Henri Tomasi: A Corsican heart Anatolij Mirosznyk - the displaced concert pianist Handel and the London Foundling Hospital High Five: Steve Barry Australian Romantic & Classical OrchestraWorld’s Best Opera Boxes
You’ve seen them in Pretty Woman. Bond Villains like to hang out in them and so do Mission Impossible assassination targets. Opera boxes. It’s where royalty sit. They are the boxes that stand out from the side walls separating the haves from the have nots. While the opera box was for the upper class initially, it was created as a private space within a public space. It marked a sort of coming together of the classes rather than watching performances in private homes.
The opera box is the epitome of social status. So pack your jewels and head for one of our top five opera boxes.
Royal Opera House, London
The Royal Box is another box lined with red velvet and serving up divine views of the stage and the orchestra. Behind the box are a private dining room and a private Victorian water closet dating back to 1858. If you can’t get tickets to the royal box, the Grand Tier Box is next best thing and is on the same level, featuring similar trimmings to the Royal Box.
Wiener Staatsoper, Vienna
The circle box for the annual Vienna Opera Ball costs upwards of 20,000 euros. Carpeted in crushed red velvet, with crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the box features a table with pressed white linen which will seat twelve. The box looks out over the ballroom and there is even a catering service..

Recent events in Eastern Europe have alerted us to the plight of refugees from Ukraine, and the subsequent settlement of some of them in Australia, but the Australian Ukrainian community traces its foundation to the arrival of post-World War II refugees from war-torn Europe. One of these ‘displaced persons’ was the concert pianist Anatolij Mirosznyk, who had been drafted into German labour camps at 18, and came to Australia after the war ended. Paul Cooke traces his development from the Freiburg Conservatory, where he studied with Walter Gieseking and was described by teachers as a ’piano genius’, the compositions for over 600 exercises for Ballet Australasia’s first syllabus, his performances at the Ukrainian Music Festival in Kyiv, and the sizeable number of keyboard, chamber, orchestral and vocal works he composed in the last couple of decades of his life.
High Five continues with its focus on talented local musicians with a discussion between Barry O’Sullivan and the multi-awardwinning pianist, composer, improviser, and lecturer Steve Barry. Born and raised in New Zealand, Steve now calls Sydney home and relates some of his earliest music memories, and what motivated him to further his career in Australia.
Fine Music Magazine’s contributors are constantly out and about savouring the delights of the Sydney music scene. Our Classical Coordinator Iris Zeng reviews the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s New Perspectives concert at Walsh Bay – two exquisite chamber works: Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, op 20 and Louise Farrenc’s Nonet in E flat major, op 38, performed on period instruments.

Henri Tomasi: A Corsican heart
James Nightingale uncovers hidden gems of a well-travelled composer
The French composer Henri Tomasi was born in Marseille to Corsican parents, and it is to Corsica that he would turn for musical inspiration throughout his musical career. The story goes that he first dreamed of being a sailor, and it was only on visiting his grandmother in Corsica and experiencing the music of the island that he decided that music was to be his career. It is perhaps to Corsica that Tomasi’s openness to the world can be attributed. The winds of Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East all blow at times upon the French island in the Mediterranean.
To sustain himself during his musical education, he worked in hotels, cinemas, theatres, and brothels, often improvising at the piano, likely unaware that he was developing the creativity that would serve him so well as a composer in later life.
After studying at the conservatories in Marseille and Paris, Tomasi was successful in winning the Prix de Rome in 1927, afterwards becoming the musical director of the Radio Colonial Orchestra based in French Indochina. Experiences here led him to become one of the pioneers of radiophonic music and to write pieces that brought the musical character of far-flung places to French concert audiences. Writing music inspired by Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos, for example, was a way of introducing Western audiences to a world that most people of that time could not experience first-hand.
His musical style was based in the impressionism of the early 20th Century with occasionally dissonant but highly coloured harmonies and orchestration. His knowledge of the capabilities of the instruments, especially brass and woodwind, is evident in his many concertos for brass and woodwind instruments. The most attractive of these is the Trumpet Concerto, composed in 1949 for Ludovic Vaillant, who was the principal trumpet of the Orchestra National at that time. This concerto is the best known of Tomasi’s orchestral works and audiences enjoy its tuneful virtuosity that shows off the instrument to great advantage.
Tomasi’s music reflects the turbulence of the times in which he lived. One of his most impressive works is the Mass for Peace, composed for Remembrance Day in 1945. The cold war and nuclear arms-race are the subjects of his anti-war pieces, The Ash Wedding, and his final theatrical work, In Praise of Madness.
His later life was coloured by a sense of disappointment and bitterness as disease affected his ability to work, curtailing his conducting career in 1957. He continued to compose until his death in 1971 and was still working with the most important soloists of his day until the end of his career, including Jean-Pierre Rampal, for whom he composed a flute concerto in 1966.
