NOTES FROM THE EDITOR
From the 5th to the 22nd of July, 32 of the world’s finest aspiring pianists will travel to Sydney to take part in the Sydney International Piano Competition. To call it a nightmarish marathon is almost an understatement. With over $200,000 in prizes up for grabs, the pressure is intense – but with the promise of international fame and recognition, the potential rewards are immense. Michael MortonEvans examines the complicated rules and guidelines of the application process, and the lead up to the Finals, where the top six contestants will perform two concertos with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, without sheet music.
The Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, whose breathy, seductive vocals helped to popularise the Bossa Nova with her iconic recording of The Girl from Ipanema, has died, aged 83. Labelled by Stan Getz as ‘just a housewife’, she battled the sexism and misogynistic attitudes prevalent in the music business of the time to make the song the second-most recorded in popular music, just behind the Beatles’ Yesterday. Lyndon Pyke re-imagines the life of this graceful, underrated singer, who received only $120 for her famous recording, the standard studio session rate of the day.
Have you ever fantasised about leaving your humdrum existence for pastures new, and jetting off to a more romantic life in another country? There are plenty of Australians in the Arts who have: creative spirits like Clive James, Barry Humphries, Jeffrey Smart, Robert Hughes, Kylie Minogue, to name but a few. Originally from Sydney, singer/songwriter Lucy Kiely has lived and worked on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast for almost a decade. She talks to Barry O’Sullivan about how the move to Italy inspired her successful career and enriched her life as a human being.

England’s great survivor
Paul Roper surveys the achievement of William Byrd
In an age when life expectancy was brutally shorter than ours, 16th and 17th century Europe yielded several composers whose lives were outstandingly long and productive. Last year we celebrated Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656) and Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672). This month we honour William Byrd, who died 400 years ago at the age of about eighty. It was previously thought he was exactly eighty when he died, but recent research suggests he may have been born slightly earlier than 1543. Byrd is acknowledged as the greatest English composer of the late Renaissance, and we celebrate with a series of programs this month.
Byrd was a survivor in another sense as well. He remained Catholic at a time when followers of the Roman church (the ‘Old Religion’) were subject to public persecution and private hostility within the doctrinal and political turbulence of 16th century England. Whether a Catholic from birth or by choice, Byrd was active in what we might call England’s Catholic underground – which included noble families and courtiers – from the early 1570s. Nonetheless, he became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1572, which followed a prestigious appointment in 1563 as organist and choirmaster at Lincoln Cathedral. Byrd had family in Lincolnshire and may have been born there.
Despite sanctions against him and his family members, including a fine of £200 for ‘recusancy’ (adherence to Catholicism), Byrd continued to provide music for state occasions and for use in the Anglican and Catholic rites alike. His first publication, a 1575 collection of Latin (!) motets in collaboration with his teacher Thomas Tallis, was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth. Byrd’s involvement with the Chapel Royal lessened from the early 1590s; he moved to the country, close to his Catholic patrons, and focused his energies on music for that tradition, including his three well-known settings of the Mass.
In all his sacred music, Byrd’s achievement was to infuse the already strong Tudor English polyphonic tradition with new stylistic elements derived from the Continent (as practised by contemporaries such as Orlande de Lassus). Never having travelled, he absorbed these influences through the printing press and from foreign composers working in England. Byrd also gave new and vigorous expression to native English genres: consort music, songs for voices and viols, and music for keyboard. The Chapel Royal noted his death, on 4 July 1623, with the epithet ‘A Father of Music’.
All this and more will be featured on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney throughout July. Each edition of Baroque and Before (10pm on Fridays) is devoted to celebrating Byrd’s music and placing it in the context of his time. In addition, his major Anglican work, the Great Service, can be heard in Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm on 22 July together with the Mass for four voices. And on the anniversary of Byrd’s death on Tuesday 4 July there will be a tribute at 2pm. On our early music broadcasts in July, Byrd is truly the word.
