Ryuichi Sakamoto, the renowned Japanese composer, electronic music pioneer, actor and producer, died a few weeks ago, aged 71, of cancer. Although his early compositions were in an avant-garde vein, he is best known in the West for his soundtracks for the Nagisa Oshiima 1983 film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, in which he also starred with David Bowie, and Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, which won him an Oscar, Grammy, and BAFTA Award, four years later. Lyndon Pike recounts highlights of this extraordinary musician’s career and influence on contemporary classical and popular music.
One of the musical highlights of the Blue Mountains Equinox Festival over four weekends in March, was the Spanish-inspired evening performance of the Byron Mark Septet’s latest recording Odyssey at the Palais Royale in Katoomba, reviewed here by Barry O’Sullivan.
100clicksWest is an initiative devoted to presenting cutting-edge music in the Blue Mountains, directed by local resident Felicity Wilcox. Active since 2016, this year’s series, Acousto-Electric, consists of five double-bill programs employing both acoustic and electronic instruments. Paul Cooke went along to report on Grey-Note, one of the concerts, but there are still three left to be enjoyed: Hiber-Nation on May 20, Song-Cycles on July 1, and later in the year In-Flux on November 4.
Lastly, Iris Zeng reviews the opening concert of Bach Akademie Australia’s 2023 series, where the highlight was J.S. Bach’s Missa Brevis in F. There’s a link to their website at the end of her article if you’re interested in upcoming concerts. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

The Precocious Mendelssohn
Among all the fine arts, none seems as capable of producing youthful talent as classical music. The sight of pre-pubescent performers exhibiting faultless technique at the various music competitions is so commonplace these days as to rarely warrant comment. Nor is this a modern phenomenon. Child prodigies in music are documented at least as far back as the 17th century.
Camille Saint-Saens, at the age of ten in 1845, made his formal debut as a concert pianist and offered, as an encore, to play any of Beethoven’s 32 sonatas from memory. At the pinnacle of child prodigies is, of course, Mozart, who was touring Europe as a concert pianist at the age of six. Felix Mendelssohn followed a similar route, making his concert debut as a pianist in 1818, aged nine. That was not what made him exceptional, however. Indeed, he was arguably not even the best pianist in his own family, his elder sister Fanny being at least equally gifted.
Much rarer at such tender years is the gift of composition. Here Mozart stands alone. He started writing music at age five and scores poured from his pen throughout his youth and teenage years. We can’t be exactly certain when Mendelssohn started composing, but his music was being performed in public by the time he was ten. Between the ages of 11 and 15, he wrote 13 string symphonies, five concertos, four singspiels and a whole series of chamber works, piano and organ pieces, songs and sacred choral works. Nor were these imitative, juvenile pieces. Most were distinctive for their originality and sophistication.
These were followed, at age 16, by the Octet for Strings, regarded by most commentators as one of the great chamber works of the 19th century. Then the following year came the concert overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a work of such brilliance that it established Mendelssohn’s name internationally. On his 15th birthday, his tutor, Carl Zelter, confessed he had nothing left to teach Mendelssohn and proclaimed: “you are no longer an apprentice, but a fully-fledged member of the brotherhood of musicians.”
On Sunday 7 May, in Sunday Special at 3.00 pm, you can hear a performance of one of the principal compositions of Mendelssohn’s youth, his Concerto in D minor for piano, violin and strings. Written exactly 200 years ago in May 1823, when Mendelssohn was 14, it is a work of astonishing stylistic maturity.
Mendelssohn’s youthful genius raised enormous expectations for his adult career. However, though he wrote much beautiful and very popular music, his mature output was rather disappointing, showing little stylistic development or innovation. It caused the famous conductor Hans von Bülow to say that Mendelssohn began as a genius and ended as a talent. Many critics have believed this is because Mendelssohn never faced hardship, struggle or setback in his life and thus had little passion or emotion to pour into his music. Whatever the truth of this, it remains that Mendelssohn’s youthful work is his brilliant legacy to us.
Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda
Lyndon Pike pays tribute to a modern day musical pioneer
