If not now, when? My belief about life has become a true passion for me in this lifetime. I believe that we are born with this amazing energy by the very nature of our being. And when we die, we should have as much energy, if not more, than at our birth. This belief unfortunately is not supported by the masses. The masses teach us what to think rather than how to think for ourselves. The Fillmores, Mary Baker Eddy, Ernest Holmes and so many other New Thought leaders almost doubled their life expectancies! It is up to all of us to be role models during a time when so many people are told what to do and what to believe. The Unity message is a message of life and rejuvenation! The masses also teach us that every event in our lives takes more and more of ourselves away. We are taught that by the time we reach a certain age, we will be very old. We are taught by some of our communities that we will die at about the same age in which our parents died or our family members died. We are taught in some environments that by the time we are 40ish or 50ish that we will be tired, we will be old, and it is too late to dream or create or to thrive. You can see on every television channel at any given time the promotions of what you need to do for your heart and the medication you need to take to be energized or less depressed or to replace hair or to take it way. It is one thing to be proactive and make wonderful choices in our lives which will support our youthful energy and vitality; it is another when we are coming from the energy of avoidance. Anytime we take action based upon a choice of avoiding or not wanting something to happen, we bring the lower vibration of what we do not want to happen into our creativity. We as a culture avoid the idea of death so much that we fail to realize that by avoiding it, many of us never live. Dying is natural; not living is not. How many couples do you meet who have

been together for 30, 40 or 50 years that you would actually like to model? Very few? Most of them come from the paradigm that they actually survived each other all those years, rather than each and every year, having a ceremony and asking one another, "How can I support you this coming year in being the best individual possible?" How magical a relationship would be with another adult if each person knew it was their God-duty to support the other one with being their authentic self. The song "Hokey Pokey" speaks to me: "You put your left foot in, your put your left foot out, you foot your left foot in and you shake it all about, you do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around, that’s what it’s all about." What about: "You put your whole self in, you put your whole self out, you put your whole self in and you shake it all about"…what would happen if you put your whole self in? Charles Fillmore said when he was 93 years of age, "I fairly sizzle with zeal and enthusiasm and spring forth with a mighty faith to do the things that ought to be done by me." As you enter this year of 2010, if not now, when? Are there things in life that ought to be done by you? It is my knowing for you that this will be your best year yet, and you will give life all that you have. We are totally thriving here at First Unity and invite you to put your whole self in. Now is when in 2010. Loving life, Temple

Spiritual Education and Enrichment From its inception in the 1880s, Unity has been a teaching movement. Co-founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore did not found a church, although churches and centers did emerge from their work; they founded a school – Unity School of Christianity. The commitment to spiritual education inaugurated by the Fillmores continues to this day in Unity churches and centers as well as on our campus here at First Unity of St. Petersburg. International direction of Unity-based education is coordinated by Unity Institute, the educational wing of the Unity Movement, headquartered outside Kansas City in Unity Village, Missouri. According to Rev. Paul Hasselbeck, dean of spiritual education, “Our mission is to assist you along your personal path to spiritual growth. The Spiritual Education & Enrichment (SEE) program is designed for those who have the eyes to see in new ways, to look deeper than ever before. We invite you to be a part of this great adventure of life! As an SEE student, you can explore at your own pace. If you choose to commit to a program of growth, you can receive credits for these life-transforming classes in our spiritual development program, which can be a stepping-stone to becoming a Licensed Unity Teacher or even an ordained Unity minister.
(Licensed Unity Teachers are empowered to serve Unity ministries as recognized leaders.) The possibilities for you are unlimited, and I invite you to explore any and all options that pique your interest. Courses are being developed and added on a regular basis to support ongoing study and growth. They cover a broad range of topics designed to help you uncover spiritual truths and put them into practice in your life for greater health, peace, love, joy and prosperity.” First Unity is proud to offer a broad range of spiritual education topics, and all classes that directly relate to Unity teachings are clearly noted as such in the course description. Do you want to deepen your understanding and practice of Unity teachings? Have you received the gentle nudge or whisper (or not so gentle nudge or whisper...) calling to you greater spiritual service as a Licensed Unity Teacher or minister? If so, please contact Rev. Russell Heiland at 527-2222 x110 or email russell@firstunity.org for further guidance on bringing this calling to manifestation.
Rev. Russell Heiland, Associate Minister
Deepen your understanding and practice of Unity teachings with Rev. Russell at any of our upcoming SEE classes.. see pgs 16-18.
Unity and Lent — A Special Evening of Spiritual Deepening Wednesday, February 17 immediately following the Prayer & Healing service Presented by Rev. Russell and our chaplains, this evening experience will combine teaching and meditation to provide our community with a deeper spiritual awareness of how New Thought metaphysics provides a way to find meaning in the traditions of the Christian observance of Lent. This 40-day period that precedes Easter is rife with symbols that, when seen in light of the spiritual principles we teach, can make the Easter season an especially beautiful time.

