild in his appreciation of her theories, but his music certainly matches the verses in tone and character. For its time, it was as far out as audiences and even musicians were likely to follow. At one rehearsal a clarinettist asked, ‘Mr Walton, has a clarinet player ever done you an injury?’

Given Edith’s innate sense of humour, the result in Façade was a series of poems often reminiscent of the sublime nonsense of Edward Lear:

‘Tra la la la la la la la La!

See me dance the polka’, Said Mr Wagg like a bear, ‘With my top hat and my whiskers that (Tra la la la) trap the Fair . . .’

Walton took hold of that verse and gave it a joyfully witty setting which made it seem the very essence of Polka. Elsewhere, as for instance in Scotch Rhapsody, Edith got her own back on the huntin’ and shootin’ aristocracy which had bored her to death when she was a young woman:

‘Do not take a bath in Jordan, Gordon, On the holy Sabbath, on the peaceful day!’ Said the huntsman, playing on his old bagpipe, Boring to death the pheasant and the snipe –Boring the ptarmigan and grouse for fun –Boring them worse than a nine-bore gun.

The select audience at the first private performance of Façade in the drawing-room of Osbert’s house in London, with Edith reciting the poems through a papier mâché horn and Walton conducting his score, were unanimously enthusiastic. Less so the audience at the first public performance on 12 June 1923; society came in search of a scandal, and enjoyed one.

Later, a definitive performance was given by Edith accompanied by Constant Lambert as a fellow speaker. It was years before the work become an assured feature of concert programmes. We are lucky to have an incomplete but splendid recording by the poet with Peter Pears as a wonderful companion and foil to the poet’s inimitable, but often imitated voice.

Walton made two suites from his music for the piece, which was accepted among his most popular work. By the end of her life, Dame Edith I think got a little tired of Façade. When I tactlessly suggested to her that it contained far and away her most popular verse, she dryly remarked, ‘Yes, Willy did quite well out of it.’ So, I might have replied, did she. But so, indeed, have we all, for it is sheer delight.

Erwin Schulhoff – the eclectic composer

From Dada to jazz, Paul Cooke explores the different styles and influences of Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff’s Symphony no 5 is the focus of one of our World of a Symphony programs in June, but although it is one of the last works he composed, it doesn’t feel like the culmination of his career. There are at least a couple of reasons for this. One is his propensity for dramatic shifts in style. Joseph Machlis, in his Introduction to Contemporary Music (1961), once wrote that Stravinsky “refused to go on repeating himself” and “tackled new problems and pressed for new solutions”. This is also true of Schulhoff.

Another is the fact that the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 led to his arrest and imprisonment. Possibly as much for his Soviet sympathies as for his Jewish background, he was imprisoned in a forced labour camp in Wülzburg, Bavaria, and subsequently died, aged 48, from tuberculosis. After the Fifth Symphony, there was a Sixth (dedicated to the Red Army), a Seventh (in piano score only) and an Eighth (incomplete). But who knows in what direction Schulhoff’s career may have developed had he lived?

Schulhoff was born in Prague in 1894 into a musical, well-connected middle-class family of German descent. His mother had him perform for Dvorák who, having satisfied himself that Schulhoff could recognise pitches and harmonies, rewarded him with two pieces of chocolate, and recommended

him for private piano study with a professor at Prague Conservatory. This was followed by study in Leipzig with Max Reger from 1908 to 1910, and in Cologne from 1911 to 1914. He also had a few lessons with Debussy, and won the Mendelssohn Prize for piano in 1913.

He followed this with another Mendelssohn Prize for composition in 1918, for a piano sonata still indebted to such late Romantics as Reger, Dvorák and Brahms. But hereafter, the style of his music altered radically, influenced by his experiences in World War I. He saw action in Hungary in 1916, suffering a shrapnel wound to his hand and nervous shock, writing that the war was “nothing less than a flood, a destructive force threatening to destroy the entire culture of European humanity”. At first, he took inspiration from the Second Viennese School (Alban Berg became a friend and regular correspondent), but soon turned to Dadaism, a movement which repudiated and mocked the conventional, and emphasised the illogical and absurd. Dadaism informed such works as his Suite for Chamber Orchestra, featuring slide whistles and car horns and replacing Baroque dance movements with jazz-inflected ragtimes, tangos and the like; Bassnachtigall, with a solo contrabassoon attempting to emulate birdcalls; and a movement for piano consisting entirely of rests of different values and predating John Cage’s 4’33” by decades.

