Bed Bath & Bankruptcy

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and quickly discontinued its popular coupon program within days of the announcements. Stores are expected to be shuttered by this summer. CNN reported that chains including “TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and Ross have scooped up sBome vacant stores.

Burlington, Five Below, Nordstrom Rack and budget gym Planet Fitness” may also be among the suitors for the space in some markets. Tuesday Morning, another popular neighborhood mainstay, also announced plans to close more than 250 stores this year as part of their bankruptcy. (This is expected to include both Lexington stores.)

Calhoun Comes to Town

Construction firm Calhoun Construction Services has announced their new location in Lexington, KY, currently under construction and anticipated to open this month.

John Hinshaw, President of Calhoun Construction, said “We have been looking for the right location for quite some time now.

Lexington is not slowing down anytime soon. We know that being local is imperative to providing the highest level of service.”

Commonwealth Credit Union Gifts $1 Million to EKU

Commonwealth Credit Union (CCU) and Eastern Kentucky University recently announced an agreement of a $1-million gift to support the

Evans Banking and Financial Services program and the establishment of a new certificate program in Financial Technology and Cybercrime. In recognition of CCU’s gift, the Learning Commons at Stratton Building will be renamed the Commonwealth Credit Union Learning Lounge.

EKU President Dr. David McFaddin said, “Their generous investment will make a difference for generations of students and provide talented graduates to meet the workforce needs of the financial sector.”

CCU’s CEO Karen Harbin said, “While this donation will help launch the Financial and Cybersecurity certification program, it’s also an investment in

keeping our best and brightest right here in Kentucky as they begin their careers. I’ve been where these students are, and as a proud EKU Alumna, this opportunity is one that is near and dear to my heart.”

EKU’s new Financial Technology and Cybercrime certificate program focuses on solving vulnerabilities in the financial system, making it the first of its kind in the US.

Art by Nature: Urban Creeks

Lexington is seeking submissions for Art by Nature: Urban Creeks, a celebration of our local environment. This year’s exhibit will feature 35 creek sites from across Fayette County. Visual artists of all types —painters, photographers, fiber artists, jewelry makers, sculptors, glass artists and more — are encouraged to participate.

This year’s theme brings attention to local creek environments, which often go unseen. It also provides an opportunity to highlight how residents can protect local waterways.

The 2023 exhibit will be held from Oct. 13 through Nov. 24 at the Living Arts and Science Center. The program is not juried; artists of all levels are welcome to participate by submitting up to three pieces. Participants are guaranteed only one spot in the show. Works are for sale with proceeds going to the artist, though an artist may choose to keep their piece.

The City is planning a series of art and nature events in conjunction with the exhibit. Details on those events will be announced in early June.

The second round of public input is requested for Lexington’s Imagine New Circle forum. Lexington’s Division of Planning is leading a study called Imagine New Circle. Lexington Public Library is Now Fine Free

The Lexington Public Library will be Fine Free for all materials, effective immediately, following a vote at April’s regularly scheduled monthly board meeting. Lexington Public Library customers will no longer incur fines for late, damaged, or lost library materials. Additionally, the Library has forgiven all current, outstanding fines.

Lexington Public Library is making this change because overdue fines disproportionally affect children and low-income households. Late fines may create a financial barrier for people in accessing

library materials. Libraries that have gone Fine Free have reported less stigma and an increased likelihood for patrons to re-engage with their library and its services as a result.

The Lexington Public Library is a center of community life that connects people of all ages with information, engages them with the world of ideas and with each other, and enriches the community by supporting learning, promoting literacy, and encouraging creativity.

Bell awarded honorary UK Degree in 2022

Bell was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Kentucky late last year, at the age of 100.

Born in Harrison County, Kentucky in 1922, Virginia Bell was raised on a subsistence farm as the second of seven children. She earned a bachelor’s degree in math and biology at Transylvania University in 1944.

Bell and her husband moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they raised five children. The family returned to Lexington in 1974 when her husband accepted the presidency of the Lexington Theological Seminary. At that same time, Bell’s parents, still living on the farm outside of Cynthiana, began experiencing the challenges of aging, allowing Bell to witness firsthand how care was provided for older adults. These experiences, plus earlier life exposures to how persons with dementia were being shuttered in psychiatric units, ignited her commitment to do something more for aging adults, particularly those with dementia and their families.

There is perhaps no better way to celebrate Senior Citizens Awareness Month than to honor the legacy and memory of Lexington senior living advocate, Virginia Bell.

Bell died peacefully at the age of 100 in her home on the evening of April 8, 2023, with family at her side and with plans for the Easter service the next morning. She was born June 30, 1922, in Harrison County, KY.

