Part of 2MBS Fine Music Sydney’s mission is to assist and promote local talented emerging artists. We are therefore delighted to showcase the winners of the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Prize who are now eligible to compete for the annual 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso Award. Maureen Chaffey, Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso Award Co-ordinator, invited the three prizewinners to share their thoughts with Fine Music Magazine readers. One of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary classical composers, Harrison Birtwistle, died in April this year at the age of 87. James Nightingale reflects on his music, which along with fellow New Music Manchester group composers Alexander Goehr and Peter Maxwell Davies, cheekily undermined the prevailing English pastoral style of Vaughan Williams, Holst and Delius. Also in this issue, Phillip Cant profiles musical director John Morrison, one of Australia’s leading jazz drummers, band leaders, and educators, and reviews Morrison’s Celebration of Swing big band concert currently touring the country since March 2022. Lastly, in the the second of two interviews with Fine Music Magazine, composer and didgeridoo player William Barton talks to Andrew Bukenya about the July concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, his mother’s contribution, and his desire to welcome audiences to his musical ‘comfort zone’. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Dance Suites of the Romantic Era Catherine Peake investigates the evolving nature of the Dance Suite
After a period of neglect during part of the 18th and 19th centuries, the dance suite emerged from oblivion in the late Romantic period and once more became a musical form of choice. But the term dance suite now referred to instrumental pieces grouped together to form a coherent whole in ways that were less structured and more nuanced than those of the Baroque. The composers who found a form for their ideas in the dance suite completely reimagined it, and during the 1880s and ’90s it became a very different kind of music. Whether or not the revised dance suite could be seen as developing parallel with the art world impressionism of Monet and Manet is debatable, but there was no denying the loosening of formal strictures and softening of artistic definition in the music. Embodying the changes in harmony and form that were already underway at the time, the new dance suites became an integral part of the era’s expression and experimentation in music. Historical Picture Archive / Alamy Stock Photo
Extracting a dance suite from a larger work and publishing it separately became a useful way of establishing it as an independent musical form. Incorporating a tone that would become recognisably Scandinavian, Grieg’s Peer Gynt suites were amongst the first of the later Romantic dance suites to appear as pieces that could stand on their own merit. Grieg had taken the two four-movement suites from his incidental music for Ibsen’s play that had premiered in 1876, and published them separately some years later, in 1888 and 1893. Being well-received then, the suites have remained so into the 21st century. Tchaikovsky also had great success with a suite taken from a larger work, the music he wrote for the ballet The Nutcracker of 1892. Again, originally in a stage production with literature as its inspiration, the story being taken from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, The Nutcracker Suite became established in its own right. Although the ballet was not initially a success it became one during the twentieth century, and the suite with its charming use of the ethereal-sounding celeste was popular from the beginning.
Dance suites were also written for solo instruments, and in one of his best-known works, Debussy wrote his Suite Bergamasque for the piano, beginning the piece in 1890 and continually revising it before its publication in 1905. The suite became particularly well-known because of its popular third movement Clair de lune. Although Debussy eschewed the name, his suite reflected a form of impressionism with its merging harmonies and tone that, taken with other pieces of the era, helped establish a musical language notably different from anything that had come before. The dance suite had entered into the spirit of the Romantic era, but it would not be long before it transitioned again. Composers had seen its versatility, and in its next phase the dance suite would meet the evolving styles of the twentieth century, once more completely different from what had gone before but still recognisably itself. Listen to Dance suites from the Romantic era on Monday 8 August at 1:00pm.

Harrison Birtwistle James Nightingale reflects on the music of the late English composer
In April this year, the English composer Harrison Birtwistle died at the age of 87. His music has been ubiquitous in the English music scene since the 1970s, admired for its genuinely unique sound worlds and compelling musical logics. Birtwistle was born in Lancashire in 1934, learning clarinet as a child. He went to the Royal Manchester School of Music where his career took a turn towards composing. Along with his fellow students Alexander Goehr and Peter Maxwell Davies, he formed the New Music Manchester group. If there was one thing which drew the three composers together it was a feeling that the Englishness of the pastoral style of much composition in that country, epitomised by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, was a kind of confection that needed to be undermined. Each, in their own way, would bring a grittiness to the Englishness of their music, and I do mean Englishness. Somehow, Birtwistle’s music does sound English. Famously, Birtwistle admired the austere portrayal of the windswept countryside in Gustav Holst’s Egdon Heath over other more sentimental pictures of his homeland. Throughout his career, Birtwistle was fascinated by Greek myth and narrative. The minotaur, The cry of Anubis, The Io passion, and his most famous opera, The mask of Orpheus, are just a few of the works inspired by Hellenic legend. And like the legends themselves, Birtwistle’s music ebbs and flows as ideas form and re-form upon seemingly dissonant pedal notes that provide an unsettling canvas for the upper voices.
