Barry O’Sullivan attends a celebration of live music
One of Fine Music Sydney’s main goals is ‘to promote Australian musicians and composers, with a particular focus on the young’, and this month Maureen Chaffey, Fine Music Sydney’s Young Virtuoso Award Co-ordinator, invited the winners and finalists from the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod to share their thoughts with Fine Music Magazine readers. Details of the YVA finalists can be found on our website, and the live YVA broadcast can be heard on Sunday 9 October from 2-5pm.
The idea of a film score performed live against a movie backdrop isn’t new – I recall Philip Glass and the Kronos Quartet performing his score to the silent movie Dracula in London over 20 years ago –but a live fusion of improvisational free jazz and experimental noise set to an Australian film certainly is. Hear My Eyes is a production company which engages both music and cinema lovers in a series of events marrying an all-new live score played alongside iconic films. The most recent pairing set Andrew Dominik’s 2000 film Chopper with a quartet of seasoned musicians including the film’s original score composer, Mick Harvey. Lyndon Pike was at the City Recital Hall to review the exciting performance.

Emma Pask Dream of Life
Barry O’Sullivan reviews Emma’s Album Launch at the Blue Mountains Theatre, Springwood, 19 August 2022
Launching her newest recording, Dream of Life, at the Blue Mountains Theatre and opening with that classic song from Ry Cooder, jazz chanteuse Emma Pask ably displayed from the outset that she was far from Smack Dab in the Middle. In the company of an excellent ensemble with whom she generously shared the stage, Ms Pask delivered an album of popular favourites in her trademark style from the Great American Songbook plus a few less frequently heard compositions from Adele, Carmen McCrea, and Lennon and McCartney. By recasting the songs Here, There and Everywhere, Rumour Has It, and Dream of Life, Pask has shown she is a shrewd judge of often overlooked compositions in the jazz idiom.
A relaxed, funny, and charismatic occupant of the beam of the spotlight, Emma Pask delivered the songs that have been the soundtrack to her life with all the eloquent commitment she knows. Her breakneck, ducking and diving fluency of line at up-tempo on the Latin songs Cai Dentro (sung in Portuguese) and the extremely difficult Os Grilos (Crickets Sing for Ana Maria) were performance highlights. Alternatively, these renditions were not to be outshone by her heartfelt and affecting interpretations of Irving Berlin’s They say it’s Wonderful and A.C. Jobim’s If You Never Come to Me. Those renditions allowed this most effortlessly rhythmic and intuitively musical Australian jazz singer more than a usual willingness to reveal what she is

with another jazz artist, Barbara Morrison, was recalled on her version of that dearly departed star staccato classic, Don’t Touch Me, which veered melodically across the width of the singer’s range and featured a stunning final top note. Another highlight and the closer to an evening’s performance by a consummate professional.

Derek Parker looks at the evolution of the BBC on its 100th Anniversary
Founded on 18 October 1922, the speed at which the BBC started broadcasting classical music from its first tiny studio on Savoy Hill, overlooking the Thames and next to the Savoy Hotel, is really surprising.
From the very early days piano music was played, and vocalists climbed the stairs to perform in front of the large box microphone, no doubt somewhat intimidated by the message on the wall opposite them, which declared in Gothic script, ‘Cough, and you will deafen millions’. Unsurprisingly, there was dance music more than anything else – it was easy to run a line to the hotel. The duty announcer would close the studio promptly at 10.30, hurriedly change into evening dress and slip into the ballroom to announce from the microphone hung from a lampshade the numbers to be played by the famous Orpheans or the Savoy Havana Band.
John Reith, the famous first Director of the BBC and a strict Scottish Presbyterian, tolerated but disapproved of dance music, especially the jazz influences of visiting American musicians. If there must be music, it should be classical. One alternative to the miniscule studio was outside broadcasting: as early as January 1923, The Magic Flute was relayed from the Royal Opera House. When a larger studio became available, members of the British National Opera and the Carl Rosa companies performed before much improved microphones: the first studio performance of an opera was in 1925, that of Carmen
After the appointment of a ‘music adviser’, there was rapid progress. Percy Pitt was appointed Director of Music, and invited Elgar, Richard Strauss, and Siegfried Wagner to conduct ad hoc orchestras, from which in 1930 a selection of musicians was chosen to form the BBC Symphony Orchestra
with Dr Adrian Boult as its first music director. An admired conductor with a reputation for reliability, he organised regular performances of a wide-ranging repertoire, and over the following years invited a selection of contemporary composers to conduct their own works – among them Richard Strauss, Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and George Gershwin, who performed the recently composed Rhapsody in blue
Then, of course, came the Proms. Promenade concerts were not a new idea; the immediate predecessor of the BBC Proms was a series which started at the Queen’s Hall in 1896. In 1927 the BBC took it over, together with its conductor Sir Henry Wood. Conveniently, the new Broadcasting House opened next door in 1932, and the rest, as they say, is history – the Proms have introduced millions of listeners to classical music. Their only rival was the BBC’s introduction in 1943 of the Third Programme, a radio station devoted exclusively to the dissemination of the arts.
The Third Programme was thoroughly and enthusiastically supported by Clement Attlee’s post-war Labour government, but was controversial from the start, accused of elitism and ‘socialism’. By far the most important musical phenomenon in the European music world, it emphasised the work of contemporary composers, commissioning and broadcasting many now famous works. It was killed off in 1967, ironically by a Labour government, becoming the catch-all station Radio Three. The Third Programme remains arguably the best thing that ever happened to European classical music. But perhaps one could also say that of the BBC itself.

