Beethoven’s Vocal Music Christ on the Mount of Olives and Fidelio Written by the Programming Committee
The operatic overtones – the humanisation and secularisation of Jesus – seem to have given Beethoven some concern. He carried out revisions after the premiere, and again before the work’s eventual publication in 1811. Nevertheless, it was probably good preparation for the composition of Fidelio in coming to terms with both the form and the forces required for an opera. Both works were commissioned by Emanuel Schikaneder for his Theater an der Wien. Schikaneder, who is remembered as the librettist for Mozart’s The Magic Flute, saw in Beethoven something worth investing in. Financially reckless, he was forced to sell the theatre in 1803 but, due to Imperial privilege, retained his post as artistic director and appointed Beethoven as resident composer.
The opera commission was perhaps Schikaneder’s attempt to revive the composer/librettist relationship he had hoped to have with Mozart before the latter’s untimely death. But while Schikaneder had correctly recognised Beethoven’s genius, he had miscalculated the composer’s operatic skill and interest. Within two months, Beethoven had abandoned Schikaneder’s libretto. With a contractual requirement to write an opera, however, he turned his attention to the story of Leonore.

Works by Beethoven for forces incorporating voice and orchestra are a small but significant and fascinating part of his oeuvre. The oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives, op 85, was his first major choral work and his first important composition with religious subject matter. It deals with the story of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, aware of the events about to unfold – his betrayal by Judas, his trial and his crucifixion – but uncertain as to his ability to cope with them. Thematically, the work parallels Beethoven’s life at the time of its composition. The oratorio was completed and premiered in 1803, not long after Beethoven wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament, an unsent letter to his siblings informing them of his increasing deafness and thoughts of suicide, but also of his resolve to keep composing.
The opera we now know as Fidelio was not finalised until 1814. In the nine years following the opera’s first performance (20 November 1805), Leonore’s story was condensed and further revised, until both the main work and overture were in a form with which Beethoven was relatively content. After all his struggles, Beethoven would have been glad to see his opera enter the repertory, but he could never have predicted the role it would come to play in the following century.
With its themes of personal sacrifice, hero(ine)ism and eventual triumph, infused with a struggle for liberty and justice, Fidelio spoke to a Germany emerging from the horrors of World War II. As Wilhelm Fürtwangler recognised, Beethoven deserves no accolades as a dramaturgist; however, the power of Fidelio lies not in the theatre, but in the music. “It is Beethoven himself. It is this ‘nostalgia of liberty’ he feels, or better, makes us feel; this is what moves us to tears.”
Beethoven scored the oratorio for soprano, tenor and bass soloists, a four-part chorus and a large orchestra. Jesus is sung by the tenor who, especially in his duet with the coloratura soprano Seraph, highlights his vulnerable human qualities and, for us, is a contrast with Bach’s Passion settings, in which Jesus is voiced by a bass and provides a more narrative than dramatic role.

What is the latest with your opera Émilie & Voltaire? Although the effects of COVID-19 on the theatre industry have been undeniably disastrous, I have found renewed vigour in my filmic pursuit of this opera. Collaborating with book writer Cheryl Sawyer, I had a vision to take Émilie & Voltaire to the screen; a vision spurred on with the recent events of the global pandemic. Although it may not be currently possible to experience live theatre, people have never been more ready to, so why not bring opera to their homes? With the generous support of Opera Australia, The City of Melbourne, Herbie’s Spices, Filmsticks UK and Bloom Creative Productions we will be filming a short 20-minute concept film that will screen at Italy’s Puccini Opera Festival on 12 December this year - no small feat for an original Australian piece on an international stage.
We have been referring to this time as “the
great pause”. We have been very fortunate to have been given the rare gift of extra time! This has ensured the best quality of the work. Dare I say, it’s done us the world of good?
Heading the vibrant, youthful team is producer Demi Louise, who is just brilliant! It is so inspiring to work with other young people who are as passionate about opera and film as I am. The role of the 18th Century heroine, Émilie is a demanding one, and requires a highly skilled actor and singer. So, we are working with none other than the incomparable Julie Lea Goodwin. The talented principal soprano is the darling of the Australian opera world, starring in Phantom of the Opera, La Boheme, Le nozze di Figaro and countless other productions. In an industry that is scrambling for content, there is no doubt that the film will be picked up by a digital streaming service. The production for the concept short is due to be filmed in Darling Point’s Lindesay in December.

