Friday 30 April is International Jazz Day. An UNESCO initiative, it aims to bring together communities and jazz enthusiasts from all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, raising awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and reinforcing international cooperation. For our contribution, we will stream jazz back-to-back from 9am, and finish the day with a double dose of Jazz After Hours from 10 pm. Just head to FineMusicSydney.com/JazzDay for details and our streaming audio. I should emphasise that our normal FM and digital transmissions will be unaffected. This month’s issue marks the launch of our appeal for funds to enable us to move our transmitter from Governor Phillip Tower to a TV pylon in Artarmon. It will be spearheaded by Gerard Willems, who is the subject of our In Conversation article this month. We continue to fine tune our august journal by moving the Program Guide to the back of the magazine, keeping the articles together at the front. We hope you will agree that this is a more coherent format and welcome your comments. Lastly, we say farewell to Derek Parker, who has been a presenter at Fine Music Sydney for over 15 years, and a regular contributor to our magazine. Although he and his wife Julia will be returning to their native Britain, he has assured me that he will continue to program for Fine Music and write for the magazine via the magic of the InterWeb! He will be sorely missed! david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Paris, 1921 Nicky Gluch examines Fauré’s Piano quintet no 2 The film Midnight in Paris premises on the idea that each of us has an era to which we believe we were truly suited. Like the film’s protagonist, Gil, I have a hankering for the 1920s, happily imagining myself among the cafes of Paris, sipping coffee with Hemingway, studying music with Nadia Boulanger and attending the Ballet Russes in the evening (when I wasn’t at a jazz club, that is). The war had brought the world to Paris, soldiers who fought to defend France’s liberty and fell in love with her beauty, and Russians who sought to escape the ravages of revolution. On 17 May 1921, I could thus have attended the premiere of Prokofiev’s ballet Chou, a Russian tale fittingly backdropped by the sets of Mikhail Larionov, and then four days later stepped into the very French world of the Société Nationale de Musique. The Société had been founded 50 years earlier by Romain Bussine and Camille Saint-Saëns: early members saw themselves as a brotherhood of composers who wished to promote French music as its own voice against the dominant German tradition. Although Bussine had died in 1899, Saint-Saëns was still alive, and yet very much at odds with music’s evolution over the half-century. A traditionalist, he was disenchanted with both impressionism and dodecaphony, though had retained a friendship with his pupil Gabriel Fauré who is known as the man who brought the Paris Conservatoire into the 20th Century.

In the slow, third movement, it is the quartet which gets the first chance to speak. The piano enters in the eighth bar, anticipating the first violin’s melody, and later has the chance to sing its own tune, introducing the second theme. The final movement opens with a stripped back texture, the piano merely accompaniment to the viola’s tune. Layers build, as does the energy, a gradual accelerando taking the piece towards its climax. The end is loud, and assured, a bold C major that rings of triumph.
One wonders then what Saint-Saëns would have made of Fauré’s Piano quintet no 2, which premiered on 21 May to great acclaim. It was a work made possible by Fauré’s reluctant retirement from the Conservatoire in 1920, as the slow and contemplative composer who’d spent 18 years on his first quintet now had time to compose. The result is seamless: a score that honours all five voices and unfolds as if there was no other option for how it could sound.
It is a work undeniably of its time and yet perhaps best understood by looking backwards: our Sunday Special includes a quintet from the 1870s, when the Sociéte began, and one from the 1820s, perhaps Saint-Saëns’ golden age? As to which era suited Fauré, that we can only guess: his late quintet suggests he might have been a man temporally content!
In four movements, it is mighty, with its C minor tonality providing a sense of tension and urgency, emphasised by the low piano arpeggios which open the piece. The quartet, working in tandem rather than led by the first violin, criss-cross over each other to arrive at powerful moments of monophony. In the second movement, the piano and quartet begin to converse, echoing each other briefly before going their own way, once again.

In Conversation with Gerard Willems AM Catherine Peake talks to Gerard Willems about his music
Gerard Willems is best known as the Dutch-born pianist whose recordings of Beethoven’s piano works made him the best-selling classical musician in Australia. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Centenary Medal, and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012. He continues to perform and teach in Australia and internationally.