It has been said that Birtwistle’s music resembles a constantly passing flow of ideas and two of Birtwistle’s other pieces epitomise this. Firstly, The triumph of time is a work based upon a woodcut by Bruegel in which Father Time, in a chariot and followed by Death, passes by seemingly oblivious villagers going about the mundane activities of their life. Birtwistle explained the inspiration for his piece as the disconnection between the ideas in the woodcut, interpreted similarly to the collection of disparate sounds that become associated in the mind of the listener. Secondly, Endless parade, a trumpet concerto of sorts, presents one new idea after another in a procession of events that compete for attention. Birtwistle was uncompromising in his musical vision. When commissioned to write a piece for the Last Night of the Proms in 1995, the result was Panic (the title is a pun: Pan-like and confusion) for saxophone, jazz drummer, winds, brass and percussion. It was not at all what the audience may have expected; raucous, exciting, and as far as you could get from Pomp and Circumstance. Panic was both admired and hated on its first outing. It is hard to imagine a composer of similar character and inspiration arising again today. Birtwistle was undoubtedly a musician of his time and place. Two programs feature Birtwistle’s music in August: New Horizons, 14 August, 8:30pm, and Music of the Night, 31 August, 10:30pm.
This kind of texture can be heard in Earth dances, Birtwistle’s symphonic masterpiece of 1987. Cycles of melody seemingly circle around each other at different speeds, much like the motions of Sun, Earth and Moon. The interchange of foreground and background within the work builds to each successive climax in what is a monumental piece of musical imagination.

First Person William Barton Andrew Bukenya talks to Australia’s didgeridoo virtuoso
William Barton is an Indigenous didgeridoo player who grew up on a cattle station near Mt Isa in northwest Queensland, learning the didgeridoo from his uncle, Arthur Peterson, an elder of the Wannyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga people. His catalogue of achievements started at the age of 17 with an invitation to perform with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and continued with landmark performances with the Philharmonic Orchestras of London and Berlin and at historic events at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2019, Anzac Cove and the Beijing Olympics. His awards include Best Original Score for a Mainstage Production at the 2018 Sydney Theatre Awards and an ARIA in 2012 for Best Classical Album – Kalkadungu: Music for Didjeridu and Orchestra. In this, the second of two interviews with Fine Music Magazine, he talks to Andrew Bukenya about the July concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simone Young, his mother’s contribution, and his desire to welcome audiences to his musical ‘comfort zone’.

How does it feel when you walk out onto a stage? It does feel amazing, and I still thank my lucky stars, as Dad used to say. But I exist in this chapter in my life as a musician and as a composer and as a human being because of mum and dad, because of our aunties and uncles, who have given me opportunities for education and so on. I perform with my mum, Auntie Delmae Barton, quite a lot. There’s always been a linear journey, it doesn’t just come from a piece of paper. So with that you have to carry that responsibility, in the appropriate way. With any collaboration I try to connect with the local mob and make sure I’m doing the right thing. I want to get it right. Actually, because it’s on paper, if you don’t get it right, you get it right the next time. It’s about opening up the conversation, about intellectual property, about ‘oh, we can’t use those sacred melodies there, but we can use this one’.
And now you have a commission which is going to be performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra! I got the commission out of a field of 50 composers, and Simone Young chose three of the 50 composers to feature in her program on 20 July where her main piece is Mahler’s Resurrection no 2. I get to use the whole orchestra, the choir and the indigenous students’ choir with Lynn Williams, Gondwana Voices. I got the old floorboards of the Sydney Opera House, as part of this journey, as part of the music for the children and the adults to play as part of the ceremony. The piece is about life and death, but also resurrection, like hope and peace, and for that I go back to my Kalkadunga country. This is a really big moment for me, so I’m gonna try to get it right – it’s about being on par with nature and putting the last 20 years of my travel and life experience into this one eight-minute piece, Of the Earth. In the piece I have language that I wrote when I was 15 years old, and that people have heard me sing in my other collaborations. I wanted to reintroduce it in a different arrangement at the end of the orchestra work. My Kalkadunga song. I’ve always carried it with me everywhere I went in the world since a young teenager: Kalkadunga Yurdu, Kalkadunga Marabi, Kalta Malta Na Bila Bila, Montanalli Wamba, in English, ‘Kalkadoon man, Kalkadoon woman teaching young Bila Bila’. In the night around the campfire, this is how we learn and pass on the culture in that full circle. We keep on learning.

