What a Week Wreake Valley Academy Had for Children in Need!

Year 11 Students, Chloe, Charlie, Darcie, Megan and Taylor with Pudsey

As Wreake Valley Academy are in the top 150 schools in the country for our Children in Need fundraising, our Charity Council started planning for our event back in September and

began by decorating the whole school in spots to promote the ‘Spotacular’ theme. Determined to make it bigger and better than ever before, we roped in the whole school and even got the local community involved. We had a visit from Pudsey Bear himself, arranged by the BBC, on Wednesday 16th November and we had great fun taking him around our local Primary schools, meeting pupils, staff and parents and even taking part in an assembly. The reception he got from them all was so welcoming that he came back again over the next two days and joined in with all of our other activities within school. We had cake sales, a tuck shop, a Pudsey Nail Bar and netball & football tournaments throughout the week. On the Thursday, Pudsey posed in our very own Pudsey Photo Booth, which was a huge success. We also had splat the teacher which our

Principal, Mr Pinnock, and other staff, were brave enough to take a turn in as well as our local Police Constables’ who were kind enough to come along and join in the fun. One of the highlights of it all was our raffle, for which we had over 50 prizes which included; a signed LCFC shirt, a signed Leicester Tigers match shirt, a signed basketball, tickets to the Basketball League Final match at the Barclaycard Arena, a voucher for a family of four to enjoy a session at the Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre and some tasty treats from Greggs, to name but a few. On the Friday, as well as all of the other activities, we had the staff v students football match, where staff were lucky enough to borrow the red LCFC football kit to play in, in an attempt to unnerve the opposition. Unfortunately, their attempt was in Continues on page 20

Broad Street Playgroup

The Broad Street Playgroup meets in the Catholic Church Hall and have recently redeveloped their garden area, see our picture above. It now boasts all-weather grass and new play equipment which enables the children to play outside all year round, extreme weather permitting! The playgroup offers a warm, fun and friendly environment where the children learn through play in both their indoor and outdoor environments. One of the parents, Kathryn Harris said “My eldest son started at the playgroup in September last year and has developed rapidly over those 12 plus months in their friendly, caring and stimulating environment. They have excellent facilities which are always spotlessly clean and tidy and their redeveloped garden with the play equipment is great fun for the little ones. If the weather doesn’t permit outdoor play the children are still able to run around in the hall and play on the bikes and other ride-ons. My son is always excited about going to playgroup to see his friends and has built up a good relationship with ‘the ladies’. The ladies genuinely care about the children they

look after and get to know them, their parents and their siblings really well. My 18-month-old is looking forward to being able to go there when he is two and I know that he will be well cared for and develop in leaps and bounds like his brother.” Spaces are currently available for children aged two to five years. Their sessions run from 9.00am to 12noon Monday to Friday and 12.40pm to 3.40pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. They also have a lunch club on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you have any old craft items, paper, card, beads, even old CDs or birthday cards then the playgroup would be happy to receive them to use with the children during creative play. You can contact the playgroup on 0770 250 4113.

Queniborough Fireworks Display Following communications from our readers we contacted the November 5th Committee to enquire as to what happened at event this year and what follows is their response. On Saturday 5th November, the firework display in Queniborough was stopped due to safety concerns. At the time, we assumed this to be damage being caused to one of the properties that line the field as the owner was reporting it to us. However, later into the night and on Sunday we got messages and saw comments saying that the resident of the property in question had walked onto the field into the restricted area and the fireworks team stopped for safety reasons. This person tried to call one of the committee members (but wasn't heard for obvious reasons), and instead of coming down to the main gate to speak with a member of staff directly, walked onto the field in order to force a stop. We do want to stress that this wasn't someone breaching the safety barrier at the front (which is also marshalled), but rather someone entering the field

from their property and forcing the fireworks to stop by being in the restricted area, claiming property damage and saying that it was unsafe. On the field, we have a senior firer from the firework provider, a fire safety officer who is also an ex-fireman. None of these said that it was unsafe - if they had, it wouldn't have happened in the first place. We also carry out all the required risk assessments, which are sent to our insurance provider (and I believe our firework provider), and if they didn't approve it wouldn't happen either this is why we didn't have a bonfire a few years ago, so our insurers have no issue either. The committee will now be thinking and deciding what we are going to do next year. The fireworks were stopped at around minute 19 of a 20 minute display, and only a few fireworks were still remaining - those that attended saw 99% of the display and it was only the last few fireworks remaining which were missed. We wish to thank everyone who supported the event and turned out for the display and hope to provide this very popular event next year.