Piano Finals
What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
To diversify my education, I’ve been overseas to masterclasses and summer schools to gain input from as many different maestros as possible. At one point I was overwhelmed with external ideas and opinions and succumbed to overly academic playing to do everything right. Margaret Hair, my teacher, reminded me not to forget my own voice: “Don’t lose yourself!” It’s good advice that I happily share.
How do you manage performance anxiety? I co-exist with it. It’s an inevitable part of performance and I continue to perform the best I can around it. If things don’t go according to plan and I have a memory lapse for example, I won’t punish myself for it. This prevents fear and pressure from building into my next performance.
Have you ever tried playing a different instrument? I used to play the oboe until mid high school, and that orchestral experience helped develop my ear and inform my piano playing. I also learned the dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) for a while. I wasn’t particularly good at it – I can’t flutter my tongue –but it’s always a delight to explore my cultural roots!
2MBS Fine Music Sydney enjoys a lasting partnership with the Sydney Eisteddfod and is proud to provide opportunities to promote emerging artists. Maureen Chaffey spoke with winners and finalists from the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod and invited them to share their thoughts with Fine Music Magazine readers. Winnie Su, Winner, 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Piano Scholarship (17-26 years) Photo by K.P. AbhisekWhat is your first favourite piece? Notturno by Respighi. At nine I played this piece in the Showcase of Next Generation Australian pianists and later for the Nutcracker Competition in Moscow. This piece is very lyrical and expressive.
My current favourite piece is Carl Vine Sonata No 1, and I was fortunate to have the experience of being personally guided by the composer. I’ve performed this piece at Carnegie Hall in New York and in the Vienna Music Hall. I love its dramatic feeling and intensity.
Support from family is important for a developing artist. What do you say?
My family started my music journey when I young with my great and best teacher Dr Paul RickardFord. They have selflessly supported my music education financially, and steadfastly supported me spiritually. My family has always believed in me. They encourage me when I have setbacks and accompany me to lessons and when I travel. Without their support, I would not be where I am today. I am truly blessed to have them by my side.
Joshua Zhi, Winner, 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod Kawai Piano Scholarship (11-16 years)Inaugural Award Most Promising Young String Player
The Sydney String Centre and the creation of the Award
The Sydney String Centre partnered with Sydney Eisteddfod to create this award to lend a suitable instrument for two years as well as any other appropriate equipment to aid musical practice.
Douglas Glanville is Managing Director of the Sydney String Centre. “Our family-owned business in Chatswood NSW makes and sells violins, violas, cellos, and basses. That’s what we do. Why we do it is so much more important. We believe that everyone should have access to music education because the benefits of learning music go far beyond the ability to simply play an instrument. We believe that well-supported grassroots music programs can have a profound impact on our society at all levels.”
Samuel, which violin did you choose?
It was my first time choosing an instrument. I looked for differences in projection, tone, and sound and how easily I could shift up and down the neck. In the end I chose the Hagen Weise 120 ¾ violin. It has a rich and complex sound, my fingers felt very relaxed when shifting, and the projection was still quite good. It has an oiled neck (not varnished) which has made shifting a whole lot easier. It’s really made a difference to my playing to have a significantly better instrument and bow – I’m amazed by how much!
Where do you practice?
Mainly in my bedroom but also in the kitchen so I can play my pieces to my parents.
Apart from violin, what are your interests? I enjoy sport especially running and soccer.
Favourite artist/s?
They change depending on the piece of music: Joshua Bell, David Oistrakh, Vengerov and Ann-Sophie Mutter. I’m really looking forward to seeing the Latvian violinist Baiba Skride in concert.

What is unique about the cello?
The extraordinary deep and fine sound of the instrument. The variety of colours and sounds that can be created is like no other instrument, however the process of choosing and perfecting these colours is difficult.
What piece do you aspire to play?
Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. The simplicity requires the greatest technique, and the delicacy and finesse required for this piece makes it a real masterpiece to work on.
Did you choose the clarinet, or did it choose you? The clarinet chose me! I was brought up in a musical family, surrounded by music for as long as I can remember. My love for the clarinet has ebbs and flows like all things in life – yet for the past almost 13 years, I always gravitate back to it!
What challenges have you encountered in playing the clarinet?
The mental challenge. I have struggled with finding motivation at times to practice – especially during COVID as I had no performances to look forward to. However, I’ve recently taken up the 100 days of Practice Challenge which I recommend doing if you’re struggling with practice, because it just becomes a routine you can be creative with! I’ve noticed great changes in my tone and sound!
Your favourite composers for clarinet? Brahms, Mozart, Rossini, and Weber! I love playing romantic or operatic music, sometimes jazz as well to mix it up a bit!