Tomasi’s music is not well known, and it is difficult to find his music on record. A few artists are still recording his works and amongst the many hidden gems to be discovered are his string trio, the wind sextet, Printemps, and his collection of piano works. Through these works and many others, Tomasi’s musical imagination will hopefully continue to tempt us to travel and to work together for a better world.
Handel and the London Foundling Hospital
Stephen Matthews explores how Messiah found its way into a children’s charity
Formerly the site of the medieval palace, gardens and orchards of the Bishops of Ely, Hatton Garden in London became the first home of the Foundling Hospital in 1741.
It was the vision of one man, a retired sea captain, Thomas Coram, who had long dreamed of establishing a refuge in London for children born outside marriage, abandoned or orphaned, along the lines of the Venetian Ospedali with which the composer Antonio Vivaldi was closely associated.
With the support of members of the nobility, judiciary and the professional classes, Coram presented three petitions to King George II, who in 1739 granted the Royal Foundling Charter. This set out the aims and rules of the hospital, so called for its healthy hospitality for the less fortunate rather than its medical facilities.
The founding governors and guardians were an impressive lot and included 17 dukes, 29 earls, six viscounts, seven privy councillors and numerous others from the ranks of the wealthy aristocracy.
The foundation stone of the new purpose-built hospital in Bloomsbury was laid in September 1742. The building took nine years to complete and consisted of two wings, one for boys and one for girls, and a chapel, all built around an open courtyard.
It has been speculated that two of the orphanage’s governors, who were associated with Handel’s publisher, invited him to a committee meeting in 1749 when Handel offered a performance of instrumental and vocal music, provided the money raised was applied to finishing the chapel of the Hospital. The programme for the occasion included excerpts from his oratorio, Music for the Royal Fireworks, and an anthem Blessed are they that considereth the poor, later to become known as the Anthem for the Foundling Hospital
But it would be almost a year before Handel’s association with the Foundling Hospital would be sealed. He had donated an organ, which he helped design, to the chapel, and his oratorio Messiah would be used to raise funds, just as it had been for Mercer’s Hospital in Dublin.
The Messiah concert in the presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales was a sell-out, as was a second concert four days later. For the next ten years it became an annual concert fixture and would forever be associated with the Foundling Hospital.
Things very nearly didn’t work out the way the Foundling Hospital governors expected. They had come to believe that Messiah was their exclusive property, but Handel would have none of it. After noting in the minutes of a meeting of governors that “Mr Handel did not seem agreeable” to a proposal to confirm the Foundling Hospital ownership of Messiah by Act of Parliament, Handel left the three-volume performance score to the Hospital when he died.
After moving the children from the Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury in the 1920s to a ‘more healthy’ former convent in Redhill, Surrey, a new purpose-built facility was constructed in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, before it finally closed in the 1950s and was acquired for use as a school.
Today there is a Foundling Museum on part of the Bloomsbury site, and the original Thomas Coram charity still exists.
Anatolij Mirosznyk - the displaced concert pianist
Friday 26 March 1954: “Sixty-four new settlers became Australian citizens at an impressive ceremony presided over by the Lord Mayor … at the Town Hall.” This was a citizenship ceremony with a difference: the first presided over by the Lord Mayor at the Town Hall, a more desirable atmosphere for such an important ceremony than that provided by a magistrate at a police court. It was also the first at which ‘New Australians’ could give up former political allegiance but not renounce the land of their birth.
One of the beneficiaries of this new approach was Anatolij Mirosznyk, 30, characterised by the Sydney Morning Herald in their report of the event as a ‘former Ukrainian’ and ‘concert pianist’ who had been drafted into German labour camps at 18, and came to Australia after the war ended. But Mirosznyk never shook off his Ukrainian heritage, and he came to be highly regarded as a composer, teacher, and public figure as well as a pianist.
Mirosznyk was born in August 1923 in Kyiv. When in 1941 Kyiv was occupied by German troops, he and other musicians were sent to Germany to work on deforestation and construction. After the war was over, he spent some time in a displaced persons camp in Bayreuth before attending Freiburg Conservatory: his teachers here declaring him ‘best pupil I ever had’, and ‘a piano genius’, encomiums he employed to advertise his first solo concert in Sydney some years later. While in Freiburg, he also benefitted from private lessons with Walter Gieseking, who placed great importance on the ‘composer’s spirit’ and on improvisation: “if a person has no imagination, no fantasy, he couldn’t become a good performer”.
In May 1948, Mirosznyk emigrated to Australia under the displaced persons program, arriving with two suitcases, a camera, and a piano accordion. Under this program, immigrants were contracted to work for two years wherever the federal government authorities sent them: in his case, he worked as an orderly at Concord Repatriation Hospital, a far more suitable occupation for a pianist’s hands than cane-cutting in North Queensland, working on the Snowy Mountains Scheme, or the construction of Warragamba Dam.
