E.T.A. Hoffmann Harbinger of Romanticism By Paul Cooke It’s common, especially in a sporting context, to speak of someone skilled in three fields as being a ‘triple threat’. Ernst Theodor Wilhelm (he later substituted Amadeus for Wilhelm) Hoffmann, whose death two centuries ago this month we are commemorating, could be regarded thus. I think it’s more appropriate, however, in terms of the range of talents he possessed, to think of him as a true Renaissance man. Hoffmann was born in Königsberg in 1776. His parents separated quite early in his life and he spent his childhood with his maternal grandmother. At the age of 16 he was sent to university to study law. This was against his wishes, but he came to enjoy the subject and ultimately ascended to the post of Kammergerichtsrat and sat in the Appeal Court. Another of his talents was as an artist, but his drawing skills saw him banished to the provinces (Plock, in New East Prussia) after caricatures he had made of the commanding officer of Posen fell into the wrong hands. In Plock he coped with the relative isolation by writing and composing, and then, in 1804, he secured a post in Warsaw. He regarded his time there as the happiest he had known: his work was exhausting but he still had time enough to compose in earnest, to buy instruments and sheet music for the musical society he set up, and to dream of a career in music. While in Warsaw his Symphony in E flat was premiered, on 3 August 1806, at a function which both celebrated the birthday of the King of Prussia and inaugurated a new concert hall. The Symphony owed much to Haydn in its formal design and orchestration and, while not a notable success, displayed a number of original features. Exactly ten years later his most successful opera, Undine, was premiered in Berlin and acclaimed, most notably by Carl Maria von Weber. In all, Hoffmann wrote nine operas and two masses, together with vocal, chamber, orchestral and piano compositions. He was, however, and probably knew himself to be, no Beethoven. Hoffmann’s time in Warsaw was not to last, as Napoleon captured the city in November 1806. A year of hand-tomouth existence in Berlin, also occupied by Napoleon, preceded his settling in Bamberg, where he began to write tales and reviews for the Leipzig newspaper Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung (AMZ): it is for these endeavours that he is best known.

As a reviewer his lasting legacy was in recognising Beethoven as a genius and as the apotheosis of Romanticism in ‘the most Romantic of all the arts’, noting how his ‘magnificent’ Fifth Symphony ‘carries the listener on and on in a continually ascending climax into the ghostly world of infinity!’ He was also an early champion of Bach and Gluck, and full of praise for Mozart, both the Requiem and Don Giovanni. The first tale Hoffman had published by AMZ was Ritter Gluck. Is the person who eventually identifies himself as the composer Gluck a ghost, or psychotic, or schizophrenic (or none of the above)? Hoffmann has been characterised as ‘Germany’s supreme storyteller’, and regarded as crucial to the development of horror, fantasy and crime genres. His creations, such as the ‘eccentric, wild and clever Kapellmeister’ Kreisler and the dancing doll Coppélia, were taken up by composers such as Schumann, Delibes and Offenbach, and are probably his most lasting legacy. A regular Jazz Salon: Hallelujah! by Virginia Ginnane

At Balmain’s monthly Jazz Salon, retail therapist Miranda Fair from the Shire and singer-by-night has a shaky start on stage. “Why are we doing this?” she asks Leita Hutchings, host of the monthly gig and FineJazz presenter of the Urban Jazz Lounge on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. Leita laughs in reply, “You said it was a good idea!” “Oh dear, I’ll make it up as I go,” shot back Miranda. So she did, and soon the risqué crooner has got us under her “thing, I mean skin”. Ol’ Blue Eyes would be blushing when he sang the Cole Porter classic back in 1954. Frank might not have held a candle to Miranda, but if he did she’d have grabbed it with both hands. As the celebrated arranger of I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Nelson Riddle once remarked, “Music for me is sex”. So bring it on. “It’s great not having to worry about the words!” she says looking so fab. Frocked in a crimson and gold velvetflocked mini with golden curls, gloves and sandals and legs up to here, Miranda’s imploring tones have us in the palm of her proverbial. “You’ve got me in the deepest part of me” she sings. Coming out of two years in the musical bat cave, the joy of spreading those wings again is infectious on a cold Thursday night in April. It was more like a party, and we were all there for the music, and maybe a little release. “There’s a dialogue that happens on these evenings, between the band members and their guest musicians and singers… it builds into something that’s magical; that’s when things get really exciting,” says Leita. The gig opens beneath the cathedral ceiling of the Uniting Church to a full house of devoted fans and their BYO evening picnic spread. There’s backing from the Repeat Offenders. Local pianist Jens Bagoien, looking sharp in a red cravat and tweed hat, warms the ivories in rhythm with Brian on drums, Les on double bass and Marcus on electric guitar. Beverly hugs the stage. She is but a sliver of mercury, crowned by a black and gold turban and donning a black sheath split to the knee. This serpentine Gloria Swanson was surely a hard act to follow for Ms Fair and the line-up. “Dance with me, make me sway,” sang Beverly, swaying with all the sultry balminess of a hot night in Cuba. Who needs Dean Martin? Although gee, he was a heartthrob. And just when global crises have made dreams a little hard to come by, Beverly makes it seem easy, evoking Satchmo with Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On. We love it all, clapping and tapping and often singing along with all the performers throughout the night, some turning up for the first time

