Traditionally, Fine Music Magazine has focussed on the music, musicians, and composers of the core offerings of our radio station: Classical Music, Opera, Ballet and Jazz, but we live in rapidly changing times, and with those come changing demographics. Contrary to common misconception, nearly half* of our weekly audience is under the age of 40, and there have been further changes related to the introduction of digital (DAB+), podcasts, and streaming from our website all around the World. For many years now we have broadcast niche programs such as Stormy Monday (Blues), Contemporary Collective, Whirled Wide (World Music), Hosanna (Hymns and Sacred), Music that’s Band (Brass), Operetta in the Afternoon, New Horizons, Music of the Screen (Film), and Stage and Screen (Film and Musical Theatre). Remarkably, Fine Music Magazine has rarely acknowledged the existence of these programs, all the more surprising because many of them have large loyal audiences. We have therefore decided to widen the focus of the Magazine to bring these niche programs ‘into the fold’, so you can expect more articles on these genres in the coming months. As you may have gathered from the review we ran on Hamilton: The Musical last month, we also expect to review and write about some of the significant music events in the Sydney area, in addition to background information and human interest stories about the amazingly talented people who contribute to Fine Music Sydney’s musical output. It goes without saying that we value your input and feedback. Don’t hesitate to let us know what you think of the changes in the months to come by emailing me at the address below, tweeting the station, or engaging with us on Facebook. We look forward to hearing from you! david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com * Source: Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (2019). Community Radio National Listener Survey December 2019

A man of independent means Anne-Louise Luccarini looks at the real Albinoni 350 years ago, on the 8th of June 1781, before the arrival of the heat and the sirocco, Tomaso Albinoni was born in Venice. The newly completed votive church of Santa Maria della Salute rose pearly from the lagoon under a pure blue sky, and beyond the pink arcades of the Doge’s palace glinted the byzantine cupolas of San Marco. In that cavernous interior, Gabrieli trumpets once resounded. Venezia, a city of music: it was said that in every household there was someone singing or playing an instrument. Albinoni’s father was not a musician but a wealthy manufacturer of playing cards, in which lucrative art his three sons were trained. When Tomaso was taught music is not documented, but by 1694 he was a violinist, had composed an opera which was performed, and had dedicated his Opus 1, twelve sonate a tre, to that influential young patron of the arts, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. Tomaso’s younger brother was Page of Honour to the Cardinal’s mother, and careers were built on such dedications. Albinoni styled himself Veneto dilettante: under the rules of the musicians’ guild, his primary trade disqualified him from performing professionally, and dilettante moreover suggested independent means and elevated social position. Whether he knew it or not, he had a direct competitor in Alessandro Marcello, one year older, a patrician and a genuine dilettante, who, like Albinoni, contributed unaware to J.S. Bach’s fugues. Vivaldi was yet to come.
agefotostock / Alamy Stock Photo
The steady stream of operas eventually slackened, with the last two performed in 1734 and 1741. In 1743, Albinoni applied for the position of choirmaster and singing teacher at the Ospedale per i Derelitti, but he was 72, in failing health, and so Nicola Porpora got the job.
Operas flowed steadily from Albinoni’s pen, at least two a year. He left the printing business with his father’s blessing, and married a singer named Margherita Raimondi in 1705. When Albinoni senior died in 1709, his will provided that the two younger brothers were to run the business, dividing the income equally between all three sons. This scheme came to an unfortunate end in 1721: one brother died, the business collapsing with debts to pay, and then Margherita died, leaving five children. Albinoni now had to support himself and his family.
Relatively little of Albinoni’s enormous output was published, and unearthing his manuscripts has been a labour of musicological love. We detect him in certain fugues of J.S. Bach, who often used Albinoni’s bass-lines as harmony exercises for his pupils. Albinoni revised the sonata, created innovative concertos with contrasting movements, and was a trailblazer in the use of the oboe, a new instrument at the time in Italy. He is now seen as the stylistic link between Corelli, Domenico Scarlatti and Vivaldi. His father deserves our respect for his foresight – his name, by the way, was Antonio, like another famous merchant of Venice.
The dedication of twelve concertos to the Prince Elector of Bavaria resulted in an invitation to Munich to organise all the music for the Elector’s wedding celebrations (but that’s another story). A reviewer commented enigmatically that at least one could be sure this was the real Albinoni and not the impostor who had been appearing all over Germany, which indicates his fame, if nothing else.

