It’s International Women’s Day on March 8, and a good time to pause and reflect on the progress women have made in the still male-dominated world of classical music. In 2013, a Bachtrack survey found only Marin Alsop in the top 100 maestros, whereas today the number of female conductors has risen to eight per cent. This is encouraging, but the issue isn’t helped by comments from highly esteemed musical establishment figures such as Mariss Jansons, who two years before he died famously said, “...seeing a woman on the podium... well, let’s just say it’s not my cup of tea.” Contemporary female composers have done much better, with 24 per cent of the world’s top 100, but it struck me that we at Fine Music should be putting our money where our mouth is and play more music by female composers! Paul Cooke addresses at least some of this imbalance with his program Australian Women’s Voices on March 8. We say goodbye this month to our General Manager Rebecca Beare, who is moving on to another not-for-profit organisation, this time in the field of animal welfare. We wish her well and thank her for all the work and effort she has put into Fine Music over the last four years, not least as Editor of this magazine. David Ogilvie david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Thomas Adès at 50

James Nightingale profiles a leading composer

In Hebrew, words with similar meanings share a common root. As such, Adès’ Tevot, which takes its name from the word for music bars or measures, also references Noah’s Ark, and the cradle in which the baby Moses travelled down the Nile (all being similarly enclosed). Like Asyla, the title references a place of safety and Adès expands this idea to become a metaphor for the Earth travelling through space, sheltering humanity on its journey through the universe.

English composer Thomas Adès is one of today’s most prominent composers and musicians. A gifted pianist and conductor, he has recorded chamber music and songs with many of the world’s best musicians, as well as having composed for the finest orchestras and chamber ensembles.

The North Star, a beacon of navigation for sailors, is the subject of the third part of the trilogy, Polaris. One review described Polaris as a ‘friendly complication’, a description that could be used for much of Adès’ music. His works are not simple, but they nonetheless draw the listener in. Adès’ ability to intrigue comes from his capacity to research and draw together conflicting ideas. For example, America: A Prophecy, which was composed for Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic to mark the new millennium, draws on sources from the (pre-Spanish) Mayan civilisation in Mexico, and words and music from the militant Christian Spanish invaders. In combining these sources, Adès juxtaposes nature and progress, themes which have only increased in relevance since it was composed. Tellingly, Adès makes no claim to sit on either side of the politics exposed in the work: instead, he hopes that the music will make people think and re-evaluate their preconceptions.

Born in London to artistic parents Dawn and Timothy, Adès studied music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before heading to Cambridge to complete his University studies. There, he worked with Alexander Goehr and Robin Holloway and graduated in 1992 with firsts in both piano and composition. Initially, Adès travelled the world as an in-demand musician: in 2004 he took up the post of Britten Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music and was composer in residence at the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 2005-2007 and at the Melbourne Festival in 2010. More recently, Adès’ attention has been on music for theatre and film, culminating with Exterminating Angel, an opera based on a film of the same name. He also wrote the music for the biographical film Colette. Recent performing credits have displayed his passion for the Czech composer Leoš Janáček, including a recording of Janáček’s works for solo piano.

To celebrate Thomas Adès’ 50th birthday this March, Fine Music presents a Sunday Special dedicated to this leading musician of the 21st century, including tracks from his recordings with Anthony Marwood, Steven Isserlis and Ian Bostridge.

At the heart of Adès’ symphonic works are three major pieces: Asyla; Tevot; and Polaris. Though not symphonies, they are nonetheless works of great ambition that use musical ideas to build metaphors for their subjects. Asyla – for which Adès was awarded the Grawemeyer Award, the world’s richest composition prize – plays on the plural of the word asylum and the word’s double meaning: a place of safety that is also a prison for the insane.

In Conversation with the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra Mona Omar talks to ARCO Co-Artistic Directors Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen

What can we expect from your 2021 season? Illuminate – Evoke – Emerge Our three program titles conjure up the captivating musical journey on which we will take our musicians and audiences this year, from the earliest flourishes of the Classical era right up to the early 20th Century. Our aim is to continually deepen and enhance our own knowledge and understanding of composers – from household names to lesser-knowns – and of the historical context of the repertoire we perform. In doing so, we present our audiences with enjoyable, engaging and varied concert programs where we dig a little deeper into the relationship between the pieces and the way music and performance styles have changed over time, thereby bringing a little magic to the journey. The silence and stillness brought on by the pandemic in 2020 means we are yearning to travel and to perform live again. We are very excited to be performing for more audiences than ever before, with concerts in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Western Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Muswellbrook, Orange and the Blue Mountains. We are a national orchestra, so we’re thrilled to be sharing our love of historically informed performance with our concert touring and music education programs around the country.