Queniborough WI Another W.I. year is over for Queniborough as we held our AGM at the November meeting. Proceedings included a review of the year as well as the Financial Report and lots of thanks to not only the committee but also to all the membership for their continuing commitment and support to the club throughout the year. We also had a visit from PCSO Brian Geeson of Charnwood Police who held our attention with his informative chat about not only personal safety but also protecting our property. Come and join us on Wednesday 7th December at 7.45 p.m when our speaker will be Penny Hodgson, librarian to the Rich and Famous, you will be warmly welcomed. Wendy Taylor President 0747 871 9929. New year, New you, New start for someone else…?

Dear Editor, As Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church had such a generous response from local swimmers and their sponsors, I am writing, to let all those who helped in any way with the Sponsored Swim at South Charnwood Pool on Sunday 25th September, know the final amount of money which they helped to raised. The swim raised a total of £1,903, which will go towards the Friends’ building fund for a project to build a small extension at the back of the church which will house two toilets for the disabled and also bring a supply of water into the church. Very many thanks to all who helped with the swim in any way. We are extremely grateful for the generous local support we received. Yours Sincerely, Felicity Austin, on behalf of Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church.

Wreake Valley Rotary Club’s seventh annual Watermead Challenge charity run in July attracted a record entry of over 450 runners. The result means the Rotary Club are able to make a £3,000 donation to the Rothley based Alex’s Wish charity. Alex is ten and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The money will help to fund vital research and clinical trials for all children and young adults living with this condition. The event was supported by the new Syston Rotary Club and Chris Thorpe of that club said: “We are delighted to make a donation to such a worthwhile local cause. Emma Hallam, Alex’s mother and founder of the Alex’s Wish, is an inspiration and the driving force behind the charity.” The photo shows David Brown, President of Wreake Valley Rotary Club, presenting the cheque to Emma Hallam, with Chris Thorpe (left).

As we approach the festive season and enjoy lots of parties, family meals etc, there is a tendency overindulge! Come the New year, some of us may be looking for a way to redress the balance. Well with the help of herbal a detox you can do so. As always, if you have any underlying medical conditions, please consult a health professional before taking herbal products. This issue we look at two main remedies to help with a natural detox, they are Dandelion and Milk Thistle. Both are good for cleansing the liver by improving its function. Dandelion (taraxacum) is often seen as a weed but it has distinct medical properties and has long been used as a tonic for the liver, acting as an excellent cleansing agent and being one of the most effective detoxifying herbs. It possesses a wide range of active constituents and is also rich in minerals and nutrients. It improves the digestion and the leaves have diuretic and mild laxative properties. Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a large plant with glossy, green, spiky leaves with white veins and large purple flowers and provides a component called Silymarin which is proven to prevent liver toxicity and destruction by enhancing its function and stimulating the replacement of

Please pop along for a chat. Events I am holding a crime prevention event on Saturday 10th December 10.00am to 1.00pm in the Town Square, Syston. I will be covering crime prevention for burglary, theft from motor vehicles and also theft of cycles. Please feel free to bring along your cycle to be property marked. Crime Prevention Advice There has recently been a number of break-ins into garages in Syston. Please ensure you are locking your garage with a good quality lock or consider using an alarmed padlock. Ensure items such as cycles or motorbikes kept inside a garage are also locked and secured. Any tools kept in a garage ensure they are property marked. Consider the following: Install a garage alarm. Install security lighting that covers the garage. Fit a garage door blocker on the outside of the door. This product bolts permanently to the floor, has a large 'T' bar shaped restrictor and a quality locking device. Consider purchasing loop cables. These have a long braided steel cable and a two-bolt anchor locking point. These fix to garage walls or floors and can be passed through expensive property such as quad bikes, etc. Some cables are alarmed. Please also continue to check that your cars and vans are locked properly. Evidence shows that criminals are checking handles and getting lucky.