As one of Australia’s foremost concert pianists, you have performed and recorded the work of the First Viennese School extensively. What is it that draws you to this repertoire? Ever since my teenage years I have been fascinated with the music of the first Viennese School. What inspired me was a quote from the great German pianist Arthur Schnabel on being asked why he was so obsessed by the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert: ‘this music is so much better than you can ever play it’. This concept threw the challenge in my lap and I decided while still a teenager to make it my life’s passion. In my concerts I have always included some music from this period and I have grown as an artist with the depth of it. My feeling is that the formalism of Sonata and Rondo form, inherited from Haydn, gives the performer unlimited choices of interpretation. That appeals to me greatly. Fine artists can usually be identified by their interpretation of a Mozart slow movement of a sonata or concerto. Every note counts and this gives the performer a deep sense of responsibility. You have to sleep, eat and drink this music before you can play it. This great passion has created some fabulous recording possibilities for me, such as a 14-CD box set of Beethoven sonatas and concertos etc, and several CDs of the music of Mozart.

The pandemic completely changed the landscape during 2020 and into 2021. How have you managed the challenges and opportunities of this time?
Your role in teaching and working with young musicians has been and continues to be a significant part of your career. What are the highlights of your work in this area?
The COVID pandemic has had an effect on my performing life, but I have had the opportunity to give several digital concerts for the Melbourne Digital Concert Hall that has made it possible to present concerts all over the world. I have received congratulatory messages from as far away as USA, Norway, Germany, Netherlands and France. It is great to have taken part in this new technology where you literally have no contact with an audience. It is rather awe-inspiring as you’re not aware of who is listening. A new challenge!
It has been a privilege and joy to have imparted my philosophy and attitudes towards music to students at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for the past forty years. It is a very responsible task to inspire students so as not to disturb their basic talent, passion and above all enthusiasm. I have been lucky to have had students come to me from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Europe, the United States, and of course Asia. Each student has to be treated with a deep commitment to build on what they have already achieved. Several of my students have done well in national as well as international competitions, including the Vienna Musikverein Competition and the Carnegie Hall Piano Competition in New York. Some are now working in places such as UCLA, the Lyric Opera in Chicago and American Ballet Theatre, and some have performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. I also enjoy giving lectures to inspire people to gain confidence and perform under pressure, such as in the Executive Master of Business Administration course at the University of Sydney. That is a great pleasure.
What projects do you have planned for the future? The future is uncertain as it is difficult to know where the world is going, but I will continue to inspire and assist younger artists where I can and help them to achieve their goals in life. This year I will adjudicate in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod as well as in Wollongong. I retired in 2018 from my position at the Sydney Conservatorium but I am still well motivated to help where I can. I also have several concerts to prepare which makes me continue to grow and learn. Listening to music is my great joy, as is spending time with my three-year-old Clara. Life is wonderful!

The Siegfried of the Horn Derek Parker remembers Dennis Brain
His technique was formidable. He almost never ‘split’ a note: on one occasion when, unusually, it happened, von Karajan put down his baton and said, “Thank God!” In the 12 years left to him, Brain packed in a lifetime of stunning work. Composers, seduced by his tone and versatility, queued up to write works for him to perform: Britten, Tippett, Hindemith, Malcolm Arnold, Peter Racine Fricker, Gordon Jacob, Matyas Seiber, Humphrey Searle, Lennox Berkeley, Elisabeth Lutyens, and a number with less well-known names. Happily for everyone, he was a man with a remarkably sunny disposition – cheerfulness was his usual mood. He was always ready for a joke and one foolery was happily recorded: his performance of a Leopold Mozart horn concerto on a rubber hosepipe in one of the Hoffnung music festivals, pausing to achieve the correct tuning by trimming the hose with a pair of garden shears. His memory was notably fallacious: Britten once autographed two scores for him in case he lost one; and his favourite instrument, a French piston valve horn, was often mislaid, usually recovered with extra dents to its already damaged body. Sadly, in a way, Brain was a car buff. Someone looking over his shoulder during a recording session would see not the score of a Mozart symphony, but a copy of the latest auto magazine; he would be playing from memory.
Chronicle / Alamy Stock Photo
On 1 September 1957 he left Edinburgh in his Triumph sports car after playing at a Festival concert – the Tchaikovsky Pathetique Symphony, with the Philharmonia, under Eugene Ormandy. He was heading for London and a recording, next morning, of Strauss’ Capriccio under Wolfgang Sawallisch. The car met a tree on the A1, and Brain was killed outright. His badly battered horn was restored, and can be seen at the London Royal Academy of Music – a reminder of the man Beecham described as ‘the Siegfried of the horn’.