In our personal lives, the New Year is often the time for doing away with the old – or things that are not working - and creating something new and different. In January of this year everyone in our church – but especially our parents and guardians – will have an opportunity to do exactly that as it relates to our Youth & Family Ministry (YFM) program. On January 10 right after the 2nd service we will provide you the opportunity to create a new vision for YFM – both spiritually on Sunday mornings and socially throughout the week and weekends. This visioning process will take place in rooms #200-204 (upstairs above Friendship Hall). We will have the children and youth remain in their classrooms with their teachers while we meet and talk about what we would like to see happening in YFM. On January 17, we will do a similar process with our children and youth and get their input on what they would like to see taking place in their program. In the meantime, there are several personal visions that I would like to share with you as they relate to YFM: First, my vision is to have all of the children and youth who are connected with our church have a strong foundation in Unity principles. I do not want them saying in their adult years as I frequently hear adults say, “If only I had known these spiritual principles as a child, I feel my life would have been so much easier.” And then I would like to see all of the children and youth throughout our St. Pete community become familiar with these principles. Second, I have a vision that our curriculum on Sunday mornings becomes more formalized in the aspect of the “introduction” of spiritual principles versus an indepth and metaphysical understanding of those same principles. So at certain ages, the children are introduced to specific spiritual principles and then at an older age they delve deeper into a metaphysical understanding of those principles. Third, my vision is that all of our classrooms
Youth & Family News
speak to our children and youth. Our Nursery or “Enchanted Garden” room is such a room. The décor and layout of the room is welcoming and supports the vision for this room which is to provide a safe, loving and nurturing environment for our babies and toddlers. We want all of our classrooms to entice the children to come in, feel safe and have fun learning spiritual principles. Fourth, my vision is that every congregant who attends First Unity has a connection with our YFM program – either through volunteering their time, talents or treasures. I feel this is especially important for our parents/guardians. It is important that we make a difference in our children’s lives since they are our future and our lives will at some point depend on them. Fifth, my vision is for some type of summer camp or program where kids from our church and throughout the community can gather here at First Unity, be creative and have fun in a supervised setting. Sixth, my vision is for our YFM program to extend more into the week. A program where we are offering an abundance of social events and activities and giving our children and youth the opportunity to socially get together with like minded peers and have fun. I also see a program where we are offering parents and guardians the opportunity to come together and take various classes on effective parenting. We have a great YFM program here at First Unity and with your help we can take it to the next level and make it even more exciting for our children and youth. Please join us January 10 at 12:30 pm and help us create the vision.

Holistic Approaches
for Indigo and Sensitive Children and Teens
Thursday, February 18, 6:30 to 9 pm
Calling all parents, psychotherapists, teachers, and child care professionals ... do you work with or want to work with Indigo children? Join Julie Rosenshein, ATP LICSW, for an evening of hands-on strategies and tools to use with highly sensitive Indigo or "ADHD" children. Julie, known as The Indigo Doc, will teach you about the four types of highly sensitive children and what you can do to help them physically, emotionally and spiritually at home and in school. This basic class provides you with the tools you need to help children develop in mind, body, emotion and spirit. Many children today are labeled ADHD or bipolar and given medication before any other holistic approaches are even tried. Indigo and highly sensitive children need holistic interventions that can help them heal and honor their inherent gifts. Julie has worked with countless families, children and adults and knows what works! Topics covered will be nutrition, behavioral management, home environment, spiritual support and school life.
Participants will: • Learn the four types of high sensitivity and know if they or their child has these traits. The term “Indigo” will be de-mystified. • Discover five ways they can help the Indigo or HSC in their life minimize tantrums, anger and depression. • Discover the gifts that this temperament has to offer. Tickets for this interactive workshop are $30 and are available at Wings Bookstore, or by calling 522-6657. Childcare is available upon request. Please RSVP to Dianna Collins at 522-2222 x107 by February 11 if you would like childcare provided during the workshop.

