This month marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Victoria de los Angeles, one of the most celebrated sopranos of the 20th century. Equally distinguished as an opera singer and recitalist, she is probably best known for one of the most spectacular hattricks in operatic history: making her debuts at Covent Garden as Mimi, at La Scala in the title-role of Ariadne auf Naxos at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and as Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, all in the same season. Angela Cockburn’s program on November 1 features some of her most memorable recordings. We also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Australian multi-talented composer and multiinstrumentalist, Don Banks, who trained on piano, saxophone, violin and trombone. The son of a jazz musician, he grew up in Melbourne, gaining a diploma in composition at the University Conservatorium of Music, before moving to England in 1950. His career spanned classical and jazz composition, and was at the cutting edge of combining traditional acoustic instruments with electronics. He wrote several atmospheric scores for thrillers and horror films, and formed a creative partnership with Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth. James Nightingale celebrates the legacy of this musical trailblazer. Very much alive is Simone Waddell, one of Australia’s top contemporary jazz artists performing jazz, soul, and funk-infused with groove. The first Australian to win a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston USA, she has continued her career internationally in Asia, Europe, and Australia, performing at countless top venues, both solo and with world-class musicians. Remembrance Day Gerald Holderlooks at how the sombre day is observed around the world

The red poppy, which was one of the first flowers to appear in spring on the battlefields of France and Belgium, is sold on and before Remembrance Day. In 1915, a Canadian doctor and poet, John McCrae, wrote of this flower (In Flanders Fields) as he worked on the battlefields attending the wounded. Soldiers said the colour came from the blood of the fallen. Wreaths of red poppies are frequently displayed on memorials on Remembrance Day, and people wear red poppies.

In World War I, more than 20 million people were killed. In World War II, more than 70 million people perished. In 1919, a South African politician, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, suggested that a period of silence be observed on the anniversary of Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, and this was agreed to by King George V. In the UK, since the conclusion of WWII, the second Sunday in November has been marked as Remembrance Sunday. Every year, two minutes of silence are observed throughout the country at church services and ceremonial gatherings. In Australia, Governor-General Sir William Deane renamed November 11 as Remembrance Day (previously Armistice Day) to continue to reflect upon and to honour the fallen. In the US, President Wilson declared November 11 Remembrance Day, and in 1954 President Eisenhower renamed it Veterans’ Day. Remembrance Day is observed throughout the British Commonwealth and many other countries including France, Belgium, Serbia, Bulgaria, and the US.

Many composers died during WWI. They include William Denis Browne (1915), George Butterworth (1916), Enriques Granados (1916, his ship was torpedoed), Frederick Kelly (1916) and Cecil Coles (1918). The tragedy of wars stimulated composers such as Benjamin Britten (War Requiem), Shostakovich (Symphony no 7, Leningrad) and songs by George Butterworth. Olivier Messiaen composed the Quartet for the End of Time in 1943 while imprisoned in Stalag VIII-A in Silesia. Several composers, including Gideon Klein, died in the Holocaust. Appropriate music reflects the sombre tragedies of wars and allows reflection. Composers wrote funeral marches, arguably the most notable being the second movements of the 3rd and 7th Beethoven symphonies, op 55 in E flat and op 92 in A major. They are marked Marcia funebre, Adagio assai and Allegretto, respectively. Penderecki’s lament, Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, is evocative of the disaster of the time, and for the thousands of victims whose lives were ruined.

In Germany, a People’s Day of Mourning, Volkstrauertag, (on 19 November in 2023) is held to remember those who perished in wars; Japan first had a National Memorial Service for the Dead on May 2, 1952, but this is now held every 15 August the anniversary of the day Hiroshima was destroyed by an atom bomb.

