Successful Syston Christmas Event Wow Factor! New Lights on High Street

What a great day was had by all who attended the Christmas event on Saturday 3rd December 2016. After the event had to be cancelled in 2015, there were lots of nervous organisers in the time leading up to the day, with fingers crossed that the weather would not cause the same problem again! Thankfully, it didn’t and the crowds turned out to support this great event that starts Syston’s festive season.

The Stage provided a great focal point with entertainment throughout the afternoon. Santa’s grotto was well visited and the organisers would like to thank Nest estate agents for sponsoring this and providing bags to hold the gifts given by Santa. The Deputy Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Pauline Ranson, accompanied

by her husband, visited and presented the winners of the best dressed shop window competition. The Chairman of Syston Town Council, Cllr Paul Henry, presented her with a basket of flowers, see our picture below left. Families enjoyed all the activities, with many taking the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the Street entertainer, Superman. The day finished with a spectacular fireworks display which allowed time for the a lights to turn on across the town. The feedback via the Stn facebook page has been wonderful and thank you Continues on page 2

Continued from Front Page for all of your positive comments about the new lights, which hopefully, funding available, will be extended in 2017. The only disappointing aspect was the vandalism of the Christmas tree, which was decorated with items made by the schoolchildren of St Peter and St Paul’s Primary Academy. They had made two candy canes, which were ripped off the tree and burnt in Central park. The remaining items; picture frames with baubles, parcels and wreaths all survived persistent attempts to remove them. Unfortunately, the tree lights were not so lucky as on the last attempt were damaged beyond repair and will need replacing before this years event. Fortunately, these acts were caught on CCTV and the police were informed and are investigating. Now the work begins on the event for December 2017, so if you have some ideas or would like to be part of the event panel, then please contact Ursula Southern on 0116 260 7150. This is a community panel and we do need some new members.

Santa did Age Concern Syston proud by delivering their new minibus on Tuesday 20th December 2016 after a two-year wait, and wow, what a bus it is. Having applied to the government Community Bus scheme in December 2014 for one of the free community buses, we heard that we were successful, hooray! So now we have a ‘zooped up, slap bang wallop’ of a posh bus to give our community a real smooth ride. It's for all of our members and all the community groups that use our services. If you did not know, we do run four day care groups, two on Mondays and two on Fridays and we also run a respite care group once a month. We also book social trips out to pubs, garden centres, museums etc anywhere you want to go we will sort something out for you. There are also some community groups and clubs that have the use of our minibus so there is a lot of people benefiting from our new bus. So if you want to use our bus do get in touch with Age Concern Syston at the office in the Methodist church hall. Must-see at the cinema this month: Hacksaw Ridge Movie legend Mel Gibson is back after a decadelong break to tell the story of the young, brave Army Medic Desmond Doss. Hacksaw Ridge follows the true events of Andrew Garfield’s (SpiderMan) Doss who served during the Battle of Okinawa but refused to kill people. This led to Doss becoming the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honour without firing a shot. Garfield is on top form here with an astonishingly powerful and gritty performance. Gibson loves his raw and unforgiving violence with Ridge being no different. On a big screen, this will have you pinned for the duration. Hacksaw Ridge released 27th January 2017 – certificate 15 Must-have DVD this month: Bridget Jones’s Baby Renée Zellweger returns as the clumsy Brit 12 years after her last outing in The Edge of Reason. This time around, everything seems to be going marvellously with Bridget’s career on the up and single life not being a total disaster; until she falls pregnant with only 50% clarity on who the daddy is! The two potential fathers are English gent Colin Firth and American billionaire Patrick Dempsey

(Grey’s Anatomy). The trio’s great chemistry is the movie’s key. The comedic scenes are hilarious and the emotional sequences are touching. Sharon Maguire returns as the shot-caller after not directing the second instalment. As always, Renée is infectious as Bridget and the magnetism she possesses over the audience to continuously root for her is impressive. A fourth move in the saga looks a given. Out on DVD 30th January – certificate 15 In just under a week’s time I will be heading to the 67th Berlin Film Festival to catch a variety of movies. I’ll be covering what to look out for in 2017 cinema and providing mini-reviews in the next edition. Make and Play

