Nominate an Unsung Hero

This year’s Leadership Lexington class is preparing to launch the inaugural Lexington Unsung Heroes Ball at the Longship Club in August. The event aims to honor community members for their impactful contributions to our city that often go unnoticed. Before the night is over, seven people in public and civil service positions will be honored for their efforts that benefited the greater good. Project Leader Bilal El-Amin says, “We are proud of the city we live in, and we want to be intentional in recognizing the good things happening here.”

The Planning Committee is asking the public to join them by nominating deserving people for an award. This is an opportunity to recognize a person with a strong commitment to Lexington who has gone above and beyond in service to our community and to let them know their selfless dedication is making a difference. Visit www.lexheroball.org to nominate.

Zoning moves forward for soccer

Lexington Sporting Club is well into its first season, playing at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, and with a complex of fields located at AthensBoonesboro. Lexington Urban County Council

approved a zone change in late April that classifies 5380 and 5354 Athens Boonesboro Road a Highway Service Business, or B-3, which would make stadium construction one step closer to a possibility in the neighborhood.

LSC majority owner Bill Shively told the HeraldLeader, “It’s going to be difficult to build at Athens. It’s not a commitment right now that we can make… There are places that are extremely interested in having us.”

An alternative development plan has also been proposed that would site the stadium in Brannon Crossing/ Nicholasville/ Jessamine County.

Building Community Bridges

Welcome to the Clays Ferry overlook

If there was a documentary Bridges of Madison County movie, it probably wouldn’t star Clint Eastwood. The star would be The Clays Ferry I-75 bridge soaring 250-plus feet above the Kentucky River and quickly connecting Lexington and Richmond, replacing years of ferry rides.

The Clays Ferry overlook wall was built in 1934, as a scenic overlook on the Old Dixie Highway.

The “co-star” would definitely be lifelong Madison County native, Jay Webb. He builds custom cars, trucks, and motorcycles and says, he’d “been interested in the Dixie Highway for years, and this was a major point along it.”

A friend of his was related to family who “owned a portion of the property and he mentioned selling

it, so that was my first contact. After I purchased that I tracked down the owners of the rest of the property and convinced them to sell.”

Admitting the project was “an enormous undertaking” — progress was slowed down by “a heart attack and triple-bypass open heart surgery” — he adds, seeing “how many people stop and enjoy it again makes it worthwhile. Every age and walk of life stops by. I can’t count the number of ‘Thank Yous’ I’ve had.”

In recent years, the spot has been the site of proposals, graduation photos, and even weddings, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, the Overlook has often served as a dumping ground. Webb’s cleanup efforts have been significant, and are ongoing. He estimates he’s removed 150 tires just since he bought the property.

“I just thought it was such a beautiful place and I wanted to save it,” he says.

As for the future of the property, he says, “Hopefully I can turn the little house into some sort of visitor center. I’ve been accumulating as much memorabilia as I can of the area to display.” Fans have been posting decades of history, memory, and shared photos on the Facebook page, which has amassed nearly 5000 followers.

Visit the Overlook’s page, maintained by Webb, at facebook.com/claysferryoverlook.

UK approves Design Phase in Hamburg

Aplan to begin the design phase for the construction of an outpatient medical facility on land recently approved to be acquired in the Hamburg area was approved Thursday by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Health Care Committee.

UK HealthCare identified a location in the Hamburg area of Lexington to expand its facilities last year and the UK Board of Trustees approved the acquisitions of a total of 41 acres at its June 17, 2022, and Feb. 17, 2023, meetings.

The area in and around Hamburg – specifically, the 40509 zip code – has the largest concentration of UK employees in the county. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the region.”

“A key strategic imperative for our university and our academic health system is to take care of our people. The area in and around Hamburg – specifically, the 40509 zip code – has the largest concentration of UK employees in the county. It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the region,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “Our mission is to advance Kentucky in everything that we do and a healthier state where more people have greater access to quality patient care, closer to their home is a critical part of that mission.”

The $30 million approved for the project will initiate the design phase that will include detailed programming services, schematic design through construction documentation phases and budget estimates for all phases with projected timelines. The new outpatient medical facility will be the first phase of a potential multi-phased project at this new campus. Additional Board approval will be required to initiate the construction phase.

In addition to this approval, the Board endorsed plans to continue to establish new smaller ambulatory sites, specifically to serve UK’s families closer to their homes as well as to address critical needs for medically underserved populations in Fayette County.

UK HealthCare currently offers outpatient services at several other medical facilities across Lexington, including Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s pediatric clinics, the Good Samaritan Professional Arts Center, UK HealthCare-Turfland, the Lexington Surgery Center, Kentucky Clinic South, Polk-Dalton Clinic, the UK HealthCare offices at Fountain Court, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.

Blue Grass Airport Opens Nursing Suite

Blue Grass Airport has opened a Mothers’ Nursing Suite as a new amenity in the airport terminal. Dedicated exclusively to nursing mothers, this suite provides a comfortable space for breastfeeding or pumping mothers while traveling with their families.

Conveniently located post-security in the Concourse B gate areas, this new suite includes two small rooms—one private space with a locked door and a larger room that includes a microwave, deep sink, full-length mirror, diaper changing station, wellplaced electrical outlets and space for luggage. Both

rooms include comfortable gliding and rocking chairs, and the aesthetics, lighting and décor in the suite are soothing and soft to provide a calm setting.

“The addition of this suite will provide a great experience for nursing mothers flying to/from Lexington,” said Eric Frankl, president & CEO of Blue Grass Airport. “We realize that it can be challenging for mothers when they travel, and we hope this new facility will ease that process and provide them with a comfortable and private location.

SUMMER HEAT ADVISORIES

Lexington’s Division of Emergency Management is reminding the public that: “About 40 children a year die from heatstroke, either because they were left or became trapped in a car. That’s about one child every ten days killed in a hot car. As of May 2023, four children have died due to being forgotten in parked cars.”

HEATSTROKE FACTS

The majority of hot car deaths — 53% — happen because someone forgets a child in a car. You may be asking yourself: How does this happen? Families who lost a loved one thought

the same thing at one point, but then the tragedy happened to them. Hot car deaths don’t just occur in the summer heat. On average, the first vehicular heatstroke of the year happens in March, according to Jan Null, who has been tracking such deaths since 1998. Among the trends he discovered over the years:

• About 46% of the time when a child was forgotten, the caregiver meant to drop the child off at a daycare or preschool.

• Thursdays and Fridays — the end of the workweek — have had the highest deaths.

• More than half of the deaths (54%) are children under 2 years old.

12 hamburgjournal.com | June 2023 HEALTH AND WELLNESS

CHECK THE BACK SEAT

Parents and caregivers, get in the habit of always checking the back seat of the car before locking the doors. Remember: Check the Back Seat.

• Place a briefcase, purse, or cell phone next to the child’s car seat so that you’ll always check the back seat before leaving the car.

• Keep a stuffed animal or another toy in your child’s car seat when it’s empty. Move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat.

• Set a rule for your childcare provider; have them call you if your child doesn’t arrive as scheduled. Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
