A Whole New World The unique sound of Beethoven’s Chamber Music Written by Rex Burgess Photo via Alpha Stock / Alamy Stock Photo
In this brief article one can do little more than point towards the vast treasure chest which is Beethoven’s chamber music, a genre in which he began working while still a boy and continued to explore throughout his career, with his last completed works comprising a series of five monumental string quartets. While he’d been composing, mainly for piano, since 1782, the earliest chamber work appearing in any of the three basic catalogues – those with opus numbers, WoO numbers, and the addendums made by Willy Hess in 1957 – dates from 1792. It is WoO 25, a rondo for wind octet, thought to have been the original finale for the Octet in E flat, opus 103 which, despite its high number, actually dates from 1792. It took another three years, however, before Beethoven felt sufficiently satisfied with his works to publish and affix an official opus number to them, beginning with the three Piano Trios which comprise his opus 1. It seems Beethoven had an enduring affection for these trios, returning to the third, in C minor, in 1817 and rescoring it for string quintet, his opus 104. A littleknown and thoroughly enjoyable work, it features prominently in Vikram Seth’s 1999 novel, An Equal Music. Fast forward to 1801 when, already aged 30, and having completed nine other opuses devoted to chamber works, Beethoven finally released the first of his 16 string quartets. A group of six, his opus 18, they were commissioned by Count Apponyi and composed between 1798 and 1800. Having already explored the Lied, the piano sonata and the piano trio, and being well aware of the pioneering models of Haydn and Mozart with which they doubtless would be compared, with these quartets Beethoven created a new and sonorous world of incontestable originality.
Which brings us to those last great quartets starting with opus 127, and the companion Grosse Fuge in B flat, opus 133. Cast in a single gigantic movement loaded with musical ideas, this monumental work, long considered, as Marion Scott records, ‘unpayable, grotesque, uncouth and cacophonous’, is now recognised as a masterpiece of the highest order.
Although he wrote various chamber works in other forms in the following years, including the ever-popular Spring violin sonata, his opus 24, it was not until 1808 that Beethoven published any more quartets. However, this form then began to dominate his chamber works, beginning with the opus 59 set-of-three. Commissioned by the Russian ambassador to Vienna, Count Andre Razumovsky, each quartet has at least one Russian folk melody woven into it.
As are the quartets, themselves. Written mainly from 1824 onwards, when Beethoven was almost completely deaf, they were also poorly received on first appearance. It was left to posterity to recognise them as amongst the greatest musical compositions of all time, and a source of inspiration to many later composers.
By 1811 two more quartets, opus 74 and 95, had been composed, and Beethoven had also revisited the combination of piano, violin and cello with two trios, opus 70, and arguably the finest work in this genre, the so-called Archduke trio, his opus 97.
A celebration of Beethoven’s chamber music, as part of the Beethoven 250 Festival, culminates in two Chamber Soiree programs at 10pm on Tuesday 8 and 15 December.

He must dwell Beyond the Stars Brett Weymark in conversation on Beethoven Written by Nicky Gluch Photo by Keith Saunders
On 17 December, Fine Music Sydney’s Beethoven 250 Festival will culminate in the broadcast of Beethoven’s choral Symphony no 9. Earlier in the day, however, a piece will be broadcast which was similarly ground-breaking though far lesser known. It is a piece which Brett Weymark made his own long before he would conduct the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs (an ensemble with which he has become synonymous) and it is in hearing about it that one gains an understanding of the relationship between Weymark, the musician, and Beethoven, the composer. An die ferne Geliebte, To the distant beloved, is a song-cycle composed by Beethoven in 1816. It is a standout work in what was a lean musical period; between ill-health and the struggle to obtain guardianship of his nephew, Karl, Beethoven’s attention was clearly divided. His ingenuity, however, was not. An die ferne Geliebte may have inspired the song-cycles of Schubert and Schumann but, conceptually, it is quite different. Where the songs of Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise can simultaneously stand alone and form part of a narrative, An die ferne Geliebte is entirely through-composed. The six parts form a cycle in the literal sense, the theme from the first song reappearing as the conclusion of the last. As Weymark describes, this is something unique to Beethoven: ‘Britten doesn’t even do it; Mahler doesn’t…’. Growing up as a vocalist, the cycle was one of the earlier Beethoven pieces to which Weymark was exposed, and yet the years have not dimmed the sense of discovery. Indeed, as Weymark explains, what is peculiar to Beethoven is that you can ‘get a piece in front of you and still find new insights 20 years down the line’. The more you look, the more there is to find. Weymark is one of Sydney’s most successful musicians. Having studied voice at the University of Sydney and conducting at the NSW Conservatorium of Music, he was appointed Music Director of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs in 2003, succeeding his former teacher Mats Nilsson. In the Choirs’ 100 year history, only one conductor, Vivian Peterson, has served a longer term. It was during Peterson’s tenure that the Philharmonia (then the Hurlstone Park Choral Society) first sang with the SSO, becoming their partner ensemble five years later in 1941. Weymark helped bring the Choirs into the 21st century. Under his direction, and the baton of Elizabeth Scott, the VOX ensemble for young adults has become a presence on the contemporary music scene. In 2007, Weymark formed the Festival Chorus, a biannual gathering of passionate singers who get to experience the thrill of performing choral masterworks en masse. It is this sense of community that COVID-19 has most disrupted. Weymark was conducting a general rehearsal of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis when the 500 patron rule for theatres was announced. No one guessed that they would shut completely within weeks.
