WHAT A CHEMISTRY... THE MEN THAT MATTER, AND THEIR ‘INTERESTING’ RELATIONSHIP!

KARTIKEY DEV SINGH

ITwas a visual that is seldom seen. Prime Minister Narendra Modi alighted from the Air Force helicopter at Nathdwara on Wednesday and was received by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at the helipad. To the surprise of those present, it was a ‘coincidence’ that the duo had donned almost similar clothes, white kurta and off-white Nehru/Modi jacket. The individuals, one — a premier of a Nation and the other — a premier of a State, met with extreme warm heartedness and compassion. While the duo are custodians and proponents of two separate political ideologies, which has long been at the opposite ends of the spectrum; yet there appeared no love lost between the two political bigwigs.

Their journey so far has been almost similar. Both have been influenced by ideas of service from an early age, both started giving their time to the idea in their teens, both of them struggled for that idea and through that struggle, rose to the political heights in their respective parties.

They followed the same line, yet the relationship between Modi and Gehlot is an inexplicable puzzle! On the one hand, there is a friendship on a personal level between the two. When Modi reached Nathdwara helipad on Wednesday, Gehlot warmly welcomed Modi. Coincidentally, the dressing sense of both was also almost identical and after this, from the stage in Nathdwara, Modi called Gehlot, his friend. In fact, in the past, Modi has termed Gehlot as the senior-most Chief Minister, while also showering many accolades on the Congress leader from time to time.

And this was visible by CM Gehlot’s gesture of receiving PM Modi at Nathdwara, an act, not many Opposition CMs adhere to, and yet CM Gehlot, displaying a sense of propriety, went ahead and received PM Modi. In turn, the PM too acknowledged Gehlot’ gesture and was all smiles and visibly happy on seeing his counterpart!

This ‘respect and honour’ that both the leaders have for each other, was visible during Gehlot’s address at Nathdwara as well. In fact, the duo even cracked light jokes among themselves, half a dozen times, while seated on the stage. When the CM stood up for his address, then the slogan of Modi-Modi echoed among the common people. In such a situation, PM Modi himself pacified the people by pointing from the stage. Along with this, he also indicated BJP State president CP Joshi to stop the people from raising slogans.

But on the other hand, both the leaders did not hesitate to surround and taunt each other’s party. Gehlot took sarcastic jibes from the stage in front of Modi and said that ‘whoever may be in the government, but the Opposition should be respected. We used to compete with Gujarat in development, now Rajasthan is far ahead of Gujarat’.

Meanwhile, PM Modi too targeted the Congress rule and said that ‘Some people don’t want to see good happening in the country, they only like to create controversy’. And after this statement of Modi, Gehlot tweeted his reaction and said that PM should have avoided giving political statement in his (Gehlot’s) presence in the government program.

Everything said and done, the ‘relationship’ between Modi and Gehlot is akin to that of mature individuals where even though they call out each other before the public, yet there is a deep admiration between two for each other.

IS ARMY LOSING ITS GRIP IN PAKISTAN?

This deadlock gets worse when citizens expect more from the army be as it may of its role and constraints.

I recall meeting a prominent personality during my service who said that he was happy with civilian rule but, should something go wrong, he would hold the army responsible.

“Damned if you don’t and Damned if you do” is the story now

Narendra Modi @narendramodi

Our controversial neighbour Pakistan came in to being in a hurry and did not have enough time to scrutinize the fact that a strong and imbalanced army is a threat to the development of the nation as a democratic setup. The failing health of Mr Jinnah did not provide him with sufficient time to raise the required civil institutions that could control the army.

Army in Pakistan is ‘SEC-

OND TO NONE’ in the hierarchy of power game and has used its rivalry with India to validate its control of total power and to place itself above all admonishments. Even though it never won any of the four wars against India, it managed to wage a successful war against its own democratic system and ruling Pakistan directly for over 30 years and influencing the corridors of political power for rest of the other period since its independence. Yes, the Generals run the country from behind the façade of civilian govt face.

In fact, last three Chiefs of Army Staff, Generals Kayani, Gen Raheel and Gen Bajwa all decided not to be the face to take direct control of the government. As the Army had gained de facto control over nation’s nuclear and missile programs

Glad to have met Foreign Minister of Israel @elicoh1. We discussed ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation in priority areas of agriculture, water, innovation and people-to-people ties.

in addition to a direct say in matters of country’s key foreign relationships, military budget, and national security decisionmaking, Marshal law was not considered necessary. To be honest, in my opinion, military had achieved “coup-less coup.”

For the first time, civil-military relationship seemed to come off its turbulent past by agreeing on the major issues facing Pakistan i.e.; India, national politics and the economy. The reasons for hesitancy in taking over the reins of Pakistan has not been very clear. Was it because of the taming of the Generals in last two decades by civil masters or, the instable and falling economy variable?