The bugle call, The Last Post, is believed to have originated as part of a British Army ceremony in the 17th century. In the evenings, a duty officer had to check the army unit’s position by making sure that the sentry posts were manned, and sending off-duty soldiers to their billets. The first post, bugle call, and a drum roll were sounded when he started, and another bugle call was played as the process was completed. This was the last post, signifying the end of the day’s activities. Today it is sounded at military funerals and in commemorative services like those of ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. In Europe there is a moving ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, where it is sounded every night at 20:00. The Menin Gate is a war memorial dedicated to British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of WWI and whose graves are unknown. Nearly 55,000 names of soldiers are engraved on the panels of the memorial.

Don Banks: remembered at 100 James Nightingale celebrates the legacy of a trailblazer

These three strands of musical investigation are easy to identify if one studies Banks’ music. Amongst his most popular works is the Prologue, Night Piece and Blues for Two for clarinet and piano, a set of pieces for young clarinettists that introduces modern musical concepts in the first two pieces before exploding into a bluesy, joyful drama. Interplay between the two instruments is rewarding to explore for the players.

Born in October 1923, Don Banks grew up in a family surrounded by musical instruments and jazz. His father played in bands with jazz legends Roger and Graeme Bell, the same bands that he would himself play in as he grew up. This beginning to his musical education established the pattern of curiosity and experimentation that would be central to his work. The Second World War saw him serve in the Medical Corps but allowed enough time for him to take private tuition in composition. Following the war, he studied in Melbourne with Dorian Le Gallienne, but it was his studies in Europe with prominent figures in the avant-garde of music, including Matyas Seiber, Milton Babbitt, Luigi Dallapiccola and Luigi Nono, that set the tone of much of his fully composed works.

At the other end of the spectrum is Banks’ String Quartet, a work written in 1975 and based on strict rules of serial composition. This piece is an homage to two figures from Banks’ formative years in Europe: Luigi Dallapicolla, who died in 1975, and Roberto Gerhard, who passed in 1970. This work is difficult and intricate for the players and the audience, the serialism governing not just note choices but also rhythmic values, at least to some degree. This piece is a challenge and very much of its time.

Alongside his investigation of the latest trends in music composition, Banks was involved in electronic music, and part of his legacy was his work helping to establish electronic music studios at the Canberra School of Music and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the 1970s.

Bringing together several streams of Banks’ work is his orchestral piece, Trilogy. Composed in 1977, the title refers to the three movements of the work which are linked by thematic material. Throughout the work, the balance of solo sections against the power of the orchestral tutti is a notable feature. The opening movement is characterised by dark sounds of timpani and piano, while the second is a strong contrast with the tinkling of vibraphone, celeste and harp being most prominent. The last movement swings between solos, aleatoric sections and tutti chords, which alternate until broken by a jazz-like finale in which the clarinet is prominent.

Much of Banks’ music is not yet recorded, and this is especially the case for his electronic works – music that pre-dates computer technologies, a fact that no doubt makes it even more difficult to care for. The spirit of experimentation and improvisation that underlies the ethos of Banks’ electronic work is also difficult to convey in audio recording, or to replicate in modern performance.

Banks’ legacy is strongest in the lineage of Australian composers who cite his influence upon their music making. Banks died very young in 1980, just a few weeks before his 57th birthday and less than ten years after his return from Europe. His impact on the scene, through his stewardship of the Australia Council Music Board, is remembered in the music award that bears his name – the richest musical award offered annually in Australia.

“What I like about it compared to a double bass,” says Chris, “is that Sam has to breathe, so we’re both breathing into our instruments, we can sync up and our tones can match up. No matter how good a double bass is, it’s not a breath-related instrument. The sousaphone is like a breath double bass.”

Beneath a sweeping vaulted ceiling on a spring Sydney night, our 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Weatherley Jazz Scholar, Chris O’Dea, and his tenor saxophone, open a live performance on a softly lit stage. Before introducing his band, Oh Dear It’s O’Dea, at Johnston Street Jazz, he serenades his keen audience with his own solo piece, ADHD Saxophone.

A silly walk in the park And we’re off. Where’s My Hat took me to the abstract chic and wit of Holly partying in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Outlaws evoked the county cowboys roaming the Arizona plains. Chris describes his music as ‘Sonny Collins meets Monty Python’, because there’s an element of silliness and cheekiness throughout. “We’ve spent so much time doing gigs on the street we can go off using someone’s idea and take it for a walk in the park and see where it can end up. That’s just us.”