Émilie & Voltaire was to originally screen in Lucca, Italy in May, as a result of COVID-19, it will now screen in December. How has this impacted your progress? We have been referring to this time as “the great pause”. We have been very fortunate to have been given the rare gift of extra time! This has ensured the best quality of the work. Dare I say, it’s done us the world of good? Although Émilie & Voltaire was scheduled to screen in Lucca, Italy in May, it will now screen in December. The biggest downside, of course, is that Cheryl (librettist) and I cannot be there in person. Considering this is one of my biggest achievements to date, it was quite a blow for the soul. All things considered however, there is far too much positivity surrounding this project to despair even for a moment! We are all so excited to see this work come to life!
What other projects have you been able to work on this year? This year has been such a roller-coaster for everyone, and I’m no exception. I found myself in Melbourne during the first lockdown and was then fortunate enough to make it back to Sydney for my cabaret, The Silver Score at Claire’s Kitchen, avoiding the second major lockdown. In August I was lucky enough to be the Artist in Residence at the Cowra Civic Centre. Cowra has an extensive history and story to tell about the role of peace. Drawing on the events of the Cowra Breakout with the Japanese and Italian prisoners of war, the World Peace Bell, the Japanese Gardens, Peace Precinct and ongoing commitment to international understanding, I composed the World Peace Day Suite which premiered on 21 September, the International Day of Peace.
What are you looking forward to next? Next? A holiday! And then we start the pursuit of turning Émilie & Voltaire into a feature film. The dream is to have the production shot in Château de Cirey, the home of the famous couple’s passionate love affair.

Striving Towards Transcendence The World of Beethoven’s Nine Symphonies Written by Nicky Gluch
It seems apt that in the year we celebrate Beethoven’s 250th, the musical world went silent. It calls into focus not only how Beethoven experienced the world, but also the very reason we play music. To Beethoven, music was living. Apocryphal or not, we can believe that he said: “What I have in my heart must come out, that is why I compose.” It fits with our understanding of a composer who expressed music in ways never heard before. Sure, Beethoven can be characterised as the composer who took the best of classicism and launched it toward the romantic but, when one looks at his nine symphonies, they do not follow so obvious a trajectory. It makes sense, when surveying a composer’s ouevre, to play their works in relative order but, if I was introducing someone to Beethoven’s symphonies, I would start with Symphony no 4. This is not simply because it is the most overlooked, but because it is the musicians’ symphony. Mendelssohn had a particular fondness for it and Schumann is said to have called it ‘a slender Greek maiden between two Norse giants’. It begins sparsely and mysteriously, a soft chord held in the woodwinds under changing notes in the strings before a series of separated quavers, ascending and descending, threaded together only by tension at the softest pianissimo.
Mauritius images GmbH / Alamy Stock Photo
how important a walk in nature is for our mental health and, with its storm and babbling brook, the symphony tends to that need. More, it unites us, for we all share in the gratitude when the storm passes and calm is restored.
From Symphony no 4, I’d then turn to Symphony no 8. Its Allegretto scherzando is said to parody the metronome, but the musical joke is far less interesting than what it says about how Beethoven creates contrast. The second movement, traditionally slow and melodic, has been replaced with something light and simple. The trumpets and timpani drop away so that the winds and strings can more freely converse and, on occasion, rhythmically align.
Where then to turn after Symphony no 6? Its twin, of course, the incomparable Symphony no 5; mighty for many reasons, including the transition from C minor to C major, as much inspired by Haydn as, perhaps, Beethoven’s Symphony no 1. Therefore, I’d turn next to Beethoven’s first endeavour. The dance-filled Symphony no 7 spins us closer towards the finale, before resting to take in the twin powers of Symphonies nos 3 and 9. The former, heroism, the latter, joy: one fallible, the other transcendent.
How different this is to the romance of the second movement in Beethoven’s Symphony no 2. In 3/8 time, it dances under a long line before coming to Beethoven’s idiomatic silence. These rests are not an absence of sound, however, but a transmission of tension, so that what comes afterwards is undeniably affected by what came before.
Nine symphonies, as similar and as different from each other as the nine muses, for they are individual utterances: Beethoven’s nine expressions, our nine experiences.
