Former Syston Fosse County Councillor Dave Houseman The title of honorary alderman was given to Dave Houseman in honour of his ‘exceptional service’ to the authority as he has now retired from active politics. The non-political position was proposed and seconded by serving members of the county council. Aldermen are able to: Attend as an observer at meetings of the council or any other meetings to which the press and public are admitted; Attend major civic occasions in the county;

Our picture above shows: Christine, right with Kayleigh and Lisa. After 17 years in Syston this wonderful shop has closed due to the lease finishing. Christine had created an intriguing collection of plants, grown in her own greenhouses, cut flowers and emporium of garden and gift items, which made it a very eclectic and interesting place to visit and one that will be missed. Christine said "I would like to say a very big and sincere thank you to everyone who shopped over that time. I will miss all the laughter and tears I've shared with customers over the years. But I hope to keep in touch with some of them." Because she grows a lot of the plants sold in the shop, she may continue to supply plants in the future, but after spending three months clearing the shop, the first thing on the agenda is a well earned rest. The Syston Town News wishes Christine, her husband Bernard and the girls all the very best in the future.

Barkby and Beeby W.I A talk entitled ‘Railways Revisited’ was given by Patrick Neal, which certainly opened my eyes to something on the doorstep that I had previously not taken much notice of, although several members had visited this site in the past. Patrick not only told us how the Mounsorrel railway and Heritage Centre came into existence thanks to the foresight of Steve Cramp, but also about the construction. On the 7th of September 2007 five adults and four children started to clear what had been the old railway line, cutting back brambles and weeds and getting extra volunteers to help clear the trees which they then used later onsite. Once cleared, they set about laying the tracks with a little guidance from some railway workers, they then rebuilt two bridges and the station. Once this was completed they made nature trails and picnic areas built from the wood of the felled trees and planted more trees to replace those lost. During this process they learned how to build dry stone walls and lay a hedge, they made bird, bat and owl boxes, put up bird feeders and built bug houses, after which they put up posters to help people identify the different fauna and flora along the trails involving the local children throughout. They also run fox and bat watching evenings and although it's not possible to catch a train to any where from Mounsorrel Station as yet, this is the goal they are working towards once the signals etc. are in place. Steve then decided to build a Heritage Centre. They bought two old buildings which they renovated, one being moved from another location and the volunteers set once again to make the centre and café what it is today. They are now planning an Education centre if they can secure funding. The talk was accompanied by slides showing the progress and a short video of a visit by Prince Charles to the centre. It certainly looks like a place well worth a visit.

Jean Hill (founder Chairman of Roundhill Garden and Flower Club), pictured cutting her cake, celebrated her 90th Birthday with a tea party on Sunday 2nd July at St Luke’s Church, Gaddesby. Every member of the club was invited and six members arranged flowers in the church. Jean taught Flower Arranging at Roundhill School in the 1960s and from there the club was formed in 1969. Jean was Area Chairman of NAFAS East Midlands in 1982-4 (three other former Chairman attended the party) and was awarded a CBE for her services to Flower Arranging and other Charities in 1995. In April, Jean was presented with Maunday Money when H.M.Queen Elizabeth attended the service at Leicester Catherdal. Always a great inspiration to her students, her Flower Festivals in Leicestershire have raised funds for a variety of charities and provided beauty and interest in many Churches and Stately homes. Happy Birthday Jean!

AUGUST 2017

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. During the last week in June, my son Johnathan came and took us to his house in Taverham, Norfolk where, together with his wife Tracy, they had created a superb garden that contained not only shrubs, perennials and bedding plants, but also container grown cherries (which we picked and ate the next day), also apple trees that had all been grafted onto dwarf rooting stocks. There was a huge giant willow herb, see picture left, growing in a small border, so I went to pull it out saying it was a weed. “No” said Tracy, that is an Echium that I purchased recently, there was no sign of an Echium, but only a label saying it should be. The next day we visited the garden centre where she had purchased this so-called Echium and it was then I could see why she had been mistaken as a great many of the perennials had died and weeds were growing in their place. This taught Tracy a lesson that the label in the pot does not mean that it is necessarily the right plant, but just a pot of weeds. The following day we visited the Urban Jungle at Old Costessy, Norfolk. We always like to visit this nursery as it has a sub-tropical showground and stocks so many unusual plants, some being on the tender side. I still finished purchasing