06

and handing sheet music to the versatile band members who tune up to hit the right key. “The audience is always very appreciative,” says Norwegian-born Jens. Of the versatility required for a night of improvisation, he adds, “It’s inspiring but quite demanding to keep up with everyone!” But he’s only got himself to blame as he and two friends started the event about five years ago calling it ‘Toot Your Own Horn’. Although the name has changed, the philosophy to encourage performers to bring their own instrument on the night and just come and play or sing with the band is still trumpeted. A classically trained pianist, Jens loves the freedom of jazz. “You can never make a wrong note in jazz. It’s a very liberating form of music.”

Reckon! As we move from the New York jazz standards of the 50s and 60s, the evening draws to a close with a blast, as Despina belts out The House of the Rising Sun. LOUD. Hallelujah! How could you top that? Well, with a little audience participation as Leita offered the mike to takers to pump out just two words, Watermelon Man to the primal beat of the band playing Herbie Hancock’s standard from his debut album in 1962. My companion surprised himself with his vocal prowess. And me, I proved anyone can sing jazz! Well, up to a point! What a night. Soothing jazz in a house of the Lord. And heaven knows we need it. The Jazz Salon is held monthly at 344 Darling Street Balmain in Sydney. Join the Repeat Offenders on the third Thursdays, 16 June at 7pm.

Ross Edwards Five Sound Worlds By Mary Moran

Five little piano pieces (1976)

Having already profiled Felix Werder and Peggy Glanville-Hicks, we continue our series on Australia’s composers with the spotlight this month on the wellknown and much-performed Ross Edwards. Edwards has been prolific across so many genres that it is difficult to select just a few. We take a dive into five.

In the early seventies Edwards returned from the UK, disoriented and unable to compose. Perhaps this was a necessary struggle, not only for his eventual compositional progress but also for his broader legacy. While tutoring at Sydney University he met his future wife Helen, who has contributed significantly to his career. They moved to Pearl Beach in 1974 and to the soundscape of the surrounding natural world that would become a major influence on Edwards.

Five bird songs (2020) Windows and gardens became important during COVID and if you were lucky enough to experience bird life from yours then you may have taken the opportunity to connect vicariously with their sense of freedom. The observation that while people were locked down, birds were free to soar comes through strongly in Edward’s Five bird solos, as does the appreciation that the works are, by necessity, solos. Edwards wrote the suite of five movements for his friend, Amy Dickson, the Sydney-born, Londonbased classical saxophonist. Edwards uses birdsong as a springboard for his own melodic flight from a shutdown world.

1974 was also the year that the Nordoff Robbins (NR) music therapy approach was introduced into Australia. Edwards wrote these five pieces for Australia’s first NR therapist. Many a student of piano will recognise them as part of the Australian Music Examinations Board syllabus. Based on pentatonic scales from various countries, they are fun pieces that engage the student while requiring sound musical judgment. Five carols from Quem Quaeritis (1967)

Five symphonies (1991 – 2005)

Edwards has withdrawn most compositions from his student days. The Five Carols, developed as part of a nativity play when he was studying in Adelaide, are an exception and they are an important archive in helping us understand Edwards’ early influences.

Edwards composed his five symphonies between 1991 and 2005. The first symphony, Symphony da pacem domine, is a single, monolithic movement written in Edwards’ sacred style. At the time of writing this symphony, Edwards was profoundly affected both by the illness of Stuart Challender, conductor with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and by the Gulf War. A rhythmic pulse evolves and builds into an intensity that conveys the weight of grief and the desperate foreboding of war.

His early teachers included Richard Meale, Peter Sculthorpe, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Sandor Veress. Other early influences include his grandmother, who was a church organist, and his aunt, who had more of a traditional classical repertoire.

Symphonies Two through Five are multi-movement and they contrast Edwards’ two distinctive styles: the reflective, sacred, meditative style, with the more exuberant dance-like celebration.

Their collective influence can be heard in the Five Carols. Taking the traditional form of plainchant and weaving through Latin and Old English texts, Edwards creates a pure and beautiful sound structure for sopranos and altos.

Five chamber pieces (The Maninya series – 1986)

As Edwards approaches his eightieth birthday next year, we look forward to celebrating with more of his divine music.

