NOTES FROM THE ASSISTANT EDITOR

It can be fascinating to find out what a conductor thinks when he considers the composer of the music he conducts. In this month’s Fine Music Magazine, British conductor Mark Wigglesworth talks about Shostakovich in a wide-ranging discussion with Paolo Hooke and looks at who and what influenced the composer. He makes the point that although Shostakovich’s music was at least partially shaped by the political atmosphere in which he lived, this should not necessarily direct what we hear when we listen to his music.

In revisiting the music of Sonny Rollins, saxophonist, composer and improvisor, Louise Levy shows that his work with jazz greats including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk did not preclude a stellar solo career. Always focused on technical mastery and improvement, Rollins at one stage regularly practised on New York City’s Williamsburg Bridge. He also composed works that have since become jazz standards, influencing and continuing to influence generations of jazz musicians.

When you think of the name Kreutzer, chances are you are thinking of the violinist after whom Beethoven named his famous sonata for violin and piano. Andrew Dziedzic looks at the Kreutzer you probably didn’t think of: opera conductor and composer Conradin Kreutzer. You can listen to some of Kreutzer’s music, including his overture from Das Nachtlager in Granada, this month on 2MBS Fine Music.

Melodious, Irresistible and Unique

By 1866, when he was 47, Jacques Offenbach, although born in the Rhineland, had achieved his ambition to become a celebrated French composer. He began his campaign, not with a bang but a whimper, by persuading the Paris OpéraComique to produce his first operetta, Pascal et Chambord. He managed to outlive the disaster, and took himself off to a smaller theatre, the Folies-Nouvelles, where his pieces began to attract audiences. It was not until 1858 that he had his first resounding success: his still popular comic opera Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld)

From then on, Paris waited eagerly for the next Offenbach treat, and Paris was not disappointed. With two collaborators, Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac, to contrive ridiculous plots and witty lyrics, such attractions as La belle Hélène and Barbe-Bleu (Bluebeard) held the stage until the casts pleaded with management to take them off because they were too exhausted to continue performing.

La vie parisienne (Parisian Life), commissioned for the up-market Théâtre du Palais-Royal, was announced for October 1866. Offenbach knew that the resident troupe there consisted mainly of actors rather than singers, so for the star role, he commissioned the famous soprano Zukma Bouffar, who happened to be his mistress, knowing that her popularity would lay the foundations for a success. The cast was not so confident, and chaotic rehearsals suggested disaster. Offenbach had been carried away and written so much music that the first run-through lasted six hours. One of the sopranos with a part in the third act said there was no point in designing a costume for her, because the dress rehearsal wouldn’t get that far. Gabriel Gil-Pérèe refused to learn his part because he knew from the start it would have to be cut and, indeed, one of the five acts vanished completely.

The score was so demanding that the management at first refused to pay for the large orchestra required. Everyone wanted re-writes, which Offenbach found something of a problem because he was already busy writing La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, to star the incomparable Hortense Schneider, the most celebrated mistress of French operetta, and of King Edward VII, who was expected to visit the coming Grand Exhibition.

Despite all the brou-ha-ha, La vie parisienne reached the stage on 31 October and was an immediate triumph, hailed as Offenbach’s masterpiece. The plot is really neither ‘here nor there’, containing the usual suspects of French operetta: no fewer than 26 speaking and singing roles, plus a chorus who bravely continued to sing even after collapsing at the end of the notorious cancan

Delightfully, recent excellent performances of La vie parisienne have been recorded on video, and anyone eager to follow the unfollowable plot can retire to the TV room. But how much better to turn on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney, take a glass of good Australian sparkling or a cup of tea, sit in comfort and just listen to Offenbach at his melodious, irresistible and unique best.

La vie parisienne can be heard on Saturday 30 September at 2:30pm.

The poetry of Die schöne Müllerin

As we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Die schöne Müllerin, the collaboration between the poet Wilhelm Müller and composer Franz Schubert, we should recognize that every German schoolboy knows the enchanted opening line by heart: ‘Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust!’ (Roving is the miller’s delight!).

But it’s not the only reason for the familiarity. The line was reinforced by the 1844 composition of the Leipzig music teacher Carl Friedrich Zöllner who set Müller’s text to music as a four-part choral setting for male chorus, which became one of the bestknown German-language hiking and folk songs.

Schubert’s song cycle embodies the feelings of the young-at-heart, and those feelings clearly had a deep impact on both the poet and the composer.

The Schöne Müllerin poems had appeared in 1821 among a collection entitled Seventy-seven poems from the posthumous papers of a travelling horn-player. Having crafted the words of this cycle, Wilhelm Müller showed his unfulfillment when he said: ‘Indeed, my songs lead only half a life, a paper life of black and white… until music breathes life into them, or at least calls it forth and awakens such as is already dormant in them.’ He went on to say: ‘If I could produce the tunes, my songs would please better than they do now. But courage! A kindred soul may be found who will hear the tunes behind the words and give them back to me’.

