Schubert’s 8th Symphony: An unfinished masterpiece

While there are others, including fragments of a Beethoven Tenth, there are three unfinished symphonies which may be seen as standing out from the crowd: Schubert’s Eighth, Bruckner’s Ninth, and Mahler’s Tenth. Bruckner and Mahler both died while working on their symphonies, while Schubert lived on for six years a er stopping work on his Eighth, by mid-November 1822 at the latest. The first two movements had been completed, along with twenty bars of the scherzo, at which point its composi on was interrupted and never returned to.

One sugges on is that he was later unable to recover the work’s sense of unity. The fact that in 1823 he gave the score away uncondi onally as a token of gra tude to his friend Anselm Hϋ enbrenner may support this idea.

There are numerous other theories about why work on the symphony was abandoned. One of them points to Schubert’s feelings of uncertainty in composing instrumental music during the years

04

1818 to 1822, when he le twice as many incomplete fragments as he did complete larger instrumental works.

Another sugges on is that this uncertainty stemmed from his confronta on with Beethoven’s instrumental music, for which he had a profound respect, perhaps even awe. Although they never met, there’s li le doubt that Schubert quite venerated the older man, so much so that his first significant instrumental work to appear in print, a set of varia ons for piano duet issued in April 1822, is inscribed: “Dedicated to Herr Ludwig van Beethoven by his devoted worshipper and admirer.”

A further theory suggests that Schubert may well have considered the symphony sufficiently finished with the first two movements for him to dispense with the usual four movement format, although this theory is on rather shaky ground, there being no evidence that Schubert ever contemplated developing a new kind of symphony in two movements. However, there is consensus among cri cs that in this symphony there is something quite new, not only in Schubert’s composi ons, but for all music. As George Grove wrote in 1900, “In no other piece of music, perhaps, is the feeling so en rely produced that one has been in communica on with the very person of the composer, himself.” One may add that Schubert repeated this communion in several movements of his masterly Death and the Maiden quartet, composed in 1824 a er he realised that the illness he was suffering from was terminal.

Of the work’s two completed movements, Grove described the first as ‘full of agita on and distress’, while the second ‘dreams of the pastures of the blessed’. The symphony overall was interpreted as ‘a certain premoni on of death and a vision of heaven’, albeit that Schubert’s fatal illness did not emerge ll very late in 1822, a er he’d stopped working on the symphony.

As might be expected, there have been various a empts to complete it, star ng with its second performance, in Vienna on December 17, 1866, when the finale of his Third Symphony in D was added. Then in 1928 the Columbia Record Company considered offering a prize for the best comple on of it, but then replaced this with a prize for the best new symphony a er the manner of Schubert, won by the Swedish composer Kurt A erberg with his Symphony no. 6 in C, opus 31.

Readers interested to learn more about this outstanding work may wish to consult Mar n Chrusid’s book: Schubert: Symphony in B Minor (“Unfinished”).

Unperformed ll thirty-seven years a er his death, Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ today is amongst the most frequently played in the en re orchestral repertory.

He Came, He Sor, He Conquered

Michael Morton-Evans looks at the intriguing life of the 19th century’s greatest guitarist, Fernando Sor. he

St Valen ne’s Day, 14 February 1778, saw the birth in Barcelona of Josep Fernando Macari Sor, arguably the most important player, teacher, and composer for the guitar in its 19th century Golden Age. Not only was he a musical genius, he was also the supreme pragma st, as we shall shortly see.

Sor’s musical life began as a choirboy in a local monastery where legend has it that he wrote his first full mass, though no record of it has yet been found. As a teenager he studied at the military academy in Barcelona, and at 19, produced his first opera, Telemachus on the Isle of Calypso. Ironically, Telemachus in Greek means ‘far from ba le’, something which shortly was to be far from the truth for the young man.

At first, he was offered a job as court organist to the Duchess of Alva and music teacher to her children, which suited him just fine because he was, by all accounts, par al to the high life. But this agreeable musical life came crashing down when Napoleon’s French army suddenly invaded Spain, and Sor, who had le the military academy as a trained officer, was immediately put in charge of a troop of soldiers. It wasn’t long, however, before he realised that the French were going to win, and it was now that his pragma sm manifested itself. He abandoned the Spanish army and accepted a post with the occupa on government, doing exactly what, history doesn’t record.

