Ordinarily everything would be a hive of activity here at the station in September as we would prepare to deliver our annual Celebration of Fine Music event. However, this year those plans have been rudely interrupted by Covid-19 and the subsequent restrictions placed on events. As a result, we decided to postpone our Emerging Artist programs until next year when we can give our artists a chance to showcase their talents in somewhat more normal circumstances. In the meantime, enjoy reading what Jennifer Hou, our 2017 Young Virtuoso Award winner has been up to since her win. We are however, still preparing for our annual general meeting. This year we see David James, our board chair, step down after completing his term. His history as our first Station Manager meant that we celebrated our 45th birthday this year with a large amount of enthusiasm and focus on our founding members’ hard work in birthing Australia’s first FM station. This AGM will also see Christopher Waterhouse and Katy Rogers-Davies step down as they prepare to relocate from Sydney. The valuable input they bring to our board as active professionals within the Arts sector will be missed. Finally, I would like to thank the following dedicated volunteers who were involved in the production of this month’s program. Regards, Rebecca Beare

Celebrating Florent Schmitt The Life and Legacy of Florent Schmitt Written by Rex Burgess

English speakers coming across the word Apache are most likely to associate it with the Native American tribe of that name. For French speakers, though, Les Apaches also serves to identify a semi-organised gang-culture which existed in Paris during the early 1900s. That the term was then adopted by a group of Parisian musicians, writers and artists – which included Ravel, Stravinsky, Tristan Klingsor and the gregarious subject of this article, Florent Schmitt – is somewhat surprising, but it seems they all rather liked the idea of being thought of as hooligans! Schmitt lived a long life (1870–1958) and for many years found himself at the centre of musical life in Paris. He maintained close friendships with many contemporary composers, including VillaLobos, Delius and Vaughan Williams, while also encouraging the careers of younger ones such as Arthur Honegger and his star pupil and biographer, Pierre-Octave Ferroud. Bearing in mind the time in which he was writing, it is little surprise that Schmitt’s early works fit quite snugly within the Romantic idiom: the stylistic influence of Schumann is unmistakable, as is that of his teacher and mentor, Fauré. Yet even in these early years, we begin to discern a unique voice and the emergence of the forward-looking nature of Schmitt’s musicality. Besides German Romanticism, Schmitt was also susceptible to Russian and Oriental influences, with some of his scores reflecting a penchant for broad and even slightly garish effects; however, they retain an interesting and original sensitivity. Being in Paris, Schmitt also was one of many composers to come under Debussy’s spell, his manner of representing landscapes in sound bringing him close to that master’s impressionism. As his style developed, Schmitt moved further away from impressionism in favour of a neo-classical architecture and more modern rhythmic and colouristic ideas. This was a trend which intensified during the inter-war years, as similarly reflected in the works of other French composers such as Honneger and Milhaud. As an aside, such was Stravinsky’s regard for Schmitt’s music that he once wrote to tell him that, for a time, he only listened to the music of Schmitt, Ravel and Debussy!

From having been one of the most performed French composers in the early 1900s, after World War II Schmitt fell into comparative neglect. Recent years, however, have seen quite a resurgence of interest in his music, with several conductors actively promoting it, including JoAnn Falletta and Yan Pascal Tortelier. With 2020 marking the 150th anniversary of his birth, we look forward to sharing more of his music with you.

Schmitt composed in most genres apart from opera, including a considerable amount of piano music. There are an impressive 138 opus numbers to his name and, being an accomplished pianist, it is not surprising that many of his piano works are technically quite challenging, described once by Alfred Cortot as “fistfuls of notes”. Yet this complexity is by no means merely padding; rather, it was intended to serve the music, making it, in Cortot’s words, “endlessly fascinating”.

In Conversation with Jennifer Hou Mona Omar speaks with the young pianist Photos by Jeffrey Cheah

What have you been up to since we saw you last in 2017? So many exciting things have happened since we last saw each other! In 2018, I performed Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Steven Hillinger and the North Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Later that month, I also completed my music honours degree. At the end of 2018, I spent a month in London, under the generous support of a Big Brother Movement Youth Music scholarship and renowned teachers Ian Jones and Helen Krizos. I also successfully auditioned for a Master of Music at The Royal Academy of Music, The Royal College of Music, The Royal Northern College of Music and Guildhall. In 2019, I completed my law degree. My penultimate and final year elective subjects took me to Zurich, Pune, and Beijing where I studied Law and Technology, Women, Gender and the Law, as well as Chinese International Business and Economic Law respectively. At the beginning of this year, I went to the United States for a second round of Masters auditions. You participated in and won a variety of awards and scholarships. What opportunities do you feel awards and scholarships provide young and emerging musicians? Participating in competitions and scholarship events is incredibly important, as it provides young and emerging musicians with so many opportunities. Firstly, it provides performance experience in an encouraging environment. Playing for both your peers and for expert adjudicators means you not only gain experience performing in all sorts of different venues and learn to manage any bouts of performance anxiety, but you also receive constructive feedback which can improve your playing. Secondly, awards and scholarships can help realise musical endeavours. They can help fund personal development opportunities domestically and overseas, covering musical tuition fees for music festivals, masterclasses, auditions, or even a degree! My performance with The North Sydney Symphony Orchestra was directly linked to winning the 2017 Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award prize, and I will forever be incredibly appreciative of this opportunity. Furthermore, I would not have been able to undertake lessons and auditions in London without the support of a Big Brother Movement scholarship.

