Official Opening of 3G Pitch Football Club players Matt Elliott and Dion Dublin and Filbert Fox the clubs mascot. It was a very hot day and the photographs show the two groups of students who had the pleasure of being coached, if only for a short time by Matt Elliott, on this state of the art all weather ground. It has transformed the previous hard surface pitch into a 21st century facility with two local clubs; Syston Juniors FC and Riverside FC, being able to use the pitch for both training and playing their regular matches. The principal Mr Tony Pinnock said “It compliments the school visually and is being used by all years. As well as improving students sporting abilities it is also helping to improve their academic achievemen ts. With two local football teams using it, it is a great asset to the community as well.”
On Tuesday 6th September, the Stn along with other invited guests joined Wreake Valley Academy principal; Mr Tony Pinnock, staff and governors. The special guests were former Leicester City

Letters in Support of the Ground Staff Following the publication of the letter from the ground staff in last months Stn, we have received too many responses to include in this issue. However, with the permission from the authors of the letters, we have passed them onto the Syston Town Council office so that the Councillors can see just how much the residents appreciate the hard work the ground staff do to maintain the parks, flower beds, hanging baskets and cemetery in
the town. We would like to thank all those who took the time to write in to us and we are sure the ground staff appreciate your support. We will report on the outcome in a future issue.
The Syston Day Nursery Update
Happy Halloween 31st October Remember to Stay Safe and Respect those who do not want to participate in Trick or Treat.
The Syston Day Nursery have had a very busy and productive last six months since it was taken over from Leicester Montessori. The nursery is going from strength-to-strength under new ownership and management having undergone an extensive refurbishment plan which has included decorating, purchasing new furniture and equipment for all classrooms, new flooring throughout the nursery, upgrading the nursery security with CCTV, upgrading the fire system and having new windows fitted. Future plans include extending the ICT equipment for the children and refurbishing the children’s bathrooms. The outdoor play area is currently being developed to provide the children with further opportunities to use natural materials. The children have recently been using their imagination and physical skills whilst den making. For further information please call Lisa Newcombe on 0116 260 7933.
A Note from The Editorial Team Welcome to the October issue, celebrating 20 years! We hope you have all enjoyed the lovely summer. We have two corrections relating to last months issue. The photograph shown in the Syston in Bloom article was labelled incorrectly, it should have stated ‘a garden in The Stiles’. Unfortunately, we were sent the wrong photograph. The second one was an annual beer festival mentioned in Declan’s Diary, this should have read Syston Social Club’s Annual Beer Festival. 2

own cycle shop, Paul and Yvonne, pictured above, have made that difficult decision, when you own your own business, to retire. They were hoping to sell it on as a going concern, but that has not been possible, so this much loved shop will close at the end of October. Paul and Yvonne are keen cyclists themselves and Paul has always maintained their own bicycles. When their son Scott got interested in mountain bike racing, they took the chance to open their own cycle shop selling new cycles and accessories but also providing a repair service. They thought they would keep it for about 10 years at that time. However, that has turned into 16 years! During that time they have been open six days a week, which doesn’t leave much time for themselves. They have enjoyed running the business but feel that it is now time to spend time with family and enjoy free time to enjoy what they choose to do. Paul and Yvonne would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all their customers.

Our picture shows L-R: Amy, Mark, Michelle and Ian.
Michelle Harris of L R Harris & Son, Meadow Lane, Syston – the business owned by her husband, Ian, and son, Mark, has decided to purchase a defibrillator machine in memory of Michelle's mum; Jean Grant, a long time Syston resident who passed away in November 2014. Jean and her late husband Mick, pictured left, had supported the RNLI when they were younger and Jean was always both proud and pleased to hear of the other defibrillators coming to the town as it was a way to help people and possibly save a life. With this thought in mind, Michelle decided to honour Jean’s memory by having one installed at the family run boatyard.
It will be there if needed by anyone, but will be of special benefit to walkers, cyclists, runners or boaters as it is alongside the canal/river and close to Watermead Park - other machines are more central to the town. If anyone calls 999 and the patient is displaying signs of a heart attack, the emergency service will check their location and pass on the code to enter to obtain the defibrillator from the cabinet. The machine itself is automatic and will provide the necessary treatment once the electrodes are attached correctly to the individual. Whilst it is hoped that the machine is not needed often, it is nice for all of Jean’s family (five daughters and one son, grandchildren and great grandchildren) to know that she has gone on to help her beloved town.