This move, as one might expect, had seriously compromised Sor in Spain, so when the invading French were driven out of the country by Britain’s Duke of Wellington, he retreated with the French army over the Pyrenees and ended up in Paris, where he established himself as a concert guitarist.

Never happy in one place for too long, Sor le Paris a er two years for London where he became a favourite of one of King George III’s sons, under whose auspices a fad developed for his songs and guitar pieces. He then added ballet to his repertoire, and his Cendrillon (Cinderella) of 1822 became the most popular ballet of its me. It’s believed that this was the first ballet to be produced by the fledgling Bolshoi Ballet company in 1823 with Sor there to see it.

The Russians loved it and him, and Sor decided to stay in Russia for the next three years, before returning to Paris, where he spent the rest of his life. He died there in 1839, aged 61, and although some reports say that he died in poverty, largely forgo en by the musical world, the more likely event was that he spent the rest of his days teaching the guitar and wri ng copious amounts of music for the instrument.

Nowadays we know Fernando Sor solely for his guitar music. Sadly, all his other works, including ballets, string quartets, symphonies, and masses, have disappeared.

World of a Symphony: Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8

“A great tragic ballad of our terrible mes, an epic and anguished song expressing the boundless ordeals of a human heart,” wrote musicologist Boris Asafyev about the Symphony No. 8 in C minor opus 65 by

Shostakovich composed his Eighth Symphony in 1943 during World War Two. The war years represented rela ve freedom for ar sts living in the Soviet Union as it became acceptable to depict grief and devasta on. In his disputed but reliable memoirs Tes mony, Shostakovich wrote; “And then the war came, and the sorrow became a common one. We could talk about it, we could cry openly, cry for our lost ones. People stopped fearing tears…Even before the war, in Leningrad there probably wasn’t a single family who hadn’t lost someone, a father, a brother, or if not a rela ve, then a close friend. Everyone had someone to cry over, but you had to cry silently, under your blanket, so that no one would see. Everyone feared everyone else, and the sorrow oppressed and suffocated us. It suffocated me too. I had to write about it, I felt that it was my responsibility, my duty. I had to write a requiem for all those who died, who had

suffered. I had to describe the horrible extermina on machine and express protest against it … the Seventh and Eighth symphonies are my requiem.”

The Eighth Symphony is sha ering in its impact. This great tragic symphony is built on contrasts between music at mes violently intense and at others unremi ngly bleak. It is a symphony of agonised despair, which tries to escape the burden of unspoken anguish, only to remain trapped in the mire of suffering. It is a shocking symphony not only about the me of war but of peace me tragedy.

As the composer recounts in Tes mony; “The war brought much new sorrow and much new destruc on, but I haven’t forgo en the terrible pre-war years. That is what all my symphonies, beginning with the Fourth, are about, including the Seventh and Eighth.” Shostakovich goes on to say that “The majority of my symphonies are

08

tombstones. Too many of our people died and were buried in places unknown to anyone, not even their rela ves. I’m willing to write a composi on for each of the vic ms, but that’s impossible, and that’s why I dedicate my music to them all.’’

In the penul mate movement the symphony shi s from C minor to C major. A violinist in the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Yakov Milkis, commended the composer for this transi on and recounts Shostakovich replying to him; “My dear friend, if you only knew how much blood that C major cost me.” Shostakovich was silent and Milkis was le with the feeling he had “touched on something very sacred and private.”

However, the change to C major, associated with a journey from darkness to light, does not represent victory in the Eighth Symphony, rather there is an emp ness in the final movement which suggests survival.

Boris Asafyev captures the mood; “Suddenly, in the hush there is one lonely heart alive and bea ng that sings fluently and tenderly, as a bo omless spring streaming through the rocks of a craggy mountain cliff: ‘I am alive.’”

In his Eighth Symphony, a profoundly moving explora on of human suffering, Shostakovich showed himself to be the tragic poet of 20th century music.

High Five: Pianist/Composer

Felix Bornholdt

10

Felix Bornholdt is a New Zealand pianist and composer. An ac ve figure in the Australian improvised music scene, Felix is also a member of the pop band Lime Cordiale and spends much of each year touring in the USA, Europe, and UK. His debut solo piano record, Man Overboard was released in June 2023.

What early childhood musical experiences and memories led you to play the piano?