Well, that kindred soul was the Austrian composer Franz Schubert, who for the previous 12 years had put music to words with unprecedented skill. As with many of the poems previously used by Schubert, he was selective in their adoption. In the Schöne Müllerin case, Schubert discarded the Prologue and Epilogue as well as three poems because they were repetitive, too long, or diminished the drama.

The young miller’s angst was a mirror image of his own harassed soul – he had been singularly unsuccessful in love, and his medical condition at the time of composing was a direct result of his misguided endeavours to gain experience in this area.

There are three (or possibly four) characters in the drama of Die schöne Müllerin: the young peripatetic miller, the Schöne Müllerin (the beautiful daughter of the mill owner), and the Jäger (the hunter). The possible fourth? Well, as unlikely as it may seem, it’s the Bach (the stream) which brings the other characters together and motivates, and ultimately resolves, the drama. Additionally, in the nineteenth song, Der Müller und der Bach, the stream actually has a voice.

While the poetry obviously works best in the German language and for optimal impact an understanding of German is vital, we can appreciate the language flow, the music, and certainly, the imagery. In fact, colour plays a very important part in the imagery: white (Weiß) for the young miller covered in flour; and green (Grün) for the hunter and the forest.

As the ‘relationship’, if you could call the young miller’s unspoken longing that, turns sour with the Schöne Müllerin expressing interest in the hunter, all he can see is green: in Song No.12, Pause, there’s the green ribbon around his now silent lute; in Song No. 16, Die liebe Farbe (the dear colour), the young miller sees himself cloaked in green, even covered in green in his grave; and in Song No. 17, Die böse Farbe (the hateful colour), the young miller sees green everywhere.

It’s been 200 years since the coalition of Müller’s words and Schubert’s music fulfilled Müller’s wish, but still, we can appreciate the combined artistry that should live for another 200 years.

Sonny Rollins: A towering figure in the world of jazz

Walter Theodore ‘Sonny’ Rollins, born on 7 September 1930 in New York City, emerged as a towering figure in the world of jazz as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. Growing up in the vibrant musical landscape of Harlem, Rollins was influenced by what he heard in iconic venues such as the Savoy Ballroom and the Apollo Theatre. Early jazz legends like Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong ignited his musical passion, leading him to the alto saxophone. However, at the age of sixteen, he made the pivotal shift to the tenor saxophone, inspired by his idol, Coleman Hawkins, and captivated by the rising wave of bebop.

Rollins’ musical journey was greatly shaped by his association with Thelonious Monk, whose mentoring profoundly influenced his artistic direction. Amidst a community of talented musicians including Jackie McLean, Kenny Drew, and Art Taylor, Rollins distinguished himself, collaborating with luminaries such as Babs Gonzales, J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell, and even Miles Davis, before the age of twenty.

During the 1950s, Rollins rose to prominence as a member of Miles Davis’ band, contributing to remarkable albums like Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants. He then embarked on a prolific solo career, releasing a series of groundbreaking albums that showcased his improvisational brilliance. Notably, his album Saxophone Colossus (1956) featured masterful improvisations on tracks like St. Thomas and Blue 7, cementing his position as the preeminent tenor saxophonist of his time.

Rollins’ improvisational approach was characterized by his ability to craft intricate and captivating solos. They often unfolded like narratives, exploring themes that he would deconstruct and reconstruct in real-time. By skillfully employing rhythm, phrasing, and dynamics, he engaged listeners in an immersive musical journey with each performance. Live recordings such as The Bridge (1962) and Our Man in Jazz (1962) captured the vitality and spontaneity of his performances, showcasing his prowess in adapting to the moment.

Beyond his exceptional saxophone skills, Rollins was a prolific composer, contributing a repertoire of original compositions that highlighted his versatility and innovation. Tracks like Oleo, Doxy, and Pent-Up House became jazz standards, frequently interpreted by musicians worldwide. His compositions seamlessly melded elements of bebop, hard bop, and even Caribbean rhythms, reflecting his eclectic musical interests.

Throughout his career, Sonny Rollins remained committed to personal growth and artistic development. In 1959, at the height of his fame, he took a self-imposed sabbatical from recording and performing, dedicating himself to refining his craft by practising on New York City’s Williamsburg Bridge. This period of introspection led to his triumphant return with enhanced musical depth and maturity, exemplified by albums like Next Album (1972).

Louise Levy

Rollins’ influence on successive generations of musicians is immeasurable. His innovative improvisational techniques, drive to push musical boundaries, and commitment to authenticity inspired countless saxophonists and jazz artists. His legacy lives on through players like Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, and Chris Potter, who carry forward Rollins’ legacy of fearless sound exploration and technical mastery.

In acknowledgment of his significant contributions, Sonny Rollins has received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor, and induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Yet, his impact transcends awards, standing as a testament to his enduring influence on the evolution of jazz.