What repertoire do you most enjoy playing? I love playing repertoire from the French Impressionist and Russian Romantic periods. It’s a life goal of mine to play through all the piano repertoire of Ravel, Debussy and Prokofiev. I also love playing Australian music. It’s always a delight to catch native birdsong in a melody, or see and hear the evocation of rainforests or bushland. I think it’s incredibly important to champion local contemporary music, and we are lucky that the Australian soundscape is truly unique and special.

You studied both Music and Law at the University of New South Wales. Do you feel there are any challenges to developing a full-time career as a musician in classical music? I still dream of becoming a concert pianist. I took a very realistic approach, however, when deciding what to study at university and in forging my career goals. Only a select few end up on the big stage, and the journey requires many years of freelancing, financial instability, and tough competition. My pragmatic views led me to study two degrees. I thought it would be safe to have a stable back-up plan whilst still being immersed in my true passion. Whilst balancing two degrees was incredibly difficult, studying law has enabled me to think and write critically, skills which have proven useful in my legal and musical academic research. It has also revealed career opportunities at the intersection of music and law, such as in areas of copyright law, which I am particularly interested in.

What’s next for you? I am so pleased to have been offered a significant scholarship to study in the Master of Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I’m extremely excited to move abroad and join a community of extremely talented young musicians who will no doubt inspire me to create music and collaborate on an array of interesting projects. Although I am incredibly sad to part with my beloved piano teacher of ten years, Dr. Bernadette Harvey, who has imparted gems of wisdom to me, I’m excited to work with my new teachers at SFCM. I will hopefully be heading to San Francisco at the end of October, subject to the ever-changing realities of the pandemic. Until then, I will sit tight and keep doing what I love: playing the piano!

Looking Back at the Sydney Olympics 20th anniversary of the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony Written by Nicky Gluch Photo by Penny Tweedle

Penny Tweedie / Alamy Stock Photo

After Richard Mills’ Countdown Fanfare came an arrangement of Bruce Rowland’s The Man from Snowy River. Indigenous culture was celebrated through the segment Awakening with Yolngu elder, Djakapurra Munyarryun, providing the song and Wajarra man Ernie Dingo, the narration.

I’ll let you in on a secret, I was six in the year 2000, and nothing could have been more exciting than that Millennium year. My grandparents had just arrived in the country, the harbour was alight with fireworks and, nine months later, we hosted a remarkable Olympic Games. Sitting in our 90s lounge room, watching the opening ceremony on a square TV, I told my grandparents that now they were officially Australian.

Deep Sea Dreaming was a celebration of our being girt by sea. The music was composed by Elena Kats-Chernin, and the Sydney Symphony and Sydney Children’s Choir were conducted by Simone Young. Who on that night would have thought that the battle for diverse leadership in the arts would have still waged on? Not me. For on that night, a woman conducted, a Malaysian-Australian (Chong Lim) composed, and while the daughter of Sicilian immigrants (Tina Arena) sang, an Indigenous woman (Cathy Freeman) lit the flame.

20 years later, what strikes me about the Millennium was how much of a place the Arts was given in the celebration. The Olympics was heralded not by a sporting event, but by a performance of Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand at the Homebush Superdome. Symphony Australia commissioned Brett Dean to write Amphitheatre, a dramatic scene for large orchestra, and Carl Vine collaborated with the Sydney Dance Company to produce Mythologia, a danced Olympic ode, with Greek text sung by the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir.

On the 20th anniversary of the opening ceremony, we celebrate the music of Sydney’s Millennium. And around the imperfections, we should take inspiration, because Sydney gave the world a dream.

When it came to the opening ceremony itself, music and Australia’s multiple identities (admittedly viewed from a 20th Century lens) were very much at the heart.