He was fortunate to be sponsored by A.H. Appleroth (of Aeroplane Jelly fame), who organised a radio broadcast recital for him and then, after the termination of his contract with the government, a solo recital at Sydney Town Hall. Mirosznyk reckoned this concert ‘a colossal success’ but reviews were not unanimous in their praise. The Daily Telegraph thought that “speed, indeed, was Mr Mirosznyk’s demon”, ruining most of Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata. The Bulletin, conversely, praised the fluency of his style and his ability to build up formidable climaxes in the very same work.
In 1953 he set up a recording company to produce Ukrainian (and later Italian and Russian) music; he selected the musicians, and arranged, scored, and conducted the music for these releases. In 1964 he found time to compose music for over 600 exercises for Ballet Australasia’s first syllabus. From 1992 onwards he took part numerous times in the Ukrainian Music Festival in Kyiv. He regarded his performances there as the pinnacle of his musical career, and his Concert Phantasy was premiered there in 1995, one of a sizable number of keyboard, chamber, orchestral and vocal works he composed in the last couple of decades of his life.
Paul Cooke remembers an influential Ukrainian-Australian composer and pianistMirosznyk died in 2011. His will made possible a special prize at the 2012 Sydney International Piano Competition, the first prize winner giving the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Gerard Brophy. Fittingly, the second volume of Stephen Pleskun’s A Chronological History of Australian Composers and Their Compositions includes a dedication to the memory of Mirosznyk, with whom Pleskun had studied piano and whose talents touched so many people.

High Five: Steve Barry
Barry O’Sullivan talks with the multi-award-winning musician
Dr Steve Barry is a multi-award-winning pianist, composer, improviser, and lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and now living and creating on Gadigal land, Barry works across the music industry as a performer, accompanist, educator, and consultant.
You were born and raised in New Zealand. What were some of your earliest musical memories and influences there?
My mother is a ballet teacher, so I grew up with the sound of mazurkas, polonaises, and jigs firmly in my ears. Quite often I would sit listening to Mum take a class in the old, cold wooden hall where she taught, and to the class pianist who became a proxy Nana to me. I started playing at about four years old on one of those classic Yamaha keyboards with built-in Disney songs and these awesome assignable SPDlike buttons with drums in one bank and animal and vehicle sounds in the other. I’m still amazed they didn’t give out after so many hours of bashing.
Two things got me started on jazz. Firstly, at about age eleven, my teacher introduced me to the jazz piano syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), one of if not the first jazz-specific music syllabuses for young learners. Shortly afterwards, my great-uncle turned me on to Band-in-a-Box, an early algorithmic accompaniment software that made it easy to jam with what at the time felt like a real band. I was fortunate that my high school had an exceptional music department led by a passionate music teacher, who curated a lot of external performance opportunities for us, including playing in a festival at the Sydney Opera House. I joined the stage band on the piano after an early debut on congas and started a trio out of school with two classmates that went on to play a regular local cafe gig on Saturdays and Sundays for three years. We weren’t paid much, but it was the perfect sandbox to experiment with new material and ideas.
What were the motivational reasons for furthering your musical career in Australia?
New Zealand was a beautiful place to start a music career, being such a close-knit and supportive community, and one where the hierarchies between teacher and student were non-existent. I was fortunate to be playing early on with some of the more senior musicians. After a few years of playing a regular Friday night residency in the city, I started to get the itch for something more. It was rare to see international jazz artists tour New Zealand, and I wanted to experience the buzz of a big city scene which I’d heard about from older musicians who had spent time abroad. My dad was working between Auckland and Melbourne at the time, and a couple of trips I made as a teenager to the festival at Wangaratta further highlighted the advantages of larger scenes. There was more music infrastructure, venues, musicians, music and yes – competition. I started to see that Australia was the next logical step if I wanted to pursue the kind of breadth and calibre of craft I was aiming towards. After hesitating for a year, I made the move.
Apart from your busy performance schedule and teaching at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, what are some of your non-musical interests?
I’m an avid runner. Many people have written about the meditative nature of running, and it’s certainly become that for me. I find it a reset time for ideas to percolate without distraction. I find compositional ideas come to me during a run, or compositional problems seem to quickly resolve themselves after returning from one. I reckon it’s made me a better improviser too. Longer distances are a particular favourite. I’ve run a few 50km and 100km events and I am eyeing up my first 100-mile event in New Zealand in February next year.
It’s five o’clock on a Sunday afternoon and you want to chill listening to some music. What would your personal choices be?
Lately, I’ve been exploring Khruangbin, a soul-dubpsychedelia trio out of Texas; Little Dragon, Hiatus Kaiyote and Scary Goldings are also regular faves. Or if I’m feeling exceptionally chilled, it might be some Mozart piano sonatas, Sylvan Esso or Ella and Louis. A bit of a mix.
What is your current musical project?
There are two at the moment. The first is a new set of compositions and improvisations for solo piano, a kind of juxtaposition of 20th-century pianism and very melodic ‘songs without words’ (though there may even be some words). The second is a large ensemble suite that explores our relationship to the places and cities that we live in, real or imagined, and the reciprocal process of identity formation that relationship entails.