06
Weymark has ensured that the Choirs have sung on, taking advantage of Zoom to keep rehearsals going, boosting morale and providing the choristers with a sense of contact. He is acutely aware, however, that it is not the same as singing in person. Indeed, the inability for people to gather has furthered Weymark’s understanding that it is shared presence which makes a choir a choir. ‘The pandemic,’ he says, ‘has hit at the core of what choirs are about.’ Not just music making, but togetherness. Which brings us back to Beethoven. Though his vocal works are often maligned for being too “instrumental” in their writing, Weymark sees them as critical to understanding Beethoven’s philosophy. The Missa Solemnis and the Symphony no 9 serve as a yin and yang, the former religious but highly human, the latter secular but highly Christian. Both broke new ground; the mass in almost defining its own genre, and the symphony by incorporating a choir. They are prototypes, and thus to Weymark anything unwieldly is not surprising for they explore sound in unprecedented ways. As musicologist Donald Tovey wrote: “There is no choral and no orchestral writing, earlier or later, that shows a more thrilling sense of the individual colour of every chord, every position, and every doubled third or discord.” What Beethoven sought, be it in his mass or the Ode to Joy, was a true unity, one found not in sameness but in difference. He interrupts his own music making to proclaim: Oh friends, not these sounds! Let us instead strike up more pleasing and more joyful ones! Now who would do that, but Beethoven? “

The Patriot The Life and Times of Vítězslav Novák Written by Dan Bickel and James Nightingale Photo via Profimedia.CZ a.s. / Alamy Stock Photo
December marks the sesquicentenary of the birth of Czech composer Vítězslav Novák (1870-1949). Novák’s music has a place within the late-Romantic school of Czech composition, sitting beside such notable composers as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček. However, his interest in modern musical trends, stimulated by the Prague premiere of Richard Strauss’ Salome, lends his music a modernist edge that makes it distinctive from his compatriots. Novák grew up in a southern Bohemian village where his musical talent was encouraged by a sympathetic music teacher. In his late teens, he attended Dvořák’s composition classes at the Prague Conservatory and became a good friend of Dvořák’s son-in-law, the violinist and composer, Josef Suk. Novák’s early music was inspired by the rich folk music of neighbouring rural Moravia and Slovakia. In 1896, he travelled to Moravia (now part of the Slovak Republic) and the Tatra mountains, where he was captivated by the landscape, the people and their music. This fascination led to the composition of the Slovak Suite a n d In the Tatras, works full of folk song. Another work from this part of his career is Toman and the Wood Nymph, which is based on a poetic rendering of the Czech legend by František Ladislav Čelakovský. The woodsman Toman, betrayed by his lover, goes off into the forest and dies of grief in the arms of a wood nymph. The pictorial and impressionistic score, full of musical colour and some adventurous harmony, surprised Prague audiences at its premiere in 1908. From 1901-17, Novák held meetings in his home of a group of like-minded musicians including Suk and Rudolf Karel. These friends, along with Novák’s wife, Marie Prášková, debated new music from abroad, shared their own scores and helped each other along in their careers. After the Great War, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed leading to the foundation of Czechoslovakia. Novák was a prominent agitator for Czech and Slovak culture, using folk song to raise the profile of a new national culture. Having taught composition at the Prague Conservatory from 1909-20, the formation of Czechoslovakia inspired Novák to take an administrative turn, and he took on the post of director of the Conservatory. However, he was embroiled in heated public controversy over Dvořák’s music with a music critic

from Prague University, which led to a campaign against his own music by sections of the Prague press. This prompted Novák to compose in a more conservative style but even so, audiences and critics were not receptive to his several operas and ballets of the 1920s and 30s. With the annexation of Czechoslovakia and invasion by German forces in 1938-9, Novák’s career took another turn. He resigned from the Prague Conservatory and dedicated himself to composition. Works from this time included the St Wenceslas Tryptich and De Profundis, pieces which embodied resistance to German rule. These were followed in 1945 by the May Symphony, dedicated to Stalin, the liberator of Czechoslovakia. Novák died in 1949, his post war years having been dedicated to choral arrangements of folk songs. This was a return to the inspirations of his early career, the Moravian and Slovak folk songs that were his ever present muse.