“This movement to make our city Dementia Friendly has been a dream of Lexington native, Virginia Bell,” Amber Lakin, Chairperson of the Dementia Friendly Lexington Advisory Board, said as the program began to gain recognition.

Bell was widely lauded for her work in adult day care, developing one of the first dementia-specific adult day programs in the country, using a unique method of care based on friendship, known as the Best Friends Approach.

This approach is celebrated for its positive philosophy stressing dignity and techniques for success when facing a challenging disease.

In 1992, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Transylvania University. In 1999, she received the Senior Award from the American Society on Aging for her dedication to the significant contribution that older persons can make to society. She was inducted into the UK Social Work Hall of Fame and received the Sullivan Award from the University of Kentucky in 2004. In 2022, at the age of 100, she received an honorary doctorate from University of Kentucky. Throughout her career, she penned numerous articles and books and lectured both nationally and internationally on the Best Friends approach to dementia care, as well as on spirituality and aging with Wayne. They were proud to have visited forty countries around the globe during their adventuresome years together.

A memorial service will be held at Central Christian Church, Lexington, KY, at 2 pm Saturday, May 13, with a reception to follow. At age 60, Bell earned a Master of Social Work at UK, began her second career at UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and created the Best Friends Approach to dementia care, a model adopted by care facilities, nursing homes and day treatment centers around the world. While acknowledging the medical and psychological challenges of dementia, the Best Friends Approach emphasizes and respects the humanity of people with dementia and focuses on relationshipcentered care. Understanding that each person has a life history, identity and talents, the Best Friends Approach embraces the human need for connection through interpersonal interaction, activity, dignity and respect.

The approach, and Bell herself, received numerous honors, grants and awards, including recognition by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Council on Aging and the American Society on Aging. Bell twice has served on the Kentucky Governor’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease; she received UK’s Sullivan Award in 2004; she was inducted into the UK Social Work Hall of Fame (2010) and she received the UK Alumni Association Hall of Distinguished Alumni Award (2010).

While she officially retired in 1993, Bell remained a constant mentor to the Best Friends program, conducting training for volunteers, attending activities at day centers, traveling throughout the world to help establish new programs and serving as a keynote speaker at national and international conferences. Around the time of her 100th birthday in June 2022, Bell addressed a global meeting on Alzheimer’s disease, continuing her efforts to recognize that beneath the challenges of dementia lies a person of value with a past, present and future.

Teachers’ Academy

The City of Lexington is now accepting applicants for the Teachers’ Environmental Academy. In its fourth year, participating educators take part in a week-long workshop focused on environmental challenges in Lexington.

The workshop series, June 12 – 16 for elementary teachers and July 10 – 14 for middle/high teachers, is open to kindergarten through 12th-grade educators who work in public or private schools in Fayette County. Workshops will focus on multi-modal transportation, waste management and water quality.

“Thanks to what I learned from the Teachers’ Environmental Academy, I was able to develop a project where students researched issues faced by

our wastewater treatment process,” says Veronica Boller, STEM Educator and Sustainability Coordinator at Coventry Oak Elementary. “They learned about things they could do to make a positive impact on our sewer systems while also getting exposed to potential engineering jobs for their futures. I highly recommend this program to other teachers!”

Educators will receive training in curricula aligned to the Kentucky Academic Standards: Don’t Waste It, Project WET, Project WILD and Population Education. Teachers who complete the Academy by participating in all five days will receive a $500 stipend or have costs for a substitute reimbursed. Participants will tour the Lexington Recycle Center, the Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant and other facilities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Applications are open through Monday, May 15.

ConGRADulations Graduates!

The Fayette County Board of Education has confirmed that Friday, May 26, will be the last day of classes because Fayette County Public Schools will have met the state requirements for instructional days and hours in the 2022-23 school year without using weather make-up days. The board also agreed to add five flexible staff development days to allow

employees to complete their contract obligations. The affected work calendars will be updated online this week.

In addition, district leaders released the schedule for high school graduations in Rupp Arena, which will follow the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

No Debate: Blue Devils Dominate

The team from Henry Clay High School has won the Kentucky High School Speech League’s State Debate Tournament for the 10th straight year. Henry Clay also received the 2023 Sustained Excellence Award, which goes to the team with the top accumulated points over consecutive years. After receiving this honor, a team’s points reset to zero. Henry Clay last earned this award in 2020, when it was established.

“To say that I am proud of these kids would be a massive understatement. I am beyond proud! I tell them at every tournament we attend how proud they make me with their hard work and determination to succeed,” said Ryan Ray, Henry Clay’s speech and debate coach.

Paul Laurence Dunbar was runner-up in the state tournament, which drew 12 participating schools March 24-25 at host Transylvania University.