New Perspectives: Period-style performers charm the piers
Reviewed by Iris Zeng“Stable temperatures… the weather was just right,” said Nicole van Bruggen, Co-Artistic Director of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra (ARCO), after the concert. Her relief wasn’t simply for the sake of concertgoers, but the delicate period instruments.
On Friday 2 June, ARCO brought the charm of a Viennese salon to Walsh Bay. Audiences sat in tiered rows for a rare treat: a historically informed performance of Louise Farrenc’s Nonet in E-flat major (1849), nodding gracefully to another divertimento, Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major (1799).
What might have entertained a small palace or restaurant in 1800 found new resonance in The Neilson, a braille-wall auditorium referencing a famous Beethoven quote (“...music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy”).
The modest stage, set with just nine music stands, did not disguise the prowess of the crème de la crème cast. Their sensibility as early music specialists coaxed raw yet sublime beauty from nine antique instruments.
Opening with Farrenc’s Nonet, an elegant interplay between strings and winds unfolded. The star was American violinist Jenna Sherry, who spun mesmerizing cadenzas throughout the evening, while sharing colourful moments with various members – one particularly tender dialogue with Van Bruggen’s clarinet was drawn in Beethoven’s second movement, Adagio Cantabile. In Scherzo Vivace, the initial pizzicato melody trickled into the winds, giving way to a
dreamy, lyrical section led by oboist Tatjana Zimre and flautist Georgia Browne. When the full ensemble came together to reinstate the first theme, they charged with a rousing conviction just shy of a rallying cry.
Unique colours (to the modern ear, at least) were unearthed by the players – as in Beethoven’s Scherzo, which stretched cellist Daniel Yeadon into the high register of his instrument while still preserving a surprisingly rich, mellow tone. Such sonorities were true to its era, as was the rather ‘crude’ model of some antiques. Notably, for Beethoven’s Septet, a set of horn crooks (thin metal loops used to extend the horn, as valves had not yet been invented) hung decoratively on the music stand. Only a seasoned hornist such as Anneke Scott could ever so swiftly switch between her crooks, without skipping a beat!
Particularly impressive was the group’s synergy. Despite the intricate layers, all musicians seemed to move as one, matching each other’s breaths, bowing and resolving tempo changes with natural ease. It was hard to believe the ensemble only met a few weeks before – some were visiting from overseas, like bassoonist Lisa Goldberg, whilst others were based locally, like violist Stephen King and double bassist Rob Nairn. Communicating with glances and encouraging nods, they built an effortless rapport that was a delight to watch.
In short, ARCO’s New Perspectives concert was as much a masterclass as a divertimento
In Memoriam: João Donato
By Lyndon PikeJoão Donato, a highly influential figure in the history and evolution of bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, passed away on Monday, July 17th.
Throughout his illustrious career, João Donato recorded over three dozen albums under his own name and collaborated with countless Brazilian and Latin music legends. His musical genius was evident in his versatile style and his ability to captivate audiences with his extraordinary talent.
Born in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil, Donato’s musical journey began at a young age. He taught himself to play the miniature accordion at six and later learned the trombone, an instrument he continued to showcase in his recordings. His talent blossomed under formal piano lessons in Rio de Janeiro, following his family’s relocation in 1945.
From playing at suburban balls as a professional accordionist at 15 to performing at jam sessions frequented by jazz musicians and industry professionals, Donato’s passion and dedication were evident throughout his formative years. He made his recording debut in 1953 with an EP titled João Donato e Seu Conjunto, and his group, Os Namorados, introduced the bossa nova beat with their single Eu Quero Um Samba in 1956.
Donato’s collaborations with guitarist Luiz Bonfa and longtime friend João Gilberto resulted in timeless compositions such as the bossa nova classic Minha Saudade. His debut full-length album, Chá Dançante (1956), produced by Tom Jobim, solidified his position as an emerging force in Brazilian jazz. Relocating to São Paulo, he continued to make strides in his career by joining various musical ensembles.
However, his innovative and sophisticated piano style posed challenges within the traditional music scene. Despite being rejected by numerous Sao Paulo nightclubs in 1959, Donato’s perseverance and desire to refine his craft led him to emigrate to the United States. Over a thirteen-year period, he forged remarkable collaborations with Latin musicians and recorded with esteemed jazz and Latin ensembles, earning him international acclaim.
In 1970, Donato’s pioneering jazz-funk masterpiece, A Bad Donato, showcased his distinctive style and greatly influenced musicians, including the renowned Deodato. Returning to Brazil in 1972, Donato continued to push musical boundaries, collaborating with both Brazilian and American artists.
His diverse body of work included arranging, composing, and producing for prominent musicians and contributing to seminal albums such as Milton Nascimento’s Clube Da Esquina 2. Though he took a decade-long hiatus from recording as a leader, his impact on the music industry remained significant.