Brain was a legend among performers and for ten years had been the most sought-after horn player in Europe. Not altogether surprising, perhaps: the DNA announced him. His grandfather Alfred had been a great horn player at the turn of the century; his uncle Alfred took his horn successfully to Hollywood; and his father Aubrey was soloist in the first ever recording of a Mozart horn concerto. At 21, Dennis and his brother Leonard (an oboist) were playing in the Royal Air Force Symphony Orchestra and, at the same time, in Karl Haas’ London Baroque Ensemble. Forming the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Beecham announced that his first horn was “a prodigy”. He was, of course, Dennis Brain. It was at this time that Britten recognised Dennis’ quality and wrote the Serenade for him and Peter Pears. The recording sizzled in the ears of music-lovers all over Europe, and Brain’s reputation was made: at just 24!

Volunteer Spotlight Andrew Clark
Pamela Newling talks to Andrew about his involvement with Fine Music Sydney I was 16 when my German teacher in Perth in Scotland threw me out of the class and hands on hips, demanded to know why I was dropping her subject for Music. I wanted to study French and Music at university, I told her. “No way”, she said, a double degree in languages would serve me much better for a future career. So I took her advice and qualified as an interpreter. Before then I ended up on a university exchange program in East Germany in 1989 and saw the Berlin Wall come down, which made me think I should/could be a journalist. So I worked my way up the ranks at the BBC as their youngest ever news editor, then Aljazeera, and most recently SBS.
I still have a dream of playing
the third movement of Mozart’s
Horn concerto no 4 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
One rainy afternoon (during my first mid-life crisis) when the news agenda was getting on top of me, I drove past Fine Music Sydney (then 2MBS) and said to myself, that’s the great station I listen to! So I applied for a role presenting and 11 years on, I still love being on air. I’ve now given up the life of being a news executive doing crazy hours, because the news never stops, and I can spend more time focussing on my passion, classical music. I also get to produce programs and present Breakfast or Drive, but I do still wonder how the direction of my life would have changed had I studied music, having already started basic composition at school.

I know one thing, I most likely would have ditched the euphonium my brass teacher asked me to play for something like the French horn before going to uni – it was pretty much the only brass instrument he didn’t have me play! I still have a dream of playing the third movement of Mozart’s Horn concerto no 4 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Instead I’ll most likely just be playing the likes of Dennis Brain doing wonders with the instrument. Sunday Special 16 May 2021 3-5pm

Ralph Towner, one of a kind Robert Vale salutes the jazz guitarist, keyboardist, composer
American musician Ralph Towner was born in Washington State to musical parents and was improvising on the piano at three, as most children do. By age 22, he had completed advanced musical studies and was a relatively experienced performer, not as a guitarist but as a pianist and trumpet player, having adopted the piano played by his mother and his father’s trumpet. While studying composition in his final year at the University of Oregon, Towner realised that guitar offered him greater compositional possibilities and felt compelled to study that instrument. He spent an intensive two years in Vienna, studying under renowned teacher Karl Scheit while practising ten hours a day.
Towner first came to notice when he joined the Paul Winter Consort as a performer of his three instruments. He and colleagues Paul McCandless (woodwinds), Colin Walcott (sitar and tabla) and Glen Moore (double bass, viola, piano) then broke away from Winter to form the quartet Oregon, whose music was an East meets West fusion of jazz, classical and folk. It first performed in the early 1970s with compositions mainly provided by Towner and McCandless and has endured intermittently to the present day. Worthy of special mention is the acclaimed Oregon in Moscow, recorded in 2000 when the group played its own music while performing with the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. It recorded its 30th album in 2017.
Towner moved to New York in 1967, and although he continued to play piano and trumpet, his principal instrument was guitar. Crucially, though playing in a jazz setting, he used both the six-string finger-picking classical guitar and the twelve-string steel guitar. These instruments were usually confined to classical playing, producing a readily identifiable roundness and depth of sound not previously heard in jazz. He avoids amplification and is known to create a percussive effect by weaving a matchbox among the strings at the neck. Towner believes his success has been due to a combination of creating this sound coupled with extensive classical training, a love of jazz, and a quest to stretch its boundaries.
Towner secured a place in lunar history when in 1971 the Apollo 15 mission with his music on board named two lunar craters Icarus and Ghost beads using Towner’s musical titles. His recording career with the ECM label commenced with Diary in 1973 with 14 solo albums recorded by 2017. Towner points out that his entire back catalogue of 35 ECM recordings continue to be made available by ECM. A selection of Ralph Towner recordings will be featured on Jazz Sketches at 12 noon on Wed 19 May.