Denis Eddy assesses the music and reputation of Heinrich SchützThis article was originally written by the late Denis Eddy for the then 2MBS-FM’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of Schütz’s birth in 1985. It has been updated and slightly adapted by Paul Roper. This year is the 350th anniversary of Schütz’s death, on 6 November 1672, and we are honouring the occasion with special programming in October and November.
Heinrich Schütz was, according to Joshua Rifkin, ‘the greatest German composer of the 17th century, and the first of international stature. Through the example of his compositions, and through his teaching, he played a major part in establishing the traditions of high craftsmanship and intellectual depth that marked the best of his nation’s music for more than 250 years after his
Indeath.’anactive
compositional life of more than sixty years, and despite the dislocations caused by the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and by eventually failing sight, Schütz successfully wedded German and Italian, intimate and magnificent elements into a personal style with distinction and beauty.
Schütz’s output was almost exclusively sacred music. Few secular, and no purely instrumental, pieces survive. In his sacred music he clearly favoured Biblical verses over liturgical, hymn or devotional texts. It was his contribution to prefer to set his native, strongly accented language rather than Latin, and in doing so to evolve his own synthesis of dramatic monody and traditional polyphony. ‘Word-interpretative’ setting was a cornerstone of baroque practice, but the wordmusic relationship in Schütz’s work is fundamental and intimate. Einstein called him ‘the most spiritual musician the world has ever known’.
Schütz was born in Köstritz (now Bad Köstritz), near Gera in Thuringia, in October 1585, the date varying from the 8th to the 18th of the month. He was the second child of his father Christoph’s second marriage. In 1590 the family moved from Gera to Weißenfels, where Christoph later became
burgomaster as well as owning two inns, one of them known as Zum Schützen. It is recorded that Christoph provided his children with a thorough education, both religious and liberal. Henrich, the form of his name used by the composer throughout his life, showed early talent as a singer.
In 1598 the beauty of the young Schütz’s voice brought him to the notice of an inn guest, the nobleman Landgrave Moritz of Hesse-Kassel, known as ‘The Learned’. After much persuasion Christoph allowed the boy to be placed in 1599 at the Mauritianum, a college maintained by the Landgrave at his capital, Kassel, for young noblemen and choristers. He remained there, serving as a choirboy and learning to play the organ and to understand the composition techniques of his time, until after his voice broke. At some time Schütz also acted as tutor to the Landgrave’s sons. He was by now a widely read and cultured young man, accustomed to the company of the sons of the nobility. He matriculated at the University of Marburg in 1608 in order to read law, since his parents opposed his practice of music as anything other than an avocation.
However, Moritz granted him a stipend to stay what became more than three years with Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice, in order that, ‘since at that time there was in Italy a musician and composer, famous but advanced in age, I should not neglect to hear and learn something from the same’. That Gabrieli thought highly of his pupil’s organ-playing and composition is shown by his request to Moritz that Schütz’s term be extended beyond the intended two years, and by his having Schütz deputise for him at St Mark’s on occasion. Schütz never acknowledged any teacher but Gabrieli, and always with the highest praise.
Most of Schütz’s surviving 500 or so works were published in fourteen collections, the production of which he usually oversaw. About half of his unpublished work, attested in various court diaries, has not survived. Music drawn from all
these volumes, as well as from Schütz’s musical influences, friends and followers, may be heard in a series of five programs to be broadcast by 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. Taking our cue from Einstein’s epithet, the programs are titled Moved by the spirit They comprise Baroque and Before on Fridays 14, 21 and 28 October (at 10pm), Saturday Matinee on 22 October (at 2.30pm), and Sunday Special on 6 November (at 3pm), the anniversary of Schütz’s death 350 years ago. The date(s) shown against each publication indicate when we are broadcasting works taken from it.
His opus 1, Il primo libro de madrigali (SWV1-19), nineteen Italian madrigals by Henrico Sagittario Allemanno (14/10, 28/10), was published during his time in Italy (1611) with a dedication to the Landgrave, and was enthusiastically received. Schütz returned to Moritz’s court at Kassel as second organist, tutor to the princes and private secretary to Moritz, in 1613 after Gabrieli’s death. At the request of the Elector Johann Georg of Saxony he took a temporary post at the Dresden court in 1615, effectively as Kapellmeister. Johann Georg later pressed Moritz to cede Schütz’s services solely to himself. Michael Praetorius, although officially organist, Kapellmeister and secretary to the Landgrave of Brunswick at Wolfenbüttel, was serving as visiting director of music in the absence since 1613 of a full-time leader. Moritz was politically obliged to yield in 1617, although Schütz continued to supply music for Kassel during the following 30odd years.
In 1619 Schütz published, to coincide with his marriage to Magdalena Wildeck, his opus 2, the Psalms of David, together with some motets and concertos (SWV22-47) (14/10). This collection of double-choir or polychoral settings for up to twenty voices clearly shows Gabrieli’s influence, as well as familiarity with the new Italian monodic style. The second preface contains some of Schütz’s most explicit performance directions for his works. His long service in Dresden, through the increasingly arduous conditions occasioned by the war, even though Saxony did not become actively involved for more than ten years after its start, was punctuated by another visit to Italy (1628-29) and three to Copenhagen (1633, 1637, 1642). It continued for 24 years after the war’s end, although with decreasing responsibilities after the Elector’s death in 1656.
In 1623 Schütz published his History of the joyous and victorious resurrection of our only Saviour and benefactor Jesus Christ, SWV50 (op 3) (22/10). He took the text and declaimed chant structure for the Easter story of his predecessor at Dresden, Antonio Scandello, as a departure point for a fusion of monody and polychoral writing, with flexible recitative. Madrigalian influences continued in the Cantiones sacrae (SWV53-93) for four voices, of 1625 (op 4) (14/10). Daring chromaticism, monodic declamation and use of the most ‘modern’ stylistic elements make this a most expressive collection of sacred music to Latin texts from the Lutheran liturgy.