His later albums, such as Road Shows, Vol. 3 (2014) and Holding the Stage: Road Shows, Vol. 4 (2016), showcased his enduring artistry, drawing from live performances over decades. These releases underscored his ability to captivate audiences across generations, reminding us of the lasting brilliance of Sonny Rollins.

The other Kreutzer

When I came across a work by a composer called Kreutzer in the library at 2MBS Fine Music, I assumed that this might be the same Kreutzer after whom Beethoven had named one of his most famous violin sonatas. To my surprise, this particular Kreutzer was another composer altogether! The composer Conradin Kreutzer was born in Germany in 1780, 14 years after violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer was born in Versailles. Rodolphe died in 1831, some 18 years before Conradin.

Rodolphe was foremost a violinist, as well as a composer of 40 operas and a teacher. Conradin was primarily an opera composer and conductor, although he also composed in other genres, his works including piano concertos, lieder, instrumental chamber pieces and choral works. After abandoning legal studies, Conradin met with Haydn in Vienna and likely studied with Albrechtsberger, but his subsequent efforts at the composition of Singspiels met with little initial success. By the age of 30 his successful staging of operas in Stuttgart led to his appointment in 1812 as Hofkapellmeister (court composer), and he married and remained there for four years. In 1816 he was appointed Kapellmeister to the regional Prince in Donaueschingen, but there he felt as if he was lost in a backwater. So, from 1822 until 1827, and from 1829 until 1832, he held the post in Vienna as Kapellmeister to the Kärntnertortheater, a prestigious post, as the theatre’s official title was the Imperial and Royal Court Theatre of Vienna.

He then moved to a suburban Vienna theatre in der Josefstadt where he stayed from 1833 to 1835, staging his two greatest operatic successes, Das Nachtlager in Granada and Der Verschwinder

Kreutzer returned to his post at the Kärntnertortheater for a few years and was subsequently music director in Cologne from 1840 until 1842. His career focus then turned to the support of his talented daughter Marie, who was a singer, accompanying her and touring with her. Sadly, when he accompanied his daughter to an important engagement in Riga in 1849, her voice broke down and she was dismissed. He suffered a stroke soon after, and died within a few days, aged 69.

His two operas Das Nachtlager in Granada and Der Verschwender have had periodic revivals (the latter mostly in Austria), and some of the arias from those operas as well as several of his songs continue to be performed.

On Monday 4 September at 2:30pm you can tune in to The other Kreutzer on 2MBS Fine Music, when you can hear the overture from Das Nachtlager in Granada and some of his sensitive song settings of the Swabian poet Uhland. You can also listen to what is probably his most highly esteemed chamber work, his Grand septet in E flat for clarinet, horn and string quintet, op 62, in an excellent recording by the Nash Ensemble.

High Five: Hamed Sadeghi

Barry O’Sullivan talks with the tar player and composer

Born in Iran, Hamed Sadeghi is an acclaimed multi-award winner Persian-Australian tar player and composer known for his innovative blend of Persian classical music with Western contemporary and jazz music. Hamed has performed on a variety of projects as well as performing solo on the tar.

When did jazz first enter your musical life and what artists influenced your style?

I fell in love with jazz after first hearing Keith Jarrett when I was in my twenties. His solo piano concerts resonated with me, and I started exploring others. I also love the energy in Thelonious Monk’s music. The more I listened to jazz, the more I felt a connection to it. For me, jazz, in the beginning, was something that I didn’t understand, but it felt right. Middle Eastern artists have also had an impact on me. The well-known kamancheh player Keyhan Kalhour and the oud player Anouar Brahem made the jazz world more familiar to me.

What are your current musical projects?

I am currently developing a new project called Empty Voices, a dialogue between the tar and a horn section. The project features some prominent Australian jazz figures – Sandy Evans on soprano and tenor saxophone, Lloyd Swanton on double bass, Paul Cutlan on bass clarinet and my long-term collaborator Michael Avgenicos on alto saxophone along with his brother Thomas Avgenicos and the percussionist Adem Yilmaz. We have already performed this project at the ACO’s The Neilson and Sydney Opera House and have had four sold-out concerts since early this year. We will be touring this project later this year and then releasing the album.

I am also working on a new project with my quartet, the Eishan Ensemble. We plan to tour overseas later this year and Australia early next year. I have been working on some dance and film projects recently and I am creating music for choreographer Ryuichi Fujimura’s ballet to be performed by the Sydney Dance Company. I have also composed music for Tennessine, a film directed by Amin Palangi that premiered at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival.

Since moving to Australia what are some of the challenges that have confronted you musically and how have you overcome them?

Australia is a wonderful place to live in. On arrival in Australia, I found it to be a most welcoming country. Any apprehension that I had immediately disappeared. My biggest challenge was that it was too quiet for me, coming from a hectic place like Tehran. Playing a non-conventional instrument for audiences who were not accustomed to hearing it was a big challenge initially. But the more performances I did, the more comfortable I felt doing it. Initially, my solo tar performances attracted only Iranian and middle eastern audiences. Now I get a far greater range of audience at my solo concerts.