Local children learned about the joy of giving, when Make and Play baby and toddler group produced two Christmas hampers to be donated to local community members nominated by the Syston Age Concern group. The children, pictured above, helping to pack the hampers, learned that a simple gift can help to lift the spirits of those who may be feeling lonely or having suffered a sadness, (such as a bereavement). The children of Make and Play were visited by a reindeer before he was due to fly off and help Santa! Children were extremely excited to be visited by the beautiful creature, and many enjoyed their photo’s to be taken with their new friend, who belongs to local children’s charity The Phoenix Children’s foundation. The group raffled two knitted reindeer hampers and raised a total of £115.60 to donate to the children’s charity which raises funds to provide disabled, special needs and terminally ill NEED HELP WITH CLEANING? Happy New Year everyone. Here at St Mary's our “It's Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas” was lots of fun. Santa came, there were very popular sleigh rides through the park, a candlelit woodland walk complete with Santa's elves and fairies giving out sweets, lots of stalls in the church with things to buy, refreshments, even the chippy van came. We had a fantastic raffle with over 50 prizes! Many, many thanks to the local businesses who supported us, the stall holders, helpers and to you for coming along. We made just over £2,500, with all profits going to St Mary's. The church was full for our Christmas Eve Carol Service when we 'raised the rafters' with our singing. Our next event is the annual Soup 'n Sweet Saturday 4th March between 12noon and 2.30pm in the Shoot Room, Stable Yard, Barkby Hall. Our church services are every Sunday at 6.00pm and the 1st and 3rd Sunday at 10.00am with an All Age lay-led service.

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. Some years ago I gave my daughter, Louise, two birch seedlings that I had grown from seed I had received from Sakhalin island, which is North of Japan and close to Russia in the sea of Okhotsk. One is now 15 feet (4.5m) tall and has a very upright habit; the other is 12 feet (3.6m) tall and has a broader crown. Over the years, as the trees have grown, I have removed the bottom branches to create a trunk that is now five feet (1.5m) tall. The trunks now have bark that is peeling to show the almost silvery-white bark beneath. I always prune birches between December and the end of January, or early February, if pruning is carried out as the sap starts to rise during late February the wounds will bleed sweet, sticky sap, which attracts wasps, flies and a fungus that turns the sap black.

mini standard. During Christmas this lovely evergreen Cotoneaster was so covered with orange berries that I had Vi take a photo of it with her camera so as to enable our readers to see how they can have a miniature standard tree that will grow in a very small garden, or even in a container containing John Innes number 3 compost. During the winter months, colour and fragrance is often lacking in many gardens, but there are a number of shrubs, perennials and even trees that will flower during the lower light levels of the winter months. During mid-January, one border at Syston station had two flowering cherry trees in flower and my favourite of these is Prunus subhirtella autumnalis, which will often open its white flowers on Christmas day. Always be careful when purchasing shrubs as many will eventually get large. I will start with four shrubs for the larger garden, although these can, if correctly pruned, be grown in large containers. Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ will eventually grow seven feet (2.1m) tall and forms an upright, deciduous shrub whose branches are wreathed with a mass of pink perfumed flowers from late November until the following March. Viburnum tinus ‘Liza Rosa’, pictured here, will also grow just as large, but I grow this superb evergreen shrub in a large container and at present it is During October 2015 I mentioned a half massed over standard Cotoneaster x suecicous ‘Coral with flat heads of Beauty’ that was growing in my daughter’s pink flower buds and pale pink flowers. front garden, see picture above.. Unlike the previous Viburnum, it does not A half standard has a 4 feet (1.2m) tall trunk, but as the plant in question only has have a strong perfume, but it will grow in half shade and still flower well. Mahonia x a 2.5 feet (75cm) trunk, I will say that I media ‘Charity’ will eventually grow tall made a mistake and that this is in fact a

