The musical event in Sydney this month will be the return of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its new Chief Conductor Simone Young to the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. In addition to performing Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony the Orchestra will premiere an exciting new work from celebrated First Nations composer William Barton, who in the first part of a long interview with Andrew Bukenya, discusses the unique qualities of the didgeridoo, performing with classical orchestras, and his spiritual connection to his country and people through his music. June was an eventful month for jazz fans, and 2MBS Fine Music Sydney has been in the thick of it, partnering with SIMA, Jam-Orange, and Create New South Wales to launch the inaugural Orange Winter JazzFest. As official media partner for the event, we provided on-air promotions, profiled many of the artists performing there, and provided some of our jazz presenters as MCs to introduce numerous acts at the 55 different venues. You can read Barry O’Sullivan’s review of the performances on pages 16-17. Also this month, Keith Pettigrew profiles Ken Weatherly Jazz Scholar Kate Wadey, who was prominent in the Orange Winter JazzFest line-up, performing original compositions from her forthcoming album, Forever Like This. Listen to her interview with Barry on A Jazz Hour on 22 July, and read his review of her new CD. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Intermusicality: Philosophy, Romantic Literature and Music Nicky Gluch explores Spinoza’s attitude to music Historical Picture Archive / Alamy Stock Photo As some readers might know, since 2018 I have been working towards a PhD in musicology (and my thesis is in the process of being examined, so do wish me luck!). It is a Doctorate of Philosophy in the literal sense, for it takes as its theme the philosophy of musical leadership, with Baruch de Spinoza the principal subject. While the applicability of Spinoza’s ideas to conducting was never in question, about a year ago I was asked to substantiate whether Spinoza’s work had any direct ties to music. In researching this, I stumbled upon an article by a James C Morrison (as opposed to America’s James Douglas, or Australia’s James Lloyd) in which he claimed that Spinoza had no aesthetics: more, that his philosophy was ‘fundamentally alien to, even hostile towards, art and beauty’.

alone in considering this as somewhat different from pantheism but, for the sake of simplicity, let us accept that German Enlightenment thinkers understood Spinoza to be a pantheist. This association led to a fascinating rift in the intellectual circle known as the Pantheism Controversy (with Mendelssohn’s grandfather, Moses, one of the entangled). Within a generation, however, Spinoza’s pantheism came to be seen as deeply romantic. Goethe was attracted to the idea of an immanent, rather than transcendent God, and he influenced the Shelleys, who took further interest in Spinoza’s naturalism. But what has all this got to do with music? Well, I might be drawing a long bow, but I feel that Spinoza cannot be contra-aesthetics (and Australian professor Anthony Uhlmann strongly supports my case) if one considers that these proponents were not only writers but music lovers. It is not only that Eliot and the Shelleys attended numerous concerts and opera performances; no, they also wove music into their writing, using it as a form of powerful intertextuality to convey more than words ever could.

Now this struck a dissonant chord! If anything, Spinoza’s philosophy is ‘hostile’ to superstition, but that is not the same as imagination or any such synonym for creative fancy, of which Spinoza was a keen admirer. Further, and more personally, I would never have sought to apply Spinoza to conducting had I perceived his ideas as hostile to art. More fundamentally, I do not think that I, as an art lover, would have turned to a thinker who saw no place for creative practice. Pondering this, I recalled the names of key literary figures who had been proponents of Spinoza’s philosophy – Goethe, George Eliot, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Surely these writers would not have advocated for someone alien to their craft? In this question lay the seeds of a program, prepared by Paul Cooke, which features as our Sunday Special on 3 July at 3:00pm.

On 3 July you will get to hear an array of works referenced by Shelley and Eliot, specifically in Eliot’s Jewish-themed novel, Daniel Deronda. The program begins with some Sephardic songs as a nod to Spinoza’s heritage, and ends with Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No 1, a favourite of Eliot’s and a nod to the ties that bind Spinoza to the German Romantics. Curious to learn more? Well then, visit the Sydney Conservatorium between 9 August and 9 October and you can view my library exhibition, I conduct, therefore I am, which further explores these themes.