There’s an element of the pastoral to this second symphony, so where next to turn but to Symphony no 6. It is for good reason that Roger Benedict conducted this work for his Concert for Life. Lockdown has shown us just

Visited by the Virus Music and the Influenza Epidemic of a Century Ago Written by Paul Cooke
American Photo Archive / Alamy Stock Photo
Bernard Heinze, praised by Thérèse Radic in the Australian Dictionary of Biography as “the dominant musical figure of twentieth-century Australia”, was also the first Australian musician of note to have been affected by the pneumonic influenza epidemic. Studying at the Royal College of Music, London, when war broke out in 1914, he joined the Royal Garrison Artillery. Sometime in 1918, stationed on the Western Front in France, he contracted influenza and was sent to an isolation ward in Rouen to recover. The illness, perhaps initially brought to Europe in a milder form by American servicemen, began to affect soldiers more and more severely throughout 1918. As they returned to their countries of origin, so the epidemic spread worldwide. With 167,000 soldiers, as well as thousands of nurses, returning to Australia, it was inevitable that the nation would be affected. By the time the epidemic had run its course, 40% per cent of Australians had become ill and up to 15,000 died; in Sydney, 300,000 became ill and nearly 4,000 died. New South Wales was declared ‘infected’ in late January 1919. Churches, schools and entertainment venues were closed, along with other ‘drastic precautions’: these were eased in February, strengthened in April and lifted in May. What effect did the epidemic have on cultural life? Contemporary newspapers, together with memoirs, biographies and histories reflecting on music and
theatre of that time, are mostly silent. Nevertheless, we know that many events at the Sydney Town Hall, probably including organ recitals, were cancelled and that its basement was commandeered as an inoculation depot. The Tivoli Theatre closed, and its new show was postponed: changing attitudes to its war subject matter meant that the show ultimately failed at the box office. At the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, classes were cancelled, and the concert season was affected. Its 1919 season, when it resumed, however, turned out to be its most successful yet, with guaranteed funding meaning that it could program both ‘popular’ classics on Saturday nights and great masters such as Beethoven on Thursday nights. Some of the effects of the epidemic can be seen in the experience of brass bands at the time. They were affected in a variety of ways: they lost members; they lost rehearsal and performance spaces; they needed to become resilient enough to overcome a consequent loss of morale. The Ipswich Brass Band was touring south of the Queensland border when it was closed. The members of the band spent time at the Tenterfield showground in temporary quarantine along with many other Queenslanders, whom they entertained with impromptu concerts. It may be apocryphal, but it has been suggested that parties were held in Melbourne where guests were inoculated to the accompaniment of slow music and a prize was awarded “to the shapeliest arm”. I hope that meant welcome employment for a musician or two. Australia’s comparative isolation probably saved it from the worst ravages of the epidemic, and its death rate, while alarming, was one of the lowest of any country. Some composers became ill; some died. Darius Milhaud was in Brazil when the epidemic hit and witnessed its horrors. The final movement of his Sonata, op 47, incorporates a dirge for the victims. Listen to the stories and music of composers Artwork by Leita Hutchings affected by the epidemic in our special program. Friday 6 November at 1pm

20:00 AT THE OPERA Prepared by Elaine Siversen Rossini, G. Ciro in Babilonia. Opera in two acts. Libretto by Francesco Aventi. First performed Ferrara, 1812. BALDASSARE: Riccardo Botta, ten CIRO, King of Persia: Anna Rita Gemmabella, cont AMIRA: Luisa Islam-Ali-Zade, mezz ARGENE: Maria Soufis, mezz PRINCE ZAMBRI: Wojtek Gierlach, bass ARBACE: Giorgio Trusso, ten ARS Brunensis Chamber Choir; Württemberg PO/Antonino Fogliani. Naxos 8.660203-04 1:12 In the royal palace in Babylon of Baldassare (Belshazzar), King of the Assyrians, a victory over the Persians is being celebrated. The son of King Ciro (Cyrus), Cambise (Cambyses), and Ciro’s wife, Amira have been captured. Amira and her confidante, Argene, are led in and Baldassare announces that he will marry Amira but she rejects him. Ciro tells Prince Zambri to prepare for the marriage. Argene, left alone, is surprised to see the Persian-born Arbace, a captain in Baldassare's army, enter. He wishes to help her when Argene explains Baldassare's plan either to marry Amira or to put her to death. Ciro laments the loss of his wife and his son and urges his soldiers to exact revenge and attain victory. As they prepare to attack, Ciro sees Arbace, in Persian dress, coming out of the city gate. He explains his situation to Ciro and tells him of Baldassare's plan to marry Amira and of her refusal, for which she will be put to death. In the palace Baldassare, receives an ambassador from the Persians, in fact Ciro in disguise. Ciro proposes peace between the Persian and the Assyrian King and the return of Ciro's wife and son. Baldassare is ready to yield Cambise, but not Amira. Ciro is allowed to talk to Amira and Cambise in private. When Baldassare returns, he realises the true identity of Ciro and orders him to be put in chains. Baldassare is in the great banqueting-hall with princes and Babylonian ladies for a feast in honour of his god Baal. He prepares to drink from one of the sacred vessels seized from the Hebrew Temple, to show his scorn for the conquered people of Jerusalem and his contempt for their God. Accompanied by thunder and lightning, a hand appears, writing on the wall the words 'Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin'. Terror-stricken, Baldassare sends a guard to fetch wise men to interpret the words.
