A new youth orchestra, the Western Sydney Philharmonic, was launched in February. To be known as the West Phil, its official home will be the Parramatta Town Hall, but it will play on concert stages from Penrith to Campbelltown to the Blue Mountains. It joins an expanding (and sometimes confusingly titled) collection of orchestras catering for the increasing appetite for classical music in the Western suburbs, some of which are further from Parramatta than Vaucluse. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Lord Mayor of Parramatta said that the establishment of West Phil will “help foster a new generation of professional performers and, with the pending redevelopment of Riverside Theatres, will help lift Parramatta’s profile as the premier arts and cultural precinct outside the Sydney CBD”. The Riverside development will certainly help, but as Fine Music presenter and music educator Julie Simonds says, “it’s not only a question of tutoring and mentoring young musicians, it’’s about the lack of suitable venues in the Western suburbs for the orchestras to perform in.” In this month’s issue, Catherine Peake talks to the orchestra’s founders, Artistic Director Kristian Winther and Chair Max Holzner about their plans for the new venture. david.ogilvie@finemusicsydney.com

Ruddygore with a Y Angela Cockburn looks at the original version of a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera.
The opera directly followed the smash hit The Mikado and it opened to mixed reviews. Some changes were made along with the name change, and the season rolled on, but somehow the idea got around that it was a failure. Gilbert firmly quashed that idea: “We were credited, or discredited, with one conspicuous failure, Ruddigore, or The Witch’s Curse. Well, it ran eight months and, with the sale of the libretto, put £7,000 into my pocket.” D’Oyly Carte, too, wasn’t arguing with full houses. So why the problems? As far as the actual performances go, at opening Grossmith was ill and Leonora Braham was newly pregnant and not at her best, so that may have had something to do with it. But mostly it was the second act. Even then, everyone loved the newly reformed Sir Despard and Mad Margaret (Jessie Bond in a role with real emotional depth). But the interval was long, as the elaborate picture gallery was set up, and it didn’t really work effectively as an entire chorus shuffled into place. What’s odd is that at the time the technology existed to do this well; transformation scenes had been a theatrical staple for well over a century, and Pepper’s Ghost’s effect had been around for a while. The most innovative technology seems to have been the light on Sullivan’s baton in the darkened scene. On top of that, the heroine is a prig, and the tenor, whom you expect to be a hero, is a cad, and unlike Mad Margaret and the Murgatroyd family, neither has much of a story arc and neither is very likeable; their running gags are a bit thin by Act II and I think that’s the real heart of the problem.
Our operetta this month is a very special performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddygore. Yes, that’s Ruddygore with a “y”. I’m sure you’ll remember the story: when it was advertised there was mild public outcry at the inclusion of a swearword in the title, so the spelling was changed to Ruddigore. If you happen to own an original poster, or better still the first night programme which had the original spelling, you’ve probably got quite a valuable souvenir.

The music is another matter: there’s a splendid operatic mad scene, a clever patter song sending up patter songs, and of course the spooky and highly dramatic Ghosts’ High Noon. So, did the changes made under pressure really improve things? The short-lived New Sadler’s Wells company decided to find out, and with the help of scholar David Russell Hulme put on a production restored to its original first night form. That’s what we’re going to hear on Saturday 30 April at 2.30 pm. And if you join me for Ruddygore with a Y, I’ll tell you what Gilbert really said about the name change. Baroque Dance Suites
Developing throughout the 17th century, a standard set of contrasting dances came to be recognised as a suite: Allemande (German, moderate, duple metre), Courante (French, quick, triple metre), Sarabande (Spanish, slow, triple metre) and Gigue (English, lively and fast, duple metre). The dances were played in that order, which was probably established by early Baroque composer Johann Jakob Froberger, or possibly by his publisher working in the interests of standardisation.
As a popular form of music during the Baroque, the dance suite emerged from the medieval period as music to play and listen to rather than dance to. Rapidly settling into a format of several dances linked by the same key, the dance suite proved to be as popular with composers as with listeners. Most composers of the era produced dance suites, and many are still played and listened to today.
The format of the suite was later expanded to include other dances such as the popular Minuet, the Bourrée and the Gavotte, which were also formulaic but allowed a broader scope for the composer. Liberties could be taken with dance titles and the order in which they were played, with the suite itself known as a partita in Germany and sonata da camera in Italy. It could also have its own title as with Handel’s Water Music.
The first compositions to be recognised as dance suites started to appear in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Moving on from the casual Medieval and Renaissance habit of playing a couple of dances back-to-back, it gradually came to mean a set of dances played as one piece. Each separate dance had its own characteristic tempo and metre, and each was attributed a country of origin.