Growing up, my dad played records in the house from waking un l bed; it was a wide selec on with a lot of ECM, Bach, Gregorian chant, Palestrina masses, and then some seriously out-there recordings by groups like the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Don Cherry, and Pharaoh Sanders. If there was a unifying feature, it was all fairly fringe music and always cranked at high volume. Hearing Keith Jarre ’s Köln Concert for the first me was a huge moment for me. I have memories of trying to play it for friends in high school and ran ng about all the mythology surrounding it – the fact that he hadn’t slept for days, had to drive, nearly didn’t make the gig, then the piano was the wrong one and the gig almost didn’t happen! They were uninterested, but that record more than anything made me want to become a pianist.

What have some of the highlights of your musical journey been so far?

When I moved from Wellington to Sydney, I felt like I had just arrived in New York. I was going out nearly every night and hearing people like Mike Nock, The Catholics, and Sandy Evans – the people that I had admired all through high school. It was totally intoxica ng and deeply inspiring. As part of the pop world, I’m overseas on tour for about four months each

year. There are some enormous highs in playing shows in places with such a deep musical history as London and New York, and the general pinch-me-ness of somehow ge ng to see so much of the world by being a pianist.

You are well-versed in a variety of musical genres, what does jazz mean to you?

I was on tour in the US a few months ago and stopped by the gallery Corbe vs Dempsey in Chicago. A couple of weeks earlier I’d been in New Zealand, and the saxophonist Peter Brötzmann had just died. My dad, uncle and I had been listening to some of his music and leafing through a book of his graphic design work. He did a lot of album covers and posters, including the cover for his own record Nipples, which is the only record produced by Manfred Eicher that doesn’t appear on the ECM label. I walked into the office of this gallery in Chicago, and that same book was open on a desk. When I men oned this to Mr. Corbe , he pointed to a chair on which Peter Brotzman’s saxophone case was si ng. They had been conduc ng their own Brotzman memorial on the other side of the world. We talked for an hour or so; these guys had an encyclopedic knowledge of all this improvised music that had been coming out of New Zealand in the 80s and 90s – in Chicago!

I men on this because it gave me a profound sense of jazz being this strange global community, Black American music that has had a very deep and las ng interna onal influence.

What is your latest musical project and how did it evolve?

I’ve just released my first solo piano recording, Man Overboard. In part, it is a collec on of works that are thinking about living and making music in the South Pacific. When I was in school, I was part of a two-week expedi on, ini ated by the Sir Peter Blake Trust, to the Kermadec Islands, which is a remote volcanic region three days sail North from New Zealand. An experience like that changes how you see yourself in the world and in this case, it got me thinking a lot about water and about living in what are aqua c na ons.

You are home alone on a Sunday evening and want to relax listening to some of your favourite music. What would you choose?

I’ve always been enamoured with the sound and format of the solo piano. There’s a record by the pianist Jon Balke called Warp which is solo piano with strange threads of electronics running behind it. I’m also completely unable to escape Glenn Gould’s Goldberg Varia ons; I love them both – the ‘55 recording for the morning and the ‘81 for the evening. There’s also a curious recording by h hunt called Playing Piano for Dad that I find oddly compelling; it’s almost like listening to someone prac sing, or being recorded covertly. Some mes he stops in the middle of a piece, and you hear the chair creaking, or some faint words being spoken off-mic. It’s startlingly in mate and very beau ful.

Keith Pe grew talks to Alex Siegers about the Weatherley Scholarship and all things Jazz

Alex Siegers sings. She sings jazz, a capella, and sacred music; oh, and jazz. She also works as an educator, conductor, vocal arranger, arts administrator, arts marketer, and music librarian. And she is a jazz presenter on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. Many fingers and many pies.

In 2021, Alex was awarded the 2MBS Ken Weatherley Jazz Scholarship that, a er a slightly tortured and Covid-struck pathway, is about to come to frui on. March 2024 will see the release of her debut album, recorded in our Founders Studio as part of the Scholarship.

Alex started singing as a child. A favourite was Zombie by the Cranberries. There are a couple of canonical family videos of her singing: Waltzing Ma lda in the backyard as a 2-year-old, and Supercalifragilis cexpialidocious at pre-school. Then Year One choir when in kindergarten.