with spine edged pinnate evergreen leaves and when its nine inch (22cm) tall spires of yellow, fragrant flowers appear between November and January it gives an exotic look to the border. Hamamelis are amongst my favourite winter flowering deciduous large shrubs and although I grow three different ones, my favourite is Hamamelis x media ‘Barmstedt Gold’, pictured above, whose bright yellow subtly scented flowers open during late December and last until late February. I always prune this after flowering to keep it in shape. I will mention Chimonanthes praecox, which if left to its own devises will form a large ungainly shrub, but my friend Josie Hutchinson has trained this out on a frame against the South facing wall of her bungalow where it produces it’s fragrant yellow-purple centred flowers from November until January. Sarcoccoca hookeriana ‘Purple Stem’ is the most fragrant of all the smaller evergreen shrubs in my garden. As its name suggests it has purple young branches and the whole shrub is a mass of small white flowers you can smell some yards away. This will grow in most soils, mine grows beneath trees facing North. Daphne odora ‘Walburton’ is also a low growing evergreen with large yellow variegated leaves. This prefers an open position where it will produce heads of fragrant pink flowers from November until January. It loves a good friable loam, but hates wet feet. I must finish with heathers, which in recent years seem to have gone out of fashion, but during the winter months you must go to Syston cemetery just to see to two long raised beds where you will see Erica x darleyensis ‘Silberschmelze’ producing a white carpet, which on a sunny day give off a sweet fragrance. This Erica, unlike many types of heather will grow in most garden soils that do not contain a high proportion of lime.

NEW BARKBY WI President Shirley Franklin, welcomed members to the first institute meeting for 2017. The speaker for the evening was Kate Hubbard, who spoke and with the aid of a power-point presentation on ‘Wildlife Rescue’ in Cairns and around the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Eastern Australia. She visited there about twenty years ago and became fascinated by possums, lemurs and in particular the flying foxes or more commonly known as fruit-eating bats. After listening to another person giving talks she became involved in giving talks herself. Fruit-eating bats have a wing span of at least one yard in length and their skin is like silk, they have hands with very short fingers, live in the highest part of any tree, but they have to travel a fair distance to find their food, which consists of lychees, mangoes and any other juicy fruit they can forage. There are about two hundred species, but one type has lost about 78% of its kind in approximately ten years. When a mother bat leaves her baby to feed, another bat acts as a nanny and looks after it until the

mother returns. The baby then eats the residue of what the mother has eaten. They can cuddle up to a human being and like the texture of T-shirts and Kate enjoyed being in a surrogate mother role. She was also taught how to rescue a bat from the mouth of a snake, some of which can be twenty-six feet long. Afterwards there was a short time for any questions. Mrs A. Taylor gave a vote of thanks for a fascinating talk on the wonderful world of bats. The competition, based on the subject matter, won by Mrs A. Montague with a model of two Owls. The competition trophy for 2016, gaining the most points, was awarded to Mrs V. Cobb. The raffle was won by Mrs B. Storer. The tea hostesses were Mrs D. Broadhurst and Mrs P. Smith assisted by Mrs H. Hutton. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st February with Mrs S. Leong talking on the subject of ‘Black cats, Moons and Ladders’. At Syston Community Centre 7.30pm. Visitors always welcome to attend.

Showstoppers Provide the Perfect Start to Christmas It was a big decision to move the Thurmaston Showstoppers Panto to a week later, but with healthy and noisy audiences, the move certainly paid off. The Friday crowd was a little below expectation, but after that performances were either at full capacity, or close to. From the moment the beautiful enchantress started the show to the final curtain the audience was involved and entertained by an extremely polished and talented cast - A tribute to the hard work in rehearsal. Even the Community Centre with it’s impressive new frontage and festive decorations played its part. Thurmaston Showstoppers, as always, wish to thank their support staff for sound and light, front of house, and for costume and set which once again shone. To our good friends at Thurmaston Print Shop and those kind enough to display our posters, many thanks, we value your support and to our audience for buying a ticket, thanks over and over, see you in the summer and Happy New Year to you all. With a rich variety of planets visiting your sign this month, including Mars, life is certainly set to be interesting, exciting and fun! Venus too, lends its romantic energies and things are likely to escalate as regards 'passion'. Don't be surprised if emotions overspill and intense feelings come to the surface, being as it really is difficult for everyone to remain controlled.

A partner is lucky and comes up 'trumps'! If you follow their ideas then all will be well. You get out and about, catching up with friends and family despite this being a quiet time of year. Some position of power and authority is 'on offer' on the work front and you express your thoughts and ideas quite adequately. It's time to get things exactly the way you want.