Ugni molinae ‘Butterball’ that has small light green leaves and small almost round white flowers, I also purchased the variegated form ‘Flambeau’ whose leaves are variegated with yellow. Both originate from sub-tropical Chile and I shall have to keep them pot grown to enable me to put them in my greenhouse during the winter months. One other evergreen shrub that immediately drew my eye was Mitraria coccinea ‘Clarkes Form’ whose bright orange flowers said ‘buy me’, so I did. This is also a slightly tender shrub from Chile and needs planting where it gets protection from hard frosts and cold winds, so I planted it in well prepared soil close to my South facing fence where a large Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ will not only help to give it protection from cold winds, but also ‘Sundance’s’ golden leaves would contrast greatly with the Mitraria orange flowers. Vi loves Alstroemeria’s, so we finished up purchasing a plant of ‘Princess Diana’, shown below, whose yellow petals where splashed with light

brown and striped with black, also ‘Princess Elaine’, shown below, with rosy-red striped brown flowers. Both were planted in with the existing Alstroemeria’s, which meant moving five clumps of polyanthus, my soil six inches (15cm) down was as dry as snuff, so after digging out large planting holes I then had to fill the holes with water and let this soak in before working plenty of garden compost into the soil prior to planting. I sometimes mention ornamental plants which resemble our native socalled weeds. This month it is Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’ a lax ornamental shrub that is a relation of the woody nightshade, which is often seen growing in hedgerows. I saw ‘Glasnevin’ growing against an archway in my son’s garden and it looked outstanding massed with light blue flowers. This is not a natural climber, but a lax shrub that is best grown trained and tied out on a trellis, or against an archway. During June my container grown ‘St George’ runner beans had their leaves shredded by strong winds and the consequent hot weather caused the leaf edges to turn brown, but the three plants of ‘St George’ which I gave to my son Johnathan and which I saw growing in his allotment at Taverham had no leaf damage and as a consequence had six inch (15cm) beans on them. Having fed my beans twice with liquid seaweed fertiliser during early July, a new lot of leaves appeared and now I can say that we are once more picking our own beans.

This was the first time the school had held a summer fete for many years and with the weather being so beautiful, the families turned out and enjoyed the afternoon in good numbers. The Dance academy and cheerleaders performed from preschool age up to teens, with lots of appreciation from the audience. There was a prize every time tombola, luck bag stall, guess the teacher, treasure map, ring toss and other interesting stalls. The total raised for the school was £2,145.80. A huge thank you goes out to all the teachers, staff and parents who helped organise and run the stalls along with some of the older children on the day. This month, in conjunction with the body store, we are looking at herbal remedies to assist women through the menopause. This natural process is a normal part of a woman’s life and one that women all go through, but maybe something that is not always talked about openly. Some women go through the Menopause earlier than others and all have different experiences of it, some good, some not so good. Eileen Durwood, A. Vogel's expert on the subject has produced a simple guide to the three stages of the menopause; the peri-menopause, Menopause and life beyond the Menopause. The body store are offering this book, worth £3.99, free with any two A.Vogel Menopause products as shown in our picture below left, while stocks last. Mrs S. Franklin, President, welcomed members to the institute's July meeting. During business matters, Mrs A. Wright spoke of being a delegate at the National Federation of Women’s Institute (NFWI) A.G.M in June held in Manchester. Also, she and fellow member, Mrs M. Sewell, had attended a course at Denman College for Willow Weaving. The results, apart from very torn skin on fingers, were astonishing - a deer, pig, bulrush and dragonfly, all made from the willow, plus patterns to make further items at leisure. Speaker for the evening was Mrs Sue Fraser, originally a volunteer, but now an employee with a job-share at the ‘Museum of Childhood' at Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire, now part of the National Trust. Members were reminded of their childhood memories, as Mrs Fraser gave a PowerPoint presentation of the museum. Built in 1660, It had previously been a private residence. Well what a night that was!! On a glorious sunny evening in July we held our Summer outing at Roots in Barkby. Some twenty-plus ladies visited the alpacas and then had a supper of glorious food. Meats, pies, salads, pickles, slaws all homemade, wonderful and varied types of crusty bread and followed by a sumptuous dessert of either chocolate or lemon tart with of course the ubiquitous cream!! How to follow that, well we did with entertainment by Dougie Wright,