The popularity of the dance suite came about primarily through its reception in domestic settings as a form of entertainment and often participation. The performances could be managed by amateurs in their own homes and became an important part of the social life of the times. Suites were composed for solo instruments such as harpsichord and lute, as well as for small groups and larger ensembles. The keyboard proved to be a popular instrument for the genre, with François Couperin publishing four books of suites (which he called ordres) for harpsichord, and Handel writing more than 20 keyboard suites. J.S. Bach wrote partitas for harpsichord and as well as for numerous other instruments. Moving into the realm of professional musicians, the regular inclusion of an overture in a dance suite led to the orchestral suite becoming popular, with J.S. Bach renowned for his four orchestral suites and Telemann a particularly prolific composer of the form. A dance suite could also be incorporated in a larger work such an opera, of which Purcell’s Abdalazar is an example. As to actual dancing to a dance suite, this became popular at the court of court of Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King’, but was not a primary consideration for most composers. The dance suite was essentially a Baroque form and by 1750, it had given way in popularity to new musical forms such as the symphony and concerto. The dance suite didn’t make a return to favour until the 19th and 20th centuries, by which time it sounded completely different. Baroque Dance Suites, Thursday 7 April, 1:00pm

A Sophisticated Romantic Paul Cooke explores Peggy Glanville-Hicks’ long journey
Perhaps the restrictions, lockdowns and closed borders of the past couple of years can give us some inkling of what life was like for Australian musicians wanting to make their way in the world in the early-to-mid twentieth century. In the 1930s and 1940s, air travel was limited and sea travel was time-consuming. Neither would have been affordable, so it meant making one’s way in unfamiliar locations for long periods without the physical support of family at hand.
She also became involved in numerous activities to promote new music, such as the League of Composers Committee, and then became music critic of the New York Herald Tribune for ten years. She saw that the “only problem with being a music critic is that you spend an awful lot of time listening to other people’s music and not writing any of your own!”. Nevertheless, the security of the position and the support of those in her circle, such as Virgil Thomson, Paul Bowles and Colin McPhee, meant that this was the most fertile period of her composing career.
After studying composition with Fritz Hart in Melbourne (and assisting in the production of many of his operas), Peggy Glanville-Hicks headed overseas in 1932 and studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Ralph Vaughan Williams, who felt that she was one of only a few of his students who would go on to become major composers. Praise came, too, from her compatriot Esther Rofe, also studying at the RCM, who reminisced in 1988 that “Peggy’s songs were rather beautiful. They had a mystic quality, an ‘other’ quality. They were removed. They were a mood that came and passed by.” Further study followed, briefly with Egon Wellesz in Vienna and then in Paris with Nadia Boulanger.
She rejected serialism and turned to melody and rhythm, rather than harmony, as the cornerstones of her music: “Music should be horizontal because it takes place in time. It’s a sequence of one thing following another, not one crash after another of vertical dissonance.” In this she was much influenced by Indian and Far Eastern music, something that may have been given its initial impetus by a stopover in Bombay (now Mumbai), when she met with veena virtuoso Narayana Menon. Her 1954 opera The Transposed Heads incorporates Hindu folk music sources into a contemporary classical framework.
World War II saw her return to Australia in 1940 but opportunities were not forthcoming, and the following year she moved to the United States, where she lived until 1959. She was unable to devote herself solely to composition, initially having to survive on music copying and odd jobs and handouts from the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and, occasionally, her family (she set out from New York in June 1952 to go to Melbourne to visit her now-ailing parents, but her mother had died a couple of weeks before she arrived).
By the time she came to write her final opera, Sappho, completed in 1963, she had moved to Athens, seeking to concentrate on composing and making a study of traditional Greek music. A brain tumour brought an end to her composing career a few years later and she ultimately returned to Australia, where she inspired a new generation of composers. Joseph Machlis, writing in 1961, suggested that she had “found her way to a sophisticated romanticism that is akin, in its clarity and simplicity, to the tradition of Satie”. There is a hardwon stillness and serenity at the heart of many of her compositions.

