As the music world slowly recovers from the devastating impact that Covid-19 has had on the industry, it’s worth noting that despite the enforced closure of major live classical concert venues in 2020, our musicians, organisations and orchestras have responded to the challenge in numerous creative and diverse ways despite shaky support from the Government. We talked to Sarah-Grace Williams, chief conductor of The Metropolitan Orchestra, which was forced to close its doors last year in early March, and asked her how they had coped when faced with the prospect of cancelling their entire season. Read about their chamber concert, streaming solutions and plans for 2021 on page 6. Over the years, the jazz component in Fine Music Sydney‘s broadcast output has steadily increased, particularly with the introduction of our digital stream and more recently with the advent of new digital platforms. We present jazz right across the genre spectrum from 1900 classics, through 60s cool to modern and emerging musicians. To reflect this we will be devoting more space in the Magazine to articles on the subject of jazz, as well as increasing the number of jazz CDs reviewed. his music deemed too formalist, in 1948 he was denounced for a second time. Before this, however, after Stalin’s death in 1953, Mravinsky premiered another five of his symphonies as well as his first violin and cello concerti, but when Shostakovich chose the Babi Yar massacre as the subject of his Symphony No. 13, Mravinsky felt pressured to decline. To denounce antisemitism was to criticise the State, and Mravinsky, best placed and yet not entitled to make a political statement, chose to protect his career over taking a moral stand. To Shostakovich, this was betrayal and the two men cut ties.
Yevgeny Mravinsky was a Soviet conductor. By this I mean not simply that he was a citizen of the Union, but that his life and career were intricately linked with its history. Born in 1903 into an aristocratic family, Mravinsky was a teenager during the Russian Revolution. In 1918, his father died, and he and his mother found themselves at the mercy of the State, which did not look kindly upon those of the upper class. Had the State had its way, he would have been barred from the Leningrad Conservatory but his half-aunt, Alexandra Kollontai, a Bolshevik politician, intervened. She wrote directly to Alexander Glazunov, requesting that Mravinsky be taken on as a composition student.
Was Mravinsky, then, merely a Soviet pawn? He might have been, had his allegiance not also been to music. With the power of his position and an orchestra truly at his command, he tirelessly sought musical perfection. Everything was honed, with rigid back and stern posture, a tyrant, thus, in appearance. Yet in his hands lay the music, tangible, as if a string was at the end of his baton. Through his simple, though somewhat inelegant, technique he became a master of Russian music, but his privilege was also to be trusted to correctly represent ‘European’ music. The audience would recognise the music’s ‘inherent’ Soviet values, because it followed through his body. He thus became a trusted interpreter of Brahms, whose Symphony No. 4 was permitted for its dramatic power which united tragedy and passion.
It was with the baton, however, and not the pen, that Mravinsky was to make his name. In 1938, he was appointed principal conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. The following year, the Soviet Union signed the MolotovRibbentrop pact and set further in motion the events which would lead to World War II. By the end of the war, the Soviets and the West would be opposed; classical music now lay on two sides of the Iron Curtain. Mravinsky’s life became a game of chess: professional security lay with remaining at the helm of the Leningrad Philharmonic, but to do so meant staying on the right side of Stalin. He had managed it once before, taking the daring risk (he blamed youth) to premiere Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The triumph of that performance had secured Shostakovich’s pardon and Mravinsky’s career but repeat success was never guaranteed. Indeed, Shostakovich continued to walk a fine line;
It was one of the last works Mravinsky was to conduct. He gave his final concert on 6 March 1987 and died the following January after 50 years as the Leningrad Philharmonic’s chief conductor. Twenty-two months later, the Berlin Wall would fall. Sunday Specials starting Sunday 21 February at 3pm