The Sydney International Piano Competition: The marathon begins
Michael Morton-Evans guides us through the gruelling stages that performers endure
It’s July. By now all the aspiring pianists around the world have learned whether they were successful and made the cut for the 32 competitors who will battle it out on the keyboard for this year’s winner. Spare a thought for all those who wanted to take part but missed the cut. Like the successful bunch, they had to submit an audition video which included a biography, professional colour photographs, documentation of musical studies, names and contacts of at least two musicians of standing to support the application and documentation of musical activity in the last five years. The video had to include solo piano works by at least three composers. Now that was just to apply!
Under the direction of the Artistic Director, eminent pianist Piers Lane AO, the four judges then pick 32 competitors. Now things start to get even more nightmarish. The Preliminaries consist of two rounds; first a 20-minute recital where the competitors can choose their own pieces, by at least two composers, then in Round Two, a 30-minute recital with different composers to Round One.
From here, just 12 competitors will be chosen to advance to the Semi-Finals. Now things get even tougher. Once again there are two rounds. Round One is a 70-minute recital in which the repertoire is ’own choice’ which should be built round a theme. The competitors are not only expected to play, but also to give verbal introductions to the works. As the rules put it, these may be just factual, or more personal, serious, or witty. Short encores must be included in the performance.
Round Two involves accompanying either Sydney Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster violinist Andrew Haveron, or Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin. The interesting thing here is that the competitors must prepare two pieces from a list of works for violin and piano, and two pieces for cello and piano. They won’t know until the last minute which of the two instruments, violin or cello, they will be expected to accompany. Six of the dozen will play with the violin, while six will play with the cello.
From there, six will be chosen for the Finals. Again, there are two rounds, the first being a pre-1800 concerto by either Bach, Beethoven or Mozart chosen from a given list and performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Then, in Round Two, a post-1800 concerto from a list of 15 composers. And of course, throughout all these rounds, the competitor is expected to play without sheet music, except for the chamber music round.
And all this for the Ernest Hutcheson first prize of $50,000 and the hopes that bookings will come in from all over the world. It is truly a pianistic marathon.
The prince who launched a rocket
Anne-Louise Luccarini tells the story of the generous man who made Mannheim famous.
Frederick the Great wasn’t wrong when he said Carl Theodor was a Glücksschwein, which does not mean ‘lucky pig’ but ‘good luck pig’. Good luck pigs are still to be found on charm bracelets, especially in Germany. What Frederick meant was that Carl Theodor had acquired all his lands and wealth through inheritance, without even once having to go to war, as was customary. The dour Thomas Carlyle, a century later, was less kind, describing Carl Theodor as a “poor idle creature, of purely egoistical, ornamental, dilettante nature; sunk in theatricals, bastard children and the like; much praised by Voltaire, who sometimes used to visit him.” Sour grapes, maybe?
Theodor’s first stroke of luck was to have been born a boy. Under Salic law, which had bound the whole of Europe even before Charlemagne established the Holy Roman Empire in the year 800, a female could not inherit. On the other hand, a dynastic marriage, planned for a female child of noble origin at her birth, could secure a political alliance for a family and enrich the coffers with her dowry. The downside was that historical rivals like the Wittelsbachs and the crafty Habsburgs ended up interrelated. It was a calculated risk.
As the Rhineland branches of the Wittelsbachs failing to produce sons, one by one their titles and wealth devolved to Carl Theodor. There was also the matter of the childless widow of one his predecessors. Dowager Electress Maria Luisa, beautiful and cultivated, was the last surviving Medici, daughter of Cosimo III. Being Italian, she inherited all their stupendous wealth, but before
leaving Mannheim to live out her life in Florence, she allocated funds to underpin the development of music, theatre and the arts, taking care that legal safeguards were in place to prevent the money from being used in any other way.
Carl Theodor was eighteen when he accompanied his cousin, the reigning Elector Palatine, to Frankfurt-on-Main for the coronation of the new Holy Roman Emperor, a more momentous occasion than expected, because for the first time in 300 years a Wittelsbach was elected.
Vienna was considering its options, when a sneaky land-grab by the young King Friedrich of Prussia unleashed the first war of the Austrian Succession. But young Carl Theodor had his head full of music and books. He spotted an outstandingly good Bohemian violinist by the name of Jan Vaclav Stamic in the court orchestra, hired him on the spot and took him back to Mannheim.