You can't help but worry about one thing or another and this could drive you crazy. However, this seems to help you to really get things clarified and sorted out in your mind's eye, ready to be more effective later on when you put them into action. Work is rather fun and you're ready to shine your light around and help others. Yes, they do appreciate you!

CAPRICORN Dec 21 - Jan 19

You're working hard and so are naturally confident of continuing results, including the good will of others. It's easy for you to socialise and enjoy some popularity and you really are 'the life and soul of any party'. But it's your mind that is stealing the show with excellent abilities of application and coming up with ingenious solutions. Others are left standing.

This is a good time of year to save money and watch With some rather tedious issues behind you, you find yourself having to assert yourself and explain clearly your bank account grow. This is a relief after the to others, as well as listen carefully to what they are seasonal festivities. However, there's some hard saying. This has a positive knock-on effect on your work on the domestic front where you might be definances. Work is fun when you fire up your creativity cluttering, re-decorating and re-organising as an early sort of 'spring cleaning'. Work is rewarding and and a colleague turns out to be something of a romantic admirer! Home is so very busy! fulfilling and you really do cheer colleagues up!

A partner has to play things cool and take life seriously, even if this is difficult and challenging at times. There's a sense of you both needing a holiday, to shake off the cobwebs and enjoy yourselves. So soak up some social luck as 'being in the company of others' is likely to cheer you up. Taking time out to read or study will re-energise you.

Work is a little wearisome where you can't help but worry about one thing or another. However, remember that this is all 'in your mind' and may not manifest, so that you can retain some balance. Home is the place to invite family and friends for some postfestive social fun. You could even entertain potential business contacts too! Let your hair down.

You're getting lots of great ideas but this isn't the time to express them, let alone try to put them into action. Cash matters are 'heavy' and it's a matter of 'work, work, work' when you look forward. You have some important decisions to make when it comes to others at work; make sure that you speak to others first, so as to ensure full understanding.

You really want to be happy and 'let your hair down' and are determined to enjoy yourself! Travel gets a look-in when you feel like a change of scene and a trip to the seaside is also a possibility or some other watery venue. You'll feel better about your finances and are actually enjoying working hard and improving the bank balance. Others love your attitude.

Re - The Styles Dear Editor, I’m writing on behalf of the tenants of the Styles, Syston.

We have a large oval shaped green in the centre of the Styles, however, the road is too narrow for vans, lorries and ambulances to navigate around it. One ambulance got stuck and had to send for a second to take the patient as they couldn’t get out to the hole which is about 1.25m/4ft and is waterlogged, with sludge all over the kerb. The water is about 30cm/1ft deep and believe it or not there have been ducks on it! See picture above. The fire engines won’t even come here, they park on Wreake Close and walk up. We have sent a petition to the Charnwood Borough Council, but it has been two years since Mr Blackford, Housing officer, said it’s being dealt with. I’ve enclosed a photograph of the area, shown above, on the green taken on 24th November 2016 and with winter on its way, it is only going to get worse. So I’m writing to you to name and shame. Yours faithfully B. Lovett, Resident of The Styles.

Volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service in Leicester and Leicestershire New Year - New Start Dear Editor, The Royal Voluntary Service are very active in local communities throughout Leicester City and Leicestershire and our friendly, caring volunteers make a real and positive difference throughout the year providing invaluable practical support to older people and helping to alleviate social isolation and loneliness. I would like to take this opportunity say thank you to all of our volunteers for the amazing commitment and dedication that they readily give to us, because without them we would not be able make such a difference to so many people. We are now seeking to recruit more volunteers which will enable us to continue to provide these important services and to develop our work to allow us to work with and support more older people in their local communities. We are particularly seeking volunteer drivers to provide a range of transport support to older people. There are also a variety of other volunteering opportunities available to include Befriending, Ward Rounds, Fundraising, and Administration. Full training and induction will be provided and travel expenses are paid. Interested? Then please call us on 0116 266 7706 or email Leicsrutlandhub@royalvoluntaryservice. org.uk My best wishes to all of your readers for a happy and successful 2017. Yours faithfully Teresa Gibbs Operations Manager