To give some background, Spinoza’s allure to writers such as Goethe was his (perceived) pantheism. In his most famous book, Ethics, published in 1677, Spinoza defines God not as the great creator, but rather as the singular infinite which he terms Nature. Now I am not

The Ages of Excellence Michael Morton-Evans looks at the effect of age on music

A recent report on the ages at which professional swimmers reached their peak showed that for sprint swimming events, men peak around 24 and women peak at roughly 22. Endurance swimmers peak about a year earlier for both sexes. Male and female marathoners are at their best at ages 30 and 29, respectively. Male and female triathletes peak at 27 years old. Meanwhile, with golfers the average age at which they reach their peak is the early thirties, and for footballers it’s between 27 and 29. So what then is the age that musicians reach their peak? The answer appears to be somewhere between seven and 100! Let’s have a look at a selection of professional musicians and determine if we can when they reached any form of perfection in their respective art. The first is obviously Mozart, who began composing at the age of five and would have gone on, I suspect, into old age had he not died at the age of 36. His music was pretty well perfect from the beginning. The extraordinary English composer Alma Deutscher also began composing at five. By seven she’d written a short opera, The Sweeper of Dreams, at nine a violin concerto, and at ten her first full-length opera, Cinderella. At 14 she appeared in America’s Carnegie Hall showcasing her own compositions. Last year, at the age of 16, she was admitted to the elite Viennese University of Music and the Arts conducting course, the youngest ever to have been so. Let’s hope she outlives Mozart. In the program The Ages of Excellence, which I have put together for broadcast on Sunday 24 July, I’ve taken 11 different musical examples of how excellence has been reached at various ages. I start with American violinist Joshua Bell, who gave his first public appearance at the age of six. It would appear that violinists have the second longest performing life of all musicians, after that of pianists.

When it comes to wind players, they can’t start early. They need to have gained all their second teeth before they can develop an embouchure. And it really takes until they are about 21 before stamina and good breath control is easier for them. Of course, none of this matters if you’re going to be a conductor, and the British conductor Daniel Harding made his professional debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra when he was 19. He’s now 47 and much in demand. I once saw the 80-year-old Sir Thomas Beecham conduct seated in a chair, but it’s unusual to see conductors much beyond the age of 70, with a few exceptions, as there indeed are to all these rules. When it comes to singers, mezzo sopranos will start making their mark around the age of 24 or 25, though Cecilia Bartoli began taking the leads in operas at the age of 22. Twenty-five onwards is also about the age that light lyric tenors and sopranos will start making themselves felt. Australian tenor David Hobson gave his first professional performance at the age of 27. And that’s about the age that we start hearing new baritones. Their voice needs to mature longer than a tenor’s, rather like leaving red wine in the vat for longer for it to age. Placido Domingo is a good case in point. He began as a tenor and, as his voice slowly matured over the years, he became a baritone. At the age of 30 wind players reach their peak of performance. I showcase the Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger in this category. This is the age that heldentenors and full-throated sopranos come to the boil, singers such as Maria Callas. And then a decade later the Wagnerian singers make their grand appearance.

06

By the age of 50 we begin to see less and less of the lyric tenors and light sopranos, and stamina may become a problem with wind and brass players. As for the heavier voices, once they get into their 60s it’s beginning to get more difficult, as with baritones like Geraint Evans who retired at the age of 62. At this age string players are likely to think less Paganini and more Tosti. By their 80s pianists and conductors are still at it, but most others have now dropped by the wayside. The amazing American pianist Ruth Slenczynska has just produced a new CD at the ripe old age of 97, so as long as the arthritis doesn’t get you, you can go on sitting at the piano forever. The last word goes to the Polish American pianist Mieczyslaw Horazowski who had one of the longest professional careers known. He was still performing right up to his 100th birthday and died at the age of 101. The Ages of Excellence, Sunday Special, July 24

First Person William Barton Andrew Bukenya talks to Australia’s didgeridoo virtuoso

William Barton is an Indigenous didgeridoo player who grew up on a cattle station near Mt Isa in northwest Queensland, learning the didgeridoo from his uncle, Arthur Peterson, an elder of the Wannyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga people. His catalogue of achievements started at the age of 17 with an invitation to perform with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and continued with landmark performances with the Philharmonic Orchestras of London and Berlin and at historic events at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2019, Anzac Cove and the Beijing Olympics. His awards include Best Original Score for a Mainstage Production at the 2018 Sydney Theatre Awards and an ARIA in 2012 for Best Classical Album – Kalkadungu: Music for Didjeridu and Orchestra. In this, the first of two interviews with Fine Music Magazine, he discusses with Andrew Bukenya the unique qualities of the didgeridoo, his spiritual connection to his country and people through his music, and his collaborations with Western composers Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards.

Before we begin, I’d just like to acknowledge that I’m conducting this interview here on Pannerong land. William, you have become a wonderful ambassador for your instrument, the didgeridoo. For people who know little about didgeridoos, if you had to list three main characteristics or adjectives to describe its uniqueness, what comes to mind for you?

keep on sustaining your culture. You keep on the breath of life, to the next generation of storytellers. And what I mean by that is like the mystery that I always loved as a young child listening to my uncles play and how powerful that was. That awe, that magic; I wanted to be a part of that. And it still is a mystery to me because the more you go in life, the more you become in tune with your instrument, but also not just the instrument, but where it comes from. Again, that branch of the tree, that tree of life and the passing of the culture from generation to generation.

