Although we can’t deliver our emerging artist programs this year, we are taking the time to catch up with our alumni over the coming months. This month we interview 2017 Young Composer Award winner Ella Macens (page 6). I hope you enjoy these interviews. We receive a great deal of positive feedback daily - for which we are very grateful, letting us know that you are reading and listening at home. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family well during these uncertain times. Despite the very many challenges that we have encountered over the last six months, we have persevered and found new ways of broadcasting in a COVID-19 inspired digital revolution. I am proud to have led an extremely diverse team of staff and volunteers through a significant period of change management with a focus on digital transformation in 2020. This hard work has prepared us to be on a level playing field with our peers in a competitive market. I hope you have been enjoying our Supporter Platform and that you too join me in thanking our wonderful team for their collective dedication and loyalty during these difficult times. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated volunteers listed below who were involved in delivering this months program. Regards, Rebecca Beare

Song of his People The Life and Legacy of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Written by Paul Cooke
The decision to devise a program of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s music was made quite some time ago but, fittingly, this article is being written in the wake of the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. Coleridge-Taylor was born on 15 August 1875 in London, the son of an English woman and a Sierra Leonean man. The latter was a medical student who returned to Sierra Leone upon graduating, unaware that he had fathered a child. Coleridge-Taylor was brought up by his mother and her extended family, who recognised his musical talents. From 1890 he attended the Royal College of Music, initially as a violinist but graduating in composition and conducting. His composition teacher was Charles Villiers Stanford, who regarded him as one of his most brilliant students. During this time, he composed piano and clarinet quintets and other, mostly chamber, works, and he twice gained the Lesley Alexander composition prize. ColeridgeTaylor did experience incidents of racism both at school and at the RCM and, as a consequence, suffered from insecurity and shyness, but he was fortunate that he was able to study in an environment that recognised and furthered his abilities. In 1898 his cantata Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast was premiered to a rapturous reception from critics and public alike. Choral music was inclined to be religious or serious, but this was regarded as a breath of fresh air characterised as “a big,

lovely orchestral sound buoying up the excitement of a massed bank of voices singing a melody which flowed more or less continuously”. Its success brought about many commissions for further cantatas (including a couple of sequels), none of which had quite the same impact. Nevertheless, the Hiawatha trilogy was staged at the Royal Albert Hall every year from 1924 until the outbreak of World War II: families would come to see it “in fancy dress with feather headdresses, embroidered tunics, and their hair in plaits”.
05
By this time, Coleridge-Taylor had become increasingly aware of his heritage. He had been entranced by the spirituals of the visiting African-American Fisk Jubilee Singers, and had met the AfricanAmerican poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. These influences were incorporated into numerous compositions: “What Brahms has done for the Hungarian folk music, Dvorák for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the Norwegian, I have tried to do for these Negro melodies.” He made three visits to the United States, where he was fêted. African-Americans had only been freed from slavery in the 1860s and Coleridge-Taylor’s achievements, rare among people of African origin in the West, were a model to which they might aspire if they were permitted entrance to musical institutions.
New York orchestral players dubbed Coleridge-Taylor the ‘African Mahler’ in acknowledgement of his conducting abilities. In compositional terms, however, the melodic and rhapsodic traits of Dvorák are a more appropriate comparison and can be discerned in his last major work, the Violin Concerto. It was premiered in Connecticut in June 1912, but the composer was unable to attend. He died of pneumonia in September of that year; his funeral featured a wreath in the shape of Africa, sent by the ‘sons and daughters’ of West Africa resident in London. Saturday 15 August at 8pm
In Conversation with Ella Macens Krystal Li and Mona Omar speak to emerging Sydney composer Ella Macens Written by Krystal Li and Mona Omar Photos by Darwin Gomez
A lot has happened since you won the Fine Music Young Composer Award in 2017. What have been some career highlights from the past three years? Wow, so much has happened since that time! Interviews like this one are a nice opportunity to sit and reflect. At the time of winning the Fine Music Young Composer Award I was in my second year of a Master of Music (Composition) degree, working with a collection of Australia’s most outstanding musicians and ensembles as part of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s inaugural Composing Women Program. One of these ensembles was the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for whom I was composing my second orchestral piece titled The Space Between Stars. In 2018 the work was premiered by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, and in 2019 the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performed the work in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall! The Space Between Stars has since been released on ABC Classics CD Women of Note Volume 2 (read Paul Cooke’s review of the album on page 43), which marks the first commercial release of my music! I was in an Uber driving through the innerwest the first time I heard it! The driver didn’t believe me when I said it was my music (I must admit, even I was caught off guard!). He wasn’t satisfied until he viewed my website for proof.