You are teaching the audience. They’re not passive in this journey.
Who might be your dream collaborations in the contemporary world… Rock, pop, soul, or funk?
When I frame things sometimes I say to the audience, ‘I want to welcome you in the comfort zone and not teach you’. I want to welcome you in to learn our culture and we can walk together. We’re a part of the engine room of change, the orchestral stage in this context, in a Western world. Powerful stuff. It’s a sacred ground because we make it so. Talking to my brothers I said, ‘I want that smoking ceremony to be outside the Opera House as well, ‘cause it’s not just about what’s happening on the inside of that sacred space, but also what’s happening on the outside. That’s very important, then it’s holistic.
I think I’d love to do some more work with Uncle Herbie Hancock. I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside of him when James Morrison invited me to International Jazz Day in Melbourne, a few years ago. I’ve worked with Yo-Yo Ma, he was amazing. So, if I could put a supergroup together, Uncle Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma, Marcus Miller, the bass player. Nigel Kennedy, and then of course, my mum, Auntie Delmae, and my partner Veronique. Then we need a good percussionist in there. I’d love to talk to you about your mum, Delmae, because she’s been such a formative influence in your life and continues to be. How much of her do you hear in your music when you listen back, even if you’re not conscious of it at the time?
Looking back, if you could meet and collaborate with a composer in history, reach back in time and spend a day with that composer, who would it be? First off, Bach. I like the melodic phrases and the fast phrases, the elements. And that translates for me as a guitarist as well. It’s that sort of vibe I like listening to. Are you familiar with Yngwie Malmsteen? He’s a guitarist, European rock shredder. I’m into that fast sort of playing as well. I think it’s cool to do a bit of shredding, but you gotta find the music in it as well, the actual interpretation. I think it’d be interesting to work with, say, Mahler, but also others like Sibelius. How would they interpret our landscape?
That’s really great question. Having performed quite a lot with mum, I remember performing with her in the Pompidou Arts Centre in Paris. I think it was one of my pieces called Sacred Song and I just remember mum singing it, a journey, sort of mournful, but also a beautiful sort of passage in this opening section of this work. I always hear mum’s voice even if I’m performing that piece just for the quartet. It’s like a tape player in my mind. That’s really special. I feel that she’s always there with us. Mum’s a very big part of it and always has been.

2022 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship Final Maureen Chaffey talks to Sydney Eisteddfod winners and emerging artists 2MBS Fine Music Sydney enjoys a lasting partnership with the Sydney Eisteddfod. This includes providing opportunities for Eisteddfod finalists to vie for the annual 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso Award and promoting event winners as emerging artists. Maureen Chaffey, Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso Award Coordinator, spoke to the 2022 Opera Scholarship Prize recipients – Nathan Bryon, baritone, Winner; Jeremy Boulton, baritone, 2nd place; and Anna Stephens, soprano, 3rd place – and invited them to share their thoughts with Fine Music Magazine readers.
Nathan, what does it mean to win the 2022 Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship? This opportunity means a great deal. It will be an enormous help in taking my next steps overseas. When I was starting out on my journey as a young singer, I remember viewing the Opera Final as a far-off dream, and to be at a place where that has become a reality, is a huge moment for me. How do you kick start a career hiatus after something like COVID-19? There’s no doubt that COVID-19 has been extraordinarily difficult for all artists. One of the few silver linings about that period was how much time we had to really focus on crucial elements of this art form. On-line tools were great to do work on languages, not to mention voice lessons, coaching, and seminars, so that we could be prepared for the time when things did begin to open up again. As young artists we work to prepare as much as possible so that we can make the most of the ‘lucky breaks’ when they come our way. How do you create an individual, physical presence that differs from that of your competitors and co-performers? Of course, you need to look the part on the day, though I believe it’s more crucial that you are comfortable and confident in your attire so that you can deliver the best performance you possibly can. I choose favourite colours and nice cuts. Broadly speaking, this art form is first and foremost about telling stories through beautiful singing and personally, I’m wary of losing sight of this in the hunt for the spectacle. Photography by WinkiPoP Media
Jeremy, what do you do to prepare for a competition? I decide on my arias months before entering as I find that knowing what I’m doing well in advance helps me to plan and get the voice doing what it needs to by competition time. Your technical prowess and emotional commitment are always under close scrutiny by adjudicators and panels – and rightly so. How do you decide on the repertoire? In close consultation with my teacher and coaches who say, “nobody knows your voice better than you.” With this in mind, you must harbour strong self-awareness when you choose repertoire. Know yourself, your limits and what will portray you best. My arias were broadly contrasting in style and displayed a variety of characters to demonstrate versatility and ultimately, employability. What got you hooked on Operatic singing? I was offered a place in the Opera Australia Regional Student Scholarship Program in Year 12. After a week rehearsing scenes and arias guided by experts, I was completely convinced that this was a viable career path. I attribute this program to giving me that final encouraging push to pursue an operatic career wholeheartedly. I’m very grateful.