Within three years, Johann Wenzel Stamitz was the concertmaster. Christian Cannabich, the court flautist’s son, joined the orchestra, studying with Stamitz and replacing him as leader after his untimely death in 1757. The pay was good, the ranks filled out, and within ten years the renown of the disciplined Mannheim orchestra resounded in Europe. ‘An army of generals’, wrote the ubiquitous Dr Burney.
The fecundity of Mannheim was not limited to artistic creativity: the singers, dancers and musicians all married each other, and trained their offspring. From June to September, the court moved to Schwetzingen, where the ducal hunting lodge had been expanded into a superb schloss and park. There was new music every evening; theatre, a concert, opera or ballet. The company was lodged free of charge in the tiny village beside the schloss. The prominent kapellmeister, Ignaz Holzbauer, preferred to spend the summer in peace and quiet in Mannheim, devoting his time to composition and study.
When the 21-year-old job-hunting Mozart arrived there in late 1777, he and his mother were welcomed by the older generation, who remembered them from the brief family visit to Schwetzingen in the summer of 1763 when Wolfgang was seven. Happy and excited, he socialised, made music, and absorbed the sound
of what was now known as the ‘Mannheim school’. Mozart didn’t get the job, but Mannheim left its mark. He sent his sister the first two movements of a new sonata (K309). Nannerl wrote back, “I love it! I can tell that you wrote it in Mannheim.”
It doesn’t feature the ‘Mannheim sigh’, the ‘Mannheim steamroller’, or the ‘Mannheim rocket’ (a lively opening phrase leaping upwards, usually in arpeggios), but Mozart used it repeatedly throughout the rest of his career – notably in the last movement of his 40th symphony.
Mozart wasn’t the only one to be influenced. The traces of Mannheim were carried well into the following century.

High Five: Lucy Kiely
Barry O’Sullivan talks with the singer/songwriter
Originally from Sydney, Lucy Kiely has lived and worked on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast of Italy for almost a decade. She has experience as a singer and songwriter, including co-writing the official Platinum Jubilee song for Queen Elizabeth II, performed at Buckingham Palace in 2022 by Grammy Award-winning artist Gregory Porter, and writing, recording, and releasing four albums of her original work.
What were your earliest musical experiences, and how did they lead you to your current musical career?
I was fortunate enough to attend many wonderful concerts in my youth, including Roberta Flack, Burt Bacharach, Renée Geyer, Elton John, and Diana Krall. All these artists had an indelible influence on my musicality. Throughout school, I always sang in choirs including the Patricia Amphlett (aka Little Pattie) sixties-inspired vocal group The Musettes. I have her to thank for giving me the most valuable gift: teaching me all those gorgeous jazz standards, which are to this day, still at the very heart of my repertoire. She was the singing teacher at my local high school, and each week would introduce me to a different standard such as Summertime, My Funny Valentine, Misty, or Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, and copy them onto a cassette tape for me to learn ahead of the next lesson. I distinctly remember her imploring my thirteen-year-old self to sing the heartache of the lyric my life a wreck you’re making, something that still comes to mind at any time that I sing, Body and Soul.
You are also a composer and songwriter. What processes and influences do you utilise?
I have quite an unorthodox approach to songwriting. I don’t play the piano or guitar, so I write and record all my demos completely a cappella. I write all the music and lyrics myself in a combination of English and Italian, then one of my talented musical colleagues will take care of the arrangements and scores for me before heading into the studio. I am fascinated by the idea of ‘inspiration of place,’ so I think of an album concept and then write a soundscape to bring that world to life
uniquely and beautifully. My two full-length albums, Mediterraneo and Un’Estate Italiana, are inspired by my life on the Amalfi Coast, the beauty of the sea, the summer rituals, the lemon groves, the olive trees, and the mystical surroundings of the Island of Capri. I would best describe my original music as ‘la dolce vita jazz’ and consider many of my songs love letters to my adoptive home.
You have relocated your life and career to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Name some of the challenges you have encountered in doing so.
