Part of Fine Music’s role has always been to support local musical events and initiatives. This month, Tessa Miles reviews Music in the Sky, ‘a journey from sunset to dreaming, space and sunrise; exciting all senses with live motion graphics and choreographed digital projection.’ It sounds wonderful, but it reminded me of the controversies surrounding Fantasia (1941), Disney’s ambitious animated attempt to popularise classical music. With overwhelmingly positive reviews from the film community and the public, the most strident criticism came from composers and music critics, who argued that presenting the classics with visual images robbed the musical pieces of their integrity, or indeed the listeners of their own interior imagery. We shall see whether Music in the Sky still enrages traditionalists who can’t stomach graphic accompaniment to Beethoven and Schubert, but the question the SMH reviewer posed about Fantasia in 1941 is still relevant: “can there be any relation between great music and great animated imagery... If there cannot be, what validity has the ballet?” You may have noticed that the station ID has been modified from Fine Music Sydney to 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. To explain the Board’s reasoning behind this move, I can do no better than to quote our Chairman, Michael Morton-Evans: “Research has shown us that as so many people remember and refer to us as 2MBS despite the name changes, it seemed sensible to add it to our call sign. It also aligns us with the other volunteer run radio stations in Melbourne and Brisbane and will hopefully open the doors to some national East Coast sponsorship.” david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

A remarkable woman Elaine Siversen highlights an exceptional career

Rossini admired the Spanish tenor, Manuel Garcia, so much that he created the role of Count Almaviva for him in The barber of Seville which premiered in 1816. Five years later, the Paris premiere of Otello took place with Garcia as Otello. It was in this same opera that Garcia’s daughter, Pauline, made her operatic debut as Desdemona in London in 1839. She had been trained in singing by her father and was, by this time, an acclaimed mezzo-soprano with a successful recital career in Paris. Pauline Viardot was one of the most exceptional mezzo-sopranos of the early 19th century who had great charisma on stage and a vocal range that allowed her to sing many operatic soprano roles. Her opera career was acclaimed and several roles were created for her, among them that of Fidès in Meyerbeer’s Le prophète (1849) which was a great triumph. After she encouraged Gounod to begin writing operas, he created the title role for her in his first opera, Sapho (1851).

Among the instrumentalists whom she accompanied was the renowned Belgian violinist, Charles de Bériot, also a family member. He became the second husband of Viardot’s sister, Maria Malibran. Maria had been taught singing by their father, Manuel Garcia, and he had ambitions for her to be the world’s greatest soprano. She was well on the way to fulfil his ambition with such a brilliant career that, by the age of 17, she had received acclaim in Paris, London, Europe and New York. However, at the age of 28, she collapsed on stage and died as the result of injuries sustained in an earlier fall from a horse.

As her voice aged, Viardot began to concentrate on her teaching career, for which she composed around 50 songs (although she had never intended to be a composer). She continued to give recitals and, in 1870, when she was 49, Brahms persuaded her to give the first public performance of his Alto rhapsody. Seven years later, when Saint-Saëns wrote Samson and Delilah, he had Viardot in mind to sing the title role but she declined because she felt that her voice had aged too much for opera. Nevertheless, Saint-Saëns dedicated the opera to her.

Despite this tragedy, Bériot remained close to the family. Early in her career, Pauline had married the writer Louis Viardot, who became her manager. Their son, Paul, a promising violinist, was mentored by Bériot, who was influential in gaining a place for the young man to study at the Brussels Conservatoire with Hubert Léonard, Bériot’s successor as chief violin instructor. The Viardots also had three daughters, one of whom became a pianist and composer and two who became concert singers.

Viardot’s other friends included many in the Paris artistic circle including Liszt and Chopin. She had studied piano with Liszt, who had a high opinion of her and considered that she could have made a career as a solo pianist. Instead, Viardot confined herself to playing duets with Chopin and accompanying singers and instrumentalists.

Why do we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Pauline Viardot? To ensure that her name, largely unknown, is remembered. Viardot was one of the most remarkable women of the age and this short article cannot do justice to her accomplishments.

Melbourne Digital Concert Hall – In Conversation Catherine Peake talks to Adele Schonhardt, Co-Director of the Melbourne Digital Concert Hall. Melbourne Digital Concert Hall (MDCH) was launched in 2020 as a response to the COVID crisis. How does it work?

A mission of MDCH is to support musicians with the use of technology. What role do you see technology playing in the musical landscape of the future?