06

He relocated from Germany to Prague in 1923 and his compositions from this decade were published and performed and garnered him international recognition. They have been characterised by Alex Ross in The Rest is Noise as being toughly lyrical and Bartokian, and they continued his fascination with jazz. Opposed to the rise of German fascism, and influenced by a visit to the Soviet Union in 1932, Schulhoff turned to Communism and social realism and endeavoured to simplify his musical idiom. Symphony no 5 was written while Czechoslovakia was first isolated and surrounded by enemies and then occupied, and is notable for moods which could be described as menacing, vehement, accusatory, and antagonistic.

The pianist Caroline Weichert wrote of Schulhoff that he “succeeded in seizing and giving voice to the spirit of the time, within the forms and structure of classical music, and in a simple and heart touching way”. I can think of no better endorsement.

Albert Roussel: A twentieth century classicist

Rex Burgess looks at the music of the French sailor turned composer

Born in 1869 in Tourcoing, in north-eastern France, Albert Roussel was the son of wealthy industrialist parents, for whom music was merely a hobby. Not for their son, though, who became an accomplished pianist while still a youth, and nurtured a keen interest in composition.

Yet it was only after first spending seven years in the French navy that he finally chose music as his career, moving to Paris in 1894 to study: initially with Eugène Gigout at the École Niedermeyer, being then too old for the Conservatoire! In 1898 he began working with Vincent d’Indy at the newly formed Schola Cantorum. Those studies continued till 1908, although such was his progress that by 1902 he had already joined the Schola’s staff as professor of counterpoint, with Satie, RolandManuel, Auric and Varèse numbered among his many pupils.

Roussel’s first compositional success came in 1897 with two prize-winning a capella madrigals, followed over the next ten years by various increasingly significant chamber and orchestral works including, in 1906, the first of his four symphonies, entitled Le poème de la forêt

Influenced initially by d’Indy, Roussel started out composing highly pictorial music. He was stimulated also by Debussy, Ravel, and the allure of impressionism, although he soon realised that this alone would lead him to an impasse. Another somewhat contrary influence was the rhythmic innovation of the young Stravinsky, while his melodic imagery was nurtured by the old chansons and the charm of French folksong.

A series of tours in 1910 took him to many distant countries, including India and Indochina. This contact with music of the Far East also had a profound effect on his thinking, sensitising him to its subtleties of melodic and rhythmic inflection.

As his style and musical language continued to mature, he synthesised all these elements into an integrated approach in an idiom essentially lyrical, yet bearing the imprint of a vigorous thinker with a fastidious musical personality. In the words of one writer, “he (thereby) espoused the cause of a French neo-classicism oriented to the cultivation of the large forms: symphony, concerto, sonata, suite, trio and the like”, each of which has its place in his corpus of around 70 completed works.

Although he continued at the reactionary and increasingly unpopular Schola till 1914, Roussel had also been quick to join the progressive Société Musicale Indépendante, a breakaway organisation formed in 1910 by various prominent composers, including Fauré, Ravel, Koechlin, and Florent Schmitt.

Always forward-looking, in the mid-1930s Roussel became president of the French section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). For although he preferred to remain apart from musical groups or movements “in order to have the freedom of personal vision”, he had a strong sense of social responsibility, was always ready to help others and especially younger musicians.

08

In 1914 Roussel started working on his opéra-ballet Padmávatî, although its composition was interrupted by World War I, during which he served as a transport officer. Completed in 1918, it created a sensation on its first staging in 1923, prompting one writer some years later to suggest that “reasoned history may well rate it of an importance on a level with Wagner”, high praise, albeit a prophecy which has yet to be fulfilled.

Padmávatî will be broadcast in At the Opera at 8pm on Wednesday 7 June

High Five with jazz vocalist Hetty Kate

Barry O’Sullivan talks with Hetty Kate

Hetty Kate is a jazz vocalist whose performing style is defined by her pure tone, phrasing, and thoughtful delivery of the music from the Great American Songbook. She has released ten albums and graced stages large and small from New Zealand to New York, Asia, and Europe.

What are your earliest musical memories, and how have they influenced your career?

I was born in England and raised on an abundant diet of musicals and ballets. I do not doubt that my love of song and performance began there. I expect that solidified the idea that music quickly transcended speech and was a way of achieving communication between people. I also studied piano from a very young age, with a few unsuccessful side quests into saxophone and violin. I was immersed in classical music as a starting point, with Tchaikovsky and Chopin being particular favourites when I was a little girl.