Anna, what does placing in the Opera Scholarship mean? I’ve been a finalist a few times. It’s always a fantastic experience regardless of the outcome, but I’ll admit that coming away with a placing was so exciting and rewarding! Performing at the Concourse with other talented artists and an orchestra is not an everyday opportunity. We had a great time! With performances live streamed, how do you balance the expression of emotion while singing simultaneously to the live audience and those on the other side of the camera? On stage or on camera, it’s still the audience. Your concentration goes into thinking about the character and digging into their emotional state. There isn’t a lot of room for extra cognitive process. The rest is muscle memory and good practice leading up to the performance. What life skills, training and/or experience are useful? I learned flute and piano. Learning other instruments really cemented important musical skills like sightreading, learning music quickly, musicality and emotional expression through the music, and importantly, following a conductor while playing with an orchestra and experiencing symbiosis of the whole ensemble. This expanded my breadth of musical experience to draw from when singing. Full biographies are available at: https:// sydneyeisteddfod.com.au/assets/2022-Uploads/ eOpera-Program-.pdf
FineJazz Happenings: Jazz on Wednesdays The Magic of World Jazz by Robert Vale and Xavier Bichon Jazz On Wednesdays brings together the magic of world jazz. This is contemporary jazz, framed around European, Scandinavian, African and Middle Eastern jazz, and often inspired by traditional music of emerging cultures. Jazz On Wednesdays is two of 2MBS Fine Music Sydney’s sixteen FineJazz programs, linked by a feature album: Jazz Sketches at 12 noon with Robert Vale, and Planet Jazz at 7pm with Xavier Bichon. Each Wednesday, the feature album is at once inspiring and novel, adventurous and characteristic. August’s feature albums include a cellist from Armenia, a Norwegian drummer, the ancient oud of the Middle East, an Israeli bassist, and a brilliant young Scottish pianist/composer. 3 August New jazz has emerged in recent years from many unexpected places. Armenia is a case in point, the home country of prominent pianists/composers Tigran Hamasyan and the Sydneybased Zela Margossian. The music of both is often influenced by traditional Armenian elements and played in a robust fashion. Reflecting similar influences is the relative newcomer, Armenian cellist Artyom Manukyam. In his recent release Alone, Manukyan’s playing is often characterised by vigorous plucking of his cello, which he also uses for percussion purposes. Often, he employs over-dubs and subtly effective electronica. The album is enhanced by guest appearances of singers Gretchen Parlato and the emerging Michael Mayo.
14
10 August Norwegian drummer Snorre Kirk’s sixth album Going Up has an infectious and unique swinging set from Scandinavia. It comprises original compositions that incorporate a variety of styles and inspirations from Basieinflected jazz to mid to up-tempo blues riffs. No moody Scandinavian jazz, Kirk’s retro tunes centre around good old jazz that swings hard with a calypso-type flavour. The refreshing and exciting compositions remind us that jazz would not be jazz without the sounds of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Kirk enlists American tenor saxophonist Stephen Riley, drawing inspiration from Lester Young with a light vibrato, crafting well-thought-out solos of melodic substance. There is also Kirk’s long-time collaborator, tenor saxophonist Jan Harbeck. Together, they channel that old soul sound, but with strikingly viscous phrasing. The penultimate tune, named Blues Arabesque, can only be described as a worthy tribute to Duke Ellington’s Caravan.
17 August In deference to its title, the album Concerto of the Greater Sea by oud master Joseph Tawadros is not a concerto as such, but rather a raft of short pieces that includes The Greater Sea Suite. The music is entirely composed by Joseph Tawadros, who was inspired by the early 20th century Sufi poet and philosopher, Kahlil Gibran. This maintains a theme from Tawadros’ earlier album The Prophet. The pieces are played by the quartet of Joseph Tawadros (oud), Christopher Moore (viola), James Tawadros (the percussive req) and Matt McMahon (piano). It is a seamless blending of instruments normally employed in a Middle Eastern, classical or jazz performance. 24 August Internationally acclaimed bassist extraordinaire and singer Avishai Cohen is one of the world’s greatest bassists. Since his collaboration with Chick Corea’s trio in 1997, the Israeli-born musician has earned a global rockstar-like reputation for his bass sound that joins cello-like purity to percussive drama, and for original compositions embracing American jazz, Latin music, Sephardic-Jewish folk song, orchestral works, and even pop-tinged vocals. For his latest album Shifting Sands, Cohen has gathered young prodigies Azerbaijani pianist Elchin Shirinov and Israeli drummer Roni Kaspi. Shifting Sands includes brand new original compositions, alongside fan favourites and repertoires from Avishai’s vast musical library. Cohen’s stunning bass improvisation does leave room for his collaborators to shine, and if the new tunes add few surprises to the double bassist’s signature songbook, the playing remains jaw-dropping as ever.