MDCH is a live streaming platform that Chris Howlett and I created to support Australian musicians. We founded the company in March last year when we saw the impact of COVID-19 on our friends and colleagues. We couldn’t just sit back and watch them lose all their income, so we came up with the idea of streaming their concerts online and selling tickets so that people could watch safely from home.

As Chair and former Chair of 3MBS, the Melbourne sister station to Fine Music FM, Chris and I have long been aware of the crucial role that technology plays in drawing the music community together. We see it as a great equaliser, enabling musicians to reach fans everywhere, regardless of distance or circumstance. Livestreaming is the logical next step, particularly as the internet becomes more powerful and reliable.

With the help of many partners and supporters, we’ve since presented almost 400 concerts, enabling over 700 musicians and arts workers nationally to earn more than $1.4 million.

We’re so lucky to enjoy an enormous wealth of talent here in Australia. From emerging artists to established soloists and ensembles, we’re determined to bring you the full spectrum of talent, to make expensive technology accessible to everyone, and importantly, to ensure that the artists themselves remain front and centre when it comes to ticket income.

The concept is straightforward: you buy a ticket to enjoy a high-quality live-streamed concert at home; we pass on the full ticket price to the performers, with a modest booking fee keeping the cameras rolling. All MDCH livestreams come with 72-hour access, so you can also watch later if you’re busy on the night.

06

With COVID restrictions easing, what are the challenges of managing both online and live audiences? There are only benefits. Indeed, we see the hybrid model of in-person/online viewing as the way of the future. Not only can you see your favourite musicians live, even if distance, health or caring responsibilities prevent you from attending in person, it also gives you full flexibility if you do plan to go along but something comes up. Can’t get to the venue after all? Switch to a digital ticket and watch the next day.

artists around the country – see the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra in action, bask in the glorious sounds of Latitude 37 and the Flinders Quartet, or travel with us to the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. We’re excited about the season to come and hope you’ll join us, wherever you may be.

We see technology as a great

equaliser, enabling musicians to

reach fans everywhere, regardless

Importantly, it also safeguards artists and venues against sudden changes, as we saw recently with the Australian World Orchestra. They couldn’t get to Melbourne in lockdown, so we streamed their Sydney concert to their Victorian audience instead, picking up hundreds of international fans along the way.

of distance or circumstance.

What’s next for MDCH? MDCH is now organising concerts in other states, including NSW. What can Sydney Fine Music audience members expect from your 2021 season? We’re streaming 300 concerts nationally this year, so you have a wealth of opportunities to build your own season. Not only will you experience wonderful Sydney groups like the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Bach Akademie Australia, or Willoughby Symphony; you’ll also find Jane Rutter, Jenny Eriksson, Thomas Rann and Edward Neeman on the platform, plus a range of other NSW favourites in the months to come. And if you enjoy their music, you can branch out and discover great

What started as an emergency response to a crisis has grown beyond our wildest imaginings. We thought we might be lucky enough to raise a few thousand dollars for Australian musicians. Instead, we’ve witnessed a huge outpouring of support and seen many thousands of friends form a community around our artists when they needed it most. It’s been an incredibly touching and inspiring experience. Every day, we receive messages from music lovers everywhere asking us to keep MDCH going. That’s exactly what we plan to do, making the platform bigger and better as we go along so that you can enjoy the best live music and support artists from around the country, wherever you happen to be. Alexander Zemlinsky – the forgotten notch on Alma’s bedpost Michael Morton-Evans looks at the tumultuous liaison of a once forgotten composer

Zemlinsky is one of those composers who are not that well known these days, but whose work was held in high regard during his lifetime. He had been admitted to the Vienna Conservatory at the age of 13 and it was clear that he was musically talented. Johannes Brahms heard his compositions and was instrumental in persuading a publisher to publish his work. He went on to teach the young Arnold Schoenberg counterpoint and the two were to become lifelong friends. Despite Mahler having stolen his lover, he regarded the older man with enormous admiration and modelled his Lyric Symphony op 18 on Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. In 1911 he took over the operatic wing of the German Theatre in Prague and remained there for 16 years, before going to Berlin where, during the 1920s, he worked principally as a conductor.