12

بزن قدش

What are some of your other interests apart from performing music?

I enjoy watching films, reading and swimming and I have also started learning French. I often go to see dance and the theatre and go to the Belvoir Theatre to see productions regularly. I love having my coffee at a café that I know well, and I enjoy going back to the same café for lunch every day.

It’s five o’clock on a Sunday afternoon and you want to relax listening to some of your favourite music. What would you listen to?

I would enjoy listening to some easy mellow music like the Tord Gustavsen Trio. It just feels good. I love most Scandinavian jazz and it’s the right feel for a Sunday afternoon.

Mark Wigglesworth on Dmitri Shostakovich

British conductor Mark Wigglesworth has conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, and New York Philharmonic. Wigglesworth has recorded the complete Shostakovich symphonies with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, to critical acclaim.

Prevailing attitudes towards Shostakovich seem to have shifted; from the possibility of satire and dissent to audiences being invited to make up their own minds. My opinion is that Shostakovich was a secret dissident who expressed protest against Stalin’s Terror and the regime through coded language of irony and satire. I would be fascinated to hear your views on Shostakovich.

Shostakovich was able to use the emotional ambiguity of music to express emotions and thoughts that would not have been tolerated in more explicit artistic genres. Many of his literary friends, for instance, were imprisoned or shot for publishing opinions that we know Shostakovich agreed with. Music gave him the opportunity to articulate the fear, the loneliness, the anger, the depression, that so many in the audience could relate to. But his works also express courage, hope, resilience, acceptance, human dignity and compassion, and it is these positive forces that meant so much to so many, and still do today.

I vividly remember your performances in August 2019 when you conducted the Sydney Symphony in Shostakovich’s Symphony no 4. For me the unforgettable ending featuring harp, strings and celesta brings specific images to mind, of prisoners tapping on their cells. It is said Shostakovich was in the midst of writing the symphony’s final movement when the notorious articles in Pravda were published. What do you think that Shostakovich is conveying here? Does his music spark a particular imagery in your mind?

One could come up with all sorts of images for specific moments in Shostakovich’s works. Although that has value for each individual, I think sharing my own view of what those images might be limits the imagination of people listening, people who could feel drawn to my own specifics in a way that denies their own individual response. So, though it helps me to have a clear extra-musical idea of what any particular moment might be about, I prefer to keep that to myself and hope my own specificity enables it in others even if it is not the same!

The notorious Pravda article – which was all but a virtual death sentence for Shostakovich – did indeed appear during the composition of the 4th Symphony. Where exactly is hard to tell, as Shostakovich would often compose an entire symphony in his head before committing it to paper, but whatever the exact moment, it was clearly not the time to have this piece performed. Shostakovich put it in a drawer in the hope that the time would one day come when it could be heard without the fatal consequences that would have undoubtedly come in the 1930s. And yet it is significant that Shostakovich called his next Symphony his 5th, thereby admitting that there was a 4th, albeit one that was not to be performed. He was not stupid enough to blatantly flout the government’s demand for populist music, yet he was brave enough not to pretend that he had not written something subversive.

Paolo Hooke talks with the eminent British conductor about Shostakovitch

PRISMA ARCHIVO / Alamy Stock Photo

The music of Shostakovich’s youth is full of irreverent wit and irresistible tunefulness, such as the Hypothetically Murdered Suite. Why is Shostakovich’s early stage and theatre music relatively unknown?

I think the early theatre pieces are very much of their time. I am not sure if theatrical aesthetics and conventions stand the test of time as much as music. It feels a little dated to us now, theatrically speaking, and though the music maintains its brilliance and wit, there is less appetite for the dramatic conventions of a hundred years ago.

The Pravda censure derailed Shostakovich’s blossoming career as a composer of opera and ballet. What composer do you think Shostakovich would have become without the Pravda condemnation? This is a fascinating question. Stalin’s intervention forced Shostakovich to express himself in a much more accessible way than he would otherwise have done. Without this change in direction he may well have become an even more interesting composer but, inevitably, would have had less popular appeal. There is no classical composer who has written more symphonies in the mainstream concert repertoire. Though two or three of his symphonies are not performed regularly, that still leaves a dozen or so that are considered staples of concert hall programmes around the world. That is more than the number Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Mahler have performed on a regular basis. So, one could argue that the compromises he made as a musician have been outweighed by the mass appeal urged upon him by the dictator. It is ironic that Stalin’s attempts to shut Shostakovich down merely served to increase the composer’s popularity, and spread far and wide the knowledge of how Stalin’s reign of terror affected so many millions.

16

Do you think it’s essential to understand the historical context and the composer’s circumstances when listening to Shostakovich?

I think music benefits from a performer’s understanding of the circumstances surrounding the composition of the piece, both the personal situation of the composer and of those who would have been in the audience. But a concert is not an illustrated history lecture and ultimately music has to speak on its own terms. Audiences can listen to Shostakovich’s music without any knowledge of his situation and allow it to speak to them in whatever way they choose. The emotions Shostakovich expresses and the journeys he takes us on are not unique to the twentieth-century history of Russia. The music was inspired by its context, but its reach is far wider, and all the greater for that.