“It’s pure improvisation, nothing pre-planned. It’s just giving you guys a snapshot of what’s in my head.” His great grandfather played tenor sax in dance bands in high-society Sydney clubs back in the day, including the Trocadero and others. “He was an accountant by day, jazz player by night.” And Chris is playing his sax, exploring his improv alleys by night, and the scene is set for what’s to come.

There’s no genre here; deep south blues to Cuban magic. “It ranges from country to cumbia and everything in between... we use our background in jazz and try to look for some extended improvisation... we all have this wealth of knowledge of songs in our heads that we can draw upon at any time.”

Enter Sam Golding entwined in his gargantuan spiral sousaphone and Abby Constable, who takes to her earthly drums. The trio have often played in street markets together, and with James Greening on trombone, recently worked on Chris’s first album, soon to be released. Mind-reading Counting 1, 2, 3, and the band becomes one. No set playlists, and although there was sheet music on a couple of stands, it was more like a prop as the music came from somewhere else, from some cosmic thread.

Chris has created a brand-new batch of compositions as part of his Weatherley Scholarship, which was generously provided by the passionate jazz lover and presenter Ken Weatherley. The composition’s from Chris’s recently recorded new album. “Once it’s mixed it’ll be good to go,” he said. “The scholarship enabled me to get the band together, and in terms of my confidence as a writer, it’s definitely been good for me.”

“We were all tuned in,” reflects Chris. “We’ve spent a lot of time playing together. We’ve perfected the mind-reading.” And breath-syncing. The crustaceous sousaphone with the big blowsy horn is more typically found in a New Orleans jazz band, so it’s unique to be in a jazz trio.

And the likely name of the album? Does not Contain Jazz. That’s so cheeky!

So, who’s Chris? Chris O’Dea grew up in a musical family learning how to play his great-grandfather’s saxophone. Since age 15, he has been performing professionally both nationally and internationally with a diverse array of jazz ensembles including Scotch and Soda Circus, The Milk Crate Bandits, and Swing Rocket, with whom he performed at the Havana Jazz Festival in 2017. Chris’ compositions have been featured on several recordings including Kate Wadey’s latest album Forever Like This (2022), the Arthur Washington Sexytet’s self-titled album (2016), the soundtrack of Sea Change (2019) and the Australian short Film Figure 8 by Michael Bradley (2022). The album His aim for this project has been to write and record an album of compositions, combining group improvisations in styles ranging from traditional jazz to various South American music styles, such as Son, Bolero and Choro. These combine with different rhythms and grooves from traditional music styles from Cuba, the Balkans, and Spain. The underpinning format is an open ‘Sonny Rollins Trio’ format, with no chordal instrument. This allows more freedom for the front-line instruments to play with the tonality of chords, allowing more freedom in improvisation. Listen out for its release on FineJazz on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney.

The ‘degenerate music’ of war Iris Zeng looks at exiled German composers from the Nazi era

When we think of wartime music, popular songs such as The White Cliffs of Dover and Do your balls (ears in the sanitised version) hang low? come to mind. Between WWI and WWII, patriotic anthems, classical music, swing, and jazz, sounded in the music halls, muddy trenches, and later, radio broadcasts. Like war poems, music evoked various sensibilities; some served to lift spirits and boost morale, as in Elgar’s setting of Rudyard Kipling’s The Fringes of the Fleet, while others reflected the tragedy of war or commemorated the fallen, such as Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony No.7. During WWII, under the Nazi regime, music was strictly controlled and censored. The Nazi government was determined to promote Germanic culture and music, and spread propaganda messages via radio. Only certain ‘proper’ German and Austrian classical composers were allowed – the three grand masters being Beethoven, Wagner, and Bruckner – while Entartete Musik (‘degenerate music’) was heavily suppressed. Atonal music, jazz, which was deemed ‘Negroid’, and works by Jewish composers like Felix Mendelssohn and Arnold Schoenberg were banned. Our Sunday Special program German music between the wars, features music by composers who lived and worked in Germany and Austria between World War I and World War II. Many of these composers were soldiers in the first world war; some went into exile, including Erich Korngold, Paul Hindemith, and Kurt Weill.