12
The Magi appear, with the Hebrew prophet Daniel who tells the king that he has displeased the God of Israel, scattering the people, destroying the Temple and profaning the sacred vessels. He goes on to foretell the division of the throne of Assyria between the Medes and Persians and the destruction of Babylon, with Baldassare and his people scattered like dust in the wind. The Magi tell him not to listen to this mad interpretation and that the gods demand the death of Ciro, his wife and son. Arbace and his men escort Ciro's family to the place of execution. They hear the sound of fighting. The Medes and Persians have defeated the Assyrian soldiers. Persian soldiers march into the main square of Babylon, with Ciro and Amira in a carriage. The triumphal procession brings Zambri in chains, with other Babylonian prisoners. The people proclaim the victory of Ciro and praise his expected clemency. Ciro attributes his victory to heaven, while Amira now expresses her relief at their renewed happiness. Grétry, A-E-M. Richard Coeur-de-lion. Opera in three acts. Libretto by MichelJean Sedaine. First performed Paris, 1784. RICHARD COEUR-DE-LION: Charles Burles, ten BLONDEL: Michel Trempont, bar SIR WILLIAMS: Jean van Gorp, bass LAURETTE: Mady Mesplé, sop FLORESTAN, Fortress governor: Ludovic de San, bass COUNTESS MARGUERITE: Danièle Perriers, sop IMEP Choirs; Belgian Radio and Television CO/Edgard Doneux. LP EMI 2C 167-16236/8 1:20 King Richard is imprisoned in a fortress. His troubadour, Blondel, who has been searching for him for a year, arrives in the village disguised as a blind man. The Welsh knight, Williams, who resides nearby, intercepts a love letter from Florestan, Governor of the castle, to his daughter Laurette. Blondel sees the arrival of Marguerite, Countess Flanders and Artois, at the Williams house. She is loved by King Richard who wrote a special tune for her. She hears Blondel playing it on his violin. As dawn breaks, Richard is walking on the castle terrace when he hears the sound of the violin playing the tune he had written for Marguerite. As Blondel sings, Richard joins in. Guards surround Blondel who tells them he has an important message for the Governor. He passes on the message that Laurette will meet Florestan that night. Marguerite asks Blondel about the song. He discards his disguise and she recognises him as Richard’s troubadour. He reveals that
Richard is in the fortress. When Florestan comes to meet Laurette, Marguerite’s knights capture him and storm the castle. During the battle, Blondel fights his way to the King, hands him a sword, and together they fight on to victory. Florestan is pardoned, Richard and Marguerite are reunited, and all give thanks to Blondel. 23:00 WINDS IN THE CHAMBER Prepared by Gerald Holder Triebensee, J. Trio in B flat. HERMANN: Vladimir Atlantov, ten LISA: Mirella Freni, sop COUNT TOMSKY: Sergei Leiferkus, bar PRINCE YELETSKY: Dmitri Hvorostovsky, bar COUNTESS: Maureen Forrester, cont Tanglewood Festival Chorus; American Boys Choir; Boston SO/Seiji Ozawa. RCA 9026-60992-2 Hermann is an officer with a passion for gambling but he does not gamble due to lack of funds. He is in love with a noble girl, Lisa, who is betrothed to Prince Yeletsky. Hermann learns that her grandmother, the Countess, nick-named ‘Queen of Spades’, was once a compulsive gambler with a winning formula for cards. Hermann longs to possess the secret in order to become rich and marry Lisa. Alone in her room, Lisa is bemoaning her engagement to the Count when Hermann arrives and declares his love. She gives him her key which he uses to go to the Countess’s room to discover the secret formula. He begs the Countess for the secret and, in his zeal, pulls out a pistol. Shocked, the Countess dies in terror. Lisa arrives and witnesses the scene, accusing Hermann of loving the cards more than her. The Countess’s ghost appears to Hermann and gives him the formula, commanding him to marry Lisa. Lisa and Hermann are reconciled, but believing his obsession with gambling is destructive, she kills herself. Hermann