A direct connection to the earth that flows through the trees, that branch of the tree that holds so much history of our ancestral song lines. And when that instrument or that tree, or branch of the tree, is gifted to you as a young person, or even if you’re older and you’re finding your journey in life, that tree is of knowledge, and has so much power and song and memory. Because, the tree, when there’s water, holds memories in it as well. And so when you keep on playing through that instrument, you

You decided that this is it, the didgeridoo is really your life. Is it safe to say you would describe it as a calling? Yeah, it is a calling. I guess there’s a path that’s chosen for you, but also the path that I chose. So that makes it even more special, because that is my calling, to pass on the history of the instrument, even though I play in a very contemporary context. It doesn’t matter if I’m in Carnegie Hall or one of the magnificent, amazing concert halls in Europe. Sometimes people hear me say that we have our own natural amphitheatres of the Australian bushland as well. It’s not me alone out there on that solo, being the soloist in front of this big grand orchestra. It’s actually because when I’m successful, my people are successful, so are all those around me. That’s the way I look at it, because I’m in a position to do so. My uncle, my mum and dad and my elders gave me that gift to unite people in this modern day and age with this instrument, and that sort of links people together through the sound, the feeling, our history. So here you are, a musical or spiritual and physical ambassador for the Kalkadungu people. Going from nature’s orchestra, and learning at a very young age to appreciate all these different colours and feelings, and interpreting them for your instrument, did it feel completely natural to go from that ‘natural’ orchestra to a man-made orchestra? I feel I can answer that with confidence and say it felt natural, only because I was a young, innocent kid with so much responsibility on my shoulders when I walked into that first orchestral concert when I was 17 years old, at the University of Queensland. But I’ve been thinking of it very much lately and am trying to interpret it in words. I feel that you need the symphonic orchestra with all its classical instruments and sonic frequency to create the beauty and complexity of the Australian bushland. It’s so simple, yet so complex. It’s like the wind rustling through the trees and then the shimmering on the water, and all those things contribute to a technique, a violin technique, a vocal technique. And it’s the way of course, you know how you project your own embodiment.

To answer your question, it felt like a natural thing, but maybe it was a calling as well. I felt familiar with the classical sound because of mum playing music to me as a child and before I was born into the world. And so it was there, like the ingredients of the landscape were there. I just had to find the right composers to work with, then turn that world around. So it wasn’t tokenistic, you know? I wanted to be the voice in creating new repertoire for the classical world and make it real for our ancestors. I think of the amazing nationalist composers of the world like Mahler, Beethoven, Sibelius; they wrote about their landscape. They were elders of their landscape, even if they were young, they wrote about their landscape. And so both our people, and your people pass on that language of their own song lines of their own symphony of the world, in that bushland. Can you name some other composers that have influenced you? I worked with Peter Sculthorpe for the last ten years of his life, and so that was a big moment for me entering into the world of Australian classical repertoire. But I felt at home with his music and that of Ross Edwards. And, I say to people, classical music in Australia is only just over 200 years old. It’s very new, and so I think now we’re in a unique chapter in Australian history, and perhaps the world, the algorithm of the world where a lot more indigeneity is coming through in a very meaningful way with orchestras. So we’re seeing it here, and sister Deborah Cheetham’s been doing it as well.

Volunteer Spotlight Leita Hutchings Pamela Newling talks to Leita Hutchings When Leita first volunteered, she worked with Liz Terracini (then Station Manager) in the Fine Music Office. She says she really enjoyed seeing the machinations of the Station from the inside out. Leita ticked everything on the volunteer form because the only thing she really didn’t want to do was stuff envelopes. Imagine her surprise when she was told that she would start training to be a Presenter. She comments: “I didn’t even know I’d ticked that box!” Asked about the source of her love of music, Leita says: “I grew up in a house surrounded by natural bush. My Dad was a self-taught jazz pianist, and my mother was the daughter of a politician, so the fabric of my childhood was running barefoot in the bush with my brothers, through the house where Dad played for hours, then sitting at the table where Mum taught us table manners, fit to sit down with the Queen. Music is in my DNA.” Like many other presenters, Leita has broad musical tastes and says: “I like most forms of music. I really love 60s music, R&B, alternate soulers like Cleo Sol … a bit of the Stones when cooking, Kovacs, Mojo Juju … she was amazing live! Honestly, I could go on and on ... just not country or polka for me.” Of memorable performances, Leita recalls: “In 2021, I saw Vince Jones at the Sydney Con. From my seat, I was so close to the musicians; I could see them breathe; see their expressions immersed in their playing. And Vince Jones’ body language revealed his gratitude for being amongst those musicians, his empathy for the music, and all his gestures which revealed his humility. It was beautiful – he sang from a place much deeper than his heart.” Another outstanding performance recently came Leita’s way. At the time we talked, she was about to embark on hosting the Orange Winter Jazz Festival in June. She said “I’m really excited about that! It’ll be so great to be right in the middle of all those musicians; up close to the liveliness of producing that music, and then sharing that excitement with an audience … could life be much better?”

