Syston Local History Group Annual Exhibition
The annual exhibition of the Syston Local history group took place on Saturday 16th September and there were some new boards to explore. One looked back at the history of Syston Cricket Club which can trace its roots back to 1904 when the current club began. It had a lot of
interesting facts about how the club has grown and developed from that date and how it had moved around the town from the Cricket Field between 1902 - 1929 and 1939 1949 this is now Central park. Land on the Fosseway between 1930 - 1938, now part of the Hobby Horse estate and Memorial Park from 1949 - 1974 before finally moving to their current ground off of the Fosseway. There was an interesting board about local bus company ‘Poles Buses’. There was a feature on property sales, showing how properties have changed and prices increased. Plus a new enlarged photo of the Memorial
Park, sometimes incorrectly referred to as donkey park. Memorial Park was purchased by donations from the residents and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars. Today it is a well used sports ground maintained by Syston Town Council on behalf of the residents. A pavilion which is in need of refurbishment provides changing facilities for the footballers who play here. It is hoped this will be refurbished in the near future, finances permitting. Millipix had enlarged a photograph of Syston Village circa 1930’s, the group wanted to thank them for doing such a good job. This is always a very interesting event, whether you are a Systonian or new to the area. Well done to all involved in organising it. Film Reviews by Adam Ray Palmer London Film Festival Special As I focused last month’s edition on the Venice Film Festival, it would be rude of me not to focus this month on the London version. We can’t be festival-ist can we, folks? Below are four mini-reviews of movies you can catch this November. Two on the big screen and two on that streaming service called Netflix… where you can chill and that! The Meyerowitz Stories I’m starting with the best I saw at LFF. The premise is simple. An estranged family gathers together in New York for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father. What’s not so simple is the family itself. Starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel and Emma Thompson; the family come together when times are hard following father Harold (Hoffman) taking ill. They bicker, they laugh, they cry and they heal. The twohour runtime is a joy from start to finish with the experienced writer/director Noah Baumbach getting the best out of his
script and talent. Don’t miss it. Streaming on Netflix now Wonderstruck If you have seen Todd Haynes’ Carol, then you will be excited for Wonderstruck – but wait. As you might expect, the production of Wonderstruck is second to none. It’s vivid, colourful and extremely polished. To look at, it’s stunning but sadly I find this particular movie more style over substance. Critics were split at LFF and it’s easy to see why. It’s just lacking that emotional punch it promises you. Wonderstruck tells the story of a young boy in the Midwest simultaneously alongside a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years ago as they both seek the same mysterious connection. Out in the UK from mid-November 2017 Mudbound We’ve all seen films that have a focus on racial and diversity issues in early American history but what Mudbound offers is the former, as well as another angle to consider. Mudbound follows two men (Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell) who return
home from World War II to work on a farm in rural Mississippi. They both struggle to deal with adjusting to life after war. Dee Rees’ direction is engrossing and the screenplay ticks along with high intensity. The cast have talent in abundance with support from Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke and Mary J Blige. As you might expect, this crescendo of an ending is certainly worth your time. Streaming on Netflix from 17th November 2017 Breathe The biggest disappointment of the festival for me was this… and I say that even after interviewing Andrew Garfield (lovely chap for your information). Breathe tells the inspiring true love story of Robin and Diana Cavendish (Garfield and Claire Foy), an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease. Their heart-warming celebration of human possibility marks the directorial debut of Andy Serkis (best-known for being the Golem-guy). It’s such an emotive and captivating story but the script is so laboured. It lacks the depth that you expect from an incredible tale. It brushes past the heartstrings rather than pulling on them – frustrating, Oscar-bait of a picture. Out in UK cinemas now.

As with any herbal or alternative remedies, if you have an existing health problem please consult your medical practitioner before taking. CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is yet another of the amazing nutrient compounds found in the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Hemp is a source of nutrients unlike any other with an oil containing all the families of essential fatty acids, a protein with all the amino acids human require, and now CBD is set to join this list with its own amazing health promoting properties. Cannabidiol is one of the most prevalent chemical compounds found inside the resin glands (trichomes) of the female cannabis plant. These chemical compounds are known as cannabinoids, substances that bind to special receptors on your cells that are part of the extensive endocannabinoid system found