In addition, there are:
• Op 5, Psalmen Davids … in teutzsche Reimen gebracht … mit ein hundert und drey eigenen Melodeyen (SWV97-256, 1628), the Becker Psalter, with a foreword dated on the second anniversary of the death of his wife in September 1625. (6/11)
• Op 6, Symphoniae Sacrae (SWV257-76, 1629), published in Venice during his second visit, during which he familiarised himself with developments in the work of Monteverdi. (21/10)
• Op 7, Musicalische Exequien … dess … Herrn Heinrichen … Reussen (SWV279-81, 1636) (14/10)
• Op 8, Erster Theil kleiner geistliche Concerten (SWV282-305, 1636) (14/10)
• Op 9, Anderer Theil kleiner geistliche Concerten (SWV306-37, 1639) (28/10)
• Op 10, Symphoniarum sacrarum secunda pars (SWV341-67, 1647) (14/10)
• Op 11, Musicalia ad chorum sacrum, das ist: Geistliche Chor-Music … erster Theil (SWV369-97, 1648) (14/10, 6/11), in which, for the benefit of a younger generation of composers who no longer understood or sympathised with the linear movement of counterpoint, he wrote in his foreword: ‘Thus I feel myself constrained to essay such picayune works without the Bassum Continuum and perhaps hereby to call upon some German composers, particularly those in the process of becoming composers, to first crack this difficult nut, in which is concealed the kernel, the only way to a satisfactory counterpoint, before they attempt a concert style of music’.
• Op 12, Symphoniarum sacrarum tertia pars (SWV398-418, 1650) (6/11)
• Op 13, Zwölff geistliche Gesänge (SWV420-31, 1657) (14/10)
• Historia der freuden … und gnadenreichen Geburth … Jesu Christi, the Christmas Story (SWV435, 1664) (6/11)
When, owing to the intransigence and illjudged alliances of the Elector Johann Georg, Saxony became more actively involved in – and eventually part of the battleground during – the Thirty Years War, the musical life of the Dresden court was completely disrupted. Even after the Treaties of Westphalia ended the war in 1648 the wretchedness of the court musicians, let alone of the population, did not end. From 1653 Schütz petitioned the Elector to be allowed to retire from the daily responsibility for the Kapelle – he was now more than 63 years old – but was not able to do so until the Elector’s death in 1656. With only nominal duties at the court of Johann Georg II, Schütz now began to put the unpublished portion of his life’s work in order. He did not see it all through the press, not only because of the difficulties he sometimes had in getting his pension from the court but also, perhaps, because he feared that none but the best equipped Kapellen could do some of his works justice.
His three Passions, after Matthew, Luke and John, SWV479 (21/10), 480 and 481 (28/10), belong to the mid-60s. They contrast with his Resurrection story and the Seven words of our dear Saviour, SWV478 (28/10), motet-Passion works setting the entire narrative to polyphony. Schütz chose not only to add hymns and arias, as his contemporaries were doing, but to use a cappella voices in a narrative told in a freely invented plainsong-like recitative. The operatic skill with which he illuminates the texts makes us all the more regret the loss of the music for his opera Dafne (1627). Although written when Schütz was about 70, their freshness and fiery affirmation of faith are apparent to this day.
Although he had retired to Weißenfels, the city of his boyhood, Schütz was mindful of an earlier promise to Johann Georg I to die in Dresden, to which he returned in about 1670. His last work, expressly designated as his swansong and which was used for his funeral, was derived from Psalms 119 and 100, and included a German Magnificat (SWV482-94, 1671) (22/10). Schütz was buried in the old Frauenkirche in Dresden, next to his wife who had died 47 years before. He had, despite the custom of the age, never remarried. In 1747 the decaying church was pulled down, and his grave was lost.
Unheard melodies
Stephen Gard considers Schubert’s Unfinished SymphonyHeard melodies are sweet, but those unheard Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on; Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear’d, Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone...
- John Keats: Ode on a Grecian Urn, 1819
Max Beerbohm, in his essay Quia imperfectum, once observed: There is a peculiar charm for all of us in that which was still in the making when its maker died, or in that which he laid aside because he was tired of it, or didn’t see his way to the end of it, or wanted to go on to something else. Mr Pickwick and the Ancient Mariner are valued friends of ours, but they do not preoccupy us like Edwin Drood or Kubla Khan.
Or in this case, Franz Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony of 1822, D759, which he never completed. Perhaps did not plan to, though the title ‘Unfinished’ was not Schubert’s.
We have two movements of the ‘Unfinished’, plus a sketchy scherzo, and something that might have been a fourth movement, had he intended a symphony on the Beethoven model. Schubert set it aside, as he did a good many ‘unfinished’ works. So prolific an artist! Schubert is reputed to have admired a song and asked who the composer was. The composer was Franz Schubert.
A two-movement symphony is not impermissible, merely unusual. The score, buried for three decades after his death within a hillock of Schubert manuscripts, has all the hallmarks of the genre. Headed in Schubert’s hand ‘Symphony’, signed and dated by him, calling for symphonic forces, we may conclude that he intended it to follow his other symphonies. In time it did, and won much applause for its excellence – and its tantalising promise of things that might have followed. But we can only surmise.
The ‘Unfinished’ symphony is in the key of B minor (or ‘H moll’), which, as Brian Newbould observes, even Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven tended to avoid in symphonic composition, doubtless due to the limitations of orchestral horns. The key asserts Schubert’s ‘modernity’, advances in technology allowing more chromatic colour. Valves were first fitted to horns in 1814; to trumpets and trombones in 1821. And fitted in Vienna, Schubert’s place of birth and residence for much of his thirty-one busy years.
The by-name ‘Unfinished’ is unjust. The ‘Eighth’ is beautifully ‘finished’, the work of a master. “Even Mendelssohn,” observes one critic, “the great reviver of Schubert’s music never dared complete the ‘unfinished.’” Such compunction has not stayed some modern hands, with results that a listener may judge. Compare attempts at a sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
A broken pillar was sometimes erected above the tomb of one who died young; it signified a life cut short. Yet the broken pillar itself was complete, as a work of art.
Let us be content with our wonderful legacy. Perhaps in some cosmic sense, that is all Schubert was ‘meant’ to leave us. Unheard melodies may be sweeter, but those unborn must be mellifluous indeed.