Celebrating Alexander Arutiunian From Armenia with love Written by Paul Cooke Photo by Tzolag Hovsepian

Tzolag Hovsepian / Hay Gir Publishing

If Alexander Arutiunian is known at all to audiences outside the former Soviet Union, it is because of his 1950 Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. It is quite possibly the best known trumpet concerto since those written by Haydn and Hummel in the early years of the instrument’s development. Philip Smith, former principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic, has characterised its appeal: “...a flashy piece. It has a very gypsyish, Russian, Armenian kind of sound, with very soulful, beautiful melodies and plenty of exciting rapidtonguing kind of things.” The concerto was written for Arutiunian’s compatriot Zolak Vartisarian, who died in military action before it was finished. It was taken up by the virtuosic and influential Timofei Dokschitzer, who performed it widely and was the first to record it.

Arutiunian was born a century ago, on 23 September 1920, in the Armenian city of Yerevan. He studied piano and composition at the Yerevan conservatory, named for the composer Komitas, who had collected and published folk songs and church melodies, laying the foundations for the development of a classical Armenian style. Komitas, together with fellow Armenians Spendiarian and Khachaturian, had a major influence on Arutiunian’s music. From 1946 to 1948, Arutiunian studied at the House of Armenian Culture in Moscow where he was influenced by the neo-classical and modernist leanings of Prokofiev. At the same time, he took note of the denunciations of some of the works of Prokofiev and Shostakovich by Stalin’s follower Andrei Zhdanov, and made sure that his compositions reflected not only his own Armenian culture but also the mainstream Russian tradition of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov.

09

His graduation piece, Cantata on the Homeland, was conservative enough to win him the Stalin Prize in 1949. Arutiunian spent most of his life in Yerevan, teaching at the conservatory and continuing to compose, including a number of other works featuring brass instruments. An important late composition was his Violin Concerto, inspired by an earthquake which killed 25,000 people. Here his melodic and rhythmic gifts are tempered by introspection and a greater reliance on Baroque and Classical models. Wednesday 23 September at 2pm

DORALBA: Camilla Antonini, mezz STRABINIO: Luca Gallo, bass Bruno Maderna O/Aldo Salvagno. Brilliant Classics 95746 1:17 The impresario Don Grisobolo is planning his next production with the assistance of his librettist Don Perizonio and the composer Gelindo. Their work is made more complicated by the fact that the three prima donnas of the company, Fiordispina, Merlina and Doralba, all have their own ideas of what their characters should do and go to great lengths to tell the composer, the poet and the impresario what should happen. As well as artistic tensions, the company is beset by romance with Doralba being wooed by Strabinio, Merlina courted by the composer, Gelindo, and poor Fiordispina finds herself in a tug-of-war between the attentions of the impresario and the librettist. The fate of the new production is sealed, however, by Don Grisobolo being declared bankrupt. Piano sonata in F, R16. Victor Sangiorgio, pf. Dardanus. Opera in four acts. Libretto by Charles-Antoine Leclerc de la Bruère. First performed Paris, 1739. DARDANUS: John Mark Ainsley, ten IPHISE: Véronique Gens, sop ANTENOR: Laurence Naouri, bass-bar VENUS: Mireille Delunsch, sop TEUCER: Russell Smythe, bass Les Musiciens du Louvre Ch & O/Marc Minkowski. DG 476 725-0 2:36 Venus asks the Pleasures to re-enact the story of Dardanus: Iphise loves Dardanus, her father’s enemy, but is unaware that her feelings are reciprocated. She has to marry Antenor. Ismenor allows Dardanus to assume his appearance in order to help Dardanus pursue his love for Iphise, who then unknowingly confesses her love to the disguised Dardanus. Antenor captures Dardanus, but Neptune sends a sea monster to avenge his imprisonment. Venus comes to the prison to rescue Dardanus and the Dreams tell him to slay the sea monster, which he does, saving Antenor’s life. Not recognising Dardanus in the dark, Antenor gives him a sword. Then Dardanus makes him promise not to force Iphise to marry him. Teucer welcomes Antenor back to his palace, believing that he has killed the sea monster. Antenor is embarrassed. Dardanus appears and Antenor recognises him and renounces his claim to Iphise. Venus appears with her retinue and all are reconciled. Danse des sauvages; Chaconne, from Les Indes galantes (1735-36). Operetta in two acts. Libretto by W.S. Gilbert. First performed London, 1885. Opera Australia OPOZ56016 1:28 Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, disguised as a wandering trombonist, arrives in Titipu looking for his beloved, Yum-Yum, a ward of Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting but is now Lord High Executioner. Pooh-Bah informs Nanki-Poo that Yum-Yum is to marry Ko-Ko that very day. The Mikado has just decreed that unless an execution is carried out in Titipu within a month, the town will be reduced to the rank of a village. Nanki-Poo, in despair over losing Yum-Yum, is preparing to commit suicide. Ko-Ko makes a bargain:

Nanki-Poo may marry Yum-Yum if, at the end of a month, he allows himself to be executed. Ko-Ko would then marry the young widow. Katisha arrives from the court, to claim NankiPoo as her husband. He rejects her and she swears vengeance. It now turns out that the law states that when a married man is beheaded, his wife must be buried alive. Yum-Yum is now unwilling to marry so Nanki-Poo challenges Ko-Ko to behead him on the spot. Ko-Ko instead sends Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum away to be wed and when the Mikado arrives in Titipu, he is presented with a false affidavit of the execution. The Mikado however is searching for his son who ‘goes by the name of NankiPoo’. When Katisha reads Nanki-Poo’s name on the death certificate of the executed man, the conspirators are sentenced to death. Nanki-Poo will only reveal that he is still alive if Katisha is persuaded to marry Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko woos and wins Katisha and she begs for the Mikado's mercy for him and his accomplices. Ko-Ko explains that when a royal command for an execution is given, the victim is, legally speaking, as good as dead and the Mikado agrees. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum then reappear. Everyone in Titipu celebrates. Ballet: Pineapple Poll (arr. Mackerras 1951). Philharmonia O/Charles Mackerras. MRS GROSE: Joan Cross, sop MISS JESSEL: Arda Mandikian, sop PETER QUINT: Peter Pears, ten English Opera Group O/Benjamin Britten. Decca 478 5364 1:45 Based on the famous ghost story by Henry James, the plot tells of young governess who accepts a position as governess to two children on the understanding that she will never contact their guardian. Mrs Grose, the housekeeper, introduces her to the children, Miles and Flora. The governess relates to them immediately, especially to Miles. A letter arrives from Miles’ school, expelling him but not really explaining why. During the night she sees a strange man on a tower in the grounds, and then later sees him looking in through a window. From her description Mrs Grose identifies him as Peter Quint, the guardian’s valet, who ‘made free’ with the previous governess, Miss Jessel. Both seemed inappropriately close to the children. Miss Jessel left and then died, and Quint late died mysteriously on an icy road nearby. The governess becomes worried about Miles when he drifts into a trance-like state during a lesson. Later, by the lake, she becomes aware of the presence of Miss Jessel although Flora claims not to see her. At night the ghosts of Quint and Miss Jessel call to Miles and Flora who slip out to meet them. The governess and housekeeper intervene but don't question the children. Mrs Grose encourages the governess to write to the children's guardian in spite of the prohibition. The governess hesitates, but then sees Miss Jessel in the schoolroom and writes the letter. Miles, egged on by Quint, steals the letter that night and hides it. Next morning Miles distracts the adults by playing the piano so that Flora can go to Miss Jessel by the lake. The women follow. Mrs Grose can't see the ghost but she's sure that something is badly wrong and takes the girl away, then is very frightened by Flora's behaviour overnight. She agrees to take Flora to safety and tells the governess that Miles stole the letter. The governess confronts Miles. Quint pressures Miles not to betray him but Miles blurts out Quint's name. At the mention of his name, Quint's ghost vanishes and Miles falls dead. 22:00 ORCHESTRAL MUSIC OF THE 1980s Prepared by Chris Blower Brumby, C. Bassoon concerto (1982). Harmonia Mundi 74321 98282-2 2:19 Demophon, King of Thrace, asks the oracle how long the custom of the annual sacrifice of a virgin is to continue. The enigmatic reply is that it must occur every year that an ‘innocent usurper’ sits on the throne. His minister, Matusio, does not know that his daughter, Dircea, has secretly married the king’s elder son, Timante, and borne him a child. Equally ignorant of this, the king decrees that Dircea will be sacrificed. Demophon had chosen a foreign princess, Creusa, as the bride for Timante, and she is on her way to Thrace accompanied by Timante’s younger brother, Cherinto. He begins to fall in love with Creusa. When they arrive in Thrace, Timante tells Creusa that he can’t marry her but doesn’t explain why. Enraged, Creusa encourages Cherinto to kill Timante in revenge. About to be sent abroad for her safety, Dircea is seized by guards and taken to the place of sacrifice. Urging Creusa to continue her plan to marry Timante, Demophon tells Timante that Dircea will be freed if he does so. He refuses, and

Demofoonte. Opera seria in three acts. Libretto by Pietro Metastasio. First performed Forli, 1776. DEMOPHON: Andreas Post, ten TIMANTE: Jörg Waschinski, ct MATUSIO: Jan Kobow, ten DIRCEA: Dorothée Mields, sop CREUSA: Marie Melnitzki, sop CHERINTO: Werner Buchin, ct La Ciaccona/Ludger Rémy.