In 1986 Edwards completed the Maninya series, five instrumental and vocal pieces, contrasting with his earlier sacred work. The fast dance-like chant makes use of drones, pentatonic and other gapped scales, and overlays fragments of meaningless text, to build a rhythmic buoyancy and corporeal energy. There are hints of African mbira music, Japanese, Indian and Indonesian scale, and Aboriginal chant and Sufic ritual-like repetition. The influence of the soundtapestry of the Australian natural world is more abstract than in other works but is still evident.

Two Bohemians and a Parisian Elaine Siversen looks at three composers from the Baroque and Classical eras

Mostly known today as a composer, Johann Kuhnau was also a novelist, translator, music theorist and lawyer, successfully combining these activities with his duties as Kantor at St Thomas’ Church and School in Leipzig. The immediate predecessor of Johann Sebastian Bach in the prestigious post, Kuhnau died 300 years ago on 5 June 1722. This remarkable man was born in a part of Bohemia that is now in present-day Saxony. As a child, he was sent to the Dresden court to study keyboard playing, composition, French and Italian, and later studied law at Leipzig University. During these years, he composed and performed and, at the age of 24, was appointed as organist of St Thomas’ Church. In 1701, aged 41 years, he became Thomaskantor and kept the position until his death 21 years later. Among his many pupils at Thomasschule were Johann Friedrich Fasch, Christoph Graupner and Johann David Heinichen.

A wide variety of musical devices were used by Kuhnau in these sonatas and in some other keyboard works. It is in the six sonatas that we find the most daring. Not only does he portray events such as the sounding of trumpets, and the hurling of David’s stone against Goliath, but he portrays the psychological states of some of the characters with changes of harmony and texture and uses imitations of operatic arias to portray emotions such as fear.

Kuhnau’s spare time was devoted to translating books from French and Italian into German, studying subjects such as mathematics, Hebrew and Greek, and writing novels and music treatises. Although he composed large-scale vocal works, including masses and operas, most of them are lost, but his keyboard works survive in four published collections. The best-known are the six Biblical sonatas, each based on a story from the Bible.

300 years ago, in the same month and in the same year that Kuhnau died, Jirí Antonin Benda was born into a family of notable Bohemian musicians on 30 June 1722. As a composer, he became the greatest of this long-lasting dynasty that has descendants performing as musicians today, thus surpassing the

10

longevity of the Bach family dynasty. After his family moved to a village near Potsdam in Prussia, Benda changed his name to the Germanic form, Georg Anton, and, at age 19 years, was appointed as second violinist in Frederick the Great’s chapel in Berlin. A year later, the King summoned Benda to his Potsdam court as a composer and arranger for the music of Georg’s older brother Franz, a composer and violinist. By this time, Franz and their brother, the violist and violinist Johann Georg, had been employed for several years at the court of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia before he became King. Both remained in Berlin for the rest of their lives, but Georg moved after six years to take up the more prestigious post of Kapellmeister for the Duke of Gotha. He resigned his post at Gotha 22 years later, travelled for a while and then settled in a tiny hamlet in Saxe-Gotha-Altenberg, retiring from permanent employment. The compositions of Georg Benda included sinfonias, keyboard sonatas and concertos, violin sonatas and concertos as well as trio sonatas, flute sonatas and music for masonic rituals, but most were sacred music. He also wrote ten operas and several melodramas. It is generally acknowledged that his development of the German melodrama influenced Mozart. Benda had great success with this form of musical theatre and Ariadne auf Naxos of 1775 is considered to be his best work. It received enthusiastic praise in Germany and later through the whole of Europe. Critics noted its ‘originality, sweetness and ingenious execution’.

The death of the organist and composer Louis-Claude Daquin occurred in Paris on 15 June 1772, 250 years ago. He was a musical prodigy who performed at the court of Louis XIV at the age of six, conducted his own choral work, Beatus vir, at the age of eight, and became the organist, at age 12, of Saint-Chapelle, the royal chapel in Paris. He was reputed to be a dazzling performer at the keyboard and held various posts as organist in several Paris churches including that of titular organist of Notre Dame. Crowds flocked to hear Daquin play and he was known for the ‘unfaltering precision and evenness’ of his playing of both harpsichord and organ. Most of his surviving compositions are for these instruments, the most famous and most recorded being his organ Noëls. Herbert Howells The Composer who Nearly Wasn’t by Michael Morton-Evans The result of all this was that Howells turned his attention to choral music. Earlier, he’d become an articled pupil of the organist of Gloucester Cathedral, Sir Herbert Brewer, along with the likes of Ivor Novello and Ivor Gurney. All three of them were brilliant enough to gain scholarships to the Royal College and it was that early training that brought Howells back to the church. Tragedy struck in 1935 when his son Michael died at the age of nine and Howells was devastated. He stopped composing for nearly two years, until he wrote his Fantasia for cello and orchestra, the score of which then lay forgotten in the Bodleian Library in Oxford for 45 years until rescued by the British cellist Gillian Matthews in 1982.