Your 2021 season, with three tours across the year has been described as your largest ever. Was this in response to the shortened 2020 season or had it been planned for a while? The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra is now in its eighth year and has flourished and expanded consistently over that time. We are well on track with our 10-year plan although 2020 did slow this down a little, as you would expect! Our 2021 season is a true representation of everything that the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra stands for by presenting historically informed ensembles ranging in size from trios and septets, string orchestras to our full symphony orchestra. Richard Gill AO was the most brilliant music educator this country has seen and from his dedicated work as our Founding Artistic Director grew the Voyage of Musical Discovery and Young Mannheim Symphonists education programs. We are proud these programs are now running successfully on a national basis and we are thrilled our Young Mannheim Symphonists will be joining us on stage in our last program of the year.

In 2020, the orchestra took advantage of the digital performance opportunities through MDCH. How did this come about, and did you find that your existing audience followed you online? The Melbourne Digital Concert Hall played an essential and laudable role in supporting musicians during the lockdowns of 2020, particularly small-tomedium Performing Arts organisations such as ours, and they continue to offer support in live-streaming. We have a wonderful relationship with the MDCH directors, Chris Howlett and Adele Schonhardt, and are extremely grateful to them. Our online performances with MDCH provided an opportunity for our existing audience to ‘attend’ our 2020 concerts and it also gave us an accessible platform for new audience members to discover our orchestra. We look forward to welcoming them to the live concert hall this year. In December the orchestra received funding from Create NSW, the largest given out in the Classical Music, Opera and Choral category. What does this mean for you? The Create NSW funding is an enormous honour, and we are incredibly grateful, not only to Create NSW, but also for our other government funding from Creative Victoria, City of Sydney, and City of Melbourne. These significant grants, particularly following a challenging year, together with the immense and generous support from our individual donors and philanthropic foundations, allow the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra to continue to engage over a hundred freelance musicians every year, offer music education programs to a couple of thousand students annually, and enjoy the company of loyal and enthusiastic audience members and supporters. The funding will also give us the opportunity to realise our artistic vision more fully for the orchestra. It means we can invite artistic consultants to reveal deeper insights into the music and into historical performance practice, photographers to develop our visual aesthetic, and videographers to film our concerts to broaden our digital reach and increase the accessibility of our concerts for people who can’t make it to the concert hall. We see this as a vital part of our role as a member of the Australian Arts community, especially as the entire industry continues to be deeply impacted by the pandemic.

Andrew Scott & The Pocket Trio Barry O’Sullivan looks at an emerging jazz talent Andrew Scott began playing piano at a very early age. He wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about this initial musical experience and the lessons were intermittent even though the family kept the piano intended for them. Improvisation began during a period of playing the saxophone at Manly High School in the big bands and various quintets organised by the school’s music teacher, with a sudden realisation that maybe there was a way of making a living doing something that he enjoyed. He successfully auditioned and graduated from the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and it was the piano that resurfaced as his instrument of choice. He then went on to further his music education attaining a Graduate Diploma in Film Scoring at the Australian Film and Television School under the direction of the late Martin Armiger. He has toured nationally and performs regularly with some of the most exciting talents in the local jazz scene; Monica Trapaga, Geoff Bull, Kate Wadey, Gregg Arthur, Tilly Street, Dan Barnett, and George Washingmachine.

The Pocket Trio is an extension of his creativity in composition. Andrew composed all of the tracks on their initial recording, All at Once, (excluding the classic standard, Over the Rainbow) with a focus on tight arrangements and groovy ‘pockets’.

alongside some of Australia’s biggest names in Jazz including Mike Nock, Paul Grabowsky, and Dale Barlow. As well as accompanying such jazz luminaries, Max is a chief collaborator in projects that have been touring locally and internationally with recent performances at Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Vulkan DK/Aus), Wellington Jazz Festival (Steve Barry Trio), and Manly Jazz Festival (The Pocket Trio).

Performing together, the trio swing with an incredible sense of energy and rhythm, guaranteed to provoke smiles, foot-tapping, and good times. They also love to re-perform complex and exciting arrangements transcribed from recordings of other classic jazz trios from the jazz canon, namely those led by Oscar Peterson, Bill Charlap, and Ahmad Jamal. Their live album launch provided its own set of challenges during lockdown with an initial gig in Melbourne at The Paris Cat in March to be followed by a Canberra gig which had to be cancelled. The Sydney launch happened later in the year at their regular house gig on Tuesdays at Moya’s Juniper Lounge in Redfern.

