Although brought up a Catholic, Beethoven was a son of the Enlightenment who thought deeply about religion and preferred to fashion his own faith rather than accept any rigid dogma from the Catholic Church or any other. In the Missa solemnis, Beethoven can be seen as attempting to reconcile conventional Christian views and Enlightenment rationalism with more personal spiritual impulses. Even though he initially conceived it for Archduke Rudolph’s installation ceremony, he merged features associated with the traditional church Mass and music for the concert hall. Michael Morton-Evans discusses this apparent paradox inherent in what Beethoven regarded as his greatest work, and you can hear it as part of our Sunday Special at 3pm on Sunday 7 April, 200 years to the day after its first performance in St Petersburg.

This month marks the beginning of a season of nine Puccini operas on Wednesday evenings: Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, Edgar, and Tosca, in April, followed by Madame Butterfly, La fanciulla del West, La Rondine, Il Trittico, and Turandot in May.

Turangalîla: Olivier Messiaen’s Love-Death Symphony

It was during the 1700s that the secular began overtaking the sacred as the type of music most likely to be written down, distributed, and listened to. This displacement accelerated in subsequent centuries, to the point where the overwhelming body of music composed and listened to, including what we know as classical music, became decidedly secular. It had long ceased serving or being regarded primarily as a tool for worship and religious contemplation, having instead become a medium for personal expression and entertainment.

Not so, though, for the revered and deeply religious French composer Olivier Messiaen, born in Avignon in 1908 who spent sixty years as organist at Paris’ La Trinité church, before his death in 1992.

With most of his seventy or so works having a pronounced spiritual intent, it may seem surprising that during the mid1940s Messiaen devoted three years to a trilogy of compositions exploring the subject of love and death, and the opposition between them. Though as his biographer Robert Sherlaw Johnson points out, these works are no less spiritual on that account. For although Messiaen abandons Christian symbolism in them, ‘the concept of the Love-Death is nevertheless central to Christianity, in the sense that all true acts of love involve sacrifice, whether it be the love of God for Man through the sacrifice of the cross, or the love of man for God or for his fellow men, or the love of a man and a woman for each other.’

Sequentially the second, the Turangalîla Symphony is easily the most extensive of the trilogy, lasting for around seventy-five minutes and requiring substantial forces for its performance. It was completed in 1948 in response to a commission from Serge Koussevitsky on behalf of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was first performed by them under the young Leonard Bernstein in December of the following year.

In this work, as Johnson records, Messiaen turned principally to the myth of Tristan and Isolde, and especially to Wagner’s version of the story, in which the symbolism of the Love-Death plays such a large part. As Messiaen expressed it in a sleeve note to the work’s first recording: ‘True love is a fatal, irresistible love, transcending everything outside itself, a love such as is symbolised by the love potion of Tristan and Isolde.’

The name Turangalîla is a combination of two Sanskrit words. Turang signifies time passing as well as rhythm and movement, while lîla is literally play or amusement in an active, cosmic sense, while it can also mean love. Thus, Turangalîla becomes a song of love, a hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death.

According to Laurence Davies, this quite extraordinary work breaks completely from the Westernised idea of symphonic form, not simply by giving it a special oriental locale, but also by employing non-Western instruments and making full use of the authentic rhythmic ostinato, extended pedal points, and other devices of the East. This Eastern effect is also heightened by the use of both tuned and non-tuned percussion, and a group of keyboard instruments including piano, vibraphone and glockenspiel, which together form a small orchestra within the larger one, with sonority and functions similar to those of the Balinese gamelan. Also present is the French invention of the 1920s, the electrophonic ondes-martenot, which often dominates the orchestra with its sliding, expressive voice.

The symphony is laid out across ten movements, comprising an introduction followed by three disconnected but stylistically related groups each of three movements. The introduction sets out the two main themes, the ‘statue’ or masculine one, for brass, and the ‘flower’ or feminine one, for woodwind. In writing about his symphony, the composer also pointed to two other cyclic themes which reappear throughout, as well as various subordinate ones specific to each movement.

Considering its format, it has been queried whether the work qualifies as a symphony at all: arguably an irrelevant question for a work considered by many to be one of the greatest musical compositions of the entire twentieth century.