In Conversation with Cyrus Meher-Homji OAM Mona Omar talks to the Senior Vice President at Universal Music Australia about his 30-year involvement with the Sydney International Piano Competition. Held every four years, the Sydney International Piano Competition (The Sydney) has always been one of the most anticipated events on the cultural calendar. Much to the disappointment of all, the 2020 competition was cancelled due to the global pandemic. The Sydney returns this July (1-18) in an online format under the aegis of Piers Lane AO, its indefatigable Artistic Director. How did you become involved with The Sydney? I attended my first event in 1988 and have been a devotee ever since. My professional involvement with the Competition began in 1992. A meeting was held shortly after the 1992 event at one of the studios of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) with the intention of releasing a recording from winner Xiang-Dong Kong. Present were representatives of the Competition: a record label, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, ABC Classic FM, and me. After a brief listening session, this idea was abandoned. I suggested an alternative path – treating the Competition as a festival representing the wealth of music heard, but at the time it too didn’t go anywhere.
The selections are always based
on memorable music-making, not favouritism or the stage a finalist reached in the event.
Having attended all rounds of the 1992 event, I knew that within the compass of the earlier rounds of the Competition were enough outstanding performances from which to create souvenir recordings. I had agreement from the Competition and the ABC, however we didn’t have a record label, and so a new label called Soundscapes was born to be the carrier for these recordings. Fortunately, although they were launched without much fanfare, they received critical acclaim. Photos bt Lisa Jamison Photos: 2021 Sydney International Online Piano Competition

The pre-recorded, high-definition broadcast of competitor recitals will be post-edited into 28 sessions and aired ‘on demand’ from 1 – 18 July. No one, bar the jury, will know who progresses through to the Semis and Finals until the broadcast dates, maintaining the thrill for competitors and audiences alike.
The recordings are titled Sydney International Piano Competition Selected Solo Highlights. How do you select which finalists appear on the disc set?
What’s next for you?
We have used the same principles for every record from 1992 until 2016 (excluding 2012) – piano playing worthy of representation on record. The selections are always based on memorable music-making, not favouritism or the stage a finalist reached in the event.
I’m currently working on the June release of Virtuoso – Pianists of the Sydney International Piano Competition (1992-2016), a limited-edition boxset I curated to showcase the performances of our pianists over the past two decades. The album illustrates what a monumental event the Competition is, and why it is of such relevance to our cultural calendar. I hope it brings back memories for those who were there and entertains those unfamiliar with the performers!
What can we expect from The Sydney this year? Although the international travel ban made it impossible to stage a traditional competition, times have changed, and access is easier. Online facilities enable one to click through to performances. Our online transformation will now see all 32 competitors record in their home countries, with each performer being given the scope to navigate how they can compete safely for the winner’s crown. Working closely with each competitor, we’ve enabled venues, pianos, recording equipment and technicians to ensure performance submissions for all three competition rounds were captured in advance and at their best for the judges.

Beautiful, wild music Paul Cooke discovers Weber’s Der Freischütz
The Roman historian Tacitus, writing in the year 98, characterised the German people as living in “a land of bristling forests and unhealthy marshes... With [Germany’s] wild scenery and harsh climate it is pleasant neither to live in nor look upon”.
Der Freischütz was completed in 1821 and was first performed at the Schauspielhaus Berlin on 18 June. Amongst those in the audience were the 12-year-old Felix Mendelssohn, and author and composer E.T.A. Hoffmann, who commented on the “immortal breath of life which Weber has blown into the wonderful characters”. The opera was an overnight success; by 1822 it had been performed in 22 German theatres and by 1830 heard in nine languages. The opera’s first performance in Sydney was at the newly opened Royal Victoria Theatre in Pitt Street on 15 September 1838. The Sydney Herald thought it had been “produced in a very creditable manner” and remarked upon the “beautiful, wild music of Weber ... some of the most extraordinary music ever composed”.
Fast forward the better part of two millennia and that unflattering description has been transmogrified into an idealised aspect of German national consciousness, as seen in the art of Caspar David Friedrich; in the Gespensterbuch, the ghost stories collected by Johann August Apel and Friedrich Laun in the 1800s; and in the music of Carl Maria von Weber. The primeval forests are portrayed as vast, mysterious, even incomprehensible, and the people who live there are revered, although often overshadowed by their surroundings.
For those new to Der Freischütz, the plot can be summarised as follows: Max, assistant forester, wants to win the hand of Agathe, attractive daughter of the chief forester, and stumbles into making a pact with the devil to ensure that this happens. What is special and ground-breaking about this opera is the way these characters move within a vast natural and supernatural landscape and how this is communicated musically. By way of example, the hunters are represented by a horn quartet, and the forces of demonic darkness by lower register strings, clarinets and bassoons, eliciting this praise from Theodor Adorno: “Low clarinets and pizzicato basses create a blacker blend of sound than Beethoven could ever have dared conceive”. The opera was highly regarded by Berlioz and discussed by him in his Treatise on Instrumentation, and was a major influence on Wagner, who remarked: “A more German composer than you has never lived”. Tell that to the Romans!
As a 14-year-old in 1800, Weber had written an opera, Das Waldmädchen (The Forest Maiden), reworked as Silvana ten years later, at which time he also came across a version of the Der Freischütz story in the Gespensterbuch. He didn’t act upon his discovery straightaway, instead pursuing an operatic conducting career in Prague and then Dresden, but he was aware that the aura of Rossini (probably the most popular composer alive at the time) and Italian opera loomed large, and that few of his compatriots’ operas were truly German in spirit. Weber was Classically trained – he was related by marriage to Mozart and encouraged to follow in his footsteps – but his temperament and his interest in the mystic and the supernatural led him, with first Der Freischütz, then Euryanthe and Oberon, to become one of the founders of the Romantic movement in music.

