When he grows up he wants to build houses for all the homeless people he sees! One evening there was one meal left and he knew exactly who he was taking it to, so off we went to Granby Street to a man with a bad leg who he's seen a number of times there. Dion hands the man the bag with a cooked meal and some chocolate, the man shock his hand and then handed a chocolate to Dion said "Please share a chocolate with me". For someone with nothing and still willing to share really touched my heart. In a world where we see parents pull their children away from the homeless because they look dirty or dangerous, we are embracing Dion's passion. As a family we are encouraging Dion along this path and we look forward to seeing Dion help each week, making a small difference to peoples lives. Keep up your good work Dion you are a superstar! Eileen Simpson

Eileen Simpson was a very well known lady in Syston and sadly passed away on Thursday 27th April 2017, aged 92 years. She had worked for the Royal Mail as a post lady until she retired. However, she will be remembered for setting up the Charity, Children’s Leukaemia Cancer Fund, with her sister Betty Toon, after a little girl called Rachel was diagnosed with the Leukaemia and whom they both knew as she lived in Syston. The idea of the charity was to buy a house on Welford Road, Leicester near the LRI for parents to go to while their child was having treatment. Betty was not sure what happened to the house, but it may have been taken over by what is now the Rainbows charity. The picture above shows L-R Keith, Jane, Phil, unnamed, Betty sitting on a bike, Carolyn, Eileen, Dave and unnamed and was taken after they had finished their first Post Office bike ride for the charity. They had got permission to ride on a Sunday, although Betty recalled that for the photograph they were asked to wear their PO uniforms. Eileen then went on to organise Beetle drives, a 10 mile walk on a Sunday morning, for which Eileen, Betty and others made apple pies

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. During April and early May a very small amount of rain fell, so the soil in my garden, like so many other gardens in this area, became very dry and as a consequence, the flowers on plants during this time were very short lived. Among the worst affected were my Rhododendrons, whose flowers lasted only one week before collapsing. However Rhododendron ‘Hydon Dawn’ produced a superb display of rich pink flowers and these

having attractive flowers can be a very troublesome weed whose roots travel through the soil to enable climbing shoots to pop up everywhere. Not all Convolvulus are troublesome weeds as I grow Convolvulus cneorum which is a low growing, evergreen Southern Mediterranean shrub, pictured above, with attractive silvery foliage and throughout the summer it produces a multitude of white, open trumpet shaped flowers with a pink stripe down the outside of each petal. lasted for over three weeks. The This attractive shrub requires a well reason for this was not variety, but the drained soil in a bright position. During fact that during late April, one of the the evening the flowers close up, but two 50 gallon water butts that caught reopen the following day. the water off my garage was I have mentioned in my previous overflowing. The tap on one of the articles that I grow eleven different butts had a short length of hosepipe attached to it at the bottom of the butt terrestrial orchids and in my sandy loam I find the easiest to grow is and the end of this was placed close to this Rhododendron. To stop the butt Dachtylorriza fuchsii and its hybrids between Dachtylorriza maculata, overflowing I turned the tap on, then these even produce the odd seedling forgot about it so 50 gallons of in containers and borders in my rainwater thoroughly soaked the area garden. where ‘Hydon Dawn’ and its deeper pink companion ‘Hydon Hunter ‘grew. From late May into June Dachtylorriza fuchsii produces 12/18 inch (30/45cm) If I mention the word Convolvulus, spires of small flowers that are most people will immediately think of bindweed, or bell bind, which although splashed and spotted with pink.

Even out of flower the foliage looks attractive as the narrow green leaves are spotted with purple. I also have three North American hybrid Cypripedium’s growing closely together in a border and of these ‘Emil’ is an outstanding slipper Orchid whose yellow, open topped bowl shaped flower has a deep purple-red upstanding petal at its rear and a curling purple-red petal down either side. This prefers a moist, but not wet soil into which I work a quantity of old pine leaves. All of my terrestrial Orchids are hardy to minus 15 cel, so there is no need to coddle them during the winter. During mid-May Lunaria annus ‘Albo Variegata’ produces a very colourful 18 inch (45cm) splash of colour in the garden. I grow this in half shade where its creamy-white nettle shaped leaves look outstanding. An added attraction is the pink flowers that stand out against the background of creamywhite leaves. The common name for the green leaf species is ‘Honesty’, both this, and the variegated form produce flat round seed heads. I would point out that Lunaria is an annual, which will self seed in the garden. By the second week in May my ‘Jazzy; potatoes had grown 18 inches (45cm) above the top of the 50 litre black tree tubs in which they were planted and by this time the tubs had been filled with compost to within one inch (25mm) of the top of each tub. By then they had got beyond my ability to drag them back into the greenhouse each night so I decided to stand the three tubs outside in front of an evergreen Honeysuckle and then cover them each night with horticultural fleece. In two weeks time I am going to empty one of the tubs to see if the potatoes come up to expectations.