World of a Symphony: a symphony for strings

The 20th century Russian composer Gavriil Popov (1904-1972) shared many bonds with his compatriot Dmitri Shostakovich (19061975). They were contemporaries, born within two years of each other, and both studied at the Leningrad Conservatory. They composed precocious graduation pieces (Popov’s Chamber Symphony, Shostakovich’s Symphony no 1) which established their reputations. They wrote scorching symphonies reflecting the 1930s Soviet Union, which were banned (Popov’s first) or withdrawn before performance (Shostakovich’s fourth). And they admired each other’s music. So, it is little surprise that the two composers were friends. Popov has even been described as Shostakovich’s long-lost twin brother.

Popov composed his Symphony no 3, Heroic, for large string orchestra opus 45 in fits and starts over the turbulent years 1939 to 1946. It was originally a Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra for the film Spain, depicting the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. The film director Leo Arnshtam praised the ‘remarkable music’ which ‘fuses well with the folk song material which is so plentiful in the film’. Popov developed the film score into an orchestral suite Spain, op 28 of seven symphonic fragments, which was premiered in 1940. He returned to the Concerto grosso in 1944 and finally finished the piece in 1946, changing the title from Concerto grosso to Symphony No. 3, Heroic, op 45 and dedicating the work to Shostakovich.

Popov’s Symphony no 3 is an extraordinary achievement. In five movements and lasting 54 minutes, it is composed on an epic scale to match Beethoven’s revolutionary Eroica Symphony. Popov pits competing instrumental groups against each other, like duelling strings, showcasing the virtuosic qualities of bowed instruments. The composer divides the parts of similar string instruments into multiple voices and in so doing, weaves a rich orchestral fabric. Popov’s inventiveness, boldly pushing the boundaries of symphonic form, coupled with his compositional skill in his use of strings creates an immense effect; that of the full-scale symphonic orchestra. And this is all without trumpets, trombones, or drums! The composer explains that his choice of strings was prompted by folk song, melody, and thematic material. “Adding brass and percussion instruments to the texture of this score would completely destroy the organic perception of the style.” According to Popov, the idea of a symphony for strings was inspired by the Austrian American composer Arnold Schoenberg; “I admired his Verklärte Nacht [Transfigured Night], a symphonic poem for string orchestra … I heard his expressive melodies and realised his great ability to create emotionally hot musical forms. I felt elements of symphonism in Schoenberg’s opus.”

Popov’s Symphony no 3 premiered in 1947 to great acclaim, however the composer would soon experience further repression. In the post-war years, Zhdanovshchina, the Soviet cultural policy instigated by propagandist-in-chief Andrei Zhdanov, saw cultural purges, an extreme anti-Western bias, and tighter control of the arts. The following year, Popov and Shostakovich, among other leading composers including Prokofiev and Khachaturian, were censured by the Soviet authorities in the notorious Zhadanov Decree of 1948 for writing socalled ‘formalist’ music (art for art’s sake which did not serve the regime). The first recording of Popov’s Symphony no 3 was only made in 2008.

Popov had the raw compositional talent of Shostakovich but sadly lacked his friend’s genius in mastering the secret of artistic survival in a cruel age. For long periods after 1948, Popov wrote little of consequence while Shostakovich was composing his cycle of symphonies and string quartets. Even more shameful then, that the crushing climate of the Soviet era caused Popov’s scintillating symphony for strings to languish in oblivion until recently.

Mahler Symphony no 2: Resurrection

Advance publicity for the Mahler 2 concert in Chatswood bordered on hyperventilation: Massive!, shrieked one headline, Colossal!, trumpeted another. Thankfully, the work does justify the hype: the second symphony is one of the composer’s most popular works, in this instance promising an orchestra of 90 musicians and a choir of 100 with two soloists, and at almost 90 minutes, one of the longest in the repertoire. I had often attended concerts in the Concourse before, albeit with smaller orchestras generally providing more modest fare, so I was keen to hear how well the Concourse Concert Hall’s much-vaunted acoustics would cope, particularly with the triumphant apocalyptic chorale, one of the most glorious and powerful climaxes in all of music.

The symphony’s central theme is life and death, in particular, life after death. The first movement was originally named Totenfeier (Funeral Rites), a stormy symphonic poem to bear the hero of Mahler's recently completed First Symphony to his grave. Five years later he composed the second and third movements of what was by then destined to be a large-scale symphony. The fourth movement, featuring mezzo-soprano or contralto soloist, employs a wunder horn text concerning the struggle for faith. For the fifth, and last, movement, which adds soprano soloist and mixed chorus, Mahler found inspiration in the poem by Friederich Klopstock that he had heard at the funeral of Hans von Bülow. This was astonishing because a few years earlier when playing his new composition on piano to the famous conductor, he allegedly held his hands over his ears and said: "If that's still music, then I do not understand anything about music."

