ust south of Syracuse and easily accessible from I-81, Lafayette boasts several historic claims. Before being named after American Revolutionary War and French national hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, the site was the seat of the central government of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy and the scene of notable Native American gatherings, ceremonies and traditions. Today Lafayette can boast its location at the crossings of two of the longest highways in the United States – Route 20 and Route 11 – spanning all the way from Canada to Florida and from the East coast to the West.

Lafayette has always been known as a richly forested agricultural area with excellent apple orchards. The long-standing Lafayette Apple Festival (October 9 & 10, 2021) is one of Central New York’s favorite events.
Rides, free entertainment, an outstanding arts and crafts show, mouth-watering apple fritters and home-baked apple pie, plus some of the most original scarecrows you will ever see at the Scarecrow Contest bring back the crowds every year. For COVID updates, check the website lafayetteapplefest.org.