You draw on a range of influences for your music. Can you tell us about these influences and how they impact your compositions? My Latvian heritage is very inspiring and influential in my compositions. I grew up surrounded by Latvian folk music and Baltic choral music. My Latvian identity unwaveringly weaves its way into most of my works. I am also equally inspired by my love of indie-pop, postrock, minimalist classical and electronic, and ambient music. Nearly all of my works originally began as pop songs at the piano with sung lyrics and melodies which I then orchestrated out into a more classical context. On a broader level I am very influenced by nature, spirituality, yoga philosophies and my own personal experiences of suffering and chronic illness. Composing has become my outlet for processing these experiences and opens a space to find stillness in chaos, security in uncertainty, and light in darkness.
What kind of stories do you like to tell with your music? The real, honest ones. My works have always explored personal events or experiences taking place at the time of composing a work, and over the past few years more specifically these have been deeply centred around notions of healing as a result of my experiences living with chronic lymes disease. My works tell stories of the courage witnessed in others, the grief of losing loved ones, the beauty of nature, the magic of landscapes and the mystery of the unknown. The Space Between Stars for example, in all of its depth, intensity and sensitivity, was born out of my fascination with the night sky, constellations and the great unknown that surrounds it. Whilst I was composing this work, my grandfather Artōrs passed away and a very dear friend was diagnosed with cancer. The piece then organically became more dignified, solemn and sentimental as it explored notions of disbelief, grief and longing. I am currently writing a new work for the Flinders Quartet titled A Love Worth Fighting For. This will be my first piece composed specifically to explore my relationship with someone else, in this case a very special friend with whom my life parted earlier this Photo by xxxxxxxxxxx year How do you think the events of this year have affected the classical music industry in Australia? Gosh, I think the full extent of this will continue to unfold for years to come. What I do know is that we are a strong, fierce community with the courage to take risks and be bold in our gestures, and we will find a way back to one another and to our concert halls. Our supporters haven’t gone anywhere - they are cheering us on whether we are holding concerts via Zoom or not, and the crowds will roar when venues reopen and we can revel in the joy and thrill of live music once again. The Australian music industry more broadly is bursting with vivacity and charm, from the performing artists to the producers, publicists and the production teams that bring it all to life. Whilst we have each other we are strong. I only wish we had more faith in the Government to support us as we build ourselves back up after such a challenging time. Thursday 20 August at 8am