Though, many onlookers world over are pondering on the possible military takeover to each challenge Pakistan faces today, we have to realise that this compulsive speculation is based upon a deep-rooted expectation of the people in Pakistani culture that the military will come to their rescue to rid a corrupt and inefficient government, even at the expense of democracy.

But, I as an observer of military matters believe that those days seem to be over for now. With Imran out of power for long and under arrest, and his supporters creating unprecedented civil unrest situation in the history of Pakistan, there appear no signs of an imminent hard or soft coup by the generals. The army, it seems has digested the insult of torching of houses of two important Corps command-

Indeed, it is for political or social thinkers to describe this mystery in its entirety. I personally feel that though each Pakistan military dictator was of a different brand & style and was subjected to different circumstances while coming to power, they all helped their adversaries to bounce back to power with a vengeance. All of them were possessed with gaining legitimacy to an illegitimate take over. The prescription to make the Supreme Court endorse the military takeover plagued all of them.

secure environment in the game was favourable to the military regime in the beginning, a bit of arm twisting and the belief that power flows through the barrel of the gun helped the fortune seekers to power. The complications came to light when the generals at the helm tried fitting into the long-established political mould. Each time the Khakhi came to power in Pakistan, the people realised that the moneymaking greed by those in power was no different to the earlier civilian regime.

In current times the Pakistan military leadership faces a significant mess. Though it enjoys a special reputation in the country’s political scenario, it is also

TIGER T-104 FAILS TO SURVIVE POST RELOCATION TO SAJJANGARH PARK

Second death in one week in State; earlier, a pregnant tigress had died at Mukundra

Nirmal Tiwari

Sawai Madhopur:

Ranthambore’s dreaded tiger T-104, which was shifted from Ranthambore to Sajjangarh Biological Park in Udaipur on Tuesday morning, died within 24 hours after its departure.

The tiger was sent from Ranthambore to Sajjangarh at around 8 am and team reached there between 1.30 and 2 in the afternoon. After this, the tiger was monitored in the cage for several hours and was released in the Biological Park at around 8 in the night.

After this, the tiger went to a water hole at around 10 pm and sat in the water. When the patrolling forest personnel returned to the spot at around 11.30 pm, they found the tiger lying at the same spot. The personnel tried to pick up the tiger by making noise but the tiger did not move. On going closer, it was found that the tiger had died.

MORE THAN 30 TIGERS HAVE DIED IN THE STATE IN 4 YEARS

n the year when the country is celebrating the golden jubilee of Project Tiger, the serial death of tigers in the state has shaken the wildlife world. The death of more than 30 tigers in four years and the disappearance of the same number of tigers have raised serious questions on forest management. After the death of MT4 in Mukundra, the death of T-104 in Udaipur’s Sajjangarh Biological Park has angered wildlife lovers and they are demanding concrete action. Negligence was done in shifting the tiger from a closed vehicle about 700 km away from its location during day time in the scorching heat. It is also necessary to know the truth of tranquilising it in excess. In the initial form, it shows the insensitivity and negligence of the department and officials concerned. I urge CM Ashok Gehlot and Forest Minister Hemaram Choudhary to take cognisance of this very sensitive issue and take action against the concerned officials.

—Rajiv Arora, RAJSICO Chairman

In the initial investigation, it has come to fore that the tiger died of multiple organ failure. The exact cause of death would be known after post-mortem. —

I did face a lot of difficulties in school on both accounts of having grown up in a non-traditional manner, considering I started to act at a very young age which kept me away from studies at times, and having to deal with select faculty who would treat me differently (not positive) on account of my family background.

s Co-Founder of Driveway Devi, I had the privilege of sitting down with renowned actor Riya Sen and asking her a slew of questions that delved into her childhood and growing up years, the inheritance of a royal as well as artistic legacy, and her thoughts on mental health. Here are excerpts from that extremely candid and no-hold-barred interaction.

I did not face any significant problems in college. I was on my own in Mumbai at the time.

What are your views and perception on, and of divorce, especially from the perspective of children of acrimonious couples? Some say children need both parents; others contend it is better to have at least one happy parent, than two miserable ones.

I think that divorce is much harder on children

Could you share the precise circumstances of your foray into acting? Was it expected, suspected, premeditated, or none of the above?

Acting came to me completely by fluke and my actual first film was just at the age of about four where I played my own mother`s child! My family never expected or put any pressure on me to start acting. It somehow just happened and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in it!

Careful contemplation only came after (laughs!).

Speak to some challenges you faced upon debuting celluloid. After all, there was naturally immense pressure and scrutiny was there not?

Main challenge was that I was so young when I started shooting for music videos and movies. I`d be sur-

Fame and celebrity can be a painful and erratic mistress. How have you coped with the various peaks and valleys of stardom?

I`ve certainly gone through my share of extreme situations due to how certain movies have done or just losing opportunities at the last moment. There is a lot of heartache that is not seen on screen!

I have always been very spiritual and practice yoga regularly. This has helped me a lot