This month witnessed the passing of renowned Japanese musical visionary Ryuichi Sakamoto, an artist whose talent and versatility as a musician, composer, actor and producer earned him a reputation as one of the most influential artists of our time. His innovative use of technology and experimentation with different musical styles have had a profound impact on the development of electronic music and helped to bridge cultural gaps between East and West.
His music has been featured in films, television shows, documentaries and video games, and he collaborated with countless musicians and artists throughout his career. An active performer and producer right up until his passing, his work remains a testament to his creative genius and dedication to social and environmental causes.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, on January 17, 1952, Sakamoto began his musical education at the age of three and later attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied composition and electronic music. Exposed to diverse musical styles and avant-garde filmmaking, he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra with Yukihiro Takahashi and Haruomi Hosono. The band’s groundbreaking sound and use of electronic instruments helped to build the foundation for synth pop, electro, and techno during the 1970s and early ‘80s. Blending traditional Japanese music with Western pop, YMO became huge stars in Japan, where they topped the Oricon charts.
During his time with YMO, Sakamoto released his first solo album, Thousand Knives Of, which blended classical piano with electronic elements. This art pop record was followed by B-2 Unit two years later, which included the groundbreaking electrofunk single Riot in Lagos. The contrasting styles between the two albums showcased Sakamoto’s unpredictable and diverse range of musical influences, which became a defining characteristic of his later work.
After YMO disbanded in 1983, Sakamoto dedicated himself to solo and collaborative projects. His work as a film composer also allowed him to explore his love for classical music, achieving both artistic and commercial success with his score for the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, in which he also acted alongside David Bowie. The score incorporated elements of Japanese traditional music and European classical music. His most famous film score is undoubtedly the soundtrack for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, which earned him an Oscar, Grammy, and BAFTA Award for Best Original Score.
His talent for creating classical arrangements of his own works and the works of others is also evident in his discography. In 1996, he released an album of his own compositions, 1996, performed entirely by the string quartet Kronos Quartet. He has also arranged works by David Bowie, including Life on Mars and Heroes, for piano and orchestra, demonstrating his skill at creating arrangements that highlight the beauty and complexity of classical music.
Throughout his career, Sakamoto collaborated with a variety of classical musicians and ensembles, including the New Japan Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. His collaborations with cellist Jaques Morelenbaum resulted in several critically acclaimed albums, including Casa and Smoochy, which seamlessly blend elements of classical, jazz, and Brazilian music.
Sakamoto received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Order of the Cavaleiro of the Brazilian Order of Cultural Merit. He was a passionate activist and was involved in various environmental causes throughout his career. In 2011, he helped organize the No Nukes 2012 concert in Japan, which called for the abolition of nuclear power in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.
Sakamoto was also involved in humanitarian work and worked with organizations such as Amnesty International and the United Nations to raise awareness of human rights issues around the world. In recent years, Sakamoto became an advocate for anti-ageing research and has spoken out about the need to address ageing as a major public health issue which culminated in the Longevity Consortium at the University of Southern California.
In 2014, Sakamoto was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent treatment, which forced him to put his music career on hold for a while. He recovered and resumed working, releasing several albums and performing live concerts, including an Australian concert performance in 2019, which was recorded and released as the album Two: Live At The Sydney Opera House. However, he later revealed that although his throat cancer went into remission, he had been diagnosed with rectal cancer.
While unable to perform on-stage, he presented live streams edited together from short takes into virtual concerts. Playing the Piano 12122020, an audio recording of a streamed concert, was released in late 2021, preceded by Garden of Shadows and Light, a full-length with David Toop.
In early 2023, Sakamoto released 12, an album of atmospheric, minimalist pieces, some of which incorporated the sound of his strained, unsteady breathing as a reflection on his own mortality. Just months later on March 28, Ryuichi Sakamoto died at the age of 71.