In Conversation with The Metropolitan Orchestra Mona Omar talks to TMO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Sarah-Grace Williams about performing in 2021 and beyond
The Metropolitan Orchestra returned to the stage in October after a 10-month hiatus. How challenging has it been organising concerts in the pandemic era? The hiatus from March to November without a concert is the longest The Metropolitan Orchestra has gone without a performance since we began back in 2009. We were lucky in that we were able to at least perform one Met Concert on 7 March before everything was locked down only days later. After that, we had to cancel everything for the year, which was terribly disappointing for all of us, particularly considering the enormous amount of work it takes to put a complete season together. It was very difficult to prepare for our return to the stage with the continued restrictions and uncertainty around Covid. After much planning, it was decided that the best way to return to live performance would be with a smaller chamber concert which gave us more flexibility to consider and adapt to the erratic changes caused by Covid and the ensuing effects these had on audience numbers. It was also a great opportunity to understand how we need to manage the many regulations and requirements so that we could deliver a Covid-safe event (which are many and quite complicated). It was a steep learning curve, but in the end we delivered a really engaging, intimate, safe and very successful performance. This concert also marked the orchestra’s first digital live stream of a concert performance. Was this introduction a result of the restricted audience numbers? Will it remain a part of your 2021 concert season offering? The idea to live stream our performances was a direct result of the significantly reduced audience numbers. It meant that we could only host less than a quarter of the regular audience numbers than we would normally be allowed. Streaming allows us to reach a wider audience and deliver live performance to those who may find it difficult to attend our events. This fits perfectly with our mission to make great music more accessible to more people. Live
streaming requires a significant amount of technical awareness and infrastructure, but we are hoping to continue live streaming in 2021, although it may not happen for all performances. We will have to make decisions regarding streaming on a concert-byconcert basis. The other exciting benefit of streaming is that each concert is available for anyone to watch after the event, in its live stream format, free from our video gallery here . A mission of the orchestra is to support Australian artists – orchestral players, composers, conductors and soloists. Is there anything you can tell us about your planned partnerships and development programs for musicians? One of our primary charters is to support and develop Australian musicians. We believe there are simply not enough prime opportunities for our many talented artists to showcase their wares in a professional live performance environment. Whether it is composers, soloists or young musicians with loads of passion and dedication, we are committed to giving them as many opportunities as possible. We have a range of initiatives to develop and support our significant depth of supremely talented Australian artists this year. Many of these were scheduled for 2020, so we are excited to be bringing these to fruition in 2021, depending on what happens with Covid of course. In addition to featuring Australian soloists and Australian composers, including six world/Australian premieres and a composer in residence programme in 2021, we also have several planned specific development programs (we will be making announcements on these over coming months), including an artist in residence program and a winter string music camp. We are also hoping to re-launch our very successful composer development program later in the year, which will continue into 2022.

What do you have planned for the 2021 concert season? Our 2021 program will be a little different from previous years. What we have learnt from the challenges of Covid, is that we need to be flexible and ready to change and adapt to new rules and regulations as they are applied. Planning and organising orchestral concerts takes a great deal of work and pre-planning, much of which is very difficult to modify once the wheels are in motion. Our 2021 program will be more flexible, allowing scope to handle potentially reduced audience numbers without having to incur potentially huge financial losses. We are planning five Met Concerts, four chamber concerts and four kids Cushion Concert weekends (all cushion concerts were postponed in 2020). Pending further relaxation of current Covid rules, these performances will go ahead, fingers crossed. We know that the many new challenges that Arts organisations have to face as a result of Covid will continue through this year. Now more than ever, people need access to great live music. We will do all we can to continue delivering on these needs.