31 August Scottish pianist Fergus McCreadie at age 24 has just released Forest Floor, his third album of original compositions inspired by the landscapes, culture, and history of his Scottish homeland. As a child, McCreadie had two unsuccessful forays into learning music, first with piano and then bagpipes, before at the age of 12 being overwhelmed by the opportunities for selfexpression offered in jazz. McCreadie’s trio was founded in 2016, and includes bassist David Bowden and drummer Stephen Henderson. All were former students of the Royal Conservatoire, Scotland. The trio has been the recipient of multiple jazz awards and has an extensive forward list of UK and European concert engagements.

Lukas Foss: An‘authentic genius’ Paul Cooke looks at the music of Lukas Foss on the 100th anniversary of his birth As I begin to write this tribute to Lukas Foss, born a century ago this month, two news articles catch my eye: an Australian novelist is accused of plagiarism; and an exhibition opens in Melbourne featuring the artist Picasso, of whom the assistant director of the Centre Pompidou in Paris says, “A genius is a sponge, not someone floating above the world.” If classical music has developed by constant reference to its past, how has Foss navigated his way? Born in Berlin, Lukas Foss studied with Julius Goldstein and was introduced to the music of Bach (a constant inspiration), Mozart and Beethoven, before the family, fleeing Nazi Germany, moved to Paris in 1933. Here he studied composition with Noël Gallon, who had also taught the teenage Olivier Messiaen. I don’t know what effect Gallon had on Foss, but Messiaen was later to say that Gallon “was a marvellous teacher … I learned all my counterpoint, from A to Z, with Noël Gallon … he knew how to adapt to my age and my tastes, and he treated me like his own son.” In 1937 the family moved to the USA, where the 15-year-old Foss attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Here he studied with the composer Randall Thompson, best known for his choral works, described as “a personalised blend of 16th and 17th century contrapuntal techniques with a conservative yet recognisably 20th century harmonic base”. In these early years in the USA, he also received tuition in composition from Paul Hindemith, and in conducting from Fritz Reiner and Serge Koussevitzky. In 1942 he was recognised by the New York Music Critics’ Circle for his cantata The prairie, a work which showcases both his diverse influences (Debussy, Prokofiev, Hindemith, Stravinsky and, especially, Copland) and his desire to
amalgamate them into a coherent whole. This award was followed in quick succession by a Guggenheim fellowship and a Fulbright grant. Foss succeeded Arnold Schoenberg as professor of music at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1953. Here, having hitherto tended towards Coplandesque Americana and Stravinskian Neoclassicism, he, like Schoenberg before him, “wrestled daily with the idea of tradition, how to love it, but also how to leave it behind”. He explored aleatoric music, graphically notated music, serial music and more, and in 1957 founded the Improvisation Chamber Ensemble, where “in order to make improvised chamber music feasible … system and chance act as partners”. From this period, Time cycle (1960) was his first composition using atonal and twelvetone devices and incorporating improvisations between the songs. The title of Phorion (1967) is a Greek word meaning ‘stolen goods’: here the Prelude from the solo violin Partita no 3 in E major by Bach is ‘stolen’, or ‘used as if no other notes were available’, but with its device of submerging into and emerging from inaudible playing and its use of electronic and amplified instruments, it is very definitely not Bach. From about 1975 he became increasingly eclectic in his influences, with 1981’s Solo (for piano) engaging with minimalism, though more reminiscent of Bach than Glass. In general, Foss’s experimentation is allied with ‘brightness of sound, vivacious rhythm, freshness of invention, and tunefulness’. Aaron Copland spoke of his “original and stimulating compositions”; Leonard Bernstein regarded him as an ‘authentic genius’. Lukas Foss and Friends, Sunday Special at 3:00pm on 21 August.

The concert’s music repertoire highlights the greatest Big Band hits of the 1940s, featuring the music of Glenn Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and more. Musical director John Morrison is recognised as one of Australia’s leading jazz drummers, band leaders, and educators.