Heroes & Heroines Beethoven’s Incidental Music
Written by Paul Cooke Image via Art Heritage / Alamy Stock Photo
Between 1807 and 1822 Beethoven composed incidental music for a number of theatrical productions. He was drawn to protagonists who dared to take action against repressive forces and displayed heroic behaviour. The music he wrote similarly finds him straining against the Classical forms of Haydn and Mozart, as he attempts to establish mood, setting and character and convey the extramusical ideas that were so important to his Romantic successors. It has been suggested that the sonata form overtures, of which Beethoven was such a master, are more satisfying than the more disparate and subservient – the more incidental – pieces could hope to be.
Image via Art Heritage / Alamy Stock Photos
The Overture to Coriolan was written in 1807 to accompany the revival of Viennese dramatist Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s 1804 drama: Coriolan is a patrician banished from Rome who is determined to exact revenge upon his former city. The overture’s first theme, rhythmic and agitated, represents his brutality and resolve, but it is gradually overtaken by a lyrical second theme which depicts the pleas of his mother and wife to desist.
Apart from some incidental music for Johann Friedrich Leopold Duncker’s play about Leonore Prohaska (another heroic woman, who fought against Napoleon disguised as a man), which appears not to have been performed at the time, Beethoven’s remaining commissions tended to be for music for theatre openings. In 1812, a new theatre was opened in Pest and Beethoven provided music for two plays by Kotzebue, both flattering the Emperor Franz. One was about King Stephan I, canonised for bringing Christianity to Hungary in the 11th century. The other, The Ruins of Athens, has Athens occupied by Turks and the Parthenon destroyed; Greek culture and reason, however, are preserved in Pest thanks to the Emperor. Finally, in 1822, Beethoven was commissioned to write music for the reopening of the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. Having immersed himself in Baroque music while writing his Missa Solemnis, he paid homage to Handel in The Consecration of the House by incorporating a double fugue. The overture was a popular success, and its performance became obligatory at the openings of new concert halls and opera houses in Germany.
Beethoven’s next commission came in 1810, with the opportunity to provide incidental music for a new production of Egmont by the highly regarded German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Beethoven eagerly accepted the commission. He was attracted by the subject matter, the struggle for freedom embodied in the martyrdom of a hero and the devotion of the woman who loves him, themes he had dealt with in his opera Fidelio and the Overture to Coriolan. Here, Count Egmont pleads for tolerance from the Spanish king towards Protestants in Flanders who are being persecuted. Beethoven was familiar with the work of Goethe and had first set his poetry to music 20 years earlier; in August 1810 he wrote that he composed the music for Egmont “purely out of love for the poet”. By the conclusion of the play, freedom is assured, reflected in exhilarating, celebratory music in a major key; along the way, we have been treated to a couple of songs sung by a soprano and an unusual amount of slow music, indicative of the sustaining love of Clara for Egmont.