Your Legacy of Love What will your legacy be when you transition? Every well-known advice writer including Ann Landers, Dear Abby, and the columnist who writes “Your Money Matters for the Wall Street Journal has advised people to write a will to make it clear what their wishes are.
The most caring legacy we can give those closest to us is a specific set of instructions that will enable them to know our preferences, yet most people put it off. The Living Legacy Team is dedicated to assisting you to become aware of the mutual blessings that arise when you become a part of our planned giving ministry. Leaving a gift in your will to First Unity Church is an eternal extension of your generosity as well as being an example of enduring support for the Unity mission and teachings. Your gift provides the opportunity for others to experience the blessings of love and healing that Unity offers. On November 15, the Living Legacy Team was introduced to the congregation at the Annual meeting, and a Living Legacy brochure was made available to the membership. On January 31, Attorney Bill Zewadski will speak to the congregation in the Sanctuary at 1:30 pm about the importance of charitable giving and how painless it can be when it is part of your estate plan. On February 20, a panel of experts will be available in Friendship Hall at 3 pm and will answer your questions about a variety of estate planning matters. You are encouraged to bring your questions. Planned gifts are eternal in scope, yet created within this earthly framework. We highly recommend that you use the services of qualified legal and tax advisors when making these plans. If you are already working with counsel that gives you peace of mind, please involve them in the process. Living Legacy Team member Will Slicker is an attorney who assists people with wills, trusts, and other estate planning. He is offering his services in these areas to any member of First Unity at a reduced rate, and would be happy to meet with you to discuss your situation. We invite you to call Barb Zagaria in the church office at 527-2222 x104 for further information.

Come See Us at the Library We have been redecorating and revamping, and now First Unity Library has a new children’s section. And did you know that we also have movies and books on CD? Stop by on Sunday to say hello and see our new look! The First Unity Library is like a regular public library, and our check-out time period is three weeks. The difference is we do not charge you for overdue books. We are completely self-sufficient and rely on your donations (dollars and books) for support. The Library will accept any and all of your books (in good condition) because once a year we will have a fundraising sale and sell any books we do not put on the library shelves. If you have novels, mysteries, best sellers, CDs or DVDs, that you
do not want to toss out, bring them to us! And remember, all donations are tax deductible. We need you....while the Library is always “open,” it is not always staffed. Our future plans are to have someone present in the Library during Discover Unity and other functions in Friendship Hall. If you have ever considered volunteering, this is a great time to connect, have fun, and meet people. Come in after Sunday service and talk to us.

presentation is designed for seniors (or anyone else who may be interested) in dealing with spiritual, motivational and practical issues. The program will begin with devotions, which will include readings, singing, spiritual guidance, prayer and meditation. This will be followed by thirty minutes with presentations on issues important to seniors; issues related to health, legal concerns, separation from loved ones, self-motivation, entertainment, etc. For those who care to share lunch together Spice Routes is preparing a special luncheon for
us which will be smaller portions for seniors and reasonably priced. Unity EarthCare Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. ~Chief Seattle, 1855 Earth Angels continue making progress at the First Unity campus and beyond, working to foster harmony and promote a more sustainable campus. New volunteers have come forward with interests and passions, allowing us to begin a number of projects. Our sacred labyrinth and the grounds by the 45th Ave. entrance have been given special care and attention. A new gate welcomes you, with a sign introducing the labyrinth. We were blessed by receiving additional benches to sit and enjoy the peace. Take a moment to talk to the Divine Creator and listen—just take a walk in the labyrinth. Cell phone recycling and fundraising collection began in November, before the start of holiday
shopping. Through this project, we create awareness and reduce waste while sharing prosperity with the church. As the cherry on the top, we’ll use the money to fund one of the projects suggested by Progress Energy’s audit to lower our monthly electric bill. Not just a win-win but a win-win-win! Unity EarthCare is a nation-wide Unity program that asks congregations to commit to a renewed reverence for life and respect for the interdependent web of all existence. First Unity has taken the first step in this EarthCare covenant, and plans to consecrate at the Spring Equinox ceremony in late March. Earth month is coming up in the spring, so be on the lookout for interesting events.