Geldens began drumming at his school, St Aloysius College at Milsons Point, under the tuition of Andrew Dickeson. He then entered the jazz course at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where he was again tutored by Dickeson as well as master drummer Simon Barker. In 2014 Geldens was selected to be part of the World JM Jazz Orchestra led by Pianist/Composer Erlend Skomsvoll, consisting of some of the finest young jazz musicians from around the world. Geldens has performed alongside some of Australia’s finest: Dale Barlow, Brendan Clarke, David Panichi, Brett Hirst, Matt McMahon, Johnathan Zwartz, John Harkins, and the vocalist Emma Pask. Geldens has spent time in New York gaining tuition from some of his favourite drummers: Kenny Washington, Kendrick Scott, and Greg Hutchinson.

Other members of the trio, Max Alducca on bass and Tim Geldens on the drums, have established reputations on the Sydney Jazz and experimental music scene. Both studied at the NSW Conservatorium. Alduca is an active recording artist who has been featured on recent album releases including Blueprints and Vignettes (Steve Barry Quartet), The Rumour of Forests and Waves with Trioflight, and with Microfiche on Everything and Other Infinities. International Women’s Day Paul Cooke Celebrates Australia’s Female Composers

It can’t have been easy for any Australian composer in the first decades of the 20th century! Roy Agnew lamented the lack of opportunity of “keeping in touch with contemporary musical thought”, especially when it came to large-scale ‘serious’ music. Most of Alfred Hill’s symphonies, for example, started out as string quartets because of a dearth of symphony orchestras of professional standard. For women who wished to compose, it was even more difficult. They were often homemaker and child-bearer, often had to work around the competing claims of their partner’s occupation, and often had to submit to the criticism or ‘helpful’ advice of those who considered they were encroaching on a masculine realm. Nevertheless, many were not to be deterred. Close to a third of those whose work was written or performed in 1920 were women. Here are a few of them. Kitty Parker (1886-1971) found success as a pianist, winning the Piano Solo Gold Medal at the Australian Exhibition of Women’s Work in 1907. In 1909, she set off to England to study piano with Percy Grainger, who regarded her as “the most gifted piano pupil I have ever had”. Many of Parker’s compositions were written for voice and piano, or for solo piano, which perfectly suited her and her English tenor husband Hubert Eisdell. Together they performed Parker’s compositions on a concert tour of Australia in 1920. Her most successful piece was Down Longford Way, one of four musical sketches for piano, described as “an opulently Romantic piece of striking contract and colour”. Grainger later orchestrated it, having failed to convince Parker to do so. She was prone to bouts of depression and self-doubt, and after the breakdown of her marriage, ceased to compose, resuming work as an accompanist and later teaching.

opportunity to learn orchestration and broaden her range of works. After the death of her husband, and with income from her work as composer and pianist sporadic, she spent 27 years as the music critic for the Melbourne Sun-News Pictorial. Florence Ewart (1864-1949) was born in England, and studied with Arthur Sullivan in London, and Joseph Joachim and Adolph Brodsky in Germany. She arrived in Australia in her forties, accompanying her husband Alfred, a Professor of Botany, and their two sons. Ewart composed many works for large forces including four operas, one of which, The Courtship of Miles Standish, was premiered in concert form in 1931. She seemed not to be deterred by the knowledge that many of her larger works were unlikely to be performed. Better to compose them, than nothing at all!

Linda Phillips (1899-2002) was a more ambitious composer. She studied composition with Fritz Hart, who encouraged her to write songs and chamber music. Her songs proved popular in eisteddfods and were also performed by such luminaries as Joan Sutherland, Joan Hammond and Marjorie Lawrence. Phillips’ chamber works included the Rhapsody Sonata, which is in an English Pastoral style, and compositions such as Exultation which were influenced by ancient Judaic music. She described her music as “moderately modern and similar to Samuel Barber in that it has a between the wars lyricism”. Like Parker, Phillips didn’t have the