In the original score of pause between the end of the first movement and the start of the second; conductor Paul Terracini chose to bring on the soloists at this point, and position them decision considering the large number and collective firepower of

the assembled musicians. The maestro gave a brief explanation of the movements to follow, then we were off into the graceful and tender Andante moderato, recounting the story of the death and transcendent resurrection of the hero. The last three movements were played according to Mahler’s instructions without a pause, the third movement ending in a climax with, as the composer called it, a ‘death shriek'. Additional brass placed in the ‘Gods’ high above the orchestra added splendid clarity to the trumpets and horns. We then heard the ethereal voice of Celeste Haworth, mezzo-soprano, singing Urlicht (eternal light), and the very elaborate (and loud) last movement, which added soprano soloist Imogen-Faith Malfitano and mixed chorus using Biblical motifs to describe the hero’s journey to heaven.

Given the wide dynamic range of this wonderful music, from whisper-quiet to thunderous finale, the Concert Hall itself ‘performed’ extremely well, delivering a memorable experience to those privileged to be present. Lewis Cornwell’s excellent informative notes in the printed program will have added much to the enjoyment of the audience.

Beethoven’s Towering Masterpiece

Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis in D major is one of the towering masterpieces of the choral repertoire and despite being written at a time when just about everything had gone wrong with his life, Beethoven was still able to write on the manuscript: “To my God who has never deserted me.” He’d lost his hearing, his faithful beloved, and his nephew had deserted him, but still he was able to write one of the greatest pieces of religious music ever penned.

The composition of the great mass occupied Beethoven from 1818 to 1823, taking it a good four years past the occasion for which it was composed, the installation of the Archduke Rudolph of Austria, his patron, pupil, and friend, as Archbishop of Olmutz in what is now the Czech Republic. The structure of the mass reflects the composer’s reverence for the Catholic mass. Divided into five movements – Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei – each movement is designed as a meditation on faith, redemption, and the human condition.

The Kyrie, which opens the work, is a plea for mercy and forgiveness. Beethoven’s setting is characterised by its beautiful melodies, intricate counterpoint, and dramatic shifts in dynamics, evoking a sense of awe and reverence. The Gloria, which follows, is a jubilant proclamation of praise. Here the choir is given full rein and there are triumphant brass fanfares designed to display celestial splendour. Next the Credo. This is the longest and most expansive movement and could be called the heart of the work. Here, Beethoven embarks on an exploration of faith, weaving together intricate polyphony, expansive choral fugues, and poignant solo passages. Questions of belief, doubt and the mysteries of existence are all introduced in this movement.

The Sanctus is a hymn of praise and exaltation, and Beethoven’s orchestration is almost otherworldly. He sets out to paint a picture of heavenly serenity. Next follows a prayer for peace and reconciliation in the Agnus Dei. This is the most moving part of the entire work and it is clear that Beethoven was thinking here about divine grace and perhaps whether he deserved it.

The Missa Solemnis was one of only three overtly religious works that Beethoven composed, and he considered it his greatest

work. Throughout the whole mass, Beethoven’s music is marked by deep emotion and spiritual fervour, while being noted for its often-unusual orchestration. But just how original was the style? Musicologists over the years have been unable to agree. The 19th century English music analyst Sir Donald Tovey had this to say about the work: “Not even Bach or Handel can show a greater sense of space and of sonority. There is no earlier choral writing that comes so near to recovering some of the lost secrets of the style of Palestrina.”

However, the 20th century British musicologist Michael Spizer takes a different view: “Gregorian melodies, of course, continued to be used in the Mass throughout the eighteenth century, but by Beethoven’s time they were relatively rare, especially in orchestral Masses. The one composer who still used them extensively was Michael Haydn. I have little doubt that Beethoven knew such works of Michael Haydn, at that time the most popular composer of sacred music in Austria.”

Be all that as it may, nothing can diminish the power and beauty of this monumental work. As an exploration of faith, doubt, hope and humanity’s relationship with the divine it has no equal.