Programming in the Time of COVID Snapshots of 1920 and 1820 Written by Nicky Gluch and Paul Cooke
One of the highlights of working on the Programming Committee at Fine Music Sydney is devising the special anniversary programs that will go to air each month. It’s our opportunity to celebrate birthdays of composers, premieres of works, unique occasions, all guided by the calendar. So, what to do when COVID- 19 threw a spanner into the schedule? Well, with all the talk of the similarity between this pandemic and the Spanish Flu of 1918-20, we started wondering what Fine Music could have (metaphorically) broadcast 100 years ago? And what about 200? For 1920, we have limited ourselves to looking at some of the Australian composers whose works were composed or performed in Sydney, usually at the Town Hall or the Con. Benno Moiseiwitsch, one of a significant number of artists to tour Australia that year, performed Dierdre’s Lament, a piano composition dedicated to him by its composer, Roy Agnew, on 26 August. Earlier that month, Moiseiwitsch’s Australian-born wife, violinist Daisy Kennedy, had played The Old Chinese Folk Song by Eugene Goossens: he was not Australian but his music may have been promoted by other Belgian musicians active in Sydney, and he did go on to play a seminal role in Australian music in the 1940s and 1950s. There were other composers active in 1920 who are much better known for their later work: John Antill, composer of Corroboree, wrote and provided designs for a ‘lyric masque’, testament to his dual careers as musician and mechanical draughtsman; Arthur Benjamin, famous for the Jamaican Rumba of 1938, was very active composing and performing instrumental, chamber and orchestral music. William G. James, later to achieve recognition for his Australian Christmas Carols, wrote an operetta; and May Brahe, whose Bless This House was published in 1927, composed and had performed numerous works for voice and piano. Brahe was one of a significant number of women whose compositions were being performed at this time.
08
For 1820, it was a matter more of determining what classical music colonists may have been familiar with: the first public concert in Sydney didn’t take place until 1826, when Tempest Margaret Paul sang Thomas Arne’s soprano showcase, The Soldier Tir’d. It is probable than the music of Arne and of Charles Dibdin, active in London’s Drury Lane, was well known to many settlers. We do know that the First Fleet surgeon George Worgan (son of John Worgan, who was a friend of Handel and performer at Vauxhall Gardens) brought a piano (later given to Elizabeth Macarthur) with him on the HMS Sirius, with a likely repertoire of Mozart, Haydn, early Beethoven, Scottish music and lighter pieces. Matthew Flinders was an accomplished flautist familiar with the music of Pleyel, Rosetti, Hoffmeister and Deviennes. Not only free settlers were interested in music. In 1796, the ex-convict Robert Sidaway staged William Shield’s The Poor Soldier, the first opera performed in Sydney. And in 1820, the recently arrived convict François Girard set himself up as a dance master specialising in the quadrille, examples of which were composed locally in the years that followed. To hear a selection of these works, tune in to Saturday & Sunday Morning Music during the month of August. Wondering which musicians were affected by the Spanish Flu? Look out for November’s edition of Fine Music magazine!

A Life in Music Remembering cellist Lynn Harrell Written by Nicky Gluch Photo courtesy of Lynn Harrell
“My best performances are when the instrument is just part of me, when I’m still utilizing the mechanics of the box [but it’s just] a stop-gap between what’s inside me and what I want to communicate, when I feel what the music is trying to say.” To read interviews with Lynn Harrell is to encounter a deep, musical soul. The son of musicians, Harrell was raised, in a way not uncommon to the 1940s, at an emotional arm’s length. It was his childhood cello teacher, Lev Aronson, who thus inspired in him a love for music and for life. Aronson, a Holocaust survivor, was to be a profound influence on Harrell’s musical sensibilities, teaching him to harness the cello’s subtleties as well as its strengths; in 1994, Harrell received the opportunity to honour Aronson when he performed at the first official commemoration of the Holocaust by the Holy See. Harrell was orphaned at the tender age of 18. His late father, baritone Mack Harrell, had been one of the founders of the Aspen Music Festival and through his connections, Harrell was able to audition for the Cleveland Orchestra. In many ways the orchestra became his adolescent home, and after only two years, Harrell was promoted to principal cellist. He held the position until 1971, before embarking on a solo and teaching career. It was through his teaching that Harrell met his second wife, Helen Nightengale. Together, they founded HEARTbeats, an organisation that uses music to help children better cope with, and recover from, the challenges of poverty and war. Aside from this voluntary act, Nightengale and Harrell also collaborated on the film Cello, about an aging cellist who suffers from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). That Harrell would take a thespian turn in his 70s was evidence of a man who saw seniority as a time for new opportunities. His body had been slowing, and he had planned to retire at the end of the season, before COVID cut it short. A month later, Harrell died at his home. We remember him at a time when the world could not.

