One of Fine Music Sydney’s core missions is to encourage and foster emerging local talent, which we are doing with an array of scholarships, awards and programs. We are therefore delighted to welcome acclaimed violist and conductor Roger Benedict to the role of Fine Music Sydney’s new Patron of Emerging Artists. Catherine Peake talks to him in this month’s magazine. A musical career is a difficult path to tread at the best of times, and the pandemic has put the squeeze on already meagre opportunities, so we intend to reinvigorate the occasional columns we run on emerging artists in Fine Music Magazine with a regular monthly feature. We kick off this month with an interview with Ayşe Göknur Shanal, whose Storytellers Ensemble (cover photo) has performed its first formal concert in the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House on 31 July.* Finally, take a break from wall-to-wall Covid coverage and make sure you read Alex Siegers’ review of Leave Your Mark, the debut EP from recently-graduated group of jazz performers 343 Brass Band from the Sydney Conservatorium. They promise music that makes you smile! We all need some of that, don’t we? *potentially subject to lockdown restrictions as we went to press david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Josquin: Master of the Notes Susan Foulcher highlights an exceptional career

Josquin des Prez has been called the first celebrity in the history of music, but what did a 16th century celebrity actually look like? What was it about his music that earned him this reputation? For a musician of such legendary status, we know very little of his biography. Our knowledge of his birth, his life and his movements are vague and riddled with gaps. Even his musical output is clouded by misattribution. On further investigation, this misattribution tells us a lot about Josquin’s celebrity status. His music was so revered during his lifetime, and for the century after it, that publishers knew a work by Josquin would have a sizeable market; anonymous compositions were consequently attributed to Josquin by music copyists to increase their sales. The fact that other composers also wanted to boast a connection with Josquin, or imitate his style in order to improve their prospects, makes the waters around Josquin’s actual output murky indeed.

Granger Historical Picture Archive / Alamy Stock Photo

The newly developed technology of printing made possible wide dissemination of Josquin’s music, and he was certainly the favourite of the first printers. Ottaviano Petrucci’s first printed collection of motets in 1502 awarded pride of place to Josquin’s Ave Maria… Virgo Serena. Petrucci published three volumes of Josquin’s Masses, while no other composer was allotted more than one. The first of these volumes was the first collection ever of printed music by a single composer!

Josquin was the first composer who was in-demand financially and artistically in the cultural centres of the world. He may have been born in a small town near the French-Belgian border, but he was soon awarded appointments to the most prestigious positions in the French and Italian courts. By 1504, he had been in the service of René of Anjou, Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, the Dukes of Milan and Ferrara, Popes Innocent VIII and Alexander VI, and possibly two kings of France. Duke Ercole I of Ferrara appointed Josquin at double the rate of the recommended Isaac because Josquin had the reputation which would ‘place a crown’ upon the Duke’s chapel.

Josquin’s reputation survived long after his death in 1521. Composers wrote laments in his honour and theorists agreed that he was the greatest composer – the most varied and the most profound – of the high Renaissance. In 1538, Martin Luther called him ‘the master of the notes’. His influence could be seen for hundreds of years, with composers like Fux, J.S. Bach and even Mozart using Josquin’s themes within their own works. When all is said and done, what better measure of celebrity is there than your music is still entertaining, still relevant and still revered 500 years after your death? Tune in to Baroque and Before on Friday 27 August, the 500th anniversary of Josquin’s death, to hear a wide selection of his pieces and celebrate the music that created the myth.

What was it about Josquin’s music that made him such hot property? He wrote in the same vocal forms as other composers of the time, but his mastery of compositional techniques, his formidable imagination and sense of melody, advanced these forms in ways that became the benchmark for later generations of composers. In short, his music served as a model for much of the 16th century.

Roger Benedict – In Conversation Catherine Peake talks to Roger Benedict, our new Patron of Emerging Artists As a viola soloist as well as conductor of major orchestras, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, you perform regularly on the concert platform and podium. What are the highlights of your recent events?

Renowned violist and conductor Roger Benedict is Fine Music Sydney’s new Patron of Emerging Artists. Fine Music’s support for emerging artists includes administering awards such as the Stefan Kruger Scholarship, the Young Composer Award and the Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship, as well as broadcasting regular programs featuring emerging musicians.

I feel fortunate to be able to perform both as a viola player and conductor. It’s a dream job! I loved conducting the Sydney Symphony’s Symphony under the Stars concerts this January – it was the first time in nearly a year that the members of the orchestra had all performed together. And I am about to celebrate 20 years of leading the Sydney Symphony Fellowship Program with a week of concerts, culminating in a performance of Bruckner’s majestic Fourth symphony with an orchestra made up of our alumni. Mentoring and working alongside all these incredible young musicians and seeing them develop into fully-fledged professionals has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career.