I moved to the Amalfi Coast almost a decade ago and had to start anew, by learning a new language, making new friends, meeting new musical collaborators, and finding my place as a singer, songwriter, and a person. I have learnt that it takes time to garner and nourish meaningful musical relationships, but luckily, music is very much a universal language which transcends cultural divides. I feel very strongly that if I had not taken the risk to relocate my life, I would never have written the music I have, nor had the life experiences I have, and my life is richer for it.
Apart from your busy musical career, what are some of your other interests?
When I’m not singing, I can usually be found on the back of a scooter, by the seaside or in our vegetable garden. I’m passionate about growing and cooking organic vegetables according to their seasons, and the Mediterranean climate on the Amalfi Coast coupled with the fertile soil courtesy of Mount Vesuvius means that even a novice gardener such as myself can enjoy a beautiful crop year-round.
It’s five o’clock on a Sunday afternoon, and you want to relax and chill, listening to some of your favourite musical artists. Whom would you choose and why?
In Italy, five o’clock is considered aperitivo time which is an almost sacred ritual involving pouring yourself a pre-dinner refreshment and watching the sunset. To accompany my aperitivo, I listen to anything by João Gilberto such as Desafinado, Corcovado, Estate, Wave, Manhã de Carnaval or S’Wonderful. I adore bossa nova and particularly love the lush orchestration and exquisite arrangements of Gilberto’s recordings. I also love Miles Davis and his recording of Stella by Starlight, and even named my daughter after this particular tune.

Lyndon Pike re-imagines the life of singer Astrud Gilberto who died on 5 June this year
83-year-old Astrud Gilberto gazes out of the window of her residence at the Society Hill Towers overlooking the Derwent River in Philadelphia; one of her cats lazily stretches on a rug, dappled by sunlight beaming in between the open curtains. On the walls of her home hang several paintings she has recently made, while photos of her two sons, João Marcelo and Gregory, standing with their wives and her grandchildren, enjoy pride of place on the mantle.
As Astrud surveys the whorls and eddies of the river, she allows memories that she has long chosen to push aside to enter the room. She recalls a vibrant spring day some sixty years earlier that saw her step into the A&R Recording Studios in New York City, utterly unaware that her life was about to change completely, for good, and indeed for worse.
She recalls her beloved husband, João Gilberto, her musical confidant and sometime singing partner, a man she loved deeply. Hers was a love she shared with many millions of other Brazilians; in awe of his brilliance, proud and enamoured of the gift of the Bossa Nova sound he was instrumental in creating; a sound which had a mutual kinship with the cool West Coast jazz scene popular at the time.
On that day in 1963, João was set to record a landmark album with saxophonist Stan Getz. Astrud accompanied her husband to the studio. The producer on board was Creed Taylor; both men looked at Astrud with a passing glance that suggested her presence wasn’t particularly welcomed. She recalls the bullish, gruff attitude that Stan Getz exhibited, and how it had made her uneasy.
Thankfully, also attending the session was pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Antonio was an affable and good-natured man who, two years earlier, had written a song with his drinking buddy Vinícius de Moraes, at a Rio bar called Veloso. Inspiration for the song came from a local girl named Heloísa Pinheiro, who would walk along the promenade sporting a daring two-piece bikini to buy cigarettes for her mother. The song was The Girl from Ipanema.
Astrud remembers the talk around the studio was that jazz singer Sarah Vaughan would be attending to sing the female lead on the Ipanema track, however Creed Taylor liked to work fast, and studio time was expensive. He decided he didn’t have time to wait for the arrangements with Sarah Vaughn to be made. Astrud spoke up, suggesting she could accompany her husband on vocals, as she could sing in English. She also could have sung in French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese if required, but Astrud was not one to boast.
In the control booth, listening to the playback of the song, both Taylor and Getz were visibly excited. Getz hears her breathy, languid take on the song, and tells her she is going to be a star. For Astrud, this unexpected appearance on her husband’s recording, her first professional session in a studio, did indeed make her a star, but at a cost.
She recalls the excitement of receiving an advance copy of the album, Getz/Gilberto, holding it in her hands, excited for both her and her husband. She admires the cover art and pores over the liner notes. But something is missing. Where is her name? She scans the credits again, assuming she’s missed something, but her name is nowhere to be found on the sleeve.