Music for the People Paul Cooke explores the life and legacy of Michael Praetorius
The death of Duke Heinrich Julius in 1613 saw Praetorius seconded to the court of Elector Johann Georg of Saxony at Dresden, where he was exposed to recent innovations in Italian music. His Polyhymnia caduceatrix of 1619 shows the influence of Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi in its increased ornamentation and denser scoring, representing “the fusion of the German chorale with the combined Venetian polychoral and Palestinian melodic styles”.
“Music is a precious gift of God. When I hear music, joy bubbles up inside of me. Anyone who does not respond to this gift is a clod and not fit to be called a man.” Coarse though he may have been of tongue, Martin Luther very much lived up to his words. An accomplished musician, he had sung Gregorian chant in his school choir and performed secular songs with his friends, and both became incorporated into Lutheran worship. Luther himself composed 36 hymns based on German texts and his musical adviser, Johann Walter, composed the first collection of chorales for the Lutheran church.
Praetorius desired to make publicly available the music he had created or compiled. He concentrated mostly on church music and published no secular works other than Terpsichore, a collection of more than 300 French dance melodies which is, ironically, perhaps the music most closely associated with him these days. Praetorius also published three volumes of his writings, Syntagma musicum, where he discussed contemporary German music, musical instruments and performance. It has enabled instrument makers to make precise reconstructions and has been of much value in determining how music of the 17th century was played.
Over the next 200 years a succession of Lutheran composers – the most notable of whom were Praetorius, Schütz, Buxtehude and Bach – produced intricate works which proclaimed the gospel. These were written and required performance, but at the same time encouraged the participation of the congregation. This was crucial, as Luther’s reforms included making the communion service comprehensible and participatory, an offering from the congregation rather than from a priest on its behalf. Michael Praetorius, whose father had been a pupil of Luther and a colleague of Walter, was born in about 1571. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder, experimenting, in his own words, “with various forms of art before settling for music at a later stage”. During his schooldays in Creuzberg, he’d had lessons with Michael Voigt; in Frankfurt he shared an interest in Protestant hymns with Bartholomäus Gesius and, in 1587, was appointed organist of St Marien, where he remained for three years.
By the time Praetorius finally returned to Wolfenbüttel he was in ill health, possibly because of overwork, and he was soon relieved of his services. He died 400 years ago, on 15 February 1621, and is buried in the city’s Marienkirche, in a vault beneath the organ. Friday 19 February, 8pm
Praetorius reappears in the annals of 1595, when he was appointed organist for Duke Heinrich Julius of Wolfenbüttel. In 1604, he was promoted to court Kapellmeister, an appointment that ushered in a very busy period for him: not only did it necessitate much travel throughout Germany – allowing him to establish himself as a talented conductor, organist and musicologist – but it also led to the publication of his Musae Sioniae (1605-12), a nine-volume collection of more than 1200 chorale and song settings.

importantly, in persuading composers to record in their works the sights and sounds of their beautiful country.
From 12 February onwards, the second and fourth Friday afternoons will feature music from Bohemia, which is now the western province of the Czech Republic. Once it was a kingdom in its own right, with Prague as its capital, and one of its kings will be forever remembered as Good King Wenceslas.
In our series of programs, you will hear among others from Smetana, Dvorak, Suk, Novak, Martinu, as well as family Benda and the technically Moravian Janacek. Both Suk and Novak were pupils of Dvorak, and in the early 1900s Novak was considered his musical heir, particularly in Britain. The first program concludes with Suk’s overwhelming Asrael symphony, Asrael being the angel of death, and the symphony a response to the deaths of his wife (Dvořák’s daughter) and Dvořák himself.
It is not, however, allied with the ‘Bohemians’ of Paris, nor with Mimi of the frigid hand! Bohemia has a history of musical activity going back to at least the 12th century; in 1254, the records of Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral mention the acquisition of a new organ and in 1343, that there were about 100 choral performers.

In the final program we shall feature Mahler, who described himself as a Bohemian to the Germans, a German to the Austrians and a Jew to the World.
The 17th and 18th centuries were the flowering periods of Bohemian musical development, with the Prague Conservatorium founded in 1811. Soon the Romantic period arrived, and it had the same effect as in other countries, in stimulating an interest in native folk music, the use of the Czech language in opera and, most

In the 15th Century, the Polish people have elected a French noble, Henri de Valois, as their king. In disguise, he waits for his coronation but is homesick and doesn’t wish to be king. The nobility, led by Count Laski, are opposing his elevation and are supporting another claimant to the throne, the Archduke of Austria. The Duke of Fritelli has become Henri's chamberlain while remaining in league with Laski. A Polish lady, Alexina, whom Henri had known intimately in Venice, has become Fritelli’s wife in order to cover up the affair. She tells Fritelli that all preparations have been made to kidnap Henri. Earlier, Nangis, Henri’s friend, had been visited by Minka, whom he loves, but he hid her when others entered the room. She overheard the conversation between Fritelli and Alexina which she now relays to the disguised king. Fritelli confesses but Henri says that he wants to join the plot and that Fritelli is to introduce him as Count de Nangis. To the horror of the conspirators, Henri (as Nangis) tells them that the only way to ensure that the king does not return is to kill him that very night and Henri is chosen to do the deed. At an inn between Krakow and the Polish frontier, the innkeeper Basile is preparing to receive the new king of Poland. Fritelli arrives, informing him that the new king will not be Henri but the Archduke of Austria. Basile says it's all the same to him. Cries of 'long live the Archduke' are echoed by a stranger who has entered: Henri, making his escape from Poland. He is stunned to learn that he won't be able to complete his escape because all of the coaches have been sent off to meet the Archduke; he has to settle for a cart and an old nag. Henri hides when Alexina arrives. She tells Fritelli that she has changed sides and sent the Archduke back to Austria. Fritelli accuses her of continuing her Venetian affair. After many misconceptions about who has been murdered and who has not been murdered, the identity of the real king is revealed and Henri is reconciled to becoming king and receiving the acclamation of all assembled.