Congratulations on your appointment as Fine Music Sydney’s new Patron of Emerging Artists! What can you tell us about your role? I hope I can help draw attention to the wealth of emerging talent we have in Australia, and make sure there are plenty of opportunities for that talent to be heard on Fine Music Sydney. I’ll be involved in awarding the Fine Music scholarships as well. These give deserving young musicians a valuable helping hand to further their careers.

I am passionate about using

You have an interest in promoting music for community outreach and support. Can you tell us about some of the projects you have been involved in?

music to raise awareness and

support for charitable causes.

I regularly take the SSO Fellows to a NSW prison to run workshops and perform for the inmates. It is incredibly satisfying to see how the inmates respond to the music and equally satisfying to see the musicians develop new skills in engaging with this unique audience. I am passionate about using music to raise awareness and support for charitable causes, and have conceived and conducted several fundraising concerts with an ensemble I founded, Orchestra for Life. These include the Concert for Life series that has raised significant sums for suicide prevention and Indigenous mental health charities.

In your previous positions as coach of the European Union Youth Orchestra and conductor of the Australian Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra (UK), one of the focal points of your work has been the teaching and training of young musicians within an orchestral setting. What is it that makes a good orchestral player? Good orchestral players are brilliant soloists in their own right – to succeed in an audition for an orchestral position you must perform solo repertoire to a very high standard. But then you also need to be able to adapt your playing and musical personality to become a real team player and you must learn how to listen actively and match your sound and style of playing to those around you. In addition, you have to understand how all your colleagues tick and know what everyone’s role is. Oh, and having a sense of humour is essential!

06

What do you have planned for the future? More conducting, both with professional orchestras and with the orchestra at the Sydney Conservatorium, where I am Chief Conductor. Wearing my viola playing hat, I’ve just finished recording a new album coming out later this year on the ABC Classics label with the fabulous pianist Simon Tedeschi (also a Fine Music patron). It features gorgeous music for viola and piano by two of our favourite composers, Ravel and Debussy.

Happy Birthday, and Thanks for All the Music: In Celebration of Joby Talbot Maddy Briggs explores the musical world of modern journeyman Joby Talbot

Talbot’s score for The Royal Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (2011) demonstrates a broader sense of harmony between disparate elements. The score shines with its mallet-punctuated whimsy, underpinned by moments of curt barking brass. For the first full-length commission by The Royal Ballet in 20 years, Talbot’s music seamlessly knits together a light playfulness and a darker, brooding chaos that does perfect justice to Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale. Prior to Alice, Talbot had already proven himself an innovative player in scoring for dance. One such instance was his collaboration with musician Deru (aka Benjamin Wynn) on Genus (2007) for the Paris Opera Ballet, a bold step away from his previous work. The soundtrack delves into electroacoustic and trance territory – stretches of vocal and string arrangements are progressively warped by electronics. The ebb and flow between the purity of the natural instruments and their electronic corruption finds a striking beauty that becomes only accessible through this forged amity. Across just the microcosm of his work for dance, Talbot’s fluid mobilisation of genre and instrumentation demonstrates the strength and multiplicity of his voice as a modern composer.

British composer Joby Talbot does not believe in the limitations of genre. Born in London in 1971, Talbot’s early ventures into music displayed a dichotomous approach which has become a powerful hallmark of his compositional style. While studying at the Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, Talbot joined British baroque-pop band The Divine Comedy as keyboardist and arranger. His early compositional works included scoring for the British comedy, The League of Gentlemen, and Luminescence (1997), an orchestral work commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic. Talbot has since produced further pop arrangements for musicians including Tom Jones and Paul McCartney; his ballet score, Chroma (2006), connects his original compositions with his arrangements of songs by The White Stripes. In celebration of Talbot’s 50th birthday, let us delve into some highlights of his impressive discography… Path of Miracles (2005) was Talbot’s first largescale commission. Composed for vocal ensemble Tenebrae, it’s an hour-long musical odyssey along the Catholic pilgrimage route to Santiago. Talbot draws out stunningly varied colours from the choir, slowly unfurling from moments of fierce power into stretches of ethereal beauty; the piece remains entirely gripping across its span.

Talbot’s latest credit sees his fantastically bombastic orchestration brought to the animated children’s comedy Sing (2016), as well as its upcoming sequel, Sing 2. Leading audiences through the grey space between pop hits, Talbot’s score for Sing 2 promises to delight, as the next step in a compositional career made remarkable by a unique dexterity and balance.