transformed into one of the foremost museums of childhood artefacts in the country. What was once a squash court has now become a games room. They have many thousands of exhibits, not every item can be displayed so some still have to be stored away. Her job involves cataloguing, conservation, repair work, laundering, plus being a tour guide, which all adds up to being a very worthwhile and rewarding occupation. Mrs J. Brutnall gave the vote of thanks, remembering when she received a post office set and a cardboard sweatshop as childhood presents. The competition winner was Mrs J. Oliver with a teddy bear and the raffle was won by Mrs V. Cobb. The refreshments were served by Mrs V. Cobb and Mrs B. Storer assisted by several other members. The August meeting will be on Wednesday 2nd at 7.30pm in the Syston Community Centre, with a speaker talking about The work of the Bradgate Park Trust. Visitors always welcome.

Syston Town News Syston’s Only Dedicated Newspaper former drummer with the John Barry Seven (he who created the James Bond theme), who gave us insight into his full and varied life from the sixties, backing the stars, right up to his time teaching at the Leicester School of Music and all interspersed with snippets of music from the era and a singalong by the members. Finally, four lucky ladies found an envelope stuck under their chair seat and were presented with wine, chocolates or a plant. Back in the Village hall on the 2nd August, come and see what we’re up to you’ll get a warm welcome.

Out and About with Your Pet Summer is now safely here and we hope you and your furry friends are enjoying the sunshine as much as we are here at Park Vet Group! Our #petsummerwellness campaign is continuing with great success – if you haven’t signed up for our newsletter and Summer Pet emails then be sure to go to www.parkvetgroup.com for all the best tips and tricks to keep your pet happy and healthy this season. Summer is a great time for holidays and outings with our pets, but it’s also an easy way for them to get into all sorts of sticky situations! Hot weather, endless barbeques and pesky bugs can all be a danger to our pets if we don’t take some precautions. We thought we’d share with you a few handy hints to make sure your pet enjoys the summer as much as you do! 1. Keep hydrated! Just like us, our pets need extra drinks in the hot weather. Make sure to take bottled water with you on walks and car journeys, and offer it regularly to your pet.

2. Don’t leave pets in cars! Even when it’s just 22 degrees outside, a car can warm to 47 degrees within an hour. Our pets can’t sweat like us (a blessing and a curse!) so find it so much harder to keep cool. Unfortunately leaving windows open just isn’t enough.

Last but not least, all the horrible ticks and fleas we’ve mentioned before will continue to cause bother for the whole of summer. We are still offering our FREE Creepy Crawlies Checks throughout August, so please do bring your pet to see one of our nurses for a bug spotcheck. Park Vet Group Scraptoft is a welcoming team of vets and nurses dedicated to the best care of your pets. Find us at 151 Scraptoft Lane, or follow us on Facebook for #petwellness updates straight to your timeline!

3. Watch out for scavengers! Barbeque bits such as bones, cornon-the-cobs and fatty foods can all cause serious tummy upsets and blockages. Save you and your pet an emergency trip to us by keeping a beady eye on pets that like to steal food. 4. Check the pavement first! Tarmac gets extremely hot and can easily burn your pet’s paws. If you can’t happily keep your hand firmly on the ground for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for walkies (sorry Buster!).

Other roses clambered up rustic archways. There are two ponds, one small set within a slabbed seating area mid-way down the garden, the other large and ornamental, with water lilies; marginal plants; and a Gunnera, its massive leaves similar in appearance to rhubarb. Editor’s report on the

Syston Has a New Full Town Council Meetings held on Tuesday 27th June 2017 Public Health Local There were 16 Councillors (Cllrs), one available throughout the summer holiday, Area Coordinator