The

’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 20th December 2016

There were 18 councillors and three members of public, plus Adrian Ward and two police officers Sgt M. Legaye and PCSO Jo Freeman. The reflection was read by the Chairman Cllr P. Henry. Apologies were received from Cllrs M. Carnal and County Cllr D. Houseman. Declarations of interest were made in relation to certain items on the agenda from Town Manager; Mrs C. Voyce and Cllrs H. Midgley and J, Midgley along with Cllr S. Hampson. In the adjournment for matters arising from the public your editor took the opportunity to update council, as there have been many new members since the Newspaper began 20 years ago. I gave a brief history of the newspaper and how it supports and works with the community including the Council. I explained that we are an independently owned business and will be celebrating our 21st birthday next December 2017. We hope to continue to provide Syston’s only dedicated newspaper for many more years. The Chairman's Announcements and communications included the sad news of the death of Mr Brian Henshaw. He said that he attended the funeral, which he found moving and that a lot of local residents were also present. He said that Brian would be missed. The Police report was given by Sgt M. Legaye who went through and answered any questions raised. She said that she would be leaving the Syston beat to be based at Loughborough but that she would be replaced by Sgt Laura Milward. She went on to say that the streetlights are now being kept on in Lindesfarne Road after complaints by residents and an increase in crime. One arrest was made when an individual was caught in an unsecure vehicle. Adrian Ward, Monitoring Officer for Charnwood Borough Council was introduced by the Chairman Cllr P. Henry for the item on the agenda relating to Recommended sanctions from the Code of Conduct Committee. The introduction stated that all Councillors had received a detailed set of notes including information for those councillors who hadn’t attended the panel meetings and that it was not for discussion, he then handed over to Adrian Ward. Adrian Ward explained his role and responsibility for dealing with complaints of any breach councillors have made under the Localism Act of 2011. This Act lets every local authority adopt a code of conduct and Syston Town Council has its own. CBC can consider the complaint and whether or not there was a breach they cannot impose sanctions. Mrs Voyce complained against Cllr J Midgley after a 28

fact finding exercise and giving the councillor an opportunity to give her view on the complaint by independent persons not linked to either parties, they agreed there was a breach. He then appointed an independent gentlemen without connection to Leicestershire to consider the evidence and he found several breaches by Cllr J Midgley. A hearing was held and a panel found that four out of six complaints had been breached. She was given an opportunity to appeal, which upheld the original panel findings. A formal letter outlining recommendations was sent to the Syston Town Council stating that Cllr J. Midgley should be removed from the position of chair of amenities and any not be allowed to be chair of any for other committee for 18 months, and for the council to give serious consideration of engaging an independent person to act as liaison between Cllr J. Midgley and Mrs C. Voyce. The panel stated this was a very serious matter and the need for mediation was important, not just between the two individuals, but also as a wider concern for the whole council to engage in some support to build relationships. The Chairman thanked Adrian Ward for a succinct overview, then expressed the three points and the need for the council to address all three points. Cllr S. Visavadia asked if there had been any mediation. Adrian replied, saying that this was raised at the panel and they don't have any jurisdiction before a code of conduct complaint is made to the monitoring office. Cllr C. Dolan, asked about the second point; is that to prevent any future problems between Cllr J. Midgley and Mrs C. Voyce or is it a sanction. Adrian Ward responded by saying that the panel saw it as both a sanction and an avoidance of any future problems. CLlr J. Branston said she wants the council to work together. A proposal to accept the recommendation points 1,2,3, was passed with some against and two abstaining. County and Charnwood Borough Councillors (CBC) Reports Cllr E. Vardy spoke about the upgrading of the Midland Mainline to electric and that at some point in the future the bridge on Melton Road may need to be raised. Following the meeting your editor has established that there are no immediate plans by Network rail to start work on the bridge in Syston. County Cllr S. Hampson reported that the leader at Leicestershire County Council is trying to solve the lack of funding. He said that this was the price for running an efficient county council, the more they save the more they are asked to save! It www.systontownnews.co.uk