He served as the musical director for Gal Costa’s acclaimed Cantar show in 1974, which introduced him to a younger generation of Brazilian artists who later became collaborators. Notable among these collaborations were the albums Quem É Quem (1974), produced by Marcos Valle, and Lugar Comum (1975), recorded in collaboration with Gilberto Gil.
Following a period of arranging, composing, and producing, Donato released the celebrated live album Leiliadas in 1986, marking his triumphant return. His globally acclaimed work continued with Coisas Tao Simples in 1995, which reaffirmed his position as a musical visionary.
Donato’s unwavering dedication to his craft continued into the new millennium. Collaborations with Joyce Moreno, including Tudo Bonito, showcased his ability to craft beautiful compositions and harmonize with fellow musicians. He further demonstrated his prowess with albums like Managarroba (2002), the globally acclaimed Wanda Sá with João Donato (2003) and Aquarius in 2009. Demonstrating his constant innovation, he explored a fusion of jazz, bossa nova, funk, and electro in Donato Elétrico (2016) and, most recently, collaborated and performed live concerts showcasing the Jazz Is Dead project series with Americans Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge on JID007 (2021).
Donato’s artistry encompassd both studio and live performances, producing, and arranging. His legacy is one of innovation, creativity, and mastery. His profound impact on bossa nova and Brazilian jazz will continue to inspire generations to come. He will be remembered as a true icon of the genre, forever etched in the hearts of music lovers around the world.
Concerto Competition 2023: Strings triumph at the Finals Concert
Reviewed by Iris ZengSix young soloists – five string players, one brass – commanded the stage alongside the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) at the Finals Concert of the 39th NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition. While violist Hayley Lau took home the grand prize of $5000, each talented performer demonstrated a maturity well beyond their years.
On this June Sunday afternoon, the Concourse Concert Hall buzzed with energy. Sitting on the judge’s panel were violinist Emily Sun (a previous finalist), and hornist Robert Johnson (ex-Principal horn of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra), while ABC Classic presenter Damien Beaumont compered.
The concert program was ambitious, with Sibelius, Paganini, Strauss and more packed into one afternoon. It was a credit to the KPO’s ArtisticDirector Paul Terracini and his orchestra, that the event ran so smoothly. The KPO players were able to sustain their energy throughout the program, supporting each act with great care and attention – certainly, no small feat given the range of works and quick resets demanded of them!
Opening the program, violinist Sharon Zhao (Meridan School) gave a lyrical introduction to Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Her composure throughout the first movement was evident, but while technically proficient, elements of the fury required in the cadenza tested her virtuosity.
Nonetheless, Zhao set the bar high and was followed by strong performances from cellist Clara Moloney (Fort Street High School) and violinist Teresa Yang (Meridan School). A heartfelt, moving statement was shared by Moloney and the swaying orchestra in the Adagio Moderato movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto; while Yang’s rich tone
soared in Korngold’s romantic Violin Concerto. For such demanding works, these junior finalists gave a confident display – arguably more so than some of their senior counterparts!
Titan Sclavenitis (Sydney Conservatorium High), the sole French hornist in the Finals, bravely tackled Strauss’ Horn Concerto, but Sean Weatherley (Sydney Grammar) who played Chausson’s full Poème for Violin and Orchestra –a more sensitive, subdued work – seemed overpowered by the orchestra at times.
When Hayley Lau (Wenona) came on stage, her performance of Paganini’s Sonata Per La Grand Viola was a showstopper. Wooing the crowd with fast, virtuosic passages and a particularly graceful Cantabile section all played in double-stops, Lau was truly deserving of both the Overall Winner and KPO Players’ Award.
Other winners of the competition included Clara Moloney, who topped the Juniors category; Teresa Yang, Seniors; while violinist Nicole Wang (Wenona) and double-bassist Isabella Teo (Queenswood) won the Multiples Section. Wang and Teo, the final pair, wearing striking red dresses, delivered a boisterous performance of Bottesini’s Gran Duo Concertante, to bring the concert to a vibrant close.
It was inspiring to see all competitors display such passion early on in their promising musical careers. No doubt, we’ll hear more from these rising stars in the future.

FOUNDERS’ STUDIO HIRE
Are you a musician looking to record an audition for an application, or are you wanting to record your own music?
We have a studio ready for you to record in.
Volunteer Spotlight -
Keith Pettigrew
Jazz Committee Chair, Keith Pettigrew, talks with Laurie Smith
How long have you been volunteering with Fine Music and what got you involved?
Six years, but it seems much less! I enjoy being part of the crew at a great broadcaster. I started shortly after retirement, cataloguing our FineJazz collection and progressed to presenting, coordinating material for this Magazine, contributing to our website, and chairing our Jazz Committee. As part of the FineJazz team, I am humbled by the extraordinary depth of knowledge of our volunteer jazz presenters.
Where does your love of music come from? Jazz aside, what music attracts you?