The Howells family was very poor, and young Herbert, when he came into the world in 1892, was a sickly child. By the time he was 24 the doctors had given him no more than six months to live, assuming that there was no way they could cure the cancer, but in 1916 a new experimental radium treatment was being tested and proved in Howell’s case to be a success. The cancer and its subsequent treatments also served as somewhat of a blessing in disguise, for it kept Howells away from the carnage of World War I and he went on to live to the ripe old age of 91. The name is synonymous with some of the greatest liturgical music in Britain throughout the 20th century, but for some reason the orchestral side of his output, despite being just as good, somehow got buried and neglected. People have often wondered why this was so, and one possible reason might be that Howells was overly sensitive to criticism. The slightest suggestion that something was wrong with a piece and he would withdraw it from circulation. His self-confidence was never very strong, despite the head of the Royal College of Music, the notoriously difficult Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, saying that he was the most brilliant student of his generation. Sir Arthur Bliss, who entered the college a year after Howells, was quoted as saying “I had to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life, that there are others who are born with more gifts than oneself.”

1944 saw the beginning of Howells’ great settings of the Anglican liturgy. He wrote glorious settings of time-honoured works for many cathedrals, although many people never realised that for at least 15 years after his son Michael’s death, most of his compositions were imbued with this tragedy. His great, and very personal, requiem Hymnus Paradisi, despite being written in 1938, had to be wormed out of him for public performance by his friend, Ralph Vaughan Williams, for the Three Choirs Festival in 1950. The interesting thing about Howells’ work is that during the last half of the 20th century his choral works fell on unreceptive times and his earlier orchestral works gained more prominence.

The last, and most likely reason, was Howells’ own error in thinking that the public didn’t want music of symphonic length and that the concert-going public’s attention span was not capable of appreciating new symphonic works. Of course he was wrong. That’s exactly what the public wanted.

High Five with Adrian Cunningham By Barry O’Sullivan Adrian Cunningham is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and world traveller. Originally from Sydney and now based in New York, he is proving to be one of his country’s top exports. With fluent command of the saxophones, clarinet, and flute, he is one of the finest multi-instrumentalists in jazz today. Barry O’Sullivan recently posed these questions to Adrian about his musical life. What were your earliest musical experiences, and how did they determine moving toward music as a career?

What elements of the international music scene could you suggest that we could introduce here that may be lacking and could be of benefit?

The big defining moment was at a combined schools’ music camp towards the end of my last year of high school. It was purely a ‘classical’ music camp with us all playing in orchestras, but for the end-of-week concert I got together with my buddies, and we played a couple of Louis Armstrong-style traditional jazz tunes. All the students went nuts, and it was at this point I realised the powerful effect of this great music on people and thought to myself... “I could do this for a living!”

Well, specifically from my NYC experiences, I very much value the tradition of the music. Jazz is, after all, American. I’m all for musicians taking an art form and shaping it into something new, but with playing jazz and swing, I’d like to hear more of the tradition in the local scene. Bebop, sure, but also Swing and the New Orleans tradition. There are a hundred years of amazing history, and a lot of musicians (not all mind you!) only start listening halfway. Apart from your busy touring schedule, what are your other interests?

What was the motivation to further your career away from Australia?

Well, I love Tae Kwon Do and I’ve been doing it for a long time. It’s been hard to keep training because of COVID, but I’ve been doing my best in my own time. I also love travelling, which is lucky because I get to travel to perform. I’m always excited to explore a new city or country.

A year before moving, I visited NYC as a tourist, visiting the jazz clubs and getting a couple of lessons from the great players. I returned to Sydney inspired and the feeling stayed with me. After a couple of months back home, I thought to myself, “if I don’t try and live there, I’ll regret it”. And that was fourteen years ago.

What is your current musical project? Well, right now, I’m working on the business side of getting my band back on the road after two long years of lockdowns. My band, Professor Cunningham and His Old School, has just released a new CD of gospel music that I think turned out great, so we’ll be promoting that.