Alongside all this musical delight, Leita took a pause from Architecture Studies at 20, briefly worked in advertising, then became a teacher in the Arts: “I’ve renovated and flipped houses along the way too. I was working on a house about six years ago, when I decided I needed more music in my life, and volunteered at Fine Music.” She adds: “Art is an enduring interest for me. I have a girlfriend in the theatre also, so I’m fortunate – I get to see quite a bit of live theatre. I love live music and host a club once a month.” Urban Jazz Lounge – Saturdays 12.00 noon

High Five with Andrew Speight By Barry O’Sullivan Before relocating to the United States, Andrew Speight was a leading saxophone player on the Australian jazz scene. He came of age playing with visiting American jazz legends like Percy Heath, Nat Adderley, and Benny Carter as they passed through Sydney. These were friends and associates of his late father, musician and bandleader John Speight, the founding director of the Manly Jazz Festival. Of the five hundred entrants from around the world in the Thelonius Monk International Saxophone Competition in Washington D.C. USA, Andrew was the only non-American prize winner. Andrew has been leading jazz programs at Michigan State University and is now at San Francisco State University. Barry O’Sullivan caught up with him on a recent return visit to Australia.

What is your current musical project? My latest project is called the House of Bop. I started doing live streams every Sunday from week one of the Covid lockdown and so far I have done a hundred and six. I began playing solo saxophone at home, then moved to a friend’s backyard performing with my quintet. I moved it to my living room, and then turned it into a jazz club, incorporating a recording and video studio of the best quality I could design. In November of last year, I recorded my current jazz band. We’ve got at least three LPs of content that will come out shortly on vinyl at the audiophile level.

curriculums, both there and here. Many of the earlier jazz educators/sages have said that they weren’t invited to the jazz education party. Jazz education in America was remodeled or invented in the 1960s and refined in the 1970s to the current academic settings. In many ways, it has poorly summed up the first sixty years of jazz history and music and its learning practices. Unfortunately, the flight simulator system created for jazz education in America has such a cognitive bias. It often does not see or comprehend how to incorporate the oral traditions that existed in Jazz before 1960.

How has being a musician in the USA differed from your early Australian musical experiences? The first thing about being in America is you are a small fish in a big sea – the jazz world. In the USA, I was mentored and played with some of the undisputed jazz masters, so I spent my time documenting their music and performing with them while they were still around. There were also good musicians here in Australia whom I looked up, like James Morrison and Dale Barlow who were the main featured soloists in my father’s Young Northside Big Band.

What kind of music do you listen to at home, and what are your outside interests? My musical influences and listening at home now are classic jazz tracks by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Miles Davis, etc. I also love albums curated and produced by people like Quincy Jones. He has exquisite taste and gives musicians the freedom to be themselves and to push boundaries. I have also been listening to some great music from a couple of my students, one of whom, saxophonist Marco Albonetti, has produced what I think is a breathtaking tango album with an orchestra. I also listen to a classical saxophonist Kiyomi Sakura, another student of mine. I play around mechanically with my vintage Porsches at home, and I can talk to you at length about steam engines, steamships, locomotives, and ocean liners.

What are some of the aspects of the American music education syllabus that could be incorporated into our music education system? I have spent many years researching and documenting this. I am interested in returning to Australia and getting the oral tradition that was ignored for over sixty years back into the current

Who are your mentors and what external activities nourish your musical output?

The Manly Jazz Festival is scheduled for 1-3 October 2022. FineJazz at 2MBS Fine Music Sydney will be there.