Celebrating Chick Corea Robert Vale looks back on a sadly departed jazz giant
In February of this year, the passing was announced of American pianist Chick Corea following a sixty-year career in which he embraced music in its many forms. While primarily a jazz composer and performer, Corea also played the classics, sometimes as a soloist but also in duets and even with symphony orchestras. On Sunday 13 June at 3pm, to mark Corea’s 80th birthday, Robert Vale will be celebrating Chick Corea in Sunday Special, delving into Corea’s career and sometimes bringing you the unexpected.
Flamenco influences can be found in the recordings of his Spanish Heart Band with ensembles which included dance, voice and guitarists such as Jean Luc Ponty and Paco de Lucia. Selections from his 1976 recording My Spanish Heart and Antidote from 2019 will be played during the program. As a child, Corea was raised in a household where the music was jazz. His father, a professional trumpeter, encouraged young Corea to experiment, and as an eight-year-old, to take formal piano lessons. Corea later recalled that he could hear jazz in the music of Bartok and Stravinsky.
How Corea thought about music was in itself an interesting subject. He had little interest in categorising it and happily crossed borders. His improbable partnership with bluegrass-banjo player Bela Fleck, who will be featured on the program, is a case in point.
This license to freedom is exemplified by his collection of Children’s Songs which emerged in the 1970s. Originally written for solo piano these twenty songs portray the joy and freedom of a young child.
Corea’s long-time attachment to Spanish music might best be explained through his association with Miles Davis and being so enamoured with the Davis recording Sketches of Spain and in particular with the Gil Evans arrangement of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. This was to be the music which inspired one of Corea’s most often played compositions, Spain. The classic recording of Corea with singer Bobby McFerrin will be featured in the Sunday Special program.
Throughout his career Corea included classical performances with chamber groups and symphony orchestras. Sunday Special will include Corea with, separately, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Also included are solo performances from Corea of selected piano preludes of Scriabin and Chopin. Perhaps remarkably Corea had another mainstream interest in the form of jazz/rock fusion, played in both acoustic and electric formats. Born out of his membership of the Miles Davis fusion band of 1968 Corea formed his own fusion group a few years later and named it Return to Forever. It continued to perform for the following forty years. Join Robert Vale at 3pm Sunday 13 June when Sunday Special will celebrate Chick Corea.