20:00 AT THE OPERA Prepared by James Nightingale Handel, G. Alessandro. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Paolo Rolli. First performed London, 1726. ALEXANDER THE GREAT: Max Emanuel Cencic, ct ROXANA: Julia Lezhneva, sop LISAURA: Karina Gauvin, sop TAXILIS, King of India: Xavier Sabata, ct LEONATUS, Macedonian Captain: Juan Sancho, bar CLEON, Macedonian Captain: Vasily Khoroshev, ct CLEITUS, Macedonian Captain: In-Sung Sim, bass City of Athens Choir; Armonia Atenea/George Petrou. Decca 478 4699 3:10 After taking the Indian city of Oxidraca, Alexander the Great is courted by two beautiful women, the Persian princess Roxana and the Scythian princess Lisaura. Meanwhile there is unrest amongst Alexander’s captains, the difference caused by Alexander’s demand to be worshipped as a god. Cleon is happy to go along with Alexander’s wishes but Cleitus refuses to prostrate himself as it is not the Greek way. As Alexander deliberates on his empire, there is an attack on his life through sabotage as the canopy above his throne collapses. Cleitus is then imprisoned, while Cleon brings news of an uprising which Alexander goes off to confront. Leonatus breaks Cleitus free from prison, locking up Cleon in his place and the two renegade captains plan to challenge Alexander directly. As all the protagonists come together in the final scene, news of the failure of the uprising arrives, leading the leaders of the rebellion, Leonatus and Cleitus to tremble in fear before Alexander. Instead of punishment, Alexander pardons them, before asking for the friendship of Lisaura and the hand of Roxana, leading to rejoicing from all. 23:30 MUSIC OF THE NIGHT Prepared by James Nightingale Górecki, H. Ezzelino da Romana. While Oberto is in exile, his daughter, Leonora, is seduced and abandoned by Riccardo who is about to marry Ezzelino's sister, Cuniza. Leonora plans to disrupt the wedding day. When Leonora and Oberto are reunited, he has mixed feelings but eventually agrees with her plan. Cuniza has some misgivings about marrying Riccardo. When Leonora encounters Cuniza's companion, Imelda, and tells her story of betrayal, Imelda reports this to Cuniza. She agrees to help Leonora and Oberto and hides them in her room. Cuniza accuses Riccardo of infidelity in front of all the guests and calls off the wedding. Riccardo tries to blame Leonora while Oberto is so angry that he bursts in and challenges Riccardo to a duel. The duel begins between Oberto and Riccardo

20

but it's interrupted by Cuniza and Leonora together. Oberto isn't going to give up the fight and suggests they move the duel further away into the woods. The sounds of the duel off-stage are heard in the distance and then a remorseful Riccardo enters alone: he has killed Oberto. Leonora is distraught. Riccardo flees Italy, leaving all his property to Leonora but she blames herself for her father's death and opts to go into a convent. Overture to The force of destiny (1862). Opera Rara ORC41 2:09 A pious parrot, Vert-Vert, in the convent at Nevers talked like a good Christian. He was sent to the convent at Nantes but acquired some sea-faring vocabulary during the sea voyage. Horrified at Vert-Vert’s foul language, the nuns sent him back to Nevers where it was impossible to make him relearn Latin. Nonetheless, the bird spent his last days embraced in solicitude and has now died. A funeral is held with an oration by Valentin who could not abide the parrot. Students Mimi, Emma and Bathilde wish to find another parrot but instead they decide on Valentin to take on the parrot’s name. He agrees because he is in love with Mimi. Two weeks earlier, Emma and Bathilde had secretly married two dragoons, Comte d’Arlange and Chevalier de Bergerac, who promise to release the girls. Vert-Vert goes to visit his sick aunt in Nevers followed

by the dragoons. Vert-Vert becomes involved with a famous singer and spends his time carousing. A mysterious dragoon (Mimi in disguise) appears. The dragoons devise a plan in which Mimi will help them to rescue their wives from the convent and, in return, they will help her to win Vert-Vert. Back at the convent, Vert-Vert confesses that he has learned to drink, curse (like the parrot) and to flirt. He demonstrates this to the horrified mistress, Mademoiselle Paturelle, and the thrilled girls. Left alone, Vert-Vert and Mimi squabble but he tells her that he has now learned about love; and knows that he only loves her, Mimi; they fall into each other’s arms. That night, amid ensuing chaos, Mademoiselle Paturelle agrees that the couples can be reunited, Mimi and Vert-Vert can marry and the remaining girls can also marry if they find suitable husbands among the dragoons.

Opera Rara ORC31 2:19 Noah and his sons are busy building their ark. Cadmo, Chief of the Staraps tries to burn the ark to the ground, but the plot fails due to the intervention of his wife Sela, who tries to protect them. Sela’s confidante, Ada is in love with Cadmo and, wanting to take Sela’s place, tells Cadmo that his wife has feelings for Jafet, one of Noah’s sons. Cadmo orders her arrest and execution along with Noah and his sons. Noah warns Cadmo to beware the anger and fury of his God, describing his vision of the coming flood. Torn by his love for Sela and his hate for Noah and his family, Cadmo allows them to go. Noah and his family board the ark, but Sela refuses. Cadmo and Ada are to be married, when Sela arrives to plead to say a final farewell to her son. Cadmo offers to take her back if she renounces Noah’s God. Desperate, she renounces Jehovah and falls dead at a great clap of thunder. A furious storm rages and all rush out in confusion and are engulfed as Noah’s ark floats on the rising waters. Rossini, G. Haydn, J. Orlando Paladino. Dramma eroicomico in three acts, Hob.XXVIII:11. Libretto by Nunziato Porta. First performed Eszterháza, 1782. ORLANDO: Michael Schade, ten ANGELICA: Patricia Petibon, sop MEDORO: Werner Güra, ten RODOMONTE: Christian Gerhaber, bar ALCINA: Elisabeth von Magnus, sop PASQUALE: Marcus Schäfer, ten EURILLA: Malin Hartelius, sop CARONTE: Florian Boesch, bar Concentus Musicus Vienna/Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The travelling knight Orlando is searching for Angelica who, however, prefers her young lover Medoro. They decamp to a lonely castle. Rodomonte arrives ready to fight Orlando and asks some shepherds where he might be found. Worried for Medoro, Angelica summons the sorceress Alcina who promises that she will help. Rodomonte encounters Pasquale and challenges him to a duel, which does not eventuate because Rodomonte learns that Orlando is looking for him. Orlando learns of Angelica's love for Medoro and is enraged. Eurilla and Pasquale hurry away to warn Angelica. Orlando then meets Rodomonte but is saved by being turned into a beetle by Alcina.