One of my primary mentors is the famous Australian yachtsman Iain Murray who is a friend. He makes me think very differently about music and art. I still follow sailing and love Grand Prix and Formula One car racing. On this trip down to Sydney, along with the long-awaited get-together with family, one of my primary aims was to get the Manly Jazz Festival back on track as a live event in 2022. In 2007 my sister Caroline and I took over the reins as artistic Directors after my father passed. It is the longest-running jazz festival in Australia and one of the largest free jazz festivals in the world, with one of the most diverse and varied programs. The Manly Jazz Festival will be bigger and better and more innovative than ever this year. Online developments will make it state of the art for future festivals.

FineJazz Happenings Persistence yields to magic July 2022 – Keith Pettigrew Kate Wadey – Fine Music Sydney’s Weatherly Jazz Scholar (2019) In 2019, Fine Music Sydney awarded the inaugural Ken Weatherly Jazz Scholarship to songstress Kate Wadey. Ken had been a jazz presenter at Fine Music for five years and was a passionate jazz lover. It was his bequest that enable us to create an annual jazz scholarship for young Australian jazz musicians to further their careers in jazz. It comprises support, recording and promotion opportunities.

Her persistence though the trials of closed studios and venues, the magical diversion into motherhood, and stalled collaboration with musicians has led to an album of refined, gentle jazz with intelligent lyrics over stylish melodies. Each track was developed from the inkling of a tune to which Kate added lyrics, the whole being developed collaboratively. Each track has superb balance between the musicians and her sweet and assured vocals. But more about the music in Barry O’Sullivan’s CD review in this edition of Fine Music Magazine.

Kate Wadey was originally from Adelaide, where she completed her honours in acting, but has become a regular Sydneysider, with singing early and trad jazz and the American Songbook her passions. She was our inaugural recipient of the Weatherley Jazz Scholarship, and her project was to develop new songs in collaboration with local musicians, to record them and release a new CD Forever Like This. However, progress became complicated by the arrival of the pandemic. And then there was arrival of her baby son.

For this, Barry invited Kate into the studio as guest in his Friday program A Jazz Hour*. They discuss her musical background, the Weatherley Scholarship, and her musical influences. And a few tracks from her sublime album. Kate also has two release gigs to celebrate the new CD: Friday, 22 July at the Avoca Beach Theatre, in Avoca Beach (to be covered and reviewed by FineJazz in a later edition of the Fine Music Magazine) and Thursday, 28 July at Johnston Street Jazz, in Annandale. “A sweet, sure voice that exudes charm and sophistication.” An album of magic. No wonder she was our inaugural Weatherley scholar. *The interview can be heard on A Jazz Hour on 22 July at noon, or OnDemand.

Live Review Orange Winter JazzFest By Barry O’Sullivan SIMA and Jam-Orange with media partners 2MBS FineMusic Sydney

Orange, a beautiful and historic city in the Central Western region of New South Wales, is renowned for its award-winning restaurants, cool-climate wines, fabulous fresh produce, and well-known coffee roasters: it’s truly a foodie’s mecca! In June this year, it also became a music mecca with the inaugural Orange Winter JazzFest held on the weekend of June 10 – 12 in a variety of venues including three local churches, two hotels, the Orange Conservatorium, and the Orange Civic Theatre.

s on s i orr The M The JazzFest featured established musicians from Sydney and Melbourne, as well as a plethora of local artists and bands. Programmed and created by the Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA), in association with the Orange City Council and Create New South Wales, 2MBS Fine Music Sydney was the official media partner for the event, creating pre-production of on-air promotions, plus interviews with some of the artists performing there, as well as providing some of our jazz presenters as MCs to introduce numerous acts at the variety of venues. Some of the JazzFest highlights included the Friday night opening concert of vocalist and trumpeter Vince Jones and his band who traversed the huge catalog of popular songs he has recorded over the years, from his original compositions to some classic all-time favorites from the Great American Songbook. Saturday delivered a stellar performance from Freedman jazz fellow Hilary Geddes on guitar with her Quartet featuring original compositions from her debut album Parkside.

The avant-garde was well represented by Phil Slater’s Dark Pattern, another super-group quintet of Sydney musicians, and the trio Lisathe, combining nostalgic pedal steel guitar melodies with electric bass grooves and exploratory percussion.

Providing a sneak peek into the future of jazz in Australia were the youthful musicians of Jahl Heshi led by Harry Sutherland on piano and Lachy Hamilton on saxophone. They gained many fans with music skillfully delivered.

There were so many opportunities to hear stunning solos, amazing duets, big band folk and bluegrass, Cajun music from Louisiana, the sway of Aloha No’s ukulele and pedal steel capturing the soul of Hawaii, to gypsy music and raucous hoedowns, that one found oneself immersed in a world of music far away and detached from the reality of life. Throw in a dusting of June snow, and you had a spectacular winter music wonderland that was so enjoyable to live in, even if only for a few days.