challenges Yeletsky to play cards and uses the formula, three, seven, ace. When his third card is revealed, it is the Queen of Spades which becomes the ghost of the Countess. Utterly deranged he stabs himself. Christine helps her husband, the composer Storch, to pack for a conducting tour and they argue all the time. While Storch is away, Christine is lonely so she goes tobogganing. She collides with a skier, Baron Lummer. They become friends and dance together at a ball but, when he asks for financial assistance, the friendship sours. Then she opens a letter meant for her husband, finding that it is from a lady arranging an assignation. She telegrams Storch demanding that they part forever. When Storch receives the telegram, he is bewildered by the accusations. Stroh, a conductor friend, admits that he knows the lady and surmises that his and Storch's surnames must have been confused. Christine, seeking a divorce, sends the Baron to Vienna to gather evidence of infidelity. Stroh visits Christine to explain the misunderstanding but she is reluctant to accept the truth. When Storch returns home, the arguing continues but the Baron arrives with evidence that Stroh rather than Storch has indeed known the lady. Christine now believes that her husband is blameless and she is forgiven by Storch who teases her about her dalliance with the Baron. Husband and wife are reconciled. 22:30 TO A RUSSIAN APOLOGY From Rossini to Shostakovich Rossini, G. Overture to Semiramide (1823). Tasmanian SO/Ola Rudner. ABC 476 2599 12 Reinecke, C. Emerging Artist Zela Margossian Carving out a unique, variegated musical niche Written by Barry O’Sullivan Photo by Armen Aghayan
After moving to Australia, she embarked on a new journey of nurturing her passion for jazz and enrolled in the Sydney Conservatorium’s Improvisation Course. It was there that she was encouraged by her mentor, Judy Bailey OAM, to incorporate her ethnic music into her jazz improvisations. Zela was delighted with the response from audiences and was encouraged to form her own jazz quintet in 2017.
Born in Beirut, of Armenian heritage, Zela Margossian began studying piano at four years of age when her mother bought her an upright piano. Zela was overwhelmed by its size as the removal men manoeuvered it up the tiny stairwell to their apartment. “It was huge to a four-year-old and my journey commenced then,” she said. “Throughout the war, while we were sheltering in the basement, I would go up during a ceasefire and practice every day.”
Performance highlights for the Quintet have included participation in the Sydney International Jazz Women’s Festival in 2017, 2019 and 2020, a tour to Lebanon taking part in the Beirut International Jazz Day Festival in 2018, a couple of key performances in the SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) Jazz Programs as well as performances at Foundry 616 Jazz Club in Ultimo and Old 505 Theatre venue in Newtown.
Her musical studies continued onward to higher levels, graduating from Hamazkaine’s Parsegh Ganatchian Musical College, and then continuing her musical studies at the Lebanese Higher State Conservatory. At the same time, she broadened her education in English literature at Haigazian University. Upon earning her B.A. degree in English literature, she re-located to Armenia to further her musical studies at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in the class of the renowned pianist and professor Vili Sargsyan. In 2007, Zela earned her Master’s degree in Piano Performance from the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in Armenia. During her years studying in Armenia, Zela developed a great passion for Armenian ethno-jazz music that she discovered in the local music venues of the capital. “My experiences in Armenia consolidated everything I had learned in Lebanon at the Lebanese Armenian schools that I attended, there,” said Zela. “After the Soviet regime ended there was more musical freedom, so the musicians in Armenia started fusing their folk music with jazz. This is the music I fell in love with.”