Talbot’s debut as film-composer was for the cult classic Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005). The score is perhaps his best-known work and was the perfect vehicle for the incredible versatility of his compositional approach. One of the fruits of this is the score’s artful melding of electronic and acoustic instruments; the title track finds retro-futuristic analogue synthesiser arpeggios nestled within a rich orchestration. A re-orchestration of the Eagles’ The Journey of the Sorcerer borrows from earlier radio and television adaptations of the novel as a nod to loyal Douglas Adams fans. It exemplifies yet another beautiful balance struck between pop and cinematic sensibilities.

Emerging Artist – The Storytellers Ensemble In a new series featuring emerging artists, Catherine Peake talks to Ayşe Göknur Shanal about her music and the new chamber group The Storytellers Ensemble.

As a well-known soprano, you have performed with Opera Australia and the Turkish State Opera as well as at numerous festivals. Do you have a favourite style or period of music?

Soprano Ayşe Göknur Shanal is a former recipient of a Fine Music Emerging Artists Award and has performed and collaborated with numerous musicians both in Australia and internationally. Catherine Peake talks to her about working with The Storytellers Ensemble, which shares her interest in new musical repertoire, forms, styles, and genres.

As a classically trained singer who possesses a spinto/ dramatic soprano voice, I don’t fit the mould of a regular opera singer. If you ask my colleagues and those who know me in the profession, they will tell you that’s an understatement! Within the classical music realm, I am very much at home performing everything from Handel and Mozart to Puccini and Verdi, as well as art song, concert, and oratorio. In September, I’ll be presenting an entire program of Byzantine music by the nun composer and hymnographer Kassia, for Baroquefest Canowindra, so that is an entirely new style I am excited to explore. Outside the boundaries of the western classical genre, I perform Greek, Turkish, Kurdish, Cypriot, Indian, and Persian traditional music, as well as introducing the authentic Sufi tradition to wider audiences in an informative manner. All these styles and genres allow me to be a more rounded musician; to be able to look at the world from a wider perspective; to see the bigger picture of humanity and our purpose and place in the universe. The short answer is no, I don’t have a favourite style or period of music. I love music. It is my passion. A lifelong love affair.

Who comprises The Storytellers Ensemble and how did it come about?  There are four of us: Violinist Monica Cichon, cellist Anna Rex, pianist/conductor Eugenie Tamplon, and me. We met each other through the music school Master Piano Institute where three of us teach. We did a very spontaneous soirée there back in April, which was received very well and generated a lot of excitement. It ignited a lot of inspiration and momentum and the ideas just started coming to us for other projects and concerts. We knew we were all deeply passionate about chamber music and we didn’t want to be a mere ‘mouthpiece’, performing standard repertoire by regular masters.

10

What do you and The Storytellers Ensemble have planned? Are there any plans to repeat your opera house concert if people would like to attend?

As the winner of several awards, including being an alumna of Fine Music’s Emerging Artists program, do you have any advice to give musicians in the early stages of their careers?

Our Sydney Opera House concert programme Piazzolla – A Century of Tango, planned for 31 July, COVID lockdown willing, has received a lot of interest and there has been a knock-on effect. So we are taking the program to the ACT, Melbourne, regional NSW and other music festivals. Nuevo Tango, this music style which was developed by Piazzolla himself, is intoxicating, passionate and supercharged with emotion. It is so much fun to perform as an ensemble, plus we are extremely lucky to have esteemed Tango dance master Pedro Florentino Alvarez on board. Apart from that, we are in the process of developing more concerts for the Utzon Room at SOH, as well as at very special heritage buildings with intimate settings around Sydney. We are looking forward to bringing some wonderful and exciting music to our audiences and sharing memorable ‘stories’ with them.

Oh my gosh, so much to say. Here are some ‘pearls of wisdom’ that have stayed with me, mainly for singers but also applicable to all musicians. Going into competitions was never about winning and collecting trophies and money. My primary and only intention has always been about connecting with the audience and that has not changed throughout the years. Secondly, get a teacher who puts you first, not their own agenda or career, and who is going to bring out the best in you; a teacher who is going to inspire you, protect your sense of curiosity, joy and passion for the artform. Before I started teaching, I made a promise: I will always make sure my students walk out of the studio feeling happier and better about themselves and their singing. Thirdly, don’t become insular. There is an entire world outside of singing and music. Live it. Experience it. Have an awareness of what is happening outside your bubble, otherwise you will have no depth to offer to your music, your interpretation or artistic expression. Keep your ego in check. Your voice or instrument does not belong to you. It is a gift that has been entrusted to you. Use it for the betterment of mankind. My last pearl is what Dame Joan and Richard Bonynge gave me. Hasten slowly!