FineJazz Happenings June 2022 – Keith Pettigrew

SIMA’s Orange Winter JazzFest 10 to 12 June Elsewhere in this edition, you will see an outline of the Orange Winter Jazz Festival. What is important for FineJazz at Fine Music Sydney is our participation as broadcast partners with SIMA. Both SIMA and Fine Music Sydney have a focus on sharing excellent music with our audiences and promoting Australian musicians with an emphasis on the young. Our FineJazz programs cover everything from classic jazz and swing to jazz of the 21st century and our emerging jazz musicians. And at Orange, that is just what you will hear, from John Morrison’s Celebration of Swing to the Zela Margossian Quintet, and including the 2020 Fine Music Weatherly Jazz Scholar, Kate Wadey. Our FineJazz crew will be there compering performances and conducting green room interviews with the musicians. What is also exciting is that we will be able to provide recordings and interviews after the festival though our OnDemand services. But that is a story for another time. Jazz About Town – A sound gig guide The pandemic has decimated live performances across the musical world. This has been keenly felt among Sydney’s jazz venues, which all function on very slim margins. Indeed, the pandemic saw the closure of one renowned venue in Newtown, the Old 505. To bolster the return to live jazz and provide a new focus on our strategic goals of promoting Australian musicians, the FineJazz crew are bringing a new program to your ears. It is Jazz About Town, to be broadcast on Tuesdays at 1:00pm. The first episode will be on 28 June and will also be streaming OnDemand from our Fine Music website. The program will focus on the musicians who are playing Sydney gigs over the following week, and play their recent releases, with an occasional interview. This will be your audio gig guide; not every venue, not every musician, but enough to whet your appetite and plan the next week’s outings.

It will be presented by Deborah Evans, an old hand at 2MBS but youthful enough to bounce around the venues. Many will know her as the delightful Sunday night presenter of the FineJazz program Jazz After Hours. She is an experienced broadcaster, having presented both at 2MBS as well as in regional NSW, where it wasn’t only music but included food programs. Jazz About Town, with Deborah Evans. Tuesdays at 1:00pm from 28 June and streaming OnDemand.

The Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA) was established in 1984 to support jazz and improvised music with opportunities for contemporary musicians in Sydney. As well as championing local musicians, it has consistently encouraged younger musicians to pursue a career in music. Its focus on Australian musicians and young emerging jazz performers aligns closely with Fine Music Sydney’s strategic goals. Fine Music’s jazz crew has been developing a working relationship with SIMA, which has culminated in Fine Music Sydney being the exclusive broadcast partner for the Orange Winter Jazz Festival. Planning started in November last year, at a time when COVID had sent most music performances into the dissonance of empty jazz venues being videocast into audience computer screens. Planning has been driven

18

by SIMA’s artistic director and jazz bassist Zoe Hauptmann, alongside Jam Orange’s Luke Wilkinson. Zoe has background in the enormous and high-profile Wangaratta Jazz Festival, as well as the Ettalong Jazz Festival. Luke leads an organisation called Jam Orange that is a crucial part of the Orange community and is a co-producer of the Orange Winter Jazz Festival. Orange is an ideal regional centre for a jazz festival. Just over three hours from Sydney and Canberra, the regional destination has successfully hosted other festivals, with strong community connection to arts and culture. This includes the Food of Orange District Festival, the Orange Wine Festival, the Orange Chamber Music Festival, and a Medieval Faire.

The Orange Winter Jazz Festival endeavours to shine the light on local and national jazz musicians, bringing major jazz talent to regional NSW, and creating a destination music festival. With its stunning array of high-profile jazz musicians, it is destined to become a major feature on the touring network for Australian and international musicians. Thanks to the early sign up from significant jazz artists like Vince Jones, Mahalia Barnes, Emma Pask, Ed Kuepper, Sandy Evans, Andrea Keller and Mike Nock, the event now stands with over 50 performances in eight intimate venues over the long weekend of 10 – 12 June.

There are two significant highliners, Vince Jones, and the John Morrison Celebration of Swing, as well as Wanderlust, Alister Spence, Matt McMahon, Jonathan Zwartz and Phil Slater. Fine Music Sydney’s Weatherley Scholar Kate Wadey will be there. Importantly, there is a trove of young emerging musicians, including Hilary Geddes, Max Alduca, Alex Inman-Hislop, Lachlan Hamilton, and Jacques Emery. Fine Music Sydney will be in attendance, compering, interviewing, and recording, and replaying highlights from the performances through our OnDemand streaming services. It will be a festival that won’t just amaze and entertain over the weekend, but will be available to listen to and read about, all the way till next year. Volunteer Spotlight Chloe Sinclair Pamela Newling talks to Chloe Sinclair Chloe Sinclair became a Fine Music presenter just over a year ago. She was listening to the radio a lot during the first COVID lockdown and was looking for things to do that would expand her musical interests. “I thought it would be fun to get involved,” she says, “I have never done radio before, and I’ve really enjoyed learning the technical side of things, as well as getting my pronunciation right … and I love it!” Asked about the source of her love of music, Chloe comments that music was always playing in her home when she was growing up. “My parents, even though they had no musical training, let me follow my passion when I announced that I wanted to learn the violin at age five. My brother is a musician too, so clearly the encouragement to get involved in the arts worked!” Chloe explains a special moment in her musical journey: “In 2009 as a young performer, I was the youth soprano soloist for Peter Sculthorpe’s Rites of Passage – as part of the Canberra International Music Festival. This was only the second time the work had been performed since the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1975. The Fitter’s Workshop venue has amazing acoustics, with an over seven-second reverb delay, creating an almost medieval quality ideal for haunting music. It was a thrill to meet Sculthorpe during rehearsal and he gave me a signed copy of the score (which I treasure). “The Omega Ensemble recently premiered my work Forest in the Sea at the Sydney Opera House as part of their CoLAB program. After the long Covid lockdown, having my piece performed by outstanding musicians at such an iconic venue overlooking the harbour, was a truly special moment!” This talented young musician has already done so much, so what about the future? Chloe is in the final stages of a Masters in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and plans to do a PhD in Composition next (after a well-earned break). “While I love performing, nothing can match the thrill of hearing your compositions come to life when played by skilled musicians,” she says. “I have a special affinity for choral music, having been a chorister in Gondwana Voices for several years – and I have had the privilege of writing songs for some of their choirs.”