When Winter Comes Nicky Gluch meditates on the season’s different guises
Shivering, frozen mid the frosty snow in biting, stinging winds; running to and fro to stamp one’s icy feet, teeth chattering in the bitter chill… This is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights.
Arnold Bax’s Winter Legends for piano and orchestra provides a naturalistic interpretation of the season. Bax described the work as a ‘northern nature piece full of sea and pine forest’ with the legends those of Norse mythology. This is the winter of Narnia and Game of Thrones, as inspiring today as it was in Bax’s time. To those of us Down Under, it seems pure fiction, whereas to those above the equator it is ‘the North’, mythologised and romanticised, an idea more than a place. Bax explained that the work had no specific program, but was instead designed to capture a feeling. The dedication to pianist Harriet Cohen, Bax’s lover and muse, suggests he envisaged a certain woman with whom he would ride the conceptual sleigh.
(Winter, from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) What is winter in a sunburnt country? It is summer that threatens, feet running lest they burn, searing heat and winds that fan flames … with Autumn comes reprieve, Winter calm. We fear it not. We do not know what it means to be so cold that we cannot get warm, to watch water turn to ice, animals retreating, food disappearing, to wait out, endure, and hope for Spring. We do not know but we can experience, through art, literature, and, of course, through music.
The third interpretation of winter is the metaphoric, and for that Paul has chosen Mieczysław Weinberg’s Symphony no 21. In characterising life’s journey, winter is often taken to represent old age; in frozen lands, however, it can more ominously represent the threat of untimely death. Weinberg’s Symphony is dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. That would be symbolism enough, for it is World War II which inspired Narnia’s winter. The allusion becomes deeper, however, when it is known that Weinberg borrowed a violin melody from his score for Our Father, which tells the story of a Jewish mother and child who tried to escape consignment to the ghetto by wandering the wintry streets.
In June, Fine Music will take listeners on a journey into Winter. Programmer Paul Cooke approaches the concept in three different ways. The temporal interpretation is represented by Fanny Mendelssohn’s Das Jahr, a cycle of pieces for keyboard depicting the months of the year. Mendelssohn wrote the work for her husband, Wilhelm Hensel, as a Christmas gift in 1841. Together, they turned the score into a work of art, selecting an excerpt from German poetry to serve as an epigram for each month, with Hensel embellishing each movement with a figure drawing in Romantic style. By example, the epigram for December is taken from the chorale Vom Himmel hoch with an angel depicted carrying a baby. With Winter comes the joy of Christmas.
To freeze. We know it rarely in a sunburnt country, but through Weinberg we experience the pain. To see pine trees covered in snow is unimaginable in a land of gums, but through Bax we experience their beauty. And the joy of a white Christmas, a charming idea no more, becomes tangible through Mendelssohn: that is the delight that music brings! Sunday Special: Winter 3pm 27 June

Volunteer Spotlight Brian Drummond
Pamela Newling talks to Brian about the journey to Fine Music Sydney On retirement from teaching in 2010, Brian thought it time to get involved in actively supporting Fine Music Sydney, perhaps by helping with magazine delivery. Sue Nicholas instead suggested he try programming, which led to enjoyable weekly trips to the Fine Music library, chatting with other programmers, wallowing in the marvellous CD collection and devising all manner of programs. After a few years, Ross Hayes started to ask about presenting. Brian says: “I resisted, but Ross persisted! So began a rather nerve-wracking learning curve into the world of hi-tech broadcasting!”
I can’t imagine life without fine
music, and it’s a privilege to be able
to assist in making it available to the people of Sydney.
At that time Brian and his wife had decided on a tree change to a small property in the Hunter Valley, where his wife could keep her horses without driving long distances to visit them. Brian says: “There are now long distances that need to be covered between home and St Leonards, but a good book and a quiet carriage help the journey pass relatively quickly.” Concerts that Brian says remain etched in his memory include a youth concert in the Melbourne Town Hall while still at school. The concert included works previously unknown to Brian: Fauré’s Pavane, Poulenc’s Organ concerto, and the final item, Saint-Saens’ Organ symphony, which he says absolutely blew him away!
Some 15 years later, Brian attended a hastilyorganised memorial concert in the chapel of Queens’ College Cambridge. There was no charge, and the performers were volunteers honouring the death of a young teacher. “The concert was directed by a young but brilliant Richard Hickox”, Brian continues, “I recall that the very walls of the chapel seemed to be singing. What a shock it was in 2008 to hear that Richard Hickox himself had passed away well before his time, while working in Sydney as the Musical Director of the Australian Opera.” Brian says: “I can’t imagine life without fine music, and it’s a privilege to be able to assist in making it available to the people of Sydney.”

What makes jazz great? The question came to mind with the 10th anniversary UNESCO International Jazz Day on 30 April. The UNESCO Director-General explained: “UNESCO created International Jazz Day to share the values of a deeply meaningful musical genre. Today we need jazz more than ever. We need its values, based on human dignity and the fight against racism and all forms of oppression. It is so much more than music; jazz is the kind of bridge builder we need in the world today.”
directing the interplay prescribed by an absent composer, but the musicians themselves listening and appreciating the musicality of the others in the ensemble. It is this very awareness of others and appreciating their perspective that gives rise to great jazz that transcends ethnic and racial boundaries, where musicians can share a jam regardless of colour or creed. The Fine Jazz on Fine Music Sydney embraces old and new, simple and challenging rhythms, traditional and modern, classic and cool. Our presenters each have a preferred style, and they have their favourite albums. In this series, we will delve into those favourites, the jazz that is great.
One of the key aspects of the jazz is improvisation. What makes jazz a vehicle for such lofty aspirations is that the improvisation relies on musicians sensing and responding to the underlying patterns. It is not the conductor

Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert Köln, Germany 1975 ECM Nominated by Keith Pettigrew, - Emergent Jazz, Saturdays at 7:00pm Sometimes music emerges polished and technically excellent, from well-rehearsed musicians with fine, tuned instruments. What happens when a musician is forced to work with an inadequate instrument, and the rehearsals only count for a thoroughness in understanding musical inter-relationships? Keith Jarrett as a 30-year-old pianist, was invited to play at the Köln Opera House by a 17-year-old German entrepreneur. However, the wrong piano had been delivered. It had worn felts, sticking black notes, out-oftune white notes, pedals not working, and was too small to fill the auditorium with sound. It was retuned, but that was all. Jarrett was going to walk away but relented to the pleading of a rain-soaked young girl.
Jacques Loussier - The Best of Play Bach
He returned to the stage and improvised. Whatever was contemplated was abandoned. He avoided the tinny high register, focussed on the middle tones providing a warm soothing ambience, used heavy repetitive bass riffs to give weight and resonance, and pounded the keys to get enough sound. What you hear is the man versus the machine, the musician coaxing the piano, the skill of improvising and magic of instrument and acoustics. It was, and still is, electrifying.
Digitally Recorded London December 1984 Phillips Nominated by Frank Presley – The New Jazz Standard, Thursdays at 7:00pm Improvisation was one of J.S. Bach’s trademarks, with pupils and biographers recognising his astonishing skills. We all improvise as we speak because we have learned the vocabulary, the syntax and the grammar, and we practice constantly. For Bach and most musicians of his time, improvisation was in their earliest musical training, along with instrument tuning and maintenance, technique, reading music, composing, and performing in ensembles. Bach’s composition and annotations expect improvisation.
In cognitive psychology, social psychology, and strategic planning, The Köln Concert is seen as a hallmark of brilliance, of adapting to poor circumstances, or filtering out the impossible and focussing on opportunity, of “thinking outside the box, because the box is full of holes.”
Jacques Loussier was born in 1934 and started piano at the age of ten. In a competition while studying at the Paris Conservatoire National Musique at 16 years, he was playing a prelude by Bach, and when his memory failed, he adopted the norm assumed by Bach, and improvised.
It was my first brush with jazz, and I was transfixed. The vinyl was bought and ripped to reel-to-reel so I could listen on the makeshift hi-fi in my car! The CD was bought and consumed. It still is the gold standard of improvisation.
The title of this album with Vincent Charbonnier on bass and Andre Arpino on drums suggests it is a compilation of prior recordings gathered as a ‘Best Of’. It is actually Loussier re-documenting earlier triumphs with his original Play Bach of the 1960s. Taking nothing away from the original recordings, these recordings sound richer, with added clarity to the bass and drums but with a relaxed approach like Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard. The album was released to correspond with Loussier’s 70th birthday. Frank fondly recalls his father standing him on a tea chest bass as a 4-year-old strumming away to the original 1960’s Play Bach. But when these new interpretations emerged, the sound seemed funkier, a reflection of the 1980s, punctuated with passages of swing that still send shivers up his spine. In one of his tours to Australia, a charming Loussier happily signed Frank’s record after the performance.