Pergolesi’s Olympic Opera James Nightingale looks at a jewel from a life cut short

The founding of the modern Olympic Games was based on the Ancient Greek contests of strength, speed and agility that took place on Mount Olympus between the heroes and athletes of the many Greek nation states. Along with the games, there would be story-telling and drama as the lives of gods and kings were staged for the crowds of visitors and onlookers.

The first composer to use Metastasio’s L’Olimpiade was Antonio Caldara and this work premiered in 1733 in Vienna. The following year saw a production by Vivaldi in Venice and the year after, a young Neapolitan composer, Giovanni Pergolesi, mounted a production in Rome. Pergolesi had been overlooked by the new Bourbon rulers of Naples for the 1735 season and found in the Roman Teatro Tordinona, a venue that while welcoming, did not have the finances to support a chorus or provide appropriate stage scenery. The first performance is reputed to have been a debacle and Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade was only performed once before a number of events caused all theatres in Rome to temporarily close.

Operas of the Baroque period were often based upon Greek and Roman legends, so it’s no surprise that the ancient Olympic Games would be amongst the subjects of opera from this time. The Olympic Games provide the setting for a work of dramatic poetry by the most famous Italian writer of the 18th century, Pietro Metastasio. The work of Metastasio is synonymous with opera seria, with his words being used by one composer after another to create musical dramas for the courts in which they worked. These composers included Antonio Caldara in Vienna, Johann Adolf Hasse in Dresden, and Niccòlo Jommelli in Stuttgart, not to mention the many composers competing with one another in the rival city-states of Italy itself. Most prominent amongst the Italian centres of the early 1730s were Naples, Venice and Rome, and we find that in the few years after Metastasio completed his libretto for L’Olimpiade, each of these Italian cities played a part in this tale of prophecy, loyalty, love, deception and physical prowess.

L’Olimpiade is Pergolesi’s most substantial work but it owes its fame to one aria in particular, Se cerca, se dice – If she comes looking, if she comes asking – sung by the character of Megacle. This aria and others would find their way into pasticci operas (operas assembled from the music of many different composers) across Europe. Little more than a year after the Rome debacle, the 26-year-old Pergolesi died, leaving a few wonderful works and a legend that only grew through the 18th century and beyond. At the Opera, Wednesday 4 August, 8pm

The basis of the libretto was an episode from Herodotus’ Histories – the Trial of the Suitors from Book VI – involving the interlinked lives of Megacle, Licida, Argene, Clistene and his daughter Aristea. The main dramatic crux of the opera is the love triangle between Megacle, Licida and Aristea, with the characters of Argene and Clistene providing the surprise revelations and dramatic impetus that bring the story to its conclusion. Deception is rife as Megacle impersonates Licida, Argene pretends to be a shepherdess – and who is Licida anyway? The Games themselves provide the setting but take place off stage: there is no sense of sporting competition within the action at all.

Great Jazz from Fine Music: The Duke Favourite Albums from the Fine Music Jazz Crew

The favourite albums

In recent articles, we have broached the central role of improvisation in jazz and the contribution of J.S. Bach as re-imagined by Jacques Loussier, the magic of Keith Jarrett, the scat singing of Ella Fitzgerald and George Benson. This month, we focus on favourite albums of the Fine Music Jazz crew from one of the greats of jazz, Duke Ellington. Born in Washington DC in 1899, the era of classic jazz and ragtime, his parents were both pianists, one favouring parlour music and the other opera. Born Edward, the ‘Duke’ epithet came from childhood friends as a result of racial pride shown by his family in the era of Jim Crow laws, and his mother’s dignified friends. His first composition was Soda Fountain Rag while working in a soda café, but still before he could read or write music. Formed in 1923, the Duke Ellington Orchestra transformed jazz into a sophisticated art form. An eloquent and elegant figure on stage, Duke Ellington inspired both audiences and band-members. He had no formal training as a composer, yet his music was distinctive and so often perfectly matched the soloists for whome he wrote it. Touring the orchestra for extended periods of time was Ellington’s way of bringing his music to the people. Keeping the orchestra on the road was one of his biggest challenges, successfully achieved through the love and admiration band members had for him.