Zyrphée sings of her love for Zélindor wishing that a dream that she had would come true. She recounts how she saw him turning rocks and trees into singing and dancing nymphs. Zélindor, still invisible, orders the rocks and trees to become nymphs who sing and dance to entertain Zyrphée. She appeals to Zélindor to reveal himself and protests that she will always love him. He explains that he must remain invisible because Fate has decreed that, once she sees him, she must marry him or reject him, and she will no longer be attractive to anyone else. Zyrphée remains eager to see him, and now, convinced of her love, Zélindor appears before her. On seeing him, Zyrphée loves him even more and asks him never to disappear again. Harmonia Mundi HMC 902088 3:22 Believing her husband Emperor Claudius has died, Agrippina plots to install Nerone, son of her first marriage, on the throne. But Claudius has been saved by his general Ottone and has promised him the throne. Agrippina discovers that Ottone, loving Poppæa, does not want to rule. Knowing Claudius also desires Poppæa, Agrippina tells her that Ottone has promised her to Claudius in order to get the throne and Poppæa, furious at this treachery, confronts Claudius. But seeing Ottone’s grief, she suspects he is innocent and reveals Agrippina’s plot. Nerone then declares his love for her, while Agrippina convices Claudius to punish Ottone by giving Nerone the throne. Poppæa, reconciled with Ottone, hides him in her bedroom, where Nerone arrives to woo her, only to be overheard by Claudius, whom she has also concealed. Nerone is punished, the two lovers rejoice and Claudius thwarts Agrippina’s plot by remaining emperor. Respighi, O. Symphonic poem: Fountains of Rome (1917). Philharmonia O/Yan Pascal Tortelier. Decca 436 810-2 1:24 Princess Ida has founded a women's university and teaches that women are superior to men and should rule in their stead. Prince Hilarion had been betrothed to Princess Ida in infancy and his father, King Hildebrand, has stated that he will go to war against King Gama if his daughter Ida doesn’t appear when they visit the court. Hilarion sneaks into the university with two friends, Cyril and Florian, aiming to collect his bride. They disguise themselves as women students, but are soon discovered. When Ida falls into a stream, she is rescued by Hilarion but she condemns him and his friends to death for breaching the sanctity of the university. King Hildebrand arrives with Ida’s brothers in chains. He tells Ida that if she doesn’t become Hilarion’s wife, he will execute her brothers. Ida mobilises her students to go to war but they are too afraid. Her father, King Gama, says that he has been treated with great luxury by King Hildebrand and suggests that Hilarion and his friends should fight it out with Ida’s three brothers

The Classical Guitar Society, Sydney An overview of the Society’s history Written by Darryl Rule Photos courtesy of The Classical Guitar Society
The Classical Guitar Society Sydney (CGS) celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2016, with over 150 members, an over-subscribed Summer School, a CGS Orchestra and Friends Extravaganza and an international concert program. CGS has a collection of fine handmade guitars, a well-stocked library of publications and CDs, and a monthly broadcast slot on Fine Music Sydney. It’s fair to say that the society has become one of the most active of its kind in Australia. The society began in 1991 with a handful of people meeting in Hornsby, Sydney, as the North Shore Guitar Society. With increasing numbers joining from all over the Greater Sydney region, it was decided that the collective should be called the Classical Guitar Society Sydney (CGS).
Photo courtesy of The Classical Guitar Society
The first concert hosted by the CGS was the Sydney Guitar Quartet in October 1991. The quartet comprised members who later became big names not only in the society circle, but in the greater Australian musical landscape. Christopher Keane, currently President of the society, Raffaele and Janet Agostino, whose involvement with the society is beyond measure, with Raffaele as Artistic Director, and Janet running the ensemble program of the society. The other member of the quartet member was Richard Charlton, who is well known to not only guitar enthusiasts but also to classical music lovers everywhere in Australia — his contribution to the society has been immense.