That summer in 1964, the single version of Girl from Ipanema is released minus the Portuguese vocal track João had sung on the album version, focusing instead on Astrud’s soft and sensual voice. She learns later that it has become the second-most recorded song in popular music, just behind the Beatles’ Yesterday. A sad half-smile etches its way across her face when she recalls her total payment for the song: $120 – the standard studio session rate of the day.
Astrud had never wanted to be a businesswoman. She loved animals, music, and had a trust in others that was in line with her gentle nature. It was a mystery to her why people could brazenly take advantage of, and betray her so cruelly. Refilling her cats’ water bowl, the words of Stan Getz come back to her for the first time in years: “She was just a housewife then, and I put her on that record because I wanted The Girl from Ipanema sung in English –which João couldn’t do. Ipanema was a hit, and that was a lucky break for her.”
She recalls these words with a detachment she has forced herself to maintain. Both Getz and Taylor had tried to take credit for her inclusion on the record, but she knows it was her suggestion that day in the studio to sing for them that made it what it became. Let it go. Let it go. But letting go isn’t so easy when she recalls returning to Brazil and embarking on a European tour which sees her husband betray her by having an affair with the singer known as Miúcha.
Astrud isn’t usually one for regrets, but with no money, broken and desperate, returning to the US where she naively takes up residence on a tour with her former tormentor, Stan Getz, was clearly a mistake. She has become terrified of the stage, totally disillusioned with the business, and feels completely alone in a world of men determined to sexualise her and take advantage of her financially. But she needs a job, and she isn’t going to let her children go without, so it makes sense to capitalise on the popularity she is afforded on the back of the hit single.
Over the following years, she manages to carve out a respectable musical career for herself, recording eight solo albums between 1965 and 1971. Briefly, she fantasises about the direction her life may have taken had she had insight into publishing and recording rights and contracts. But what good is fantasy? If she wallows in the dreams of what was rightfully hers, the bitterness might just eat her up, and that isn’t an emotion she should allow to define her.
Instead, in these final days of her life, she chooses to recall the good times, working with brilliant men such as Quincy Jones and Walter Wanderley, her idol Chet Baker, with whom she recorded in 1977, and the effervescent George Michael, who coaxed her out of ‘retirement’ to accompany him on a recording for an AIDS charity album in the 1980s.
It has been a rich life in many respects, but a lonely one; ultimately rejected by men she loved, the industry, and even her beloved Brazil, the nation whose press treated her so badly after her success abroad, which was regarded jealously at the time. She had gone back to visit Brazil, not as a performer but as a tourist, incognito. But all that is past.
Now, tired but content in her chosen solitude, Astrud finds peace in the knowledge that her work, whether perceived as good, bad, or indifferent, speaks for itself. A legacy of love, with the music the ultimate victor, of summer warmth that will live on, even though her autumn has finally come.
Volunteer SpotlightDavid Ogilvie
Pamela Newling talks with theEditor of FineMusicMagazineWhat influenced you to volunteer with Fine Music and when did it start?
In 2002, I started listening to ABC Classic and a few local music stations. After hearing a 2MBS station announcement calling for volunteers, I rang up and was invited to attend an interview. After some technical instruction from my ‘tutor’ Ron Walledge, I was let loose on the airwaves for my maiden broadcast, a six-hour marathon from midnight to 6am. Then followed shorter broadcasts, some of which I could program myself. My first was an hour of César Franck, but I was later rebuked for overlong introductions by the Chair of the Programming Committee, a typical mistake of novice presenters who like the sound of their own voices too much!
Where does your love of music come from?
Apart from my mother’s collection of scratchy 78rpm classical recordings, proper introduction to serious music came when I joined the Classical Music Society at school at the age of 17. Our history master used to take groups to hear the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, which was blessed with excellent conductors like Charles Groves and Constantin Silvestri. Later at Uni, I remember being very impressed by my first opera: the Welsh National Opera’s production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. It remains to this day my favourite – I must have seen over a dozen productions over the years.
What are your music favourites?