Duke Ellington’s 70th Birthday Concert – Duke Ellington (Blue Note, 1970) Nominated by Chris Wetherall – Jazz Pulse – Mondays at 7:00pm This double album ranks as one of Duke Ellington’s finest recordings, a live performance recorded at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester UK. The album is an excellent feel for how the Duke’s ensembles sounded live, providing many highlights and definitive versions of Ellington’s Rockin’ in Rhythm and Strayhorn’s Take the A Train, an outstanding tenor sax battle on In Triplicate with Paul Gonsalves, an extraordinary Satin Doll with a miraculous trumpet solo by Cat Anderson, and an amazing 16 ½ minute, nine song medley.

He is widely considered a pivotal influence in the development of jazz, moving through ragtime, the dance era of the Charleston and the street rhythms of Afro-American Harlem, through swing, and into the big band sounds and in his own words ‘beyond category’. He sought out musicians with distinguishing styles, and worked closely with composer and fellow pianist Billy Strayhorn, creating a distinctive big band sound over a 50-year career.

It has often been described as an essential gem in every serious jazz collection. And Chris Wetherall’s reason for nominating it? Well apart from just about worshipping the Duke in those days, he was in the audience at the concert!

For Ellington – Modern Jazz Quartet (East West, 1988)

Isfahan – by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn From The Far East Suite – Duke Ellington Orchestra (Bluebird Records, 1966)

Nominated by Lyn Chong – Jazz After Hours – Sundays at 10:00pm More than a tribute album, the Modern Jazz Quartet is pretty much at its best, playing five original Duke Ellington compositions and a piece by Ellington’s long-standing colleague Billy Strayhorn. The album also features pianist and leader John Lewis’s titletrack For Ellington and vibraphonist Milt Jackson’s Maestro EKE, both of which capture the spirit of ‘Ellingtonia’. This is not a copy of Ellington, but those elements of Ellington’s music that give credence to the black experience in music; blues, work-songs and spiritual underpinnings.

Nominated by Robert Vale - Jazz Sketches - Wednesdays at noon The Penguin Guide to Jazz suggests that Isfahan is arguably the most beautiful item of Duke Ellington’s and Billy Strayhorn’s entire 30-year output. It features the alto sax of Johnny Hodges, the longtime soloist in Ellington’s ensembles. Isfahan was originally called Elf when Strayhorn composed it before the 1963 Ellington Orchestra world tour that included Iran. Curiously, it did not become a regular element in Ellington’s portfolio.

Lewis shares Ellington’s precept of establishing the composition and giving freewill to the soloist, summed up by the comment attributed to Ellington: “You have a guy who can hit five superb notes from a trumpet. The question is how to use those five notes.” The Quartet’s habitual formal attire at concerts is attributed to Ellington’s dress code. And why has Lyn Chong nominated this album? “Ah. Very laid back. Relaxing. Good with an afternoon cuppa.”

Volunteer Spotlight Teresa White Pamela Newling talks to Teresa White, program editor, receptionist and adventurous spirit

Teresa’s desire to work in radio began in 1960 when she left school and wanted to get a job at the BBC in London, the city in which she was born and educated. While the opportunity didn’t arise, after more than half a century had passed, Teresa volunteered for 2MBS Fine Music Sydney in 2014. She says: “I very much enjoy working as one of the program editors during the week and as receptionist on Sunday afternoons, where I meet our presenters, welcome Enjoy, Learn and Discuss participants, and greet musicians. I like feeling useful and enjoy the company of the other volunteers and staff. At last, I’m working at a radio station!”

I enjoy a wide variety of music,

including jazz, world music, blues, light classics...the list is endless.

Life has always involved music for Teresa. She says: “I’ve always loved music and singing. I learnt to play the piano and have sung ever since I was very young. I met my husband at a youth club in London. We married in Papua New Guinea, had three children and moved to Sydney 13 years later. We both came from musical backgrounds and have shared many harmonious experiences!” Musicals and choirs have featured in all the places Teresa has lived. She sang and played guitar in Papua New Guinea — no television there at that time. She comments proudly, “Our three children and seven grandchildren are all talented in music, singing and dancing!”

Teresa’s favourite music is Fado (Portuguese blues) and she says: “I enjoy a wide variety of music, including jazz, world music, blues, light classics … the list is endless”. She describes a magical evening when she and her husband saw Mariza, a Portuguese Fado singer, perform at the Opera House: “Everything about Mariza is mesmerising.” She says “I’ve always loved listening to local musicians and singers in various pubs in Cork, London, York and Sydney, sometimes performing in them myself.” Teresa’s a capella group Unaccompanied Baggage performs live music at intimate places like the Camelot Lounge, bringing great joy.