Illustration by Lyndon Pike Chloe’s musical tastes lean towards more contemporary works – Nico Muhly is a favorite composer, for example. “There is so much Australian music to love, too,” she comments, “Paul Stanhope, William Barton, Sally Whitwell, Ella Macens, to name a few. Ideally, I want audiences to celebrate the music of living composers just as much as they do the classics.“ Her joy in life is music, in all its wonderful forms! As well as composing and studying, she runs the strings program at two Sydney schools teaching violin and viola, as well as teaching privately. She has recently started tutoring as a casual academic at the Sydney Conservatorium. Beyond music, Chloe says: “I love to unwind by cooking, running, and playing table tennis and chess with my partner – I can already beat him at table tennis, and one day I’ll finally beat him at chess, too!”

Live Performance Review: 9 to 5 - the Musical Tessa Miles reviews the stage musical based on the Dolly Parton lead hit movie

9 to 5 is known as being one of Dolly Parton’s most iconic songs and movies, and it has been adapted into a musical, now playing at The Capital Theatre in Sydney. The musical sticks pretty closely to the story from the movie, following Doralee Rhodes (Erin Clare) as she deals with her sexist and disgusting boss, Frank Hart Jnr (Eddie Perfect) who continues to try and makes sexual advances towards her in the workplace; Judy Burnly (Casey Donovan) as she navigates working for the first time after splitting from her husband; and Violet Newstead (Marina Prior) as she works hard to get a promotion, only to be passed over again and again for her male colleagues. The three lead female characters bond over their experiences in the workplace and come together to get revenge on Hart, their boss. You will find yourself belly laughing at the shenanigans these women get themselves into all in the name of revenge, while also hiding any suspicious activities from Hart’s loyal admin assistant Roz Keith. Caroline O’Connor’s comedic performance as Roz Keith is raunchy and iconic and could be the sole reason you see this show.

22

The show has an exciting energy, toe-tapping musical numbers, incredible comedic timings and dazzling sets which help bring this movie-turned-musical to life. The performances from each of these big names are fun and joyous and make you shake your head knowing that some of these themes are still present in workplaces today. The show is a fun night out with your friends, but I definitely don’t recommend taking young children, which the audience was filled with on the night I went. While I hope the innuendos went over their heads the show is definitely for adults only! Still, it adds to the incredible line-up of newer musical theatre shows touring to Australia and is a great celebration of the return of theatre after COVID. And if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Dolly Parton in the show, you may be lucky!

CD REVIEWS Christopher Gordon: Chamber music Magic Fire Ensemble Magic Fire Music MFM 007

Christopher Gordon is an English-born Australian composer. He has been commissioned by ensembles such as the SSO, the ACO and the Omega Ensemble; has provided ballet and dance works for Graeme Murphy; and has composed music for numerous films, including Mao’s last dancer and Ladies in black. Such a curriculum vitae indicates a composer adept at writing approachable music: this collection of chamber music shows his work to be substantial and challenging as well. The Magic Fire Ensemble is a collective name for the musicians gathered for this album, and includes Louise Johnson (harp), Nick Byrne

(ophicleide) and cellist and conductor Umberto Clerici. The 14 compositions vary markedly in length and in instrumental forces. The brief Look away was commissioned by Nick Byrne, who describes it as ‘an elegant, introspective and musically economical piece’. In Dust, the notes played by the eight harpists provide cascading arpeggios and lingering sustained notes. Freefall is a symphony for an ensemble of 12 musicians: it is written in the octatonic scale and is notable for its propulsiveness and instrumental colour. — Paul Cooke