The revolutionary French army is fighting the occupying Austrian army in Italy. Stella has been locked in a cupboard at the convent for singing a seditious song. When the pupils are evacuated, Stella is forgotten. A few French troops arrive finding the frightened Stella who is reassured by the dashing Lieutenant Robert. Claudine, in charge of the provisions, has also been left behind and is jealous of the obvious attraction between Stella and Robert. The drum-major, Griolet, tries in vain to attract her interest. Monthabor tells of his unhappy marriage. After the soldiers leave, the Duc della Volta and Marquis Ernesto Bambini arrive and, when the Duke learns that Stella has been left alone with enemy soldiers, he hustles her away intending her to marry Bambini. Stella refuses. Although the French army arrives and Robert, Monthabor and Griolet take temporary residence in the palace, the Duke goes ahead with a party to celebrate Stella’s wedding. Monthabor comes face-to-face with the Duchess, who is his ex-wife and mother of his daughter, whose whereabouts are unknown. Stella and Robert admit their mutual love. Monthabor suspects that Stella is their long-lost child and, after questioning her about her childhood, he realises that she is his daughter. Stella announces to the assembled guests that she is French and the daughter of the drum-major. She has decided to follow her real father but at this point the Austrian army attacks. Claudine and Robert take refuge at an inn run by her uncle, a strongly pro-French activist. Stella arrives with Griolet and Monthabor, all in disguise. Robert is arrested and the Duke agrees to have him released on condition that Stella marries Bambini. The wedding is about to take place but the bridal veil conceals the fact that Claudine has secretly taken Stella's place. Robert, who does not know of the substitution, intervenes to prevent the sacrifice of the one he loves and the subterfuge is discovered. The furious Duke orders everyone arrested but, as the police lead Robert and Claudine away, the main French army arrives. The Duke prudently changes his allegiance and Robert is freed to go to his Stella and Claudine gives the faithful Griolet her hand and heart, and a double wedding can take place. Ba-ta-clan. Operetta in one act. Libretto by Ludovic Halévy. First performed Paris, 1855. Philippe Caillard Chorale; Jean-François Paillard O/Marcel Couraud. Erato DUE 20240 40 The Emperor Fé-ni-han is facing an insurrection. Because he does not speak Chinese, he has accidentally had the five most virtuous people in the land impaled. He is in fact a Frenchman, Anastase Nourrisson. In order to avoid execution, he had been forced to assume the role of Emperor. Other French persons are involved: Ké-ki-ka-ko who is the Viscount Alfred Cérisy, once shipwrecked on the coast of China, captured, tortured and condemned to only repeat the rebels' song Ba-ta-clan; Fé-an-nich-ton, a singer; and Virginie Durand, who was captured by the Emperor’s soldiers. Virginie and Alfred having met, decide to run away but are captured and sentenced to death. Anastase now decides to run away with Virginie and Alfred. Ko-ko-ri-ko, the leader of the insurrection, is also of French origin and he is ready to provide the means for their escape in order to become Emperor. All ends happily with a reprise of the Ba-ta-clan anthem, and Anastase, Virginie and Alfred departing for France. 17:00 SOCIETY SPOT Organ Music Society of Sydney With John Hanna 18:00 MUSIC OF THE SCREEN Prepared by Maureen Meers Herman, J Excerpts from Hello Dolly. At palace of the Chitoor, in Chittorgarh, the Prince, Ratan-Sen awaits the arrival of the Sultan of the Mogols, Alaouddin. The watchman proclaims the Sultan’s progress through the gates of the city, as the crowds gather, crowds who doubt the goodwill of the Mogol whose army is encamped on the far edge of the plain. Ratan-Sen meets the Sultan, who assures him that his motives are entirely peaceful. Ratan-Sen treats the Sultan to the dancing of his warriors, female slaves and palace women but none please the Sultan, whose curiosity will only be sated by the sight of the famous beauty, Padmâvatî. Ratan-Sen explains that she is his lawful wife and Alaouddin questions if she is as beautiful as her reputation suggests. Padmâvatî appears and after her beauty is revealed, Alaouddin names the price of peace to be the person of the Queen. Ratan-Sen immediately calls for war and the city erupts into chaos as Padmâvatî laments the disaster about to overtake the city. After the battle, a wounded and dying Ratan-Sen returns to Padmâvatî and, after a poignant farewell, she ends her husband’s life and his burial rites begin. As Padmâvatî submits to the flames of the funeral pyre, Alaouddin arrives, in time only to contemplate the scene of despair. 22:00 MUSIC OF THE NIGHT Prepared by James Nightingale Gubaidulina, S. Gabriella is overcome to discover that she has been deceived as she recognises Raoul who reproaches her for infidelity. The King arrives, proposing to reward Raoul for saving his life by having him marry Almeide, Flayel’s sister. Gabriella sends for Raoul in secret to tell him she still loves him, but their meeting is overheard by Almeide, who immediately sends for Flayel. Furious, he challenges Raoul to a duel and banishes Gabriella to a dungeon. Raoul is killed by Fayel who cuts out his heart and presents it to Gabriella in an urn. Volunteer Spotlight Robert Small
Pamela Newling talks to specialist expert in recorder music, Robert Small
Robert gives an affectionate description of his love of music, which began ‘as a kid’ when listening, with his Mum, to the latest World Record Club LPs when they arrived in the mail. La Mer, The Moldau, Grieg’s Piano Concerto - all the classics. He took up the recorder and soon after joined the Sydney Society of Recorder Players (SSRP) in 1983. This remains a passionate interest and Robert loves to present the Society’s program, which was his introduction to the station. Robert began programming in 2003 and presenting in 2005. He says: “I took on presenting because my programs were in specialist areas like recorder music where some background knowledge, interest and enthusiasm make a big difference to the engagement of the listener. I felt I could do a much better job of this than some of the duty presenters rostered to my programs.” Another program he really enjoys presenting is Sunday Morning Music because of the freedom it offers the presenter—more freedom than other programs. His warm voice and happy disposition also welcome listeners to Fine Music Breakfast. Robert says of his involvement with the station: “I enjoy the richness of the experience. The radio station is a truly extraordinary enterprise to be involved in, full of knowledgeable and fascinating people to talk with about music and all sorts of other things. I love the way the place brings together kindred spirits so willing to have a chat and make friends. The clockwork precision and organisation of the place never ceases to amaze me. I freely admit to relying on the security I think we all feel from such a safety blanket. Of course I have also increased my knowledge of music (that’s an understatement!), honed my skills of engagement, and constantly relearned managing complex technology that doesn’t stand still. It is also a place where I have been