Teresa’s adventurous spirit gave her opportunities to live and work in interesting secretarial roles in London, Paris, Papua New Guinea, Melbourne and Sydney. After retiring, she volunteered at a Sydneybased Afghan charity organisation.

Teresa finds time for interests too many to mention, but includes painting, keeping up her French, cryptic crosswords, walking, and … 2MBS Fine Music Sydney!

Live Performance Review Tessa Miles reviews Tony and Olivier award-winning musical Come From Away

There is something magical about an official opening night for a musical. This may be the red carpet, the flashing camera lights from photographers, the celebrities I don’t recognise or the glitz and glamour of it all. But the experience of attending an invitation-only opening night did not detract from the magnificence that is Come from Away. For those unfamiliar, it’s the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and a small town in Newfoundland, Canada, which welcomed them during one of recent history’s darkest days. When the US airspace closed for the first time on September 11, 2001, 38 planes were diverted to Gander International Airport and nearly 7000 people from over 100 countries found themselves on an island known to locals as ‘The Rock’. This musical highlights the fears, nerves, and uneasiness of the developing situation as well as the hospitality, generosity and kindness shown

by the people of Newfoundland. In a matter of five days, thousands of strangers became family, and it is this inspiring story of their experiences that is told by this award-winning musical. It is hard to believe that this story wasn’t formulated by Hollywood writers and storytellers, but is the shared experience of a recent historical event. The musical, currently playing in Sydney’s Capitol Theatre until August, was delayed last year due to the COVID pandemic, an appropriately fitting situation reflecting the nature of the show. With a duration of 100 minutes and no interval, the audience is taken on an emotional journey through the stories that were untold until now of the scenes of chaos, anxiety, and uncertainty. This shifts to a display of unity, celebration, and inspiration, delivering elements of comedy and toe-tapping music, while asking those in the audience to call upon their memories of where they were during that fateful day almost 20 years ago.

The members of the cast, a mix of Australian and American talent, each play several different characters, executed in a way that is easy to follow on a stage where the scenery barely changes. Meticulous choreography, with the assistance of some jackets and chairs, depicts different scenes, from aircraft to a bar, and Canada’s beloved coffee chain, Tim Hortons. The music, infused with the Celtic culture that makes up part of Newfoundland, will have you tapping your toes, laughing and crying, all within a few seconds. One song involving a yellow fishing hat, a shot of rum, and a freshly caught Newfoundland cod, perfectly captures the tradition of a Screech, the ceremony which makes the audience honorary Newfoundlanders, and has it roaring with laughter. Come from Away deserves just as much recognition and accolade as Hamilton, with so much of this previously unknown side of a historical life-changing event packed into less than two hours. It is a jovial and heart-warming celebration as much as it is a recognition of the overwhelming generosity and kindness of the people of Newfoundland. A not-tobe-missed musical, and don’t forget to bring tissues!

CD REVIEWS Dutilleux: Le Loup and other works

Adam Walker; Juliana Koch; Jonathan Davies; Sinfonia of London/John Wilson Chandos CHSA 5263 Le Loup is a ballet by the French composer Henri Dutilleux, dating from 1953. It’s a work in the tradition of French ballet music of the mid 20th century, featuring vivid orchestration, energetic rhythms and memorable melodies. Originally staged by Roland Petit’s Ballet de Champs-Élysées, Dutilleux thought the complete ballet to be intrinsically linked to the choreography and would not sanction concert performance of the work. Thankfully, he eventually changed his mind. This new recording from the Sinfonia of London, conducted by John Wilson, is a splendid reading of this

ballet. Completing the CD are three of Dutilleux’s woodwind pieces, newly orchestrated by Kenneth Hesketh. These new versions of the Flute Sonatine, Oboe Sonata and the Sarabande et Cortege for bassoon masterfully capture Dutilleux’s style from that time. Taking cues from Dutilleux’s early symphonies and Le Loup, Hesketh has brought out the multilayered textures of the original piano parts in brilliant orchestral colour. The woodwind soloists are of the highest calibre, ensuring that this is a most enjoyable recording. - James Nightingale

The Persephone Project

Hope Csutoros; Helen Mountfort; Phillipa Safey helenmountfort.bandcamp.com This album is the fourth by New Zealand-born composer and cellist Helen Mountfort. A long-time resident of Melbourne, Mountfort has written and performed music with Not Drowning, Waving, and My Friend The Chocolate Cake. She has also been involved in music for theatre, film, television and dance. Her previous albums are Upside Down at the Bottom of the World, compositions for small ensemble commissioned by the ABC for the celebration of the centenary of Federation; The Naked Cello, works for solo cello; and Ebb, ambient lullabies for cello and piano.