Tchaikovsky’s ‘favourite offspring’: TheSnowMaiden
The Snow Maiden, the much-loved Rimsky-Korsakov opera, was based on a play that premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre, seven years earlier, on 11 May 1873. As was the way with plays of the time it came with accompanying instrumental music. The theatre commissioned the 49-year-old Alexander Ostrovsky to write the play and the 32-year-old Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to score the music. The two had collaborated on previous works and their creative partnership enabled them to work closely. The composer completed his score in just three weeks.
In Ostrovsky’s version of the familiar Russian fairy tale, a child is born to the Spring Fairy and Father Frost. The child, Snow Maiden, inherits a longing for warmth and love from her mother and a loveless cold fate from her father. This presents a conflict born for musical expression and Tchaikovsky found nineteen opportunities to do so, employing a full-size orchestra, chorus and soloists to create a score that has been described as both lavish and charming.
Tchaikovsky weaves folk music throughout the drama and uses other pastoral touches, such as the oboe, to accompany the shepherd’s love songs. There is a change of mood as the Tsar sets a challenge to find a suitor to melt the maiden’s cold heart. The associated celebrations are marked with an energetic sequence of dances, choruses, and all-round merriment. A suitor is identified, and the Spring Fairy, albeit reluctantly, grants her daughter the capacity for love.
Just when it seems a happy ending is assured the plot takes an unfortunate turn. At the very moment the Snow Maiden abandons herself to love she is struck by a ray of the wakening sun and melts away before her lover’s eyes. In the depths of his despair, the lover throws himself off a cliff. While things end unfortunately for the young couple, the drama’s denouement finds expression in a charming instrumental interlude and the work ends with a rousing March of the Tsar and a hymn-like Finale to sing the sun god’s praises.
As to the success of the premiere, the audience who rose from their seats 150 years ago was divided. The literary members who regarded Ostrovsky as a fine satirical realist were perplexed at the rather ho-hum fairy tale story line. The musical members, however, loved it. Tchaikovsky himself regarded The Snow Maiden as a success. In 1879, when his patron complimented him on the poetic qualities of the music, he replied: “The Snow Maiden is one of my favourite offspring. Spring is a wonderful time; I was in good spirits, as I always am at the approach of summer. I think this music is imbued with the joys of spring that I was experiencing at the time.”
In fact, Tchaikovsky so loved this particular ‘offspring’ that he had intentions to develop the full opera and was disappointed when he was pipped at the post by Rimsky-Korsakov. Tchaikovsky wasn’t to be completely outplayed, however. Some of his Snow Maiden score went on to live another life and you may recognize it in parts of his overturefantasia, Hamlet.
High Five with Saxophonist Sandy Evans
Barry O’Sullivan talks with the international saxophonist and composer
Sandy Evans is an internationally renowned saxophonist and composer with a passion for improvisation and new music. She has played with and written for some of the most important groups in Australian jazz since the early 1980s and has toured extensively in Australia, Europe, Canada, and Asia. Sandy has an extensive composition portfolio including commissions for the Australian Art Orchestra, Sirens Big Band, Taikoz, and the Mara! Big Band. She has been awarded an Australia Council Fellowship, a Churchill Fellowship, an OAM, an Australian Jazz Bell Award, a Young Australian Creative Fellowship, an APRA Award, and three ARIA Awards. Sandy has a PhD from Macquarie University and has lectured in music at UNSW, Macquarie University, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
When did playing jazz first enter your life and who were the artists that influenced your style?
John Speight, the jazz pianist who founded the Manly Jazz Festival, was a teacher at my primary school. His jazz trio used to play at the school musicals that he and Alan Weldrick, another teacher, composed just for us. I loved hearing John’s jazz trio play and was entranced from the start. I always loved improvising, so jazz was a natural fit for me. A great many artists have influenced my style and continue to do so. In my early years, it was mostly Australian players including Don Burrows and John Sangster. When I was a bit older, musicians I heard playing around Sydney included Mark Simmonds, Dale Barlow, Bernie McGann, Judy Bailey, and Roger Frampton.
What are your current musical projects?
It’s hard to give a complete run down as I am fortunate to be involved in a lot of musical projects! One is a quartet with saxophonist Andrew Robson, bass player Brett Hirst and drummer Hamish Stuart at the Orange Jazz Festival in June. My long-term group projects include The Catholics, Ten Part Invention, Mara!, Barra Barra (a group led by First Nations composer/saxophonist Brenda Gifford), a duo with Andrea Keller, a new project led by tabla player Bobby Singh, and an upcoming recording release with Satsuki Odamura’s koto ensemble.
Life as a musician is full of challenges. Name some of the challenges that have confronted you so far and how have you overcome them?
Challenge: Make enough money to survive, thrive, and present the music you are passionate about.
Survival strategy: don’t give up and try not to become depressed or discouraged. Diversify your income (in my case mostly through teaching, which I love). Apply for government and philanthropic funding, and of course one needs family support.
Challenge: my husband and a close musical colleague got MS in 1997.
Survival strategy: the healing power of music often helps, as does the incredible friendship and support of the music community, and my family.
Challenge: lack of gender diversity in the jazz scene. Fortunately, there has been a lot of positive change in this regard over the last ten years, but there is still much room for improvement.
Survival strategy: Advocating as much as possible for gender diversity e.g., through the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award. Playing with and listening to gender-diverse musicians whose creativity and support are inspirational.
What are some of your other interests outside of your musical career?
I love walking in nature, swimming, and yoga.
You’ve performed in duets, quartets, and large jazz orchestras. How does each experience differ for you?