First Person Western Sydney Orchestra Catherine Peake speaks with Artistic Director Kristian Winther and Chair Max Holzner from the newly formed Western Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra, or the West Phil.
It has been exciting news to hear that Western Sydney will now have its own orchestra, with the new Western Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra launched on 21 February. How did it all come about and what will be its significance for the people of Western Sydney?
As co-founders of the West Phil, can you tell us something about yourselves?
K: I might let Max answer this one.
K: I’m a violinist and conductor with eclectic experience as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and leader. I’ve worked a lot with various youth music programs and orchestras.
M: Kristian and I obviously have somewhat different points of abstraction or entry on this. Speaking for myself, I began teaching in Parramatta in 2011. It wasn’t long before I started looking for opportunities for my students outside the studio. The combination of prohibitive fees and the tyranny of distance from Western Sydney meant that there weren’t many high-quality options comparable to those enjoyed by students outside Western Sydney and to the sorts of opportunities Kristian and I had benefited from growing up. This greatly dismayed me!
M: Looking back over the years of my engagement with music, I am struck by how restless I was. There is probably something quintessentially middle-European (which I would attribute to my late father) about my innate distrust or suspicion towards specialisation. Oftentimes, and for better or worse, this has set me at odds with the demands of music as profession, and it’s certainly been a force in propelling me from one facet of music to the next – whether performing, musicology, conducting, teaching, business, and now increasingly governance.
So for me, the genesis of West Phil lies in early attempts to create for quality my own students, accessible opportunities through collaboration with stakeholders and teachers in and around Parramatta. From the outset the view was to the community and broader engagement.
However, I’m more at peace with this tendency of mine these days and I see how a venture and organisation like West Phil can only ever be the product of not only such a personal journey, but also of the critical involvement of people with a huge array of different strengths and skill sets. Our Board is a fine exemplar of this. In fact, our patron, Kim Williams AM, embodies this in some senses: a remarkable background and journey, with music as the central thread. I am incredibly grateful for this.
Kristian’s involvement elevated everything. He’s one of the finest performers Australia’s ever produced, and he has an innate talent for teaching and engaging with students. Our work together served to show us both the stakes – the potential to help create and foster something sustainable and world-class, that truly belongs to the region, and of which the community can lay claim to and be proud.

West Phil You plan to focus on student musicians performing alongside professional musicians in the orchestra. Can you let us know how the music and education programs will work?
K: This year the orchestra will consist of young players performing and rehearsing alongside one or two professional musicians per section (ie viola, horn, clarinet etc). We’ll be holding intensive three-to-five-day projects of full day rehearsals culminating in a public performance on the final day. What can we expect in the first year of the West Phil, and what are the long-term plans?
Do you have anything else you’d like to add?
K: We’re really excited to be a part of the constellation of great youth music groups in Australia. When one considers the sheer number of highly talented young players in Sydney and Western Sydney, there is unquestionably the need for more capable youth orchestra initiatives in the region, and we’re proud to be filling the breach! The overwhelming response we’ve had from parents and students and teachers in the region certainly would suggest that this is something to be very excited about. M: As fortunate as Kristian and I are to have the support of such a capable and passionate Board and Patron, it is worth mentioning that West Phil’s mission is made inestimably easier by the enormous groundswell of support we are receiving. As much as the pandemic threw a two-year spanner into planning, coming out the other end we have been bowled over by the huge amount of goodwill and enthusiasm of prospective students, parents, teachers, leaders, and businesses in the region. We are deeply grateful and it is a continual source of inspiration to the both of us in our work going forward.
M: Kristian? K: The music we perform this year will be from composers including Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Shostakovich and Mahler. Alongside the youth-focussed group, long term we’re aiming to establish a professional orchestra which will act as a potential employment base for ‘graduates’ of the orchestra, which will also feature some younger musicians who are simultaneously in the youth philharmonic.