Leave Your Mark 343 Brass Band Self Released

Brass bands are FUN, and Leave Your Mark is no exception. Released on 22 June 2021, it is the debut EP from Sydney-based group 343 Brass Band. The album features bright, brassy original jazz and pop, with compositions by bandleader Heather Prowse, made the more memorable by the signature funloving energy and tight arrangements by Prowse and brothers Nathan and Jacob Parks. The band comprises Heather Prowse and Kyle Eardley, trumpet; Nathan Parks, tenor sax; Kali Gillen, baritone sax; Jacob Parks, sousaphone; and Tom McCracken, drums.

20

The Persephone Project comprises instrumental music composed by Mountfort and performed by the composer on cello, together with violinist Hope Csutoros (a long-term collaborator, in both My Friend The Chocolate Cake and, more recently, ‘gypsy tango quintet’ Cosmo Cosmolino, named for a work of fiction by Helen Garner) and pianist Phillipa Safey. There are twelve atmospheric pieces ranging from moody tango rhythms to innovative modern works. Perfect listening to unwind with in the evening. - Dan Bickel

The bops keep coming with Ain’t Gonna Steal Your Man, a cheeky tune featuring all the band singing “this one goes out to the people who are dating our platonic male friends” in chorus, featuring baritone saxophonist Kali Gillen and trumpeter Kyle Eardley weaving some truly funky lines. For a group of Conservatoriumeducated kids from Sydney, Leave Your Mark perfectly treads the line between the military precision of marching band music and the freedom and improvisation of Dixieland. - Alex Siegers

Miss Lucy Havens requests Thoroughbass Wirripang Wirr 110

This album, subtitled ‘Music-making in the homes of early Australian settlers’, is a testament to the importance of women in the cultural and scientific life of colonial New South Wales. The raw material – the sheet music – was originally gathered by Scottish-born Lucy Havens, who migrated to Australia in 1839. The cover of the CD reproduces one of Australia’s first Christmas cards, depicting flora by Harriet Scott, one of 19th century Australia’s most prominent natural history illustrators. Both music and card are preserved in the collections of Sydney Living Museums.

The compositions include a sonata by Ignace Pleyel, whose works had been performed in concerts in Sydney from as early as 1826, as well as a selection of mostly Scottish songs and dances. The captivating music is performed by Thoroughbass, an ensemble directed by Diana Weston, who plays harpsichord and a recently restored Broadwood square piano from about 1826, and together with composer Ann Carr-Boyd, arranged the music. Other members of the group are soprano Danielle Grant, violinist Tara Hashambhoy and cellists Angus Ryan and Lucy Cormack. - Paul Cooke

Music To Dream To Gemma Sherry

Gemma Sherry Bandcamp

A Musical Missionary Dulcie Holland Independent

Gemma Sherry is not allowing a pandemic to get in the way of her recording career. The Australian-born USA-based vocalist has released three albums in the last twelve months. After headlining at the Los Angelos Brazilian Jazz Festival, she has released a Bossa Nova album with six South American songs to delight her many fans worldwide. Included are Latin favourites such as Joāo Gilberto’s Bim Bom, a song from his first Bossa album recorded in 1959. Also on the album is The Coffee Song, a hit for Frank Sinatra in 1946, and Chove Chuva, a song that Sergio Mendes and Brazil ‘66 featured on their second album Equinox.

This album is pure nostalgia with a Latin twist. Sherry and her band swing the samba-like beat in the style of the music that was first popularised by musicians in Rio de Janeiro, many of whom were influenced by American jazz. In Brazil, the word bossa is old-fashioned slang for something done with a particular charm and natural flair, and that is true of the style of the music delivered here. Paul Bollenback’s guitar work is exemplary when paired with just the vocals of Sherry who has the charm and the talent to do them justice. It may well be the music you need to dream of those hot Brazilian nights in the depths of winter.

Dulcie Holland is well-known by music students and music teachers as the author of countless educational works, theory and musicianship method books. Fewer people recognise her as a major Australian composer who wrote over 300 works, including orchestral, choral, instrumental, chamber and vocal compositions.

add to the already accomplished musical insight into the work. Overall however, this is very fine playing.