affects all levels of councils, adults in the community budgets, he asked that anyone affected by these cuts to contact Steve. Sir Alan Duncan put a proposal for a new ring road for Melton Mowbray and should be ready for 2020. He said that flooding plans were in place and flood wardens were needed, anyone interested contact the office. Finally, he mentioned the commemorations planned for the Battle of the Somme 100 years on, with memorials to be in the cathedral and County Council offices. Cllr T. Barkley reported on the CBC network events held to help devise plans for further development in Syston with the waterways to develop the old sanatorium. He repeated the need for flood wardens in our area. There are community grants available so any local groups can apply, see CBC website. The 1st neighbourhood plan completed is for Thurcaston. He finished by wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and New Year. Cllr K. Pacey reported that the new policy document was nearly completed. He spoke about some recent complaints received against taxi drivers including an disabled Olympian who had been refused due to having an assistance dog and this is against the law and can fine the taxi driver up to £1,000. Anyone can notify CBC of a problem relating to one of their licensed taxis, all you need is the number of the taxi from its yellow plaque not necessary the number plate. All minutes were agreed without amendments. The draft precept for 2017/18 was accepted with just three against. CBC are providing £600 for emergency supplies as part of an Emergency/Community response plan. The council would need a panel made up so it was passed onto the development committee for their next meeting. The Christmas event went well and everyone remarked that positive feedback had been received about the lights and how they are good. Cllr E. Vardy proposed a vote of thanks for the successful event. The Town Manager gave her report and updated councillors about forthcoming events in December. A Joules event for the Chairman’s Charity on Friday 20th January and the Civic reception 12th May. The council had received the S106 refund for the skate park refurbishment. Refurbishment of staff room and jubilee room in the new year. Fiona Henry, Editor. Lastly on a more serious note, the assassination of President Kennedy, the first space flight, the first man on the moon, the Cuban missile crisis and England winning the World Cup! We rounded off the night by singing along to some of the songs of the day and drinks and nibbles. A lovely nostalgic evening for those of us of a certain age.

SPOTLIGHT

THE JOURNAL OF SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL FEBRUARY 2017 written by Catherine Voyce Syston Town Council would like to wish all residents of Syston a happy and prosperous new year. Welcome to Cllr Satish Visavadia

Syston Town Council are very privileged to have on board, newly co-opted Cllr Satish Visavadia. Satish brings a wealth of expertise to Syston; from a diverse range of experience at further and higher educational institutions, marketing, working in international markets, managing his own business and also working in the voluntary sector. Satish was previously a Councillor at Scraptoft Parish Council and is now living in Syston. Satish is a Member of the Development and General Purposes Committee which concentrates on ‘street scene’ and is already making a positive contribution to Council; if you see him around, please give him a warm Syston welcome. Co Opted Councillor Vacancy A new vacancy in the Merton Ward is advertised on Town Council notice boards, Community Centre, Syston Town Council website and our social media websites. If anyone is interested and would like an informal chat regarding the role of a Councillor, please call me, Catherine Voyce on 0116 264 5972 or the Chairman, Cllr Paul Henry on 0116 260 9744. Christmas Event and Lights Thank you to those who supported our Annual Christmas Event in December, we were blessed with a fine day and some exciting new stalls. As usual, Father Christmas and his elves were working flat out to cope with the 30

SYSTON TOWN NEWS

steady stream of eager young people all wanting to meet him. Live acts provided superb entertainment throughout the day and even Superman made an appearance. The finale fireworks provided a spectacular tribute to a successful and fun filled day. A big thank you to the Events Panel, Officers and volunteers that helped to make the event such a great success. Thank you to all those that have taken the trouble to voice their appreciation for the much needed new Christmas lights, which really were splendid throughout Syston. Sadly the Christmas tree was vandalised again on several occasions. Skate Park Extension This seems like old news now, but since our last Spotlight article, the Skate Park Extension in Central Park is now complete and is proving to be hugely popular with Syston’s skate board enthusiasts. As with the BMX Track, on behalf of Syston Town Council, I would like to express a huge thank you to the young users who gave up their time to guide us in the right direction with the extension. A polite request to users, please be aware that there are residents living close to the Skate Park and try to keep noise levels to a minimum. Thank you. RoSPA Inspections – Action Plan All recommended actions following the RoSPA inspection of the playgrounds have now been implemented. Fire Risk Assessment of Ancillary Buildings Following a recent Fire Risk Assessment at the Community Centre and all our ancillary buildings, all recommendations have been implemented. Advertising Banners Please be aware that the placing of advertising banners in the public domain requires planning permission from Charnwood Borough Council. This also applies to banners placed on the railings alongside the Brook. Melton Road Public Toilets Some of you may have already experienced the improved facilities in the public toilets. New cleaning www.systontownnews.co.uk