Morrison has delighted audiences for more than 25 years with his humour and dedication to sounds that swing. Equally at home in a small group or big band setting, his musical facility runs the entire spectrum from traditional jazz, swing, bebop, R&B and soul to commercial jazz rock. Swing City’s 2000 album Serious Fun includes well-known favourites such as In the Mood (Glenn Miller), Sing, Sing, Sing (Louis Prima) and Caravan (Duke Ellington). On the Celebration of Swing tour there is a mix of original and younger musicians; the playing is tight, and the interesting arrangements really showcase the band members’ individual talents. Such is the timeless nature of the music that all the pieces will be familiar. A highlight for me when I saw the show in Springwood was Caravan, with John playing brushes on paper and with just a baritone sax and clarinet opening the piece, then building to include the whole band with John back at the drum kit – a great arrangement. We also heard Fever and Summertime from Jacki Cooper, then songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett from Gregg Arthur, not to mention the delightful duet Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.
The eldest of the Morrison family, John spent much of his early musical life playing and recording with his younger brother James. In the early years, he played many different instruments and styles, but jazz drumming was to be his calling. Over the years, he has played with many luminaries, including Eartha Kitt, Don Burrows, George Golla, and Bob Barnard. His band Swing City was formed in 1999 for the opening of the Sydney Olympics and has since gone on to headline almost every major event and festival in Australia.
For an evening of nostalgic and unforgettable music from the greatest big bands of the 1940s, with special guest James Morrison, see Celebration of Swing at Sydney’s State Theatre in late August.
As an educator, for some 40 years, he has been the musical director for Sydney Jazz Camps, and has toured disadvantaged schools in the Northern Territory. With Jacki Cooper, he has developed the Queensland Jazz Festival that is staged in a number of locations throughout remote and urban Queensland. By measures of geography, participation, and attendance, it could be considered the largest live music festival in the world, offering the taste of jazz to remote and indigenous communities. In 2013, he and Jacki Cooper launched the Big Band Blast Festival in Port Macquarie, an annual collaborative and non-competitive big band celebration, only interrupted by Covid.

Volunteer Spotlight Brian Cornish Pamela Newling talks with Brian Cornish about how Fine Music Sydney has widened his musical horizons Brian Cornish joined Fine Music Sydney with a tentative start back in 2019/20, when Covid restrictions were in full force. Following a suggestion from long-term volunteer Christina MacGuinness, whom Brian knows through his local church choir, he welcomed the opportunity to become a regular presenter. Brian usually presents a two or three-hour afternoon session each week. He comments: “I have broadcast over 40 programs now, still a beginner by the standards of others here, for sure. So far, I’ve found it is harder than it seems, or sounds. It’s good to have a script with more than you have time to say so you can pick what you judge to be the most interesting details, to sound a little less formal. Thanks to the programmers who choose the music, I have learned a lot preparing these scripts. You must also keep up reasonable energy and attention levels during the program, remember what to say and whom to credit, and above all watch the timing, but generally I’ve been pleasantly surprised listening to the result afterwards.” Explaining his love of music, Brian says: “I’ve been drawn to serious music from my teenage years, after chance hearings of some striking twentieth century pieces. In a world of disposability and obsolescence, music is one of those precious goods that has intrinsic value. It’s intended to last forever, but it needs performers, broadcasts, and audiences to be fully brought to life, and that’s where the station comes in. Also, changes in styles over time are a commentary on history. Every piece has a background that is worth understanding, though I’m careful not to overdo the details on air; there is limited time or appetite for lectures. This also ties in with my interest in history and languages. I’ve found a use for my high school French, university German and later study of Chinese (in a recent program of Chinese composers).” Brian’s musical taste includes being open to most serious music, though he tends to favour Baroque and modern over Classical and Romantic.
He continues: “that said, in my chosen afternoon slots I present quite a lot of Classical and Romantic music, which has been an education! There is an under-recognised common ground between François Couperin and rhythmic experiments in contemporary music, for example. Besides, Couperin’s melodies are so beautiful.” All volunteers have musical highlights to share. Brian says: “I vividly remember Jorge Bolet playing Liszt’s Venezia e Napoli on a Sydney tour in the 1980s and from about the same time Michele Campanella performing all of Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes, both at the Opera House. A few years later I saw the SSO at the Sydney Town Hall, performing Messiaen’s Eclairs sur l’au dela, a deeply spiritual piece that palpably touched the audience in a way rarely seen or felt.” Brian’s other interests include the local history society, a book and record collection, some local travel, quiet times with his wife, and for the past year, adjusting to retirement. “Volunteering has greatly assisted the latter,” he says.