My first jazz-related memory is rather sweet. I was taken on a date in my early twenties to a jazz club, Bennetts Lane, in Melbourne. Performing was the iconic drummer Allan Browne’s trio, with bassist Tamara Murphy and pianist Andrea Keller. I’d never seen an instrumental jazz concert before and was utterly captivated. I don’t think I moved or spoke to my date and just sat there and stared with my mouth agape. Of course, I didn’t understand what was going on musically, but the musicians were ‘speaking’ to each other, and I could see that immediately. Their performance astonished me. From that moment on, I was hooked. I couldn’t think about anything else and spent the rest of my twenties at a jazz club every night of the week. That date may not have been the beginning for me and the young man, but it was for me and jazz. For me, instrumental jazz is

still the absolute pinnacle of musical performance. The communication between jazz musicians is a beautiful, magical thing. Listening is what it is all about.

You have relocated to Paris to further your musical career. List some of the challenges that you’ve encountered with the move, and how you have overcome them.

As much as Francophiles wish to believe I moved to Paris for my ‘Amélie moment’, I didn’t! I moved to Europe to have the experience of living on that continent and to be close to England. I wanted to discover how it would affect my musicality and meet jazz musicians from different places. I chose Paris because I knew people there, spoke a little French, and because it is a brilliant central hub for the rest of Europe. Paris is a beautiful city, and the bread is very good!

Making friends, learning a different way of navigating everyday life, with its abundant, timewasting administration was challenging. It would have been trying wherever I relocated, but Paris is an extremely difficult place to move to. But now, I have a network of wise friends and mentors, and I’m curious and very tenacious.

10 10

What are some of your other interests outside of your professional life?

I love to run as it’s both challenging and meditative. I ran my first marathon in 2021 in the Paris Marathon and hope to tackle my second this year, although training and touring are challenging to fit together. I’m exploring how to do this efficiently so I’m confident I’ll get there. I highly recommend running, especially distance running. If more people included sport and cardio in their lives, I think the world would be a better place.

11

What is your current musical project?

I have several at the moment. I have a jazz quintet in Australia, with two basses and two guitars – a lineup which resulted from my album Under Paris Skies, with guitarist James Sherlock and double bassist Ben Hanlon. I also have a project performing British New Wave music which has appeared at the Melbourne Recital Centre, MONA, and The Jazzlab in Melbourne. Like many creative people with artistic notions, I have a wealth of ideas but not enough time to make them all happen!

It’s five o’clock on a Sunday afternoon and you want to chill, listening to some of your favourite musical artists. Who are they and what is it about their music that appeals to you?

I admit I don’t spend all my time listening to jazz music. I have eclectic musical tastes and often latch onto one song and listen to it repeatedly for weeks, which probably drives my neighbours completely mad. I do, however, listen to instrumental jazz like Aaron Parks, Viktor Toth, Rick Margitza, Bill Evans, Grant Green, and Hank Mobley, which I enjoy because I can dip into the colours and rhythms without listening to any lyrics. When I run, I exclusively listen to pop and rock music –Taylor Swift, Hall & Oates, Röyksopp, Mitski, and Supertramp.

The Devil Made Me Do It: The Legend of Dr Faustus

Stephen Gard explores the story and origins of the classic folktale

Bargaining with the Tempter is a trade as old as sin itself. We learn about it in Genesis, and the story is doubtless older. The tariff is a weighty one: knowledge in exchange for damnation. Those unacquainted with their soul, those who doubt they have such a thing, believe they can cheat the Devil. Those who know full well that they possess a God-given immortal spirit, a thing to be kept untainted, and yet pursue this deal – is a scenario rich with drama.

Doctor Johann George Faustus was an historical figure. A resident of Würtemburg, born in 1480, Johann Faustus departed this earth in 1540. The learned Doctor was reputedly a magician, alchemist and astrologer, risky areas of enquiry in an age when sorcerers and heretics were burned at the stake. Little wonder that legends grew up around Doctor Faustus and his esoteric interests.

Shortly after his death appeared Historia & Tale of Doctor Johannes Faustus in which we are told how he did oblige himself unto the Devil and got his well-deserved reward. The work of an anonymous author, the Historia & Tale was less a biography than ‘a highly essential Christian warning and admonition’. The text cited every argument by the spirit of Evil for subverting the reign of God, and had an unintended effect: some found the Satanic case persuasive.

In 1592, Christopher Marlowe, inspired by the Historia & Tale, and no stranger himself to dark dealings, gave the English stage The Tragical History of Dr Faustus (Faustus). More than a little melodramatic, the action included half-a-dozen demons who whirled about wielding flambeaux, scaring the groundlings witless, and doubling boxoffice receipts. Puritan polemicist William Prynne tried to have Faustus banned: he was certain the devils were genuine and Faustus a recruiting ploy for Lucifer.