When old age shall this generation waste, Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say’st, “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,”—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

PictorialHear My Eyes - Chopper
Lyndon Pike reviews the live score to Andrew Dominik’s controversial film Sat 27 August 2022 – The City Recital Hall, Sydney
Hear My Eyes is a production company which has set out to engage both music and cinema lovers in a series of events marrying an all-new live score played alongside iconic films such as Eraserhead, No Country for Old Men, Two Hands and Suspiria.
The most recent pairing was a veritable perfect match, setting Andrew Dominik’s 2000 film Chopper, which won Eric Bana Best Actor and Dominik Best Director at that year’s AFI awards, with a quartet of seasoned musicians including the film’s original score composer, Mick Harvey.
Harvey, a prolific musician, composer, and member of Nick Cave projects The Bad Seeds and the groundbreaking Birthday Party, was joined on stage by Gareth Liddiard, guitarist and songwriter for The Drones and TFS, Jim White, drummer for much loved instrumental trio The Dirty Three, and renowned jazz pianist Chris Abrahams of The Necks. Together, they provided a sound that was taut and tingling, moody and menacing – scoring a controversial film whose original release the Victorian Police had urged the public to boycott.
The film itself focuses on bestselling author and career criminal, Mark Brandon ‘Chopper’ Read, depicted in a series of vignettes, and set over an undisclosed period throughout his lengthy incarceration and brief stint in the outside world. Film critic Roger Ebert describes the film’s portrayal of Read as ‘a man who seems to stand outside himself and watch what Chopper does’. A view that we as an audience are subconsciously undertaking –here is a man steeped in wrongdoing who, thanks to Eric Bana’s portrayal, ensures that you cannot take your eyes off him for the entire film.
Australians have long had a fascination with the criminal, the anti-hero. From Ned Kelly to Mad Max, our cinema is littered with nefarious subjects that show the seedier side of life; seemingly, we cannot get enough of it. This is the template laid out for the four musicians playing a live fusion of improvisational free jazz and experimental noise, each with an individual screen positioned before him, giving a visual cue point for each scene.
Chris Abrahams played some repeated motifs in a nod to Mick Harvey’s original soundtrack, not dissimilar to his work on the soundtrack to the equally dark 1998 Australian film, The Boys Switching from piano to synthesizer, Abrahams is no stranger to improvisation, and it was his part in the production that gave the sound its most haunting timbre.
Gareth Liddiard sat with his modified red Fender Jaguar, a notepad covered in hand-scrawled ideas and cues. He utilised his instrument at times as a percussive device, hitting and tapping the body and strangling the neck to emit tension and squalling staccato mechanics not usually associated with six stringed instruments. It was Liddiard who would play at times during scenes with dialogue, providing a touch that was barely there, unnoticeable until he stopped playing. His role was one of creating tension.
The respect the musicians had for the dialogue was always evident; they would sit for long stretches of the film, becoming the audience as they watched, awaiting the next scene that demanded their input.
Mick Harvey switched between synthesizer and bass guitar, providing a bed and undertow for the others to work over. He settled for the ‘less is more’ approach, all the while silently conducting the mélange and maelstrom around him.
Witnessing Jim White as a drummer, switching between mallet, brush and stick can appear at times to be like watching a man who is working the kit in a random and undisciplined order, only to have every snap, roll, beat, and shine make perfect sense. It was White who worked the others up in the louder passages, colouring the darkness with explosions and white light flashes.
This session of Hear My Eyes was a truly remarkable opportunity to revisit not only one of the most arresting films ever produced in Australia, but to enjoy it refashioned for the senses by four of the best musicians to have emerged from Australia’s underground underbelly. I look forward to what the CRH team have in store for their next season of Sound and Vision
Live at the Village
Barry O’Sullivan attends a celebration of live music Illustration by Lyndon Pike Photo by Barry O’SullivanLive at the Village, a not-for-profit arts collective based in the Blue Mountains, presented an all-day feast of fusion music from some of Australia’s most evocative, contemporary artists on Saturday, 27 August at the Blue Mountains Theatre, Springwood.
Music of the highest artistic quality was introduced by Master of Ceremonies ABC jazz presenter James Valentine.
The Festival’s opening act, tribal belly dance ensemble Caravan, brought its stylistic influences from East India and North Africa, displayed in its traditional, folkloric style in an excitingly theatrical manner with music, elaborate costumes, and artistic skill.
The ever-popular award-winning act The Morrisons followed, enveloping its audience into its world of folk, gospel, and original compositions, merging distinctly Australian stories with music from the American roots canon spanning bluegrass and country.
Pioneering composer and social activist Keyna Wilkins presented a program of music on flute and keyboards which drew inspiration from a diverse range of subject matters. Commencing with music inspired by the recorded atmospheric sounds of NASA in the outer hemispheres to that which highlighted the heart-wrenching plight of imprisoned refugees, the performance climaxed with a stark message about a possible impending climatic disaster heralded by Greta Thunberg. Keyna and her drumming partner Shane Carpini delivered an informative audiovisual presentation of elation, pathos, and the impending doom designed to prick the conscience of her audience.
The spectacular Mara! Big Band’s performance of Zashto? also encompassed the spectre of incarceration (both physical and psychological) that has hovered over each wave of migration to this country in the past 230 years.
Through the voices of three women who arrived in Australia at very different times in our history, Zashto? investigated the deprivation of liberty and the experience of trauma that many of our community have been scarred by in their migration experience and posed the question of why is it so.
Band members shone with impressive solos on piano accordion by Gary Daley, the saxophones of Andrew Robson, Sandy Evans, and Paul Cutlan, the effervescent James Greening’s trombone, tuba, and pocket trumpet, with multiinstrumentalist Jess Ciampa’s brilliant percussion skills and Lloyd Swanton’s comforting stalwart bass playing highlights of the performance.
Master drummer Dr. Simon Barker and shakuhachi exponent Bronwyn Kirkpatrick captivated their audience into the sonic wonderland of wind and percussion transporting them on an unforgettable journey, drawing inspiration from the Japanese and Korean music traditions. Their performances delivered a stunning collaboration between two outstanding musicians and, for me, was a Festival highlight.
The strikingly different ethnicity of the two quintet jazz ensembles climaxed the Festival. The Zela Margossian Quintet performed its freshly minted compositions from its newest release, as well as some from its debut recording, with panache and flair. The band’s musicianship was first class and Margossian’s pianism and improvisational skills are exceptional. The audience was absorbed by the ensemble’s enthusiastic interplay and their inventive solos particularly those of Stuart Vandergriff on saxophones and Jacques Emery on double bass.
The soulful meditations of the Sandy Evans Quintet, with its stunning tabla and drum exchanges, lifted and nourished the souls of the audience and finalized a Festival of conscience and ethnicity, and a celebration of the performance of live music.