Keyna Wilkins: improvising from Bach and Debussy to indigenous and refugee stories

Born in the United Kingdom to a mixed heritage – English father and Australian mother – Sydney-based composer, musician, and educator, Keyna Wilkins spent her early days in a small rural village in Somerset, where she first discovered her passion for music.

Her musical odyssey began at the tender age of seven when she embarked on piano lessons, igniting a spark that would fuel her lifelong devotion to music. With only one piano teacher available in her village, Wilkins embraced the opportunity to learn and quickly demonstrated her innate talent. By the age of eight, she had added the recorder to her musical repertoire. The Wilkins family’s move to Sydney at the age of nine marked a pivotal moment in Keyna’s musical journey, as she seized every opportunity to explore new musical horizons and added the flute to her band of instruments.

At 19, Wilkins’ formal musical education took her back to the UK, where she finished a BA Music and completed a MA Flute Performance at Bristol University. Her education continued with composition at Bath University and an exchange year in Germany at Hildesheim University where she studied jazz piano. In 2016, it was back to Sydney where she completed her Master of Music Composition at Sydney Conservatorium. Along the way, she honed her skills in composition and performance, embracing diverse musical traditions, from contemporary classical to jazz, Cuban, Flamenco, tango and free improvisation, and a theatre project.

Artistically, Wilkins found her true calling in the act of composition. From her earliest works at the age of ten to her current projects, she has remained driven by a relentless desire to bring new sounds and ideas into the world. With over 60 works published by Australian niche publishing house, Wirripang, her music has captivated audiences both locally and internationally, earning her acclaim as a visionary composer with a distinctive voice.

Wilkins has been developing her unique approach to solo performance since 2017, weaving together stream-ofconsciousness improvisations with her composed pieces and reinterpretations. Utilising tools like loop pedals and visual projections, she crafts a dynamic experience for her audience, tailoring each show to the venue and attendees. Her repertoire spans diverse themes, from human rights to astronomy to nature.

Critics acclaim her Bach reinterpretations as intellectual exchanges, and her solo shows have been described as captivating blends of jazz, Debussy, and flamenco. Notably, Wilkins has collaborated with refugees detained in Australia for nine years, setting their poetry and art to original compositions. Her ninth album, Set Me Free, co-created with detained poet-artist Jalal Mahamede, serves as a poignant testament to their shared experiences.

The celestial landscapes of outer space serve as a profound muse for Wilkins, who often integrates NASA footage into her performances. Her improvisations, born from a wealth of musical encounters, aim to unify disparate influences into a cohesive expression, fostering emotional resonance and meditative states.

Beyond her solo work, Wilkins has co-founded the extraordinary indigenous-jazz fusion duo Yulugi, and breakout space-music Ephemera Ensemble, both celebrated for their innovation and virtuosity. With a diverse portfolio spanning multiple genres and collaborations, Wilkins continues to push the boundaries of musical expression.

High Five – with pianist and composer Matthew Thomson

Matthew Thomson is an award-winning pianist, composer and educator based in Sydney. Having won the prestigious National Jazz Awards in 2021, he continues to build a profile as one of Australia’s prominent jazz pianists. In 2023, Thomson released his album Torque with coleader and drummer Alex Hirlian under the band name Tourismo on ABC Jazz.

When did jazz first enter your life, and which musicians influenced you?

Although I started piano at four, I gravitated towards syncopation and improvisation quickly, partly because I listened to the music my mother loved. This included Steely Dan, Jamiroquai, Supertramp, and other bands that had jazz influences. This led to me studying with Roc Koren from the age of seven. Roc introduced me to jazz harmony and took me through the ABRSM Jazz Course which gave me incredible opportunities to play gigs at a very young age. These gigs gave me the confidence to perform and improvise in public.

I started listening to jazz once in high school, while studying with the American pianist, John Harkins. John introduced me to the bebop greats including Dexter Gordon, Mulgrew Miller, Bill Evans and Bud Powell, and taught me how to transcribe solos and tell stories as an improviser. While I was absorbing the bebop language, it wasn’t until I discovered Robert Glasper and his album Double Booked that everything ‘clicked’. I remember thinking, this is who I wanted to sound like: the language was more modern with a hip hop sensibility and an odd-meter time feel.

When did you decide on a musical career, and where did you study?