Jean-Phillipe Rameau Father of French Baroque By Michael Morton-Evans
Dubbed by Voltaire ‘our hero of the semiquavers’, JeanPhilippe Rameau amazed and enchanted 18th century French audiences. He was one of the truly multifaceted musicians of his day, acclaimed for his innovative and popular operas. But he was also known as one of the greatest organists in France and his theoretical writings about music continue to influence musical thinkers to this day, some three centuries later. The intention was that Rameau should become a lawyer, but he showed such outstanding musical ability at a very early age that his father allowed him to take lessons on the organ, violin, and harpsichord. But then sex reared its head, a love affair with a local girl went wrong and the young Rameau had to go into temporary exile in Italy to hide from her enraged family. It didn’t do him any harm however. He took the opportunity to become acquainted with Italian music of the period, which would stand him in good stead with his own operas yet to come. Despite all this early talent, Rameau was a late starter when it came to composition. He was 39 before he started composing the works for which he is best known. Luckily, he managed to avoid William Walton’s advice many years later that all sensitive composers should die at the age of 37, to escape the critical damnation of failing to live up to their early promise! In fact, had he done so he wouldn’t have composed nine tenths of his music or his theoretical writings. Nor would he have become perhaps the most important figure in French musical history. His first was the Treaty on Harmony, published in 1722. This extraordinary tome set out theories of chord formation and a lot more besides. It has formed the basis of harmony teaching ever since. Rameau moved to Paris to supervise the printing of the work and he remained there for the rest of his life.
He was a formal man with a frosty manner. He lived frugally, though he was known to love money and, in his lifetime, earned a large fortune. He had a reputation for arrogance and sarcasm, and his manner could be best described as obstreperous. It is said that on his deathbed he reproved the priest for intoning his prayers out of tune! In 1745, at the age of 58, he was appointed composer of the King’s chamber music, but he was allowed to go on writing his own operas and this was the time when the world was gifted the likes of Platée and the Princess of Navarre. Platée is an interesting case history. It prompted one man to ask whether Rameau was either a brave musician or a fool. The work might easily have been interpreted as a mockery of its dedicatees and the undoing of his career. It was composed for the wedding celebration of the French Dauphin and the Infanta of Spain, Maria Theresa, in 1745. Maria Theresa was almost universally recognised as pretty ugly. The principal character Platée, who happens to be the bride in a mock wedding, is a vain, unattractive marsh-nymph. Luckily for him, nobody seemed to notice the similarity. It could just as easily have been an ‘off with his head’ moment in history. Rameau was well protected by the Court, which was just as well because in 1752 there broke out in Paris what has become known as La guerre des bouffons (the war of the comedians) .The Italian composer Pergolesi had brought his opera La serva padrona to Paris and a war broke out between the partisans of French and Italian music. Rameau was the chosen leader of the pro-French party and was to make many enemies during this time, though in the end he admitted the virtues of Italian opera, even going as far as to say that were he 20 years younger he would go to Italy and take Pergolesi as his model. Not everyone at that time realised that he had spent some time in Italy in his youth and picked up his knowledge of Italian opera there.
14
The pre-eminent French music critic of the early 20th century, Alexis Roland Manuel, had this to say of Rameau: “As strict a scientist as any, he also lived the dream life of the poet. He was completely a man of his period, with a desire to systematise everything and leave nothing to chance where his music was concerned. He always went carefully and thoroughly through his compositions and invented that genuinely French expression ‘to use art to conceal art’. A fellow critic of Manuel’s time, George Jean-Aubry thought that Rameau embodied the most astonishing balance of science, will-power, and imagination. He wrote: “It may be that Rameau is crabbed and savage because his problems force him into solitude, but how much the more thoroughly does the most vivid feeling pierce through in a thousand places.”
King Louis XV had two deaths to mourn in 1764. First his beloved mistress and adviser Madame de Pompadour died of tuberculosis at the age of 42, and not long afterward his favourite composer caught typhoid fever and died just short of his 81st birthday. It must be said that Rameau’s music pretty well died with him outside France, until the mid-20th century when brave impresarios began to reconsider his operas and ballets. Prejudice played a big part here. For two centuries AngloSaxon historians from Charles Burney onwards have shown a distinct lack of sympathy. As recently as 1928 one critic wrote that Rameau’s music was unenterprising, stiff, archaic, and lacking in spontaneity and charm. Happily, we are learning better these days. High Five – The Precious Energy of Barney McAll Barry O’Sullivan talks to Barney McAll about his music, Mooroolbark, and his time in the Big Apple. Australian jazz pianist and composer Barney McAll moved to New York City in 1997 to join legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz’s band, after completing a Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne; contemporaries included pianists Paul Grabowsky, Tony Gould and Mike Nock. Further studies followed in New York with Barry Harris and Mulgrew Miller, as well as in Cuba with Chucho Valdes and Ramón Valle. Awarded the Australia Council Fellowship in 2007, he was the recipient of the Peggy Glanville-Hicks composer residency in Sydney in 2015, and the same year won Best Jazz Album for his album Mooroolbark at the ARIA Music Awards. How extensively was music a part of your life growing up in those early years in Mooroolbark, Melbourne, and whose influences did you absorb there? Maybe I intuitively felt music was my ticket to the future while I was growing up in Mooroolbark, but I didn’t know that at the time. I was just immersing myself in Black American music and learning it by listening and absorbing it. Later when I moved to New York, I started getting hired by the people who were heavily involved in the real lineage of Black music – that was surreal to me. Len Barnard, who is the brother of Bob Barnard, lived close to my family home and dropped several fantastic albums over to my brother John, who is also a pianist. I took a deep dive into Pinetop Smith, Mary Lou Williams, Bud Powell and Miles Davis. I can still sing many of the heads and solos on those records note for note. Maybe I learned to swing by listening to these albums, or maybe some genetic Celtic funk exists? But it was always a quest to learn about this music I loved so much and I’m still on that quest. Mooroolbark was somehow a cul de sac of jazz, soul, and blues… in the eastern suburbs. Who knew? Exit was your first recording as a leader. How did it eventuate? Exit came about after I had first visited New York. While in New York, I vowed to always document where I was at musically and I continue to do this in my life. As a result of just being in that incredible city, I started writing music as a way to express all the feelings I had. These songs I then recorded, and they became part of Exit, but I didn’t have the full album. I was back visiting Australia and Vincent Herring and Jimmy Cobb were in town. Martin Jackson asked them if they would record some songs with me. What an honour to record with Jimmy Cobb and Vincent Herring, and strangely all the
songs fit together. This is the second part of Exit. The last part is when I went into the ABC studios in Sydney. I then had a full album that looked at my life and musical vision at that time. Musical life is full of challenges. What are those that may have confronted you, and how have you overcome them? Firstly, I have been confronted by learning the instrument and learning to sing with it. This has been thirty years of exploration and I feel I am finally getting to a place where I can connect with the music I hear, in the present moment, much more authentically than before. It’s still an enigma, but I am at least able to express myself through my instrument. In a way that helps me. I recently came across the term “audiation” and it means, in some ways, the ability to think in sound, to connect with what you hear and translate it as directly as possible through your instrument. Money is another one. I have done okay considering the obstacles but the striving and sheer survival has taught me a lot of music. The struggle became music. Many of my compositions are catharsis of a kind of sonic documentation of something I’m going through. The streaming services, the internet in general, and now the Covid crisis have really decimated many musicians’ livelihoods and so a lot of musicians are changing occupations. I tell all my students to pay no attention to streaming rates. Avoid the noise of the internet and make sure your music is the very best it can be in your internal estimation or, if not, in the estimation of someone you can trust. Anything else kills the chrysalis.