minimize stress. In addition, it will improve your overall health, body/mind connection and the cultivation of spirit regardless of faith. Qigong is especially effective for improving the functioning of the lower digestive tract, thus cleaning out toxins! Suggested love offering $25. Mati Vizcaino has been a pediatric RN for the past 20 years, a transplant coordinator for almost eight years and a Qigong practitioner for two years. Working with children has given her the most amazing opportunity to stay in touch with the “child within” and to remember on a daily basis what is really important. The practice of Qigong has opened the door to “the healer within” energy experience. The “breath empowerment” practice allowed her to experience a significant breakthrough in her life, the lightness of being and the awareness of the connection we all share, the “all is one” consciousness has been the driving force behind her desire to share this healing practice with all.
Jesus Related to Whom? Some “Shady Ladies” you say? Facilitator: Sheila Kaye Mondays, January 25 - February 22, 7 to 9 pm (5 weeks) Location: Rm #301 The genealogy of Jesus' family tree holds a few surprises that will titillate your curiosity and intrigue your mind. The Gospel of Matthew identifies a few women in the “begot” list at a time when women, less valued than animals, were being dismissed. Hereditary importance was not granted to women. What was Matthew thinking? What purpose did he believe Jesus fulfilled? What message was Matthew attempting to convey to the populace?
Participate in this exploration of our spiritual heritage and become acquainted with the lineage of “Spirit Babes” documented in the story of Jesus of Nazareth. Bring your Bibles, your open mind, and experience a new vision of Matthew’s rendition of the ministry of Jesus. The suggested love offering is $20 each session. Sheila Kaye, spiritual counselor and curious-minded teacher/ student, encourages you to participate in this unveiling of the spicy stories of resilient, resourceful, courageous women of Biblical history. Can the drama of these powerful women resonate with the challenges of our own era? Can their experiences enlighten and encourage individuals today as they face their fears, examine their values, and step into the grey areas of life? Absolutely!

How It Came into Being A Course in Miracles began with the sudden decision of two people to join in a common goal. Their names were Helen Schucman and William Thetford, professors of medical psychology at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. They were anything but spiritual. Their relationship with each other was difficult and often strained, and they were concerned with personal and professional acceptance and status. In general, they had considerable investment in the values of the world. Their lives were hardly in accord with anything that the Course advocates. Helen, the one who received the material, describes herself:
"Psychologist, educator, conservative in theory and atheistic in belief, I was working in a prestigious and highly academic setting. And then something happened that triggered a chain of events I could never have predicted. The head of my department unexpectedly announced that he was tired of the angry and aggressive feelings our attitudes reflected, and concluded that, 'there must be another way.' As if on cue I agreed to help him find it. Apparently this Course is the other way." Although their intention was serious, they had great difficulty in starting out on their joint venture. But they had given the Holy Spirit the "little willingness" that, as
the Course itself was to emphasize again and again, is sufficient to enable Him to use any situation for His purposes and provide it with His power. The names of the collaborators in the recording of the Course do not appear on the cover because the Course can and should stand on its own. It is not intended to become the basis for another cult. Its only purpose is to provide a way in which some people will be able to find their own internal teacher. On January 1 A Course in Miracles group will start with lesson 1 of 365 daily lessons. Join us Thursdays in Rm#301 at 7 pm.

Russell Heiland Thursdays, January 21 – February 25, 1:30 and 7 pm (5 weeks) Location: Rm #300 (daytime), Friendship Hall (evening) In Unity we teach the existence of spiritual laws and principles and are often asked, “Where is the book that lists them?” The “book” is the Metaphysics classes taught in Unity churches and centers. This class is offered in both daytime and evening sections. Both sections will cover the same material. W CommUniteam When we were reading Soul Currency, Ernest Chu wrote about Kiva, a non-profit Internet based microlending organization.
First Unity now has a Kiva team, and we are the first Unity church to have a Kiva team. Kiva members loan money to entrepreneurs in developing countries throughout the world. Members loan $25 or more to entrepreneurs who might be weavers in Cambodia, a farmer in Uganda, a general store owner in El Salvador or a group of bakers in Peru. Although we never meet these people, we see their pictures and read their stories on kiva.org. Ernest Chu says that Kiva “believes that having a relationship with the people to whom we lend brings love
and satisfaction fully into our hearts. Success stories open our hearts, take us out of the self-cherishment mode, and put us into the full flow of our soul currency.” To join, register on www.kiva.org. Then click on “Community”, search for First Unity Church and join our team and make your first loan. When you are a member of a team, the loan remains yours and you receive the repayment. At the same time the loan counts towards our team’s impact. Once you have been repaid, you can loan again to another entrepreneur. You will find this an interesting and rewarding experience for yourself and at the same time help someone else toward increased selfsufficiency and prosperity. We are all interconnected.