Small groups are fantastic for group interaction among improvisers. The sometimes-unexpected direction of the musical journey can be very stimulating for the players, and hopefully also for the audience! New ideas emerge through trust, exploration, creativity, and adventure. Small groups without chord instruments, e.g. my trio with Toby Hall and Brett Hirst, allow for a malleability of melodic counterpoint that is very liberating. I also love the harmonic and textural scope of playing with great pianists like Alister Spence and Andrea Keller. As a composer, I enjoy the broad palette offered by large ensembles, although there is often (but not always!) less freedom for individual improvisers in a large ensemble. The range of colours and the collective energy can be exhilarating.
Jazz: Clint Eastwood’s Passion
by Louise LevyIt’s hard to believe that Clint Eastwood will turn 93 on 31 May. He’s still busy acting, directing, and producing, but his first passion remains music, especially jazz.
When he was a small child, his mother, who could read music and play the piano a little, started him on the family piano. In high school, Eastwood learned to play guitar. By the time he finished high school he was an accomplished pianist and intended to pursue a career in music
Because his mother couldn’t play jazz or blues, it was up to him to choose what he liked. Eastwood started listening to musicians whom he thought were innovative and modern, such as Fats Waller and Art Tatum. Later, as a teenager in the 40s, he listened to Dixieland piano and lots of boogiewoogie, from such players as Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. Then came along George Shearing and a young man called Oscar Peterson, who at 25 was already known as an internationally renowned pianist.
In 1949, once he finished high school, Eastwood’s parents moved to Seattle. He drifted through a variety of menial jobs but retained his musical knowledge and his talent. Returning to California in 1951, he was drafted into the military, although in a non-combat role, becoming a lifeguard at Fort Ord Military Reservation. Following his discharge from the army in 1953, he moved to Hollywood and enrolled at Los Angeles City College, but dropped out to pursue acting.
Eastwood got his first break in 1959 by being cast as Rowdy Yates in the popular TV western Rawhide. He continued to act and in 1971 he made his directorial debut with the movie, Play Misty for Me (1971) which has a jazz soundtrack.
As he continued to create films he used jazz recordings whenever he could. For Bird (1988), Eastwood as director and producer showcased the revolutionary style of Charlie Parker as he explored his tragic life.
When he is acting, Eastwood often becomes involved with the soundtrack, as with In the Line of Fire (1993), where he wrote the original piano compositions. The success of the soundtrack of Changeling (2008) was due to the quality of the score that Eastwood wrote. Similarly, for the movie Sully (2016), he wrote the music for the theme Flying Home. As with many of his scores, his love of jazz comes through.
Apart from Eastwood’s own projects, he also gets involved with other’s. In 1987 Bruce Ricker was the producer for a documentary about pianist Thelonious Monk, but the funds had run out. As a teenager, Eastwood had listened to Monk and thought him interesting, so he bailed out Ricker’s film, Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser. It was completed the following year.
In October 1996, the Carnegie Hall Band, a string ensemble, and several reputable jazz figures were assembled to perform songs from soundtracks of Eastwood’s extensive filmography. From that night came a two-disc live album Eastwood After Hours: Live at Carnegie Hall (1996). This release was recognised by music critics as a a powerful tribute to Eastwood’s cultural legacy.
His jazz passion continues with his son, Kyle, now a jazz composer, bassist, and guitarist. Eastwood had taken him to the Monterey Jazz Festival when he was only eight years old. Kyle has contributed to nine of Eastwood’s films. The Eastwood tradition lives on.
Bach at EasterMissa Brevis in F
Iris ZengThree hundred years ago, J.S.Bach was made Thomaskantor in Leipzig, where he composed some of his most sacred works. His Missa Brevis in F, one of the four short Lutheran Masses he wrote in the last decade of his life, was the crown of Bach Akademie Australia’s triumphant opening concert of 2023.
When Madeleine Easton, Artistic Director of Bach Akademie Australia (BAA), chose St Francis to host Missa Brevis in F, she was immediately taken by ‘the space’ (although admittedly, the Chatswood venue, where her second matinee concert was held, had ‘better acoustics’). The warm nave welcomed 250 audience members into church pews for an intimate Easter celebration.
Easton floated onto the stage wearing an elegant black dress with a satin sash. Displaying both virtuosity and versatility but pliability, she gracefully moved on from conducting to playing the violin. The orchestra flowed with her gentle movements, exercising both restraint and jubilation throughout the night; the strings decoratively cushioned the choir, and very rarely did the harpsichordist muffle the soloist.
Among the high calibre performers, impressive showmanship came from trumpeter, Richard Fomison, who mastered the devilishly fast passages early on in Cantata BMV 66; together with alto Stephanie Dillon and tenor Richard Butler, whose Recitative unfolded in a convincingly ‘heated’ conversation between ‘Fear’ and ‘Hope’.
Particularly moving was Bach’s funeral motet Komm, Jesu, Komm BMV 229. Eight voices stood out from the 13-piece choir, contemplating the loss and promise of afterlife. The tender SATB (an initialism that describes the scoring of compositions for choirs, the initials standing for the voice types: S for soprano, A for alto, T for tenor and B for bass), carried a mournful air, without once feeling heavy.
But it was the arias of Missa Brevis in F BMV 66 that allowed the unique colours of BAA to truly shine. By the interval, people were fanning themselves with the program pamphlets; some dispersed into the courtyard – until the orchestra, tuning gloriously to something reminiscent of the sunset from Appalachian Spring, signalled the start of Brevis.
The six movements that followed fluctuated between moods of joy, vivacity and sorrow. Susannah Lawergren’s clear soprano trickled like a cool stream in Qui Tollis, poignantly accompanied by oboist Kailen Cresp; while both Andrew Fysh and Hannah Fraser gave earnest performances of Domine Deus and Quoniam. The chorus completed the night with exuberance (only a slight shame that the oboe cracked on the last note of the Mass!).
Five stars to Madeleine Easton and her fine musicians for their masterful performance. Leaving the church uplifted, it had been as Sir John Eliot Gardiner once said, ‘Music in the Castle of Heaven’.