Wreake Valley Academy Celebration Evening 2016
The evening of Thursday 8th September saw Wreake Valley Academy and Wreake Valley Sixth Form celebrate the successes of their students from Year 11 and 13. Many of these students have achieved top grades in all of their subjects and others have made incredible progress in the courses they have studied. The occasion was attended by students, their families, staff, governors, the family of Oliver Taylor and Councillor Paul Henry, Chair of the Syston Town Council.
During the evening there were formal awards for achievement along with individual subjects awards, prize giving for the Victor and Victrix Ludorum and the Janet Littlefield Award for outstanding contribution to the Visual and Performing Arts. The climax of the evening saw citations for students nominated for the Oliver Taylor Award being read before the award was made to Tereal Emmanuel, see piture below, presented by Cllr Paul Henry. The award is made each year to the most outstanding Year 11 student. Mr Pinnock, Principal of Wreake Valley Academy, spoke of how proud he was of all of the students and their achievements, a testament to their hard work. Many of the Year 11 pupils
have been welcomed back into the Wreake Valley Sixth Form to study A Levels; Year 13 students are embarking on degree courses at university. We wish them all the best of luck in their chosen pathway.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Ladies Friendship Circle On Monday 12th September, Cynthia Tooth opened the first meeting of our new session with a prayer and welcome to old and new members. This was an open meeting where the future programme was discussed. The main topic was this year's charity, which will be the Leicester Children's Home, Mablethorpe. Our first event for this charity will be a coffee morning on Saturday 29th October from 10.00am til 12noon in the church hall, where we will have some stalls and a raffle. We finished with our usual tea, coffee and biscuits. It was good to be back together after the summer break. Sheila Borderick Eleven30 Eleven30 families were back in September after the summer break following the theme of Journeying as we begin another new year of services. If you have children up to and including Year 6 why not join us
on 1st and 3rd Sunday's at 11.30am. You and your children will be very welcome. The first Sunday in October is Harvest Festival and that will start at 10.30am a combined service with the 10.00am congregation. Everyone very welcome and lots to take part in for children. Skittles evening Several members of the congregation took the opportunity of a social evening at the skittles alley in the Blue Bell Inn at Hoby.
It was decided that the teams would be the ladies against the men! A good deal of laughter ensued from the alley as some people managed to score magnificently while others were rather
more abysmal! By a narrow margin the ladies were triumphant! The piping hot supper arrived midsession and was enjoyed by all. It was a thoroughly enjoyable time and many asked that it be repeated so that the men could gain their revenge! Ride and Stride 10th September There could hardly have been a worse day for this event as it poured with rain pretty much all day. Despite this, Terry Farmer and his friend Mick Streetley bravely faced the elements and managed to cycle around many of the local churches, understandably visiting about half their usual number. Despite this, all the money has yet to be collected, they hope to have raised about £200, half of which goes to the Leicestershire historic Churches Trust and half to our own church. OCTOBER 2016
LED Lighting County Councillor D. Houseman was unable to attend the last full council meeting but sent me the following information for you our our readers information. Work continues to upgrade more than 68,000 street lights across Leicestershire to LEDs in order to make substantial savings in energy, carbon and maintenance costs. The programme, which has so far resulted in more than 10,000 replacements, should be completed by March 2019. The programme is currently concentrating on low level street lights in residential areas. Work to replace taller columns, such as those at junctions, is set to start in August. Along with introducing money-saving technology, the rollout will also see all lights controlled centrally – allowing for them to be switched back on in areas of part-night lighting for example, should the emergency services be called to an incident. When the lights are first installed they will burn all night at 100% brightness until they pick up their dimming programme, usually within a couple of days. The lights then dim to 70% brightness and any part-night lights will switch off at midnight until 5.30am as they currently do. Evidence collated to-date shows that 97.6% of part-night lighting has no detrimental effect on crime or road traffic
Holistic Wellness Studio Massage Reflexology Reiki Hopi Ear candles Meditation Classes Holistic Facials Waxing & Threading
collisions. The exception to this is found to be for ‘Constrained City Dwellers’ who experienced an increase in crime through the introduction of part-night lighting. Overall this group accounts for 2.4% of the Leicestershire population. As a result of these findings, further study work is proposed on the feasibility of converting some lights back to all night operation and using the dimming capability of the LED’s and the Central Management System, in the areas most affected. In fact for 97% of the County’s population, crime decreased more in part-lit areas than it did in areas where there was no change to street lighting. Frequently Ask Questions (FAQs) Health Issue? Some research has suggested that blue light can disrupt sleep through suppression of the hormone melatonin. LED street lights do contain more blue light than traditional street lights, but are classed as 'risk group one' which means that no specific precautions need to be taken. The use of televisions, phones, tablets and computers are likely to have a much greater impact on melatonin levels in the body than street lights. Both natural and artificial light has the potential to damage the eye. It's best to avoid looking at any light source directly for any length of time. Part-night do we still need to do it? Part-night lighting currently delivers around £900k of savings (carbon tax and energy) and the project paid for itself in November 2014. LED’s are predicted to save around 50% in energy therefore the part-night lighting will still contribute roughly £450k in savings. The light outside my house is too bright or doesn’t go out anymore and I can’t sleep? When the lights are installed, on the first night they may burn at 100%
brightness. Within 2-3 working days the light will register with the Central Management System and pick up the partnight programming as well as any dimming profiles allocated to it, in the meantime please bear with us. Further dimming options may be available and part-night lighting will continue to operate for the foreseeable future. Expected savings? Initial estimates predict savings of over £1m per annum. I don’t like the white light! The old sodium lights have a colour temperature of between 1700K and 2700K and aren’t very good at colour rendering, that is to say for example you can’t tell what colour a car is. The higher the colour temperature the better the visibility, colour rendering and lower running costs, however, this has to be balanced with the appearance. Higher colour temperature is bluer in colour and less aesthetically appealing. Leicestershire’s LED street lights operate at 4000K and this is very close to natural moonlight in terms of colour. How long will the project take? Four year programme accelerated to three years. Everywhere else has been done but the light outside my house hasn’t been changed to LED? High level (>6m) lanterns will be changed eventually. Some lights belong to parish or district councils and as such LCC will not be changing them unless an order is received from the parish/district council. Other lights may be deemed to have unsafe brackets and a replacement column may be required. What’s happening to the old lanterns? Anything two years and below will be re-used on daily reported faults where we
won’t be fitting an LED in the next five weeks. All others will be taken away for re-cycling at no cost to the council. County Cllr D Houseman.