Volunteer Spotlight Louise Levy
Louise Levy’s love of jazz stood her in good stead when, about twelve years ago, she had a stroke and could no longer work as Marketing Manager for an international company. After rehab she looked around for something to do. She says: “My partner, Nev Dorrington, who presents New Horizons on Fine Music Sydney once a month, suggested that I should talk to Fine Music and see what happened. Because I enjoyed jazz, I hoped that I could work as a volunteer for the jazz section. Fortunately, the station needed help in the library adding new catalogues for the jazz section. For the first couple of years at the station, I only did data entry that sometimes drove me crazy. Finding some information on one CD could take two hours or more. I would search for all sorts of things, such as the composer, the group, the performer, album and so on.”
A few years later a new marketing manager invited Louise to try other things rather than just the catalogue. She began doing the weekly advertising, then moved on to search for jazz birthdays and assisting with sponsorship. Louise comments that: “From then on, life changed, and I got more involved with the jazz section. Plus, later I started writing articles.”
Her recollections of listening to jazz are vast: “In the 80s I listened to an album by Miles Davis for the first time entitled Sketches of Spain, which began with the Concierto de Aranjuez. Miles was (and, for me, still is) one of the unique, innovative, and creative geniuses in jazz. My mind wanders, and I remember listening to female jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Billy Holiday. And contemporary artists such as Sade.”
“Later in the 90s, I remember going to The Basement hearing live jazz players such as Paul Grabowsky, a pianist and composer, and Vince Jones, singer, songwriter, trumpet, and flugelhorn player. In 2015, Jones and Grabowsky collaborated and produced an album called Provenance. Six months later they appeared at The Basement – I couldn’t go but I bought the album. Nowadays, The Basement is temporarily without a home but as soon as they find a venue it will be back in Sydney.”
Louise adds: “I like the structure of the work at the station and the volunteers I chat with on the days I am there. Another upside I love is that when I am at home I can listen to jazz On Demand from Fine Music. I start with going online, choose the presenter I am interested in at that time, then sit back and listen for an hour or more.”