The Byron Mark Septet Live at the Equinox Festival
Reviewed by Barry O’SullivanSpanning the entire Blue Mountains region over four weekends between 10 March and 2 April, the Equinox Festival was a convergence of fine food and craft beverages, music, art and entertainment with the spectacular natural environment.
One of the supreme musical highlights was the Spanish-inspired evening performance of the Byron Mark Septet’s latest recording Odyssey at the Palais Royale in Katoomba featuring the mesmerising flamenco dancing of Lauren Majarres on selected pieces.
Amid the wafting aromas of champignons al ajillo (garlic mushrooms), patatas bravas (fried potatoes), and gambas á la parrilla (grilled prawns) throughout the Grand Ballroom paired with glasses filled with Sangria, composer/pianist Byron Mark delivered a series of musical pieces taking deep inspiration from flamenco and Indian rhythms combined with western jazz harmonies. Amalgamating them with his roots in classical piano, Mark also incorporated a stellar string quartet with violin, viola, and cello.
Opening with his composition, Blossom, Mark utilised percussion instruments as the core groove elements and cleverly blended these with his frenetic piano arpeggios. Following was the original composition, Bubbles (Burbujas), utilising piano and string melodies depicting the soothing sound of the waves and the bubbles of foamy water as it races over the sand, with pizzicato in the string section imitating little bubbles popping in and out of the water.
The performance of this composition was enthusiastically received by an audience eager to be pleased and was followed by another standout original, Omens, with Mark displaying his virtuosity on the hang (a handpan subset of the steelpan), creating another unique sonic palette for the audience, underpinned with the tabla.
His compositions flowed thematically from one to the other and were occasionally interspersed with performances by guest flamenco dancer Lauren Majarres who appeared on stage in one number with a baston (Spanish walking stick) tapped on the floor symbiotically with her footwork.
After the interval, the string quartet returned to join the piano for a composition dedicated to Mark’s departed Greek grandmother, Yia Yia, followed by Piano Dance featuring two beautifully performed virtuosic solo performances from Damian De BoosSmith on cello and Dimitri Calligeros on violin, as well as further mesmerising Spanish dancing from Lauren Majarres.
As well as being a generous storyteller of his musical journey, the ebullience of Byron Mark when conducting and in performance mode on stage was remarkable, with his display of enthusiasm and cheerfulness imparting seriously high-octane energy to both the ensemble players and the audience.
Throughout the evening’s performance, the interweaving of dynamic flamenco dance, western harmonies, eastern musical traditions and rhythms with bursts of inimitable classical music made for a wonderfully rich cultural experience that was cheered at its conclusion by the highly receptive capacity crowd.
Grey-Note at 100clicksWest
By Paul Cooke4 March 2023
The Blue Mountains village of Wentworth Falls is about a hundred kilometres west of Sydney. Fittingly, 100clicksWest is an initiative devoted to presenting cutting-edge music there, directed by local resident Felicity Wilcox. Active since 2016, this year’s series, Acousto-Electric, consists of five double-bill programs employing both acoustic and electronic instruments.
The first concert, Grey-Note, took place on 4 March, and featured solo piano improvisations. The first was by Monica Brooks, an improviser and composer based in the Blue Mountains,
who provided the more acoustic music of the evening, relying on the resonances both of instrument and performing space; the second was by Chris Abrahams (long-time member of The Necks), whose music was more informed by electronic techniques. With no titles provided, a listener can regard such music as abstract and absolute in the extreme – or can conjure up images unbidden and never dreamed of by the performer. I tended to hear in quieter passages the filigree of waves lapping against sand and, when overtones became overwhelming, those same waves whipped up by gales and lashing against the impenetrable boulders of a breakwater. An immersive experience!
Volunteer SpotlightJames Ranieri
James’ association with Fine Music Sydney goes back a long way, through a church affiliation with Peter Bell, a long-standing 2MBS volunteer, with whom he collaborated in ‘doing the sound desk’ and playing flute and saxophone in the St Stephens’ Normanhurst band. He also assisted Peter with concert recordings for 2MBS at the Opera House.
When James retired at the end of 2021, after 45 years in IT, project and people management, Peter invited him to do some project management for 2MBS. The main task was to find a new production, scheduling and playback system, and to upgrade computer equipment and software. The latter has been completed and the team is about halfway through replacing the playback system.
A few months ago, James volunteered to be a presenter at 2MBS and now regularly presents the Stage and Screen program on Saturday evenings.
James has a long history with music, having played in primary and secondary school bands: cornet, trumpet, flugel horn, tenor horn and euphonium, and even conducting the band. He also had piano and guitar lessons and then taught himself to play the flute and saxophone, both of which he has played in the Hornsby Concert Band, Jazz Showband and with flute trios and quartets. Having completed Jazz Composition and Jazz Performance courses at the Sydney Conservatory of Music, he loves composing and performing.
James has eclectic tastes. He says, “I like most types of music and am classically trained, so I have always had a great love of classical music especially piano music by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Bach, Schubert and Beethoven. As a young man, I became a big fan of the rock and blues resurgence of the 70s and 80s, particularly the ‘British invasion’ of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Yes, and Genesis, but my favourite rock band was Jethro Tull, who were a fabulous live act that inspired me to learn the flute and saxophone.
I also love good jazz and my favourites would be Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Bird Parker, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane and the like.”
What about magical concerts or events?
“Favourite rock concert: Jethro Tull live at New York Madison Square Garden, the greatest live band of their era. Favourite classical concert: Maurizio Pollini at the London Royal Festival Hall, where I was introduced to avant-garde piano music; and Luciano Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma in Turandot at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Most memorable jazz concert: Miles Davis Live at the Chicago Jazz Festival.”
Other interests? What does a busy person do?
“I still like to compose and play music,” says James. “I love going to concerts, musicals and shows and watching movies. I enjoy audio/video production and editing, photography, gardening, wine making and wine appreciation.