Labelled an ‘atonal noisemaker’ by Goebbels, Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) was one of many composers who fled the Third Reich due to both musical and racial persecution, as his wife was part Jewish. By 1937, Hindemith’s music was virtually banned in Hitler’s Germany, during which time he wrote one of his most powerful orchestral scores: Symphonic Dances, whose Scherzo movement mirrors mechanized warfare with its contrapuntal energy. Hindemith led the Gebrauchsmusik (‘utility music’) movement, writing scores that had a social or political purpose, and intended for the amateur player rather than virtuoso. Another German composer influenced by Hindemith and Gebrauchsmusik was Kurt Weill (1900-1950). Between the wars, the Berlin cabaret and theatre scene was famed for its extravagance and decadence. Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera) was a satirical play about the London underworld in the 1920s, written by Bertolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill. Based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, it follows notorious criminal and womanizer Macheath (Mack the Knife), who marries Polly Peachum. Displeased, her father plots to hang Mack. The music draws from jazz and German dance music. Famous songs from this piece of music theatre included the Ballad of Mack the Knife, which features in Sunday’s program. Mack the Knife became a hit all around the world, and has been covered by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Sting, amongst others, transcending the horrors of war. Esperanza Spalding: A Journey of Jazz Talent by Louise Levy

The celebrated bassist, vocalist, and composer, Esperanza Spalding, is leaving an indelible mark on the world of contemporary jazz music. Her accolades include five Grammy Awards, A Boston Music Award, a Soul Train Music Award, and two honorary doctorates.

Born in October 1984 in Portland, Oregon, Spalding exhibited an extraordinary musical talent from a remarkably early age. Her musical odyssey was inspired by a performance by the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Her mother noted her musical skills when Spalding was able to reproduce Beethoven by ear on the family’s piano as a child. By age five, she had taught herself the violin, her rapid progress leading to her appointment as concertmaster violinist for the Chamber Music Society of Oregon at the age of 15. However, her musical journey took an unexpected turn when, in the same year, she received a scholarship to a performing arts high school and discovered the acoustic double bass. This instrument resonated deeply with her, marking a pivotal moment in her musical development.

In 2006, she took the significant step in her career of releasing her debut solo album, Junjo, on the Ayva label. Two years later, her album Esperanza was released on Heads Up Records, proving to be a critical and commercial triumph, reaching the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.

Spalding left high school at 16 to become the youngest bass player at Portland State University, earning her B.A. there. During this period, she began performing locally and studying under the mentorship of esteemed Portland jazz artists, including Ron Steen, Thara Memory, and Darrell Grant.

Continuing her musical journey, Spalding unveiled Radio Music Society in 2012, conceived as a companion piece to Chamber Music Society. This album highlighted her ability to collaborate with a diverse array of musicians and earned her a second Grammy Award, this time for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Her thirst for education eventually led her to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she graduated in 2005. She earned an appointment as an instructor at Berklee, becoming the youngest faculty member at the institution at 20. This marked the beginning of her dual career as both a performer and an educator.

Her subsequent albums, including Emily’s D+Evolution (2016), Twelve Little Spells (2019), and Songwrights Apothecary Lab (2021), continued to display her versatility and willingness to explore new sonic territories.

Spalding’s breakthrough moment arrived in 2010 when she received the prestigious Grammy Award for Best New Artist. This accolade catapulted her work into the spotlight and elevated her third album, Chamber Music Society, into the Billboard Top 40. This album exemplified her unique blend of contemporary modern jazz, R&B, and Brazilian musical traditions, featuring collaborations with notable artists such as Milton Nascimento and Gretchen Parlato.