CD REVIEWS Mozart, Dvorák, Chance Acacia Quartet Move Records MCD 626
Goethe once described Beethoven’s string quartets as resembling ‘four intelligent people conversing among themselves’. By virtue of their imaginative programming on this recent release, the Acacia Quartet allows us to be involved in conversations within but also between works, and to be introduced to a new composition by an exciting young Australian, Alice Chance. Often Mozart’s string quartets are bundled together, similarly Dvořák’s ‘American’ works. Here we have a common inspiration in Haydn but contrasting ways in which it is used. Mozart’s quartet was one of a set composed in response to
Haydn’s groundbreaking set of the previous year: the high stakes and the minor key of this quartet mean that the conversations here are rather intense. Contrast that with Dvořák’s desire to compose something that reflected his contentment visiting rural Ohio at the time: “...dear Papa Haydn kept appearing before my eyes, and that is why it all turned out so simply.” Chance’s String quartet no 2 falls somewhere in between, engaging like Dvořák with the natural world but conscious of its fragility. A highly recommended recital.
Front and Center is the eighteenth album for pianist, Florian Ross. He composes, performs, teaches in several institutions, including the Berlin Jazz Institute, and has started his own music label. It is thoughtful jazz; something you can listen to at any time. Tracks range from what is gentle and good for the soul, to tracks with the brass band sound, and some that are downright funky. And all in one CD. Echo Chamber is very chilled, and I feel that Madeleine must be very loved. Florian describes his music on
his website as “coming from a deep synthesis of heart and mind, of feeling and intellect”, and I couldn’t agree more. The website by the way, is in both English and German to facilitate getting to know the composer and his music better, attesting to his international following. Florian performed recently at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Jazz Festival. He has a lovely presence and, not surprisingly, this is reflected in his album.

Lachlan Skipworth: Chamber Works, vol 2
Streeton Trio; Diana Doherty, oboe; Andrew Nicholson, flute; Adam Pinto, piano; Cygnus Arioso. Arioso Cygnus CA004
West Australian Lachlan Skipworth is developing a reputation as a fine composer, able to balance a sense of adventure with an immediacy of approach that is sure to win audiences. His second volume of chamber music on the Arioso Cygnus label features performers from all over Australia, all of whom are recorded beautifully on this polished disc. Skipworth is a practitioner of the shakuhachi and although his playing is not featured in the recording, the shakuhachi is, in Light Rain, a mysterious and moving work performed by Bronwyn
23
Kirkpatrick. The piece that follows, The crossing, performed by Syzygy Ensemble, blends and mixes the sounds of the instruments with a beguiling blend of echo and delay. The highlight of the CD is the Oboe quartet, performed by Diana Doherty with the Streeton Trio, a work of colour, movement and virtuosity from start to finish. Skipworth’s music rewards close listening, especially in such sympathetic performances and beautifully recorded tracks. – James Nightingale

Brothers Xerxes and Arsamene both love Romilda, who loves Arsamene. Xerxes, although betrothed to Amastre, banishes Arsamene from the kingdom. Amastre loves Xerxes and disguises herself as a young soldier to be near him. Atalanta, in love with Arsamene, attempts to ensure that Xerxes marries Romilda by suggesting that Arsamene loves only her. Xerxes pardons Arsamene, then tells Romilda’s father Ariodate that his daughter will marry royal blood. Ariodate mistakenly arranges a marriage ceremony between Arsamene and Romilda. 16:00 FINE MUSIC DRIVE with Ross Hayes 19:00 PLANET JAZZ with Xavier Bichon 20:00 AT THE OPERA Prepared by Elaine Siversen Mozart, W. Idomeneo, K366. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Giambattista Varesco. First performed Munich, 1781. IDOMENEO, King of Crete: Mark Tucker, ten IDAMANTE, his son: Fiona Campbell, cont NEPTUNE’S MESSENGER: Didier Frédéric, bass ILIA, Trojan princess: Martene Grimson, sop ELECTRA, princess of Argos: Penelope Mills, sop HIGH PRIEST OF NEPTUNE: Brett Wymark, ten Cantillation; O of the Antipodes/Antony Walker. ABC 476 6250 2:41 Idomeneo, King of Crete, saved from a shipwreck, has promised Neptune to sacrifice the first person he meets. It is his son Idamante. Idomeneo is advised he could substitute the sacrifice if Idamante is exiled. Idomeneo arrives to farewell his son before his ship sails to Greece. During a powerful storm a large serpent rises from the waves and Idomeneo, recognising Neptune's messenger, offers his own life to the god. Although Ilia, a captured Trojan princess, secretly loves Idamante, she has always rejected him. Returning