Do you think that there is renewed interest in Shostakovich as a composer?

If yes, what are the major reasons for this interest?

Time has shown that Shostakovich’s music can be appreciated away from the specifics of his own time. This is because there will always be dictators and suffering, oppression and protest, isolation and hope, but also because a little distance on from Shostakovich’s life we see that his music does stand up on its own and can be analysed and enjoyed as pure music, as well as within personal and political frameworks.

Do you take a particular approach to conducting Shostakovich compared to other composers?

There is a level of extreme in Shostakovich that is greater than most other composers. The intensity has to be of the same unbelievable degree as the situations that inspired it. When you read about what was happening to Shostakovich and his contemporaries it beggars belief that such atrocities occurred within many of our lifetimes. The musical performances have to honour that horror, that absurdity. My job as a conductor is to try to persuade large numbers of musicians to match that height of emotion and of course one always fails because it can never be enough. Not really. No musical performance can be as terrible as the experiences of those it is describing. Even coming close to it is exhausting and draining. So as I get older, I am doing less and less of his music simply because it isn’t easy to keep trying to reach that pinnacle of emotion every time. Brahms is wonderful too! And if you cannot do justice to Shostakovich the man and times, I think it better not to try. He and his situation deserve the very best from us and the circumstances in which one can achieve that are not always in your control. “Going there” is an essential part of performing Shostakovich, but it does not come without cost.

Shake Rattle And Roll: Vibrato In Jazz

18

One of the most controversial topics in singing is vibrato. When asked to think about vocal vibrato, it wouldn’t be surprising if a Wagnerian opera singer was what came to mind. Vocal vibrato, however, is not exclusive to opera and is a feature of vocal music across genres.

What I am particularly interested in is the use of vibrato in jazz singing. There is a popular perception that “terminal vibrato” (vibrato that occurs at the end of a sustained note) is the most stylistically appropriate way to use vibrato in jazz. However, there is a growing body of research that shows vibrato is used in a myriad of ways by great jazz singers.

What is Vibrato?

From the Latin vibrare, meaning ‘to shake’, vibrato is defined in The Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments as a ‘regular fluctuation of pitch or intensity (or both), either more or less pronounced and more or less rapid.’ In Western music, vibrato is understood as a technique to ornament a note, a device to colour an instrument’s overall timbre, a way that expression can be encoded into sound, or, in vocal music, a technique of tone production.

When do we use Vibrato?

It’s widely accepted that vibrato occurs naturally when vocalists sing with freedom and good technique, and this is true regardless of genre. However, the exact characteristics of a singer’s vibrato are unique and there is broad variation in how and when vibrato is applied across genres. There are competing opinions on what is considered tasteful use of vibrato, and factors including a vocalist’s sex, nationality, artistic influences, and what is being sung can all impact how an individual’s vibrato sounds and when it is used. In classical genres, we expect to hear vibrato most of the time as it is an integral part of classical singing technique. This is not necessarily the case with other genres.

Why do we use Vibrato?

There are hypotheses about other reasons vocalists use vibrato across genres, beyond it simply being a manifestation of what is currently understood as good technique in classical singing. Some theories are practical in nature, such as the idea that vibrato stabilises the pitch, or that vibrato helps listeners discern the voice from instrumental accompaniment. This is particularly relevant in contexts such as Wagnerian opera. Some theories relate to artistic prerogatives: for example, that vibrato conveys emotion, or that vibrato changes the timbre of the sound. The reason an artist uses vibrato could be due to any one of these reasons, or even a combination of them.

What about Jazz?

The use of vibrato in jazz singing is by no means uniform across singers, subgenres, or eras. So-called “natural vibrato” was accepted as a conventional jazz sound in the 1930s and 1940s, but this changed with the introduction of microphones and amplification. Bebop ushered in a new mode of jazz singing where beauty of tone was not necessarily the goal. Some vocalists such Annie Ross used little vibrato, whereas singers like Sarah Vaughan had vibrato that was flexible in its size, shape, and duration.

Readers can listen to Annie Ross’ Sings a Song with Mulligan (1959) and Sarah Vaughan’s Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (1955) to compare the difference in timbre and vibrato. Vibrato is an essential device for musical expression, and it is an essential tool in every singer’s musical arsenal. Respected American musician, historian and educator Gunther Schuller described vibrato as a fundamental way in which jazz musicians colour and individualise their sound.

Why do we care?

By better understanding the possibilities of vocal vibrato in jazz singing, vocalists are empowered with more tools to use in their expressive toolkit and new artistic possibilities in their music-making. In short, it helps us produce beautiful music in new ways! I am exploring using vibrato in different ways in my own music making, challenging myself to use it in places I may not instinctively be inclined to, and, vice versa, not use it in places where it might be expected and then seeing what the artistic result is.