encouraged to give back to the community, whether sitting on the board or committees, or training new presenters, or presenting Enjoy Learn and Discuss talks.” Asked about unforgettable music experiences, Robert says: “Listening to Vaughan William’s Tallis Fantasia for the first time was an absolute revelation, so mystical, other worldly and spiritual.” And another: “Playing trumpet in the Turrumburra Concert Band for the first time was nearly better than sex. The rush of blood, the excitement, the fear, the teamwork, the sheer joy of making music, wow!” A consultant metallurgist by profession, Robert plays recorder in Consort 8, Sydney’s ‘unique renaissance band’ and volunteers with St Pauls Burwood Parish Pantry. His busy life currently excludes time for sailing and trumpeting.

Listening To The Birds Dan Bickel shares Messiaen’s avian fascination Illustration by Lyndon Pike
Birds have long been associated with human music-making in almost all cultures. Some musicologists believe that birdsong – which employs rhythm, pitch relations and note combinations – had a major influence on music’s development, not only through imitation but also through inspiration, for example by reflecting the moods of a landscape.
Le merle noir, for flute and piano, was based on the blackbird’s song, and was followed by Réveil des oiseaux, Oiseaux exotiques and Catalogue d’oiseaux (a two and a half hour composition for piano, which incorporates the songs of 77 different species). Messiaen’s opera Saint-François d’Assise (he preferred to call it a ‘spectacle’) is testimony to both his dual inspirations and saw him travelling to Assisi (and New Caledonia!) to research birdsong.
There is a rich tradition of imitating birdsong in European music, with the nightingale and the cuckoo being especially popular. Some composers have incorporated recordings of birds into their music, such as Respighi with the nightingale in The Pines of Rome and the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara with nesting birds and migrating swans in his atmospheric Cantus Arcticus. Other music reflects bird behaviour, like the scratching hen in Rameau’s La gallina and the soaring flight depicted in Vaughan Williams’ well-known The Lark Ascending.
Messiaen travelled widely, both to attend musical events and to make tape recordings of exotic birds in the wild. In 1988, he attended the Australian Bicentennial celebrations and was delighted to be able to observe and record lyrebirds in Sherbrook Forest outside Melbourne. When told that the lyrebird steals other birds’ songs, he took offence. “No bird steals another bird’s song,” he protested. “It’s a lie. It’s a transcription!” The sounds of both lyrebird and kookaburra can be found in his Éclairs sur l’Au-Delà... (Illuminations of the Beyond...)
The 20th century composer who is probably most associated with birdsong is the French composer Olivier Messiaen. Fascinated by birds from an early age, this interest was encouraged by one of his teachers, Paul Dukas, who reportedly urged his pupils to “listen to the birds”. While a prisonerof-war during World War II, Messiaen composed and performed his Quatuor pour la fin du temps. He and the cellist would arrange their military watches so they could listen to the birds of the dawn chorus, and the composition included music which imitated the songs of the blackbird and the nightingale, played respectively by the clarinet and violin.
Messiaen’s evocations of birdsong are not, however, simple transcriptions but tone poems evoking the landscape, its colours and atmosphere. It has been remarked that: “Messiaen was a more conscientious ornithologist than any previous composer, and a more musical observer of birdsong than any previous ornithologist”.
Messiaen was a distinctive composer who was inspired both by the beauty of the natural world and by his deeply held Roman Catholic faith. In his music, he concentrated on the theology of joy, divine love and redemption rather than on sin. He saw birdsong as a direct link to the music of Heaven, with his duty being to portray it as accurately as possible. Birdsong is notated precisely in his compositions written after 1950:
Fine Music Sydney’s Birds and Music series will feature compositions by Messiaen in February, by Takashi Yoshimatsu (Japan) in April, and by John Luther Adams (USA) in June. Sunday Specials starting Sunday 28 February at 3pm

Fine Jazz has been part of Fine Music Sydney since the original broadcasting licence 45 years ago. Each of our 18 jazz presenters has their own focus from the 120-year history of jazz: 1900s classics; swing; 50s bebop; 60s cool jazz; bossa nova; jazz from 21C pop; Middle Eastern; and emergent jazz for tomorrow. This short series brings you the magic of jazz, expressed by presenters’ theme tunes.
Jazz Sketches – Robert Vale on Wednesdays at noon Theme: Groove Waltz (McCoy Tyner, 1963) McCoy Tyner Groove Waltz was released by McCoy Tyner on his third album Nights of Ballads and Blues in 1963. It followed his producer’s request to record “more straightforward jazz albums”, exhibiting a reserved elegance and tenderness that reveals the other side of his personality—a lover of melody and standards. At that time, he was halfway through a 5-year stint as pianist in the John Coltrane Quartet which yielded the landmark recordings A Love Supreme, Crescent, and Live at the Village Vanguard. The album has been described as providing room to develop classic statements on highlights like Monk’s Round Midnight, Ellington and Strayhorn’s Satin Doll, and Parker’s Star Eyes. Tyner and Bill Evans are considered by many to be the two most formative jazz pianist/composers of the second half of the 20th century. The tune Groove Waltz was stylistically new at the time, consistent with Robert’s playlist for Jazz Sketches. Noon daily, 7pm Monday to Saturday and 10pm on Sundays and Monday
Swing Sessions – John Buchanan on Mondays at noon Theme: Blue Room (Rogers & Hart, 1926) by Benny Goodman Blue Room was written as a show tune for a 1926 musical The Girl Friend by Rodgers and Hart. Recorded by The Revelers in 1926 and the Hamilton Sisters in 1927, its popularity increased when the Dorsey Brothers released it in 1933 and subsequently recorded in 1938 by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra as part of a Live at Carnegie Hall jazz concert. The event has been described as “the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz’s ‘coming out’ party to the world of ‘respectable’ music”. This was the era of swing. It was the popular music of the day. It was dance music. It was also the era of bands playing live-to-air on the radio. It epitomises John’s love and engagement with the music of these pre-war post-depression times. Happy cheerful dancing music on the radio. Jazz Pure and Simple – Maureen Meers on Thursday at noon Theme: Sophisticated Lady (Duke Ellington, 1932) by Don Burrows In writing this tune, Duke Ellington was inspired by three of his grade-school teachers. “They taught all winter and toured Europe in the summer. To me that spelled sophistication,” he said. It was composed in 1933 as an instrumental, featuring alto sax, clarinet, trombone and piano. Lyrics were added by Tin Pan Alley lyricist Mitchell Parish to Ellington’s lilting melody, telling the sorry tale of a wealthy love-lost socialite, smoking, drinking, never thinking of tomorrow. Ellington approved of Parish’s lyrics, calling them “wonderful— but not entirely fitted to my original conception”. It proved to be one of Ellington’s most popular and lucrative compositions. Don Burrows released it in 1992 as part of a three LP album. Burrows was central in the acceptance of jazz as a musical form to be “treated with the same seriousness accorded to other performing arts. ... For most Australians, he is … the embodiment of local jazz.” A stunning relaxed tune, befitting Maureen and her 1000 editions of Jazz, Pure & Simple.