Weinberg: String Quartets Vol. 3
Arcadia Quartet
Chandos CHAN 20180
The Polish-born Soviet composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg is receiving something of a reappraisal from the Western musical world. While not as well-known as other Soviet era composers, such as Shostakovich and Myaskovsky, his music shares many aspects with those contemporaries. The third volume of Weinberg’s string quartets from the Arcadia Quartet features two substantial pieces, Quartets numbers 4 and 16, that provide an excellent overview of Weinberg’s oeuvre. They come from opposite ends of Weinberg’s career, the Fourth from the end of World War II, and the Sixteenth, his penultimate quartet, from
1981. The Fourth has an almost congenial character, reflecting Weinberg’s newfound optimism arriving in Moscow. The Sixteenth betrays the influences of Eastern European folk music, tinged by a modernist edge that perhaps demonstrates Weinberg’s awareness of musical trends outside the USSR. The performance from the Arcadia Quartet and the recording quality are wonderful, featuring cohesive ensemble playing and the expected excellence of the Chandos label. Highly recommended to connoisseurs of the string quartet genre.

When the 40 musicians that make up Victoria Brass are playing at full blast, you can be forgiven for thinking that you’re in the middle of an entire symphony orchestra. In numbers like the finale from Sir Arthur Bliss’s Checkmate Ballet Suite, or Mussorgsky’s Coronation Scene from Boris Godunov, you are blown away, no pun intended. And then, at the other end of the scale, you are lulled by Jared McCunnie’s graceful Elegy (incidentally a World Premiere on this CD), and there are other premieres as well. Andrew Batterham’s three movement Trumpet Concerto gets its first
recording on this disc, and Latvian composer Erik Esenvald’s Only in Sleep gets its Australian premiere. The great quality of the playing perhaps should come as no surprise, given that the band’s principal conductor, Dr Matthew van Emmerik, was the principal euphonium player with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force in London, and in the past has played with bands such as the Black Dyke and Brighouse & Rastrick bands, well known to lovers of the genre. It’s a beautifully presented CD with 14 tracks, every one a beauty.