to the palace, Idamante tells Ilia he must fight the serpent that is destroying the villages along the coast. Ilia confesses her love. Idomeneo sends his son to escort the princess Electra to her home in Argos but the monster that ravages the land, prevents the embarkation. Idamante kills the serpent. Idomeneo confesses his vow and agrees to the sacrifice of his son. Idamante arrives dressed in sacrificial robes ready to die. Ilia begs to be allowed to take his place. The High Priest of Neptune proclaims that love has triumphed, so Neptune no longer requires Idamante’s death. Idomeneo must resign his crown to Idamante and Ilia as the new rulers of Crete. Strauss, J. II A night in Venice. Operetta in three acts. Libretto by Friedrich Zell (Camillo Walzel) and Richard Genée, after Le Château Trompette by Eugène Corman and Richard Genée. First performed Berlin, October 1883. DUKE GUIDO: Nicolai Gedda, ten DELAQUA: Karl Donch, bar BARBARA: Hanna Ludwig, sop BARBARA: Hannah Norbert, voice CIBOLETTA: Emmy Loose, sop CARAMELLO: Erich Kunz, bar ENRICO: Anton Diffring, voice ANNINA: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, sop PAPPACODA: Peter Klein, bar Philharmonia Ch & O/Otto Ackermann. LP EMI/WRC R 05386 1:18 Guido, Duke of Urbino, is arranging a lavish reception at the Ducal Palace in Venice. The invited senators are anxious about the Duke’s amorous intentions towards their wives. The ageing Delaqua arranges for his beautiful young wife, Barbara, to visit her aunt in Murano. He will take his cook, Ciboletta, to the reception. His barber, Caramello overhears the plan and, knowing that the Duke is particularly keen to meet Barbara, he secures the use of a gondola to take Barbara to the Ducal Palace. Instead of visiting her
aunt, Barbara intends to go to the masked carnival with her lover, Enrico. She arranges for a friend, Annina, to take her place in the gondola. Annina is annoyed to find that her own sweetheart, Caramello, is part of the plot so she decides that she will enjoy herself at the reception. When Delaqua arrives with his make-believe wife, Caramello tells the Duke that she really is the cook, Ciboletta. The Duke decides to keep up the pretence and acts seductively towards both women while Caramello and Pappacoda, Ciboletta’s sweetheart, have to watch as they wait at table. At midnight, the Duke and his guests go into St Mark’s Square to watch the carnival. Delacqua discovers Barbara with Enrico. She tells her husband that she was rescued by Enrico after being abducted. The Duke restores Annina to Caramello, urges him to marry her, and appoints him as the steward of his household. In that way, he will have Annina around to indulge in some flirtation. He goes off in search of more amorous adventures. Hasse, J. Yes, you will have the gondola, from Venetian songs. Julianne Baird, sop; Nancy Hadden, fl; Erin Headley, bass viol; Malcolm Proud, hpd. Romance (1908); Romance Erato 22292-45407-2 2:43 (1905). Susan Milan, fl; Ian Brown, pf. King Arthur has returned to Camelot from the victory over the Saxons. He praises the Knights of the Round Table, in particular his trusted knight Lancelot. Lancelot is in love with the queen, Guinevere, and she with him. They meet secretly but are spied on by Mordred. Lancelot and Guinevere make their escape, but not before Lancelot has wounded Mordred in a fight. Mordred survives and immediately goes to the king to tell him about the lovers. Arthur consults with the magician Merlin, who predicts the downfall of the Round Table. Arthur pursues Lancelot and challenges him to a fight in which Lancelot is mortally wounded. Lancelot throws away his weapons and refuses to continue to fight his king. Arthur forgives him. Meanwhile, Guinevere fearing Lancelot's imminent death, strangles herself with her own hair.

His diagnosis is that Antiochus’ illness is of the soul and not the body and, when the doctor mentions love as the probable cause, Antiochus becomes agitated. He is about to give Erasistrate further details but holds back when he sees Seleucus approaching. Separately, Stratonice arrives and the doctor observes an increased pulse rate. Concealing this from Seleucus, the doctor reports that only the gods can save his son. Amidst prayers, Antiochus asks the gods to let him die. Seleucus departs and Stratonice is left alone with Antiochus. He is about to declare his love for her but is interrupted by the return of the doctor, who counsels caution. After the lovers leave, the doctor prays to Venus for assistance and comes up with a strategy. When Seleucus returns, the doctor says that it
is his own wife with whom Antiochus is in love. Seleucus offers the doctor money to arrange a divorce. Hypothetically, the doctor then asks Seleucus what he would do if it were his own fiancée that Antiochus desired. Realising what is happening, Seleucus summons the lovers and, assuring himself of their fidelity, gives his blessing to their marriage.