I had a relatively music-free childhood. Then, the gramophone and the World Record Club resulted in new experiences. First Pop and Radio Caroline, and then I was fascinated with folk in the 60s and 70s: something about ballads and protest. But my love of music flowed from my love of the language of mathematics. The recognition of patterns and their evolution is what to me jazz represents. And what really brought jazz into my life was our children’s black South African piano teacher. He had survived apartheid and jail by playing jazz.
What are the challenges in engaging young performers?
Young musicians are trained to be technically exciting and adventurous. They can transpose on the go, and understand that in jazz, there are no bad notes, just missed opportunities to improvise. However, they get little training as entrepreneurs, small business operators, accountants, copyright lawyers, or promoters. And they usually have no recordings to promote themselves.
My core reason for being part of Fine Music is to create opportunities for young musicians to progress their careers. I am pleased with the creation of As It Happened – recordings for broadcast. Whilst it is currently focused on jazz musicians, I am looking to extend it to young classical musicians. We have a clear strategic goal of promoting Australian musicians, so we need to reach out with support as they begin their musical careers: they are the future!
What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the station?
Camaraderie, volunteering, sharing great music. Above all, giving young musicians the chance to be heard, be recognised, and have audiences turn up to their gigs. Music is the soul of life and living musicians need our support. There are too many dead white males on the airwaves!
What music stays forever in your memory?
When I cleared out my CDs and LPs, I kept three albums: live recordings from the Goon Show (arranged by Angela Morley with Max Geldray on harmonica and Ray Ellington and his quartet), Inna Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly, and Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert, an extraordinary piece of improvisation.
What about your other interests?
I have a long engagement with pottery, creating sculptural forms that defy gravity. Like my Tai Chi it is a meditative and energising artform. I love to swim and get to the gym. And grandparenting keeps everything in context.

I Didn’t Get to Where I Am Today
Jason Bruer - Hammerhead Independent BandcampJason Bruer’s third album with his band Hammerhead is a pleasurable pastiche of original compositions written during the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic. These are grand sextet ideas with inspired blowing on the solo spots from the horns, Andrew Robertson (alto, baritone, and flute) and Simon Ferenci (trumpet, flugelhorn), combined with a stellar, spot-on rhythm section with Greg Coffin (piano), Dave Quinn (double bass) and Alex Hirlian (drums). Within the majestic arrangements from Bruer paying tribute to his jazz heroes and family, his assured playing on tenor and soprano
saxophones is always confident and melodic with a full-rounded tone, backed by Hirlian’s allenergy drums shifting the rhythmic drives and grooves. Greg Coffin’s piano solos are inspirational and a measure of his unassuming genius. The music created on favourite tracks, Tumbleweed on George Street, Blues for Shemp and The Yearning, is a testament to the experience these musicians have all had in improvising, without any grandstanding. Here is unpretentious, lyrical music that will greatly appeal to a contemporary jazz audience.

AV2569
Variation form has a long history in classical music, but few examples made it into 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die, and the ABC is unlikely to devote a Classic 100 to it. Nevertheless, English pianist Sarah Beth Briggs, ‘an artist of extraordinary magnetism’ who premiered Hans Gál’s Piano Concerto in 2016, has devoted an album to examples of the form. It is well thought out and programmed, with works, arranged largely chronologically, of increasing solemnity.
She begins with Mozart’s Duport Variations, a delicately graceful work with which he intended to ingratiate himself with the court of the king of Prussia. The
Un’estate Italiana
Lucy Kiely Bandcamp
If you’re seeking to rekindle the romantic memories you have from your last trip to the villages and ports of the Southern Italian coast, then this album will get you started. Sydney vocalist and songwriter Lucy Kiely, who is now happily ensconced, physically and musically, in that region, delivers on her latest recording of eight original love songs, drawing inspiration from the landscape and summer lifestyle of her newly adopted abode. Celebrated worldwide for its natural beauty and picturesque landscapes, the Amalfi is one of the most popular holiday destinations for those seeking love and romance. Her sensitive delivery of these songs on the album brings on those much-coveted feelings, the original compositions imbued
royal connection is continued with Beethoven’s Variations on God Save the King (recorded before the recent ascension to the throne of Charles III), which acts as an aperitif before the same composer’s Variations on an Original Theme, the keystone work of this recital. It displays many ground-breaking features, with each variation in a different key, frequent changes of time signature and tempo and, crucially, of character. The remaining works, by Felix Mendelssohn and Brahms, build on Beethoven’s innovations with music that is serious in mood and substantial in content.
– Paul Cookewith a little bossa nova, swing, and classic jazz. Marina del Cantone, La Luna Sul Mare, and title song Un’estate Italiana evoke images of olive trees, lemon groves, tiny vintage Fiat 500s, and craggy cliffs, with pastel houses covered in bougainvillea which seemingly tumble down to the bright blue sea with a moon shimmering on the water. Singing in both Italian and English, Kiely ably delivers her romantic vocals with aplomb, accompanied by a more than competent band of musicians, including James Mackey on saxophone, Andrew Scott on piano and arrangements, and Arthur Washington on guitar. Do yourself a favour, flip open a bottle of limoncello on your terrace and reminisce about summers abroad.