I guess most music lovers have heard the cruel but funny song that American mathematics professor Tom Lehrer wrote about Alma Schindler: Her lovers were many and varied / from the day she began her beguine / There were three famous ones whom she married and God knows how many between. Our Alma had quite a varied love life at a time when a woman with multiple husbands and lovers was frowned upon. Composer Gustav Mahler, architect Walter Gropius, and novelist Franz Werfel all fell for her, and all three liaisons ended in either death or divorce. But there was a fourth lover that history has ignored, a composer largely forgotten in the musical world these days, but who became her composition teacher and took her virginity at the age of 21. He was Alexander von Zemlinsky. With a large aquiline nose and narrow little eyes hidden behind rimless spectacles, he was strangely unprepossessing to look at and yet young Alma, no Boticelli Venus herself, loved him and gave herself to him, ensuring however that their relationship remained a guarded secret.

His career came to a shuddering halt when the Nazis came to power, and Zemlinsky fled to America, but by now he was a broken man. He composed only a few works during the next couple of years and then, following a series of serious strokes, he died in 1942. The musical world almost immediately forgot him. It was not until the 1970s that his central works were performed and began to be recorded. His major works are now regularly played on this and other classical music radio stations around the world and are a perfect snapshot of the great changes that took place in the musical world between the 1890s and 1940s.

Alma used to tease Zemlinsky constantly about his ugly features, taunting him with remarks like how she could easily replace him ten times over; unsurprisingly he began to get a little tired of the ribbing and the relationship started to cool. She recorded in her diary that he was ‘dreadfully ugly, almost chinless’, and he in turn felt nauseated by her vanity, her salon and the ‘cliques of sclerotic souls’ she associated with.  Some 12 months later, while at a cocktail party in Vienna, Alma was introduced to the 40-year-old Gustav Mahler and that was that.

Revolutionary Angela Cockburn explores the music of uprising

On Sunday 11 July – which is as close to Bastille Day as a Sunday Special could get – I’ll be taking a look through the centuries at what composers do when the People take to the streets. You’ll find Paris gets more than its fair share of idealistic violence – it’s those narrow streets, so easy to barricade. London doesn’t really figure, in part because the People – in the shape of the House of Commons – were already represented in Parliament from 1341, and in part because the People – in the shape of the Lord Mayor and his Aldermen – controlled who could and who could not enter the walled City.

reflect popular sentiment, though sometimes the words are chosen (or changed) to manipulate popular sentiment instead. The Marseillaise and We Shall Overcome fall into this category. Other composers are inspired by the cries of Liberty and Freedom to create major works in support of the uprising of the day, sometimes using a choir to capture the raw feel of the revolutionaries in the street, but still employing classical musical conventions. Smetana had already written his Song of Freedom when he helped man the barricades in Prague in 1848, and Strauss’ Freedom March comes into this group, too.

When you start to look at how composers interact with revolution on their doorstep, there’s a range of responses, which, on the whole, match up with the different ways of making a living from music.

After the event is when the major works start to be created, often commissioned by whichever side won. Berlioz, who wandered out to see what was going on during the three days of the 1830 revolution (taking his gun with him just in case), wrote his Grande symphonie funèbre et triomphale ten years later. He was paid a lot of money by the government to celebrate a regime he didn’t really approve of and created a massive work for

The rawest, and arguably some of the most powerful music appears to come from the People themselves: or at least from the musicians they’d hear in the tavern or playing dance music at a wedding. It’s catchy, you can roar it out while marching along, and the words seem to

military bands to perform as they processed in the streets where the revolutionaries had fought. Wagner, who rather over-enthusiastically took part in the Dresden uprising (despite working for the local royal court at the time) thought the Berlioz work was unsurpassable. Clara Schumann, also caught up in the Dresden revolt, made a brave foray into the streets on a family rescue mission, and created one little musical comment that same year setting the song Forwards. The most expansive works are those written for fictionalised accounts, and of course that includes the music created for film and stage versions of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, a work which explores the humanity behind the politics, the despair, and the bravado. Honneger and Claude-Michel Schönberg both created some memorable music that brings that sprawling story to life. Join me – Angela Cockburn – for all this and more: Composers in Revolt starting in 1588 and finishing around 1968. 11 July, Sunday Special, 3pm

Great Jazz from FineMusic: Ella Fitzgerald Favourite Albums from the FineMusic Jazz Crew

Last month, our focus on great jazz from FineMusic centred on improvisation. When we talk with others, our minds are full of themes, ideas, and patterns. We develop a narrative of words, hopefully actively listening to others in the conversation. Whenever we talk, we improvise. Sometimes, we read someone else’s words, but we are improvising on the intonation.

