Jenufa is pregnant, but her foster mother, the Kostelnicka (leader of the village), forbids her to marry her son Steva, Jenufa’s feckless sweetheart, until he stays sober for a year. Laca, Steva’s half brother, is hopelessly in love with Jenufa. The Kostelnicka pretends that Jenufa has gone to Vienna but, in fact, she has her baby in secret. Steva refuses to acknowledge the child and the Kostelnicka, fearing its existence will prevent Jenufa from marrying Laca, drowns the baby in the icy river while Jenufa is asleep. She tells Jenufa that she has been in a fever and the baby has died. The body is found as Jenufa and Laca are about to be married. The villagers turn on Jenufa but the Kostelnicka confesses to the crime. Jenufa forgives her foster mother and offers Laca his freedom, but he stays with her and they prepare to face the future together.

While walking home from a fancy-dress ball, Eisenstein leaves his friend, Dr Falke, sleeping
on a bench so that, when he wakes in the morning, he has to walk home dressed in the costume of a bat (Fledermaus) to the great amusement of passers-by. Two years later, Falke exacts his revenge. Eisenstein is about to go to prison to serve a short sentence for insulting behaviour. Falke persuades him to go first to a party being given by Prince Orlofsky. Falke then suggests to Rosalinde, Eisenstein's wife, that she go to the party disguised as a Hungarian countess so that she may see what her husband is doing instead of going to prison. At the party Eisenstein flirts with the mysterious 'Countess'. An involvement between Rosalinde's maid, Adele, and the prison governor, Colonel Frank, is also manipulated by Falke. After Eisenstein leaves, Alfred invites himself to supper in Rosalinde's room but she is saved when he is taken off to prison in place of Eisenstein. In the morning, all of the guests are summoned to the governor's office and the misunderstandings caused by Falke's plot are resolved happily. Tales from the Vienna Woods, op 325 (1868); Wine, women and song, op 333 (1869). New York Vocal Arts Ensemble/Raymond Beegle.

Ginevra, daughter of the King of Scotland, is betrothed to Ariodante. Polinesso, a jealous rival of Ariodante, wins the confidence of Ginevra's maid Dalinda and, with her help, makes Ariodante believe he is Ginevra’s lover. The King disowns Ginevra for her alleged infidelity, and they hear Ariodante has killed himself. Polinesso then arranges to kill Dalinda, the only witness to his plot. But Ariodante (whose suicide attempt was foiled), meets Dalinda in the woods and defeats the would-be assassins. Polinesso, seeking the King’s favour, defends Ginevra’s honour in a tournament, but is mortally wounded. Ariodante, having learned about Polinesso’s plot from Dalinda, appears and offers to be Ginevra’s champion. The dying Polinesso confesses and Ginevra is pardoned by the King.

200th ANNIVERSARY
Weber, C.M. Euryanthe. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Helmina von Chézy. First performed Vienna, 25 October 1823.
COUNT ADOLAR: Nicolai Gedda, ten EURYANTHE: Jessye Norman, sop
COUNT LYSIART: Tom Krause, bar
EGLANTINE: Rita Hunter, mezz
KING LUDWIG VI: Siegfried Vogel, bass Leipzig Radio Choir; Staatskapelle Dresden/ Marek Janowski.
EMI 7 63509 2 2:54
The noble Count Adolar is engaged to the virtuous Euryanthe, who has already rejected Count Lysiart. Out of jealousy, Lysiart now intends to destroy the couple’s happiness. He taunts Adolar by saying he doubts such virtuous women exist and provokes him into accepting a wager testing Euryanthe’s fidelity. However, Lysiart fails in his attempt to seduce Euryanthe and so forms an alliance with the equally jealous Eglantine who is in love with Adolar. Eglantine succeeds in drawing an embarrassing family secret from Euryanthe that she had been made to swear never to reveal. Adolar’s lovesick sister Emma committed suicide with poison from a ring and now her ghost restlessly roams the grounds. This ring, taken from Emma’s tomb, causes Adolar to believe that Euryanthe had given it to Lysiart, along with his secret.
In the presence of the unsuspecting Euryanthe, the wager is ended before the
entire court. Adolar loses his lands, his fortune and his bride. He publicly disowns Euryanthe who is speechless with horror and bewilderment. Her inability to defend herself is taken as proof of her guilt and Adolar banishes her to the wilderness. She is discovered there by the king’s hunting party. Regaining her power of speech, she reveals the full extent of Eglantine’s betrayal.
Eglantine and Lysiart are about to marry, when the king returns to court with news that Euryanthe has died of grief. Eglantine loses her mind and triumphantly reveals all. Lysiart kills her and is arrested. The remorseful Adolar is overjoyed when Euryanthe appears. She forgives him the idiotic wager and his false accusations. The lovers are reunited, and Emma’s soul also finds peace, as the innocent Euryanthe had wept over the ring.