After finishing high school, I was thinking of pursuing engineering or architecture. While I auditioned for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, my university preferences were set up and I didn’t even find out if I had been accepted. John Harkins found out at the last minute I had been, and so I decided to pursue music and have never looked back. After finishing at the con, I was inspired by a wave of musicians who had travelled to the United States to pursue their master’s degrees. I decided to study at the New England Conservatory in Boston, as it has an incredible jazz and classical faculty. I could legally gig under the CPT program there and I could interact and perform with Berklee College of Music students a few blocks away.

You’ve performed in various ensembles and with jazz vocalists. How does each experience differ for you?

No matter what genre, musicians must have a certain awareness and respect for the music they are playing and the ensemble they are performing with. It is easy to play jazz licks in a pop setting, but the strongest players know how to musically adapt to the group. I’m fortunate that my musical upbringing was listening to singers, so I know how to play a supportive role. Singers have this natural freedom to sing what they hear, so I learn a lot when comping underneath vocalists.

Ultimately, when playing with a group you are less familiar with, everyone must meet each other on common ground. When you play more frequently in certain groups, you can add more of your own sound, and this is where the musical language is shared.

What is your current musical project, and how has it evolved and progressed so far?

My current musical project is the Josh Meader Trio. It originally started as a quartet, but as we discovered our sound, I began to play synth bass. It gave us a niche as there are few trios with our instrumental setup. While the trio is under Josh’s name, we have co-written the music together, apart from one or two tunes. The first tunes were in the jazz genre, and our latest influences tend towards more progressive rock, particularly with our production choices.

You are home alone on a Sunday night. What is some of the music you would choose to listen to for relaxation?

I might listen to pop music on the radio, to be honest. With whatever music I listen to I can learn something from it. While pop music is simplistic harmonically, I find the production side very interesting. After having influences like Robert Glasper, James Francies, Taylor Eigsti, Hiatus Kaiyote and Tame Impala, I believe this is where the music is heading anyway.

Contemporary Greek Jazz

A 2024 list of contemporary jazz high achievers reveals a surprisingly strong presence of Greek born contributors such as trumpet/flugelhorn player Andreas Polyzogopoulos and the double bassists Mihalis Kalkanis and Petros Klampanis. Theirs is music inspired by ancient mythical figures, nature, and traditional Greek music and dance. Apart from commonly used jazz instruments, its sounds might also come from the ancient Cretan lyra, the oud, the sometimes-ethereal sounds of a synthesizer, or the human voice.

Andreas Polyzogopoulos was born in 1980 in Samiko, southwestern Greece, taking up guitar at the age of ten. While studying jazz as a 20-year-old in Athens he became enamoured with the music of Miles Davis, and in 2000 switched to playing trumpet. He later studied under Markus Stockhausen and Paolo Fresu.

Polyzogopoulos' playing has a warm ethereal quality, sometimes characterized by timbre variations, the use of electronic effects and sparseness. He has recorded some 80 albums to date, but surprisingly only four as leader. His latest recording Petrichor released in 2023 is comprised entirely of his original compositions, and is an outstanding achievement. He explains that the name Petrichor is especially significant to him. It is a Greek word describing the scent from fallen rain on the parched ground of a Greek summer, signifying the coming of autumn. Polyzogopoulos associates these thoughts with memories of a petrichor at the end of summer 2003, when he was returning from a student workshop with Paolo Fresu in Sardinia. For the first time he could see his future pathway as a trumpet player.

Polyzogopoulos' double bassist of choice on Petrichor was Petros Klampanis, who was born in 1981 on the Ionian island of Zakynthos and first discovered music as a four-year-old, playing his older sister's keyboard. He later sang in local choirs but put his music aside to study mechanical engineering. At 20 he discontinued this to take up musical studies in Athens, furthering his studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 2008 he completed a master's degree in composition at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York.

In 2011 Klampanis recorded the first of his six albums to date as leader. His music is mainly self-composed and melody-driven with traditional or classical elements. His recordings reached a new peak with the 2022 release Tora (meaning ‘now’), a collation

of primarily traditional Greek songs played by an ensemble which includes enchanting folk voices and the lute-like oud and laouto instruments. With its musical choices, the album recognizes that Greece is a confluence of Mediterranean and Balkan cultures.

Mihalis Kalkanis, Athenian by birth, is a double bassist/composer whose music is experimental and unpredictable, often benefitting from skilful use of synthesizer and voice loops. Kalkanis secured his place in Greek contemporary music with his 2015 release World echoes in Athens. This was based on his in-situ field recordings of the singing and chanting of (illegal?) immigrants in secret ‘temples’ within Athens. To these, Kalkanis added his music to stunning effect.