her defence. A cannon shot is heard, and Erisso and Calbo rush off to battle. Anna goes to the church to pray where she learns from other women that a traitor has been allowed into the city by the Turks. Erisso and Calbo are captured. Maometto tells them that if all of his army surrender, all will be released. Erisso rejects the offer and, as the two are about to be led away to be tortured, Anna and the women appear from the church. Anna recognises Maometto as the man who was her lover ‘Uberto’; Maometto is dumbfounded to see Anna; and Erisso cannot believe that she could have fallen for the Sultan. Anna threatens to kill herself unless Maometto releases Erisso and Calbo. He agrees and promises her a life of luxury saying that he loves her and wishes her to reign with him as queen. He will allow her father and Calbo to live. Rejecting him, she declares that her love for her country is so strong that she could never love him as much. As Maometto prepares to continue the attack, he tells Anna that he still has a hope of possessing her and he will protect her father. She insists on something to guarantee her safety in his absence and, as a symbol of his promise and his protection, he gives her his imperial seal of authority. Erisso and Calbo are hiding in the church vault. Erisso spurns his daughter for consorting with the enemy but she swears that she will never marry Maometto. As proof, she gives him Maometto's seal, which will enable both men to come out of hiding. The two men depart for the combat against Maometto. Venetian soldiers rush in proclaiming their victory and they are followed by Erisso and Calbo. Erisso embraces his daughter and she agrees to marry Calbo. Maometto and his captains enter and confront Anna. Maometto asks for his seal to be returned, but telling him that she gave it to her father and that she has married Calbo, she stabs herself and dies on her mother's tomb. wife Fatime to the Caliph's wife, Zobeïde, to announce his (Hassan's) death, for which Fatime will receive 50 pieces of gold and a piece of brocade. When creditors come to collect money, Abu Hassan tricks the richest creditor, Omar, into believing that Fatime has spoken to him of her love for Omar, so he agrees to pay all of the other creditors. Fatime returns with the presents from Zobeïde. Abu Hassan visits the Caliph, intending to try a similar story about his wife to get money from him. While he is away, Omar reappears and demands a kiss from Fatime but, when Abu Hassan returns, Omar hides in an adjoining room and the husband and wife enjoy his discomfort. Both the Caliph and his wife want to know who it was who died and, if both, who died first. Mesrur, a messenger from the Caliph, arrives first and, seeing Fatime lying on the
1770-2020
divan, her husband in apparent distress at her side, he runs back to tell the Caliph. Then Zobeïde 's nurse runs in on a similar errand. This time it is Hassan who feigns death, while Fatime is all tears and lamenting. Finally, the Caliph and his wife are announced. Hassan and Fatime throw themselves on the divan, covering themselves, as if dead. The Caliph now offers 1,000 gold pieces to anyone who will tell him which of them died first. Hassan revives and throws himself at the Caliph's feet, saying ‘It was me. I died first!’ He asks for a pardon, as well as the gold. Fatime does likewise, and the amused Caliph pardons them both. Omar, having paid off Hassan's debts in the hope of winning Fatime's heart, goes away in despair. Mozart, W. Paul’s young wife, Marie, has recently died and he cannot come to terms with her death. He keeps a ‘Temple of Memories’ in her honour among which is a braid of her hair. Paul reveals to his friend, Frank, that he has met a beautiful young dancer called Marietta whom he believes is Marie and he has invited her back to his home. Although she thinks him strange, she sings and dances for him but finally gets bored and leaves. Paul becomes extremely anxious and begins hallucinating, seeing Marie stepping out of her portrait. After a series of visions in which his pursuit of Marietta alienates him from all of his remaining friends, Marietta finally overcomes Paul's resistance and leads him offstage locked in a passionate embrace (although this is just in Paul’s mind). He quarrels with Marietta who gets fed up with his behaviour and leaves. Hallucinating, he imagines that she is taunting him by dancing while stroking the braid of his dead wife's hair. In a rage, Paul grabs the braid of hair and, in his fantasy, strangles Marietta. Holding her dead body he exclaims: "Now she is exactly like Marie”. Then he snaps out of his dream. Marietta and his friends return to Paul’s house and Frank convinces him that his desire is dead, so Paul prepares to leave the city. 22:30 RUSSIAN CHAMBER Prepared by Di Cox Arensky, A. Sophia rejects Blifil’s proposal. Tom knocks Blifil down in a fight. Efforts are made to blacken Tom’s character. Western angrily rejects Tom's request for Sophia's hand. Sophia, accompanied by her maid, runs away. Blifil and Squire Western in pursuit of Sophia arrive at an inn where they meet Benjamin Partridge who knows about Tom's birth. Sophia and her maid arrive but they and their pursuers remain unaware of each other's presence. Next to arrive is Tom, with Sophia’s cousin, Lady Bellaston, whom he has rescued from highwaymen. She is very grateful to her rescuer leading Sophia to think that Tom is unfaithful. She leaves with Tom in pursuit. Eventually Tom finds Sophia living with Lady Bellaston in London. Sophia now realises that she was mistaken in doubting his fidelity. Partridge has told Squire Western the secret of Tom's birth: he is Allworthy's elder nephew and therefore his heir. Western now gladly consents to Tom and Sophia's marriage.