Beedles Golf Club Cheque Presentation On Friday 28th April, the was invited to Beedles Golf Club to record the presentation of a cheque for £5,391.64 raised across the year by the Captain, Graham Able, in aid of RETT UK. Graham’s granddaughter, Heidi, (21) pictured below, has this syndrome and the money raised will go towards a portable hoist to be used at regional events, plus a new project of education and communication aids.

Our picture above shows Graham presenting the cheque to RETT UK representative Lowri, who also has a daughter with the condition, with family and friends. Graham wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated or supported his year as Captain and that this amount will go a long way to helping girls with this condition. Rett syndrome is a complex neurological disorder. Genetic in origin, it affects one in 12,000 females and a few males. Although signs of Rett syndrome may not be initially obvious, it is present at birth and becomes more evident during the second year. Syston Twinning – because Countries may be different, but People are the same the world over!

Have you had visitors who have stayed with you for an occasional weekend? They may be friends or relatives who have visited off and on for years, which may make it difficult to think of new things to do or places to visit to entertain them. Or you may have agreed to help out by putting up people you have never met before, so you don’t know what they’ll like or dislike. Then throw in the fact that they are French, and sometimes their English is as bad as your French! How will you cope with making yourself understood – and you understanding them? It may sound like a bit of a nightmare and you’d rather not have anything to do with it. In fact it can be a wonderful experience to get together and discover that, as ordinary people, we can enjoy each other’s company and have fun together, whilst realising that our differences aren’t as great as some people would have us believe. This has certainly been the experience of those who belong to Syston Twinning, which has been going since 1980. Over those many years of visiting each other’s homes and seeing children growing up and old friends passing away, it’s natural that finding new ways of entertaining our visitors becomes more of a challenge. However, when our French friends arrived in Syston for their bi-annual visit, there was plenty of entertainment and culture planned for a lively weekend. 18 The Green, Syston LE7 1HQ Tel: 0116 260 6767

It began with the usual drinks reception at the Syston Community Centre, where the French were welcomed, the new hosts and guests were introduced and the weekend’s packed programme was distributed. Following this, some stayed to enjoy the hospitality of the Town Council Chairman, Cllr Paul Henry, at the Town’s Civic Reception, while others were keen to go home to talk and eat. On the Saturday morning, which was cool and blustery, but dry, everyone assembled at Birstall Railway Station to experience the delights of British steam train travel. All were issued with a ‘hop on – hop off’ ticket so that they could enjoy the various activities at each station along the line to Loughborough. At Rothley Station there was an exhibition of veteran vehicles, and some tried the NAAFI tea room which was under the bridge with a kitchen c1940s. Others went into Loughborough and enjoyed a pub lunch and walk around the market before getting back on the train for the return journey to Birstall. In the evening, everyone was invited to Rearsby Village Hall where there was a typically British fish and chip supper, served from Dobson’s van. The entertainment for the evening was provided by the excellent Syston Town Band, led by MD Chris Banks, with the addition of Jean Luc Pigne, pictured here, as a surprise guest representing the Deville Brass Band. Such stirring music soon had the livelier element of the audience up on their feet and dancing, and singing along to favourite tunes. The evening ended with everyone joining in singing of La Marseillaise and the National Anthem, either of which would have easily won the Eurovision song contest! On Sunday, each family arranged various activities for their guests. Some visited the Sherwood Forest Robin Hood centre where there was a medieval fair and a display of training of warfare used in the Wars of the Roses. Some relaxed at home

while others visited Bradgate Park or ventured further afield to Foxton Locks and Warwick Castle with its scary dungeon tour and soaring eagle flights. The day was warm and sunny and it was finished off with another evening of food, fun and laughter. However, a weekend goes by so quickly, and it seemed very early on Monday morning that the coach arrived in the car park to take our friends back home to Deville Les Rouen, along with dozens of library books and hundreds of happy memories. Should you feel that you’d like to be part of this international group, then get in touch with Mrs Kathryn Grocock- Matts, our secretary, on 01509 813 723 for more information about our regular social events and fund raising activities. You’ll be guaranteed of a warm welcome. On the other hand if you’d like to get to know our group better before committing to join, why not come and see us at the Syston Yard Sale on Saturday 17th June, 55 Goodes Lane for some refreshments and a chat.