The Founder of French Grand Opera Elaine Siversen celebrates the career of Daniel Auber
When the opera La muette de Portici by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber was produced in Paris in 1828, it rapidly became a European favourite. Its grand marches, spectacular scenic effects, statutory ballet, varied and piquant musical textures, and the dramatic use of the chorus as a representative of the people, tell the story of a private drama in the context of a significant historical event. The opera, also known as Masaniello after its hero, was a foundation work of a new genre, the Grand Opera. Rossini consolidated this new form in the following year with his Guillaume Tell. Auber’s use of a ballerina in the leading role (the mute girl of Portici) was an innovation in the opera that included long passages of mime music. A rousing duet between a tenor and a baritone, Amour sacré de la patrie (Sacred love of the homeland), was responsible for inspiring an uprising of the Belgian populace that led to the revolution that drove the Dutch out of Belgium.
Auber was a diminutive man
who was too shy to conduct his own works and could not bear to hear them.
Auber’s father was a print-seller who taught his son to play some musical instruments which later led the young man to try his hand at composition. After a violin concerto was praised and performed at the Paris Conservatoire, he began to study with Luigi Cherubini. Several years of failure followed, with three of his operas being produced unsuccessfully between 1813 and 1819, as well a the loss of the print-selling business, inherited after his father’s death.
LA MUETTE DE PORTICI’ Act 5 scene 7 Chronicle / Alamy Stock Photo Photos by Andrew Scott
12
Auber persevered with music, and in 1820, his three-act opera La bergère chatelaine was a resounding success. It was the first in a long series of brilliant triumphs with Auber’s musical style developing into one that was light, vivacious, graceful and melodious. One of these successes was La muette de Portici which is still in the opera repertory today. Public appreciation of Auber’s work was supported by officials and dignitaries, and in 1829, Auber was elected as a member of the Institut de France. His greatest success, Fra Diavolo, premiered in the following year, during which he was named director of the court concerts. Three years later, Auber’s second Grand Opera, Gustave III, premiered to great acclaim, remaining in the repertory for many years. Other successes were Le cheval de bronze (1835), L’Ambassadrice (1836), Le domino noir (1837), Les diamants de la couronne (1841) and La part du diable (1843). Auber was a diminutive man who was too shy to conduct his own works and could not bear to hear them. He was a keen horseman and was famed for his mordant wit and epigrams. As a young man, he had a romantic liaison with a woman 20 years his senior, but he never married. In 1844, his greatest musical honour came when he was appointed Director of the Paris Conservatoire. During his time at the Conservatoire, he appointed Fromental Halévy to teach composition and he strengthened the departments of piano and orchestral instruments. He held this post until 1870 when the Conservatoire was converted into a hospital during the Franco-Prussian war. Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, born in 1782, died on 12 or 13 May 1871. We commemorate this 150th anniversary with broadcasts of a ballet, Marco Spada, and two operas, La muette de Portici and Le domino noir. Jazz – An Imprecise Précis Keith Pettigrew studies the Dixieland & Swing eras
The previous article in this series explored the Ragtime and the Classic Jazz eras (Sundays 12:00 noon on Fine Music Sydney). This pointed to a realisation of how traditions of one era became the foundation of the next, but that the transition is gradual and ephemeral. This article focusses on the Dixieland and Swing eras. You can listen to music of the Swing era with John Buchanan on Fine Music Swing Sessions (Mondays at 12:00 noon).
DIXIELAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA aka Original Dixieland Jazz Band about 1917 with Henry Ragas on piano. Pictorial Press Ltd / Alamy Stock Photo
Louis Armstrong is sometimes identified with Dixieland. His significant influence on jazz was emphasising the role of the solo performance, although this was pioneered by Sidney Bechet. Armstrong championed this aspect from the New Orleans style after he moved to Kansas City, which is not to diminish the quality and imagination of his contribution, which was of course legendary. What a trumpeter!
‘Dixieland’ refers to southern jazz, from the ‘Old South’. Specifically, it refers to the Mason-Dixon Line of 1767, which morally and socially divided colonial America between the Northern free states and the Southern slave states. In 1917, the Original Dixieland Jass Band was the first to have their music labelled as Dixieland, but the term did not stick. The music was essentially white Americans trying to capture the essence of traditional Classic Jazz out of New Orleans, and the genre only emerged with its revival in the mid-1940s.