Happiness introduces the action that finds Venus and Vulcan blaming Venus’ son, Cupid, for their unhappy marriage. As Cupid flees their anger, he encounters Flattery. In his escape, he loses his golden bow and arrow. After Friendship pleads his case with the innkeeper, Avarice, Cupid is allowed to stay at the inn. However, when Friendship falls in love with Deceit, following the misuse of one of Cupid’s stolen arrows, Cupid can no longer pay his board and is imprisoned. Avarice then sells Cupid on to Deceit in exchange for a golden necklace. As Deceit parades Cupid in a cage, Venus and Vulcan arrive. Horrified, Venus buys her son’s freedom with a jewel but then Avarice, unhappy that the golden necklace is really brass, unmasks Deceit. Cupid, when freed, retrieves his golden bow and arrows and reverses the spell cast on Friendship. Finally, Cupid requests that Friendship intervene between Venus and Vulcan, ensuring a happy ending.

LUBAVA: Marianna Tarassova, mezz
THE SEA-KING: Sergei Alekashkin, bass Kirov Ch & O/Valery Gergiev.
Philips 442 138-2
2:53
Based on an historical 12th century character, the story is embellished with mythical elements.
Sadko suggests to the city merchants that Novgorod would be more prosperous if a river joined Lake Ilmen to the ocean but they laugh at him. Later, as Sadko is singing by the lakeside, a swan appears and changes into Volkhova, the Sea Princess, who tells him how to catch three golden fish which, she says, will lead to a long sea voyage and his fortune. Sadko's wife, Lubava, is distressed when he announces that he is leaving to seek his fortune.
The merchants are assembled at the quayside of the lake. Sadko tells them that he is going to find a fortune by catching three golden fish but they mock him. When he catches the golden fish, the merchants agree that he can take some of their ships on his voyage. Among the merchants are a Viking, an Indian and a Venetian who sing of their homelands. Sadko decides to sail to Venice.
On the return voyage, Sadko’s ships are laden with treasure but the winds drop and they are becalmed. The crew throw treasure into the sea to propitiate the Sea-King but the winds do not return. Sadko is left behind clinging to a log when the winds pick up while he is overboard.
He enters the realm of the Sea-King where he sings to the King and Queen, winning the hand of their daughter, Volkhova. The boisterous wedding celebrations cause a storm that destroys the realm of the Sea-King. Sadko and Volkhova escape on a sea shell and the end of the pagan king is announced by an apparition of St. Nicholas of Mozhaysk.
Back in Novgorad, while Sadko is sleeping by the lakeside, Volkhova bids him farewell, disappears and is changed into the River Volkhova that now links Lake Ilmen with the sea. Lubava finds her husband asleep and wakes him. He believes that his voyage was nothing but a dream but the sight of the new river and his fleet of ships in the lake convinces him that he is now a very wealthy man.
Everyone says there is no justice on earth; No, I can no longer resist, from Mozart and Salieri (1898). Sergei Alekashkin, bass; Philharmonia O/Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Sylva Varescu, a successful cabaret singer from Budapest, is in love with Prince Edwin, who has promised to marry her. His disapproving parents arrange his marriage to Countess Stasi who does not love him. Sylva
leaves on an American tour. On her return, Sylva visits Edwin's palace in Vienna and Edwin's father informs her that, if she marries Edwin without first having achieved noble rank through some other route, her role in society could be merely that of a Gypsy Princess. As her entrée into society, Sylva pretends to have married Edwin’s friend, the nobleman Boni who falls in love with Edwin’s fiancée Stasi. Edwin tells Sylva that his parents will accept her if she pretends to have divorced Boni as she has already entered society through the marriage. Sylva realizes that she is better than they, snubs Edwin and his father and leaves.
Feri, also a nobleman, is about to accompany Sylva and the cabaret troupe on another American tour when, in a Viennese hotel, he recognizes Edwin's mother as a retired cabaret singer from Budapest. Edwin's mother joins Sylva and Edwin with Boni and Stasi as they leave for America, all unwittingly heading to safety as World War I is about to begin. The story begins with the struggle between the Britons, who are loyal to King Arthur, and the Saxons, who sacrifice to their gods then have a drunken orgy. King Arthur's troops defeat them. Shepherds entertain Arthur's fiancée, Emmeline. The Saxon magician Oswald then tries to seduce Emmeline by creating frost and snow. Meanwhile naked sirens are trying to seduce Arthur but he rejects them and brings Britons and Saxons into unity. His magician Merlin conjures up winds, then calms the seas, as England’s farmers and fishermen celebrate the wealth they have created. Venus praises England as the Fairest Isle.