Vocalists Mahalia Barnes and Jo Fabro gave their audiences some deep soul and lots of funk, while the traditional ensembles, Queen Porter Stomp and Cope Street Parade reminded jazz fans of where and how it all began. Fine Music Sydney Ken Weatherley Scholar and vocalist Kate Wadey sang original compositions from her newly released album, as well as some standards, as did Emma Pask and her Quartet, to very appreciative and engaged audiences. There was jazz/roots fusion from The Vampires, and ethnic-inspired jazz fusion from The Eishan Ensemble led by tar player, Hamed Sadeghi. Visions of Nar, a progressive new voice in jazz with new music offering hope in the world and a celebration of new beginnings, was led by the pianist Zela Margossian, who also performed on a separate bill with her fabulous quintet.

Live Performance Review: A Chorus Line Tessa Miles reviews the revival of the iconic musical

One of the many shows affected in Australia was the Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s A Chorus Line. After many lockdowns and changes in cast, the show finally opened at The Sydney Opera House in March 2022, two years after it was set to open. The stories and characters of A Chorus Line are based on real life and explore the backstory of each character through vignettes. Each story integrates perfectly with the songs and dance numbers showcasing the struggles, hard work, hopes, fears and frustrations of each character. A Chorus Line was first performed in 1975 and was the longest running show on Broadway until Cats surpassed it in 1997. The show has been performed and revived all around the world including the West End and multiple times in Australia. Its iconic music has featured several times on the hit series Glee and the opening number I Hope I Get It has been a top trending dance number on TikTok amongst the dance and musical theatre communities. The show remains relevant since its first performance in 1975 and takes on an entirely different meaning since the pandemic and arts shut down.

18

A Chorus Line celebrates the art form of dance, and honours anybody who has worked hard to be in a show as part of the chorus. It shines a bright light on the unsung heroes, the performers in a chorus line or ensemble, who build the story, the vision, and the vocals, and help bring the story to life, often not receiving the recognition they deserve.

One of the standout performances is from Angelique Cassimatis who plays Cassie, a dancer who has found some success, but is looking to get back to her roots after failing to find work as a solo performer. Angelique, whose own career has a long list of credits, has a stunning solo moment performing an incredibly emotional dance number that translates the struggles, frustrations, fears, anxieties and desperation into movement.

Those who have committed any time to learning dance can recognise the drive and hunger of the characters onstage just needing to be given that one shot. The song What I Did for Love towards the end of the show resonates with so many performers for whom dance is their first love.

A moment so breathtaking, it earned Angelique a mid-show standing ovation. Solo moments in musical theatre don’t typically receive such a thunderous spontaneous reception, and something I have only ever witnessed once for a vocal performance in Jagged Little Pill.

At the helm of the Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s production is Amy Campbell, whose phenomenal career gives her the experience to direct and choreograph such an iconic show. While Amy’s choreography stays true to the original, it adds a modern feel and celebrates the diversity of dance, allowing each performer to display their incredible athleticism, art, and technique.

While A Chorus Line has now closed, I hope its rave reviews and reception inspires production companies in Australia to revive iconic musical theatre shows and add a modern twist for a new audience.

CD REVIEWS Dora Pejacevic: Piano Concerto; Symphony Peter Donohoe, piano; BBC SO; Sakari Oramo, conductor Chandos CHSA 5299

Research into the work of minor composers of the early part of the 20th century has unearthed a few gems in recent years, and the music of the Croatian composer, Dora Pejačević is another welcome addition to the musical picture of the period. Pejačević had a privileged upbringing but was also caught up in the turbulence of the times, including nursing in the Great War, while demanding that her music be accepted on her own terms. This recording on the Chandos label brings us her only Piano Concerto and her only Symphony. These are works in the

Late Romantic style, featuring more than a little bombast and a full range of emotional characters. The CD liner notes are extensive and interesting, adding greatly to the understanding of the music and Pejačević’s story. The piano playing of Peter Donohoe is precise and pleasing and the BBC Symphony Orchestra is authoritatively led by Sakari Oramo on this sparkling recording. — James Nightingale

Fable

Jacinta Dennett, harp Move Records MCD 630

Jacinta Dennett is an Australian harpist, and this album gathers a number of compositions for solo harp by Australian women composers. They range chronologically from Peggy Glanville-Hicks’ Sonata for harp, written in 1950-51 for the Spanish harpist Nicanor Zabaleta and still performed by him more than 30 years later, to a work commissioned by Dennett, Alicia Grant’s Three pieces for harp, a depiction of a coastal environment. Other pieces which evoke aquatic themes are Miriam Hyde’s Sunlit waterfall and Johanna Selleck’s Spindrift. These are balanced

20

by Eve Duncan’s sparse and stifling The sun behind it, burning it, and Elena KatsChernin’s spooky Chamber of horrors. The title track, Fable, is a 1967 work by Helen Gifford: while it is a technical tour de force, the harmonics, glissandi, and other effects allow the composer ‘to suggest the mystery of an old legend, to conjure up the magic in fabled places, or the splendour of another age’. Comprehensive liner notes allow the listener to appreciate the different techniques employed to create a variety of moods. — Paul Cooke

Flor

Gretchen Parlato Artist release. Available from Bandcamp.