The society has always
prided itself on being a
breeding ground for young
talent. The monthly meetings
always finish up with a playlist, which is a perfect opportunity for teachers to let their young students practice performing their pieces, useful for exam preparation
The society is well regarded locally and internationally, particularly through its Summer School event, which began as a two-day course and subsequently expanded into its present fiveday format in 1995. The annual event attracts entrants of all levels from all over Australia, New Zealand, and even a few from further afield including the UK and the USA. Photo courtesy of The Classical Guitar Society
From the earliest days, the Classical Guitar Society Sydney hosted performances from both local and international artists, some of whom are legends. A young Slava Grigoryan attracted an audience of over 200, which is almost unheard of nowadays! Performers who have graced the stage for society concerts include (amongst many others) William Kannenigiser (USA), Carlos Bonell (UK), Pavel Steidl (Czech), Denis Azabagic (USA), Vincent Lindsey-Clark (England) and, of course, Australians Timothy Kain and Dr Harold Gretton. Becoming a breeding ground for young talent has been a proud achievement for the society. Monthly meetings finish with a playlist, providing an opportunity for teachers to let their young students practise performing, which is useful exam preparation. By carefully nurturing young talent, the society’s alumni is impressive, with youngsters to professionals conquering overseas stages, winning competitions and graduating with postgraduate degrees from some of the finest music institutions in the world.
Until April 2020, the CGS met monthly in Crows Nest. Like all public gatherings around the world, these meetings were put on hold due to the health crisis and potential dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic. The society has moved to an online format and members now have the opportunity to submit video recordings of their performances for ‘Virtual Playlist’ hosted on YouTube. This initiative has provided the means to ensure that the society can continue to do what it has always done best — to create a platform where enthusiasts of the classical guitar can get together and support, contribute and disseminate ideas, performances, and discussions of the queen of the plucked instruments, the classical guitar. Sullivan Before Gilbert A deep, musical soul Written by Chris Blower
Janzig/England / Alamy Stock Photo
Sir Arthur Sullivan is famous the world over as the composer who joined with the librettist W.S. Gilbert to create the fourteen Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Lesser known is that Sullivan was recognised for his serious music before he ever thought of composing comic works. Born in 1842, Sullivan showed musical talent from an early age. At the age of 11, he became a chorister at the Chapel Royal and, in 1856, was awarded the first Mendelssohn Scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music followed by the Leipzig Conservatory. It was in Leipzig that, inspired by Mendelssohn’s music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sullivan composed incidental music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which he conducted at his graduation. After his return to London, the work was performed at the Crystal Palace, to huge acclaim. Shortly afterwards, Sullivan began writing an opera, The Sapphire Necklace. It was, however, never performed, and only a couple of vocal numbers and the Overture have Tony Smith / Alamy Stock Photo
survived. To earn a living, Sullivan thus turned to writing songs and hymns, a profitable endeavour in the Victorian era. He also wrote incidental music for theatres, and choral and orchestral works for provincial music festivals. One such work was composed for the Birmingham Music Festival: a masque based on the visit in 1575 of Queen Elizabeth I to the home of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. The music of Kenilworth very clearly signals the brand of tuneful music for which Sullivan was to be so famous later. A further effort to establish himself as a serious orchestral composer resulted in the composition of a symphony. It followed a visit in 1863 to Ireland, where his father was born. Sullivan wrote to his mother, “the other night as I was jolting home … through the wind & rain on an open jolting car the whole first movement of a Symphony came into my head with a real Irish flavour about it - besides scraps of the other movements.” How charmingly Victorian!

Emerging Artist Freyja Garbett We take a look at an eclectic jazz talent Written by Barry O'Sullivan Photo by Tim Kent / Lyndon Pike
Freyja Garbett is a compositional storyteller. Growing up in Otford on the South Coast of New South Wales with her brother, the award-winning trumpeter/composer Nick Garbett. At the age of six she began lessons on the violin from her ‘severely addicted audiophile’ father, then progressed to classical piano lessons at the age of nine through the Suzuki method. After completing her eighth grade in AMEB music examinations while still at Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts, Freyja’s interest in jazz developed alongside that of her brother’s interest. She investigated the jazz music workshops at the Wollongong Conservatorium under the tutorship of Eric Dunan and Nick Southcott, her piano teacher. After some time spent in and out of playing she completed a brief music course in Lismore, then successfully auditioned for the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA, a college where students explore interdisciplinary approaches to music, dance, theatre, film, business, healthcare, education, and technology. For Freyja, it seemed like the perfect fit for what she wanted to achieve musically focussing on a broader sphere, not just jazz. “Going to Berklee at that stage of my life really felt like being thrown in at the deep end, and I had to work hard to keep my scholarship. The experience was life-changing, and I met so many like-minded people from across the world.” Freyja graduated with honours and was the top student of her year. For the funding of her debut album, a friend suggested that she source financing via an Indigogo project which she successfully achieved. “My musical concept for my debut recording was to attempt to blend all of my interests in music together. Growing up, I was not only captured by the sound of bebop and traditional/modern jazz, but also of hiphop, indie rock, and the sound of synthesizers.” Freyja recorded the album at Free Energy Devices Studios and 301 Studios in Sydney in 2019 under the guidance of the producer/musician, Matt Keegan with final mixes done by Richard Belkner.
Her heady compositions for the project drew influences from a vast range of styles and musicians, listing pianists and composers Fred Hersch, Gerald Clayton, and Maria Schneider, along with the likes of Flying Lotus, J Dilla, and Snarky Puppy. “The pieces on my debut album, Maya, are an exploration of an electro-acoustic approach to jazz composition and improvisation,” Freyja explains. “These compositions are springboards for improvisation and creativity. An added element to my approach is that all of the musicians can manipulate their instrument’s sound drastically and the arrangements of the pieces can be expanded upon, therefore creating ambient textures of the studio produced music that I listen to. On stage, we have the facility to offer audiences a fiery multi-dimensional performance.” Previously sharing both performances and recordings with artists in the New York and Boston scenes, including Dave Fiuczynski’s Planet MicroJam, Garbett’s recent accolades include a commission by the Sydney Improvised Music Association and APRA AMCOS to compose and perform with the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective at the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. Freya Garbett’s compositions are rich, mature, and immersive, serving as a foreword to a long and promising career, and have already opened up exciting opportunities for her and her associated group of musicians to come in 2020.