In addition to her studio albums, Spalding has released captivating live recordings, such as Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival (2022), and Alive at the Village Vanguard (2023). These performances showcase her remarkable prowess in both intimate and collaborative settings.

As a performer, Spalding quickly gained recognition in the jazz world. Her talent and versatility allowed her to collaborate with a diverse array of artists, including Joe Lovano, Patti Austin, Michel Camilo, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, and many more.

Esperanza Spalding’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Her pioneering work continues to inspire and redefine the possibilities within the realm of jazz and beyond, solidifying her place as an icon of contemporary music.

High Five: Simone Waddell Barry O’Sullivan talks to Vocalist Simone Waddell

Simone Waddell is one of Australia’s top contemporary jazz artists performing jazz, soul, and funk-infused with groove. She was the first Australian to win a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston USA and after completing her music degree, she has continued her career internationally in Asia, Europe, and Australia, performing at countless top venues, both solo and with world-class musicians. What are your current musical projects? I am thrilled with my fifth studio album The Art of Collaboration, which features sixty of Australia’s best jazz musicians. They include James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel, and Paul Grabowsky, just to name a few. It was the highest-selling Australian Jazz Album of 2022, and I am so proud of all the incredible offerings from everyone involved. It also includes six tracks of my original songwriting, plus five iconic Australian songs reimagined into the contemporary jazz idiom. The album entered four Grammy Awards categories and was nominated for an ARIA award. My next contemporary jazz album is in the pipeline and features some magnificent arrangements of songs from the Great American Songbook. I have a Billie Holiday show that I perform under the musical direction of Rodric White and a brand-new show, Great Ladies of Jazz that I will be performing throughout 2024 on the Bravo Cruise of Performing Arts to Noumea and the South Pacific, along with other artists such as Marina Prior and Todd McKenney.

When did singing jazz music first enter your life and who were some of those artists that influenced your style? I have been in love with music from my earliest memory. To me, the piano was the most glorious instrument, and I spent hours in my early years playing and singing. It never ceases to amaze me that now I am paid to do what I did back then for fun without an audience. Soul music came into my life in my teenage years. I started listening to artists like Oleta Adams, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, and Sade. I was enamoured with the Australian artists Tina Arena and Kate Ceberano. I met Kerrie Biddell at a vocal workshop in 1992 when I was beginning to discover more jazz music. I sang for Kerrie then and was braced for heavy criticism as she was known for her ‘direct’ communication, but instead, she was very complimentary. I was only sixteen years old and very relieved. Kerrie remained my mentor until the day I was by her side in September 2014 in ICU when she passed. My master’s degree and thesis are dedicated to her artistic contribution.

Life as a musician is full of challenges. What are some that may have confronted you so far, and how have you overcome them? The biggest challenge I have faced in my musical life is feeling very forced at times to override my intuition and to acquiesce to people who are overly aggressive or controlling. I overcame this welltrodden path by making a firm decision to follow my inner guidance no matter what. It comes at a price, yet the alternative is far more costly!

When at Berklee College in Boston in the late 90s, I discovered the jazz vocalist Diane Reeves and listened to much of her work. There, I also received instruction from Maggie Scott, a no-nonsense jazz pianist, vocalist, and voice coach who focussed purely on jazz repertoire and stretched me vocally week in and week out. I’m thankful to this day for those years.

I am not challenged by hard work, long hours, gruelling travel, or discipline, although I sometimes feel challenged by doing it all myself. Yet, the process, which is not for the faint-hearted, develops an unbelievable tenacity that cannot be achieved in any other way. What are some of your other interests outside of your musical career? I am passionate about health and fitness, spiritual growth, and social justice. Also, I am exploring and studying music as a modality for trauma recovery, healing, and wholeness. I play indoor netball every week as well! You are home alone on a Sunday night. What music would you choose to listen to and why? I am at home with so many genres. The music can be melancholic, or uplifting. Gospel music has been a mainstay since birth, so Cece Winans could easily be on the playlist. I am never far from my roots in artists like Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Etta James, and Sting. As much as I love instrumental music, I truly love listening to great singers!

