riginally known as Sullivan, after General Sullivan, commander of a historic expedition in the summer and fall of 1779, the name was changed to Phelps after the town was organized in 1796. It developed into a prosperous milling town and is famous as one of the world’s major producers of sauerkraut. A walk in the village down Main Street today takes you past charming homes and thriving businesses. Take a look at the unique architecture and enjoy the view and sound of Flint Creek Falls on Main Street.

Phelps Annual Sauerkraut Weekend

The festival is a village-wide four-day event, which includes the Mustang Rally of the Finger Lakes at the Phelps Community Center, Arts in the Park in Methodist Memorial Park on Main Street, Public Market Place in the downtown area, events at the American Legion and, of course, carnival rides and community booths

Howe House Museum (& the 2-story privy) 66 Main St., Phelps 315-548-4940; phelpsnyhistory.com The Phelps Community Historical Society maintains permanent and rotating exhibits, including “The Country Lawyer’s Office,” in the historic, brick Howe House on Main Street. Built in 1869, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and features a two-story, six-hole (three up, three down) privy thought to be the only house with such a structure. Call for summer hours and COVID protocols. • Redfield Park, located on Church Street, is a community park with a gazebo, concession building, a baseball field and playground where outdoor summer concerts are held. • Methodist Memorial Park on Main Street is a great spot for a picnic under its majestic trees. • Phelps Community Center also hosts a full playground & sports fields. • Crooked Bridge Park, Phelps newest park, is located on Williams Street. Here you can splash in the creek or picnic. All the village parks have bag containers to help you clean up after your dog.

Phelps Art Center

It is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The art center now hosts various forms of art (including visual and performance art) by artists from the Finger Lakes region. It also offers practical workshops, classes, vocal concerts, and exhibits. Visitors will find a gift shop where they can make purchases to support the local art scene.