There are great men and women singers and scat singers. Al Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Jelly Roll Morton; Aileen Stanley, Betty Carter, and Sarah Vaughan. And of course, perhaps the greatest, Ella Fitzgerald. Nominated by three of our jazz presenters for their favourite jazz albums, Ella Fitzgerald is often referred to as the First Lady of Song and the Queen of Jazz. Her voice was characterised as pure of tone with impeccable diction, timing, and intonation. But it was perhaps her improvisational ability, revealed in her scatting, that cast her as such a prominent jazz figure.

So too with great jazz singing. The words and the tune may sit on the score, but the great singers see the words, and hear the rhythm and sense the syncopation. They give life and meaning to the poetry and the melody. When the words are insufficient, they make the voice the instrument, lyric and word free, syllables in a stream that affect articulation and resonance.

The Favoured Albums Ella & Louis Los Angeles 1956 Verve Nominated by Sue Jowell – Jazz After Hours - Sundays at 10:00pm While Fitzgerald and Armstrong had collaborated in the 1940s, this was the first of three remarkable albums. Eleven ballads of slow or moderate tempo were selected by the founder of Verve Records, but Armstrong was given final say on key and song selection. He chose well, with standards from Gershwin, Berlin, Carmichael and Harburg to name but a few. Armstrong’s gravel voice matched against Fitzgerald’s unadulterated silky tones together with swinging Oscar Peterson piano and his trio, flamboyant Buddy Rich drums, soulful Ray Brown Bass, and indispensable Herb Ellis guitar makes this album an essential in any jazz library. Nothing gets better than this.

Fitzgerald and Pass…Again Studio album 1976 Pablo

Twelve Nights in Hollywood Crescendo Club , West Hollywood 2009 Verve

Nominated by Gail Monjo – Jazz After Hours Mondays at 10:00pm

Nominated by Alex Siegers – Friday Jazz Session – Fridays at 7:00pm

Fitzgerald had recorded a live album in London in 1974, including guitarist Joe Pass, considered by some as her best work. The following year she recorded for German television with Pass. Her voice was getting deeper but not declining, perhaps her strongest period. Whereas Armstrong’s gravelly voice contrasted with Fitzgerald’s voice, Joe Pass’s guitar worked to support and embellish it. It comprises 14 tracks, including a wordless Rain from Eugene Ford, Ellington’s Ain’t Got Nothing but the Blues, Lew Brown’s That Old Feeling, Rodgers & Hart’s You Took Advantage of Me and Jones & Kahn’s The One I Love. Her rendition of King & Stewart’s Tennessee Waltz has a decided swing.

Performed over ten nights in May 1961 and two nights in June 1962, the collection was not released till 2009, and perhaps captures vocalist Ella Fitzgerald at her peak. It is full of 76 brilliantly rendered songs, irrepressible warmth and humour, and stunning, breakneck scatting. Her backing quartet is Lou Levy on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Gus Johnson on drums, and Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass. The recording tapes lay forgotten in the vault for almost half a century, perhaps because of a previous, slightly butchered selection Ella in Hollywood, released in 1961. Its emergence is a combination of producer’s neglect, a jazz sleuth’s obsession, and a string of happy coincidences.

In the words of Fitzgerald’s biographer, Geoffrey Mark Fidelman, “Fitzgerald and Pass... Again is an almost perfect album”. In Gail’s words, “Fitzgerald’s voice is as much an instrument as Pass’ guitar”.  Together they’re flawless. For my money Ain’t Got Nothin’ but the Blues is the favourite. Ella sounds both sad and annoyed.

What makes these recordings truly exhilarating is hearing Fitzgerald at her rhythmic and inventive best. The New York Times described her improvising as “higher, lower, faster, more syncopated, more harmonically complex than usual…” This perfectly captures the joy this album brings to listeners. As the LA Times reviewed, you can imagine her “framed by a halo of lighting and smoke, beaming through a lilting melody, or sassily improvising about the sound, and the sense that she was having the time of her life.” Highlights might include Strayhorn’s Take the A Train which will never sound the same after Fitzgerald’s seven minutes of scatting. Perhaps the doo-woop spoof of Rodgers & Hart’s Blue Moon with off-the-cuff lyrics. There’s Goodman’s Stomping at the Savoy with powerful control and inventive scatting. Energy and warmth personified.

Fabulous.