Cupid, the son of Venus, invites shepherds and shepherdesses, to enjoy pastoral pleasures. Venus, goddess of love, has fallen in love with a human, Adonis. As they prepare for lovemaking, huntsmen are heard singing of an enormous boar. Venus urges Adonis to join the hunt. In a comic scene, Cupid teaches a group of Little Cupids about the ways of love. After the death of Princess Libuše, the women have lost the right to choose their own husbands. Under the leadership of the warrior Vlasta, they declare war on the men who are lead by Libuse’s husband, Prince Přemysl. A young warrior, Ctirad, comes to Libuše's castle for the weapons kept in the tomb of the dead princess. He enters the tomb and is disturbed by a group of warriors, led by Šárka, who have come to secure Libuše's crown for Vlasta, the ruler of the women. Ctirad, obstructs their path and Šárka and her warriors flee.
Šárka becomes aware of her growing feelings for Ctirad but, overcome by the desire for revenge, she plans to trap him. She orders herself bound to a tree and for her warriors to hide. Ctirad is lured by Šárka's appeals to be set free. She tells him that she was tied up by Vlasta for her failed attempt to secure Libuše's crown. Enchanted by Šárka's beauty, Ctirad confesses his love for her and she almost succumbs to the temptation to become his
wife but, remembering her resolve, she signals for her warriors to come out of hiding and kill Ctirad.
Šárka arrives as the men are preparing the pyre to burn Citrad’s body. She confesses what she has done in front of everyone before jumping onto the pyre and stabbing herself. The pyre is lit and everyone marvels over the power of love.

Death and Harlequin (Life) lament the way that both life and death have lost their meaning in the modern world. The Drummer-girl arrives with a proclamation from the Emperor: a declaration of war. She attempts to conscript Death to the cause, but Death refuses to cooperate. The Emperor continues his campaign by telephone.
A mysterious epidemic breaks out but no one is able to die. A soldier and a girl from the enemy camp meet on the battlefield but are unable to kill each other. They fall in love and the Drummer-girl tries unsuccessfully to seduce the soldier back to the fight.
The Emperor looks into the mirror and sees Death reflected there. Death offers to resume his work, if the Emperor agrees to be his first victim. The Emperor allows himself to be taken, realising that this represents the only hope for humanity.

Salieri, A. Armida. Opera in three acts.
Libretto by Marco Coltellini, after Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata. First performed Vienna, 1771.
ARMIDA: Lenneke Ruiten, sop
RINALDO: Florie Valiquette, sop
ISMENE: Teresa Iervolino, mezz
UBALDO: Ashley Riches
2:05
Armida, Queen of Damascus, has used her magic powers to repel the Crusaders seeking to retake Jerusalem. She has entranced one of the crusader knights, Rinaldo, and taken him to her magic island. His colleague, Ubaldo, arrives to rescue him as the opera begins, slaying the demons guarding the island. He discovers a palace with beautiful gardens, in which Armida’s followers are singing and dancing. Her confidante Ismene alerts them to Ubaldo’s presence and they entice him to join them, but he declines. Ismene summons more demons and he despatches them using a magic sword. Ubaldo prays for help in retrieving Rinaldo.
In the palace gardens, Armida and Rinaldo (enchanted by her spell and her beauty) sing of their love. Armida leaves him alone, and Rinaldo declares that he wants to see her in his dreams. Ubaldo arrives and ties his magic shield to a tree, finding Rinaldo asleep. Rinaldo wakes, sees himself reflected in the shield, and recalls his mission as a crusader. Armida returns and runs away, taking fright when she sees the shield. He is about to pursue her when Ubaldo returns and reminds him of his duty.
Armida prays in a cavern to the gods of the underworld for defence against the shield. Ismene tells her that Rinaldo is about to leave the island. Armida goes to him and tearfully begs him to either stay or kill her. Although freed from her spell, Rinaldo hesitates to do either. She faints, waking to find that he has left. Bewailing her fate, Armida commands that the island be destroyed and, vowing revenge, departs on a dragon-drawn winged chariot. Gluck, C. Sinfonia; Chaconne, from Paride ed Elena (1770). Gabrieli Players/Paul McCreesh.

World’s Best Opera Boxes
La Scala is a world-famous opera house located in Milan. It opened on by Mozart’s archrival Antonio Salieri, and was originally called the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala. The boxes here are spread over a variety of floors and are again encased in red. Think red curtains, red silk wallpaper and red upholstered seating. Boxes can be booked privately for parties of between four and six. Unusually no food is available in the VIP spaces so you have to make do with the foyer bars. The box in the Arturo Toscanini section has a bar
Grand Opera House, Belfast
The Grand Opera House in Belfast offer boxes with gilt fronts and are dressed in crushed red velvet. The Irish love good hospitality and this shows because in these boxes you are offered canapes and chilled drinks. When the lights go down a box of luxury chocolates appears at interval a dedicated wait staff will provide ice cream. Definitely an experience.