U3A Invites Everyone to a Birthday Celebration
Since our launch, we have been forcefully struck by the many wholly positive comments and thanks that we have received from our members. Well, in all the years we have had a stand at the Carnival, this year has to be the wettest on record! I think we are just about dried out! After such a lovely summer, the heavens opened and drenched everyone who had spent the morning setting up their stalls in anticipation of the usual busy and fun-filled afternoon. There were some hardy souls who came and supported the charity stalls and we managed to get some photographs of some of them. The Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood walked around the event before judging the fancy dress in the Carnival marquee, see picture middle above. We pictured Local MP Edward Argar at the Syston and District Volunteer Centre Stall, with Caroline and Mark. The Scout Band retreated to the Carnival Marquee to perform, which was enjoyed by those who watched, see far right. The Sabre display team were not deterred by the weather and continued to fight their way across the arena, see above near right. Then at about 2.30pm, the rain eased off just in time for Queniborough Dance Company (QDC) to bring some sunshine to the arena in the form of their tots and junior spacemen to entertain the small crowd, picture right. Our Wordsearch winners were presented with their prizes by Tesco Store Manager, James and Community Champion, Zoe. The winning shop window prizes were presented in the week following the event and our photographs right show the winning shop; The Secret Garden and the Space theme window, with The Village Bakery, second and TESCO, third. A huge thank you to everyone who did turn out and support the event. It takes all year to organise and for most of our local charities it is their main fundraising event. Thanks to the Carnival Committee for all their hard work. We sincerely hope that next year will be a dry and hopefully sunny day! 18 SYSTON TOWN NEWS