CD REVIEWS David Matthews: A Vision of the Sea
BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Jac van Steen Signum Classics SIGCD647 The modern symphonist is often starved of opportunities to put their orchestral music in front of an audience, which makes this recording of works by the English composer David Matthews from the BBC Philharmonic such a special CD. Matthews’ music displays the composer’s love for the orchestra and his knowledge of its craft. Matthews is known for having been an assistant to Benjamin Britten at Aldeburgh in the 1960s and has a connection to Australia through being mentored by Peter Sculthorpe around the same time. There are four works on
the disc, which date from 1995 to 2014, including Matthews’ Symphony no 8. The title work, A Vision of the Sea, is inspired by the sights and sounds of the water from the composer’s residence near the port of Deal. The recording demonstrates Matthews’ mastery of orchestral colour and form, the most impressive works for this listener being Toward Sunrise and the Symphony no 8. It’s a beautiful CD of symphonic music that shows the modern orchestra at its most compelling as a storyteller. - James Nightingale
Moonlight Reflections Stacey Alleaume; Amir Farid Move Records MCD 613
Stacey Alleaume is an AustralianMauritian soprano who is a former winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship and is currently singing with Opera Australia. Her accompanist is Iranian-Australian Amir Fahid. This release features music from ten composers in three languages, mostly from the late-Romantic period and including both well-known pieces and others that perhaps deserve to be. Of particular interest are compositions by Cécile Chaminade and Amy Beach. Chaminade’s piano music hasn’t been neglected but her songs, although championed at the time by FrenchCanadian Emma Albani and later by
18
Joan Sutherland, have been harder to come by: L’été is an exuberant opening to this recital. Beach is represented by Chanson d’amour and Three Browning Songs. The former, written when Beach was 21, includes a cello part here played by Zoe Knighton; it has been likened to a mini-aria, passionate and demanding of all performers. The second of the Three Browning Songs, featuring violinist Erica Kennedy, is also something of a tour-de-force, with many high notes and variations of dynamics and tempo creating a sense of drama. Beautiful music, gloriously performed. - Paul Cooke
CD REVIEWS Elephantasy: orchestral, operatic and chamber music of Eve Duncan Soloists; Chamber Orchestra conducted by Timothy Philips Move MD 3454
This new recording of music by Melbourne composer Eve Duncan features two major works for soloists and chamber orchestra, alongside a few shorter pieces for smaller forces. The latter includes Deep in Summer for trumpet and piano – a piece at first ruminative and then spirited – and Aer Turas, with flute, clarinet and cello tracing the currents and eddies of mountain air. Sydney Opera House is a two-movement piano concerto featuring Michael Kieran Harvey, with the piano representing architect Jørn Utzon. The questing first movement seems to suggest the evolution of Utzon’s innovative design; the second, with the piano at times in conflict with brass and percussion, the opprobrium that he faced.
The program is completed with the overture and vocal excerpts from Duncan’s opera, The Aspern Papers. Soloists are accompanied by almost pointillistic orchestration, inspired at one point by aristocratic Korean court music reflecting Venice’s role as entrepôt of the East. The dimensions of Palladio’s famous 16th century Venetian church are incorporated into the music: sometimes the building blocks of music are just that, building blocks, and it can be fascinating to see how they are assembled. - Paul Cooke
Project Masnavi Eishan Ensemble Earshift Music EAR050
Eishan Ensemble’s latest recording is a perfect example of successful jazz fusion. Inspired from the works of Sufism the music embellishes the group’s signature blend of Persian classical and Western jazz improvisation, allowing ample room for all of the players to express themselves. Band leader Hamed Sadeghi delivers a performance of considerable virtuosity on the tar and the band’s ever evolving line up is enhanced with the addition of Marcello Mao on piano accordion, bestowing yet another sonic dimension. Sadeghi’s compositions have the air of someone with a deep knowledge of Persian musical history committed to the past, present and future. All musicians colour

their inventive excursions with a Middle Eastern flavour, lending both mystery, definition and flair and on a favourite track, Shiraz, you can almost feel the sand under your toes or in your fingers drawing one into a magical place like in a dream. The ensemble’s individual musicianship and improvisational skills and the way everyone plays together, sure sound like jazz at most times, but Sadeghi’s compositions string together unique instrumental combinations and textures that can also sound quite different from jazz – especially on Lost In Flight. It is indeed a fascinating musical journey and highly recommended. - Barry O’Sullivan

Crazy about Maureen
Thanks to Maureen Meers for today’s show. It was a real treat to hear, among others, Mario Lanza, Edith Piaf and Patsy Cline. You probably know this but Crazy is the most popular juke box request in the States. A lovely mellow show for this very nice autumn day. Thanks so much! - Anonymous
You make me feel so young
Thanks to Dave Mac for his program from 12 to one on Sunday which he said his 90-year-old neighbour helped him with. I am 84 and remember these songs and records being in the family collection. All danceable and no 64-bar saxophone solos. Have them now as LPs or CDs. Irene Kaye sang Drum Boogie with Gene Krupa and Star Eyes with Charlie Spivak. I think her world and the world of Billy Holiday would have been miles apart however. The swing era had many fine female and male vocalists who did not get the same press as others. Most big bands had their small groups as well. So once again thanks to Dave Mac and his neighbour. Made me feel young again. - Paul
Use the Force
I particularly enjoyed this morning’s program (May 4) with Julie Simonds. It was, as always, a fascinating and varied mix, full of interest. Great to hear John Williams’ Star Wars tracks (music familiar to so many) and the music of Anthony Pitts with the Song Company. This is a programme with never a dull moment and always worth listening to. - George Palmer
Opera convert
I have never been an opera fan, and I have a layman’s understanding of this genre of music, however this evening around 5.30pm (Monday 10 May) I heard a piece of music sung by Teresa Berganza. The radio host translated the name of the song as The song of the gypsy woman. I was enthralled, sound up so loud, every part of my Being was moved... I had goosebumps. Can you please tell me the name of this magical piece of music? I think I may be an Opera convert. Thank you for moving me. My soul danced as she sang! I will begin to explore more opera because of this. - Emma Schapel Ed’s note: So glad you liked it, Emma! Known as the Gypsy Song, from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet, its actual title is Les tringles des sistres tintaient, which refers to the tinkling sound made by the vibrating bars of a sistrum, an ancient Egyptian percussion instrument.