Life takes its own path, and Alex emerged at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, comple ng her Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Arts. In 2015, she went on an interna onal exchange to the University of California, recording a deligh ul a capella-style project with Jon Nathan.

So welcome 2021. Despite travelling far and wide, and living overseas mul ple mes, Alex was drawn back to Australia. While not overly patrio c, she recognises Australia’s natural beauty, egalitarian spirit, and even lovable larrikinism; all so magne c. “From Cockerawombeeba Creek near Wauchope NSW, to Tangambalanga VIC, just past Yackandandah and Baranduda; our ny na ve bees and our towering tallowwoods; our art, literature and design, kitsch, and the classic. Love it all. We have a deep and complex history, and so many incredible stories to share,” she says. And there is an Aussie jazz canon that is as diverse and exci ng.

Alex’s Weatherley project

While Alex was studying with Kerrie Biddell at the Sydney Conservatorium, Tim Nikolsky released the first itera on of the Australian Jazz Real Book (AJRB), and the whole history of Australian jazz music was at her finger ps. However, many of the recordings of these classic tunes aren’t readily available, and of the few held in physical library collec ons, are only available for listening in person.

Alex’s project was to record some of this great Australian jazz, otherwise lost to listeners. She selected music spanning 60 years of Australian jazz history from the 1950s to 2010s, by women and men, instrumentalists and vocalists, each composi on a li le piece of Australiana. As well as music wri en by jazz musicians, she included two selec ons from the Australian classical canon

12

reimagined as jazz tunes, one by Carl Vine and one by Elena KatsChernin, important pieces in her own musical development.

The Scholarship provided funds for hire of the 2MBS Founders Studio and recording with 2MBS sound engineer, Jayson McBride. She drew together musicians she knew who had worked together, par cularly with a singer, and who were at home in the ‘standard’ jazz world, given the tunes being championed. Drummer Andrew Dickeson has worked with so many greats of the Australian scene, and lots of great singers. Pianist Aaron Blakey was a well-known performer from Alex’s me on the Conservatorium campus, and bassist Jacob Graham is a talented young player who was the last piece of the puzzle. Whilst developing the Weatherley project, she was on campus studying for an honours degree, which culminated with an outstanding thesis on the role of vibrato in jazz. During this me, she was mentored by Jo Lawry, who took her out of her crea ve and technical comfort zone, while Virna Sanzone coached her through the vulnerability of singing, and performing from the heart. These mentors gave Alex an addi onal perspec ve to bring to the project.

A fierce recording schedule led to 80 takes over two days, relying on a significant planning effort with arrangements and the interpre ve skills of the musicians. It was mixed by Richie B, a respected Sydney wizard, and mastered by Michael Lynch.

During the recordings, Dickeson suggested that the theme and spirit of the project might interest ABC Jazz, and so this album of Australian Jazz Standards has been picked up for release by ABC as part of its 2024 releases.

I asked her if the Weatherley Scholarship had contributed to her career path: “The money and support from 2MBS have been integral to this project happening,” she replied. “Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to record a debut jazz album. Having the on-site support and exper se of a place to record, a sound engineer and a hugely suppor ve jazz and administra ve team was what got this project over the line.”

The (Big) Band after Swing

The Swing Era was synonymous with dance. The 1930 Depression led to the collapse of the record industry, and radio emerged as the core entertainment. Big bands were broadcast to at-home dance par es. As big bands emerged from radio studios into dance halls following the Depression, so was born the Swing Era, its dance, and its big bands.

Death knocked at the door of the big US swing bands in December 1946; Woody Herman and seven other bands called it quits and let him in. This demise had been coming for some me. There is fairly universal agreement that the causes were a combina on of the effects of the war, the dra , petrol ra oning, midnight curfews, and the amusement tax of 20% on all night clubs that included dancing. To this should be added the lack of men to dance with.

Then there was the growing ennui amongst the musicians who were restricted by their band’s par cular ‘sound’, lack of solo opportuni es, and overworked harmonic formulae. Even when the bands did play, they were restricted from recording by the AFM (the musician’s union) from 19421944.

To these causes should be added the growing resistance of black musicians to the indigni es they had to suffer whilst on the road, and their desire to create their own more virtuosic music that allowed me for individual expression. They, and

an increasing number of younger white musicians, wanted to play music for listening, not dancing to.