Why Vintage Jazz is Cool Part 5 in Leita Hutching’s Why Jazz Is Cool series Illustration by Leita Hutchings
Could anything be cooler than Satchmo making “them big eyes”, or Miles Davis in a white singlet blowing his trumpet, body bent in uncanny grace? Is there anything more divine than Billie Holiday’s beautiful profile, her gaze set determinedly into the future, wearing an elegant coat and smoking? These were the celebrities of Jazz one hundred years ago, the early warriors of the Black Lives Matter movement. In their war on colour discrimination, the war against poverty, segregation, distribution of wealth, rights, and respect; all those pretty dresses, all those crisp suits and beautiful smiles, all the polish and perfection, belie the relevance and importance of the underlying politics. And as often happens, with the recognition of a new movement came a new expression in art, fashion, and music, the fusion of which became jazz. As Stanley Crouch puts it, “Jazz predicted the civil rights movement more than any other art in America”. One way to describe the quantum leap that happened musically is to look how the orchestra became the group, that instead of playing as a team, favoured a musician or solo. While Classical music generally defines the composition, tempo and expression of a piece, Jazz favours improvisation and individual interpretation. Amongst the complex chords, and delicate harmonies that Jazz prefers, the biggest innovation was the freshness, the improvisation, the play. You’re never guaranteed that what you’ve heard will ever be repeated exactly in the same way again, even with the same artist. Take Round Midnight composed by Thelonious Monk in 1941 and listen to his recording. Then to Till Bronner’s. Then Miles Davis. Then Ella Fitzgerald, and follow that by Michel Petrucciani, Andrea Motis,

JYOSHI, Samantha Farrell and Hank Jones … Each has a new attitude, with subtle nuances; each expresses their version. So, there are these musicians fooling around, just trying out stuff that appeals to them. They develop an understanding of musical progression and look to each other to express it; knowing their instruments so well, their hands just reach for the right chords or notes. These guys were the original Garage Band artists! It makes me laugh to think how punk rock is to jazz in concept.
FOUNDERS’
STUDIO HIRE Are you a musician looking to record an audition for an application, or are you wanting to record your own music?
Imagine it being illegal to hire a musician for your group because he was black … that’s what Benny Goodman did. It’s a musical genre, with a heritage forged in blood and politics and despair, but equally in musical innovation.
We have a studio ready for you to record in.
And just as fashion and politics evolve, music evolves also, and here we are with a beautiful expression of all that coolness, with artists like Najponk Trio, the Marsalis family and thousands of other amazing jazz artists. But without Satchmo and Lady Day and a hundred other vintage artists, we wouldn’t have the plethora of jazz today; they’re the real heroes of jazz. So, while your fingers are sticky and sweet with chocolate, celebrating the tradition of Valentine’s Day, think of the sweet sounds of a romantic, vintage singer like Billie Holliday; perhaps combine them - romance isn’t all chocolate and roses. Saturdays at 12 noon