For Dixieland music, listen to the Original Dixieland Jazz Band’s Dixie Jazz Band One-Step, Cab Calloway’s The Jumpin’ Jive, Fats Waller’s Honey Suckle Rose. And then there is Louis Armstrong’s When The Saints Go Marching In and Struttin’ with Some Barbeque (written by Armstrong’s wife Lil Hardin), Ted Lewis’s I’ve Found A New Baby and Muggsy Spanier’s Relaxin’ At The Touro.
For Afro-Americans, it is no term of endearment, as it represented the staccato playing of all-white groups, not the harmonic energetic music of AfroAmericans. Dixieland was characterised as a soloist (often trumpet) playing the melody, with other instruments harmonically improvising around that melody, based over a two-beat rhythm. The string bass also took the place of the tuba, with guitar replacing the banjo.
‘Swing’ in comparison, is book-ended by the Great Depression and the Second World War, perhaps taking centerstage with the Benny Goodman Orchestra performance in August 1935 at the Palomar Ballroom. Swing is synonymous with dance. The Depression had led to the collapse of the record industry, with audiences staying at home. The radio emerged as core entertainment, in some 90 per cent of American homes.
14
People would have at-home dance parties, dancing to the radio. NBC broadcast Let’s Dance coast-to-coast in 1934 featuring the Benny Goodman orchestra, which then embarked on a national tour to much acclaim. Dance halls and ballrooms opened across America and Swing was born, but the war put an end to dancing, with all the men called into service, and no-one to dance with. Swing was the pop music of the period, largely from the songwriters of Tin Pan Alley. This Manhattan area on West 28th Street was the home of many music publishers. Significant musicians included Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael although Benny Goodman and Fletcher Henderson became the dominant influence. The tunes were happy dance music, moving into 4:4 time; not toe-tapping, but whole-body swinging. They were simple, clear harmonic melodies, with a strong beat. At that time, dance was one hand clasped with a partner and the other on waist and shoulder. There were two elements to Swing, ‘hot numbers’ for the rhythmic excitement of
lindy-hopping and jitter-bugging, and ballads for the gentle cuddling of the foxtrot on the dance floor. Swing was the era of Glen Miller’s In The Mood, Artie Shaw’s Begin The Beguine, Tommy Dorsey’s Marie, Lionel Hampton’s Flying Home, Count Basie’s One O’Clock Jump, Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing, Duke Ellington’s Take The A Train & Cotton Tail, Louis Armstrong’s Mack The Knife, Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie’s On The Sunny Side Of The Street, and The Andrews Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Interestingly, Ellington was uncomfortable with Swing, preferring more contemplative and imaginative elements for listening rather than jitterbugging, being quoted as saying “Jazz is music. Swing is business.”

Live Performance Review Tessa Miles reviews Hamilton: An American Musical
Even if you don’t know what Hamilton is about, you surely have heard about it. The Tony, Grammy, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize winning musical has opened at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre – the only Hamilton production in the world currently performing - to thunderous applause.
In an unconventional style from typical musical theatre, Hamilton tells the story of America’s lesserknown Founding Father through rap, hip-hop, R&B, pop, soul and traditional-style show tunes. The Black and Indigenous People of Colour and Asian and Pacific Islander cast depict the white characters, the intention being to make history as relatable as possible. Author Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspired to write Hamilton as a hip-hop concept album rather than a musical after picking up a biography of Alexander Hamilton’s life at an airport before going on vacation. Over the course of seven years, Lin shaped Hamilton from that album to the gigantic musical success it is now.
I was lucky enough to attend the first night of preview performances having waited seven months since tickets were purchased, on top of the six years waiting to see a production in person. I have never experienced such elation of a theatre audience from the first few opening bars of the opening song. Clapping, cheering, and yelling erupted the second Lyndon Watts walked on stage as Aaron Burr, Hamilton’s frenemy (and the damn fool that shot him).
The Australian cast have big shoes to fill after the original Broadway cast film of the musical was released during quarantine on Disney Plus. With a cast filled with a mixture of Australian musical theatre veterans and fresh faces, Hamilton brings an excitement and level of proud patriotism that only a hip-hop musical about the Founding Fathers of America can bring to an Australian audience.
As the characters are introduced in the first song, we finally meet Alexander Hamilton, played by South African/Australian actor Jason Arrow, to cheers I have only heard at concerts headlined by A-List artists. The cheering lasted for about 30 seconds before Jason signalled that he and the cast would like to go on. Was this exhilarated reception a result of an ebullient audience back in the theatre after COVID closed live performance for nearly a year, or because much like me, they had also waited a very long time to see Hamilton?