Australian Women In Jazz Celebrating female jazz pioneers of the past 100 years Written by Barry O’Sullivan Photos by: Arwyn Bryant / Cat McKenzie for Occhio Photography
Australia’s first jazz band was formed in Sydney in 1918 fronted by vocalist Belle Sylvia who had recently arrived in the country from England to perform a season at Harry Ricard’s vaudeville house The Tivoli Theatre. Historically, women performers in jazz have been mostly singers. Past audiences of the genre expected the leading orchestras to showcase a ‘girl singer’. Women were rarely allowed to serve in other capacities, either on the bandstand or writing arrangements and compositions. Looking broadly at the music industry, it is widely seen as lagging behind even Hollywood on gender equality. However, in the jazz genre, power is not as centralised in the hands of corporations, which in turn employ pop producers and control entire creative supply chains. Rather, in the improvised-music business, the most important single entity is the musicians themselves. Beyond that, it is Festivals and education. The direction of history dictated that women would perform music, not make or create music. They were an object to entertain and it was something of a requirement that women in colonial times and well into the 19th century play a keyboard or other home instrument for entertaining visitors and the family at home. Later, women made a strong showing in music education to such a degree that women dominated music education well into the 20th century. In general, these were the roles of women in music, whether it was classical or popular music.

At Foundry 616 Jazz Club in Ultimo, talented guitarist Hilary Geddes led a contemporary music ensemble. Sydney’s new generation ignited the Foundry stage in a special Festival double bill with drummer, Jodie Michael, a graduate in the Global Jazz Master’s program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In a special treat for online audiences, 2019 festival favourite, Brazilian boss a-nova vocalist, Anna Setton, performed a live-streamed show from Sao Paulo. The staging of this hugely successful event meant that a lot of inroads have been made and that there is further to celebrate. But as it always happens, when you take a moment to celebrate achievements, to see how far achievements have gone, it is also time to see how much further these achievements can go.
However, for the past nine years, Sydney City has come alive in jazz clubs and performing venues with the sound of more than thirty leading female musicians celebrating improvised music from Australia and the world in The Sydney International Jazz Festival. Leading the Festival into its season with a special double bill showcasing her ten-piece big band Caribe, alongside her sextet ALLY, was the saxophonist and composer, Gai Bryant. Touted as Sydney’s “Queen of Latin Jazz”, the bandleader integrated traditional dance and song with a modern jazz aesthetic.
Understandably, there is still a long way to go. However, it does seem those female musicians do have some grand participating future in the creation and future history of jazz music.
The award-winning vocalist Emma Pask showcased her expert versatility in a performance at Mary’s Underground. She sang through jazz standards, rode Latin rhythms, or poured her heart out in tender ballads to the delight of her audience.
Friday 4 December at 12pm
Mary’s Underground, formerly known as The Basement, was the festival’s hub and offered only sixty tickets a show, with two shows scheduled for each night’s performance. Over the following nights, ARIA award-winning singersongwriter Elana Stone took to the stage combining her unique and quirky style with instrumental inventions, as well as Monica Trapaga, the former bandleader of Monica and the Moochers, featured with a high-energy classic piano trio evoking feel-good jazz with tight arrangements. Mary’s Underground also showcased Pharos a ten-member powerhouse big band led by bassist Hannah James. That band featured a six-piece horn section, merging the best of the big bands with the flexibility, creativity, and genrebending exploration expected in any modern ensemble. In a world premiere, Pharos performed a new work commissioned especially for the Festival composed and arranged by Sandy Evans OAM - the 2020 Festival’s Artist in Residence. “This year’s Festival presented a unique opportunity for music lovers to experience the magic and intimacy of jazz,” said Zoe Hauptmann and Peter Rechniewski, the Festival’s co-artistic directors. Pianist, Zela Margossian, delivered a blend of classical and multi-cultural music to audiences as they immersed themselves intimately with the performers in a focused, concert-style environment at Old Theatre 505 in a soldout event. Also at The Old 505 Theatre Venue, Jenny Eriksson’s FIKA ensemble showcased northern European jazz and Swedish baroque music through the prism of the idiosyncratic seven-stringed viola de gamba.