Fact or fable, the story’s central conflict intrigued several thinkers, not the least of them Johann Wolfgang von Goethe whose lengthy verse drama Faust was published in parts between 1792 and 1832. It remains a classic of German literature. Goethe added a heroine in the character of Gretchen, seduced by Faustus, who pleads with God for the Doctor’s soul, but is betrayed by The Devil.

A legend so torrid appealed to composers of the Romantic era. Schubert’s Gretchen am Spinnrade appeared in 1814. In 1846 came Hector Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust, a choral work on the grand scale. Schumann composed a Faust Overture in 1853, just before the premiere of Listz’s Gretchen aus Faust-Symphonie. Gounod’s five-act opera Faust with a libretto derived from Goethe made its debut at Paris’s Théâtre Lyrique in 1859 and remains a staple of the genre. Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Glinka, Spohr and Busoni: all were inspired by the hubris of Doctor Faust and his nemesis. Few since. Faust’s spiritual dilemma is of small interest in a materialist age.

We cross now to a performance of Gounod’s Faust given in Dublin some years ago. Mephistopheles, having made his fell pact with Doctor Faust, is about to descend to the Underworld through a trapdoor in the stage. But the trapdoor is jammed. No matter how Mephistopheles stamps or jumps on it, the trapdoor will not open.

‘Glory be!’ cries a voice from the audience. ‘Hell’s full!’

Angela Davis - Talented Saxophonist

Angela Davis is a delightfully talented saxophonist who has established herself as a leading figure in the Australian jazz scene. “Davis has a beautifully elegant, honeyed alto tone, reminiscent of Paul Desmond”, (John McBeath, writing in The Australian).

Davis was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, and discovered her love for music at a young age, learning the saxophone when she was just nine years old. During her high school years, Davis was an active member of her school’s jazz band, where she developed her passion for jazz. Completing high school, she toured Australia with The Jazz Ed Big Band and performed with Australian clarinetist and jazz maestro Don Burrows. Davis received a Bachelor of Music with First Class honours in 2006 from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. She also has a Master of Music from the Philadelphia University of the Arts.

“For as long back as I can remember, it has been a dream of mine to be a professional saxophonist,” says Davis. “I fell in love with the sound from the records my parents played – not necessarily jazz–pieces featuring the horn sections of Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago. It was never not an option to play the instrument!”

In 2010, Davis moved to New York and embraced the jazz scene. Her debut album The Art of the Melody, was well-received by critics and audiences alike. The album showcases Davis’ ability to create beautiful melodies that are both complex and accessible. It was officially released at the prestigious New York City venue, The Kitano, a testament to Davis’ talent and appeal. Richard

B. Kamins on the Step Tempest blog commented, “Her sweet tone, her dedication to melody over technical prowess and her interactions with the rhythm section deliver a strong message – Art is in the Melody.”

After receiving the Queensland Brian Boak Outstanding Performer Bursary in 2014, Davis recorded her second album, Lady Luck. The album features a string quartet and some of the top jazz musicians in the industry, such as Dan Tepfer, Linda Oh, and Richie Barshay. The album was shortlisted for three Australian Bell Awards, including Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Best Produced Album, and Best Australian Jazz Composition. This album solidified Davis’ reputation as a leading figure in the Australian jazz scene. Michael Bailey in an All About Jazz review described her tone as “approximating glacial Bombay Sapphire rippled by the photons of some ancient sun. It is a beautifully nostalgic sound that is as relevant and immediate as right now.”

Her third release, Little Did They Know, was nominated for several prestigious awards, including an Aria Award and an AIR Award for Best Jazz Album. The album features Australian jazz legends Sam Anning and Tony Gould and displays Davis’ continued growth as an artist.

Aside from her work as a leader, Davis has also played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Vince Jones, James Morrison, Patti Austin, Linda Oh, Andrea Keller, and Sandy Evans. This has given her the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of the best musicians in the industry. Currently, Davis is on faculty at Monash University,

16

sharing knowledge and experience with the next generation of jazz musicians. She is also endorsed by the world’s largest musical instrument maker, D’Addario, a testament to her reputation and talent.

Her fourth album, Suite for Max, was released on April 1, 2022. It features Stephen Magnusson on guitar, Frank Di Sario on bass, and Patrick Danao on drums. The album was inspired by the birth of her son, immediately before the pandemic hit in 2020. She started writing the album while watching her newborn son develop – another excellent addition to her already impressive discography.

Angela Davis’ unique style and ability to blend contemporary jazz music make her one of the most exciting musicians working in Australia today. Her tone is often likened to Art Pepper, Paul Desmond, or Lee Konitz with whom she studied. Davis continues to push the boundaries of jazz and create music that is both fresh and deeply rooted in tradition.