Dircea is condemned to be sacrificed without further delay. Timante vows to fight for her release. Creusa visits Dircea in prison and promises to help the couple. Timante and his followers attempt to liberate Dircea as she is brought to the temple for the sacrifice, only for Timante to be taken prisoner also. He confesses that he has married Dircea and that they have a son. A furious Demophon orders them to be gaoled in separate cells. Cherinto tells Timante that Creusa has persuaded Demophon to grant him and Dircea a pardon. Timante is so happy that he renounces his claim to the throne in favour of Cherinto, thus enabling him to marry Creusa. However, Matusio arrives with a document stating that Dircea is Demophon’s daughter, thereby invalidating her marriage to Timante. A distraught Timante renounces his wife and son, before another document is produced. This declares that his father is not Demophon but in fact Matusio. Hence Timante and Dircea were free to marry all along, and Cherinto is the legitimate heir to the kingdom (and free to marry Creusa). As Timante is no longer the ‘innocent usurper’, the sacrificial tradition can also cease. 22:30 DAY’S END Prepared by Stephen Wilson Kodály, Z. Summer evening (1929-30). Budapest PO/Zoltan Kodály. The Organ Music Society of Sydney Celebrating 70 years of tradition Written by John Hanna Photo by Peter Meyer

Many members were church organists, others were theatre organ aficionados some of whom, like John Clancy and Rod Blackmore, became founders of the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (TOSA) in 1960. Many members played no instrument at all but simply liked organs or organ music.

The Organ Music Society of Sydney was constituted as the Organ Society of Sydney in 1950 and is therefore celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2020. The prime mover in its establishment were, perhaps surprisingly, a doctor, Vincent Sheppard, and an acoustician, Howard Pollard. Both were organ students who wanted to advance the cause of the Organ Reform Movement, which was a reaction against the symphonic organs of the Romantic period, in preference to a return to the historic, classical North German organs which were musical instruments in their own right. It was suggested to them that their goals would have more traction if they represented an organisation rather than acting as a couple of individuals.

Over the years this social/collegial aspect gradually overshadowed the original ambitions of the Society’s founders, and today the Society is an eclectic group of enthusiasts, professionals and students with wide ranging interests and backgrounds. At some point is was decided to change the name of the Organ Society of Sydney to The Organ Music Society of Sydney – largely due to an increasing number of enquiries from the general public about organ transplants! In recent years the Society has recognised that a much greater focus on education and young people is fundamental to the survival of the art form, and a number of national academies have been organised, featuring top level local and international organists and tutors. The fruits of these initiatives are now becoming evident, with alumni from these academies currently holding appointments at major cathedrals in Australia and overseas, including Westminster Cathedral, St Alban’s Cathedral, Truro Cathedral and Hereford Cathedral amongst others. The quarterly Sydney Organ Journal, edited by Peter Meyer, was established from the very beginning, and has evolved to be a highly respected publication that resides in libraries around the world.

Not all of Sydney’s organists were keen on the idea, but support was gained from Colin Sapsford at Christ Church St Laurence and Leonard Bell at St Stephen’s Macquarie Street, with eventual support from Hugh Bancroft at St Andrew’s Cathedral. Hence the Organ Society of Sydney was born for somewhat political reasons. Membership was open to any person interested in the organ and thus the Society began with about 70 members with a wide range of age and educational attainments. The early committees represented the diversity of its membership. They endeavoured to arrange an activity at least once a month, usually recitals in churches but occasionally a party or guest speaker in a member’s home. Opportunities were provided for younger members to gain performance experience and a prize fund was started with a £50 donation from a member. The Society organised dinners to welcome the occasional visiting virtuoso organists brought to Sydney by the ABC.

The Organ Music Society of Sydney is very grateful to maintain a presence on Fine Music Sydney’s Society Spot, compered by John Hanna, at 5pm on the second Saturday of each month.

Jazz Themes

The magic behind our jazz presenters’ theme tunes Written by Keith Pettigrew

Choosing jazz for our Fine Music Sydney audience is exciting and contemplative. Each of our presenters has their own musical preferences from the 120-year history of jazz: 1900s classic jazz; 50s bebop; 60s cool jazz; 90s European and Latin jazz; jazz versions of 21C pop; modern Australian; non-traditional instruments; and emergent jazz for tomorrow. Our Fine Jazz catalogue has 48,000 jazz tracks, some the same with different musicians creating a different feel. And then there are the presenters’ own collections. In this series, we will bring you some of the magic that is jazz, expressed by presenters’ theme tunes.