Why Christmas Jazz Is Cool Part 4 in the Why Jazz Is Cool series Written by Leita Hutchings Illustration by Leita Hutchings
Look at it this way—we all LOVE Christmas, because we want to share wonderful things with those we really hold close to our hearts. Those people you see driving themselves crazy with Christmas shopping aren’t doing it because they want to ease the national debt; it’s a symbol of the dedicated sharing, giving, pleasure and happiness for another, embodied by Christmas day. And always, where there’s good will, sharing and pleasure, there’s always great music. Christmas is crooners; it’s known, it’s a fact, it’s tradition. When I ponder a typical, perfect Christmas album it HAS to have Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole. It’s no surprise, some really iconic jazz tacks were used in the Home Alone film; Mel Torme’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, is just the essence of cool. What about Nat King Cole’s version of The Christmas Song? It’s delicious! Although the Michael Buble version is perfect with a bit of a modern edge. And then there’s Gregory Porter’s version too—you HAVE to listen to Gregory Porter’s version! For something totally lush, listen to Diana Krall’s Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas; it’s a very cool version, with an emphasis on how thoughtfully she treats the lyrics. Stacey Kent has a beautiful version too, and children really LOVE the Vince Guaraldi Trio album, A Charlie Brown Christmas. The bottom line is, with every conceivable nuance and version of Christmas; there’s every way to decorate it, with love and music. It doesn’t matter how you celebrate; traditional, Scandi, modern cool, black, artificial, real or a mere assemblage of twigs. So here’s some of my favourites, for your Christmas playlist: Dean Martin – Let It Snow Dean Martin and Scarlett Johansson … yes the Scarlett Johansson – “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”; a graceful duet. Louis Armstrong – “White Christmas”, totally elegant, totally hip. Ella Fitzgerald – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Billy Eckstine – Christmas Eve Kurt Elling – The Christmas Song, divine! Harry Connick Jnr and Elvis Presley – Blue Christmas (I know Elvis’s version isn’t strictly jazz, but you’ve got to have it on your playlist) Harry Connick Jnr – Silver Bells Till Bronner – Winter Wonderland, or Santa Clause Is Coming To Town” Stacey Kent – Christmas Song Kenny Burrell – Merry Christmas Baby. This is so cool. Eartha Kitt or Chantall Chamberland – Santa Baby Have you listened to the Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s duet of Little Drummer Boy? If you wanted to buy just one album, it’d have to be Pat Boone’s Old Fashioned Christmas, just for the tradition. But play an album named Jazz Me On Sunday Christmas Episode 10 if you like something hip, and when the children have gone to bed, listen to Diana Krall’s Christmas Songs album; it’s lovely, delicious, and silky—just for the two of you. Because a day spent with the incredible creatures in your life; so close to your heart and soul, leaves you with an exhaustion and contentment that traverses time and age … have a wonderful Christmas. Volunteer Spotlight Anne-Louise Luccarini Written by Pamela Newling Photo supplied by Fine Music Illustration by Lyndon Pike
Lifelong involvement with classical music, both as a pianist and trained singer, might have given Anne-Louise Luccarini a head-start when she began presenter training in October 2019. But she comments with a laugh that it felt like diving into the deep end when her first program went to air in mid-December as a prerecord, with a whole new set of procedures to learn on the spot! The attraction of Fine Music for Anne-Louise is the quality of programming and presentation, and the pleasure of being part of a community of like-minded people, something that has, of course, suffered from the impact of Covid restrictions. Anne-Louise has relished the privilege of singing in performances under the baton of great conductors. Asked about any particularly magical moments, she didn’t hesitate. “Walking into the vast Maida Vale studios of the BBC,” she recalls, “for the first orchestral rehearsal of the Verdi Requiem. Everyone was still arriving, and Antal Dorati, in pea-soup-coloured rehearsal shirt, was alone, rehearsing the split trumpets in the Dies Irae fanfare. That all-enveloping sound! I wept with emotion.” Another recollection: “The last rehearsal of the Beethoven 9th with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under Willem van Otterloo. He was insistent about one small detail in the closing phrases, saying everybody gets it wrong but we were going to do what Beethoven wrote. ‘We’ll never know why he wrote it that way,’ he said. Two days later he died in an accident. We performed it as he had wished, under the concertmaster. I couldn’t help but think that now he could ask Beethoven himself.”