Local History Group Exhibition
On Monday 19th September the Syston Town News was invited to capture the new intake of Buzzy Bees and Ladybird classes. Although the weather outside was not very nice, there was a warm welcome from the children and teachers. Our photographs here show the two classes: Mrs Satterthwaite’s Ladybirds, top and below Ms Eastman’s, Buzzy Bees in the foyer of the Foundation/Yr1 building. The children in both classes were very well behaved and it was a pleasure to visit them. Well done and thank you for being so good. Parents wishing to obtain a copy can contact us here at the Stn on 0116 269 3221 or through the school.
On Saturday 17th September the Annual exhibition took place with a slight difference. Along with all the fascinating boards showing Syston through the centuries from village to Town.
Our pictures show: Mrs Satterthwaite’s Ladybirds above and Ms Eastman’s Buzzy Bees below. Our picture shows L-R Edward Argar, Ray Young, Felicity Austin, Uniform of the late Dot Wilkes, Cynthia Brown each holding a copy of the book.
The group took this opportunity to launch their new book - Syston in World War 2 and local MP Edward Argar was invited to mark the occasion with a short speech. Edward, who lives in Syston, revealed in his speech that he is a history graduate and so was very pleased to be invited to launch this book which records a different view of the second world war. The authors, Felicity Austin and Cynthia Brown (historian) had interviewed residents who had either served during the war, worked as land girls or were children at the time. Our picture shows Edward receiving a copy of the book from Mary Gamble, who is featured in it along with Dot Wilkes whose uniform was on display. As most of OCTOBER 2016
our readers will know, Dot passed away earlier this year, so it was in her honour that her uniform was on display. This is a very interesting read, with contributions and pictures provided by residents and families of those featured. It is an invaluable record of Syston at the time of WW2. Congratulations to all involved in creating this record for future generations. If you would like to buy a copy, they are available in several shops in Syston, including Peberdy's Newsagents, Jennings, the Card shop,
and Gamble and Hollis. The Town Council Offices have also agreed to have copies of this historically important book on sale, as has the Thurmaston Print Shop.

Syston Police Unit News Beat Surgery Saturday 15th October 1.00 to 2.00pm at Co-op, Syston. I am also holding ‘Coffee with a Cop’ at The Hub Café, Methodist Church, High Street on Monday 17th October at 11.00am. Please pop along for a chat. Events I shall be attending the school fete of Queniborough primary on Saturday 8th October 11.00am onwards. Please pop along with your children to see the police car, I shall also have colouring sheets for them. Crime Prevention Advice Please be aware of scam letters. There are various ones currently going around. One has been regarding being entitled to a large sum of money as you have the same surname as a recently deceased person. Do not make contact or reply to this. Another has been a handwritten note stating you have an admirer and asking to meet up on a particular date and time. We believe this maybe a ploy to get people out of their homes with the
intent to then break in. Do not meet up and be vigilant to anyone acting suspicious in the area. Call 101 if you receive such a note. Also be cautious of anyone asking you for money for what may seem a genuine reason such as ran out of petrol. There is a male and female approaching people for money and then stealing from wallets/purses. Theft from vehicles is still a force priority. Many victims have mistakenly left their vehicle insecure. I have been conducting some checks ensuring vehicles are locked. I went along Lindisfarne Road one evening and found six insecure vehicles, owners were advised. Another evening I visited Mallard Drive, Kestrel Close and Heron Way finding three vehicles insecure, again owners were advised. I shall do further checks around the town. Please ensure you check your vehicle is locked properly and do not leave any valuables inside. Beat Team There has been various changes to the beat team so I thought would update you on its members: Sergeant Min Legaye 4130 PC Ian Perry 1928 PC Jordan Robson 2966
PC Peter Stacey 4106 PC Nath Lockley 2062 PCSO Brian Geeson 6507 PCSO Harkaret Sanghera 6164 And myself of course. Halloween and Bonfire Night Leicestershire police and partner agencies are cracking down on anti social behaviour over Halloween and bonfire night. We are asking stores to help in this campaign by not selling flour or eggs to under 18’s, unless accompanied by an adult. We would also like to remind trick or treaters to be respectful of properties and residents that they visit and not to call on homes displaying a poster saying no thanks to trick or treaters. We want the community to have fun on Halloween and bonfire night but also to ensure that they and their children do not get involved in egg throwing or misuse of fireworks. display saying either welcome or no thanks to trick or treaters, this can be found on Charnwood Borough council website or you can pick one up from the following places in Syston: Community Centre, Tesco, Co op, Library, The Hub Café. Navratri and Diwali To help ensure your celebrations are memorable for all the right reasons, please consider the following safety advise: Be discreet with your valuables/ money and when wearing jewellery ensure it is not on show, for example wear a scarf to cover a necklace. Asian gold thefts increase this time of year. Keep items in safety deposit boxes in banks rather than at home. Also photograph precious and sentimental pieces and register them on www.immobolise.com. Be aware of what is happening around you and trust your instincts – if you feel unsafe change your direction and go where you feel safer and are more visible to other people. When you go out, make sure you lock your doors and windows – even if you are going out for a short time. Consider using a timer switch for lights or a radio if you go out in the evening or overnight or leave a light
on. Do not leave your home in darkness, if it looks like there is no one at home a burglar will assume this also. If you see anybody in your neighbourhood acting suspiciously call the Police on 101. Always report all incidents to the police. I shall be conducting leaflet drops in the targeted areas for Burglary and Asian gold thefts and visiting residents to personally discuss the above crime prevention advise and any concerns you may have. Good News Two local youths have been charged with burglary other than dwelling for a break-in at a local store in Syston. A local youth has been charged with public order and criminal damage for smoke flares being let off in local stores. If you are affected by any anti social behaviour please report this on 101 or to your local council. The police have powers to deal with anyone causing alarm, harassment or distress. The Gables Day Nursery
We have covered books including Handa’s Surprise, The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Jack and The Beanstalk. The children have been cooking, tasting and learning about where the different foods come from and how they grow. We also had a visit from Tesco’s to talk about Healthy Eating with the children. It has been a great success. We hope all our school leavers have had a great start to their first term as they start school at Merton, St Peter and St Paul's, Bishop Ellis and those further afield. For information on sessions, including the various funded only sessions please call us on 0116 260 7272.
The Great Little Paper! We have had an exciting start to the new term at Gables Day Nursery as the children have been taking part in the National Children’s Food Festival in all of their rooms. Each room chose a book to focus on and the children have been learning and exploring the different foods in them.