The Orange Winter Jazz Festival - 2023

Keith Pettigrew on the Winter Wonderland of contemporary jazz, roots, and world music

Some of the most successful music festivals in Australia are held annually in regional towns like Wangaratta, Port Fairy, and Byron Bay. The latest addition to that growing list is the Orange Winter Jazz Festival, with the hugely successful inaugural festival held last year. The festival was staged by SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) and JAM Orange (Just Add Music), with several of the performances MC’d by 2MBS FineJazz presenters.

The 2023 festival is again filled with a program of artists, drawn from all over Australia. This year the program spans the broad church of jazz with leading local musicians performing alongside Australia’s best known and emerging artists from both Orange and throughout the Central West. As well as both contemporary and more traditional jazz, the Festival will encompass a wide range of styles from blues, roots, and even old-timey country. With some forty different groups and individual artists appearing, the program certainly presents incredible value.

The festival boasts some amazing established jazz musicians, including Sandy Evans and the Andrew Robson Quartet, Paul Grabowsky, The Necks, James Valentine, Mister Ott, and the Chris Cody Trio. Of significance is the festival’s support for young emergent jazz musicians including the Tessie Overmyer Trio, Monstress, Chloe Kim, Underwards and the ANU Jazz Orchestra.

Orange sits in the very scenic Central Tablelands, just four hours’ drive from Sydney, three hours from Canberra, and five hours from Newcastle. It has an excellent range of venues from historic churches, classic country style hotels and a superb concert space at the Orange Conservatorium. Wineries, scenery, and history – quite the destination.

New additions to the program will see dinner and show offerings at some of Orange’s favourite dining spots. The opening night on Friday 9 features an ‘African Style Dance Party’ at the rustic Canobolas Dance Hall with Malian legend Moussa Diakite and West African DJ Dachi. The Agrestic Grocer will host the brilliant Kenyan singer Lisa Odour-Nash, whilst the Birdie Noshery will host multi awardwinning vocalist Michelle Nicolle.

The festival is on the Kings Birthday long weekend 9th-11th June. For details, check www.owjf.com.au

Review: A Clockwork Orange and Beyond

Lyndon Pike reviews the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble May 14, Joan Sutherland theatre, Sydney Opera House

The month of May saw arpeggiators, auteurs, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra come together in glorious fashion under the guidance of Richard Tognetti, teaming up with UK musician Will Gregory’s Moog Ensemble for A Clockwork Orange and Beyond.

Equally a tribute to and a reimagining of moments in soundtrack composition, the synthesisers teamed with strings for a symphonic selection of iconic movie soundtrack creations originally written by Wendy Carlos, Vangelis, Johan Sebastian Bach, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, the BBC Radiophonic workshop and more.

For many people, the first introduction to Robert Moog’s iconic electronic keyboard, the Moog synthesiser, was likely to have been the million selling Popcorn by Hot Butter, a cover version of another Moog pioneer and early adapter, Gershon Kingsley. If it wasn’t Popcorn that heralded the popular exposure to the instrument, it was the 1968 album Switched-On Bach, composed entirely on Moog and released by Wendy Carlos, aka Walter Carlos, which sold over a million copies and influenced everybody from Glenn Gould to Georgio Moroder.

For this performance held in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House, the four took centre stage with seven ACO performers on either side. Under Tognetti’s tutelage, the strings began proceedings with the strains of Franz Waxman’s Sinfonietta: I. Lento - Allegro. With a pulsing undertow, the audience were introduced to the washes of the synthesisers along with a sample of dialogue by Harrison Ford’s character Deckard, taken from the film Blade Runner. The Blade Runner main title, written by Vangelis, was a perfect immersion into the marriage of the analogue and the electronic. Bleeps and bass notes coloured by whale song like sustains, accompanied by strings and percussion, drew the crowd in.

By not having scenes from any of the films projected behind them, and with a minimal but effective V-shaped lighting structure being the key visual component, the audience’s attention was directed to the roles of the various musicians on the stage and the communication between them as the focal point of the performance.

20
Images courtesy of ACO 21

Moog Ensemble member Hazel Mills, switching between the Sequential Prophet-6 and vocoder/ synthesiser, played the main melodies, with Will Gregory and Simon Haram performing on wind synths, or wind controllers, which are usually played like a woodwind instrument. Like their other synthesiser counterparts, wind synths can sound like any other instrument and the Ensemble used them to great effect across pieces such as crowd favourites Chariots of Fire main titles, and Hanz Zimmer’s Cornfield Chase, as heard on the soundtrack to Interstellar.