Well… first and foremost, dear Mozart, of course. My first classical LP was Giulini conducting Symphonies 40 and 41, swiftly followed by the Requiem Mass and The Magic Flute. I also love Dvorak symphonies, Vivaldi concerti, and Italian opera, although my German Bach-loving ex-partner, whose grandmother it was rumoured was an illegitimate daughter of Richard Wagner, would scoff, cheerfully denouncing all Italian composers as ‘cooks’! I also like modernists such as Philip Glass and Michael Nyman.
What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the station?
Put quite simply: the friendship, camaraderie, and dedication of the volunteers and the love of classical music that we all share. I also enjoy editing Fine Music Magazine immensely.
Name some musical moments or performances that will stay forever in your memory?
I was introduced to opera by a scene in Bergman’s film Hour of the Wolf, a beautiful moment of pure fantasy where guests in a castle watch entranced as a tiny singer performs a scene from Die Zauberflöte in a miniature theatre. It was magical! It also influenced me to look more closely at how effectively music can be used in film. Later on, when I lived in London, I was fortunate to be able to see the crème de la crème of operatic talent of the period at Covent Garden: Pavarotti, Domingo, Te Kanawa, Raimondi, Sutherland, to name but a few.
Do you have time for other interests outside Fine Music?
Bushwalking and sailing, the latter was one of the reasons that influenced my move to Australia. I often look at Sydney Harbour with a contented smile, remembering the times I sailed my own boat under the Harbour Bridge!

Fritz Hart: Complete music for violin and piano, Volume 1
Susan Collins, violin; Stephanie McCallum, piano Toccata Classics TOCC0470Released in late 2019, this important disc has only just made it to 2MBS Fine Music. Fritz Hart was head of the Albert Street, later the Melba, Conservatorium in Melbourne from 1913 to 1939, having arrived in Australia some years earlier to conduct for J.C. Williamson’s theatre company. Hart was never a professional composer but still managed to produce a huge volume of music including 23 operas and the three violin sonatas that are the main works on this recording from violinist Susan Collins and pianist Stephanie McCallum. The sonatas display Hart’s
To Listen, To Sing: Ngarra-Burria: First Peoples composers Ensemble Offspring
Ngarra-Burria (‘To Listen, To Sing’) is a program instigated by Dharug composer and teacher Christopher Sainsbury in 2016 to encourage and enable indigenous composers to ‘create notated compositions and industry connections’. The program, which won a Classical: Next Innovation Award in Germany in 2022, has seen numerous Indigenous composers work with Ensemble Offspring to create chamber music for performance and recording. Twelve composers are represented on this release, including Brenda Gifford, Nardi Simpson and Eric Avery, recipients of First Nations composer residencies with the Ensemble. The majority of the 16 compositions are for a quartet of flute, clarinet, vibraphone and cello, allowing
affinity with the impressionism of Debussy and his fascination with his Irish Celtic roots. This is a beautiful recording that brings out the gently moody nature of the pieces which sound more like they have come from England than Australia where they were mostly written, although the last sonata dates from Hart’s career in Hawaii. Hart’s impact on Australia is probably more evident from the long list of composers who studied with him in Melbourne. It is wonderful to hear more of his music through such a fine recording.
– James Nightingalefor a wide range of moods to be expressed: Eric Avery’s Gliding floats on the interplay between flute and bass clarinet, with vibraphone and cello providing direction and momentum. In Nardi Simpson’s Burruguu (Time of Creation), a more solemn work, sustained notes in the cello provide the fertile ground out of which the flute creates tendrils of burgeoning life. Some compositions substitute violin and double bass for flute and cello: in Aaron Wyatt’s Cirrus, the contrast and space between violin and double bass suggests the skyscape glimpsed from the city below. Each composition offers much to discover and appreciate: you can hear some of them on New Horizons on Sunday 9 July at 9:30pm.