I have done further checks on vehicles on Roundhill Close and found one insecure car. On the Chestnut estate, checking four streets, I found three insecure cars. All owners were advised. Please also ensure all valuables are removed from vehicles. Please also ensure with the frosty icy mornings approaching you do not leave your car unattended whilst it is defrosting. It only takes a second to be stolen. Whilst on patrols I shall also be looking out for homes left in darkness. If we think no one is at home so will burglars. Please leave a light on. Any homes found in darkness will be left our ‘lightbulb’ leaflet. I do have a number of light timers available that can be used to make a lamp/radio come on whilst out. Syston in Bloom’s annual front garden presentation evening was held at the Queen Victoria on Tuesday 18th October, to which all those who entered, and their guests were invited. The standard of entry was again high, and this posed problems for the judges in deciding the winners. The judges, were Derek Cox, and Josie Hutchinson, together with last year’s winners Roy Palmer, Zoe Stoneley and Lorraine O’Brien, who also awarded the certificates. Category winners were Mr Sai, for his garden in Swallow Drive, St Peters Court for its community garden, Grosvenor Snooker Club for its outdoor area and Ruth Snape and Maria Berta jointly for their spring gardens. Brenda Lovett received a Judges Award for her front garden. The Syston Town Council shield was awarded to Ruth Snape for her entries in both the spring and summer competitions, see photograph above.

BBC Radio Leicester’s Ady Dayman came down to interview Mr Whitbread, see Stn picture below, our PE teacher and Charity Council Leader during the game about all that we had been up to and Pudsey came out onto the pitch to pose for a team photo. Ady described the atmosphere of the school as ‘carnival’ and it really was. Friday night saw the Charity Council invited to Leicester’s Curve Theatre to announce the amazing £2704.74 we raised live on the BBC1 Children in Need appeal show which was a brilliant end to a hectic but fantastic week. Our students were excellent ambassadors for the school throughout the week and we are very proud of them all. We can’t thank everyone enough for their support, so whether you made cakes for our cake sale, donated or bought a ticket to our raffle, splatted a teacher, or wore spots, whatever the contribution you made, you made the difference! Thank you also goes out to parents who are always so generous and supportive of our fundraising. Thank you and well done to all involved! #teamwreake

Among the guests was Rebekah Vardy, Patron of the charity. Hope Against Cancer provides funding for cancer research projects and supports clinical trials in Leicestershire and Rutland. The evening was a great mixture of fashion, hairstyles and conversation. There were clothes from Abiti, evening and occasion wear from Aura Boutique (Syston), Christopher Scotney, Flo & Sang and John Lewis. All provided a Rebekah with Nigel wide variety of designs for both men and women. Malcolm Murphy provided some wonderful and interesting hairstyles. Nigel Rose, chief executive of Picture by David Helsby Hope Against Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland said: “There were lots of stalls, fashion through to jewellery, to Perfume. St Peter and St Paul’s Academy Remembrance

Syston Remembers

Both Year 4 classes led the Remembrance service, which was attended by the whole school, parents and friends. They explained about No-Mans Land and the significance of the poppy.

They then laid wreaths with clay flowers which the children had made. The service also included a one minute silence introduced by the bugle call of The Last Post. Continued from page 20

In the week of Armistice, Syston held two events to remember all those who gave their lives during conflicts past and present. On Friday 11th November the Town Square was filled with people all proud to take part in the short service led by Rev’d John Newer. The Royal British Legion standard Bearer brought along some poignant background music and as no trumpeter was available this provided the appropriate signal for the silence at 11.00am. The village bakery closed their doors and all stood in silence along with many residents. On Sunday 13th November the Armistice parade assembled in the Melton Road car park. This year the Syston twinning were joined by seven members from our twinned town

Syston Town Council including the Chairman Cllr Paul Henry, members of the Royal British Legion and Veterans, a representative from the police, Syston Twinning with members of the Deville les Rouen twinning. These were followed by the young people organisations of Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows. The 1181 Air Squadron ATC completed the parade. The residents and visitors all congregated in and around the Memorial for the Act of Remembrance led by Rev’d Jackie Bullen and the local Royal British Legion that included the silence at 11.00am signalled by the last post and completed with Reveille; played by a member of Syston Band. The Kohima Epitaph was given and the laying of the wreaths were laid while the Syston Band played ‘Abide with me’, quietly and members from the Scouts, Guides, ATC and Royal British Legion read out the names of the dead who appear on the Memorial. The hymm; O God, our help in ages past, was sung accompanied by the bands. Followed by prayers and the blessing. The parade reformed and made its way to St Peter and St Paul’s Church for the annual Royal British Legion Remembrance Service at which this year the new book of remembrance was dedicated.