Volunteer Spotlight Liam Collins Contemporary Music Collective presenter Liam Collins talks with Laurie Smith How did you become a volunteer? In 1989, a friend told me about a classical guitarist doing a live recording at a ‘little radio station’ in Crows Nest. It turned out to be an evening of flute and piano in the intimate setting of the old Studio C. After the performance, we chatted with the receptionist, Eva Low, about volunteering. My friend wanted to record live gigs, while I had long-held notions of becoming a DJ. Eva was keen for us to deliver The Guide, but I persisted and met Simon Hayman of the (then) Alternative Music Collective, now Contemporary Music Collective (CMC). The rest, as the cliché goes, is history. Where does your love of music come from? Do you play music? My love of music has diverse sources: my parents, peers, and luck. Mum had a penchant for eastern European folk choirs, ‘60s rock’n’roll, and powerful female singers of the ‘70s and ‘80s. She played the recorder throughout her life. Dad was a Navy bandsman (clarinet and violin), with a soft spot for the crooners and unconventional artists ranging from Hurricane Smith to Mandingo. I’ve discovered many favourite albums by chance. Browsing record stores worldwide, waking up in front of late-night TV, or hearing music drifting from an open window. As a drummer, I was a passable singer (perhaps vice versa). I am now learning to make my own music to complement my mixing of others’ work.

What do you enjoy about your involvement with the station? My program started as a midnight shift. I would do the show, head home, grab some sleep before work, rinse/ repeat fortnightly. Over time, I have enjoyed stepping into the ‘daytime life’ of the station, serving on the Board and Technical Committee. Genres may differ across the Station, but we all want to share our music and its stories with a wider audience. The CMC has been a part of the Station since its earliest days. A gathering of music-lovers and musicians presenting styles of music not generally heard in Sydney. The CMC’s emphasis is always on the alternative – the avant-garde, experimental and ‘outsider’, plus reggae, and a generous dash of blues and jazz. Flavours shared with many classically trained musicians, who enjoy playing and listening to these styles. 2MBS and the CMC have given musicians and music (local and international) an opportunity to be heard live-in-studio and as part of our regular lineup.

What are your music favourites? To quote Duke Ellington: “There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind... the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds...” Favourite live music moments include Hunters & Collectors at the Venue (Dee Why), Ray Charles and B.B. King in Sydney, and Regurgitator and Audio Active in Tokyo. This week, I’ve been listening to Her Space Holiday, Dub Syndicate, Bootsy Collins, and exploring the A Strangely Isolated Place record label.

Do you have time for other interests outside Fine Music? Beyond Fine Music, I’ve dedicated the past fifteen years to the North Sydney Bowling Club.

Ben Winkelman OA2 Records

Pianist Ben Winkelman’s sixth album as a leader features nine original compositions, with four played by the pianist’s trio and five with the addition of jazz heavyweights Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Matt Penman (bass) and Obed Calvaire (drums) The album draws inspiration from his anticipation of becoming a father and the feeling of crises and isolation at the start of the pandemic while living in New York. Winkelman’s compositions draw on diverse interests, with an emphasis on rhythmic exploration, some strong melodic lines and group interplay. The music flows extremely well, and there is frequently a swing to it on a range of moods and stylistic influences. The quartet bookends the album with three at the beginning and two at the end, with the four

trio tunes grouped in the middle, creating an impressive set of improvised music. My favourite pieces, Wandering, Isolation, Heartbeat and Fort Tilden highlight the melodic skills of the musicians whilst still exhibiting their keen improvisational abilities. All hold sway throughout the recording, which is of an extremely high standard sonically. However, there are pressurised rhythmic accentuations presenting as well, with sharp unisons and some muscular drumming at times. Ultimately, it all hangs together nicely and cohesively, demonstrating the stylish contemporary art of the ensemble.