Rhythm Ross Edwards: Frog and star cycles of change Amy Dickson, saxophone; Colin Currie, percussion Sydney Symphony Orchestra; Melbourne Symphony Orchestra David Zinman, Markus Stenz, Lothar Koenigs, conductors. ABC Classic ABCL001

On this new recording, Ross Edwards’ Symphony no 2 joins Symphonies 1, 3 and 4 in the public sphere. Alongside this long-awaited release is his most recent orchestral work, the concerto for saxophone and percussion, Frog and star cycle, and a re-release of his Symphony no 3. The Symphony no 2, Earth spirit songs, though quite short in duration in symphonic terms, is reminiscent of the movements of Mahler’s symphonies with a solo voice leading the musical drama. The voice is that of Yvonne Kenny, for whom the piece was composed, and the

24

texts range from Hildegard of Bingen to Judith Wright. The longest work on the disc is the double concerto, Frog and star cycle, composed for London-based soloists, percussionist Colin Currie and Australian saxophonist, Amy Dickson. Their skills perfectly evoke Edwards’ famous Maninya and chant styles of writing, both using delicacy and rhythmic energy to fully bring to life Edwards’ vision of harmony between earth and heaven. — James Nightingale

Forest Field

Fergus McCreadie Trio Edition Records

At age 25, Scotsman Fergus McCreadie’s rise to prominence has indeed been meteoric. He came to jazz as a teenager following an unsuccessful stint with bagpipes. While later studying piano at the Royal Scotland Conservatory he formed the Fergus McCreadie Trio with fellow students, double bassist David Bowden and drummer Stephen Henderson. The just released album Forest Floor Is the trio’s third in a little over three years, each being comprised entirely of original works. On the back of the first two releases, McCreadie

and the Trio have won multiple national Scottish awards and are sought after as UK and European concert performers. McCreadie’s compositions reflect a deep passion for his homeland referencing elements of traditional Scottish culture, landscapes and history. Listen for his J S Bach-like structures and references to traditional Scottish jigs and dances. It is jazz bursting with vitality and assures his place as a significant contributor to world contemporary jazz. Especially recommended is The unfurrowed field.

What’s not to love about this album? A ten-piece orchestra of mainly young musicians, who since their debut album five years ago have developed into a tight outfit full of life and energy and as musically accomplished and engaging as any big band anywhere. Over those years, band members have progressed from students to members of noted bands: Judy Bailey’s Jazz Connection, Divergence and Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. All four of Power’s offspring have earned their own place making it a family affair, but also listen for pianist Robbie Mann, a wonderful new player who includes the stride style of Fats Waller. The Great Gatsby Orchestra

play the hot dance music of the 1920s, the music of Oliver, Armstrong, Morton and Ellington, and include Australian compositions such as those by Dave Dallwitz, Frank Coughlan and Frank Johnson. Shake That Thing takes its title track from a 1926 tune played Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. Hot jazz this certainly is. Lively, syncopated, and with a beat that makes you want to dance. This is a whole new generation bringing their own exuberance to swing with a sense of enjoyment that shines through.

Opera Rara ORC 25 2:41 Margherita d’Anjou (Queen Margaret), widow of Henry VI, who was killed during the Wars of the Roses, had fled to France but had returned with an army in an attempt to reclaim the throne for her son. After her army was defeated, she fled to the Scottish Highlands. The French Duke, Lavarenne, has left his wife, Isaura, to be with Margaret with whom he is in love. Isaura, disguised as a man, follows as an assistant to the Queen’s physician, Gamautte. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who drove Henry VI from the throne, pursues Margaret to Scotland. In an attempt to evade him, Margaret disguises herself as Gaumette’s wife. Lavarenne writes love letters to Margaret giving his disguised wife, Isaura, the disagreeable task of delivering them. Richard recognises Margaret in disguise and seizes her son. Gamautte and Lavarenne carry out a successful attack to rescue Margaret and her son. General Belmonte, who had switched allegiance from Margaret to Gloucester, now returns to her service, and Richard is defeated. The Queen and her son are saved and the penitent Lavarenne returns to his forgiving wife. En vain j’espère ... Idole de ma vie, from Robert le Diable (1831). Sonata, op 167, Undine (1882). Sharon Bezaly, fl; Ronald Brautigam, pf. BIS SACD-1729 18 14:30 SATURDAY MATINEE Operetta in the afternoon Prepared by Elaine Siversen Offenbach, J. Orpheus in the Underworld. Operetta in two acts. Libretto by Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy. First performed Paris, 1858. EURYDICE: Natalie Dessay, sop ARISTAEUS/PLUTO: Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, ten ORPHEUS: Yann Beuron, ten PUBLIC OPINION: Ewa Podles, mezz JUPITER: Laurent Naouri, bar Lyon National Choir & O; Grenoble CO/Marc Minkowski. EMI 5 56725 2 1:50 Eurydice is in love with the shepherd, Aristaeus, who is really the god Pluto, and her husband, Orpheus, is in love with Chloë, a shepherdess. Orpheus wants to get rid of his wife but keep it secret, fearing Public Opinion. Orpheus and Pluto plot to kill Eurydice so that Pluto may have her. Pluto, as Aristaeus, tricks her into walking into the trap and, as she dies, he changes to his true form. They descend into the Underworld. Public Opinion threatens Orpheus with ruin to his violin-teaching career unless he goes to rescue Eurydice. Orpheus reluctantly agrees. When Orpheus arrives in the Underworld, Jupiter announces that he is going to the Underworld to sort it out and consents to the other gods coming along. In the Underworld, Jupiter finds Eurydice’s prison and slips through the keyhole by turning into a beautiful, golden fly. He reveals himself promising to help her, but he wants her for himself. While the gods are partying, the disguised Eurydice sneaks in. They all dance with abandon to the Galop infernal (or the Can-can). Ominous violin music heralds the approach of Orpheus and Public Opinion. Orpheus must not look back, or he will lose Eurydice forever. Public Opinion keeps a close eye on him, to keep him from cheating, but Jupiter throws a lightning bolt, making him jump and look back but all ends happily with a reprise of the Galop.