His following recordings in the Black Money series are Alter Ego, recorded in 2012, and most recently, Pass the Rainbow. The title of the latter describes the inheritance of musical colour and depth of field via McAlls’ mentor, pianist/composer Tony Gould. It’s Influenced by stomp and boogie, groove jazz, and funk, the main musical ingredients that flourish in McAll’s original compositions, with the addition of a sublimely dramatic treatment of that old war horse, I’m a Fool to Want You, into the mix. McAll’s musical compositions have moments of exuberance and

Danish String Quartet
ECM New Series
ECM 2565
It was my great pleasure in August 2022 to attend a concert by the Nomad String Quartet (since named as our artists in residence for 2023) featuring The Best of Danish Folk Songs. These were derived from two collections of folk songs collated and arranged by the Danish String Quartet, already showing in their relative youth a willingness to perform unfamiliar repertoire and intelligently programmed recitals. The Danish String Quartet has since released a series of five albums, of which this is the fifth, featuring one of Beethoven’s late string quartets presented along with a particular Bach fugue and a quartet by a later composer. Here, Bach informs Beethoven’s valedictory composition, his String Quartet No 16. It in turn is followed
fire, and there is a lot happening on each track. Mystery Machine and Blind Faith is best described as maximalist, whereas McAll’s solo piano on Portality and Gould, with the ensemble, where he is more relaxed and lyrical without losing any of the intensity, best described as minimalist.
James Macaulay on trombone and Anton Delecca on tenor and clarinet, band leaders in their own right, navigate it all seamlessly and provide twistingly exploratory solos with individual voices that never overly dominate the ensemble. Lovers of big band sextet sound will revel in the music revealed on this album.
– Barry O’Sullivanby Webern’s String Quartet of 1905, which begins with a motif derived from the final movement of Beethoven’s work. It is gratifying to hear Webern’s music as part of an historical continuum rather than, as so often happens, bundled together with works by his contemporaries Schoenberg and Berg. It’s not commented upon by the Danish String Quartet, but the influence of Haydn looms large, with Beethoven’s good-natured, often playful, work and Webern’s movements built from sections and contrasts both recalling that composer’s example.

Each week we meet one of the world’s great musicians, singers, composers or conductors, along with up-and-comers and some of the men and women who influence the arts
Saxon Crusader Ivanhoe arrives in disguise at the home of his estranged father, Cedric, accompanied by two Norman Knights Templar. Sir Brian expresses interest in Cedric's lovely ward, Rowena, but Cedric angrily declares she will only marry a Saxon. Ivanhoe and Rowena
are in love and he had recently beaten Sir Brian in a tournament. Sir Brian plans revenge by abducting Rowena after an upcoming royal tournament. Ivanhoe warns Isaac, a Jew from York, that the knights plan to capture him. At the tournament, King Richard the Lionheart is taking part in disguise. Rowena is made Queen of the tourney. Ivanhoe, in a different disguise, challenges Sir Brian, wins, but is wounded. Prince John insists he remove his helmet to be crowned victor, and he is recognised by his father and Rowena. King Richard is making merry with Friar Tuck when Robin Hood arrives saying Cedric, Rowena, Ivanhoe, Isaac and his daughter, Rebecca, have all been captured by the two Normans. Sir Maurice plans to force Rowena into marriage, promising that Ivanhoe will be safe if Rowena and Cedric comply. Sir Brian declares his own plans to woo, and win, Rebecca. He promises her jewels and rank if she'll submit to him, but she leaps onto the parapet, threatening to jump. A bugle sounds: King Richard and his troops have arrived. Rebecca, who also loves Ivanhoe, tends to his wounds as the battle rages below the window. The castle is set on fire. Brian carries off Rebecca and King Richard rescues Ivanhoe from the conflagration. Sir Maurice is captured and sent to Prince John. Cedric agrees to Ivanhoe and Rowena's marriage, but the Knights Templar have sentenced Rebecca to burn at the stake for supposedly bewitching the Christian Knight, Sir Brian, unless a champion will fight for her. The exhausted Ivanhoe fights Sir Brian but, when he is about to strike the weakened Ivanhoe, Sir Brian falls dead, unable to survive the evil passions warring in his soul. The Templars regard this as proof of God's judgement and Rebecca's innocence, and she is freed. Ivanhoe is reunited with Rowena, and the King banishes the Knights Templar from English soil.

night, Cedric gives shelter to two foreigners, Ismael and his daughter, Leila, who are being pursued by the Norman, Brian de Boisguilbert. The household is enraged at the presence of two Muslims but a mysterious Pilgrim defends them. The Pilgrim reminds Ismael of when his daughter had nursed a wounded knight in the Holy Land. The Pilgrim is in fact Ivanhoe, Cedric’s son in disguise who makes himself known when Boisguilbert attacks the Castle. Ivanhoe fights valiantly but is wounded and is unable to prevent Leila’s abduction by the Norman. While imprisoned, Leila manages to get a message out asking for help from Philip, the King of France. The message is intercepted and she is accused of treason and condemned to the stake.
Ivanhoe arrives as Leila’s champion, fights a duel and kills Boisguilbert, champion for the Normans. Ismael reveals that Leila is in fact Edith, the daughter of the last Saxon king. Olric. Cedric blesses the marriage of Ivanhoe and Edith and Saxons and Normans unite to fight the French invaders.