The first half of the show presented the best known pieces, such as the iconic and still remarkably affecting Doctor Who theme, originally created (although uncredited at time of release) by Australian composer Ron Grainer, and coloured by pioneering electronic musician Delia Derbyshire, of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Also heard in the first half were selections from Switched-On Bach (Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G Major) and the aforementioned Chariots of Fire main titles.

The second half of the performance began with two pieces by John Williams written for the 1972 film Images. A further tribute to Wendy Carlos followed and then another Bach composition, taken from the Soviet sci-fi drama Solaris, set the stage for the show’s zenith - a realisation of selections from A Clockwork Orange

For myself, and I imagine most of the audience, hearing iconic compositions such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Second Movement, and Rossini’s William Tell Overture presented with amplified intensity and new tonal and sonic elements, was a pure delight.

This event was indeed unique, and a testament to Richard Tognetti’s vision as Artistic Director of the ACO. The thunderous applause that greeted the players upon the finale was a well-deserved appreciation for a truly original and exhilarating evening of music.

Volunteer Spotlight - Iris Zeng

Four years ago, Iris began volunteering at Fine Music Sydney while studying media and communications at The University of Sydney. She says she has always loved listening to and playing classical music and telling stories, and finds radio an ideal medium for both.

Asked about how her passion for music started, Iris says: “For as long as I can remember, my brother and I had classical music for breakfast. My father grew up during China’s Cultural Revolution. He recalled how hearing Schubert on the radio could make him happy for a week. In Sydney, we would tune into ABC Classic FM every morning. I suppose it’s genetics… or indoctrination!”

“Well, it’s a shame I don’t study music anymore – I’m a journalist. I started playing the flute at eight, joined the school orchestra and did Music 2 for my HSC. I owe it to my flute teacher, Julia Berky, for instilling genuine passion in me, and 2MBS Fine Music Sydney for keeping that alive.”

In addition to presenting, Iris has become involved in other roles with the station. She says: “I am privileged to assist as Digital Content Coordinator alongside Paul Cooke. Together we commission articles from our pool of talented writers for Fine Music Magazine, delving into special anniversaries and programs. This ties in with our new program, Fine Music Notes – the brainchild of James Nightingale, Paul Cooke, and me – to give our listeners a taste of what is coming up in music each month at our station and around Sydney.”

Iris’ musical taste includes a mix of classical music (Fauré & Tchaikovsky), movie themes and soft rock… she loves Richard Marx, too!

When asked about any particularly memorable performances that stay with her forever, Iris says… “I was on stage at the Opera House during my school’s Presentation Day. The audience was clapping, the lights dimmed, then girls on my right and left stood up. I thought, ‘What’s going on?’ When the lights came back on, the choir conductor had stridden across the stage. Suddenly, it dawned on me that I’d mistakenly sat with the Choir. It was too late to escape – the piano had already begun its intro. Over five excruciating minutes, I gaped to a song I did not know, before hundreds of students and parents…”

Outside her Fine Music commitments, Iris says: “I work for a media organisation during the week and come home to a devilish pug called Puganini – she can’t play the violin, but occasionally, when I play the flute, she howls!”

Fine Music Notes airs first Tuesday of the month at 1pm

CD REVIEWS

In The Waves

Born out of a pandemic-inspired reconnection with ocean swimming, these compositions are loosely themed on the physical and philosophical qualities of water as a common thread. From the outset, pianist Steve Barry is a most capable soloist whose qualities lie not so much in anomalous roundabouts, as in his ability to decipher themes and wrest the most intensity from them, engaging a modern jazz sound that combines a good deal of stylistic variation. The stand-out tracks, Lithospheric and First 11 are prime examples. Will Vinson is a nimble soloist when performing on alto and soprano saxophones.

New Wine in an Old Bottle

Thomas McConochie, composer

Mark Papworth, natural horn

Amanda Millar, piano & cello

Move move.com.au

At first hearing I thought Leopold Mozart had been reborn. But wait! When we get to the Sonata for Natural Horn and Cello, it’s not Leopold, it’s his son. He’s back from the grave. In fact, what we have here is a CD of modern works specifically written for the natural horn (think post horn) by Australian composer, Thomas McConochie. And in Mark Papworth we have a true modern-day Joseph Leutgeb, for the natural horn is no easy

His interplay with Barry is about as compelling as one could ask for. The collaborations of Eric Harland involve a virtual and exhaustive who’s who of modern jazz, most prominently with The Charles Lloyd Quartet. A drummer’s drummer, who captures the deep essence of the music in his every beat, Harland, along with the bass playing Thomas Botting, provides the heartbeat that emulsifies and connects the ensemble. This is serious jazz, ably performed by four masters of the genre, and deserves to be considered on those terms.

instrument to handle, yet he handles it very well indeed. The CD contains three horn sonatas and a horn sonatina. Two of the sonatas are accompanied by Amanda Millar at the fortepiano, and the Sonata in D major has her playing the cello. Throughout, it’s a highly professional exercise by all involved and the music is clever and very listenable. My only quibble…. maybe it’s all a little too much like Mozart.