A NNI V ERSA RY Offenbach, J. The tales of Hoffman. Opera in five acts. Libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré. First performed Paris, 1881. NICKLAUSSE: Huguette Tourangeau, mezz HOFFMANN: Plácido Domingo, ten LINDORF, COPPELIUS, DR MIRACLE, DAPERTUTTO: Gabriel Bacquier, bar STELLA, OLYMPIA, ANTONIA, GUILIETTA: Joan Sutherland, sop Pro Arte Lausanne Choir; Chorale du Brassus; Suisse Romande Choir & O/Richard Bonynge. Decca 417 363-2 2:22 Drinking in a tavern with Nicklausse, the poet Hoffmann receives a letter from his love, Stella, a prima donna. His enemy Lindorf asks him to tell the story of his three love affairs. First, Hoffmann loves Olympia, a mechanical doll. He believes she is real until she is

broken by Coppelius. Then he loves Antonia, forbidden to sing at the risk of death. Urged on by the evil Dr Miracle, she sings for Hoffmann and dies in his arms. Finally, he loves Giulietta, a Venetian courtesan. When he kills her lover in a duel, Giulietta leaves with Dapertutto. The three women in these stories are really just different aspects of Stella so, when she finally appears, Hoffmann is drunk and she leaves him for Lindorf. Nicklausse, who has witnessed these affairs, becomes his muse and urges him to use his suffering to write great literature.

20:00 AT THE OPERA Opera oscura: The triumph of duty Hasse, J. Attilio Regolo. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Pietro Metastasio. First performed Dresden, 1750. MARCUS ATTILIUS REGULUS: Axel Köhler, ct HAMILCAR: Randall Wong, ct ATTILIA: Martina Borst, mezz LICINIUS: Michael Volle, bar MANLIUS: Markus Schäfer, ten BARCE: Carmen Fuggiss, sop PUBLIUS: Sibylla Rubens, sop Capella Sagittariana/Frieder Bernius. Hänssler PHO7035 2:43 The Roman General, Marcus Attilius Regulus, captured by the Carthaginians, has been sent back to Rome with the Carthaginian ambassador Hamilcar to arrange peace. If unsuccessful, he will be killed on his return to Carthage. His daughter Attilia urges her husband, the Tribune Licinius, and the Consul Manlius to arrange Regulus’ freedom. Hamilcar is betrothed to Barce, who is held captive in Rome, but she is also loved by Publius, Regulus’ son and himself a Roman leader. Regulus appears before the Senate and disobeys his captors’ orders by urging Rome to reject Carthage’s peace plan. He remains aloof from his former Senate colleagues and his family. Barce pleads with Attilia to ask the Senators to reject Regulus’ advice. Regulus defends his position to his son and daughter, as well as Manlius (a former rival, now a friend) and Licinius. Learning that the Senate has voted as he recommended, he asks Publius to look after Attilia. Publius in turn frees Barce to return to Carthage with Hamilcar. They resolve to try to save Regulus from his fate. Regulus asks Manlius to act as a father towards Attilia and Publius, and to work with Publius in countering a popular uprising aimed at securing Regulus’ freedom. Grateful for Barce’s release, Hamilcar proposes an escape plan. Attilia and Publius argue that Regulus is not bound by his undertaking to return to Carthage. Regulus rejects both approaches, attempts to calm the people by appealing to the importance of duty and keeping one’s word and departs with his captors.