DIDO: Catherine Bott, sop BELINDA: Emma Kirkby, sop AENEAS: John Mark Ainsley, ten SORCERESS: David Thomas, bass SPIRIT/MERCURY: Michael Chance, ct Academy of Ancient Music Ch & O/Christopher Hogwood. Decca 478 2826 52 Dido, the widowed queen of Carthage, encouraged by her lady-in-waiting Belinda, yields to her love for Aeneas, who has fled from Troy after its fall. A sorceress, plotting the downfall of Dido and Carthage, sends a spirit in the disguise of the god Mercury to remind Aeneas that his destiny is to rebuild Troy. Aeneas, believing the ‘god’, makes preparations for his ships to depart. Dido, concerned at the absence of Aeneas, confronts him when he appears. He admits that he has been preparing to leave for Troy but says that he will defy the gods and remain with Dido. Dido rejects him because of his falseness and orders him to leave. Aeneas leaves Carthage to build a new Troy. Griefstricken, Dido bids farewell to life. Mozart, W. Lo sposa deluso, ossua La rivalità di tre donne per un solo amante, K430. Bocconio Papparelli, a rich but stupid man, is betrothed to Eugenia, a Roman noblewoman. However, Eugenia, Bettina, Papparelli’s young niece, and Metilde, a singer and dancer, are all in love with Asdrubale. Metilde is a friend of Bettina and does not appear in this fragment of Act I.

German novelist Aschenbach is uninspired and decides that a holiday somewhere exotic may be just what he needs. He travels by boat to Venice, along with a group of youths and an elderly fop, wearing make-up, which repulses him. Once settled in a hotel at the Lido, he notices a young Polish boy, Tadzio, who is extremely beautiful, a figure from Ancient Greece. Later, on the beach, Aschenbach watches Tadzio as he plays with other boys. Tadzio wins the games and Aschebach determines to congratulate him on his victory, but when the opportunity arises, he cannot bring himself to speak. Aschenbach realises the truth that he wished to say ‘I love you’. Cholera strikes the city of Venice and the hotel clerk urges everyone to leave. Aschenbach follows Tadzio and his family to a café but the mother spots him, and moves between him and Tadzio. Aschenbach follows them sightseeing, increasingly caught up in his own emotions. Actors put on a comic performance which neither Aschenbach nor Tadzio find funny. Aschenbach wonders if Tadzio is looking to him for guidance. He dreams of Greek gods discussing reason and beauty versus chaos and ecstasy. At the beach, he watches Tadzio and his friends. He tells the barber to do what he will with his appearance. The barber dyes Aschenbach’s hair and applies make-up; he looks like the elderly fop on the boat. In Venice for one last time, Aschenbach follows the Polish family but this time Tadzio falls back and waits for Aschenbach who turns away when the boy looks directly at him. Once Tadzio has gone, Aschenbach, ill, is overcome with disillusion. The last guests are leaving the hotel, but there's time for another game on the beach for Tadzio. Aschenbach goes to watch. The game gets rough. Aschenbach tries to get up to help but is too weak. The other boy leaves Tadzio on the beach alone with Aschenbach. Tadzio beckons to him, but Aschenbach slumps in his chair. Tadzio walks into the sea. Aschenbach realises that he is attracted to the youth. An American overture, op 27 (1942). Paris 1867: The courtesan Zénobie is flirting with a handsome hussar. Her protector, the wealthy Antonin, finds out and leaves her, drowning his sorrows in champagne and falling asleep in a market barrow. Enter Ciboulette, a market gardener. A fortune teller says she will find love under a cabbage, a woman’s hair will turn white, and a message will be delivered in a tambourine. Back at the farm, Ciboulette discovers Antonin under the cabbages in her barrow. They are immediately attracted to each other. Zénobie arrives with the hussars. Furious, Ciboulette empties a sack of flour over Zénobie’s head. Antonin goes back to Zénobie, leaving Ciboulette broken-hearted. Ciboulette is introduced to an impresario who will make her a star. Antonin sees, but fails to recognise her masked and in Spanish costume. Having finally left Zénobie and lost Ciboulette, Antonin decides to end it all. He writes a farewell note which a servant places inside Ciboulette’s tambourine. When Ciboulette finds the note, the prophecy is fulfilled. Ciboulette and Antonin fall into each other’s arms. Weber, C.M. Der Freischütz, opera in three acts. Libretto by Johan Friedrich Kind. First performed Berlin, 18 June 1821. MAX: Rudolph Schock, ten AGATHE: Claire Watson, sop KUNO: Fritz Ollendorf, bass KASPAR: Gottlob Frick, bass OTTTOKAR: Claudio Nicolai, bar HERMIT: Kurt Bohme, bass German Opera Ch & O/Lovro von Matacic. RCA 74321 25287 2 2:19 Max, a forester, loves Agathe, and to succeed her father, Kuno, as head forester, a test of marksmanship skill is required. Max loses in the target practice. Kaspar persuades Max to cast seven magic bullets which will kill anything the shooter wants. Kaspar, whose soul is to be forfeited to the devil on the following day, hopes to substitute Max in his place. Max, fearing he will lose Agathe if he loses the contest, goes with Kaspar at midnight to the terrible Wolf's Glen to cast the magic bullets. Kaspar calls upon Samiel, the Black Huntsman, and when Max arrives, Samiel conjures up the shape of Agathe drowning herself, despairing at Max's lack of success, whereupon Max begins the casting of the bullets. Agathe dreams of ill omens. The hermit tells Agathe that her bridal wreath will protect her from danger. The bridesmaids arrive with the bridal wreath but when the box is opened, it is a funeral wreath. Max and Kaspar divide the bullets between them. Kaspar deliberately uses his last bullet leaving Max with the seventh, which is controlled by the Evil One. As Max fires at a target, Samiel guides the bullet so that it is aimed at Agathe. Her bridal wreath deflects the bullet, which strikes Kaspar. Samiel grasps him instead of Max, whereupon Kaspar expires with a curse upon his lips. Prince Ottokar, on learning about the magic bullets, pronounces the sentence of banishment on Max. The hermit pleads for Max saying that if he lives a faultless life, he should gain forgiveness and be permitted to marry Agathe after one year. The Prince agrees.