Hope Renewed

This album is a re-interpretation of Nat Bartsch’s solo piano album, Hope, centered around a jazz quartet and incorporating classical musicians and ambient electronics. With improvisation, orchestration, and audio production to bring her musical ideas to life, Bartsch experiments and displays her various musical sides in one place. The result is a personal recording full of emotional and engrossing music, best heard in one sitting. Bartsch retraces her previous journey in all its detail, reconnecting with the themes of Hope, changing, and rethinking them as the journey progresses. However, predictability is not the key here. The quartet’s extensive experience playing together

Wintergarden Fantasias

ABCL0060D

The Evergreen Ensemble styles itself as being ‘where art music and folk music meet’, and this new release realises that ambition. Shane Lestideau is the founder and leader of Evergreen Ensemble, and its violinist and fiddler, and she is accompanied by Donald Nicolson, pianist and music scholar. The music chosen for Wintergarden Fantasies is informed by her research first as National Folk Fellow in 2019 and then as PhD scholar studying historically informed performance practice in ScottishAustralian music. It draws upon the Baillie Collection, music performed by four generations of the Baillie family and brought to Australia in 1912 by Robert ‘Ballantyne’ Baillie, with Lestideau playing a fiddle gifted to her by Ballantyne’s son. comes to the fore and is strikingly evident throughout. They create at times an almost abstract impressionistic feel, with the originals from Hope exquisitely re-painted with extraordinary musicianship and sensitivity. Robbie Melville’s guitar work is outstanding throughout. Nat Bartsch’s pianism on every track is world-class, Maddison Carter excels on drums and cymbals, while Tamara Murphy’s double and electric basses are the solid backbone of all. This album is a beautiful, atmospheric reimagining, conveying renewed spontaneity and improvisatory freedom.

were compiled and arranged by Ballantyne’s father, Robert Baillie, but there is also a virtuoso item by Schubert – The Bee, with its ‘very rapid buzzing triplets’ – and one credited to Paganini who, though suffering deteriorating health, performed in Edinburgh in 1831. Paganini’s influence is also apparent in Robert Baillie’s Fantasia on Scottish Airs, with its double-stopped harmonics which later give way to bagpipe melody accompanied by drone. Entertainingly virtuosic.

At the palace of the Chitoor, in Chittorgarh, the Prince, Ratan-Sen awaits the arrival of the Sultan of the Mogols, Alaouddin. The watchman proclaims the Sultan’s progress through the gates of the city, as the crowds gather, crowds who doubt the goodwill of the Mogol whose army is encamped on the far edge of the plain. Ratan-Sen meets the Sultan, who assures him that his motives are entirely peaceful. Ratan-Sen treats the Sultan to the dancing of his warriors, female slaves and palace women but none please the Sultan, whose curiosity will only be sated by the sight of the famous beauty, Padmâvatî. Ratan-Sen explains that she is his lawful wife and Alaouddin questions if she is as beautiful as her reputation suggests. Padmâvatî appears and after her beauty is revealed, Alaouddin names the price of peace to be the person of the Queen. Ratan-Sen immediately calls for war and the city erupts into chaos as Padmâvatî laments the disaster about to overtake the city. After the battle, a wounded and dying Ratan-Sen returns to Padmâvatî and, after a poignant farewell, she ends her husband’s life and his burial rites begin. As Padmâvatî submits to the flames of the funeral pyre, Alaouddin arrives, in time only to contemplate the scene of despair.

In 14th century Florence, the erotic novellas of the poet Boccaccio cause a stir and the locals are divided into the female fans of his scandalous tales and their jealous husbands. Boccaccio’s excuse for pursuing the ladies is his ‘research’. A plot is hatched by the husbands to chase Boccaccio from the city and have him locked up. Boccaccio has other plans, including one to win the hand of Lambertuccio’s foster daughter, Fiametta, who is the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Tuscany. Fiametta is summoned to the court to marry a royal husband. Fortunately, the royal in question is none other than Pietro, Prince of Palermo, who has been in Florence attempting to emulate Boccaccio’s seductions. Pietro is willing to forgo the marriage in favour of the slightly reformed Boccaccio who has found favour with the Duke. Boccaccio writes a play for the Tuscan Court celebrating their betrothal.