What are your current musical projects? I have just released my new album called Precious Energy, which features Gary Bartz, The Hiatus Kaiyote Rhythm Section, Laneous, and Rita Satch. I have another new album coming out later this year called A Corona of Thorns which will be released as a music NFT album. I also have some fantastic remixes of the Precious Energy album coming together and lastly, I have another trio project that I am working on, which is a secret but very exciting.
I recently came across the term “audiation” and it means, in some ways, the ability to think in sound, to connect with what you hear and translate it as directly as possible through your instrument.

What are some beneficial aspects, that are not currently present in the Australian music scene, that could be introduced to enhance it? More grants and more support for our decimated industry, more arts funding, more support for individual musicians and more priority for Australian music to be used in the media; in films, and anywhere else. It feels like music is the most crucial and most under-supported thing to me. Music is perceived as free, just stream it. It’s not, it’s blood sweat, and tears. There are some very greedy, short-sighted, and exploitative entrepreneurs and politicians who should be keelhauled for what they have done to music, and they will be, spiritually. Barney McAll’s Non-Compliance Trio will appear at Phoenix Park Central on Sunday 3 April https://phoenixcentralpark.com.au https://barneymcall.com/

Volunteer Spotlight Deborah Evans Pamela Newling speaks with Deborah Evans, Jazz programmer and presenter From a musical family, Deborah Evans has been surrounded by music all her life. She started volunteering with 2MBS in 2008, because she loved the jazz. She originally presented both Jazz and Classical programs, but she says: “At my core I’m a jazz person. I think it’s the improvisation, intimacy and surprise combined with the versatility of the musicians.” Following a 10-year hiatus, when Deborah bought a small farm in rural NSW, she returned to Sydney and also resumed her involvement with Fine Music. Jazz After Hours was the time slot that was available on her return. She comments: “There is an intimacy to late night radio that I have come to love. Jazz After Hours is my ‘special place’ where I get to have a conversation with my listeners and share my music.” Having been involved with other radio stations, Deborah describes 2MBS facilities as second to none. She also comments on the dedication of volunteers, and pays tribute to Volunteer Coordinator, Sue Nicholas, who she says “is extraordinary and keeps us all on the same page”. She goes on to say that she loves being part of the JazzCrew and contributing via the Jazz Committee. “I think the whole package is inspiring – people, music, community.” Deborah’s musical tastes encompass Jazz, Classical, Blues, 70s Rock, Latin and Bluegrass. Classical Composers – Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Dvorak and Khachaturian, to name a few – are favourites. She says that “with Jazz it is about the performers – Joe Chindamo, Keith Jarrett, James Morrison, Paul Grabowsky, Mike Nock, Ingrid James, Oscar Peterson, Vince Jones, and new discoveries, like Amanda Suwondo, are exciting”. Memorable performances that Deborah mentions are: “The first time I heard Vince Jones performing at a pub in Melbourne in the early 80s, and anything by the ACO. The last couple of years have been tough on musicians, but they’ve also been tough for people like me who thrive on being in the audience.”

Ever on the go… away from 2MBS Deborah finds time to: “Go to gigs, swim, sail and spend time with my four grandchildren. I love cooking and do great dinner parties. On the creative side I make silver jewellery and am just getting into pottery. I have always travelled a lot, both domestically and internationally for both work and pleasure. I’m looking forward to being a tourist again.” From late June, Deborah will be also be presenting a new FineJazz program on Tuesdays. It will be called Jazz About Town and will feature the music of established jazz musicians playing at live gigs in the coming week. It will be like a ‘sound’ version of a gig guide. There will be more details closer to the launch. Jazz After Hours, Sundays 10.00pm