Our new work called Nar, Hymns of
New Hope, takes inspiration from the Armenian goddess of water, sea, and rain. It’s music that offers hope into the world and a celebration of new beginnings.

The Zela Margossian Quintet has also performed on tour in Australia to Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, and New Zealand. In 2019 their debut album Transition received an ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Award in the Best World Music Album category. Zela, together with co-composer saxophonist Jeremy Rose, has also been commissioned by the Australian Music Fund, in collaboration with the ABC, to create a new work to celebrate the diversity and range within the Australian musical sphere. “Our new work called Nar, Hymns of New Hope, takes inspiration from the Armenian goddess of water, sea, and rain. It’s music that offers hope into the world and a celebration of new beginnings” said Zela. Zela and Jeremy were chosen along with twenty-five other composers out of the 486 applicants to The Fund. This is truly an exciting musical journey for emerging artist Zela Margossian to continue upon whilst carving out a unique, variegated musical niche.

The Themes Of Fine Jazz on Fine Music The magic behind our jazz presenters’ theme tunes Written by Keith Pettigrew
Fine Jazz on Fine Music Sydney covers 15 quite different programs, presented by 18 jazz enthusiasts. Each presenter has their own focus from the 120-year history of jazz: 1900s classics; 50s bebop; 60s cool jazz; bossa nova; jazz versions of 21C pop; Middle Eastern; and emergent jazz for tomorrow. This short series brings you the magic of jazz, expressed by presenter’s theme tunes.
A Jazz Hour – Barry O’Sullivan on Fridays at Midday Theme: Dances on the Harbour (Andrew Robson, 2000) This tune pays homage to the vibrant jazz music scene in Sydney and has been the program’s theme since inception on the CBAA Network in 2004. While Barry presents the program from Fine Music Sydney, it is syndicated across Australia, and focuses on contemporary jazz from Australia and international recordings, with regular interviews of local/ visiting musicians. It was composed by saxophonist Andrew Robson for his iconic trio with Steve Elphick on bass and Hamish Stuart on drums and released on their 2000 album Sunman. The album showcases his creative voice on trumpet, anchored by the melody and groove of his rhythm section. It features some truly creative bass, saxophone and drum solos. This is the Sydney jazz scene, and indeed what the Australian jazz scene is all about. Jazz Pulse – Chris Wetherall on Mondays at 7:00pm
Urban Jazz Lounge – Leita Hutchings on Saturdays at Midday
Theme: St Thomas (Sonny Rollins 1956)
Theme: Blue Samba (Ike Quebec 1962)
Chris chose St Thomas because of its universal charm and appeal. Originally released on Rollin’s hallmark album Saxophone Colossus in 1956, it has been described by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically and artistically significant. Its calypso feel reflects Rollins’ lineage in the Virgin Islands, being named after one of the islands. The tune was based on the traditional English song The Lincolnshire Poacher, which evolved into a nursery song in the Virgin Islands, and which Rollins’ mother sang when he was young.
Leita’s program focuses on chilled-out bar-room jazz with new, hip, fun and traditional music, frequent hints of blues, all presented in a laid back, lounge style. Lunchtime Saturday is for those who have just rolled out of bed after a big Friday night, are driving their kids somewhere, or for those who have always listened to jazz and are just cool and groovy. Blue Samba was released on Quebec’s Bossa Nova Soul Samba album and was his last recording before his death in 1963. Listening to Blue Samba, you’re struck by Quebec’s very sexy tenor sax; it almost speaks. It’s the perfect music to listen in a comfortable chair with your GnT ... or to play while you chat to someone you’ve made a special dinner for … or just be lazy with, knees to the sky, sun baking on the beach… or ... whatever!
It was originally composed with lyrics: “I’m here on the beach in St. Thomas and it’s hot. Mojitos, toasty toes. Everything’s great, we’re on the beach.” However, it is Rollins’ bouncy phrasing that gives a rhythmic island feel, along with his humour, gentleness, and delicacy. The energy and tonality of St Thomas match the wide range of jazz in Jazz Pulse, from early Louis to Coltrane, with plenty of Ellington and Basie, through to hard bop.