News from the Jubilee Medical Practice Patients Participation Group The Care Quality Commission report rated the Jubilee Medical Practice as Good.

Plans are being made to run several sessions on accessing how to electronically order your repeat prescriptions and how to make appointments. By using your laptop, computer or mobile phone this can be done at your

convenience even when the Jubilee Medical Practice is closed. Please look out for further details at the surgery and on the Facebook page. The Patients Participation would like to congratulate the Practice Nurses on being the best nurses in the East Midlands for phlebotomy. One aspect for the group is to gain feedback from patients and we received a letter from a six-year-old patient regarding the lack of facilities of any kind, and the problems this causes the other patients and staff. We have passed this onto the practice manager for them to follow up. Patient feedback is welcomed and needed for the Patient Participation Group to work on your behalf.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Diamond Wedding The members of the church were delighted to celebrate with Don and Betty Creasy their Diamond wedding! They were presented with a bouquet of flowers and they showed their congratulatory card form the Queen. Ladies Friendship Circle Our speaker on March 27th was Val Williams talking about her Arctic Experience. This was a second visit by this most interesting lady. She illustrated her talk with a multitude of slides revealing her special fascination with polar bears. She recounted how she and some fellow travellers left the planned route in order to get closer to the wildlife and especially the polar bears, which they did, and judging by the remarkable photos must have been very close! Each photograph was briefly described and explained. An excellent speaker and most entertaining. As April 10th was in Holy Week there was no meeting. At the meeting on April 24th Cynthia Tooth introduced Tim Garner from Syston Local History Society. Tim brought along a number of photographs of Syston spanning several years and we were challenged to identify them. Some were easily identified, others brought back memories and others made us realise how today’s Syston has changed from years ago. Afterwards we shared our own memories of Syston as it was and how it is now. The evening ended with a raffle and tea and biscuits. All money raised at our meetings will go to this year’s charity, Mablethorpe Children’s Holiday Home. Doreen Payne On the evening of Monday 8th May members of The Ladies Friendship Circle went to the Methodist Church to join in their Service of Easter offering. We heard about three ladies who bring light into darkness with female drop outs and street children in Ghana, young offenders in Rio de Janeiro and peace building in Pakistan. It was very thought provoking and offerings of prayers and money were given to help with the work. 18 SYSTON TOWN NEWS

They were able to see the money and the special bags the coins came in! Eleven30 for families is every 1st and 3rd Sunday at 11.30am at St Peter & St Pauls. Why not come and see what we do.... In the afternoon after the last Hour service the bell was tolled thirty three times as a reminder to all those who heard it of the death of Jesus Christ. And then on Sunday we celebrated with a joyous service to celebrate the risen Christ. This was followed by the distribution of Easter eggs and refreshments with special biscuits! Team Service As the 30th April was a fifth Sunday there was a Team service in St Botolph’s church Ratcliffe. The church was packed to celebrate the Communion Service followed by refreshments in the village hall.

Pukka Pies Looking to Expand

On Friday 5th May at the Community Centre, Pukka Pies held a public exhibition for their proposed new production and storage facility on High Street, opposite their existing site. Members of the public were invited to view the proposed plans and ask any questions about the proposal before it is submitted to Charnwood Borough Council for planning approval. What they are proposing is a new 4,750sq metre production and storage

facility within close proximity of the existing Pukka Pies site. A flood compensation and habitat scheme of around four hectares, including new areas of planting and a wetland area. The creation of a formal footpath to connect Fosse Way to the existing public right of way network. Vehicle access from High Street and a new pedestrian crossing across High Street, plus a sustainable Drainage System(SuDS) for surface water drainage. The proposals would enable the company to grow and they expect to create at least 150 new jobs at the selfcontained facility plus a further 50 offsite jobs in Charnwood and an additional ÂŁ25 million turnover growth. If you missed the exhibition but would like to ask a question or make comment on these proposals, you can by emailing: pukkapies@marronsplanning.co.uk, but please do so as soon as possible. Once all comments have been carefully considered, Pukka Pies and Marrons Planning will finalise the proposals and make a planning application to Charnwood Borough Council who will decide whether to grant planning permission. The Council will notify local people when the application is submitted and request views on the submitted scheme.