Of further note is Kalkanis' latest recording Emotions, a personal expression around matters of life and relationships. It was featured in the Jazz Sketches program of Wednesday 27th March and is replayable on demand at 2mbsfinemusicsydney.com.

The (Big) Band after Swing

In Ken Raphael’s discourse on the Big Bands After Swing last month, he discussed the impact of the war on the musicians, the demise of the dancehall, the development of smaller bands, and the drive for the music to provide greater individual freedom of expression, stepping away from the stereotyped chord changes that dominated the propulsive dance rhythms of swing.

And then there was Dizzy ...

Dizzy Gillespie started on his career with Teddy Hill’s Orchestra and joined Cab Calloway in 1939. He began his ‘Chinese Music’ experiments, always trying to break out from the bonds of swing. By the time he was fired in 1941 he had met Charlie Parker, with whom he joined Earl Hines’ Big Band, and then Billy Eckstine.

In 1945 he teamed up with Parker to make recordings and by then had developed his own bebop style. This led to the formation in 1946 of his orchestra that lasted for

four years. He had as sidemen not just the original four members of the Modern Jazz Quartet but JJ Johnson, Yusuf Lateef, and the young John Coltrane. This was the most successful period for bebop, but it never became the ‘fad’ they wanted. Perhaps it was because it was music to listen to, not dance to, that it never captured the audience that swing had.

Gillespie led big bands from 1956, when he was leader of a US State Department tour of the Middle East and earned the nickname ‘Ambassador of Jazz’. He took a band to the 1957 Newport jazz festival where he recorded a live album. He had a major influence on Afro-Cuban music working with Chano Pozo. Together they wrote and produced Manteca, a foundational tune of Afro-Cuban jazz, and in the 1980’s Dizzy led the United Nations Orchestra. He ceased recording and touring in 1992.

Bebop held the attention of musicians anxious to break away from swing during the last half of the 1940s and did so through the work of small groups, quartets, or quintets. These arrangements took the music further into what became ‘Cool Jazz’ or ‘West Coast Jazz’.

The playing of larger bands such as those led by Gillespie and Stan Kenton was influenced by bebop, and they soon began experimenting with Afro-Cuban rhythms based upon those popularised in New York by the Machito

Orchestra under trumpeter Mario Bauza. The growth of Afro-Cuban jazz continued with vigour in the 1950s. In December 1950 producer Norman Granz recorded the successful Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite, which featured the Machito Orchestra along with soloists Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Buddy Rich on drums, Flip Phillips on tenor, and Harry (‘Sweets’) Edison on trumpet, with ar rangements by Arturo (‘Chico’) O’Farrill.

Meanwhile Gil Evans and Miles Davis with Gerry Mulligan and others collaborated on forming a nonet in 1948. The size allowed the arranger to achieve a more orchestral sound bringing horns and tuba to the more traditional quintet of trumpets, saxophones, piano, drums and bass. The nonet played at The Royal Roost as the intermission band at a Count Basie concert in August 1948. In 1949 and 1950 Capitol Records recorded 12 numbers that would form the nucleus of The Birth of the Cool which was reissued in 1957 as an LP.

The group returned to the Royal Roost later in September 1948, and recordings from 4 September and 18 Septem ber 1948 were included on the 1998 Complete Birth of the Cool CD. There was a further short residency the following year at the Clique Club, but the nonet was not a financial success, and disbanded. In 1949 Davis had a contract with Capitol to record twelve sides for 78 rpm singles. He reformed the nonet to record three sessions in January and April 1949 and March 1950. Davis, Konitz, Mulligan, and Barber were the only musicians who played on all three sessions, though the instrumental line-up was constant (excepting some omission of piano).

This nonet is so important in the history of jazz that it must be included in any study of (big) bands after swing. It would be the progenitor of the concert jazz band or jazz orchestras with which the next article in this series will be concerned, although as always, the exceptions are Duke Ellington and Count Basie who led jazz orchestras long before, and long after, the nonet assembled and dis banded.

Heavenly Mozart

Mozart is one of the world’s favourite classical composers. His Piano concerto no 23, K488, and Symphony no 41, K551, Jupiter, are two of his most popular compositions, with a dozen interpretations of the concerto and two dozen of the symphony in 2MBS’s collection alone. So why listen to this album? It could be that these two works have lost, through familiarity and being taken out of their historical context, some of their freshness and capacity to surprise.