to model a few things, and Mr Leicestershire (Grant Cotton), too.” It was the charity’s fourth annual fashion show, each one sponsored by Weightmans LLP in Loughborough. Aura Boutique Picture by David Helsby

This year’s event has raised £5,000 so far. In 2012, Hope Against Cancer established and opened a dedicated clinical trials facility at Leicester Royal Infirmary to offer patients access to new medicines and therapies. The facility is a partnership between the University of Leicester, University Hospitals of Leicester and Hope Against Cancer and is the first of its type based outside of London. Deville les Rouen, France, who, as is traditional in France, brought with them a beautiful wreath of fresh flowers. They commented on how large the parade was and about how many young people were involved and were very moved by the whole event. The parade this year was led by the Syston Scout and Guide band, followed by the Standard Bearers of the Royal British Legion and a Scout. Behind them were the members of

beautiful sunrise while walking toward our first peak Rosset Pike (651m), the second peak was Allen Crags (785m), I didn’t do this one as I was saving myself for the big one, Scafell Pike (978m) which was very busy, after a steep clime through gentle Lake District 5 Peak Challenge. rain and slippery boulders. After lunch at the top we made our way back down and onto the next two, these were Ill Crag (935m) and Great End (910m). It was great to get back down to the car park and pub before dispersing back to our homes or overnight stays. We finally got back to the car park at about 7.30pm to be greeted by one of the leaders with our Challenge Medals. Having now received the GPS information from one of the leaders I can tell you we did approximately 40,000 steps, in a distance of just over 14 miles in around 12 hours with a 1400m of ascent and descent. Despite the pain, I felt really good and proud that I have achieved the challenge. At the time of writing this the legs are now recovering, I walk rather than hobble now! The council has to balance costs across its services in order to work for the benefit of the residents of Syston. Councillor for each ward as well. This should start early next year. The next step will be that Syston Town Council will be invited by Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) to join the steering group, to give continuity. He thought that this was an exciting project and something that is needed. Cllr T. Barkley talked about the preparation for winter, floods etc. He also spoke about NHS Charnwood working to get an action plan, to raise awareness against hate crime so as to reduce people feeling vulnerable. This led him into speaking about raising awareness on mental health issues. The setting up of an Anti-fraud initiative to make sure public funds are being used properly. He finished with the children activities during half term. Cllr K. Pacey reported on the increase in licensing problems, either application or investigating problems. Pacey replied that they are and they have to comply with current regulations. They don’t use meters, it is all done through using an app on a mobile phone. What CBC have done is to ask for a visible sign in the vehicles. It is how they operate as a taxi that is changing. County Councillor D. Houseman’s report was tabled in his absence. Full council minutes were agreed after an addendum to add missed comments made by two councillors made in support of the ground staff. All committee minutes agreed and passed without amendments. Josie Branson wondered if a piece go in the Syston Town News. Cllr K. Pacey explained a little about the service including laying of stones onto the stone memorial in Loughborough. Cllr T. Barkley asked if the council could find out if a service is held in Syston. Quotations for Consultancy Feasibility Study for the Contracting Out of Grounds Maintenance at Syston Cllrs had received a document before this meeting. The Chairman said he felt that their is a simple resolution; to decide to take this forward or not. The Chairman was asked what was the purpose of doing this? He replied as a matter of course they need to look into all aspects of their service. After a brief discussion where councillors voiced their support of the ground staff and the service they provide. It was also stated that the Council has to review its services provision in order to give the residents the best value for money. It was agreed by a majority (four against) not to engage the consultants, to abort the process and continue with their own grounds staff. PUBLIC NOTICE BREACH OF SYSTON TOWN COUNCIL’S CODE OF CONDUCT At a hearing on 7th October 2016 a Panel of Charnwood Borough Council’s Member Conduct Committee found that Syston Town Councillor Janet Midgley had raised gossip about the Town Manager, had prevented her from speaking at Amenities Committee meetings, had instructed her about Remembrance Day arrangements in a manner which was demeaning and humiliating, and that her general conduct towards the Town Manager was overwhelmingly one of harassment and a lack of respect. The Panel concluded that these actions represented a breach of the following sections of the Town Council’s Code of Conduct: e) Listening to the interests of all parties, including relevant advice from statutory and other professional officers, taking all relevant information into consideration, remaining objective and making decisions on merit, h) Behaving in accordance with all your legal obligations, alongside any requirements contained within the Council’s policies, protocols and procedures, including on the use of the Council’s resources, i) Valuing your colleagues and staff and engaging with them in an appropriate manner and one that underpins the mutual respect between us that is essential to good local government, j) Always treating people with respect, including the organisations and public you engage with and those you work alongside. The Panel recommended to Syston Town Council that it should write to Councillor Janet Midgley setting out the breaches of the Code of Conduct, and that she should be removed as Chair of the Amenities Committee and be prevented from holding any position as a Chair or Vice Chair for at least 18 months. The Panel further recommended that the Town Council should arrange for formal mediation between Councillor Janet Midgley and the Town Manager, and that it should consider engaging assistance to promote good governance and to improve working practices both between councillors, and between councillors and employees. Councillor Janet Midgley has lodged an appeal against the decision of the Panel. Adrian Ward Monitoring Officer Charnwood Borough Council DEC 2016/JAN 2017