Volunteer Spotlight Ross Hayes Written by Pamela Newling Photo courtesy of Fine Music Sydney
Since 2012, Ross has been regularly presenting on Fine Music Sydney. His favourite programs are Sydney Schubert Society and Diversions in Fine Music. Contemplating retirement 10 or so years ago, Ross was given the advice ’Don’t just retire, rewire‘. Heeding this advice he began attending lectures at the Northside Opera Study Group in Lindfield. Through the opera group connection and the Sydney Schubert Society, a Fine Music programmer and presenter approached him and said, “Ross, you have a nice voice and like classical music. Maybe you’d like to become a presenter?” This ’ah ha‘ moment fitted his lifelong involvement in public speaking and his growing interest in music. At that time, Fine Music was short of presenters so he began training to go on air immediately. Ross’s rich voice and mastery of languages delight his audience. He claims not to be a natural with foreign languages, confessing that he studied French for the Leaving Certificate but failed the oral! His approach to pronunciation of French is to channel a native speaker—the way they push their lips forward, shrug and gesture—and that provides the rhythm of the language. He says: “The same with Italian—they have that sort of lilting with their language. For Russian, I channel a Russian engineer who used to work for me and with whom I’d been to Russia three times.” Other sources include the station’s own database (using native speakers of the respective language) and a specialist website. Spanish language is occasionally the source of good-humoured arguments between presenters. Argentinian and Spanish pronunciation varies significantly—as one presenter whose Argentinian wife will attest!
Ross’s interest in music began with playing guitar in his teens. At that stage he was a fan of Jimmy Hendrix, who was known for ’playing the guitar upside down and back-to-front‘. A Sydney Town Hall concert performance by Andre Segovia, who revolutionised the guitar for classical music, is an enduring memory for him. His classical interests were heightened when at 50 his children gave him a Walkman CD player with AM/FM and he was able to listen to Fine Music and ABC Classics. He now claims Schubert and Beethoven as favourites.
Ross found a passion for public speaking in 1974 in his final year of university, when he joined a Rostrum public speaking club. This was confidenceboosting in tutorial presentations and became a hobby that continues today. He attends Rostrum weekly and also belongs to two Toastmasters clubs, winning the trophy for the Oatley Toastmaster’s ’International Speech Contest‘ with the topic What Makes Teenagers Cry?
A serendipity moment in one of Ross’s trips to France was to discover Haydn’s oratorio, The Creation being performed in the cathedral of the port city of Caen, just opposite where he and his wife were staying. Ross’s professional career was as a mineral processing engineer. As he explains: geologists find the minerals, mining engineers dig it up and process engineers turn it into a saleable product: for example, they make coal that’s clean, gold ingots that gleam and copper concentrates that are sold overseas. Ross continues to enjoy doing a little bit of work along those lines—if it fits in with all the other things he’s doing!