The two meet for unarmed combat in a forest. This is thwarted by Orlando's hasty departure in pursuit of Angelica after being told that she and Medoro are fleeing. The lovers become separated and eventually reunite but are discovered by Orlando.Alcina intervenes on their behalf and uses her magic again to turn Orlando to stone. The others find out about this and, because they decline to ask for revenge, Alcina reverses the spell but bids Orlando to accompany her to the river Lethe, where she asks Caronte to bathe Orlando to soothe his anger. Meanwhile, Angelica and Medoro are being attacked by savages in the forest. Rodomonte and Orlando join battle to defeat the assailants, whereupon Orlando sets aside his lust for Angelica and wishes her and Medoro well. Alcina transforms the forest into a beautiful garden in which love too can flourish.

Volunteer Spotlight Nena Beretin

Pamela Newling speaks with Presenter and Classical Guitarist Nena Beretin

Nena Beretin began presenting for Fine Music Sydney about three years ago, following completion of a PhD in Musicology. She was encouraged to volunteer with the station by good friend and regular presenter, James Hunter. She says she enjoys the opportunity that Fine Music presents to work with people who have a passion for music.  Nena describes her musical taste as eclectic: “I love the challenge of modernist composers such as Luciano Berio and Elliott Carter, but I also adore the way harpsichordist and conductor Erin Helyard whispers new life into the operas and music of the Baroque period—his live performances and recordings are so thrilling and engaging.” “Preparation for presentation takes four to five hours of research and writing”, says Nena, “The challenges are to say something informative and interesting within a limited time frame about the work at hand, its composer, or the musicians.” Asked about the need to present music that is not to her taste, Nena says she looks forward to presenting works that she probably wouldn’t listen to at work or home, “as the required research and listening at times brings about a new appreciation for the piece”. Nena’s love of music was inspired by Margaret Sheringham, her first classical guitar teacher. “She was wonderful—so encouraging and enthusiastic about music making and listening.” Nena went on to complete a master’s degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, followed by a PhD from University of New England. She relates a memorable moment: “In 1988, still a student, I had tickets to see an opera at the Sydney Opera House, but on arrival the opera was cancelled due to illness. In lieu, ticket holders were offered SSO seats in the Concert Hall for the Australian premiere of From the Canyons to the Stars... by Olivier Messiaen, who was in the audience. I hadn’t heard anything like it before and I was instantaneously hooked on modernist music.“

Nena has had a long career as a classical guitar teacher and performer and has presented papers at national and international conferences in musicology. Currently, she is Artistic Director of Phoenix, a new performing arts space located in Chippendale. The theatre is exclusively funded by philanthropist Judith Neilson, to nurture local talent. This role and her involvement with Fine Music Sydney complement one another — at the radio station she presents digital performances and at Phoenix is involved with live performance to create digital content. As an escape from her busy musical life Nena enjoys reading and cooking for family and friends.

That Dangerous Tango Anne-Louise Luccarini celebrates Astor Piazzolla

Piazzolla took this new style

Domed forehead, deep frown, ravaged face… thick grey moustache, unsmiling, like a priest or matador. He hitches his right foot on to the chair, where the bandoneόn player usually sits, and bends low over the instrument resting on his thigh as if to ask it a private question. The sweetness and visceral melancholy of the reply that sighs and throbs through the silence, is overpoweringly sensual, true tango, a simulacrum of the act of love. One critic wrote: “In Piazzolla’s hands, tango is dangerous music.”

home to Buenos Aires, this tango

nuevo, and they hated it. Violently. They said he had destroyed the Argentine tango.