US singer/lyricist Gretchen Parlato’s outstanding 2021 release Flor comprises a set of pieces performed on her 2018 tour of Australia and New Zealand; some Brazilian bossa, some tunes reflecting her focus on motherhood and her own inner child, and an interpretation of a J S Bach minuet. On several tracks, Parlato either adds some vocalese, or some delightful and appropriate scatting. Think here of Bobby McFerrin, whose influence she acknowledges. Accompanying musicians include Brazilian guitarist and bossa exponent Marcel Camaro, creative

percussionist Leo Costa and jazz cellist Artyam Manukyan. Events in Parlato’s life which prevailed in the lead up to this recording were empowering. In 2014 when aged in her late 30s, she became a mother and put her career on hold. She has now re-emerged with a recording which evidences both her motherly joy and a new higher standard of performance, “a blossoming, an opening, an offering, a return.” Track five What does a lion say? says it all.

It has taken Kate Wadey three years to craft this recording from its initial beginnings as the first 2MBS Fine Music Sydney’s Ken Weatherly Scholar in 2019. Wadey is songwriter and vocalist on an album of delightful original compositions. These incorporate jazz piano-driven solos and creative collaborations with saxophonists Chris O’Dear and Justin Fermino, guitarists Ben Panucci, Arthur Washington and Peter Koopman, pianists Matt McMahon, Harry Sutherland and Andrew Scott, plus a slight hint of Antonín Dvořák on the title track. From the first track, If Only, the album’s tone is set to capture the affinity between the instrumentalist’s music and Wadey’s

voice. There is some genuine musical magic evident throughout, especially on the tracks, One More Chance, Expecting Song, and Forever Like This, which best showcase Wadey’s exceptional personal sound and torch song vocal approach. It is an album brimming with sublime vocals from Wadey, fine soloists, and some excellent arrangements from Andrew Scott and Sam Dobson (who also plays bass on the album). It is also released as a vinyl edition, available from Wadey’s website www.katewadey.com