The Magic of Music Captured in Words Nicky Gluch and Paul Cooke pay tribute to Marcel Proust

Book 5: By the time he was 25, Proust was a published author. While attempting to write his first novel, however, he became entangled with the Dreyfus affair. Proust sympathised with Dreyfus – the soldier from the Alsace region who shared his mother’s Jewish faith – but the affair divided French society in very ugly ways. In 1899, Proust discovered the art criticism of John Ruskin, and found a new sense of purpose, spurred further by the death of his parents in 1903 and 1905.

Book 1: On 10 May 1871, the Treaty of Frankfurt was signed, establishing the agreement between France and Prussia in the aftermath of the War of 1870. Exactly two months later, Jeanne Clémence Proust (née Weil), whose family was from the recently-ceded Alsace region, gave birth to a son, naming him Marcel. On 5 August, Proust was baptised in his father’s Catholic faith. In every other way, he was his mother’s son, their bond only strengthened by his weak health. Book 2: Musical Interlude #1 — What music did Proust hear in his childhood? Did it include Wagner and Beethoven, the two composers he mentions most often in his novel? Was he aware of Fauré’s first violin sonata, premiered in 1877? Or, through his mother’s family, of Naumbourg and David, composers in the Parisian Jewish tradition…

Book 6: Musical Interlude #3 — In 1911, increasingly bedridden, Proust took out a subscription to a théâtrophone, enabling him to listen to live opera performances via telephone. Regarding Beethoven’s late quartets and the music of Franck as his “principal spiritual nourishment”, in 1916 Proust arranged for an ensemble led by Gaston Poulet to perform string quartets in his bedroom. Such engagements with music allowed him to develop a “gift for describing music as sensory engagement, for emulating its flow in his own prose, and for giving voice to the interior monologue of a listener in the act of confronting something new”.

Book 3: From the age of 11, Proust studied at the Lycée Condorcet. There, he wrote for the class magazine, and came under the influence of his philosophy teacher, Alphonse Darlu. His most lasting education, however, occurred outside the classroom. His schoolfriends were the children of society hostesses, and Proust delighted in attending their salons, including at Versailles! Upon graduating, surprisingly for someone so ill, Proust served a year in the military at Orléans, enjoying the experience for its discipline and comradeship.

Book 7: At the age of 38, Proust began writing his magnum opus, In Search of Lost Time. It was his attempt to put on paper his philosophy, as elucidated by narrative drawn from his life and shaped by an allegorical search for truth. The book is a timepiece, capturing the politics of the Third Republic and its social mores, but ultimately, time beat Proust. He died before the final volumes could be revised, which made the book’s message ring all the more true.

Book 4: Musical Interlude #2 — Through his attendance at salons, Proust met many contemporary composers and wrote articles about them, including Saint-Saëns and Reynaldo Hahn (who set to music Proust’s Portraits de musiciens, and poems about Chopin, Gluck, Schumann and Mozart). In 1907 he himself hosted a concert, which included music from Couperin through to Chabrier, with an emphasis on Fauré, who was unfortunately unable to attend.

Volunteer Spotlight Xavier Bichon Pamela Newling talks to Xavier about a life in jazz How could a Parisian not love jazz with parents like Xavier’s? He believes his love of music comes from listening to Edith Piaf LPs on rotation at home because “they were the only records my parents ever bought!” Growing up in Paris, Xavier’s teenage work experience in a major French radio station involved “mostly bringing coffee to star presenters, but also my first musical frisson seeing prestigious classical and jazz artists performing live in a small studio”. He continues: “As a teenager, I was exposed to a lot of 80s pop and rock music but gradually I embraced jazz in my early twenties. Paris has always been a great city for intimate jazz gigs.” Outstanding musical memories are many, such as the chance to see English guitar legend Eric Clapton perform his favourite blues songs by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley. This was the catalyst for Xavier learning to play guitar.

I regard it as a privilege to

present a program for which I am

encouraged to showcase my passion for contemporary jazz.

“As for guitar, I have been playing for a very long time, but I tend to play the same stuff over and over. I enjoy playing jazz and blues on my Epiphone Joe Pass (a sixstring electric guitar) and I hope to join a jazz band again to play in local jazz clubs (if there are any left)!”

Fast-forward to the year 2000, when Xavier settled ‘Down Under’ and began a broadcast career with  SBS Radio. He first produced and presented the youth music program, Alchemy, and then became producer/journalist for SBS’s French Program, which included interviews with European jazz, pop and classical artists.