Next time you’re listening to your favourite jazz singer, take a moment to notice the colour of their sound, and notice how they use vibrato – it might surprise you.

Volunteer SpotlightLynden Dziedzic

What influenced you to volunteer with Fine Music?

My husband Andrew was already a volunteer, and I could see the immense pleasure and satisfaction he derived from being involved. The thought of working “behind the scenes” in the library appealed and I have been there for over twelve years under the amazing Sue Ping-Kee. When I first joined, I was involved in the ripping of LPs – now half the CDs I enter into the library catalogue are digital downloads.

Does your librarian role link to your career?

No. I was a teacher of Literacy/Numeracy/ ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) at TAFE for twenty years. However, part of my teaching role involved writing curriculum materials and resources. The persistent attention to detail that required proved valuable for my library work.

Where does your love of music come from?

I grew up hearing classical music records and attending occasional concerts at Sydney Town Hall. At school I loved playing recorder and then the oboe. At university I met Andrew and we explored our common love of music.

Do you play an instrument?

I took up the recorder again about fifteen years ago when I broke my foot and was home-bound. I rediscovered my love of the instrument and, once I joined the Sydney Society of Recorder Players, experienced the immense pleasure of playing various recorders, ranging in size from sopranino to great bass. The SSRP is a fabulous organisation which holds monthly meetings/workshops with professional tutors. On a fifth Sunday of the month, listeners can enjoy a program of recorder music, programmed and presented on behalf of the SSRP by Robert Small and Susan Foulcher – always a delight!

What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the station?

I enjoy the challenge of trying to ensure the data entered into the catalogue is as accurate

as possible. Delving into Grove and the internet, I gain new understandings about composers, pieces, performers and instruments (hubcaps – who would have thought it?). I also have the pleasure of listening to recent releases as I do so. Plus of course there is the camaraderie of being in the library – and if Jacky Ternisien supplies one of his cakes, even better!

Music favourites?

All baroque, but especially works by JS Bach and Handel, and recorder music, from medieval galliards to Telemann sonatas. I enjoy attending concerts by Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Salut Baroque and Consort 8.

Do you have time for other interests outside Fine Music?

With five grandchildren under the age of six, and all their parents working, grandparent duties at present are all consuming. This gives us enormous pleasure, plus it allows us the opportunity to expose them to a bit of Bach! We love bushwalking and try to do a multi-day walk every year, in Australia or overseas. I need a carrot to get me exercising. This year’s carrot is the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand. Quite a challenge!

CD REVIEWS

Shadows and Light Divergence Jazz Orchestra

Maintaining and sustaining a large-scale jazz orchestra is no mean feat. Born in Sydney’s inner-west in 2012, the nineteenpiece Divergence Jazz Orchestra has been performing, recording and promoting original Australian music since their inception under the bandleader/composer Jenna Cave. Their third studio album consists primarily of eight original instrumental pieces, with a sprinkling of vocal solo contributions from Marie Le Brun on This Too Shall Pass, and centring on Paul Cutlan’s composition The Darkness of Silence, commissioned by Divergence in 2016. The Miroslav Bukovsky classic Delicatessence graces the album with variety and dignity alongside his lesser-

known gem, For Woody, happily included and given the note that it deserves with deftly accomplished solos from Paul Cutlan (soprano sax), James Power (trumpet) and David Regular (tenor sax). Stand-out compositions such as Andrew Scott’s Willoway, with Will Gilbert soloing on flugelhorn, and Caves’ Orange and Olive Trees, display the bandleader’s unique gift in creating a varied, subtle mix of repertoire with immense breadth, range and openness. The results are a modern-day testimonial to the big band tradition with an indelible organic recording that is bound to please its followers.

In Flight

Move Records

Harold Gretton is an Australian guitarist who performs solo and in a number of chamber music ensembles. He currently teaches at the Riverina Conservatorium of Music in Wagga Wagga. In Flight is his first album for Move Records, and sees him present compositions from the Baroque lutenist Weiss through to compositions by Gretton himself. The recital begins with a couple of pieces from the 19th century, by Sor and Mertz, and includes a number of works by 20th century Latin American composers. There are two five-movement compositions: The Prince’s Toys (1980), by the Russian-born Nikita Koshkin,

who is regarded as having “opened up a completely new world of sound for the guitar”, with glissandi, scratching of fingernails on strings, and other effects; and Flock, by Gretton himself, which seems more reflective of the behaviour of the various birds depicted than of their song. The final work, Inarticulate Music, is also by Gretton. With its echoes of the piano music of Erik Satie, it is a fittingly meditative conclusion to some of the pyrotechnics that have preceded it.