– Paul CookeErmanno Wolf-Ferrari is a composer whose work is not well known to audiences today but with recordings of his later instrumental works beginning to emerge, such as this one from the Oviedo Filharmonia, maybe that will change. Wolf-Ferrari spent most of his career as a composer of operas, of which his bestknown work is Susanna’s Secret. Late in his career, he wrote several instrumental works, four of which are presented in this recording. The title track, Suite Veneziana, reflects Wolf-Ferrari’s
Light Dance
The arrival of a new trio recording such as this often evokes the feeling of greeting an old friend. The familiar reward of plenty of melody and harmony (hugs and kisses) is most welcome. It is explored with a further depth of listening (deep conversation) and its roots are revealed, encompassing both classical and jazz traditions, that sit comfortably with the musical sensibilities of the three musicians. Through-composed elements are minimal, but so intuitive are the trio’s dialogues from an eight-year history of performing together, that even when locked into melodic and rhythmic vamps, a sense of adventure still prevails. Pianist Casper Tromp describes his sound as brimming with classically inspired pieces with
affection for the city, its people, and churches. The Triptych, op 19, is like a set of three pictures in its simplicity and elegance, while the Divertimento is humorous and light-hearted, as its title implies. Wolf-Ferrari’s music eschews any attempt to be modern or academic; instead, it wears its melodies with pride and hides any complexities with elegance. I found this recording to be endearing and well worth the time to listen to.
– James Nightingaleenergetic solos and themes. He achieves this admirably, aided by Maximilian Aludca (double bass) and Cameron Reid (drums). On my favourite track, Waves, gentle chords unfurl into soulful rhythms, providing a platform for the trio to improvise and interact before unfolding an attractive melody. Tromp delves into a space of quiet beauty with the pace accelerating halfway, offering hope and grace while utilising Alduca’s bass underpinnings, and Reid’s light touch on drums that comes to the fore. This trio’s soundscapes explore far and wide and it is hard to beat this glorious musical journey filled with reflection, melancholy and outpouring of romance.

Penelope is besieged by suitors during the ten years that she waits for the return of her husband, Ulysses, King of Ithaca. She is weaving a shroud for her father-in-law, Laertes, and promises that she will choose between her suitors when she has finished. Each night, she unpicks the day’s weaving. Ulysses returns disguised as a beggar. As Penelope watches from a hilltop overlooking the sea for the return of Ulysses’ ship, the beggar, claiming to be a Cretan king, tells her he has seen Ulysses alive. He offers to help Penelope defeat her suitors. The impatient suitors have arranged a wedding for Penelope in the palace hall. At the beggar’s suggestion, Penelope organises a competition to see who can draw Ulysses’ bow with the winner to be her new husband. No one succeeds until the beggar steps up and draws the bow with ease. He turns and shoots the suitors, then reveals his identity to an overjoyed Penelope.

King Ouf I roams his city, in disguise, searching for a suitable subject to execute as a birthday treat. Travelling incognito, Hérisson de Porc-Epic, an ambassador, his wife Aloès and his secretary, Tapioca, are accompanied by Laoula, the daughter of a neighbouring monarch. Their mission, of which Laoula is unaware, is to marry her to Ouf. Laoula and a poor pedlar, Lazuli, fall in love at first sight. Scolded for flirting, Lazuli insults the disguised king and thus becomes the desired candidate for execution. When Siroco, the king's astrologer, reveals that the stars predict that the king and the pedlar will die within 24 hours of each other, Lazuli is escorted with honours into the palace.
Lazuli soon grows bored with luxury and longs for Laoula. Ouf, still unaware of the disguises, imprisons Hérisson who was pretending to be Laoula’s husband. The lovers depart but Hérisson escapes and orders the pedlar to be shot. Gunfire is heard, Laoula is brought in but there is no sign of Lazuli. Ouf bemoans his impending death.
Ouf, desperate to produce an heir to the throne, plans to marry Laoula, even if he only has an hour to live. Lazuli, having escaped harm, reveals himself to Laoula and they plan a second elopement. However Ouf does not die within 24 hours and he declares that the astrologer's predictions must have been wrong. Lazuli appears and Ouf, glad to be alive, blesses his marriage to Laoula.