In addition to jazz, Xavier enjoys listening to classical music, especially Baroque composers. He cites two exquisite live performances, one by cellist Yo-Yo Ma who in 2019 presented his ‘Bach Project’ in Melbourne performing all six of J.S. Bach’s suites for solo cello. Of the other, viola da gamba master Jordi Savall’s Sydney concert with ancient music ensemble Hesperion XXI, together with his children Ferran and Arianna, he says, “the 500-yearold music they performed together was moving, sensitive and sublime!”

Xavier says: “One of my great joys in jazz is that it absorbs influences from different musical cultures, including the rich musical legacy of France and USA. Planet Jazz showcases the diversity of modern jazz music that is produced around the world, Australia included. I regard it as a privilege to present a program for which I am encouraged to showcase my passion for contemporary jazz.”

Live Performance Review Tessa Miles reviews Music in the Sky at the UNSW Roundhouse

An event created during the pandemic and promoted as an ‘immersive evening, accompanied by a 6-piece orchestra’, Music in the Sky was the inaugural event of Buzz Events and Co at the UNSW Roundhouse on the last weekend of May. This brand-new live music experience combined lights and visuals, akin to Vivid, with classical and contemporary music. The performance featured pianist Luke Howard, who narrowly missed being locked down in Melbourne, and the 6-piece ensemble, The Nano Symphony. The idea behind Music in the Sky is to slow down, recover from the collective struggles of the previous year, and embrace the possibilities of what the future can bring us. The ensemble performed pieces by Debussy and Eric Satie as well as contemporary classical compositions. Each piece of music was curated by event Creator and Executive Producer Keith Hong, Luke Howard and The Nano Symphony’s Neil and Catherine Thompson. The music is designed to take the audience on a journey from sunset to sunrise with imagery projected onto the white sheets strategically placed above the audience on the second-level railing above, and puzzle-like screens onstage surrounding the performers. I must admit I was expecting a more immersive light show as depicted in the promotional imagery, but the visuals of sunsets, space and the cosmos, fields and forests, and the finale of sunrise creating the hopes of new beginnings and possibilities, helped deliver the promised immersive experience. In addition to the imagery and music, the performance also included contemporary dance choreography, illustrating the journey from sunset to sunrise the audience was being led on. The choreography and technically strong dancers helped tie the experience together, representing different emotions that music and visuals alone cannot quite illustrate.

18

My only complaint was when the dancers performed in front of the stage and the choreography included floor work. The audience members lucky enough to be in the first two rows would have been able to see the dancers unrestricted, but I was unable to see all the choreography which did spoil the experience a little. Music in the Sky served as a great reminder to slow down and embrace the future, as life speeds up around us as we adjust to a new normal. Buzz Events and Co did a great job on their first event and have the potential to create even better immersive experiences in the future – worth keeping an eye open for their future creations if you’re a fan of similar events. Fine Music Sydney served as an event supporter, and after months of promotion it was great to escape for one evening, slow down, and see this concept finally brought to life.

CD REVIEWS Alchemy

Andrew Blanch and Ariel Nurhadi ABC 481 9101

Andrew Blanch and Ariel Nurhadi are two young Sydney-based classical guitarists who studied with Timothy Kain and Minh Le Hoang at the Australian National University, Canberra, where they met. They have been performing together since 2014, and Alchemy, a recently released collection of duo guitar works and arrangements, is their debut album. This album displays their talent with works from nine composers, spanning the ages from the French Baroque with Jean Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) to the late Australian composer/guitarist Philip Houghton (1954-2017). The album’s title, Alchemy, is the name of a short piece from Houghton’s Three

Duets, which was the first work that they performed together. In addition to its historical span, Alchemy takes us on a journey around the world, with works from France (Rameau and Debussy), Spain (Albéniz, Falla and Granados), Brazil (Gnattali), Argentina (Piazzolla), and Australia (Houghton and Madlem). The two guitarists demonstrate their instinctive rapport and the works in this album are beautifully executed. This disc is a must-have for those who appreciate guitar music. - Dan Bickel

Bower

Genevieve Lacey and Marshall McGuire ABC 4855894

The latest recording from Australia’s recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey is a beautiful collaboration with harpist Marshall McGuire. The attractive CD, with artwork by Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison, brings together Renaissance and Baroque music with contemporary and experimental styles tied together in an almost ambient aesthetic. Compiled during 2020, these Melbourne musicians have created an expression of comfort and solace that is at once whimsical, peaceful and enchanting. They have collaborated with a long list of Australian composers and exploratory musicians to build an album that is a journey of love and tender whispers from the harp

and recorder. The tracks flow from one to another with such grace that it feels impolite to play a single track or to dip in and out of the music. Bower is a genuine and heartfelt album that brings the warmth and character of these fine musicians together in music of hope, peace and solace in troubled times. A recording that welcomes and rewards close listening. - James Nightingale