Switcher I know you’re closed but please look into this... for the past months I’ve almost given up on your station for the beautiful music you used to have before. I listen to 100.6 London. It’s incredible. They have at present the top 300 & I’ve stayed up many nights just to listen to that incredible music. PLEASE take the time to listen to it... HAPPY NEW YEAR when you read this..
A collaborator with Anne Sofie von Otter once commented how her concerts and recordings had introduced her to so much beautiful music. Von Otter’s repertoire is extremely wide-ranging, and here she sings on an album of works composed by Caroline Shaw and performed by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra as part of its New Music for Old Instruments initiative. Both compositions are informed by the spirit of Handel. Is a Rose, the more immediately appealing work, is a setting of three poems by Shaw, Jacob Polley, and Robert Burns. It features von Otter and a string orchestra augmented by

Thank you, Roy, for sending me the excellent new recording from the Peer Gynt suite. I am now listening to it with pleasure but have turned off the radio to do so. They are a very interesting and talented group.
Let ‘er Rip! I would like to compliment Mr.Mcewan on today’s Concert Hall program. Absolutely beautiful music with interesting commentary. The Smetana and Borodin pieces have some exciting “let’er rip!” segments for the brass and percussion especially. Most enjoyable! Many thanks to you and the programmers.

Here at Fine Music Sydney, in February we are excited to launch our Emerging Artist packages. After a year’s break we are ready to invite Sydney artists to apply for our Artist in Residence and Kruger and Weatherley Scholarship packages.
We encourage the emerging artists of Sydney to apply for our Emerging Artist programs in 2021. Fine Music Sydney plays an important role in encouraging young musicians and music lovers in their ambitions to become professional musicians or broadcasters. Fine Music Sydney is an integral part of Sydney’s cultural landscape promoting and encouraging an active live classical music scene in our community and supporting music education.
The Listeners is a work for vocal soloists Avery Amereau and Dashon Burton, chorus and orchestra. Its theme is the way humans have, in Shaw’s words, “for centuries and millennia … looked out at the stars and wondered about the beyond” and it intersperses its settings of poetry with excerpts from a speech by Carl Sagan and a record launched into space on the Voyager probe.
Paul Ben-Haim: Symphony No.1; Pan; Pastorale variée
S Y D N E Y
It brings me great joy to see the buzz of our young, emerging artists and established musicians coming and going from our studios while their lively music drifts up the stairs into our offices. Watching these artists evolve from behind the scenes while they use this precious resource is by far the most enjoyable part of my role as General Manager. At Fine Music Sydney we continue to focus on our goal to promote Australian musicians and composers, with a deeper focus on young and emerging artists.
oboe and harpsichord, conveying both luxury and restraint.
The music of Paul Ben-Haim is not well known outside of the Jewish world, however a few significant CDs are now beginning to appear, including a new recording of his Symphony No. 1 on the Chandos label. Ben-Haim was born in Germany but was forced to flee in the 1930s, settling in Palestine and later becoming a central figure in the music world of the newly formed Israel. This recording from the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Omer Meir Wellber, comprises three impressive works. Pan, a tone poem for soprano and orchestra,
based on a poem by Heinrich Lautensack, is a lush and beautiful work, exquisitely performed by Claudia Barainsky on this recording. The Pastorale Variée for clarinet and strings is a work in which Ben-Haim felt that he had at last found his own voice in his adopted homeland. Composed during World War II, the Symphony No.1 is a striking and exciting work that Ben-Haim believed was impacted by the era’s “dreadful ravages of diabolical forces”.
The birthplace of this album by the Miles Davis Nonet was a 1948 weekly late-night radio broadcast from a New York nightclub. Live performances, then known as Birth of the Cool, were recorded individually, but it was not until 1951 that the 12 single acetates were incorporated into a 10” long playing record.
and French horn providing harmonies. This created a rich harmony, more lyrical, a gentler tempo, blending the horns rather than them playing off each other. This was the birth of cool.
A highly recommended recording. - James Nightingale
The Birth Of Cool Miles Davis Capitol
The instrumentation was a deliberate move from the sounds of big bands and bebop: pairing trumpet and alto saxophone, baritone saxophone and tuba providing counterpoint, and trombone

The continued success of Birth of the Cool is largely due to inspired compositions and arrangements by Gil Evans, John Lewis, Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan. Birth of the Cool is of historic and artistic importance as well as being a great jazz collection. - Lloyd Capps