Asked about her singing, Anne-Louise says: “I stopped singing when I had a repetiteur renting my spare room. He worked with the best voices in Australia! At one of his parties he put the last scene of Don Giovanni on the piano and cast everyone against type, kindly giving me the Commendatore. They never knew I wasn’t really a bassbaritone.” Is there any music Anne-Louise doesn’t like? “There’s music that I find difficult, but it opens up like an oyster, if you’re willing to persevere. I enjoy the research involved in preparing a presentation; in fact my biggest challenge (apart from little trifles like forgetting the microphone switch!) has been to resist the temptation to share with the listeners all the fascinating facts I’ve unearthed and stay brief, to the point and, hopefully, interesting.” There’s so much to learn about Anne-Louise Luccarini. When asked what she did before she joined Fine Music, her response was “Earned my living. Raised two children. Worked for SBS. Lived in Europe.” That’s pretty brief! But she also says: “I was deeply involved in all aspects of theatre, until my second youth began and I moved to Europe. If you’re in theatre you don’t do anything else, and as I’m still writing my book, I steer clear of theatre. And with Fine Music Sydney, who could ask for more?”

Paul Cutlan String Project Earshift Music EAR043
With neither the large number of published works nor the modern profile of Vivaldi, Handel and Bach, Arcangelo Corelli is nonetheless a crucial figure in the evolution of classical music. Only six collections of his work were published: the sixth, revised and polished by the composer and published posthumously, was devoted to concerti grossi. Its significance rests with the way he set a small concertino group against a larger ensemble, subtly varying form, dynamics, harmony and instrumental combinations. The music is performed by Genesis Baroque in what is both their first studio recording and the first complete recording of Corelli’s Opus 6 by
an Australian ensemble. The concertino group comprises violinists Sophie Gent (whose experience includes playing and teaching in The Netherlands and France) and Lucinda Moon (the director of Genesis Baroque), together with cellist Natasha Kraemer. This is a well-annotated release that will reward close listening.
Elysian Fields is an ensemble formed to create new music for the electric viola da gamba. Its founding members were The Marais Ensemble’s Jenny Eriksson and two jazz musicians, saxophonist Matt Keegan and pianist Matt McMahon. Fika is a Swedish concept which emphasises the importance of community, evidenced in two of the compositions which feature the affecting voice of Susie Bishop: Sofia Karlsson’s Frid på Lord is frequently heard in Sweden at Christmas, and the folksong Vi ska ställa till en roliger dans has its origins as a dance considered suitable for boys and girls making their
first acquaintance. Låt till Far, previously arranged for a baroque trio by The Marais Project, is here performed by violin, viola da gamba and piano. Matt Keegan’s Cold Soul, inspired by the Scandinavian landscape, displays qualities which resonate throughout the album: majestic but nevertheless meditative, it seems to provide consolation for hard times.
This second release from The Paul Cutlan String Project follows a narrative that traverses human life and all its myriad experiences. Cutlan composed some of and arranged all of the repertoires in the five years since the launch of his first album Across the Top, developing them gradually and employing a more improvised approach. Enlarged with strings, and anchored by his woodwinds, these pieces are artistically embellished by all the musicians' creative contributions. Their musical interpretations are both colourful and melodic. Coltrane’s After the Rain receives a sumptuous treatment of tremolo strings and harmonics
realising the shimmering piano chords of the original, with Oliver Miller’s cello tenderly intoning the melody in the interludes. Each new composition and reinterpretation on the album add a new perspective to the artistic possibilities available in jazz thereby enlarging its universe with an ultra-modern purview on this recently issued gem.