Driven by genre-fusing ardour, with the inclusion of warped, shaped sounds, the ethnic intrusions and Eastern tangents of vocalised rhythmic syllables (Konakol), with instruments plus electronics, Bungarribee jazz quartet leans on solid ground while moving in mysterious ways between music of the jazzinfused avant-garde and classical. Embracing different genres, grooves and intensities, they have released a lovely recording that embraces openheartedness and positive expression. Led by pianist Gary Daley, who remains one of the most accomplished exponents on the scene and adapts with remarkable prowess to classic jazz environments as well as these more modern contexts, the quartet deliver a dozen original pieces alongside additional material from Bartok and Schoenberg, hinging on interaction to express their creativity. The bevy of piano

sounds with modular synth curlicues, growling multiphonic blows, winding cello patterns ranging in pitch, rattling percussion, and murmuring sax notes reinforce the harmonic background. Bartok’s Notturno from Mikrokosmos IV hits the sweet spot of chamber music with its classical intonation and scintillating melodic conduction. Cleverly, the quartet adds elements of surprise, creating the highlight tracks of their album, The Waiting Room, Interior Mountains, and Currawong. These are a testament to Bungarribee’s power of collaboration and sound arrangement as an art form. Their other works, constructed according to their musical freedom, open a narrative, with Bungarribee assuredly knowing where they are stepping on their sonic path of sound discovery.

Verdi, G. I due Foscari. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Byron's play The two Foscari. First performed Rome, 1844.

JACOPO FOSCARI: José Carreras, ten LUCREZIA: Katia Ricciarelli, sop

FRANCESCO FOSCARI: Piero Cappucilli, bar

JACOPO LOREDANO: Samuel Ramey, bass Orff Symphony Ch & O/Lamberto Gardelli.

Philips 422 426-2 1:44

After returning to Venice, the son of the Duke, Jacopo Foscari, is facing trial for murder by the Council of Ten for murder. While the Council deliberates, Jacopo’s wife, Lucrezia, is told of the situation and begs to see the Duke, Francesco Foscari, Jacopo’s father. News of the Council’s decision to exile Jacopo reaches Lucrezia and she begs her father-in-law to act. In gaol, Jacopo laments his fate, having no confidence in the mercy of the Council of Ten, that he claims has only hatred in its heart. He is visited by his wife, who begs to be allowed to follow him into exile, and father, whose heart is riven by his love for his son and his duty to uphold the law. Jacopo’s enemy, Loredano, arrives to deliver the verdict of the Council of Ten and refuses to allow Lucrezia to accompany her husband into exile. After Jacopo is taken from Venice, Francesco receives proof of his son’s innocence, closely followed by news of his death. Loredano arrives to tell Francesco that ‘due to his age’, the Council of Ten demands that he resign his position as Duke. With heart broken and duty removed, Francesco dies.

wed and when the Mikado arrives in Titipu, he is presented with a false affidavit of the execution. The Mikado however is searching for his son who ‘goes by the name of NankiPoo’. When Katisha reads Nanki-Poo’s name on the death certificate of the executed man, the conspirators are sentenced to death. Nanki-Poo will only reveal that he is still alive if Katisha is persuaded to marry Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko woos and wins Katisha and she begs for the Mikado's mercy for him and his accomplices. Ko-Ko explains that, when a royal command for an execution is given, the victim is, legally speaking, as good as dead and the Mikado agrees. Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum then reappear. Everyone in Titipu celebrates.

Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado, disguised as a wandering trombonist, arrives in Titipu looking for his beloved, Yum-Yum, a ward of Ko-Ko. Ko-Ko was condemned to death for flirting but is now Lord High Executioner. Pooh-Bah informs Nanki-Poo that Yum-Yum is to marry Ko-Ko that very day. The Mikado has just decreed that unless an execution is carried out in Titipu within a month, the town will be reduced to the rank of a village. Nanki-Poo, in despair over losing Yum-Yum, is preparing to commit suicide. Ko-Ko makes a bargain: Nanki-Poo may marry Yum-Yum if, at the end of a month, he allows himself to be executed. Ko-Ko would then marry the young widow. Katisha arrives from the court, to claim NankiPoo as her husband. He rejects her and she swears vengeance.

Corinth in the reign of Hadrian. Briséïs, a young girl is passionately in love with the pagan mariner Hylas who sets off to find his fortune in Syria. Before he departs, he and Briséïs swear to Aphrodite to love each other beyond death.

Thanastô, her gravely ill mother, is determined that Briséïs should give up Hylas and convert to Christianity as she has done. The Catechist arrives and prays for Thanastô, telling Briséïs that, if she follows him, her mother will be saved. Thanastô promises that her daughter will remain a virgin 'in eternity, a bride of God'. Briséïs agrees and follows the Catechist. Hylas, shipwrecked on the spot where Briséïs has been baptised, reminds her of their vow. Briséïs kills herself and then calls upon Hylas to join her. Breathing the deadly scent of the flowers she offers him, he does, to the wonder of Christians and pagans.

Fête polonaise, from Le roi malgré lui (1887). Suisse Romande O/Ernest Ansermet.

One day the French troupe, to which Duval formerly belonged, arrives. As a deserter, Duval would be shot but he has a brilliant idea. He says that he has maintained his post as a border guard for four years. The captain of the French troupe doesn’t believe him and sends him for a court-martial. However, the General appears, believes Duval's story and ensures that he is honourably discharged from the army. Duval returns to his wife, Kate, and his life as a farmer.