Paganini visits the small Principality of Lucca, where the townspeople hear his diabolically tempting violin playing. The women are all hypnotised by his playing. The men, however, are quite sceptical, wishing he'd go to the devil. The Prince has issued orders forbidding Paganini's Lucca concert. Bella Giretti, prima
donna of the Royal Opera House, is the Prince's mistress. Anna Elisa, Napoleon’s sister, threatens to announce the affair between the Prince and Bella if he refuses to allow Paganini's concert to go ahead. The Prince is left with no other choice than to lift the ban.
In the ensuing six months, Paganini has been appointed court conductor and musical director of Lucca's opera. Overcome by his passion for playing cards, Paganini gambles away his priceless Stradivarius. The winner, Pimpinelli, promises to return the violin to him if Paganini will confide his secret on conquering women. Meanwhile Paganini has composed a love song for his sweetheart, Anna Elisa. Napoleon is enraged and orders that Paganini leave town immediately! Anna Elisa demands that these orders are nullified. She refuses to be separated from her lover. Paganini still has eyes for other women and he succumbs to Bella’s charms. Anna Elisa swears vengeance and orders Paganini to be arrested. Paganini is warned by Bella but he begins playing with such a passion at the concert that Anna Elisa forgets her anger and falls in love again. She pledges her love to him before the entire court.
Paganini arrives at a smugglers' tavern as he is to be smuggled across the border at midnight. Anna Elisa follows him. He tells her that that his one and only love is his violin and ‘no woman stands between us, but I must go alone because I must remain alone’.

Flavio, King of Lombardy, is also King of Britain. He has two trusted, elderly counsellors, Lotario and Ugone. Lotario's daughter Emilia is engaged to Ugone's son, Guido. Ugone has another daughter, Teodata, who is very beautiful. Flavio needs to replace his Governor in Britain and he first offers the position to Lotario, then changes his mind and offers it to Ugone thinking that, with her father away, he will be able to seduce Teodata. Teodata, however, has a secret lover, the courtier Vitige. Lotario, angry about the King choosing Ugone, insults Ugone who demands that his son, Guido, fight a duel with Ugone. Although it means that he could kill his bride's father, he dutifully agrees.

Teodata thinks he has discovered her affair with Vitige and confesses to her father. Lotario tells his daughter, Emilia, that her marriage to Guido will not go ahead. The King orders Vitige to tell Teodata that the King loves her and to bring her to him. Vitige and Teodata decide to play along with him. Lotario is mortally wounded in the duel with Guido. Emilia vows to be revenged.

Emilia demands justice from the King for her father's murder. Ugone defends his son to the King. Flavio says he will consider the matters. Emilia confronts Guido, who gives her his sword and tells her to kill him but she is unable to do it. Flavio overhears Teodata and Vitige arguing, revealing the plan to deceive him. Flavio declares that they will both be punished. Flavio now realises that he will have to show

The opera is based on historical figures and events from the War of the Roses in 15th century England, when the Lancastrians and the Yorkists vied for the throne.
On learning of his father’s death at the Battle of Towton, young Henry Clifford, a Lancastrian, vows to his mother, Lady Clifford, that he will avenge her loss. However, he is dissuaded by Lady Saint John (wife of Yorkist military leader Sir John Saint John), who tells him that his forces are not strong enough and advises him to flee to the wilderness. She also tells him that he is destined to marry
her daughter, Annie. When Annie enters shortly after, Henry is immediately captivated by her and determined to win her and so is persuaded to disguise himself as a shepherd and go into the wilderness with the protection of Colin, one of Lord Clifford’s men. They leave just as Sir John Saint John comes to arrest him.
During three years in exile, Henry has been dreaming of Annie. She appears before him, reassuring him that she is mortal. The two share a passionate love duet, when Colin and some foresters arrive wanting Henry to lead them in battle. Shortly after, Sir John Saint John arrives to arrest Henry on behalf of Richard III. Henry is nearly convinced to renounce his allegiance in order to win Annie’s hand, but Lady Clifford suddenly appears, crying 'Remember Towton!' Henry immediately declares that he would rather die than be a traitor. News arrives of Richard III's death at the Battle of Bosworth, and Sir John Saint John, who was about to have Henry executed, surrenders his sword. Henry no longer desires vengeance and spares his life, imposing a three year exile as a shepherd. Henry is proclaimed the 'shepherd lord'.

The comic story, derived from a Roman source, is set in a tomb. The Matron is recently widowed and wishes to remain with her husband’s body until she dies. Her maid tries to cheer her up, but a handsome Roman centurion (who had been guarding the bodies of executed criminals nearby) is more successful. He returns to his post to discover that a body is missing. The Matron suggests that her husband’s body replace it and, after negotiating with her father to reduce the required mourning period from seven years to one day, declares that she and the centurion will marry.

Alfred, a 9th century King of England, is living in disguise with Corin, a shepherd, and his wife, Emma, after a military defeat by the
Vikings. Alfred prays to the spirit of Britannia that his country will be liberated. His wife, Eltruda, and his son, Prince Edward, arrive, also in disguise. Edward soon reports that an army of Britons are camped nearby awaiting Alfred to lead them. As Alfred leaves for battle, Corin and Emma then realise who their guests are. They soon learn that Alfred and his troops have been successful, leading to the singing of the famous concluding chorus, Rule, Britannia! Sonata no 1 in F. Christopher Hogwood, hpd.