As one of our long standing family businesses in Syston, they want to remain here and grow, which is good for our community. The land north of High Street has been identified as a potential location for this new

Editor’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 25th April 2017 There were only 10 Councillors (Cllrs), one County Cllr and four members of the public including a police officer present. The Reflection was read by the Chairman Cllr Paul Henry. Apologies were received from - Cllrs K. Asmal, H. Asmal, C. Dolan, J. Midgley, H. Midgley, J. Branston, M. Carnal, S. Gerrard, P. Wright, S. Visavadia. There were no matters raised by the public. Chairman's Announcements - It was announced that the Syston Library had left some cards in reception explaining the new opening hours. The Chairman thanked both retiring County Councillors S. Hampson and D. Houseman for their support to Syston during their time in office. Police report - The police officer in attendance explained that they were now using a new format for reporting to the council and it is in-fact more up-to-date than previously given. He went on to respond to questions asked at the previous full council explaining that a lot of the Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) that has been affecting a lot of people in Syston would hopefully be resolved during May as two families were to

appear in court and evictions were the likely result. He said that although this is not ideal, as they will have to be housed somewhere else, so just moving the problem, because of the level of the problem it would be the best course of action for the residents affected in Syston. One other ASB is being taken to court for a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) and should know in the next 10/14 days if this has been successful. One question raised was with regards to residents complaining of youths riding around the avenues without helmets, were the police aware? The PC replied that they were and that one will have his bike taken from him as he already has a section 59 warning- See police article on page 16. Borough and County Cllrs reports Cllr E. Vardy reported on the Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) responsibility for the economy in the borough and what they do to encourage businesses which links with their corporate plan. He said that the regeneration plan was underway, which should help Syston in delivering the business plans they have engaged with Leics partnership, thus creating a one stop hub for business support, providing

grant aid and business premises to assist growth. CBC are being proactive in developing the borough and help the area to grow. Cllr S. Hampson - LCC reported on commercial satnavs to help reduce wear and tear on roads - there had been isolated problems in Blaby but none were discovered for Syston. The Police and Crime Commissioner, Lord Willy Bach, recently published his annual report and Cllr Hampson gave a summary of this, stating that his aim is to reduce offending and re-offending. The Leicestershire police force had been rated as Good only two forces nationally rated outstanding. Cllr T. Barkley reported that CBC in conjunction with NAAFI have allocated £90k to support veterans and help improve their welfare after leaving the forces. CBC have implemented the corporate plan which gives specific details of what they plan to do. He then spoke about the community grants available and he hoped that local groups would apply. He said that the Great central railway link to Ruddington, Nottingham was being worked towards. He also thanked the two retiring County Councillors.

Sapphire & Ruby This year’s Syston Carnival will be the 40th Carnival since it was restarted in 1977 in conjunction with the Queens Silver Jubilee year. So, in recognition of this milestone, the theme for the 2017 Syston Carnival will be Sapphire & Ruby. Sapphire for Her Majesty the Queens 65th Jubilee year and Ruby for our 40th year. In preparation for this year’s Carnival, charity stall booking forms are being sent out to all those that attended the carnival last year. So, if you have not already received one, or would like a Booking Form, please contact Bob Hendry Tel: 0116 260 9296. Don’t forget the carnival is all about support for local charities and community groups, so why not make the use of this opportunity to either promote your group or to raise funds. We need your support. We are currently a very small team, so any help however small would be very much appreciated, so if anybody would like to help out and volunteer, just on the carnival day itself to help with setting up the equipment and arena, coordinating stall holders, helping with competitions, please either Tel: 0116 2609 296 or attend our planning meetings which currently take place on the first Wednesday of the month at Syston Conservative Club Lounge. In the next issue, we will update you on the main attractions and competitions for the Carnival. In the meantime, if you have any ideas, suggestions, or you are part of a group that would like to promote what you do, please get in touch. There is also a ‘Syston Carnival’ Facebook page.