SYSTON TOWN NEWS 33

Dr Hurwood Retires I retired as a partner of The County Practice on 30th September, and would like to express my thanks to my patients for the many kind words and gifts I have received over the past few weeks. It has been a true privilege to work in Syston, with a team of colleagues who are so dedicated, hard working and enthusiastic, and to be one of the team caring for such lovely patients – when people say how nice the doctors and staff at The County Practice are, I always say that it’s because we have such nice patients: so thank you everyone. I qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1977, and after serving five years as a doctor in the Army, I returned to Syston, joining my father David as a partner in the practice, and to live locally with Dinah and our two children, Philippa and Guy. For the first twenty years, I covered all my own out of hours care for patients as well as full time surgeries, including seeing patients from home in the out of hours periods, supported hugely by Dinah. I also worked as an Immediate Care doctor, attending car crashes and other emergencies in aid of the ambulance service, taught medical students at Leicester University, and sat on various NHS committees – I will continue as a part time adviser to the NHS locally. I have seen huge changes in general practice over the past 30 years, with General Practice taking on ever more work previously done in

hospitals, and vastly increased bureaucracy: I salute my colleagues who continue to manage all the competing pressures of our vocation. Particularly we will all welcome Dr Andrew Milne, who is joining Doctors Jennings, Chidlow, Corner, Walwyn and Bhatt in the practice. And Syston and the surrounding area has changed too, with so much new housing, the police, ambulance and fire stations all closing; as a child I remember hearing the air raid siren on Eatough’s factory that summoned the fire crew, and watching their maroon engine, with bell ringing, charging along the Melton Road. We have seen the War Memorial move to allow improved traffic flow in the centre of the village, many small shops closing, though replaced by some first class fashion and interior shops. And yet much of the old Syston lives on – the Church and its glorious bells, our precious play parks, the sound of the goods’ trains axles screeching on the tight turn at the Half Croft, and the productive allotments on Upper Church Street. And during my time in practice we became a town! There has been a Dr Hurwood practising at Syston for over 60 years, a tradition that has now come to an end, and though I feel real sorrow on retirement, I take away many precious memories and friendships from my childhood in Syston and as a GP here for the past 32 years, and the future is exciting! Dr Richard S. Hurwood

Pudsey Visits Pre-school Pudsey Bear visited the staff and children at St.Peter & St.Paul Preschool to celebrate Children in Need. The children enjoyed lots of cuddles from him and found his dance moves very funny! They then had the opportunity to have their faces painted, decorated Pudsey pictures and tucked into a picnic tea. Pudsey took time out from his busy photo shoot to play in the sand with the children. Pudsey merchandise was also on sale and over £70 has been raised for Children In Need. The pre-school currently has some afternoon spaces available for three and four year old funded children only, please contact the pre-school on 0116 269 8638 for more information.

Wreake Valley Academy Football In recent weeks the Wreake Valley Academy Football teams have had the opportunity to play against visiting schools from Toronto, Canada. Both Year 10 and Year 11 represented the school to the highest level and as a reward WVA were able to put together a great opportunity for them. They were able to take 20 students to the Champions League match where Leicester City played FC Brugge at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday 22nd November. Prior to the game, students received a 90 minute football training session from Gerry Taggart at St Margaret’s Pastures, followed by some food and drink. They then had the amazing opportunity of walking out on the pitch at the start of the game and waving the Champions League centre circle flag prior to kick off. Afterwards, they watched the game and cheered Leicester on to a 2-1 victory, thus witnessing Leicester proceed to the knockout stages of the Champions league for the first time.