The endocannabinoid system plays a part in controlling many body functions including mood, cognition, movement, appetite, immune response, sleep, ovulation, and sperm development. The human body produces compounds similar to those in the Cannabis plant, called endocannabinoids. Dear Editor, In response to J. Craven's letter in the last issue, it would have been a LIttle Egret that he saw in Syston as there's at least one paying regular visits to the brook. They feed on small fish, amphibians and other aquatic creatures, are related to herons and can be seen in greater numbers locally at Watermead Park and Cossington Meadows. In addition, Great White Egrets and Cattle Egrets have been seen at Rutland Water. Sightings of novel and exotic birds and insects in the wild can be a delight but come with a warning attached. The Little Egret is a bird of warm climates which is gradually extending its range northwards as are many other species. They are responding to climate change which is presently threatening the survival of many, if not most, forms of life on the planet, including our own. We humans have initiated this present phase of global warming and we have the potential to slow it and halt it but the will to do so seems lacking. There's much we can do, most important perhaps being a switch from the use of fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal) to renewable sources of energy (sun, wind and hydro power). If we don't do this now we are heading for catastrophic levels of warming and the Little Egret could be replaced by a big regret. Gary Freer Syston.

Syston Methodist Church Hall Roof Appeal
The Syston Methodist Church Hall roof has recently been checked and it has been reported that, with the roof having been leaking for some time, there is a urgent need for it to be completely replaced as the roof joists have been affected by the water leaking through. The cost of the repairs and, where necessary replacement, is £25,000! NEW BARKBY WI Mrs A. Wright, secretary of New Barkby WI was the substitute President for the October meeting. After business matters had been dealt with, there was entertainment, provided by Peter and Iris Sayer with friends, Christine and Ben, who sang acappella. They sang songs from different genres within their repertoire as they ‘sang’ for their supper! They are all known as the ‘After Eight Quartet’, so with a little amount of acting out the songs and a few jokes, members enjoyed the light-hearted hour of foottapping songs. Mrs P. Warren gave the vote of thanks. The competition was won by Mrs M. Gamble with a creative piece of card, decorated with four 9’s to depict after eight. She also won the raffle prize. The tea hostesses were Miss E. Loder and Mrs P. Vernon-Wilson. During September, members had joined up with other institutes in the Soar Valley Group at Queniborough Village Hall. The speaker was Pat Hall from Ashbourne, Derbyshire on the topic ‘Life can be funny’, a wry look at life from written letters and observations. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st November in the Syston Community Centre at 7.30pm. This will be the institutes annual meeting. Visitors are welcome to attend.

Syston Resident Celebrates 25 Years of Service at Swinton Group A Syston resident has been honoured at a national awards ceremony this week after clocking up 25 years of service working at high street insurance broker Swinton Group. Ansty Hayles, shown on the right of the picture, with Sam Follows who is an Area Manager with Swinton, was one of 15 customer service associates, branch managers and head office staff recognised at the exclusive event, which was held at the King Street Townhouse, Manchester. Ansty began her career in 1992 as an
office junior in the Leicester branch of Colonnade Insurance, which was bought by Swinton in 2002. She has managed a number of Swinton branches in and around the Leicester area and now works as a customer service associate at the firm’s branch on Welford Road, helping customers find the right cover for their individual insurance needs. On receiving her award, she said: “It’s the customers and my colleagues that make the Welford Road branch of Swinton such a great place to work. Every day is always filled with new challenges and opportunities and I still help some of the same customers as when I first started - we have such a good rapport, they’re like old friends. When I started at Swinton I didn’t expect to work for the company for such a length of time but now that I have, I can’t imagine being anywhere else.” Gilles Normand, CEO of Swinton Group, said: “Our loyal, hardworking colleagues are the backbone of our business and it is their hard work that makes Swinton thrive. As this year marks Swinton’s 60th anniversary, it makes me especially proud to recognise the achievements of those who have been with us for such a long time.”
St Mary’s Church, Barkby We had a lovely time at our Macmillan Coffee morning recently, a great crowd came for a get-together and we made £405 for this worthwhile charity. The Church was beautifully decorated for our harvest festival the following day, which made it a lovely idea to walk around and admire the food and flowers arrangements. After the harvest service the food was shared equally between the Glenfield Project (a children’s home), the Carpenters Arms in Loughborough, a place helping the homeless and addicts, and LOROS. The collection was given to Water Aid to provide clean water to those who do not have it already. On Sunday 12th November at 6.00pm we have our Service of Remembrance with a bugler and British Legion flag bearers. Our next event is ‘the biggie’ - ‘It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas again!’ Taking place on the Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November. See What’s on page 27. We also have our Service of Light on Sunday 26th November at 6.00pm when the Christmas tree lights outside the church are switched on for the Christmas period. Each light has been dedicated as a remembrance of someone who has died. Our Christingle service aimed at children from baby to 99+ is at 10.00am on Sunday 3rd December. We look forward to welcoming you at one or all of our events.