NEW BARKBY WI Mrs S. Franklin, President, welcomed New Barkby W.I. Members to the institutes May meeting. After business matters had been dealt with, secretary, Mrs A. Wright, who is also a W.I. Adviser, spoke on the two resolutions to be put to the National federation’s A.G.M at Liverpool, in June. 1. ‘How to keep microplastic fibres out of our Oceans’. More research and development is required to reduce synethic fibes, which make up 86% of human-made material. The toxins eventually accumulate in large marine

Mrs S. Franklin gave the vote of thanks to Mrs A. Wright, with a small accompanying gift. There was no competition this evening. Afterwards, members enjoyed some social time and a chance to do a plant swap, or buy any plants, for a small

Are you interesting in the possible healing qualities of natural crystals?

Our picture shows L-R: Amethyst tree, bowl of various crystals and a Quartz light

The Body Store has recently began selling crystals and although there is no scientific research to fully support the benefits of crystals some medical doctors tolerate crystal healing to a limited degree, seeing it as a therapy that can induce relaxation, which ultimately is therapeutic for stress management. Proponents of this technique believe that crystals act as conduits for healing - allowing positive, healing energy to flow into the body as negative, energy flows out. However, as with any alternative methods we would recommend that you do not forgo legitimate treatment for life-threatening diseases. What are healing crystals? Crystal healing is an alternative medical technique in which crystals and other stones are used to cure ailments and protect against disease. How do they work? The philosophy of modern crystal healing is based on traditional concepts borrowed from Asian cultures, most notably the Chinese concept of life-energy (chi or qi) and the Hindu or Buddhist concept of chakras (energy centres), said to

connect the physical and supernatural elements of the body. In crystal healing, stones are assigned various properties, though healers have different ideas about which stones possess which properties. Amethyst, for example, is believed by some to be beneficial for the intestines; green aventurine helps the heart; yellow topaz provides mental clarity. Colours red through violet are associated with seven chakra points on the body. Because crystal healing is a very personal thing there is no ‘starter kit’ as such, if you are interested in learning more about this alternative therapy, call in and speak with Raj, he will help you decide which crystals are best for you.

Syston Bowlers Express Appreciation of Support At their regular monthly Coffee Morning in May, Members of Syston Bowling Club took the opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to the valued support and assistance offered to the Club by Chris Bates, recently retired Facilities Manager at the Tarmac site in Syston. Introducing him to Members, Club Development Officer Colin Grimes pointed out that the relationship had started over 10 years ago when the company, then Lafarge, had generously donated a defibrillator to the Club and arranged related training Club Chairman George Dodge(right), making a presentation to Chris Bates and, for a number of Members. on behalf of the whole Club membership, Shortly thereafter, Lafarge had acted wishing him a long and happy retirement as local sponsor in support of the Club’s successful application to the Derbyshire Landfill Trust (DLT) for grant aid for the installation of the disabled ramp running between the clubhouse and the gates of the green. He went on to say: “Over the years, Chris has arranged for Members to participate in first aid training sessions organised for Tarmac staff, has donated a desk, chair and shelving unit to enable the setting up of a computer room in the Club and repeated the local sponsorship support for a second, sadly unsuccessful, grant application to the DLT for the installation of electric shutters. Through his good offices, the company arranged for a full, professional risk assessment of the Club’s application for parking adjacent to the clubhouse in Central Park. The results of this exercise undoubtedly played a significant part in finally persuading the Syston Town Council to grant permission, after many years of blanket refusal.”

At home to Market Harborough in their first game the visitors posted a respectable 215-9, but rather disappointingly Syston could only manage 102 in reply. Syston hit back in grand style in their next game at Leicester Ivanhoe piling up 221-6 with Charles Wootton (60), pictured, in sparkling early season form and George Corbett (63 not out) leading the way. However, Ivanhoe refused to lie down and in a tense finish closed on 209-8. George Corbett, Umar Razzaq and Perry Hill shared the wickets. At home again, Syston recorded their first victory of the season against Lutterworth. Put into bat, Syston reached a modest 144 thanks largely Charles Wootton to a superb 47 from Charles Wootton. However, despite losing an early wicket, Syston knocked off the runs with five overs to spare. Skipper Umar Razzaq led the way with 69 and Charles Wootton (64 not out) and Daniel Vernon (58 not out) on his debut, easily chased the runs down. The 2nd XI struggled with player availability at the start of the season and consequently the first three games were lost. The only performance of note being 78 by Sachin Moudigal. However in their fourth game, with a stronger team, they won a much needed victory against Leicester Caribbean by seven wickets. There were three wickets each for Joe Dyer and Dave Tebbutt and Paddy Oakman stood firm with 38 not out to see his side safely home. Roger Pole