I had the good fortune to attend a live multimedia presentation of Life on Land’s Edge at the Newcastle Music Festival earlier this year – but while the visual component was impressive, the musical content was well able to stand alone. The Bowerbird Collective is Simone Slattery, violinist (and occasional vocalist and composer) and Anthony Albrecht, cellist, and between them they have curated this album, in the process cocommissioning, with BirdLife Australia, contributions from a number of Australian composers. Life on Land’s Edge is subtitled ‘an ode to migratory shorebirds’ and is dedicated to the millions

of birds which traverse the thousands of kilometres of the East-Asian-Australasian Flyway. Compositions by Corrina Bonshek (Far Eastern Curlew Lament) and Anne Cawrse (the flitting and dancing of the Ruddy Turnstone) focus in on a particular species. Chris Williams’ (Codex) on the flight of birds looks at the mechanics of motion of migratory flight. Philip Glass’s Opening initially jarred, until I realised that its shifting minimalist polyrhythms perfectly captured the vast distances the shorebirds travel. The liner notes are very informative.

This debut album, a result of the ABC Jazz Fresh Start Commission, is a unique combination of the musical personalities and sounds of its participants Zela Margossian (piano), Jeremy Rose (saxophones and clarinet), Hilary Geddes (guitar), Bobby Singh (tabla), and on selected tracks Adam Yilmaz (djembe, frame drum and daf). Throughout, composers Rose and Margossian weave cultural Armenian influences and rhythmic energy into music bathed in contemplative expression, inhabiting a space where the instrumentalists contribute beautifully to the whole, contrasting the ancient and the modern. The tracks, Daughter of the Seas and Dance of Nar stand out as perfect examples around which everything else

revolves and gravitates musically, both compositionally and performance-wise, speaking in hybrid idioms made of folk and jazz elements. These are glorious achievements. Heaven and Earth brings the legend of Armenian deity Vahagn to life, enhanced with the deep resonance of Rose’s bass clarinet and Margossian’s piano riff, grounding the piece from its celestial dimension with the help of the remaining members of the rhythm section. Visions of Nar’s new album has moments of transcendent beauty, showcasing remarkable interplay, shimmering with crystalline prose and profound intimacy, offering listeners a truly memorable sonic journey. Shocked, the Countess dies in terror. Lisa arrives and witnesses the scene, accusing Herman of loving the cards more than her. The Countess’ ghost appears to Herman, gives him the formula and commands him to marry Lisa. Lisa and Hermann are reconciled but, believing his obsession with gambling is destructive, she kills herself. Herman challenges Yeletsky to play cards and uses the formula. When his third card is revealed, it is the Queen of Spades which changes into the ghost of the Countess. Completely deranged, he stabs himself.

Prince Vsevolod is killed in the battle. Kuterma brings the Tartars to the edge of the invisible city. Even though Kuterma confesses that he has falsely accused her of betraying the city, Fevroniya takes pity on him, but he goes mad and drags her off into the forest. The Tartars also flee in terror. The bird of paradise forecasts the death of Fevroniya. The ghost of Vsevolod appears and the two walk into the invisible city, which is now paradise, where the spirits of the dead of Kitezh finish the wedding hymn interrupted by the Tartars. Returning from the Trojan war, Helena and her husband Menelaus are shipwrecked on the shore of Eygpt by the sorceress Aithra, who prevents Menelaus from killing his faithless wife by sending him in pursuit of phantoms so that he believes he has killed Helena and Paris. Aithra tells him that the real Helena was never in Troy, but has been in a deep sleep in Egypt for the past ten years. Helena has Aithra transport her and Menelaus to a remote spot where she rejoices in their reunion, while he

still believes he has killed her and that she is a phantom. They are visited by a desert chief, Altair, and his son Da-Ud who both fall in love with Helena. Menelaus is escorted on a hunt by Da-Ud who reminds him of Paris, so Menelaus kills him in a jealous rage. Aithra has inadvertently given Helena an antidote to the forgetfulness potion, but Helena refuses to give it back, as only the truth will save her marriage. She gives the potion to Menelaus.