This performance of the concerto, however, sees Neal Peres da Costa playing fortepiano rather than the more usual piano. It is influenced by interpretations, preserved on piano rolls, by 19th century pianists including Carl Reinecke, an authority on Mozart performance. The concerto is notable for the beauty and originality of its orchestration: without oboes, trumpets, and timpani, it gives some prominence to a pair of clarinets and looks forward to the composer’s beloved Clarinet quintet and Clarinet concerto.

On his newest recording, the Sydney-based vocalist offers an appealing selection from The Great American Songbook in his inimitable style, accompanied by some of this city’s best musicians. Although it’s impossible to avoid the tried, true and over-recorded in an album with this title, Arthur utilises his subtle vocal and live performance skills with taste and maturity, proving that he can cover just about anything across this expansive spectrum with flair. The inclusion of his composition with Casper Tromp, You with Me, with a fine solo from the guitarist Jim Pennell, is a bonus. My Romance (Rodgers/Hart) is covered swayingly, and features the saxophone playing of Craig Walters. Great kudos should be given to all the other musicians featured – Peter Locke (piano), Craig Scott (double bass), and Andrew Dickson (drums) – and the producer and recording engineer Michael Bainbridge for his superior effort in the recording of a live album in the testing environment of a jazz club. The album concludes with another highlight

and what it will do nearly a hundred years later’, also benefits from its historically informed performance, with conductor Rachael Beesley suggesting theatrical or operatic influences as a way into the musical narrative.

The liner notes by Beesley and Peres Da Costa are exemplary.

Overall, Gregg Arthur delivers an engaging effort from a fine artist of the genre with his collaborators, whose talents shine throughout, with no ‘fake makes’ happening here.

The 2MBS world music presenter speaks to Laurie Smith

What brought you to 2MBS Fine Music Sydney?

A friend encouraged me to volunteer, and I’ve been a presenter of the Whirled Wide program on Sundays at 1pm since 2014. I enjoy casting the net wide when choosing what to play on the show which aims to showcase diverse music from cultures around the world, both traditional and modern.

This fits perfectly with the deep love of world music I have developed over the past couple of decades. Even though the ‘world music’ or ‘global’ genre distinction is somewhat maligned, I love what it stands for: cross cultural collaboration and unlikely fusions between musical traditions. I also love the blending of contemporary with traditional styles, and of course, the instruments. It’s fascinating to learn about and appreciate the craftsmanship of artists who play traditional instruments and by doing so, keep their culture alive.

Name some of your personal music favourites

I don’t play an instrument though I have always loved music, particularly string music, and especially enjoy hearing live music played by exceptional artists. Favourites can change over time but some of my standouts are:

Chavela Vargas, to whom I was introduced in Mexico by Eduardo, a teacher who took us in when we were backpackers decades ago and shared his national heroine with us. I’ve followed her ever since.

The two albums by the Touré-Raichel Collective, The Paris Session, and The Tel Aviv Session. The improvisational works by Mali’s Vieux Farka-Touré and Israel’s Raichel Idan are deeply inspiring, and they’ve produced timeless beautiful music that embodies a fusion of cultures.

The Garifuna Collective started by the late Andy Palacio. This important project instilled a pride in culture amongst the Garifuna people who live in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Belize. The music is wonderful, but I also value how much good has come from this.

At present, I am loving works by the Jerusalem East West Orchestra. They combine eastern instruments such as the oud and ney flute with more familiar western instruments. They have been releasing music in the newly opened National Library in Jerusalem and highlighting each orchestra member in short videos that are beautifully produced and honour each artist’s individuality and artistry.

Are there special performances that stay forever in your memory?

Many! But a standout was at WOMADelaide in 2020 when Senegal-born griot kora master Seckou Keita and Welsh classical harpist Catrin Finch played an afternoon concert. The combination of the double kora with 22 strings on each neck and the 47-string harp saw Mandinka rhythms mix and interweave seamlessly with Welsh traditional tunes, and was sublime. The audience lay back on the grass, looking up at the sky, letting the wondrous music by Keita and Finch simply wash over us.

What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the station?

I appreciate how professionally run 2MBS is and the lovely people I get to meet at the station. But perhaps most of all, the feeling of sharing music I enjoy with other people.