The music of Hamilton alone deserves a dedicated review, with elements taken from popular 90’s hiphop music earning chuckles from audience members who recognised them. Leitmotifs created for specific characters are woven and embedded into several songs the moment the characters appear on stage, and the reprise of lyrics brings an entirely new meaning to different parts of the story, reflecting how multilayered Miranda intended this show to be. If the thought of a hip-hop musical makes you turn your nose up, or the price of a single ticket makes your eyes pop out of your head, get yourself into the room where it happens and find out for yourself whether Hamilton lives up to the hype.

CD REVIEWS En Masse: Offspring Bites 3 Ensemble Offspring ensembleoffspring.com
There are three works here, the third in Ensemble Offspring’s series of specially commissioned chamber works. Two composed for sextet. One of them, Alex Pozniak’s En Masse, gives the collection its name. It’s a 30-minute piece in three movements, the instruments working with a common purpose to create music of weight and seriousness. Percussion and percussive piano – rhythmic and bottom-heavy – provide bedrock and backbone, while the other instruments weave a filigree of sound around this.
Holly Harrison’s Bend/Boogie/Break is, by comparison, rather playful. As its title suggests, we find glissandi and pitch bending over funky bass rhythms before a quiet, slow, rather mysterious passage gives way to a frenetic coda. Thomas Meadowcroft’s Medieval Rococo, the final work, dispenses with the strings and adds discreet electronics, providing us with another sound world. Alto flute and clarinet provide a pliable firmament, while tuned percussion and a harpsichord-sounding keyboard sparkle like stars. - Paul Cooke
L’Addio
Il Giardino Armonico; Giovanni Antonini, conductor Alpha 684 This album is the ninth in a cycle of Haydn symphony recordings, the last of which will be released in 2032, the 300th anniversary of Haydn’s birth. The cycle was instigated by conductor Giovanni Antonini, who is working with two period instrument orchestras to complete the recordings. The title of the CD, L’Addio, refers to Symphony no 45, the Farewell, and it is paired with symphonies number 15 and 35, along with the Scena di Berenice, a short cantata for soprano, sung here by Sandrine Piau. Excerpted from Pietro Metastasio’s musical drama Antigone, the scene depicts Berenice
in despair that her lover, Demetrius, has taken his own life rather than see her married to his father. It is another farewell, though of a very different kind to Symphony no 45. The recording is vibrant and alive with high spirited performances from the orchestra that feature a great deal of virtuosic natural horn playing. A recording that captures the energy and excitement of the symphonies, the music is accompanied by informative notes and even a photo essay to add to the package. A very enjoyable experience. - James Nightingale
The Monk Watches the Eagle Keith Tippett lloydvanthoff.com Discus 102CD
Pianist and composer Keith Tippett, who died in June last year, would have regarded himself as a jazz musician. It would have to have been a broad definition of jazz, however, as he was involved in the fields of jazz-rock, progressive rock (providing ‘thrilling cascades of spiky dissonance’), big band, and piano improvisation. He also composed for and performed with contemporary classical groups. The Monk Watches the Eagle was commissioned by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, and performed at Norwich Cathedral in 2004, but has only recently been released.
18
The libretto, which evokes the final thoughts of a dying holy man, was written by Keith’s wife, Julie Tippett. She sings, accompanied by the BBC Singers and two quartets of saxophones, which provide both organ-like accompaniment and improvised solos. Tippett conducts but doesn’t play. Is the cantata sacred, or secular? Is it classical, or jazz? Both, on both counts, and more: the piece has been movingly described by Richard Williams as ‘a work of great spiritual depth and power, radiating its beams of light as though shining through stained glass’. - Paul Cooke
CD REVIEWS The Recipe
Daniel Susnjar’s Mini Big Band danielsusnjar.bandcamp.com
Four Questions
Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra Zoho Music LLC (Grammys 2021 Best Latin Jazz Album)
This recording showcases a selection of live performances from the multi-awardwinning Western Australian drummer and composer Daniel Susnjar’s exciting new Afro-Peruvian West Australian Academy Performing Arts Mini Big Band. Recorded at the Edith Spiegeltent in Western Australia to a capacity audience, this concert is a suite of works combining infectious grooves with intricate jazz improvisation and vocals from Lucy Iffla. The opening title track of Iffla on vocals is apropos, as it ignites the band through the interplay between the drummer, guitarists, and percussionists, with the horns, providing their shiver component throughout the recording. It’s a tight ensemble with some clever ideas, that plays with an uncluttered appreciation of phrase and rhythm. The
members are an authentic-sounding group of fine musicians, who cannot be faulted on a technical level, amongst them are the cream of talent from the above institution. Containing six horns, a rhythm section, plus eight percussionists, at times they raise the roof, but during the quieter moments, as on You Are Not Forgotten, the ensemble glows around James O’Brien on the piano as he runs off some sparkling lines that display another dimension to their high calibre of artistry. The Recipe warrants repeated spins to gain a real appreciation of the talent on display.