contractors have been appointed and are providing an excellent cleaning service. Sanitary bins and hand dryers have also been replaced in the disabled toilet. Planting of 500 Bulbs – Rotary Club and Tesco Community Champions As part of the Purple for Polio Campaign to help eradicate Polio, the Rotary Club provided us with 5000 purple Crocus bulbs for planting in Central Park in their bid to plant five million purple crocus plants to transform public spaces across the country. Senior Groundsman, David Smith was greatly assisted by Tesco Community Champions, Zoe Roper, pictured and Angie Alexander. We are all looking forward to seeing our purple blooms this Spring. Emergency Community Plan Council are in the process of formulating an Emergency Community Plan. All major emergencies are dealt with by the emergency services, local authorities, utilities and voluntary agencies in a combined response. An Emergency Plan is not meant to substitute these services, it is to cater for extreme circumstances (eg extreme weather conditions) that could prevent the emergency services from reaching an emergency scene quickly. In such cases, there may be a great enough need to trigger an Emergency Plan into action. There is no statutory requirement for such a plan; however, it is good practice and Leicestershire County Council have been communicating with Town and Parish Councils through their Clerks with recommendations and guidance for the formulating of such a plan. Charnwood Borough Council are providing funding for any emergency provisions required. FEBRUARY 2017

U3A Open Day The extremely popular U3A group held an excellent open day at the Community Centre in November. The event was officially opened by Chairman, Cllr Paul Henry, pictured above, accompanied by myself. Close to 250 people attended the event and 68 new members signed up on the day. U3A offer a diverse range of activities (over 30) such as genealogy, painting, singing as well as outings to the theatre and local restaurants. See their website http://u3asites.org.uk/syston for further information.

Panels Pavilion Panel The Council is still actively seeking funding towards the Pavilion refurbishment and a professional bid writer has also been appointed to assist us with the larger bidding applications.

Syston Rotary Club Do You? Enjoy Meeting New People? Enjoy Sampling New Experiences? Enjoy Learning about Local and Worldwide Projects? Like to Give Something Back to the Local Community? If you said yes to any of the above, then Syston Rotary Club would like to meet you. What Is Rotary? Rotary International is a worldwide organisation that not only supports international causes but also contributes to local projects and causes either by fundraising or by giving practical support and time whilst the emphasis is also having fun in good company. Rotary can also provide excellent business networking opportunities. Local Rotary Syston Rotary Club has developed as a ‘satellite’ club of the well-established Rotary Club of Wreake Valley and we are hoping to attract people of all ages, female or male from all walks of life to join us at our fortnightly meetings. We have been around for about one year. One meeting each month is a business planning meeting held at 7.30pm in the Hub café on the corner of High Street and Upper Church Street, Syston. We discuss the projects we would like to support, how and when we can contribute to them. In the last year, we have worked with the Wreake Valley club with the Watermead Fun Run to support Alex’s Wish, a local charity that supports research into treatments for Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy.

We also organised a beer festival to coincide with the Syston Carnival. All beers were supplied by Leicestershire breweries, thereby supporting local businesses and proceeds were donated to the Soar Valley Music Centre which provides music lessons for children and allows them to participate in musical activities that schools are no longer able to provide. Our second meeting a month is a social event; we have undertaken a wide variety of activities from meals out; sausage making courtesy of local butchers, Gamble & Hollis; walks with the ranger from Leicestershire Wildlife Trust at Cossington Meadows and an evening on the putting green and driving range at Beedles lake Golf Club. We have supported other Rotary Clubs in quiz teams, meals and a sponsored walk of the Leicestershire Round to support the new visitors centre at Bradgate Park. So, there is an extremely varied range of activities with something to suit everyone’s taste. You don’t have to do them all but we won’t ever stop you from joining in! The great sense of achievement you will experience in helping the local community and others around the world will be matched by the fun you’ll have doing it. Our next meeting is 7.30pm at the Hub café on Monday 13th February 2017. If you are interested you can contact Fiona on 0116 367 2892 or Paul on 0772 037 4510 or just turn up, we will be delighted to meet you.