Fine Jazz Happenings Keith Pettigrew talks about International Jazz Day, 30 April
In November 2011, UNESCO officially designated 30 April as International Jazz Day to highlight the role of jazz in uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by UNESCO Director General, and the legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock.
International Jazz Day 2022 at 2MBS FineMusic Sydney
International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact. It raises awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication.
This year’s celebration is on Saturday 30 April, and again we will stream a week-in-a-day of FineJazz, with specials in each program celebrating the Day. Our programs cover the wide sweep that is jazz: from Classic Jazz of the 20s and 30s; Swing jazz of the prewar era; post-war crooners and the great American Songbook; the emergence of Bebop and west coast cool; modern world jazz from Europe and the Middle East; emerging new jazz standards as jazz interprets pop music; local musicians and interviews; right up to the jazz that is emerging from our jazz campuses.
Last year, FineJazz at 2MBS FineMusic Sydney participated in this global event with a streamed broadcast of the week’s FineJazz programs back-to-back.
Each year on 30 April, this international art form is recognised for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; fostering gender equality; and promoting freedom of expression.
We will also be interspersing our FineJazz programs with excerpts from a History of Australian Jazz, a subject that deserves special listening, from the larrikins to the greats. The details will appear on our International Jazz Day webpage, 2MBSFineMusicSydney.com/JazzDay/. Until then, check out the video of the 2021 International Jazz Day Virtual Global Concert.
International Jazz Day in 2019 focussed on Melbourne, with special events happening at the Sydney Opera House. Despite COVID, 2020 and 2021 saw over 190 countries participating in the worldwide celebration, with a spectacular All-Star Global Concert webcast for the first time featuring artists performing from cities across the globe.
A Week-In-A-Day. Too much FineJazz is not enough. 2MBS FineMusic Sydney. Jazz CD Reviews We are gathering our FineJazz resources into one hot spot on the 2MBS FineMusic Sydney website. So loose, but so tight: Virginia Ginnane reviews the charms of the Zela Margossian Quintet
Downstairs at Mary’s Underground (formerly The Basement), and a walk from Sydney’s Circular Quay past pubs pumping with life at last, red lights glow on a stage that’s hosted some of the world’s great stars of jazz. Welcome to SIMA’s Jazz:Now Summer Festival. As the Zela Margossian Quintet takes that hallowed stage in late February, the audience, starved of fine live music is primed for release. Thanks to the Quintet, the release was glorious.
It was not an easy birth during the ‘Covid hurdles’ as Zela described them with the constant canning of plans. But The Road, recorded in two bursts at the end of 2020 and in June 2021 is finally here. “I call it the Covid album,” laughs Zela.
And the feeling was mutual. “It was amazing! I was so happy to put the music out there after waiting so long,” said Zela, the quintet leader speaking to 2MBS FineMusic Sydney about the first live gig for the band since last June and the first time they’d played together in six months. “The spark that we get on stage is remarkable, I love that!” she said of the Quintet that was first formed in 2017. The Road ahead It was a night of a gorgeous fusion of cool jazz and Middle Eastern folk harmonies from this gifted Beirutborn Armenian composer who has made Australia her home. “It’s my passion to fuse these harmonies together and apply them in my melodies.” Zela’s haunting piano melody opens the set with Refuge, richly interwoven with the entrancing and exotic threads and charms of Stuart Vandegraaff’s sax and Alexander Inman-Hislop’s drums, Jacques Emery’s Double Base and Adem Yilmaz on percussion. All so loose, but so tight and played with such shared respect and delicate restraint. “They just love playing together,” laughed my companion. Their performance marks the launch, much longed-for by the Quintet and their fans, of the band’s second album, The Road on the US label Ropeadope, following their Aria-nominated debut album Transitions, in 2019.
And with this album comes a stronger sense of purpose for her. “This time I was more grounded and knew what direction I was heading towards,” Zela explains. “Whereas with the first album I didn’t have any expectations and I just put out my feelings to express myself.” Freedom of jazz It was the expression of those feelings that switched her to jazz from the tight mould of classical piano she studied in her Masters degree at Armenia’s Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. “With the freedom of expression in jazz, you can take any tune and you can make it your own, and that’s what I missed in my classical years.” Now there are no rules. “I just want my music to touch people,” she says. “I write very organically, if it feels right I try it with the band – and the band members are fantastic human beings and musicians! And I owe them a lot for bringing the sound out as I would imagine it in my head.” Featuring eight tracks, the title track The Road represents for Zela “the journey we take in life and all the experiences and acquaintances we get along the way”. Adding too that, “it’s true for my band members and myself that we are discovering each other every time we perform and go on tours, it’s really lovely”. Her deep emotional drive to offer ‘a feeling of comfort and hope’ in both her composition and the Quintet’s performance is further reflected in titles such as Gratitude and others. Gratitude for the small things like running water 24/7 that she didn’t have as a child growing up in Beirut. And security. Ceasefire from her first album played in tribute to the suffering in Ukraine draws on Zela’s own experience of sheltering in basements in Beirut from enemy fire.
22
The final track on The Road, the ravishingly joyous harmony On Ya, is an Aussie salute. This tiny track makes the album a little shy of 47 minutes, short enough for the US record label to press a 12-inch vinyl in the future. To ZMQ, good on ya!