Study he did, becoming Alberto Ginastera’s first private pupil. That was in the daytime, but he continued to work gigs at night. In 1953 he won a grant to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Mademoiselle glanced at the pile of scores, listened to him play, and told him she heard plenty of Bartok, Stravinsky and Ravel, but… “I thought she’d throw me from the fourth floor,” he said later. Instead, Boulanger (strict but wise) listened to one of his tangos. “That,” she said, taking his hand, “is Astor Piazzolla”. During his year with her, she taught him how to use counterpoint and fugue to establish his own language, and to be himself within that language.

Astor Piazzolla was born in Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires, on 11 March 1921 to parents of Italian stock. Work was scarce, and when the baby was three his father decided to try his luck in America, as his father had tried in Argentina. So Piazzolla grew up in New York, learning to defend himself on the streets of Little Italy. He listened to his father’s phonograph records, taken by the tango that sang nostalgically of the homeland he could not remember. His father spotted a square squeezebox in a pawn shop one day. It was an old bandoneόn, and he bought it for Astor’s birthday: upon it, a pianist in a neighbouring apartment taught him to play Bach. Odd-jobbing for Carlos Gardel, he learnt to play tango. When the family moved back to Mar del Plata in 1936, Piazzolla began playing for milongas (dance events), then got a job in Buenos Aires making tango arrangements. Hearing Arthur Rubinstein play at the Teatro Colon, he rushed home and wrote a concerto which he took to the great pianist. Rubinstein looked at it and said mildly, “Why don’t you study?”

Piazzolla took this new style home to Buenos Aires, this tango nuevo, and they hated it. Violently. They said he had destroyed the Argentine tango. The truth was that traditional tango was as old-fashioned as the Charleston. Though rejected in Argentina, he was hailed everywhere else. During the years of military dictatorship in Buenos Aires, Italy became his base. The quintet format of violin, guitar, piano, bass and bandoneόn became a preferred canvas. Piazzolla innovated constantly, improvising within passacaglia, introducing dissonance and chromatic harmony, even fugue. In Paris he teamed with Gerry Mulligan. He composed for Rostropovich. Heart surgery could not stop him, he toured unceasingly, and always returned home, where the pendulum eventually swung his way. Today, Barenboim and Argerich play Piazzolla, but so they should: what would really make him smile is the Latvian Gidon Kremer’s passionate advocacy, ranking his music alongside that of Gubaidulina and Kancheli. “It will have the perfume of my land,” Piazzolla once said. “I am Argentinian”. The Eras of Jazz, Classic Jazz and Ragtime An Imprecise précis by Keith Pettigrew and Jeannie McInnes Illustration by Istock/CSA-Archive

The January edition of Fine Music broached the subjects of the sounds of jazz, some early jazz history, and the various jazz eras and styles. In this article, we will address some of the early jazz musicians (or ‘jass’ as it was first known). This is the music that Fine Music Sydney broadcasts every Sunday at midday in Classic Jazz and Ragtime with Dave Mac, Jeannie McInnes and Maureen Meers.

Ragtime is typified by tightly scored, formally structured piano pieces. Some scholars consider that it was not intended for dancing. By contrast, Classic Jazz embraced the energy of West Africans, influenced by European light classics, often adapting popular melodies, hymns, work songs, and the Blues. Ragtime emerged from marches, waltzes and traditional songs, with the key characteristic of syncopation, and was dominated by piano. Classic Jazz grew from brass bands that performed for parties and dances, often based around instruments salvaged from the Confederate War, including clarinet, sax, trombone, tuba, banjo, drums and occasionally the piano.

Ragtime and Classic Jazz are two somewhat overlapping periods at the beginning of jazz from the 1890s. While Ragtime is thought to have originated in Missouri, Classic Jazz principally originated in New Orleans, although there was jazz in Kansas City and Chicago. These were transport hubs, bringing people, their employment, their entertainment, and their music together.

That term ‘syncopation’; what is it? As humans, we normally look for regular patterns in life and music. Syncopation is when that beat is shifted mid-stream, with a changed emphasis and, when done well, creating intrigue.

‘Ragtime’ may well come from the music being described as ragged. But certainly, the first Ragtime song was published in 1895 by Ben Harney. And in 1899, a classically trained young pianist from Missouri named Scott Joplin published the first of many Ragtime compositions. Joplin was regarded as the King of Ragtime, but he was not alone, with Joseph Lamb and James Scott being notable. Indeed, Igor Stravinsky composed ragtime.

and Sidney Bechet. While from Kansas City came Bennie Moten’s Orchestra (later led by Count Basie), Paul Whiteman Orchestra, James P Johnson, Eddie Lang, Albert Ammons, and Jabbo Smith. Of these, it was King Oliver who taught Louis Armstrong, got him a job with Kid Ory, and then drew him to Kansas City. Armstrong is credited with establishing the solo within a band’s performance, although Sidney Bechet preceded him and not until the mid-1920s. Why is Fats Waller not in this list? For many, he is the cusp of Ragtime, Dixieland and Swing, so more of him next time.