between Raoul and the woman whom he has saved, Valentine, daughter of Catholic leader, St Bris. She is promised to Nevers and has come to ask him to release her after the Queen has instructed her to break her engagement. She knows that Valentine is in love with Raoul and arranges a meeting between them, but Raoul thinks that Valentine is Nevers’ mistress and rejects her. The Catholic noblemen conspire to kill Raoul but Valentine has overheard the plot and warns his retainer, Marcel. The fight is averted when the Queen arrives. The marriage of Valentine and Nevers goes ahead. Raoul hears from the Queen that Valentine had asked Nevers to release her. He visits Valentine and she hides him when the Catholic noblemen arrive. He overhears them plan a massacre of the Huguenots on St Bartholomew’s night. Only Nevers refuses and he becomes a prisoner and is killed. Raoul rushes to the Huguenot leaders, who are ignorant of the massacre that has begun, and summons them to battle. Valentine begs Raoul to adopt her faith and marry her but he refuses to sacrifice his religion so she decides to become a Huguenot. The Huguenot forces are overwhelmed and women and children sheltering in a church are massacred by the Catholic forces. Raoul, Valentine and Marcel are killed in the churchyard when they are found by the troops of her father, St Bris. Too late, St Bris discovers that he has ordered the murder of his own daughter. Naxos 8.574094 14 14:30 SATURDAY MATINEE Operetta in the afternoon Prepared by Paul Cooke Jones, S. The geisha. Musical comedy in two acts. Libretto by Owen Hall. Lyrics by Harry Greenbank. First performed London, 1896. Helios CDH55245 1:17 A shipload of English naval officers visits the Tea House of Ten Thousand Joys in search of tea and female company. Lieutenant Reginald Fairfax flirts with O Mimosa San, the head geisha. Marquis Imari, Chief of Police and Governor of the Province, wants to marry Mimosa but Mimosa has her own true love, Captain Katana. If Mimosa were to marry, Wun-Hi would lose his most profitable attraction. Wun-Hi's French interpreter, Juliette Diamant, is pursuing the Marquis. The leader of a party of English ladies is concerned that Reggie, who gives Mimosa a lesson in the Western art of kissing, is straying from his fiancée Molly Seamore and summons her. An angry Marquis orders the tea house to be closed and the geishas auctioned off. Mimosa suggests to Molly that she dress up as a geisha to win Reggie back. At the auction, out-manoeuvred by the English, the Marquis fails in his bid to purchase Mimosa but does succeed in buying Roli Poli, who is actually Molly. Later in the chrysanthemum gardens of the Imari palace, where the Marquis is determined to marry Molly, still in disguise as Roli Poli, Mimosa suggests substituting Juliette for Molly during the wedding ceremony. The Marquis thus ends up marrying Juliette, but accepts his fate philosophically. Molly is reunited with Reggie, happy to marry a British sailor rather than a foreign nobleman. Mimosa, having escaped the clutches of both Reggie and the Marquis, is free to marry Captain Katana. Planquette, R. Overture to Les cloches de Corneville (1866). New Philharmonia O/ Richard Bonynge. At a party in Paris, the artists’ model, Sapho, whose real name is Fanny, meets Jean, a younger man from Provence. The awkward young man falls in love with the glamorous Fanny and they leave together. At Jean’s apartment, his parents and the young girl, Irene, encounter Fanny, whose dominating presence shows that Jean is now more concerned with her than with his family. At a restaurant, Jean encounters the artistic crowd at whose party he first met Fanny. They tease him with stories of her past lovers, driving him into confusion and rage. When Fanny arrives, Jean spurns her and leaves. Fanny rages at the gossiping artists. At their home, Jean finds and opens the box of letters that Fanny keeps. He forces her to read the letters to him and burn them one by one. Having discovered Fanny’s secrets, Jean leaves, angrily rejecting her. Returning to Avignon, he begs forgiveness from his mother. The provincial calm is interrupted by the arrival of Fanny, who has followed him. When Jean reminds her of her past and rejects her again, the defeated Fanny leaves. Returning to the home that she and Jean had shared, Fanny is collecting her belongings, preparing to leave, when Jean arrives and pleads with her, saying that he is now ready to abandon all family obligation to be with her. Reconciled, Jean falls asleep but Fanny cannot ask him to make such a terrible sacrifice and she quietly leaves. 22:30 MUSIC OF THE NIGHT Prepared by James Nightingale Boulanger, L. Nocturne (1911). EMI 5 59828 2 3:03 Guercoeur, the democratic and wise leader of a medieval city, has died in battle defending his city-state. In Paradise, he begs to be able to return to earth to defend his people and to the love of his wife, Giselle. The Goddess of Truth grants his wish but the Goddess of Suffering demands that his pride be punished. On earth, he finds that Giselle is now the lover of his best friend, Heurtal, who intends to marry her and rule the people as a despot. Guercoeur forgives Giselle but she returns to the arms of her lover and Guercoeur is murdered by Heurtal’s supporters. Disillusioned with humanity, Guercoeur returns to Paradise, where he is greeted by the Goddess of Truth who explains that his pride has now been replaced by hope. She assures him that, despite human weaknesses, a great age of humanity lies ahead. Guercoeur’s body is buried and covered in flowers to sleep for ever. Ibert, J. Four songs of Don Quichotte (1932). have him released on condition that Stella marries Bambini. The wedding is about to take place but the bridal veil conceals the fact that Claudine has secretly taken Stella's place. Robert, who does not know of the substitution, intervenes to prevent the sacrifice of the one he loves and the subterfuge is discovered. The furious Duke orders everyone arrested. The main French army arrives. The Duke prudently changes his allegiance and Robert is freed to go to his Stella, and Claudine gives the faithful Griolet her hand and heart, and a double wedding can take place.

Claudine, in charge of the provisions, has also been left behind and the drum-major, Griolet, finds her very attractive. After the French soldiers leave, the Italians, the Duke of Volta and Marquis Bambini, arrive. The Duke decides that Stella should marry Bambini. She refuses but the Duke goes ahead with a party to celebrate the wedding. Monthabor comes face to face with the Duchess who is his ex-wife and mother of his daughter whose whereabouts are unknown. He realises that Stella is their daughter. Stella and Robert admit their mutual love. Stella announces to the assembled guests that she is French and Griolet’s daughter. The Austrian army attacks. Claudine and Robert take refuge at an inn run by her uncle, a strongly pro-French activist. Stella arrives with Griolet and Monthabor, all in disguise. Robert is arrested and the Duke agrees to