The UK Art Museum welcomes author Jayne Moore Waldrop for a storytime event featuring her new book A Journey in Color: The Art of Ellis Wilson. Waldrop will conduct a read-aloud of the book in the Museum’s ground floor gallery, followed by an opportunity for participants to create an original collage based on the works of Ellis Wilson. Lexington Parks and Recreation Department is offering eight engaging themed weeks for teens in June and July as part of its Community Summer Teen Retreat. Teenagers aged 13-17 are eligible to participate. These weeks will cover Aquatics Exploration and Recreation, Local Leaders, Exploring Kentucky Natural Areas, Sports & Health, and more. CHI Saint Joseph Health and Lexington Clinic Announce New Partnership

CHI Saint Joseph Health and Lexington Clinic recently announced a partnership in which Lexington Clinic will provide physician staffing for the emergency departments at seven hospitals and an ambulatory care center in the CHI Saint Joseph Health system. The change took effect April 17.

“We are excited about this new opportunity to create an even stronger emergency medicine program in our hospitals to serve our patients and our communities with excellence and compassion,” said Anthony Houston, Ed.D., FACHE, CEO, CHI Saint Joseph Health. “This new partnership builds upon a century-long relationship with the Lexington Clinic where we share a strong track record of providing the highest quality of care to our communities.”

Host an event for Bike Month

In May, Lexington will celebrate its second annual Bike Month and you are invited to host an event! Bike Month will celebrate riding a bicycle for transportation, exercise and/or fun while reminding drivers to slow down, pay attention and share the road.

The month-long celebration will include inperson, virtual, and self-paced events hosted by the city and community partners.

The City will host two beginner-level commuter cycling courses and a Bike to Work breakfast during the month.

The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will also host its second annual StreetFest as part of Bike Month on Saturday, May 13. Oliver Lewis Way will be closed between High Street and Broadway to allow people to bike, scoot, skate, jog or walk along the closed street. Community organizations are invited to share resources and host performances, classes or demonstrations related to the event’s mission.

City councilmembers attended the Kentucky Tobacco Control Conference to accept the Timothy W Mullett, MD Lung Cancer Award. The award is for the Council’s leadership in preventing lung cancer through education, advocacy, or policy change in tobacco and/or radon control, lung cancer screening, or other lung cancer prevention activities.

On the day before her special day, hop a train with your Mom for the annual Mother’s Day Weekend Train at Bluegrass Railroad Museum and treat them to a special afternoon. All moms ride for half the price of a regular ticket on May 13 when accompanied by one or more of her children.

Boarding begins at 10:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. departure, but come early to see the museum exhibits and displays on-site.

The ride is approximately 90 minutes, and includes a mid-ride stop, with the opportunity for passengers to disembark, walk up to the edge of the High Bridge, and overlook the Kentucky River Palisades.

Class ticket includes one glass of wine or mimosa provided by Harkness Edwards Vineyards. Mayfest Arts Fair is a Mother’s Day weekend tradition in Lexington. Swing by Gratz Park on either Saturday or Sunday for a juried art fair in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere. Included are up to 100 Artist Vendors, performances by musicians, dancers, strolling performers, food concession vendors, and family activities. Let Mom pick out her own present from one of the many artists on site.

FoodChain’s aquaponics farm, food literacy education programs, and direct food access all increase availability to locally sourced, fresh food for everyone.

Are you up to Code?

The Division of Code Enforcement is preparing for spring – their busiest time of the year. As the weather warms, Code Enforcement will see an increase in nuisance violation complaints.

Nuisance violations, outlined in Chapter 12 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, prevents property owners from having any of the following on their property:

• Grass and/or weeds 10” inches or more in height.

• Bushes, hedges and/or trees that interfere with sidewalk travel.

• The accumulation of trash and debris located in the yard.

• Furniture and appliances designed for indoor use, but located outside.

• Any junked, wrecked, non-licensed, improperly licensed or inoperable vehicle (car, truck, etc.).

As residents get out more to enjoy the nicer weather, they will begin to notice sidewalks that are broken, unleveled and/or safety hazards. Sidewalk repairs are the responsibility of the abutting property owner. Please make sure that your sidewalk is safe for others to travel on. You can find more information on sidewalks in Chapter 17 of the Code of Ordinances.

Results from Reforest

Some 7,000 trees were planted during last month’s Reforest the Bluegrass event. More than 550 volunteers planted seedlings and young trees at Hisle Farm Park in northern Fayette County.

This was the first large-scale planting in four years. More than 207,000 trees have now been planted during Reforest the Bluegrass events over the past 24 years by more than by 18,000 volunteers. For more information about Reforest at Home, visit lexingtonky.gov/Reforest.