This explana on is not exhaus ve. The rise of the crooner and the fading out of tradi onal dancing styles in favour of jive, and the expense of maintaining a large orchestra all played their part. Of course, ‘swing’ bands s ll existed, ‘cryovacked’ for an ageing audience.

Benny Goodman ran with pickup bands un l 1950, and the Glen Miller Orchestra was recons tuted in 1956. Some would include the con nued success and popularity of Count Basie and Duke Ellington, although Basie disbanded for a me in 1948, and again in 1950. But they never fi ed the swing formula, being at their hearts crea ve jazz bands.

Although there was a mainstream increase in small jazz groups, the line used to trace the development of non-swing bands can start with any number of musicians, arrangers, or composers. The ones proposed in this ar cle are not sacrosanct,

14

but it would be hard to exclude any of them.

Of immediate no ce is Claude Thornhill.

The Terre Haute pianist and arranger served his appren ceship with the bands of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller, played on early Billie Holiday recordings and with Ray Noble. He formed his own band in 1939 and used as its theme the former A Fountain in Havana, wri en for Noble and now re tled Snowfall.

His posi on as an inaugural post-swing bandleader was determined by the musicians that he gathered around him.

First came Gil Evans in 1941, whose arrangements built on the musical vision that was Thornhill’s own. This is best illustrated by their early collabora on on Buster’s Last Stand, described by Allen Lowe as ‘a bravura swinger unlike anything else of its me’.

Thornhill disbanded his orchestra in 1942 but re-established it at the war’s end. Evans returned and brought along in short order Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, and Red

Rodney. The band made some iconic bebop recordings including Anthropology, Robins Nest, and Donna Lee. All the musicians who played with Thornhill in this short-lived post-war band acknowledged their debt to him as a man who saw the future of jazz but respected its past.

Whilst Thornhill was working with one group of future icons, Woody Herman surrounded himself with another. In 1947 he formed the Four Brothers Band, also known as The Second Herd. Their saxophone sec on was Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff, Herbie Steward, and Stan Getz, while other musicians included Al Cohn, Gene Ammons, Lou Levy, Oscar Pe ford, and Shelley Manne.

Their sound is unmistakably ‘Big Band’ with mul ple instruments playing in unison. On recordings, each tune was sequestered within the typical 3-minute me frame required for the 78 rpm records. Clearly a big band sound, but without the edge of get-up-and-dance. There is no doubt that the arrangements have escaped the confinement of that which was Swing

Both ensemble and album are named a er a mountainous region on the polish-Slovak border. Two members of the Orava Quartet are of Polish heritage and grew up listening to Orawa, in which composer Wojciech Kilar realised his dream of ‘crea ng a piece inspired by a highlander band’. This release by the Brisbane-based quartet also features music by Schulhoff, Shostakovich and Australian Luke Howard. The opening work is Schulhoff’s String Quartet No 1, which has been described as a ‘highly drama c musical mystery tour’. While it shows an awareness of the experiments of both Schoenberg and Bartok, it also echoes Janácek in its ‘passionate alterna on of bursts of energy and spells of medita on’. Shostakovich is represented by the rarely

performed String Quartet No 6 – mostly tranquil in tone but with undercurrents of tension, it suggests the calm before the storm of his later symphonies and quartets. The program concludes with four short composi ons by Luke Howard. They are reminiscent of instrumental pieces by Arvo Pärt and in keeping with the mood of the final movements of the quartets which precede them. While Hymn has been praised for its beauty, I found Andamooka Sta on to be the most evoca ve.

What makes this debut album from Alex Siegers so fascina ng is not just that it explores Australia’s heritage of jazz standards, or that it contributes to that jazz canon with style and grace, it is also an emo ve expression of a great voice. Alex has dived into the Australian Jazz Real Book: 60 years of Australian jazz history from the 50s, some 1700 Australian jazz tracks that speak to the diverse, the larrikin, and the sen mental. She has taken jazz tunes that are uniquely Australian, arranged some good stories, as well as contributed some fresh lyrics.

Alex’s voice is superbly ar culated, including within the sca ng and vocalese tracks. Her vocal presence is clear and works confidently with the piano of Aaron Blakey, the bass of Jacob Graham, and the drums of Andrew Dickeson. From the warmth of Spirit Song, the curious but intriguing story of the first Australian flight in Diggers Rest, to the La n influenced Intersec on, this is an album of sublime skill and adventure. It is Alex’s postcard to the world, From Here.