Monteverdi, C. The return of Ulysses. Opera in a prologue and three acts. Libretto by Giacomo Badoaro after Homer’s Odyssey First performed Venice, 1639.

PENELOPE: José Maria lo Monaco, mezz ULYSSES: Anicio Zorzi Giustinani, ten MINERVA: Roberta Mameli, sop TELEMACO: Makoto Sakorada, ten La Venexiana/Claudio Cavina.

Glossa GCD 920920 2:52 Penelope remains true to her husband Ulysses, King of Ithaca, although he has been absent for ten years. She is under pressure to choose one of three suitors. Ulysses arrives back in Ithaca and learns of her plight but the goddess Minerva promises that he will regain his throne if he follows her advice to adopt a disguise as a beggar. Minerva departs in search of Telemaco, the son of Ulysses. In a woodland grove Penelope meets Ulysses in his disguise as a beggar. Telemaco arrives and an unexpected bolt of fire strikes the disguise away from Ulysses, revealing him to his son. Ulysses sends Telemaco to the palace promising to follow shortly. The three suitors plot to kill Telemaco.

Penelope now declares that she will accept whichever suitor is able to string the bow of Ulysses. The three suitors are unsuccessful but the disguised Ulysses succeeds. He then kills all three with his bow but Penelope continues her mourning for Ulysses. The gods now decide that Ulysses should be restored to his throne and Penelope is convinced that her husband has returned. Reunited, the couple sings rapturously to celebrate their love.

AT THE OPERA

From literature

Prepared by Camille Mercep

Cornelius, P. The barber of Bagdad. Opera in two acts. Libretto by the composer after The Tale of the Tailor and The Barber's Stories of his Six Brothers in One Thousand and One Nights. First performed Weimar, 1858.

NUREDDIN: Nicolai Gedda, ten

MARGIANA: Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, sop

CADI: Gerhard Unger, ten

BOTSANA: Grace Hoffman, mezz

ABDUL HASSAN: Oskar Czerwenka, bass

CALIPH: Hermann Prey, ten Philharmonia Ch & O/Erich Leinsdorf.

EMI 5 65284 2 1:39

Nureddin is hopelessly in love with Margiana, the daughter of the Cadi. Botsana, a relative of the Cadi and Nurredin’s friend, tells him that Margiana has agreed to meet him at noon, but that he should smarten himself and see the barber, Abdul Hassan. The talkative barber is more interested in telling stories than shaving Nuredin, who finally manages to get away to keep his assignation. Abdul follows him secretly to the Cadi’s house.

Meanwhile, the Cadi tells Margiana that his friend, Selim, has offered a chest of gold in return for her hand and she leaves for the mosque. Nurredin arrives and declares his love. The lovers are interrupted with the unexpected return of the Cadi. Margiana empties the treasure chest and uses it to hide Nurredin. Abdul who has heard the cries of a slave being beaten, thinks his friend is dead and the body hidden in the chest. He calls for the Caliph to investigate in person. The Caliph arrives and orders the chest opened, revealing Nurredin very much alive. The Cadi gives way to the pressure from the Caliph and the two lovers are reunited. The barber is arrested by the Caliph, who wants to hear more stories.

Three duets, op 6 (1861-62). Christine Landshamer, sop; Hans Christoph Begemann, bar; Matthias Veit, pf.

Offenbach, J. La vie parisienne. Operetta in four acts. Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. First performed Paris, 25 September 1873.

LADY MacDONALD: Ingrid Kaiserfeld, sop

LORD MacDONALD: Michael Glücksmann, barRAOUL de GARDEFEU: Andreas Schindler, ten

arrives on the arm of another, they resolve to find a better class of mistress. Gardefeu’s former servant, Joseph, now working for the Grand Hotel, arrives to fetch an English lord and his wife. Gardefeu takes one look at the delectable Lady MacDonald and bribes Joseph to change places. He escorts the couple to his own townhouse, telling them it’s an annexe of the Grand Hotel, and lodges them in well-separated bedrooms. This suits his lordship, as his idea of a good time in Paris involves becoming acquainted with Métella, whose reputation has crossed the Channel. Gardefeu plans to beguile Lord Macdonald with an elaborate dinner and then somehow get him out of the way, leaving himself a clear field with her ladyship. A hapless bootmaker and glover, arriving to deliver their goods, find themselves posing as a major and a colonel’s widow, with a tableful of hurriedly assembled 'friends’. A remarkably good time is had by all and, after this, Bobinet hosts an intimate gathering at his absent aunt’s townhouse. Servants turn into fashionable guests, Bobinet becomes an admiral, with the chambermaid as his wife, her task being to seduce Lord MacDonald. However, Métella, anxious to win back Gardefeu, joins forces with her ladyship, who wants to extricate her husband from the perils of Parisian life. All’s well that ends well; c'est la vie parisienne!