Leonora di Guienna (Eleanor of Aquitaine), wife of King Enrico (Henry II) finds he has a mistress,Rosmonda, who is lodged in a tower under the protection of the young page Arturo. Leonora realises that the page has fallen in love with this mysterious woman and suggests she will help him win her. Meanwhile Rosmonda, who has been alone in her tower for three months, is torn between love and remorse. Arturo brings news of her lover’s return, but adds that ‘concerns of the King’ keep him from her. However, permission has been given for an elderly knight to wait upon her, none other than Clifford, her father. From him Rosmonda learns her lover’s identity for the first time. Leonora appears and Clifford beseeches the Queen to take his daughter under her protection. Leonora agrees to do so, but Enrico, suspecting her malignant intentions, orders that she go back to Guienna (Aquitaine) the next day. Leonora, however, is determined not to be disposed of so easily. Clifford asks Rosmonda to leave with Arturo and they leave for the garden. Leonora finds her there but when Enrico and his troops appear, Leonora stabs Rosmonda. Enrico and Leonora accept that they both must accept Heaven’s blame. Era desso il figlio mio, from Lucrezia Borgia (1836). Iphigenia is chief priest at the temple of Artemis (or Diana) in Tauris, on the Black Sea coast in present-day Crimea (mistakenly identified as Thrace, or Tracia, by the librettist). The Taurians offer shipwrecked sailors to Artemis in sacrifice. As punishment for having killed his mother and her lover, Iphigenia’s brother Orestes has been ordered by Apollo to travel to Tauris to recover a statue of Artemis and return it to Athens. On arrival, he and his friend Pylades (a spoken role, not heard in this recording) are imprisoned and threatened with sacrificial death. Iphigenia is to preside over this ritual and fails to recognise Orestes as her brother, although they find each other attractive. Also shipwrecked in Tauris are Electra (their sister, and the wife of Pylades) and her servant Cofieta, both disguised as shepherdesses. Polydorus, son of King Priam of Troy, has travelled there as well, with a view to marrying the Taurian woman Dircea. However, he finds himself attracted to Iphigenia. For her part, Dircea becomes interested in Orestes. A further comic character, Mochila, completes the singing roles. Still without realising they are siblings, Iphigenia offers to give Orestes his freedom if he conveys a letter to Greece. Orestes volunteers Pylades to do this, wishing to stay and be sacrificed. The sacrifice is about to happen when the contents of the letter are revealed, enabling Iphigenia, Orestes and Electra to become aware of each other’s true identity. With the assistance of a flotilla of Greek ships, they flee Tauris carrying the statue of Artemis and leaving Polydorus and Dircea to continue their courtship. Soler, A. Piano sonata no 41 in E flat.