The latest recording from the American soprano Joyce DiDonato is titled Eden, and the concept is a collection of songs and arias that engage with the natural world. The works chosen date from the dawn of the Baroque (Biagio Marini’s Who has ever seen the sun?) through to brand new (Rachel Portman’s The first morning of the world). There is much for the curious as well as for those who seek the familiar, though the familiar is usually placed in ways that reveal new aspects to the listener (two songs from Mahler’s
Ruckert Lieder). The orchestra, Il Pomo d’Oro, known for its historical performance practice and ably led by conductor Maxim Emelyanychev, brings a lively character and musical authority to the recording. The overriding impression, however, is the expressive beauty of DiDonato’s voice, which moves from ancient to modern, whilst tastefully highlighting the emotional level of each song. This recording is one that brought great enjoyment to this listener and I’m sure it will to you too.

Given the ABC’s recent Classic 100: Music for the Screen initiative, it seems appropriate to be reviewing a box set devoted to film music conducted and, in most cases, written by Bernard Herrmann, a composer described as ‘the most radical and innovative film composer of his day’. The film scores on Phase 4 is a 7-CD box set released last year to mark the 110th anniversary of Herrmann’s birth, with five CDs devoted to his compositions and two to those by other composers, the most notable of which is music by Shostakovich (Hamlet), Miklós Rózsa (Julius
Caesar) and Arthur Bliss (Things to come). In his own compositions his experiments with orchestral colour, and his insistence on mood rather than melody, led both to the hugely enjoyable scores for the fantasy films of Ray Harryhausen (such as Mysterious island) and to the psychologically complex music for such films as Jane Eyre and Fahrenheit 451. In Herrmann’s lifetime, the term ‘film composer’ tended to be rather dismissive; thanks in large part to his body of work, that is no longer the case.

Despite the interruption to the traditional marketing of music of what a pandemic can do, vocalist Emma Pask has managed to release an album of songs recorded at various times prior. She has delivered a vocal assemblage that is truly representative of her career so far. The arrangements of mostly standards afford her a plush sonic environment, allowing her to utilise her complex scatting, the rigors of improvisation and invention that is very much her forte. Some of the songs come in from the left of field: Heading in the Right Direction, Rumour Has It, and The Feather which is co-penned with bassist Phil Stack. Pask approaches these admirably. Although simply accompanied by a standard jazz trio, the band
of Kevin Hunt (piano), Tim Firth (drums) and Phil Stack on double bass is hip and tight, and excellent with some of the Latin music Pask has chosen to showcase. Baden-Powell’s Cai Dentro, and Jobim’s If You Never Come To Me are superbly interpreted trueto-form. The music presented throughout the album is variously a mood, a feeling, a memory, or an emotional state, the same as she delivers in her live performances. The recordings will delight and please her everincreasing volume of fans. They will convince any newcomers that Emma Pask has a great voice, an infectious swing, and a whole lot of chops.

In the first circle of hell, Dante learns the story of Paolo and Francesca. The lame Lanciotto Malatesta is overcome with jealousy, regretting that he had sent his handsome younger brother Paolo to woo Francesca, who was given to understand that Paolo was to be her bridegroom. Lanciotto pretends to leave Francesca, now his wife, in Paolo’s care but he watches as they read the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, which drives them to admit their love. As they kiss, Lanciotto kills them.

RINUCCIO: Agostino Lazzari, ten GIANNI SCHICCHI: Fernando Corena, bar Florence Maggio Musicale Ch & O/Lamberto DeccaGardelli.411 665-2 52
The estate of Buoso Donati has been left to charity and his relatives want to find a way of breaking his will. Runuccio suggests that his prospective father-in-law, Gianni Schicci, be called in. Donati’s body is removed and Gianni Schicci impersonates him, speaking to the doctor from behind the bed curtains. The doctor does not recognise the substitution and is delighted to find his patient much improved. Gianni Schicchi then dictates a new will but the relatives are horrified when they discover that he has left most of the estate to himself. They have to acquiesce when he reminds them of the penalties if the ruse is discovered. Senza mamma, o bimbo, tu sei morto!, from Suor Angelica (1918). After their house subsides, Sasha, his wife Masha, Lidochka and her father, Semyon, are granted newly-built apartments in Cheryomushki, a district of Moscow, but when they arrive the estate manager Barabashkin won’t hand over the keys. Boris, who is in love with Lidochka. His friends, Sergei and Luisia, have accompanied them. Boris uses the construction crane to lift Lidochka and her father through the window into their new apartment. Barabashkin and Drebednov burst through a hole in the wall from the adjacent flat and eject the new occupants. Drebednov wants the flat for himself. He has allocated the adjoining apartment to his girlfriend Vava and wants to illegally join the two together. After Drebednov’s corruption is uncovered, Sasha and Masha hold a housewarming party where they and their friends agree to defeat Drebednov and Barabashkin. Liusia helps the tenants create a magic garden where bureaucrats are not heard and only the truth is told. Consequently, Drebednov and Barabashkin confess their crimes and are vanquished.