The solo piano recording is always challenging for the ar st. Firstly, finding the right piano and then the perfect space to record in, hoping that space, piano and me will harmoniously all come to frui on exactly as planned. Bornholdt was fortunate to find a Steinway Model D Grand in the perfect space at the Independent Theatre, Sydney, and the right me to record. On his solo debut, he lures his listeners into his web as he blends superb technique into the expanse of his crea vity. Something is dazzling about his touch. Space and me rework into a melodic dance, atonality sings beside formal structure, and harmony strikes a rich chord. Bornholdt never ceases to be inven ve with his eleven original composi ons beau fully engineered and mixed by Ross A’Hern. With sumptuous cover artwork by John Pile, a bonus insert artwork by Brendan O’Brien,

and inspira on and composi on tles connected to a nau cal voyage Bornholdt par cipated in as a youth of fi een to the remote volcanic island of Raoul, this package is occasionally mysterious, always shimmering, and complete. Standout tracks abound – Palais Waipapa, What Was It That Woke You and Credo – all are glorious gems. But there is much more to behold throughout this poe cally ar culated and courageously well-executed impressive musical offering. A vinyl and digital release that comes highly recommended

Volunteer Profile: David Edmonds

Laurie Smith talks to 2MBS Fine Music Sydney’s Work Health and Safety officer.

David, what brought you to 2MBS as a volunteer? What roles have you had at the sta on?

I’ve listened to 2MBS since the late 1970s and delivered this magazine to subscribers from the early 2000s un l hand delivery concluded a few years ago. I then assisted Elaine Siversen, transcribing LP notes to CD format as the sta on began to digi se its library, and with Sue Ping-Kee, entering new CDs into the library data base.

Around 2010, I joined a new safety policy commi ee under Sue Nicholas, ini a ng and upda ng safety procedures. Since 2017 I have been on the WHS Commi ee as Secretary, and more recently, Chair. In these la er roles I have drawn more directly on aspects of my professional experience: the iden fica on and mi ga on of safety hazards and compliance with regulatory requirements. (I had re red from my career in the pharmaceu cal industry in 2017 where I had worked in R&D, manufacturing. tes ng and regulatory roles.)

Adjunct to my professional work I was ac ve in the Royal Australian Chemical Ins tute which provided useful background for my contribu ons as a volunteer at 2MBS.

Where does your love of music come from?

My parents were not concert goers, so the sources of my interest are unknown. My earliest musical recollec on is listening to a 2SM Sydney kids’ show that was always introduced by the gallop of the Willam Tell overture and finished with the Angelus, preceded by the Schumann-Liszt Widmung. I learned the piano and flute in school years but did not progress to any significant playing competence.

I a ended school concerts by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in the mid ‘50s and took out subscrip ons to SSO Youth concerts for some 10 years. I have subscribed to Opera Australia since 1977 and the SSO orchestral and piano recitals since the early ‘90s.

I started to collect classical LPs in the late ‘50s. This accelerated with memberships of the World Record and Australian Record Clubs, and I s ll collect CDs to this day, in par cular, reissued recordings from the ‘golden decade’ from 1955 to 1965. My bookshelves also reflect these interests.

What music do you enjoy the most?

All good quality music from Monteverdi to the modern day. I have no pet hates, although it took me a while to enjoy Brahms and even longer to like and enjoy Puccini.

Are there performances or recordings that stay forever in your memory?

I’ve been fortunate to have a ended many memorable performances over the years: Donald Smith and Lauris Elms in Il Trovatore in 1964, Tristan und Isolde under Carlos Kleiber in 1976, Ashkenazy playing Chopin op 25 Etudes in his 20s, Bryn Terfel performing Falstaff for Opera Australia in the ‘90s, and not least the recent OA Brisbane Ring cycle. Regarding recorded works, those of Sir Thomas Beecham and Fritz Reiner and, despite limited sound, Toscanini’s Verdi Requiem, Otello and Falstaff are among my favourites.