Arturo O’Farrill is the son of legendary Cuban musician Chico O’Farrill, and has been on a mission to expand the meaning of Afro-Latin music. For his sixth album, Four Questions, O’Farrill and his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra come together once again to make further socio-political and cultural statements. The concept of this album finds its inspiration from a 1903 book, The Souls of Black Folk by American Civil Rights activist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (W.E.B Du Bois). The four questions refer to integrity, honesty, decency and virtue. On the title track, O’Farrill wants to acknowledge the richness of the Afro-American musical heritage. He responds to social activist Cornel West’s expansion on W.E.B. Du Bois’ ideas through a lot of orchestration and a lot of percussion.
Four Questions goes beyond enticing melodies; it gradually veers towards a more multi-layered approach. For instance, A Still, Small Voice is a fascinating four-part tune for jazz orchestra and gospel choir. On it, O’Farrill highlights the importance of collectivism over individualism. This richly collaborative album raises those voices, highlighting the need for the wider public to reflect on justice and (in)equality. It’s definitely a brilliant and powerful project that resonates with the recent Black Lives Matter movement.

Modesty
Until recently I listened fairly frequently to ABC Classic FM. I decided to try Fine Music – was tired of increasing focus on personalities of the presenters – ‘celebrities’ seemed almost more important than the music. What a difference changing to Fine Music! I like the modest professionalism of the presenters – who I believe are actually volunteers. Their presentation giving background of music, explanation, etc is just right. - Richard Sippe

What a pleasure it was to hear the tribute program to the dear Taryn Fiebig. Such souls only come this way too rarely. She will be dearly missed in the music world. And it is so pleasant to hear such a great announcer present it in such a tasteful and sensitive manner. This lady should be heard more often! Bravo. - Kenneth
Not So Difficult
Lovely music this afternoon on Hosanna – thank you Meg – perfect blend of liturgical season and just plain beauty. Where has that Vivaldi Stabat Mater been all my life?! That’s the joy of Fine Music – even at my time of life (!) there is still so much to learn.
I read with interest your article in the March magazine about Thomas Adès. Though his music is not to everyone’s taste, it’s worth noting that in 2018 his score for the movie Colette about the French writer and starring Keira Knightley, won Best Original Score in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. That other contemporary composer of what I like to call ‘difficult’ music, Phillip Glass, won a similar award for his music for the documentary about primatologist Jane Goodall in 2017. It only goes to show that they can write listenable music when they try!