CD REVIEWS Isolation Emancipation Mace Francis Plus 11 Independent
This new album with its bold brass section was conceived by Mace Francis in his COVID19 safety bubble of Perth W.A. It was there he had the space and time to get creative arranging ten upbeat tunes for a twelve-piece band reminiscent of the recordings of the Marty Paich + 11 album from 1960 which featured the legendary Art Pepper on saxophone. Mace Francis employs a hint of Nelson Riddle, a tilt to Count Basie, definitively some Duke Ellington, a splash of “cool school” Gerry Mulligan, a little of Thad Jones, and a hint of Charles Mingus. But, mostly it’s just Mace’s music to make you happy. Five of the charts are purely instrumental, the remaining five are with vocals strongly supplied by Lucy Iffla on the tracks, Casserole For Two, Squint Your Eyes, Home On the Range, I’m In The Mood For Love, and less successfully on
In My Solitude, where she doesn’t quite gain command when battling the band. But overall it’s a fun outing with some superb solos from Gemma Farrell on alto saxophone, Jayden Blockley on the soprano, and Tahlia Denn’s French Horn. Harry Mitchell’s pianism is superb throughout and Bronton Ainsworth’s drumming technique is perfect for the big band sound required. Mace Francis also provides some trombone, this being the first time he has played on his own recorded music – his tenth album release. While not always strictly in the Marty Paich mode, but never the less successful in its own right, the album is a coherent and engaging one that stands up well to repeated listening revealing a little more each time.
“The qualities of the violoncello are exactly those of the beloved dreamer whom we know as Schumann.” So wrote the musicologist Donald Tovey. How appropriate then that for their most recent duo venture, having previously essayed Mendelssohn and Beethoven to acclaim, Zoe Knighton and Amir Farid have recorded works by Robert and Clara Schumann. Robert played the cello in his youth and his writing in both chamber and orchestral settings reflects his familiarity with the instrument’s qualities. One of his works here, Pieces in Folk Style, was written specifically for the cello; the other, Fantasy Pieces, was written
originally for clarinet. Both were intended to be played by gifted amateurs at home, but that doesn’t mean that they are lacking in imagination in their conception or expression in their performance. Clara’s contributions, mostly intended as gifts to Robert, were all originally settings of poems for voice and piano. Knighton’s playing ranges from quiet and unadorned to spirited and joyful, Farid’s is understated and sympathetic. The CD booklet helpfully provides the texts of the songs, thus providing a context for the music. Recommended.

Smaller Worlds Casey Golden Bandcamp
This new album is a collection of simple, original melodies for solo jazz piano. It may not be jazz to you, but that depends on your ears and sensibilities. You may commune with the spirits of Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, or even Chick Corea. Whether these greats were looking for harmonies, ideas, precursors, anticipations, or even validation, they turned to Stravinsky and Mozart. Bach famously was an improviser, the idiom of the day. Golden’s musical roots emulsify with classical music. He has a solid performance and recording history in improvisation and belongs to a family thoroughly steeped in the jazz tradition, The Barnards. His newest recording, Smaller Worlds, contains elements from both musical spheres. The album has songs written at various times over the past ten years by Golden. While
most of it was not composed for solo piano, throughout the first year of the pandemic and the ensuing isolation, Golden found all these chosen songs evolved to work best for him as solo pieces. There are delicate musical moments of contemplation on Recluse. There are playfully brief music interludes, Antique (Interlude) and Counter-Earth (Interlude), on a tack laced piano with a harpsichord effect. There’s also Golden’s superb pianism on Unmentionable, but what stands out primarily is placing honesty, passion, originality, and personal experience at the centre of his art. – Barry O’Sullivan
Haydn Piano Sonatas, Volume 10 Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, piano Chandos CHAN 20191
Volume 10 of Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s cycle of sonatas by Joseph Haydn brings to audiences the inventiveness and variety of the composer’s keyboard works. On this disc, and in other volumes, Bavouzet brings together sonatas from across Haydn’s lifetime that share an ethos or character. The sound is delightfully clear and crisp with the articulation of every note sounding true and precise. This precision brings Haydn’s originality to the fore, especially in works of such unusual form and character as the Sonata no 45 in A major, a piece in which each movement seems
25
to grow out of the previous one: the stunning finale, a theme and variations on a minuet, amazes in its capacity to evade the listener’s expectations. The climax of the disc is the Sonata no 60 in C major, the only one of Haydn’s keyboard works to reach beyond the range of the Viennese keyboards of the day. Composed in London it was dedicated to Clementi’s student Thérèse Jansen. I greatly enjoyed this recording and highly recommend it. — James Nightingale