in your home well in advance of the fireworks starting. Make sure you take your canine friend out for their evening walk or to toilet nice and early so that there’s no chance of any firework surprises when out and about. Once all furry friends are safely tucked up inside, turn the TV or radio on, this will help to disguise any fireworks sounds. Remember, your pet will be looking to you for cues on how scared they should be! So, avoid fussing them and comforting them, as this will just reinforce that there is something wrong. Instead, carry on, as usual, keeping yourself calm and relaxed. The same applies for feline friends, don’t try to hug them or carry them, as this can make them feel more stressed. Also, don’t forget your long-eared friends… This can be a scary time for rabbits too. If your rabbit lives outdoors, move their hutch into a garage or a shed. If this is not possible, use a loose, breathable blanket to cover the front of their hutch to help shield them from the noise and flashing lights.

Inter Care’s Ladies Afternoon Tea
Thank you to all who attended our Ladies Afternoon Tea, at Occasions Tea Rooms, Syston, on 25th September, with special guest Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire Jennifer, Lady Gretton JP. We were delighted to welcome both new and existing supporters for afternoon tea, followed by a craft session - rag wreath making. A huge thank you to Emma and the team at Occasions, for the delicious and beautifully presented freshly baked food - we can defiantly say nobody left hungry!
Everyone enjoyed hearing Lady Gretton talk about the work of Inter Care and why she has supported the charity for many years. Our guests also enjoyed the wonderful food in the retro-themed venue and the rag wreath session provided by Julie, who helped us master the art of creating beautiful, colourful designs. The event raised over £100 towards Inter Care’s vital work supporting rural health units in some of the poorest parts of Africa. From everyone at Inter Care – thank you!

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Ladies Friendship Circle On Monday 25th September the group met and were entertained by librarian Penny Hodgson. In 1854 Jemima Dunning Smith donated 5000 guineas for a library at Royal Ascot. In 1888 she increases it to 10,000 guineas. In 1890 a new library was opened to men and women during the day but only men at night! Later women were allowed on Tuesday and Friday evenings to provide ‘harmless recreation’. Gentry and cottagers were welcome to use the library and they did but never at the same time! When Penny was librarian there she had accommodation at Royal Ascot and met Her Majesty the Queen and others of the Royal Family as well as members of the rich and famous. After the talk members voted that the Air Ambulance will be this year’s charity. Margaret Proud At our meeting on 10th October we brought along various items which we had made or created. It was surprising what talents we all had. Several items of crochet and knitting, along with painted and embroidered pictures. Some of the knitted items were ones which had been made and will be passed onto various charities for under privileged children. Following this we all entered into the spirit of a quiz which Cynthia had put together. Whilst we were able to answer some of the questions it was surprising that many of the questions we knew but could not recall them immediately. However this proved a popular half hour and we all agreed that maybe we should try to remember past and daily events. The quiz was followed by the usual much appreciated cup of tea and biscuits. Doreen Payne Harvest Weekend We had a great celebration for Harvest when the 10.00am and eleven30 congregations came together. Our theme was GROWING.
There were various plants, flowers and vegetables that had been GROWING which made the church look beautiful. We also wanted to GROW our box of food items that we regularly send to Carpenters Arms in Loughborough into LOTS of boxes. And we did just that with all sorts of tins, packets etc. Our story in the service was about Jesus taking the lunch box of a young boy and GROWING his five rolls and two fish into enough for 5000 people!!! We all ended up with a lunch packet with five bread sticks and two fish sweets to eat!! We then planted a bulb that we want to GROW so that we can give it to somebody later on. Our time together finished off with a Harvest lunch. The members of the Flower arrangers group had transformed the church with every window reflecting a season of the year and aspects of harvest. Once again the east window was decorated this time with greenery and the bright yellow of sunflowers. Skittles Evening Members of the church met at Hoby for an evening of fun and fellowship in the skittles alley at the Blue Bell Inn. It was decided that men should play the women and after three rounds the men won two to one! With the traditional meal of faggots and mash and mushy peas or a vegetarian alternative it was a successful evening. Christmas Tree Festival Many local businesses and organisations are being approached to contribute to this
and already some trees are promised with more to come. There have also been several generous donations. Twyford Guild of Artists Exhibition
Building on the enthusiasm of previous years, this exhibition delighted visitors with a wide variety of media. The Guild members displayed silk paintings, batiks on silk, watercolours, silver jewellery and beautiful stitched textile work. The watercolours of guest artist Ken Forrest proved a great success as did Anita Jarvis’s amazing feather brooches and hat pins. Twyford’s Dotty Gallery showcased a lovely assortment of items including ceramics and wooden carvings. On Saturday Ali Groschl, who often holds workshops at the gallery, had an endless stream of people making the