The New Jazz Standard – Thursdays at 7pm with Frank Presley Theme: Hey Ya! (Outkast -2003) The concept of Frank Presley’s program is jazz interpretations of non-jazz music. Frank was reviewing the album The Blues of Joy by Adam Simmons from Origami. It reminded him of Sonny Rollins’s 1957 Way Out West, when Rollins used only saxophone, bass and drums to transform unlikely pop themes into sophisticated jazz. Simmons chose just the alto saxophone. Nevertheless, he embraced pop without compromising artistic integrity, swing, groove, interplay, or self-expression. “Perfect I thought, a catchy threeminute interpretation of the 1990s chart topper” Hey Ya! by Outkast from Origami. He embraced pop without compromising artistic integrity, swing, groove, interplay, or self-expression. Jazz After Hours – Sundays and Mondays at 10pm Theme: Can’t We Be Friends (Kay Swift, lyrics Paul James -1929)

Jazz Rhythm – Tuesdays at midday with Jeannie McInnes Theme: Rockin’ In Rhythm (Duke Ellington and Harry Carney -1931) Most music has rhythm! But for Jeannie, what makes jazz speak to her whole being, making her move, is the talent of jazz musicians improvising within the melody, so that each rendition of a tune is unique. Jeannie felt her theme tune needed rhythm in name and spirit, and had been recorded by many different performers creating a variety of rhythms. Rockin’ in Rhythm by Ellington and Carney has been recorded by many in the 90 years since the Ellington in 1931, providing a different performer each week. From the original Ellington Orchestra, there are other big bands like the Swedish Harry Arnold Big Band and the Togo Orchestra, small groups like the Modern Jazz Quartet and Oscar Peterson Quartet, individuals like Joe Pass, vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Maxine Sullivan, and very differently Miriam Makeba and Weather Report. For Jeannie, an ultimate example of “… variations on a theme”.

36

Jazz After Hours has a number of presenters with different styles but a common approach to late night jazz. For a theme tune, Sue Jowell (Sundays) suggested the first track from her very first jazz album, which of course was vinyl, and then her very first jazz CD. It was the satin smooth voice of Ella Fitzgerald, the distinctively rough voice of Louis Armstrong, with Oscar Petersen and his trio of Herb Ellis’ guitar, Ray Brown’s bass and Buddy Rich’s drums. Some time ago, Sue was asked to fill in for another of our presenters, “… a big ask and even bigger shoes to fill”. Rather than mimic, she chose her own style. She hoped she would not lose audience, there would be few tracks to enjoy, and that “… we could still be friends”. Now she rejoices, starting each program with Sonny Stitt’s 1951 rendition. “Yes, we can be friends”.

A Life in Music Remembering John Cran Written by James Nightingale Illustration by Lyndon Pike

On 6 April this year, one of Sydney’s most respected wind players, the bassoonist John Cran, passed away at the age of 92. He had been a fixture in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1957 — when he joined as second bassoon — until the mid 1990s, working with chief conductors from Eugene Goossens through to Edo de Waart. Cran became principal bassoonist in 1963 and was still leading the section three decades later. He was the soloist in the SSO’s first performance of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in 1968, which they reprised in 1970, 1975 and 1990. Fittingly, Cran was one of the instrumentalists in the SSO’s 1993 recording of Goossens’ charming Fantasy for Nine Wind Instruments. He was also an inaugural member of the New Sydney Woodwind Quintet, whose other members were Neville Amadio, Donald Westlake, Clarrie Mellor and David Woolley: they toured for Musica Viva, visiting NSW regional centres and other state capitals.

Whether as an AMEB

examiner, a tutor for the Australian Youth Orchestra, or as a colleague

when playing in the SSO, he possessed a gentle authority which brought thoughtful encouragement to every situation.

John Cran was just as busy after he retired from the SSO. He accompanied the Sydney University Graduate Choir (including taking part in Verdi’s Requiem on his 90th birthday) and performed as soloist in Berwald’s Konzertstück with the Balmain Sinfonia. With the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra, he performed frequently as both soloist and rank-and-file player. One of the orchestra’s bassoonists, Graeme Widmer, said: ‘I always made a point of asking him to play with KPO if the first bassoon part was unplayable for the rest of us!’ Cran volunteered his services with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, and was their principal bassoonist for more than 20 years. It was with them that I last saw him play, as late as last year. Willoughby’s conductor, Nicholas Milton has written how “I never ceased learning from his quiet grace, effortless wisdom, inimitable modesty and incomparable human and artistic legacy”. Milton’s words are testament to the impact Cran had across a wide range of musicians, and I was no exception.