Volunteer Spotlight Stephen Wilson Written by Pamela Newling Illustration by Lyndon Pike
Fascination with crystal sets, valve radio and TV hobbies magazines, from an early age led Stephen to an extensive career in broadcasting. He began as an apprenticed technician in Adelaide with the Post Master General’s Department, which then provided technical resources for ABC radio and TV. He also spent time on broadband and telephony links. At 21 he could scale the 600 foot tower in 11 minutes, with a colleague calculating he had an output of half a horse power! He later joined the Broadcasting Control Board in Adelaide before moving to Hobart where he spent 10 years as its State Representative, studying economics and law in his spare time. His career brought him to Sydney where he worked in policy positions in the Postal and Telecommunications Department and subsequently in a senior executive role with the Broadcasting Tribunal. A change of direction took him to WIN TV in Wollongong as Corporate Development Manager, providing in-house legal advice on defamation, real estate and broadcasting purchases and contracts. With a passion for renovation and a chance to escape the corporate world, Stephen moved back to Sydney and ran his own hardware business. He also responded to a call from the station for librarians and so began his contribution to Fine Music, wearing many hats. In addition to presenting, Stephen has chaired the Technical Committee. Other roles include Coordinator for Drive, Recent Releases and Operational Incidents. With a penchant for classical, romantic, baroque and early 20th century music, Stephen programs and presents Saturday Morning Music and Drive once or twice a month and also works as a duty presenter.
When questioned about presenting music that may not always be to the presenter’s taste, he said: “It is vital to be informed about the music and to present it professionally. It is a privilege to present—and that’s part of the privilege.” Stephen’s love of music developed from an early age, with a high school teacher who introduced him to Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo: Hebrew rhapsody and Brahms Alto rhapsody. He has fond memories of amateur performances of Gilbert and Sullivan and Die Fledermaus at the Theatre Royal in Adelaide. It’s wonderful for Fine Music to have such talent. Stephen does things he loves and others he’d rather not, but does so out of a sense of appreciation for the privilege of broadcasting.

The Sydney Society of Recorder Players Written by Robert Small Photo supplied by the Sydney Society of Recorder Players
The Sydney Society of Recorder Players (SSSRP) is one of Sydney’s musical institutions with deep links to professional and amateur players since its formation in 1956. The Society also commissions new works from prominent local composers for the recorder and encourages and supports visits from composers from overseas. We hold one of the world’s largest libraries of music for the recorder that includes many unique items only available to members.
Until COVID disrupted activities the SSRP had an unbroken record of holding monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. Hopefully, these meetings will resume soon, with their busy calendar of conductors taken from all walks of recorder life, each bringing unique insights to our members. We especially encourage students of the recorder from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to conduct meetings and perform for our members. Similarly, the Society organises weekend workshops often in conjunction
with other like-minded societies such as the Canberra Recorder and Early Music School (CREMS). CREMS and the SSRP have held joint workshops twice yearly in the beautiful highland village of Bundanoon since 1993. The group photograph was taken at the recent inaugural SSRP weekend workshop in Maitland for players from the Hunter Valley, Newcastle and the Central Coast.
A priority of the Society is to actively promote group playing for adult beginners. Playing in consort is one of the great joys of the recorder, not only for exploring the rich body of works for recorder consort, but also for the social interactions and wonderful sense of achievement and community that comes from group playing. The SSRP hosts a facilitated adult beginners group to introduce new players to group skills to prepare them for the monthly conducted meetings of the Society.
38
Another of the Society’s aims is to foster the understanding of the recorder as a versatile instrument with vast repertoire extending from the present day to the middle ages, countering the misconception that the school plastic descant is the sole representative of the instrument. In fact the recorder comes in a huge range of sizes from the largest sub basses to the garkleins and sopraninos with everything in between.
The SSRP radio program which airs on Fine Music Sydney presents the whole gamut of recorder music. We play film music featuring recorders, the great vituosi showing off their skills, renaissance consort music, baroque favourites and the latest works written for recorder. The SSRP is very much a vibrant forward-looking society that nevertheless honours the great foundations of the renaissance and baroque.