ALFONSO: John Aler, ten PIETRO: Jean-Philippe Lafont, bass Ensemble Choral Jean Laforge; Monte Carlo PO/Thomas Fulton. EMI 5 75257 2 2:29 Fenella, the mute sister of Masaniello, has been seduced and abandoned by Alfonso, son of the Viceroy of Naples. Through gestures, she tells Elvira of her seduction. Elvira and Alfonso marry and, when the couple emerge from the church, Fenella recognises Alfonso as her seducer and flees. Fenella tells Masaniello of her seduction. He is infuriated and swears to have revenge but Fenella, who still loves Alfonso, does not mention his name. Then Masaniello calls the fishermen to arms and they swear destruction to the enemy of their country. In the marketplace, the people go to and fro, buying and selling with a show of merriment while concealing their real purpose. Attempts by the Viceroy’s bodyguard to arrest Fenella cause a general revolt in which the people are victorious. Masaniello is filled with sorrow and disgust at the horrors being enacted in the city. Pietro and comrades try to persuade Masaniello to further deeds but he only wants liberty for the people and shrinks from murder and cruelties. Alfonso begs at Fenella’s door for a hiding-place. He enters with Elvira. Masaniello assures the strangers of his protection and, even when Pietro denounces Alfonso as the Viceroy's son, Masaniello holds his promise sacred. Pietro, with his fellow conspirators leave, filled with rage and hatred. The magistrate of the city presents Masaniello with the Royal crown and he is proclaimed King of Naples. Pietro confides to the fishermen that he has administered poison to Masaniello in order to punish him for his treason, and that the King will soon die. Fresh troops of soldiers are marching against the people with Alfonso at their head. Believing that Masaniello alone can save them, the fishermen entreat him to take the command of them once more and Masaniello, although extremely ill, agrees. The combat takes place while an eruption of Vesuvius is going on. Masaniello falls in the act of saving Elvira's life. On hearing these terrible tidings, Fenella leaps from the terrace into the abyss beneath while the fugitive noblemen again take possession of the city. Dès l’enfance, from Fra Diavolo (1830/32). Warner Classics 5054196055127 1:35 In the village of Sesenheim in AlsaceLorraine in 1771, Friederike exchanges expressions of love with Johann Wolfgang Goethe. He is a student at Strasbourg University but another student, Jakob Lenz, warns Friederike of the danger of loving Goethe who is known to flit from one girl to another. Later in Strasbourg, a company of young people are dancing at Madame Scholl’s house. Friederike and her sister Salomea are there, along with Goethe, Jakob Lenz and their fellow students. When Friederike and Goethe are alone, Goethe reassures her that, for all the attention he gets from the other young ladies, it is to her that his heart is truly given. Goethe has been offered a post as poet at the Court of Weimar and Captain Knebel arrives from Weimar to accompany Goethe to his new position at Court. He reveals that Goethe's predecessor at court had lost his post because the pressures of marriage and a family had restricted his creativity. The Duke of Saschen-Weimar is determined this time to have a bachelor in the post. Goethe tells him that he is no longer interested. When Friederike discovers this she realises that, if she were to stand in his way, it would mean misery for both of them. Goethe tells Friederike that he has turned down the position at Weimar but she knows that she cannot allow him to make such a sacrifice. She pointedly takes up an earlier offer to dance with Jakob. Goethe is shocked by her seeming indifference to him and he tells Knebel that he will, after all, accept the Weimar appointment. He bids Friederike a cold farewell. Eight years have passed and Friederike has remained single despite the attentions of the faithful Jakob. He comes to try to cheer her but she brushes him aside, telling him that nobody who has loved Goethe can love anyone else. Then Goethe returns. He is passing through Sesenheim on his way to Switzerland with the Duke of SaschenWeimar. He tells the Duke that this was the place where he spent the happiest hours of his life. Friederike has waited eight years to see him and she is overjoyed. Goethe
finally realises the truth of the sacrifice that Friederike made for him but his duties mean that he must move on once again, this time for good. At least, through his writings, Goethe now belongs to the whole world, and thus also to Friederike.

Auber, D-F-E. Le domino noir. Comic opera in three acts. Libretto by Eugène Scribe. First performed Paris, 1837. ANGÈLE d’OLIVARÈS: Sumi Jo, sop BRIGITTE de SAN LUCAR: Isabelle Vernet, sop HORACE de MASSARENA: Bruce Ford, ten COUNT JULIANO: Patrick Power, ten GIL PEREZ: Jules Bastin, bass London Voices; English CO/Richard Bonynge. Decca 476 2173 1:49 The setting is Madrid where a young novice nun, Angèle de Olivarès is about to take final vows. With her companion Brigitte, Angèle slips out of the convent to enjoy a last night of freedom and attend a ball in honour of the Queen of Spain's birthday. She wears a black half-mask (the ‘domino’ of the title). Horace de Masserena had fallen in love with her at the ball held the year before and returns in the hope of meeting her again. He dances with the woman in the black mask and, realising that she is Angèle, his friend Count Juliano sets the clock back an hour causing Angèle to miss leaving at midnight before the gates of the convent were locked. Angèle runs off seeking shelter for the night in a house, not knowing that it belongs to Count Juliano who is holding a late-night party for his friends, including Horace. Angèle persuades the housekeeper to disguise her as her niece from the country. She manages to fool everyone except Horace who locks her in a room where he hopes to keep her until she gives him an explanation for running away. The drunken Gil Perez opens the door and runs off, believing her to be a demon in her mask and cloak. Angèle escapes and next morning manages to slip undiscovered into the convent. Shortly before the ceremony, a letter from the Queen freeing her from her vows, allows her to marry Horace.