Why Live Jazz Is Cool Part 2 in the Why Jazz Is Cool series Written by Leita Hutchings Artwork by Leita Huchings
It’s so fresh to see live music again! The ambience of goodwill and coloured lights of a club or café … and students from the Con who startle with talent beyond their years, fresh from Covid hibernation, who’ve polished their trumpets and honed their musicality like young gods and goddesses. We, the entertained, salute you with cocktails, beers and wines for our listening pleasure—a bonus! We in the audience are buzzing with excitement and anticipation, and feeling as tall as Marvel superheros; why should we miss out? Collectively, we have a new appreciation for our liberty! We smile with our eyes—this is real smiling, the type that crinkles your face. We’ve forgotten when live music was so good. It makes for a rare atmosphere, and we count ourselves blessed and lucky to be among the select few attending. We’re feeling fluent and breezy and cool, just like audiences have for thousands of years in villages and palaces across the eons, only it’s better— because it’s jazz!
A vibe and hum are happening. The owner cries with relief, from enduring this fight against commerce and germ warfare, and gives a moving welcome. And then the music kicks-off and dazzles! And we delight in the surprises that only jazz can offer. I find myself chatting with Harry and the Harry Ashton Band between sets. Harry laughs with a distant look in his eye when I ask him why he likes jazz. He strums his guitar as he says “Not because it’s complex … I’ve heard some people say they like jazz because it’s the most complex form of performance on an instrument, while still retaining groove and feel. I agree with that, but that’s not why I like it. Every song is really open to interpretations, it’s emotional without necessarily the need for lyricism.”
Harry does a little ambling finger work across strings, of no particular song …and explains that: ”…right at the start I had a friend at high school who was into jazz. I wasn’t into instruments then because I didn’t have the understanding of harmony to appreciate what was happening. But his singing and his tone were special. So I started listening to all this 50s music, like Russ Freeman and Pacific. I was hanging out with my school friend Yanick. We were graduating and he was talking about going to the Con. He was into heaps of jazz and, by association, I was listening to everything he was listening to. So that started the chain.” The Harry Ashton Band start another set of cool sweet jazz. Another set of slinky vibes and sultry vocals, and people smile from the enjoyment of just being, and dancing, and drinking, and moving with the jazz. We always knew it was cool; now it’s even better, because it’s LIVE jazz! Saturday 8 August at 12pm

So nice to not have be reminded of covid and other horrible things happening in the news every five minutes! CD REVIEWS The Australian Dictionary of Biography describes Frederick Septimus Kelly (18811916) as “oarsman, musician and soldier” and indeed he fulfilled these roles with distinction, including winning a gold medal in the 1908 Olympic Games. As a musician, he wanted to become “a great player and a great composer”, an ambition that was cut short by his death on the Western Front.

lineage). There is also the Serenade, premiered in 1912, in Kelly’s words “not very original, perhaps” but pleasant listening, and his best-known work, the moving Elegy in memoriam Rupert Brooke. - Paul Cooke
This release features three of his major orchestral works, the earliest of which was premiered at his graduation recital in 1908, the modestly-titled Orchestral Suite in E-flat major (here rendered as German Symphony in recognition of its musical
Freya Garbett is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. Listing her influences as the pianists Fred Hersch, Gerald Clayton, and Maria Schneider she has factored in the alternative indie sounds of Flying Lotus, rapper J Dilla, and Snarky Puppy just to stir up the mix a little. Her debut recording is a spectacular immersive waltz through some rich jazz laden landscapes with an electro-acoustic approach to jazz composition and improvisation. The theme of spirituality, together with a mellifluous approach, conceptually unifies the album making it poignant and stimulating. Her compositional creativity and pianism
adroitness give the disc its singular sound combined with the creative improvisational contributions from her line up of talented musicians. With it, Garbett has proven herself a fresh voice to be reckoned with,as well as an artist of superlative skill and vision.
Like its predecessor, this release includes compositions by Dulcie Holland, Miriam Hyde and Margaret Sutherland. It also features six world premiere recordings among its other selections. One of these is a piece dating back to the 1930s but not recorded until the composer’s centenary year in 1999: this is Linda Phillips’ chamber work Exaltation (Chassidic Air and Dance), with the oboe in particular, reflecting Jewish musical influences.
Other compelling pieces are Ella Macens’ The Space Between Stars, where the SSO conveys “the energy and magic of our night sky”, and Mary Finsterer’s double bass concerto, Lake Ice — Missed Tales I. And it is to be hoped that the extracts from Deborah Cheetham’s Eumerella, a War requiem for peace herald a complete recording.