Verdi, G. I Lombardi. Opera in four acts. Libretto by Temistocle Solera. First performed Milan, ARVINO:1843.Jerome Lo Monaco, ten PAGANO: Ruggero Raimondi, bass
VICLINDA: Desdemona Malvisi, sop
GISELDA: Cristina Deutekom, sop
ORONTES: Plácido Domingo, ten Ambrosian Singers; Royal PO/Lamberto PhilipsGardelli.422 420-2 2:16
In 1099, Arvino and Pagano are in love with Viclinda but she has married Arvino. Pagano, furious with jealousy, tries to murder him and is forced to flee Lombardy and become a bandit. Time passes and Arvino has a daughter, Giselda, and Pagano has been forgiven. Pagano’s jealousy however, is not dead. Again he tries to kill Arvino and by mistake kills his old father. He flees to Palestine and there, in a cave on the banks of the Jordan, he becomes known as ‘Peter the Hermit’. Among the Christian army, which he is instrumental in bringing to the Holy Land, is Arvino whose daughter is held captive by Orontes. However, Giselda has been well treated and is in love with Orontes and elects to remain with her lover. She flees with him. He is mortally wounded and seeks shelter in Peter’s cave. Here he embraces Christianity and dies in her arms. Peter meets his death in the siege of Jerusalem.

Gualtiero, King of Sicily, married a poor shepherdess, Griselda. The marriage was deeply unpopular with the king's subjects and when a daughter, Costanza, was born, the king had to pretend to have her killed while secretly instead sending her to be brought up by Prince Corrado of Apulia. Now, faced with another rebellion from the Sicilians, Gualtiero is forced to renounce Griselda and promises to take a new wife. Costanza, unaware of her true parentage, is the proposed bride. She is in despair because she is in love with Roberto.
The courtier, Ottone, is in love with Griselda and follows her when she is banished to her home in the country. She angrily rejects his advances. Gualtiero foils an attempt by Ottone to kidnap Griselda and allows her back to the court but only as Costanza's slave. Ottone still pursues Griselda and Gualtiero promises him her hand as soon as he himself has married Costanza. Griselda declares she would rather die and, moved by her faithfulness, Gualtiero takes her back as his wife. He reveals the true identity of Costanza and allows her to marry Roberto.

The impoverished Count Tassilo, under an assumed name, is appointed bailiff on Countess Maritza’s estate. He needs to provide a dowry for his sister Lisa. Maritza, a young widow, arrives at the estate to celebrate her ‘engagement’, an invention intended to put off her numerous suitors. She chooses the name, Baron Koloman Zsupán, for her fictitious fiancé taking it from Strauss' operetta, The gypsy baron. Lisa is one of Maritza's guests. Tassilo instructs her to keep his identity secret. A genuine Koloman Zsupán materialises, having seen an announcement of his 'engagement' in the press.
and reminds him that he has not yet divorced her. Unfortunately, René has already spent the 500,000 francs and cannot buy his way out of the contract.
Although she is secretly delighted, Angèle denounces the Count's act in marrying for money and he storms off angrily. Meanwhile, the Prince decides to marry a Russian countess instead. The Count, whose properties had previously been confiscated, is able to pay back the money when his properties are restored to him. He tells Angèle that he loves her and all ends happily.

Tassilo is heard singing Komm, Zigány (Come, gypsies) and Maritza orders him to repeat it. When he refuses, she fires him but, before he can leave, she apologises. Zsupán has decided that he prefers Lisa to Maritza, while Maritza is increasingly attracted to Tassilo. Another guest reveals Tassilo's identity and Maritza in a high temper insults Tassilo, who declares that he will leave. However, before he goes, the repentant Maritza writes him a 'reference' which is in fact a proposal of marriage. The finale finds Maritza and Tassilo, and Zsupán and Lisa, engaged. Lehár, F. The Russian Prince Basil arranges a marriage between Angèle, an opera singer, and the penniless Bohemian spendthrift, Count René of Luxembourg. In exchange for 500,000 francs, René is to marry a mysterious bride and divorce her within three months. The Prince would then be able to marry Angèle as she will have attained a title through this marriage. During the wedding ceremony in the studio of René’s friend, the artist Armand Brissard, bride and groom are separated by a screen so that they may not see each other but when they touch hands in the exchange of rings, they fall in love.
Months later, Angèle gives a party which René attends. Without knowing that they are already husband and wife, they are immediately attracted to each other but believe that their romance is hopeless. The Prince announces his engagement to Angèle but Brissard reveals to René that his mysterious bride is Angèle