Count Almaviva, disguised as a servant Lindoro, serenades his love Rosina, the ward of Doctor Bartolo, who plans to marry her for her dowry. His barber Figaro suggests that Almaviva get into Bartolo’s house by disguising himself as a soldier. He fails in this attempt but returns as assistant to Basilio, the singingmaster. He shows Bartolo a letter supposedly to Almaviva from a mistress, which Bartolo thinks will inflame Rosina’s jealousy. She is upset but Almaviva reveals his true identity and his constancy and, with Figaro’s help, they elope before Bartolo discovers that he has been tricked.

During the War of Succession, the deposed Polish King Stanislaus has returned to Warsaw to regain the throne, leaving a French officer in Paris to impersonate him. Stanislaus rules for one day before being deposed again. Belfiore, impersonating the Polish King, is a guest in the home of Baron Kelbar who has betrothed his daughter, Giuletta, to the Brittany Treasurer, La Rocca, but she loves La Rocca's nephew, Edoardo. Baron Kelbar's niece, Marquesa del Poggio, loves Belfiore but he will not commit himself to her. Belfiore is concerned that the Marchesa will reveal his impersonation but, when she arrives, she pretends not to recognise him. La Rocca accepts the offer from the 'King' of marriage to a rich widow and agrees to give up Giuletta. Baron Kelbar is affronted and challenges La Rocca to a duel. Giuletta explains that her father's opposition to her marriage to Edoardo is because of his poverty. Belfiore immediately rules that La Rocca must give up one of his castles and give Edoardo a sum of money. La Rocca is not pleased but is seeking a way to avoid the duel with Baron Kelbar and does not wish to disobey the 'King'. The Marchesa tells Belfiore that it is her intention to marry the Count of Ivrea. She is still hoping that Belfiore will marry her and, when the Count arrives, Belfiore forbids the marriage 'for reasons of state'. A letter for Belfiore arrives from King Stanislaus announcing his safe arrival in Warsaw and releasing Belfiore from his task of impersonating him. The King has created him Marshall but, before revealing his disguise and his new title, Belfiore proclaims that Giuletta and Edoardo are to be married. The Baron consents to their marriage and Belfiore reads the real King's letter. He then expresses his love for the Marchesa and all ends happily with two forthcoming weddings.

a servant, who tells him that Sandrina is engaged to a nobleman. Nencio believes that Filippo has betrayed him by encouraging him to woo Sandrina despite having arranged for her to marry someone of higher standing. Then Nencio is approached by the supposed nobleman (again Vespina in disguise), claiming that Sandrina is engaged not to him but to a kitchenhand. Delighted that Filippo’s supposed plan for Sandrina to marry the nobleman has been apparently thwarted, Nencio agrees to witness the ‘replacement’ wedding as an act of revenge. This takes place, with Vespina in a new role as the notary/celebrant and Nanni as the supposed groom. After the ceremony, they drop their disguises and reveal themselves. Filippo and Nencio are initially furious, but everyone is soon reconciled and a double wedding, a real one this time, ensues.

Silver mine manager, Zwack, and Julie Fahnenschwinger had an affair resulting in the birth of a daughter, abandoned when Julie left the mountain village near the mine. Zwack has married, but is a philanderer. Currently he fancies Nelly who is in love with Martin, the foreman. Zwack has just sacked Martin who has now called the miners out on strike. To find out what is going on at the mine, Prince Roderich, the owner, poses as a volunteer worker. He befriends Martin, who confides
that he has discovered a new silver vein which he will not reveal until he receives 3,000 florins from the owner. A countess, travelling incognito, and claiming to be Julie’s cousin, arrives to visit Nelly, whom she knew as a child. When Martin visits Nelly, he is smitten by the countess but dares not speak to her, and asks his new friend (Prince Roderich in disguise) to speak on his behalf. Roderich also falls for Julie’s supposed cousin, unaware that she is really the Countess Fichtenau. Zwack’s wife, Elfriede, organises a party to support her husband’s political ambitions. Zwack comes to the conclusion that the countess is Julie and Nelly is her daughter and, therefore, his illegitimate daughter. This makes it impossible for him to continue his dalliance with her. The ensuing complications lead to Elfriede filing for divorce and Roderich paying the 3,000 florins to Martin. Two happy couples emerge from the mayhem: Prince Roderich and Countess Fichtenau (Julie) become engaged, and Martin is free to marry Nelly.