The Australian pianist Ronan Apcar is a young devotee who has recently recorded a short selection of Holland’s piano works. Apcar’s playing is secure and confident, particularly in the demands of the Sonata for piano (1952). His technical abilities are not in doubt, and these are mostly balanced by his musical approach to the Sonata. For me, a little more time taken over some of the more reflective lyrical moments would

21

Barry O’Sullivan

Conversation for piano (1954), transcribed by Apcar from the manuscript, and the six short pieces which make up A scattering of leaves (1940-1986), are adeptly portrayed; character and mood are illustrated exquisitely. The recording has a clear, vibrant sound, and has been captured well, with an attractive presence. This recording supports the rediscovery of much of Dulcie Holland’s canon of works; Ronan Apcar has contributed to, and provided, a welcome testament to the lasting legacy that she deserves. - Neil McEwan

LISTENERS LETTERS

Frequency Modulation

Congratulations Fine Music Sydney on the success of the Transmitter Appeal! It’s gratifying to know there are in Sydney people who appreciate what a splendid job you all do, broadcasting into a sea of mediocrity in the over-crowded airwaves. I’ve been an avid listener imageBROKER / Alamy Stock Photo from your very first transmission all those years ago. Once again, Bravo. A question: will you be still broadcasting FM content from your new transmitter? The other Classical station in Sydney has dropped FM from its name, presumably with the intention of dropping its FM content. This I believe was attempted some years ago by the BBC, but FM was saved by an outcry of listeners who insisted that it offered a better signal with a broader dynamic range than DAB. This is certainly the case with my receiver, but unfortunately, weather plays havoc at times with reception, despite having a very good antenna and almost direct line of sight to your Philip Tower transmitter. Once again, congratulations and all my kindest regards to all. - Kenneth Phillips Ed: Fine Music Sydney will continue to broadcast FM content from its new transmitter for a few years yet.

Thanks to Leita Hutchings for her program Jazz Lounge today with an interesting version of St James Infirmary (with some words from Frankie and Johnny) – she always finds some works out of the mainstream. The program adds variety to the day’s programming.

Oh Hosanna

We’ve been listening to Hosanna a lot this year, sitting in a nursing home with an elderly friend who loves his church music. He could always listen to Hosanna and its predecessors in his home, but now he is out of the broadcast area, so we visit and connect our mobile phone to his sound system so he can hear it streaming over the internet. We’ve noticed that all the presenters of the hour are moving away from the English tradition of church music, and these days much of the music we find we don’t know and don’t really enjoy. We’d like to hear more hymns and anthems, and fewer obscure mass settings. Is Hosanna for church music or concert music? Is it about radio choirs or church choirs? I don’t know how all the other listeners of the program use Hosanna as part of their listening week, but I know that for us, it is part of our weekly devotions and we’d really value something that resembles more of the English Church traditions that we remember and participated in when we were young. - Anonymous

Megacle competes in the Olympic Games, disguised as his friend Lycidas. Megacle and Lycidas are in love with Aristea, the daughter of King Clistene, whose hand in marriage is the prize. Disguised as a shepherdess, Princess Argene arrives, determined to win the hand of Lycidas, to whom she was previously betrothed. After winning the games, Megacle confesses the deception to Aristea and leaves, broken-hearted. Lycidas claims Aristea. The tutor Aminta brings news that Megacle has thrown himself into the sea. Aristea then tries to throw herself into the sea in her grief at losing Megacle but is prevented by Argene. Megacle is rescued by a fisherman. Lycidas plots the assassination of the King and is condemned to death for his treason. Argene offers herself in his place, producing a necklace given to her by Lycidas as proof of her royal birth. Clisthene recognises the necklace as one that belonged to his abandoned son. So Lycidas and Aristea are brother and sister. As the match is now unthinkable, Lycidas takes Argene as his bride and Megacle and Aristea marry as well.

Marenka learns that her parents have planned a rich marriage for her, suggested by the marriage broker Kecal, who proposes Vasek, the second son of Tobias Micha, whose first son had left home and is presumed dead. Marenka, having promised to marry the penniless Jenik, refuses to acknowledge the contract. Vasek, shy and stuttering, has been sent to woo Marenka, whom he does not know, so she takes the opportunity to warn him that his prospective bride will lead him a dance, frightening him off. Kecal tries to buy off Jenik, who agrees to accept the money offered and renounce Marenka on condition that no one will marry Marenka except a son of Micha. Unknown to all, Micha’s eldest son is Jenik, who had left home because of his stepmother. Everyone blames him for giving up Marenka for money and Marenka is desolate. She signs the contract to marry Micha’s son. Jenik¹s identity is revealed. As Micha's son, he is, by the terms of the contract, entitled to marry Marenka. When this becomes clear, Marenka understands his actions and embraces him. 22:30 MUSIC OF THE NIGHT Prepared by Paul Cooke