School recorder players are also encouraged by the SSRP, and our members have conducted workshops for schools preparing for the NSW Festival of Instrumental Music in the Opera House. Bobin Head school in northern NSW lost all of its recorders in the 2019-20 bushfires so upon hearing of this calamity the SSRP raised an appeal for instruments to replace those lost. After all the recorders were delivered, we received this note of appreciation from the school “They have arrived! Oh my goodness what a feast for the heart! So beautiful. And the recorder music is enough to last a lifetime of teaching and playing. We are so overjoyed!! In fact, we are so inspired by your generous donation to us that we are going to start a staff ensemble as part of our recovery! Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it!”
The Sydney Society of Recorder Players program airs at 6pm on the 5th Sunday of the month.

Thanks for playing the Carnival of the Animals this afternoon - “it was just delightful”. Please thank the presenter (Anne-Louise Luccarini) and programmer (Jacky Ternisian).
I was delighted to hear music with a gamelan on Saturday morning. Can you include more gamelan music. Margaret

Romantic Repeats Could someone please tell the presenter on air at the moment that his pronounciation of Schubert’s ‘Nachtstück’ was rather misleading. He said ‘Naked piece’ instead of ‘Night piece’ because he mispronounced the ‘ch’ as a ‘k’ sound. Tell him that in German the ‘ch’ in the middle and at the end of a words is pronounced as in the Scottish ‘Loch’.
Romantic Repeats Greetings - yesterday October 14 after 2pm you played ‘Prokofiev Suites from Romeo & Juliet’ in a Wells arrangement by the Flinders Quartet. I found this piece thrilling and utterly delightful. I would be very grateful if you, please, would play it again soon. Thanks.
Please ask John (Buchanan) to stop talking so much. We’ve only had one tune so far and it’s 10 past 12.
I was blown away today by Monica Trapaga on Barry O’Sullivans on air at noon today. Such a vibrant musician. A top show.
I trust he has heard of the Loch Ness Monster. He also pronounced the ‘stück’ as “stook’, ignoring the Umlaut. Yet, in the next piece he presented, he pronounced the word “Ruh” as if it had an Umlaut (“Rüh’”) when it hasn’t one. For a Schubert announcer perhaps he would be wise to do a very basic course in German pronounciation 101. Surely Schubert’s works deserve not to have their titles so terribly mangled.

Piano Sonata #5 ‘Greta’ Michael Kieran Harvey Move Records MD3452
Featuring simple songs recorded in one take symbiotically in a room, this newest recording from the band is a straight up representation of their live sound. With bassist Ed Williams and drummer Ed Rodrigues filling out the harmonic canvas, the band’s pianist Casey Golden delivers worldly modernism with his glowing attack and sweeping musical suggestions, in a remarkably coherent vision which is at once grounded and atmospheric. On the standout tracks Marbles and Mastermind, success is achieved via a telepathic output from the trio via the pianist’s softly driving phraseology and tuneful harmony. This is a band in total harmony with each other.
They incorporate modern jazz with exactly the required improvisational quotient. Throughout, while maintaining continuity of focus and artistic vision, they develop sounds that are engaging and challenging at the same time, tender and thoughtful one minute, fiery and raw the next.
The premiere recording of The Prison by Ethel Smyth provides us with a fascinating perspective on this enigmatic composer. Smyth called this unusual work a symphony for soprano, bass-baritone, chorus and orchestra, in which the music explores the final hours of a condemned prisoner’s life as he converses with his soul. (Smyth had herself spent time in prison, being sentenced for her part in a suffragist protest in 1912.) The music is very sensitive and moving, though the insertion of The Last Post towards the end may be rather cloying to some listeners. It’s thought that Smyth used this tune to
memorialise her late friend H.B. Brewster, the author of the text. A wonderful premiere recording, beautifully played and sung, on the Chandos label.
Move brings us another recording in the Michael Kieran Harvey Collection. Harvey’s Piano Sonata #5 is a work dedicated to the climate activist Greta Thunberg, bringing together Harvey’s environmentalism and musical creativity. Continuing their collaboration in The Green Brain, the CD is accompanied by a poem by Arjun von Caemmerer, Regret, which lists Australian plants and animals threatened by climate change. The new piano sonata is in five movements and the entire work has been recorded twice – once using piano and once on electronic keyboards. I prefer the piano version
but it’s quite fascinating to explore the differences between the two. The music is uncompromising, but Harvey’s piano playing is absolutely extraordinary in its virtuosity. A CD recommended to those with an interest in Australian music and music with a message.