Whether as an AMEB examiner, a tutor for the Australian Youth Orchestra, or as a colleague when playing in the SSO, he possessed a gentle authority which brought thoughtful encouragement to every situation. For him, teaching and mentoring always went hand in hand with playing: in his early twenties he had been a tutor at the first music camp in Western Australia held for young people, and this was followed by a lengthy association with the National Music Camp. He was also a worthy recipient of a Churchill Fellowship in 1975, “to investigate various methods in bassoon teaching”. Cran’s love of the bassoon was passed on to his family as well, with his daughter, Lucinda, now working as a bassoonist with the Opera Australia Orchestra. Australia’s musical culture has been the richer for Cran’s presence and we salute the musicianship and character that have brought so much to so many. Friday 11 September at 1pm

Volunteer Spotlight Lyn Chong Written by Pamela Newling Photo supplied by Lyn Chong Illustration by Lyndon Pike

Little did Lyn Chong know when she started piano lessons aged six, that she would become a programmer and presenter at Fine Music. She describes very fond memories of her piano lessons when she first arrived in Australia. “My teacher was a wonderful lady in her 80s, who had a stern look about her that kept my 10-year-old self on best behaviour. I didn’t speak any English then, so there were lots of hand gestures. When I really didn’t get something, she just lifted my hands off the keys, and showed me by playing herself. Compared to the smacking of pens across my fingers back in Korea, this gentle approach was something I got used to quickly. “One time, she lifted my hands off the keys, stood up then walked right out of the music studio. She muttered something on the way out but I couldn’t understand it. I waited, slightly anxious. And then I saw her through the window, feeding the magpies in her backyard. This was culture shock! To top it off, she gave me a new piece to learn, titled Two Little Birds by Frank Hutchens. I adored this piece, and it won me a prize at a local competition. When she was entering me into the competition, she asked me if I wanted to win a trophy or money. In my 10 years with her, this was the only time she laughed out loud – because with a dead straight face, I replied, “money”. Clearly, my English was improving, although I never imagined, that I someday would be on the radio!” Lyn has a full-time career as a community pharmacist. In 2016 she volunteered for a position as a programmer. She says she was pleasantly surprised to get a reply back to her volunteer request, and then even more surprised by what she saw at the station during orientation — the space and the facilities were very impressive. Asked if she would like to try presenting, Lyn says: “I took the opportunity with both hands and, under Maureen Meers’ guidance, passed the audition and have been presenting for FM ever since.”

The opportunity to discover new music and expand her knowledge of music history is something Lyn describes as most satisfying about her involvement with the station. “It is always exciting to present a piece by a composer I have never come across before; I recall doing a program on George Enescu and loved what I heard. I also enjoy presenting works by contemporary composers. ”These days I keep my skills up by playing chamber music with ACMS (amateur chamber music society). Having other people around motivates me to practise!” Also, she comments: “Fine Music is a huge network of volunteers, staff and the wider community. The sense of connection through music and volunteering, especially with the events of this year, feels even more important. I enjoy being a part of that.”

Emerging Artist Sam Gill Working on a jazz pedigree Written by Barry O'Sullivan Photo by Tony Ling

Sam Gill is a saxophonist and composer based in Sydney whose music explores the intersections of composed and improvised music. He appears with his own groups Coursed Waters and Scattered, is a member of the composer-performer collectives Mind on Fire and Microfiche and has duo projects with his brother vibraphonist Brad, electric bassist Joseph Franklin and drummer Simon Barker. “My parents encouraged me to get involved in music from the early age of four. I started on piano and then added saxophone later through the school band program” His early jazz influences at 15 were listening to the all-time great sounds of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Hank Mobley. “ A leading retailer of jazz music had an excess of Blue Note records for sale at the time for about five dollars so I maxed out buying as many as I could.” At the age of 16, he began lessons with the woodwind teacher, Paul Cutlan, a well known and highly regarded player on the Australian jazz scene. After attending live gigs at the Sound Lounge in Sydney organized by the Sydney Improvised Music Association, Sam realised there was a whole community of people involved in the performance of the music he loved. It was fun and he saw a career path in music. “Through listening and exposure to professional musicianship it made sense to me to try to become a part of it,” says Sam. He auditioned successfully for and completed the Jazz Performance Degree course at the NSW Conservatorium of Music, where he also completed a Master of Performance Research Degree and is in his second year of Doctoral research. In 2014 Sam travelled to Berlin and was exposed to improvised music with the local musicians. “There was no jazz hierarchy evident in the scene there. Musicians of varying calibre played together. I was particularly taken with the use of the piano accordion played in jazz with a European Folk influence and decided I wanted to include that in my band Scattered.”