Barkby & Beeby WI At our meeting in September we started with the good news that our skittle team beat Thringstone 4-1 and the not so good news that the darts team lost to Cossington 3-4. This was followed by a light-hearted talk about the seven myths of belly dancing by Rosanne Dinsdale. The actual name of the dance is Beledi, meaning country dance, the word was misunderstood and became belly dance which is an umbrella term for mid-eastern dance. Rosanne demonstrated the different hand movements, the use of finger cymbals and how it is knee movements that cause the famous hip movements of the dance. The roots of belly dancing are actually in India and as it spread to different countries it has mixed with their traditional dances and influenced other dances such as flamenco and salsa. She told us about the use of the dance in film and showed many lovely dresses worn in her performances, one even included lights and then there was the Egyptian Goddess Wings which were gold and very impressive. This is a very good exercise for all age groups male and female. Why not give it a go!

NOVEMBER 2017
Charnwood Wigs The WIgs have enjoyed talks from : The life of Coco Chanel : We all dressed up for the occasion little black dresses and pearls, her life and loves were very interesting, a very inspiring lady of fashion.
Hambleton Bakery: this small bakery based in Exton, Oakham started off in an old renovated building in 2008 and the bread is baked in a wood fire, it is the best bread we have ever tasted, master baker Julian Carter also took part in ITV’s Britains best bakery, and they won ! We learnt so much about bread making with tips on storage and ingredients.
They pride themselves on using the finest ingredients, mostly locally organically sourced, and they prove the bread for 24 hours producing beautiful crusty bread that will last for five days. They have shops in Oakham, Market Harborough, Oundle, Stamford, West Bridgeford as well as Exton and mostly bake for hotels, you can sample they're loaves at Thrussington Deli!! They brought along samples of bread and cakes that were delicious! So our year at the wigs is nearly over and we have had a good variety of fun! Our last bit of fun will be entertainment from ‘Our Flossie’ to sing ourselves out for our end of year celebrations on Thursday 30th November. We have a fabulous programme coming up for 2018. If you fancy doing something different once a month? Meeting friendly ladies in a lovely atmosphere at Beddles Lake Golf Club. Then come along - It's £4 as a guest to see if it's for you? For more information contact Sharon Astill 07849 888 752.
Technology Help! Due to popular demand, Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland have opened another of their FREE Technology Help Drop-In Groups in Syston for anyone over 50. These take place on 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at the Jubilee Room in Syston Town Council Community Centre, School Street between 10.00am and 12noon. Jeanette Silver, the Development Worker for Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland said, “So far, the groups have helped people with their Smart Phones, Tablets, iPads and Laptops with questions ranging from ‘How do I switch it on’ to answering quite detailed questions about Windows 10 issues and everything in between! Whether you bring your own equipment or use ours, you will be working one-to-one with a Volunteer who has some experience in Technology - We offer a minimum of 30 minutes. So, if you would like help and guidance, don’t feel overawed by it all, walking over our threshold is the hardest step and a warm drink and a friendly welcome await you!” If you need further details, or you would like to arrange a session for your group, or are interested in Volunteering to support us, just call Jeanette on 01509 260 327 Monday/Wednesday/Thursday.

I remember losing a good friend at twenty-one. As her coffin disappeared behind the curtain at the crematorium I heard a noise that I will never forget her mum let out a scream and it still shudders through me. That was the first time I heard the noise that comes from heartbreak, a noise that comes so deep from your heart, that is uncontrollable and so full of pain, fear and despair. I could feel the heartbreak when David's sister gave me the awful news about her big brother. I would like to dedicate this month's Declans Diary to David Mayes, a friend, an inspiration and all round round top guy who will be truly missed, but never, ever forgotten.