Harmonia Mundi HMC 902119.20 2:16 Marenka learns that her parents have planned a rich marriage for her, suggested by the marriage broker Kecal, who proposes Vasek, the second son of Tobias Micha. His rst son had left home years before because of his stepmother and he is now presumed dead. Marenka, having promised to marry the penniless Jenik, refuses to acknowledge the contract. Vasek, shy and stuttering, has been sent to woo Marenka, whom he does not know, so she takes the opportunity to warn him that his prospective bride will lead him a dance, frightening him off. Kecal offers to buy off Jenik, who agrees to accept the money offered and renounce Marenka on condition that no one will marry Marenka except a son of Micha. Everyone blames Jenik for giving up Marenka for money and Marenka is desolate. She signs the contract to marry Micha’s son. Unknown to all, Jenik is Micha’s eldest son. Eventually, Jenik’s identity is revealed. As Micha's son he is, by the terms of the contract, entitled to marry Marenka. When this becomes clear, Marenka understands his actions and embraces him.

The Duke of Mantua is to marry the Princess of Granada and her escort is to be paid three million in settlement of a debt the court of Mantua owes to the court of Granada. A band of brigands, led by Falscappa, is short of money. They take over the inn where the two parties are to meet and pose as the innkeepers. They capture the Mantuan envoys, and disguised in their clothing, receive the Princess and her courtiers, whom they also take prisoner. In Mantua, the Duke’s treasurer has embezzled the three million. The fake envoys arrive and the Duke recognises Falscappa’s daughter, Fiorella, who once saved his life. When Falscappa demands the money, the treasurer is evasive. Falscappa realises that the money does not exist and becomes enraged. The real envoys from Granada arrive and the plot is revealed. Fiorella reminds the Duke of his debt to her and he allows the brigands to go free.

Vale

13:00 IN

The gamekeeper catches the vixen in the wood and takes her home. Rejecting the advances of the family dog, she tries to rouse the hens to revolution, then kills them and escapes. Now notorious, she is spotted by villagers walking home from the pub, but evades the gamekeeper's gun. She meets a fox and has a litter of cubs, before being shot by a poacher. Returning to the clearing where he rst caught the vixen, the gamekeeper sees one of her cubs and is reminded of the great cycle of life.

A political prisoner, the nobleman Alexander Petrovich Goryanchikov, arrives at a Siberian prison camp and is ogged after being interrogated by the Commandant. The prisoners have found an eagle with a broken wing and begin to tease it. They admire its de ance and decide to look after it. As various prisoners relate the crimes that have brought them to Siberia, Goryantchikov is dragged in, near death, after his ogging.

After recovering, Goryanchikov befriends a young Tartar, Alyeya, and teaches him to read and write. A prisoner, resentful of Goryanchikov having the means to buy tea, attacks him, but Alyeya gets injured during the scuf e. In the prison hospital, Luka dies from tuberculosis and Shishkov recognises him as Filka who had boasted in their village that he had dishonoured Shishkov’s wife. Although this was a lie, Shishkov murdered his wife. Other prisoners recount their crimes. The Commandant informs Goryanchikov that he has been pardoned and apologises for the ogging. As Goryanchikov is freed, the prisoners release the eagle whose wing has now fully healed. The guard orders them back to work.

The Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro arrive in Venice from Spain with their daughter Casilda who, as a baby, was married to the son and heir of the King of Barataria. The infant prince was taken by Don Alhambra to Venice and, as the King has died, the hidden prince is now king. Casilda is now the reigning queen of Barataria but she is secretly in love with Luiz, their drummer. Don Alhambra explains that the prince was raised by the gondolier, Baptisto Palmieri, a drunkard, who eventually forgot which boy was his own son and which boy was the prince. The two boys, Marco and Giuseppe, are now gondoliers. They have just married Tessa and Gianetta respectively. Don Alhambra informs them that one of them is the King of Barataria, but no one knows which. The gondoliers agree to go to Barataria at once, acting as one individual until the actual king is identi ed. Don Alhambra neglects to mention that the King is married to Casilda. In Barataria, Don Alhambra breaks the news that one of the gondoliers had married Casilda when they were babies and therefore is an unintentional bigamist. The Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro arrive with Casilda and Luiz. Don Alhambra nds the nurse who cared for the young prince. She happens to be Luiz's mother. She hid the prince and gave Don Alhambra her own son instead. Thus, the king is neither Marco nor Giuseppe, but Luiz.

Casilda nds that she is already married to the man she loves and the two gondoliers surrender their crown to Luiz and, although a little disappointed that neither will be a king, they can return happily to Venice with their wives.