Sam’s music has been platformed by a large number of curated series nationally and internationally. Recent performance highlights include the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, IBeam New York City, and The NOW NOW Festival in Sydney. He also manages and releases his music through his own label Radial Sounds. He’s recently been nominated for a 2020 Freedman Jazz Fellowship by his musical peers and an APRA Art Music Award in the category of Award for Annual Excellence: Experimental Music, for the recording Many Altered Returns, an album of free jazz but also containing selections of refined premeditated, compositional order. Other performance highlights have included appearances at Copenhagen Jazz Festival, the Australian Art Orchestra’s Meeting Points Series, SIMA’s International Women’s Jazz Festival, the Jazzgroove Association Featured Artist series, Converge Festival, Wollongong’s Speak Satellite Festival, and the world music ensemble Mara! Sam has appeared on numerous recordings as a leader/co-leader, including his latest recording, Perspectival by Scattered (2020, Radial Sounds), the Coursed Waters debut Many Altered Returns (Earshift Music, 2019), Mind On Fire’s The Process of Unbecoming (self-released, 2017) and Microfiche’s eponymous debut (self-released, 2016). He’s also heard on the recording of Okay by the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra as lead saxophonist released at the conclusion of the group’s USA tour with Australian guitarist James Muller in 2017.

LISTENERS' LETTERS A Century of Memories

Spring Blossom

Hello at 2MBSFM,

I Want to thank presenter of Jazz programme 12 August 7pm for playing Blossom Dearie...loved her....and rarely heard these days. Thanks

I am writing to you on behalf of my mother Elva May Batt (nee BAIKIE) who is turning 100 on the 14th Sept - next month! Mum is resident in a nursing home and enjoys listening to 2MBSFM classic music. While listening last week she realised she was listening to her own voice and story about her military service in Darwin during WW2. She was utterly thrilled to hear those memories being recalled as both she and husband Barry served in the forces. Mum asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for airing her recollections and as well the wonderful music you put to air that she loves. Listening is a very large part of her day to day life as she has very limited sight. Many thanks Jan Warner, Elva’s daughter

Lorraine

Light & Shade ‘Jazz Pure and Simple’ is an excellent program. ‘Looking in the Rearview Mirror’ and ‘Song and Dance’ are also very good and James Hunter is a superb presenter. Photo courtesy of Jan Warner

Strike Up the Band! Kudos to Mr. Owen Fisher for a lovely celebration of band music today. What a treat! As a former Sousaphone/tuba player, it was marvellous to hear such fine bands perform! Thanks again and may you long continue to produce such great programs.

..and a small brickbat - the ‘sting’ at the end of the jazz program is horrid. I know it only lasts a couple of seconds but it’s like fingernails down a blackboard. Please change it!” Matthew

Fresh Love the fresh new feel of the magazine; it’s lovely.

Another Look at Autumn John Martin Wirripang / Wirr 102

Live at the Sydney Opera House Joseph Tawadros ABC Classics 481 9241

Others Worlds

10 x10 x10 VOLUME1 Johannes Leubbers Dectet

Sydney pianist John Martin’s new album, Another Look at Autumn, features music of a wistful restlessness. The piano sound, recorded in Studio C at Fine Music Sydney, is clear and attractive with a lightness that suits the character of the works. The highlight of the CD for me is the opening track, Miriam Hyde’s Brownhill Creek in Spring, a piano miniature that despite its title fits perfectly with the autumnal spirit of the CD. The world premiere recordings of music by the late John Terry will be of great interest to his many friends and colleagues. Duets with Sally Whitwell (piano four hands) and Victoria JaconoGilmovich (violin) on music by Ann Carr-

Boyd add to the recording as a whole. This recording is one for lovers of piano and those with a passion for supporting Australian music.

Last year, Australian oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros performed a series of concerts with the Sydney Symphony. Now, there is a vibrant live recording that conveys both Tawadros’ virtuosity and his irrepressible character. The music is composed by Tawadros with the exception of one track penned by his brother James, himself a renowned performer on the riqq and bendir, Egyptian percussion instruments. The balance of the mix favours Tawadros’ oud, with the brass sounding a little remote, faults due to the live nature of the performance. It’s hard to quibble with a recording that has such amazing energy,

audible in the enthusiastic applause. The highlight is the wonderful Concerto for Oud, which features a superb dialogue with the orchestra, due in part to the skills of its orchestrator, Jessica Wells, and the adventurous conductor, Benjamin Northey.

This recording of an innovative new body of work for the Johannes Luebbers Dectet began as a project to create ten new works, each a feature for one of the ten musicians in the ensemble, to celebrate ten years since JLD first came together. Each composition was written in dialogue with the featured performer, developing a collaborative approach to jazz composition and exploring how collaborative elements might innovate a composer’s practice. Blending the orchestral colors of flute, cor Anglais and oboe with the jazz sounds of the saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, the

Dectet delivers a truly unique sound. The two lengthy works, Other Worlds and View From the Hill are stand out pieces of composition and performance. This is a highly creative, stylistic and edifying album of music featuring some of the country’s best improvisers.