Classic Jazz followed in the 1900s and 1910s. Classic Jazz musicians from New Orleans including King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, Jelly-Roll Morton, Henry Allen, Kid Ory,

If you are looking for tracks that typify the period, check out • Ben Harney’s You’ve Been a Good Old Wagon But You Done Broke Down • Jelly-Roll Morton’s Red Hot Peppers playing Black Bottom Stomp • Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines playing Weather Bird, one of the most remarkable duets ever • King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band playing Dipper Mouth Blues • Sidney Bechet’s rendition of Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag • Bennie Moten’s Orchestra with Moten Swing There are many renowned musicians, some maturing with the early style of the 1890s, others transitioning from the classic jazz and ragtime styles ending in the mid-1920s into the Dixieland and swing styles of the next jazz era and beyond, testament to the emerging styles of jazz. Here is a list of key jazz musicians of this era, with their dates of birth, sorted by the period over which they were performing: • Scott Joplin (b.1868, performing 1895-1917)

• James P Johnson (b.1894, performing 1912-1955)

• Ben Harvey (b.1872, performing 1895-1925)

• Eddie Lang (b.1902, performing 1918-1933)

• Jelly-Roll Morton (b.1890, performing 1900-1941)

• Jabbo Smith (b.1908, performing 1918-1980)

• James Scott (b.1885, performing 1901-1938)

• Louis Armstrong (b.1901, performing 1919-1971)

• Paul Whiteman (b.1890, performing 1907-1960)

• Albert Amnons (b.1907, performing 1920-1949)

• Joseph “King” Oliver (b.1881, performing 1908-1937) • Earl “Fatha” Hines (b. 1903, performing 1920-1983) • Joseph Lamb (b.1887, performing 1908-1960)

• Bennie Moton (b.1894, performing 1923-1935)

• Sidney Bechet (b.1897, performing 1908-1957)

• William “Count” Basie (b.1904, performing 1924-1984)

• Edward “Kid” Ory (b.1873, performing 1910-1966)

• Henry “Red” Allen (b.1908, performing 1924-1967)

Why do people love the classic and ragtime eras so much? The music is full of toe-tapping rhythms, individual interpretations, fascinating harmonies, surprising changes and additions - music that leaves me feeling better for having heard it, and better for having it as part of my day.

Australian Chamber Orchestra - Richard Tognetti, conductor ABC Classics ABC 481 9892 There was clearly something about symphony writing which frightened Johannes Brahms, for he wasn’t to attempt his first one until he’d reach the age of 43. Thereafter he wrote four, each of them very different from their peers. In this age of Spotify, it’s pleasing that the ABC and ACO have joined forces to produce a new in-your-hand CD of Brahms’s 3rd and 4th symphonies. And as one might expect, the quality is high. It’s probably true to say that the 3rd Symphony in F major is probably the least popular of Brahms’ symphonic quartet with its odd mixture of heroism and formality, but Tognetti keeps the

ACO bubbling along and the second theme in the opening movement is a beautiful melody pulsating with warmth. Whenever I hear the opening movement of the 4th symphony I cannot help hearing the words of the renowned 19th century music critic Edward Hanslick, who, on first hearing it, remarked: “I had the feeling that I was being given a beating by two incredibly intelligent people” or words to that effect. That aside, there’s no doubt that by the time he’d got to his fourth, Brahms had thoroughly mastered the art. A great inclusion this CD in any collection. - Michael Morton-Evans

Schubert: Die Schöne Müllerin

David Greco, baritone; Erin Helyard, piano ABC Classic 481 8741 There are many recordings of Schubert’s song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin, and any survey of the history of recorded music will find examples of many kinds of singing and piano stylings. In this new recording from ABC Classic, Erin Helyard and David Greco bring a nuanced understanding of historical performance practice to Schubert’s cycle of songs of unrequited love, obsession and despair. In bringing these songs to the audience again, Greco and Helyard utilise expressive techniques of the 1820s and choose a piano that is a replica of one made by Anton Graf in

about 1819. The sound of the piano is arresting and rhythmically assertive, which is apt given that the piano takes the role of the stream throughout Schubert’s cycle. The disc demonstrates Helyard’s ongoing musical research and the illuminating notes to the recording are well worth reading. Greco’s singing is fine throughout and with every word of the German understood. A fine recording from two specialists in the field of historically informed performance practice. - James Nightingale