SYSTON TOWN NEWS 31
Edward Argar MP It was good to see so many people braving the heavy rain a few weeks ago to go along to the popular annual event that is the Syston Carnival. Although the rain may have dampened Central Park, it certainly didn't appear to dampen anyone's spirits and determination to have a good time, and I, like many others I'm sure, thoroughly enjoyed the event and wanted to congratulate the organisers for keeping the show on the road despite the weather! I also recently had the opportunity to visit the Syston Volunteer Centre in School Street to meet Mark and the team, and to hear more about the Centre's work and its future projects. The work the centre, and it's team of dedicated volunteers do to offer a wide range of volunteer transport services geared towards those who are disabled, elderly or rurally isolated is a lifeline for many local people in Syston and the wider area and is hugely valuable. In addition SVC runs minibus trips to local parts, pubs and attractions, and runs a hire scheme for wheelchairs, walkers etc. Quite rightly the SVC is a real jewel in Syston's crown, both it and it's amazing team of volunteers deserve our continued local support. It was also good to hear about the Centre's exciting plans to develop a new public open space in Syston, which I look forward to supporting them with, and which I hope will attract strong local support in the town. Finally, and on a more sombre note, I also had the privilege of visiting Birstall Fire Station and Leicestershire Fire and rescue Service HQ last month to talk about the Service's work
in Charnwood, issues affecting it, and to be given a truly impressive demonstration by the Birstall crew of firefighting and of the crew's medical first-response work. My visit, however, came on a very sad day for our Fire and Rescue Service following the sudden death on duty earlier that week of firefighter Paul Wilkens based at Castle Donnington in NW Leicestershire. Last week, along with other County MPs and the Leader of the County Council, I attended Mr Wilken's Fire Service funeral in Loughborough. On both occasions, despite their obvious sadness at the loss of a friend and a member of the Fire Service 'Family', as always the firefighters did their Service and our County proud. The very moving service, plus my visit and the demonstration, were very powerful reminders of how proud we should be of our Fire and Rescue Service, and what a first rate job our County's firefighters do day-in, dayout, putting themselves in harms way and frequently in danger, to keep us safe and to be there when we need them. They are people who, when we would run away from danger, they run towards it to tackle it. As a community we are incredibly grateful to them all for all they do for us. I wanted to use this opportunity to thank our County's firefighters and to extend my condolences and those of Syston and our whole community to Mr Wilken's family, friends, and colleagues.

On Friday 19th August, the Fosseway Bowls Club played staff from the Leicester Royal Infirmary ‘Hope For
Syston Rugby Football Club. The trials were well attended with approximately 80 players from all over the county trialling. Syston resident and Roundhill Academy year 11 pupil, Eleanor Wilkinson, pictured right, was also at the u18 trials, in which she was successful in being selected for the Leicestershire County squad. The girls will now embark on an intensive training program before they play a series of fixtures against Staffordshire,
Cancer Clinic’, see our picture left, which was organised by Fosseway members Robert and Margaret Bland. The game ended in a Draw! A fair result for a really fun game. The players then had a supper cooked by Fosseway’s catering ladies who gave their time for free. Sales of wristbands, raffle prizes and donations raised £638 for the LRI Cancer ward. The club presented a cheque to the representatives on the Clubs competition finals day that was held on Sunday 18th September, see picture