Whole Lotta Love: The Music of Led Zeppelin

Calvaire, Franceschini, Hays and Le Fleming This is jazz! The quartet of drummer Chesky Records Obed Clavaire with Bob Francschini on saxophone, Kevin Hays on piano and Orlando Le Fleming on double bass play jazz arrangements, nine of Led Zeppelin’s most famous tracks including Immigrant Song, Kashmir, and Whole Lotta Love. Led Zeppelin tore into the world of popular music culture in the late 60s. The crown from the Beatles was handed to them, and deservedly so from a progressive perspective! In this album we have energetic and enthusiastic interpretation of Zeppelin.

20

Carefully crafted cover versions are genuinely welcomed, warm and wholesome renditions. Instrumentations are deliciously shaped to capture the feel of the true nature of Zeppelin but with an authentic cool jazz vibe. Let this genuine cross-pollination continue, with heart, soul and spirit! - Sophie McCulloch.

Raymond Hanson: Complete Piano Works Tonya Lemoh Grand Piano GP860-61

Red Door Ade Ishs Self-released

Revisit

Amanda Suwondo Independent

Raymond Hanson was a composer regarded by Larry Sitsky as belonging to an ‘in between generation’, not conservative but not radical either. He studied at the NSW Con and then lectured there for nearly three decades and is perhaps best remembered for that. This double CD gathers all his music for solo piano, from his first published work through to a couple of late miniatures. The major work is undoubtedly his Piano Sonata, a comparatively early piece: inspired by the invasion of Paris in the Second World War, it is by turns astringent and sombre, demonstrating

an affinity with the music of Hindemith (a composer and musicologist Hanson promoted among his students). Also worthy of note are his Episodes on an English Folk Song, which goes well beyond Percy Grainger and Vaughan Williams in its variations, and one of several works inspired by the natural world, Preludes — first recorded, perceptively, by Walter Gieseking for the ABC in 1952. An album worth seeking out; a composer worthy of re-appraisal. - Paul Cooke

The pandemic has had many impacts on the world of music. One imaginative response was from Melbourne’s RMIT University to provide a creative outlet for the sound and live production students. The Red Door project was conceived by pianist Ade Ishs, and the album has been released as Red Door. Joining Ishs is bassist David Gallagher and drummer Adam Donaldson. The album reflects the essence of jazz in the coming together of three outstanding musicians working together in an open honest lively and spontaneous way. All tracks were onetake, three being composed by Ishs, with one by Gallagher.

While a traditional jazz piano trio, Something Unspoken reveals a classical inflection and influence. It was formed out of battling inner demons, anxiety being diminished by a sense of hope – that something unspoken. Florence Street creates a sense of reflection and fondness, colourful memories and intimate rewards. Siam Valley is Gallagher’s composition, and presents a complex chord structure that allows the bass to shine with delightful syncopation and meandering melodies.

This Indonesia-born now Sydney-based pianist/composer leads her trio through a series of original compositions with influences from travels and tutors in both America and Australia. Her colleagues on the outing, drummer Gian Timothy Gho and the bassist Muhamed Mehmedbasic, provide the icing on the cake with equally fine musicianship as their leader. From the effervescence of her original compositions All the Way to Chino and Santa Monica’s Night to the slower paced The First Time, the trio take us on a modern contemporary jazz journey with the mood of the album proving truly captivating due to its individual character. Texture, improvisation and tone are at the heart of each piece with Suwondo’s

compositions well beyond the realm of the ordinary, and her charm gives it an energy which leaves the listener ready for more. She clearly has tons of technique with an assertive touch, and her pianism bubbles along with warmth and swing alongside the deep-tone rhythmic spin of Mehmedbasic’s bass and the endlessly skillful and at times captivating drumming of Gho.

21

The album has warmth and superb interplay between the three musicians. - Keith Pettigrew

This is a very impressive debut from a trio with promise of an equally exciting musical journey to come. - Barry O’Sullivan

New Beginnings

Thank you for the absolutely beautiful music programme this morning. We have moved house from regional NSW to Sydney and are still unpacking. Temporarily without a music system my Tivoli radios have been filling in, sending music right through the echo chamber that is our new home. The Mozart now is particularly glorious. Many, many thanks to all, transmitter donation on way. - Meg

Bravo, Brahms

The Brahms Symphony no 3 arranged for piano quartet was a great idea, and revealed what beautiful music it is, sometimes hidden by what some say is Brahms’ turgid orchestration. For me, the man can’t put a foot wrong, and I’ve got recordings of just about everything he wrote. Best wishes to all at MBS and thanks again. - Ken P.