He loves her sister Fenena, whom he saves from death ordered by the high priest Zaccaria. Abigaille discovers she is not
Nabucco's daughter, but of slave birth. She plots against Fenena who has converted to the Hebrew faith and been appointed regent. Nabucco is reported killed and Abigaille demands the crown but Nabucco is alive and proclaims himself both king and god. He is struck down by a thunderbolt and goes mad. Abigaille seizes the throne, tricks Nabucco into signing the death warrant of Fenena and the Hebrews, then has him imprisoned. Nabucco prays to the God of the Hebrews for forgiveness, is restored to sanity, stops the execution and frees the Hebrews. Abigaille repents and takes poison. After many years of marriage, the passion has faded for Gilfen and Luise. Gilfen has postponed his departure for a journey a number of times because he fears that his wife will be unfaithful. So, he has never departed. Trott, a friend of the couple, is in love with Luise. He finally persuades Gilfen to undertake the long-planned journey. Gilfen (who has guessed Trott's motives) takes leave of his wife and fakes his departure. Trott immediately seizes the opportunity but Luise rejects him. Gilfen returns to find (much to his surprise and delight) that his wife has been faithful to him. Now it is Trott's turn to depart and Gilfen and Luise decide to renew their love. Heuberger, R. Ammon swears he will lead an army to save her but

Gala GL 100.734 1:52 Balkis, Queen of Sheba, betrothed to Solomon, arrives at his court in Jerusalem and is impressed by its magnificence. She asks to meet the builder and is introduced to Adoniram, the master builder now in charge of the construction of Solomon¹s temple. At a later meeting, they fall in love and Balkis asks the King to delay the signing of their wedding agreement, leading him to wonder about her commitment. Balkis and Adoniram plan to leave Jerusalem together but, while Adironam waits at their meeting place, he is mortally wounded by three disaffected workers, Amrou, Phanor and Méthousaël. Balkis arrives to find the dying Adoniram. They embrace; he dies and Balkis mourns over his body.

14:30 SATURDAY MATINÉE Operetta in the afternoon Prepared by Angela Cockburn Sullivan, A. Ruddygore. Operetta in two acts. Libretto by W.S. Gilbert. First performed London, 1887. DAME HANNAH: Joan Davies, cont SIR RODERICK MURGATROYD: Thomas Lawlor, bass ROSE MAYBUD: Marilyn Hill Smith, sop SIR RUTHVEN MURGATROYD: Gordon Sandison, bar RICHARD DAUNTLESS: David Hillman, ten MAD MARGARET: Linda Ormiston, mezz SIR DESPARD MURGATROYD: Harold Innocent, bass New Sadler’s Wells Opera Ch & O/Simon Phipps. MCA Classics MCAD2 11010 1:29 Years before, Dame Hannah had discovered that her betrothed, Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, was one of the ‘bad baronets’ of Ruddygore. Centuries before, a witch being burnt at the stake, cursed all future baronets of Ruddygore. They were to commit a crime every day or perish in agony. Robin Oakapple is too shy to declare his love for Dame Hannah’s niece, Rose. Robin is actually Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd who fled his home 20 years previously to avoid inheriting the baronetcy and its curse. Richard Dauntless, Robin's foster-brother, arrives after ten years at sea. He offers to speak to Rose on Robin’s behalf but falls in love with her and proposes immediately. Rose accepts but Robin points out Richard’s many flaws so she breaks the engagement and accepts Robin. Mad Margaret has been driven to madness by her love for the current baronet Sir Despard Murgatroyd. Richard discloses that Despard's elder brother Ruthven is alive and the elated Despard transfers the baronetcy to Ruthven. Rose, horrified at Robin's true identity, breaks off the engagement and accepts Richard. Despard takes up with his old love Mad Margaret. Robin (now Sir Ruthven) leaves for Ruddygore Castle and tries unsuccessfully to be a bad baronet. Robin's weak crimes stir his ancestral ghosts from their usual haunt in the castle's portrait gallery. The curse requires them to ensure that their successors are duly committing a crime every day and to torture them to death if they fail. They are not pleased to learn that the baronet's crimes range from filing a false income tax return to forging his own will. Robin's uncle, the late Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, orders him to ‘carry off a lady’ that day or perish in horrible agony. Robin tells his servant Adam to go to the village and abduct any lady! Adam unfortunately chooses to abduct Dame Hannah who proves formidable
and Robin cries out for his uncle's protection. Sir Roderic appears and recognises his former love. They enjoy a brief reunion interrupted by Robin saying that under the terms of the curse, a Baronet of Ruddygore can die only by refusing to commit a daily crime. Refusing is therefore ‘tantamount to suicide’ but suicide is a crime. Thus, he reasons, his predecessors ought never to have died at all. Roderic follows this logic and agrees, stating that he is practically alive. Robin is now free of the curse and Rose happily resumes her engagement to him while Roderic and Dame Hannah embrace. The ghosts’ high noon, from Ruddygore (1887). Tasmanian SO/Andrew Greene. ABC 476 5104