Let’s Get Serious Gemma Sherry Tunley Records

In a world in desperate need of happy music, the arrival of a new recording from the USA-based Australian vocalist Gemma Sherry capably revives one’s soul with a vocal elixir. The album, a collection of joyful, familiar songs, brings on board a band of standout musicians. It includes Grammy nominated guitarist Paul Bollenbeck, pianist Rick Germanson, and George Coleman Jr. on drums as the core of the cadre, with vibraphonist Joseph Doubleday and double bassist Eric Wheeler welcomed to brighten the musical palette. Sherry’s vocal qualities shine on the slow tempo numbers Try

Your Wings and Go Away Little Boy, delivered with a sumptuous vibrato. Other well-known song inclusions stand the test of time, as classics do, and the lesser-known ones, The Gentleman is a Dope, and The Alley Cat Song are real gems shining amongst this bejewelled collection. Sherry polishes them up vocally and transports them on a skilful new outing embellished with style and fun. Enjoy it by the pool with a martini, or by the fire with a glass of red. You won’t be disappointed with the sonic satisfaction this album delivers. - Barry O’Sullivan

CD REVIEWS Penelope Thwaites: From Five Continents: Choral Music and Songs

Ex Cathedra/Jeffrey Skidmore; Carolyn Sampson; James Gilchrist; William Dazeley; Penelope Thwaites SOMM SOMMCD 0612 Thwaites is concerned with matching About 40 years ago I came across an LP style to subject; the critic John Amis by Penelope Thwaites. It contained works described her as “a composer with a for piano by six Australian composers, gift for hummable tunes and songs that all of whom, like her, had lived in Britain are elegantly wrought”. The major work for a period of time. For her, this heralded here is a Missa Brevis. It is accompanied a lifetime engagement with the music by settings of psalms and of poetry of Percy Grainger. I wasn’t aware until by Shakespeare, her father Michael the release of this CD, however, that Thwaites, and others. I particularly Thwaites also composed. Her resumé enjoyed the obligato violin in the encompasses works for a wide range of setting of Psalm 19, the joyful folk-style forces, but here we are treated to vocal arrangement of Walkabout, and the music – both choral and solo – composed constantly varied vocal and instrumental in various locations and reflecting her colours. peregrinations as performer, writer and listener. Thwaites has succeeded admirably in her goal of composing music that in her own words, “has a unique role”. - Paul Cooke

Descansado Norma Winstone ECM CHAN 20169

The career of English vocalist Norma Winstone has spanned almost sixty years, and includes over 40 recordings and extensive collaborations with England’s finest jazz musicians of that period. Often Winstone’s choice of material has involved her writing lyrics to compositions of others. The focus of her most recent release Descansado is the theme music from twelve cinema classics of the past including Romeo & Juliet, Il Positino, Taxi Driver, Henry V, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Pride and Prejudice.

47

The recording’s appeal is due firstly to new arrangements, written mainly by Glauco Venier, which breathe new life into the music and secondly to new and intimate lyrics written by Winstone for six of the pieces. The album highlight is the title track, the English translation for which is Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. It comes from Vittorio de Sica’s 1963 classic leri, ozzi, domani. - James Nightingale

LISTENERS' LETTERS No Gouda

In Bega, on the South Coast, there is a radio station that plays rock music on the FM band at 102.5. Sometimes atmospheric conditions are such that you can receive the station in Leura. It’s very disturbing. - Joe Goozeff

Drumm Roll

Friday 15/01/2021 Last piece of music on program Beside The Seashore Trial 1 Mr Bojangles from Einstein on the Beach 1975 by the Phillip Glass Ensemble was awful, and sounded as if the CD was stuck. Lady not happy. Also lady is a BIG FAN of Annabelle Drumm and her Friday morning program Fine Music Breakfast. Loves listening to her and is a great way to start the day.

Victorious

Congratulations to Vicky on her inaugural solo broadcast today. Calm, confident and delightful to listen to. Look forward to more!

After four years working in this extremely demanding but rewarding role as General Manager at Fine Music Sydney my family and I have decided it is time for a sea change! Although I am sad to leave the station where I have implemented so many strategies and delivered so many projects over the last 4 years, I am looking forward to a relocation to the Sutherland Shire. I am also very happy to be moving onto an exciting new senior management position within a larger not for profit and animal welfare organisation, as the Head of Marketing and Fundraising at Sydney Dog and Cats Home. I am proud to have led an extremely diverse team of staff and volunteers through a significant period of change management while under enormous amounts of pressure and difficult circumstances over the last year. As always, I admire the collective dedication and passion of our volunteers who make Fine Music Sydney operate around the clock. But I of course want to acknowledge the hard work and at times creative genius of our extremely overqualified, and collaborative staff team. Fine Music Sydney really would not be here without the dedication of our staff, volunteers and of course the support or you our stakeholders, subscribers and loyal listeners! For that I thank you all Regards, Rebecca Beare, General Manager