County Councillor (C.Cllr) and one member of the public present. The Reflection was read by the Chairman Cllr P. Henry and apologies were received from C.Cllr J. Poland and Cllrs K. Asmal and S. Visavadia. The were no declarations of interest and no matters arising from the public. The Chairman made two announcements, the first was in relation to the death of former Cllr Toby Griffiths and a minutes silence was observed in his memory and those who lost their lives in the recent events in London. The other was to announce that Cllr Pat Wright had resigned. There were no Police present to give their report, see pages 6 & 7 in this paper for an up-to-date report from the police. The County/Borough Councillor's Report began with C.Cllr D. Slater, who spoke about the dept of environment and how blocked gullies are to be assessed more efficiently. He explained that Leicestershire CC had categorised the 130,000 gullies into high, medium and low for cleaning and maintenance - If listed as high these will get cleaned more frequently, this new system will commence from this Autumn. He said that they are working on a sensor to be placed in each of the drains to monitor them and automatically alert when they need cleaning before it gets to the overflow stage. Cllr E. Vardy spoke about the investment the borough made last year and that they are working on an business engagement strategy between local government and businesses. It includes Syston Enterprise Park and to promote tourism in the area. He referred to a plan that will be publicised to Cllr members in the following week. How Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) will provide services to businesses, and the ways they can do that. See CBC website for full details! It is hoped that this will bring jobs and increase in the economy to Syston. Cllr T. Barkley spoke about the review of Town Council wards and boundaries and said there were to be no changes at this time. CBC had carried out a fire safety check on social housing following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in London and had issued a statement reassuring residents, although CBC has no high rise building in the borough. Armed forces day had been well supported in June. Charnwood Sports Awards had been announced and nominations are due by Friday 15th September with the ceremony being held on Monday 4th December. He spoke about the garden bin subscription, see article in the July issue of Stn. Finally, holiday activities 28

Full details can be foun on CBC website: www.charnwood.gov.yk/holidayprogram mes. Cllr K. Pacey spoke about the Highways forum which was set up to discuss problems and get feedback from CBC. He concluded by saying that CBC had passed the Licensing guidelines and they now are up-to-date with the national ones. All Minutes were passed after amendments to Development and General Purposes. Standing Order Review The Cllrs then discussed and debated issues relating to membership of committees for some considerable time. It was agreed to remove the restriction on panels and committees so that members could sit on as many committees as they chose. After the resignation of Councillor P. Wright a notice was needed to advertise the vacancy, this was agreed. Cllr E. Vardy explained about a Partnership Panel and the restarting of it in principle following a paper from CBC. He said he would bring this item to the July meeting. There is a Biffa Liaison Committee which meets annually. It is made up of a town Cllr, C.Cllr and local residents. They are looking for another member and Cllr M. Carnal suggested that Pat Wright be invited to attend as a resident. The H. A. Taylor Trust still has a Nominative Trustee Vacancy, as yet no Cllr that is not already a trustee with the charity has shown an interest in this role. The Date of Civic Reception was announced as Friday 20th April 2018 and the Chairman had not decided upon his Charity at the time of the meeting. There was a LCC Annual Parishes Liaison Event due to take place on Monday 10th July 2017, details were circulated and names of any who wish to attend were to be given to the office. The Town Manager's Report was tabled and there were no Members' Questions received to the Chairman. Cllr K. Pacey, asked about the roundabout, the Chairman asked for this to be put on the next Development committee agenda. The next meeting was to be held on Tuesday 25th July at 7.30pm.

Local Area coordination is a preventative initiative that started in Leicestershire in July 2015. The initiative helps people and communities to achieve their vision of a good life. It also helps prevent people from reaching and returning to a crisis. A Local Area Coordinator looks for opportunities and natural connections within communities that enable people and places to grow. The support offered is person centred and non-time restricted.

We work with local and country wide organisations and services to promote opportunities for people who may be at risk (vulnerable) or trying to cope with daily life due to their age, disability or low level mental health. A Local Area Coordinator can provide short term support, providing information or signposting longer term support whereby they will take time to understand a person’s strengths and aspirations, help to set targets and provide practical ways of achieving goals and visions for a good life. If you would like more information, know of someone who would like to be introduced or to meet your new Local Area Coordinator Michelle McWeeney then please call 0773 058 2765 or alternatively email michelle.mcweeney@leics.gov.uk There will also be drop-in sessions at the hub café on High St on Fridays between 2.00 and 3.00pm. Michelle will be based at Syston Library but please call before visiting to avoid disappointment.

Fiona Henry, Editor. For the official minutes of this and other Town Council Meetings please visit their website: www.systontc.org. You can attend any council meeting held on Tuesday evenings 7.30pm. Details are posted across all town council notice boards. www.systontownnews.co.uk