During September, we were treated to a floral demonstration by June Borrowdale, (Carlton-inLindrick, Notts), who is currently First Vice Chairman of North Midlands Area NAFAS, in addition to being an Area Judge and National Teacher. It was the second time she has visited us. On this occasion her title was ‘Artistic Impressions’, a personal interpretation of paintings and the styles of famous Impressionist artists portrayed using floral design. Beginning with the Painter’s Pallet, she created a contemporary arrangement in shades of pink. Set on top of a pewter vase, three phormium leaves gave rear height, two being folded at right-angles then woven through slits in the third stem creating a lattice effect. Liatris provided floral height, leading to a central line of hot pink gerbera which in turn tumbled down one side of the container. A spray of cerise roses complimented this on the opposite side. A hessian ‘pallet’ made by June, and decorated to look realistic, was placed to the right of the design with two further liatris positioned through the thumbhole to indicate brushes. The second design represented the childhood memory of a floral painting which had hung on a wall in June’s grandmother’s house. A two-placement arrangement, the upper section recreated the painting itself via a diagonal design set onto an artist’s
canvas. The lower placement was a large semi-crescent, partly framing and enhancing the upper design. Colours were deep yellow roses with hints of orange; peach carnations; and racemes of purple berries on stems of Leycesteria Formosa. Foliages included red-tinged photinia as outline, plus dark purple cotinus; green bergenia and delicate ferns. Next came a design interpreting the style of paintings by Gaugain. Very tall, and in two parts linked by a floral scarf, it had a tropical theme using shades of bright red; orange; purple; plus hints of yellow. A combination of straight and curled phormium were placed amongst softly arching kentia palms; broad fatsia; and aucuba (spotted laurel). Flowers were exotic, with strelitzia (Bird of Paradise); pin-cushion protia; large purple seed pods; and the ‘painter’s pallet’– anthurium. Another Impressionist, Van Gogh, was echoed by a vertical design incorporating his trademark sunflowers. Set on a high wooden post, with a picture frame intersecting it diagonally, a column of foliage in various shades of green, e.g. aspidistra; bergenia; choisya; fern; and flowers in yellow and purple (iris) overlaid both. The aspidistra had been woven with purple midelino sticks along their length then curved to create a spiral through the central section. The final design was themed on muted colours associated with Monet, famed for his subtle garden scenes. Using a black rectangular metal grid as support, two opposing spray bouquets mirror imaged each other top and bottom. Colours were soft shades of mauve roses and lisianthus; cream carnations; broad green fatsia; and garrya elliptica for line. A shower of very fine bare stems cascaded through the upper bouquet. Members were highly impressed by June’s speed at flower arranging whilst speaking informatively at the same time!

He will formally resign as leader at the full council meeting on November 6 and members will vote on a replacement. Cllr Slater said: “I have to consider what is in the best interests of the Council and I feel after seven years that the time is right to step down as leader. I am incredibly proud of what the Council has achieved while I have been leading it and I would like to thank my fellow members, staff and partners for their support. Leading the council has been a challenge, but an enjoyable experience and I wish my successor all the best for the future. I will continue to remain a councillor at Charnwood, serving the residents in the Quorn and Mountsorrel Castle ward and the Council in whatever capacity the new leader asks me to.” Cllr Slater, 69, joined Charnwood Borough Council in 2001 and became leader in 2010 having previously served on cabinet as lead member for housing and planning.

Town C.C. End Of Season Celebrations Despite losing their last two games to Leicester Ivanhoe and Market Harborough which consigned them to a mid-table finish, Syston Town C.C can look back on 2017 with much satisfaction. They occupied a top three place for much of the summer and league victories over eventual champions Sileby and runners-up Kibworth as well as reaching the County Cup semi-final, demonstrated the improvement made this season. The 2nd XI also had cause to celebrate as they defeated Barwell in their final match to preserve their Division 3 status for next season. Put in to strengthen the team George Corbett (6-22) bowled superbly. Barwell were dismissed for just 111 and Perry Hill (42 not out) saw Syston home to a comfortable 7 wicket victory. The Sunday XI finished in mid-table of the GMCA Division 1 with successive victories. Charlie Taylor cracked 123 not out in the win against Ashby Carington and George Corbett scored his maiden hundred (127) in the defeat of Queniborough. The club held their President’s Day celebration during the final home match of the season against Ashby Carington. Before the start of the game President David Fox, 50 guests and sponsors were entertained to a superb roast lunch in the clubhouse. The meal was provided by Lee and Katie Harding, the proprietors of Rustic Kitchen, and unbelievably the
quality seems to get better and better every year. The whole day was a splendid occasion and long may it continue. The club’s Junior Presentation Evening was held in the clubhouse in October when batting and bowling trophies were awarded to all age groups.