The astrologer introduces the story and invites the audience to solve the puzzle. King Dodon's kingdom is threatened by enemies. The astrologer gives the king a golden cockerel which crows in case of danger. The king promises the astrologer any reward he chooses. The astrologer says he will claim it later. The king’s dream of a beautiful woman is interrupted by the crowing of the cockerel and he goes to war. Dodon’s sons are killed in battle and he finds the beautiful woman of his dreams, the Queen of Shemakha, who accepts his offer of marriage. On the king’s

38

return with his queen, the astrologer claims his reward: the queen. The king refuses and kills the astrologer. The cockerel kills the king by pecking him on the head. The bird and the queen disappear. The astrologer announces that only the cockerel and the queen were real: the king, his sons and entourage were figments of his imagination.

1:48

The story is based on the 1176 battle near the town of Legnano between the army of the Lombard League and the occupying forces of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa. In Milan, Arrigo, a young soldier, having been wounded in a previous battle, is about to return to the army. His friend, Rolando, who is the leader of the troops from Milan, is married to Lida. She and Arrigo were in love but he was thought to have died in battle. She refuses the advances of a German prisoner, Marcovaldo, who has been given some freedoms by Rolando. Rolando brings Arrigo home to see Lida. When Rolando is called away, Arrigo accuses her of being unfaithful. He rushes away wishing only to die in battle.

Rolando and Arrigo seek help from the city of Como in repelling Barbarossa's army. With his troops surrounding Como, Barbarossa demands that Arrigo and Rolando return to Milan to gain its submission. In Milan, Arrigo is inducted into the Knights of Death, warriors who have pledged to fight to the death rather than suffer defeat or imprisonment. Concerned that Arrigo has joined the Knights of Death, Lida writes a note to be conveyed by her maid,

Imelda. Rolando begs Arrigo to take care of his wife and son in the event of his death. Marcovaldo intercepts Lida's note and gives it to Rolando who declares that he will have vengeance on his wife and Arrigo. Not having had a reply from Arrigo, Lida goes to see him in his room in the tower. They declare their love for each other but she says that they must separate for the sake of her husband and child. When Rolando is heard at the door, Lida hides but is discovered by Rolando who storms out, locking the door of the tower. Trumpets sound, signalling the beginning of the battle. Arrigo jumps from the tower to join the army.

Barbarossa's troops are defeated. During victory celebrations in the basilica, the mortally-wounded Arrigo is carried in. He assures Rolando that Lida is innocent. Lida and Rolando are reconciled and Rolando forgives Arrigo who, with his last breath, declares that 'Italy is saved'.

Handel, G. Partenope, HWV27. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Silvio Stampiglia. First performed London, 1730.

PARTENOPE: Rosemary Joshua, sop

EMILIO: Kurt Streit, ten

ARSACE: Lawrence Zazzo, ct

ROSMIRA/EURIMENE: Hilary Summers, cont

ARMINDO: Stephen Wallace, ct Early Opera Company/Christian Curnyn.

Chaconne CHAN 0719(3) 3:10

Queen Partenope must make a choice from among her many suitors: Emilio, the pugnacious Prince of neighbouring Cuma, smooth-talking Arsace, who has abandoned his beloved Rosmira to pursue the queen, and shy Armindo. Rosmira, disguised as a man, introduces herself as Eurimene. Armindo confides in Eurimene that he loves Partenope but that she is in love with Arsace. Eurimene interrupts Partenope and Arsace, declaring ‘himself’ to be yet another of Partenope’s suitors. Emilio offers Partenope marriage and when she refuses, he threatens her. She ask Arsace to be her champion.

In the ensuing battle, Emilio is captured by Arsace. Eurimene claims all credit for Emilio’s capture but when Emilio contradicts ‘his’ claims, Eurimene challenges Arsace to a duel to prove his honour. Eurimene tells Partenope that he challenged Arsace not for himself but on behalf of a woman, Rosmira, whom Arsace had promised to marry and then abandoned. When Arsace admits the allegation is true, Partenope rejects him. The contestants are given their weapons for the duel, when Arsace suddenly demands that he and Eurimene must fight bare-chested. Faced with the dilemma, Eurimene reveals ‘his’ true identity. The lovers change partners. Partenope takes Armindo and Rosmira and Arsace are reunited. Porpora, N. Alto giove, from Polifemo (1735).