The Name Game

Long-time subscriber, first time sending in a message. Very happy to hear 2MBS back in the name! Great music as well, keep up the good work! - George

14:30 SATURDAY MATINEE Operetta in the afternoon Prepared by Elaine Siversen Straus, O. The chocolate soldier. Operetta in three acts. Libretto by Rudolf Bernauer and Leopold Jacobson. First performed Vienna, 1908. BUMERLI: Johannes Martin Kränzle, bar NADINA POPOFF: Caroline Stein, sop ALEXIUS SPIRIDOFF: John Dickie, ten MASCHA: Martina Borst, mezz AURELIA POPOFF: Gertraud Wagner, sop Handel Collegium Cologne; Cologne WDR RO/Siegfried Köhler. Capriccio C5089 1:28 In 1885, Serbia and Bulgaria are at war. Nadina Popoff, daughter of the Bulgarian Colonel Popoff, is engaged to Major Alexius Spiridoff. Bumerli, a soldier, who has escaped the battle, climbs in through her bedroom

window. He is in a Serbian uniform but tells Nadina that he is a Swiss mercenary. She threatens to call for help but he points his revolver at her. When he puts it down, she grabs it and threatens him but he shows her that he has only chocolates in his ammunition pouch. Amused, Nadina calls him ‘little chocolate soldier’. Some Bulgarian soldiers arrive in pursuit of Bumerli who has hidden and Nadina assures them that she has not seen the intruder. Nadina's mother, Aurelia, and her young cousin, Mascha, find civilan clothes for Bumerli so that he can escape and each, unknown to the others, slips a photo of herself into his jacket pocket. The heroes are being welcomed home after the war is over. Nadina finds that Alexius is not the hero she imagined but is boastful and selfcentred. The ladies are embarrassed when Popoff tells them of a Swiss soldier in the Serbian army who told them a very funny story of escaping from a battle by hiding in a house where he was sheltered by three ladies who all fell in love with him. Bumerli returns and secretly returns the borrowed clothes to the ladies. Alone with Nadina, Bumerli confesses that he was drawn back by his love for her but he will now leave as she is to be married. Nadina asks for the return of her photograph but Bumerli had not looked in the pocket. When the ladies retrieve the photos, Nadina has Mascha’s instead and flies into a jealous fury when she finds a compromising message on the back. She declares that she no longer loves Alexius and the wedding is cancelled. Alexius challenges Bumerli to a duel, thinking that he will not accept but when Bumerli accepts, Alexius, terrified, thinks he might be happier with Mascha instead. It is soon revealed that Bumerli is the son of a wealthy Swiss businessman and therefore a suitable husband for Nadina. Excerpts from A waltz dream (1907). affections. Tulia loves Caio to whom she was once betrothed; he has abandoned her. Her thoughts turn to revenge. Cleonilla declares her love for Ostilio. Caio hears this and is in despair. Decio tells Ostilio that Caio is his rival. Caio’s declaration of love for Cleonilla is dismissed by her. He puts his feelings in a letter, gives it to Cleonilla, only to have it snatched from her by Ottone. Cleonilla says the letter is intended for Tulia; Ottone believes her. She continues to ignore Caio and when Ostilio arrives, she declares her love. An enraged Caio attacks Ostilio with a dagger but Cleonilla intervenes. Ottone arrives and Ostilio is revealed as Tulia, so he insists that Caio and Tulia must marry and all is resolved. 22:30 MUSIC OF THE NIGHT Prepared by Paul Cooke Henze, H. Telemanniana (1967). Opera Rara ORC 9 2:04 The action centres upon English King Edward III’s 1346 siege upon the French coastal city of Calais. The citizens of Calais boldly continue to refuse to surrender so Edward sends an envoy with terms of a compromise. The British will spare the people and city of Calais under one condition: they must choose six citizens of noble birth to die as an example to all rebellious cities of France. The French are horrified but Eustachio silences them and says the demand will be met. Six Frenchmen, including father and son Eustachio and Aurelio, volunteer to be sacrificed. King Edward is overjoyed that he shall have three crowns: those of France, Scotland and England. The hostages are taken to the King’s tent and prepare to meet their doom.