Manon Lescaut is to be educated in a convent. Travelling by coach with her brother, they stop at an inn, where Des Grieux, a student, falls in love with her on sight. Discovering there is a plan for her to be abducted by a wealthy old official, he persuades her to elope with him to Paris. Their relationship becomes difficult when he runs out of money and Geronte, a wealthy elderly roué, makes Manon his mistress. When she discovers that Des Grieux is about to take holy orders, she reaffirms her love for him. Wanting money, she encourages Des Grieux to gamble. They are both charged with cheating. He is released, but she is sentenced to transportation as a dissolute woman. Des Grieux signs on as a crew member on the ship taking her to New Orleans. They both escape on arrival and go in search of an English colony. She dies in his arms from heat and exhaustion.

Rodolfo, Marcello, Colline and Schaunard lead an impoverished existence, their poems and canvases sometimes buying food, but more often providing fuel for the fire. Love comes to Rodolfo when Mimi comes to borrow a light, and to Marcello when Musetta decides to leave her elderly lover and return to him. However, Mimi and Rodolfo separate because of his jealousy and Marcello leaves Musetta because of her tantrums. Colline and Schaunard join Rodolfo and Marcello and they make merry over a meagre meal. Musetta brings Mimi who is dying. Marcello hurries away for a doctor and Colline sells his overcoat to buy medicine. Mimi and Rodolfo recall their love as Mimi dies. Jacquelin, an artist, is on the run because of his political caricatures during Robespierre’s ‘reign of terror’. He and his lover, Ernestine, are planning to escape from France and need passports from Colonel Furieux. Furieux refuses to issue them when Ernestine is delayed by an engagement in the theatre as the goddess of reason. He threatens to execute Jacquelin if she does not come. Ernestine’s carriage is surrounded by a drunken mob. They seize Bonhomme and mock marry him to the goddess of reason. The Countess Mathilde is trying to escape but has no passport. Bonhomme declares that she is the expected prima donna, Ernestine. Jacquelin, hoping to save himself, introduces her to Colonel Furieux as Ernestine. Furieux invites the Countess to dinner with the officers where she is to choose her cavalier. All except Captain Robert line up to be chosen, but it is he whom she chooses. Later Furieux makes advances to her but Robert comes to her aid. Furieux sees his caricature in Jacquelin’s sketchbook. Afraid for his life, Jacquelin admits that the Countess is not Ernestine. Furieux orders the Countess to be arrested as an aristocrat. Robert stands by her but is revealed as a marquis. Bonhomme, as a delegate to the Convention, declares that he is arresting them and taking them away for the severest punishment and threatens to arrest Furieux. Ernestine, as the goddess of reason, sways the crowd’s opinion in favour of Bonhomme’s action. Ernestine gives the passports which Jacquelin had obtained for her and himself to the Countess and Robert who escape and later marry, as do Jacquelin and Ernestine.

In a small Flemish village in 1302, Edgar is torn between his infatuation with the passionate gypsy, Tigrana, and the pure love of his sweetheart, Fidelia. He elopes with Tigrana, but eventually tires of her and joins the army. He falls in battle and his body, fully dressed in armour, is borne back to his village where his great bravery is acclaimed. However, a monk, who claims to have heard Edgar’s final confession, speaks of Edgar’s dissolute life and hints of more heinous crimes. All except Fidelia curse him and fall upon the suit of armour only to find it empty. The monk reveals himself as Edgar who has now overcome his passion for Tigrana. As he embraces Fidelia, Tigrana stabs her. Tigrana is arrested. Edgar falls weeping onto Fidelia’s lifeless body as the villagers kneel in prayer.

Famous soprano, Floria Tosca, is the jealous lover of an artist, Mario Cavaradossi. While Mario is painting an altarpiece in a church, he helps a revolutionary comrade, Cesare Angelotti, escape from the police. The evil Baron Scarpia, chief of police, arrests Mario on suspicion of assisting the fugitive to escape. Desiring Tosca, Scarpia promises her lover's liberty in return for her favours. An angry Tosca agrees. Scarpia orders a fake execution, but, when he approaches Tosca, she stabs and kills him. At dawn the execution takes place but, in the meantime, Scarpia has changed his orders. Tosca is devastated when she finds that the execution was real and her lover is dead. She leaps to her death from the castle ramparts.
