Row, Row, Row Your Boat…. "We stand for God. Our dream is that in our lifetime, every man, woman and child will know what Unity is and know what Unity does." -Rev. Temple and the thriving community of First Unity What a wonderful time of year when we are reminded of the choices for new things and greater possibilities in our lives! More than a year ago, I gave a Sunday message where I said, “I stand for God.” This new paradigm was such a change. I realized that in so many years of my early life, I had learned from my former “religions” that God was unapproachable or not available or someone that I was allowed to contact in times of trouble. How times have changed, with the exposure of the principles of Unity and Religious Science, to know that God is in me, through me, and as me. God is in you, through you and as you in everything you do, say and live as well. Steven Lane Taylor, Unity student in Dallas and author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat, stated his everyday experience of God this way, “The moment I let go that everything had to go my way, suddenly everything did go my way—maybe not the way I expected, but certainly in a way that was to my benefit and to the benefit of all involved. Instead of working against me, it now felt as if the whole world was working for me. I experienced less stress, and more success. I let go. And I experienced the miracle of something called…the flow.” The wonderful divine flow of God that is infinite and unlimited. It is a tremendous paradigm shift for all of us to allow God to evolve in our minds and hearts. This is so necessary to embrace a greater life filled with dreams and potential. We stand for God with joy and enthusiasm through all things. We
stand for God, not conditions, though we are aware that conditions and circumstances will always be happening around us. God is expressing in us, as us and through us at First Unity Church. This declaration continues to be very powerful and continues to create opportunities for us as a church to reach people throughout the nation with our messages. We have several hundred people listening and watching our Sunday messages throughout the globe by means of our websites. This summer, members of our congregation were in Peru and Cuba, spreading Unity love and lessons. In March, we have an incredible opportunity to row our boat, both literally and metaphorically, on the Ocean of Gratitude Cruise. Can you imagine spending a week filled with dynamic inspiration and teachings from Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith, Ricki Byars-Beckwith, myself and many others? We will greet the day with many spiritual activities, including relaxation, meditation and drumming ceremonies. We will row our boat, gently and merrily sharing the consciousness of standing for God in all things and growing in our own inner being. I would love you to consider what being there can give you as a spiritual blessing. In addition, we will all benefit from the energy that you will bring and share with us as well. We will row our boat, gently and merrily down the stream, knowing that life is but a dream. Our dreams await us saying, “Yes.” This is the year in which many amazing Learn more about this exciting blessings are in store for us. cruise adventure with Rev. Talk About Healing One of the legs on which the Unity movement stands is that of health and healing. Our Unity co-founders, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, experienced “impossible” healings of their bodies in response to what they learned and practiced, as they made the journey of discovering just who they really are.
Are you one of the many who “discovered” Unity by way of a health challenge? I am. And when I read and studied Myrtle Fillmore’s book, How to Let God Help You, I knew in my heart that everything I had ever learned about healing Sharon Jebens Bookstore Manager was suddenly obsolete. As Divine Timing would have it, as soon as I handed in my paper at the end of the six-week class (on this book), I joined about 25 other First Unity folks on a week-long retreat to Unity Village in MO. Myrtle’s message had moved me so, that I was certain that my destiny was to become a Unity minister. The time I spent in sacred space at Unity Village (especially in Myrtle’s Grove) showed a different plan. It was revealed to me as appearance and talk by soon as I arrived back Michele O'Donnell home in St. Petersburg. The story of how Michele O’Donnell Author of: Of Monkeys and Dragons, The God that came into my life and We’ve Created, and When the Wolf Is at the Door subsequently into our First Unity family is a small book unto itself, so I will skip the middle 9 & 11 am services | 1:30 pm workshop chapters, and tell you that in October 2002, Tickets are $15 at the door. with the help and You will have an opportunity dedication of many to contribute more during the First Unity volunteers, workshop if you choose. All the first Living Beyond proceeds benefit Living Beyond Disease retreat was held Disease radio ministry. on a beautiful weekend at Eckerd College. One of the highlights of the weekend was a “Walk for the Talk,” which began a fundraising campaign

to broadcast Michele’s radio show in the Tampa Bay area. The walkers solicited sponsors, the course was laid out, and the cause was certain… we walked not against a disease…but for the wholeness and perfection that we already are. Michele’s message echoes Unity’s: There is only one Power, and that Power is Good! Let’s not acknowledge (give power to) something created from a misunderstanding; let’s instead celebrate (and donate to) the human body’s perfection! In January 2003, “Living Beyond Disease,” Michele O’Donnell’s one-hour radio program, began on WHNZ (1250am) in Tampa. Each January since then, Michele returns to Tampa Bay to give her radio audience the opportunity to meet her and hear her speak in person and contribute to the radio ministry. We are grateful to be the venue where she shares her inspiring message. You won’t want to miss her talk on Sunday, January 25, at 1:30 pm in the Sanctuary. Michele will also be speaking at both church services that day. If you would like to know more about Michele O’Donnell, we recommend her first book, Of Monkeys and Dragons. We have a limited number of this book available for you to borrow; just stop in anytime before January 25, and ask for a copy. This book holds the place at Wings Bookstore of the all-time #1 best-seller (since our computer began keeping count of such things in 1996). Of Monkeys and Dragons is an easy-to-read, beautiful testimony to the Unity message of health. Of course, Michele did not know she was Unity when she wrote it. We think she does now… In Health, Sharon Jebens

Reclaiming the Joy of Our Inner Spirit Join Jorge Luis Delgado, expert on Inca heritage, for a retreat on Sunday, February 8 beginning at 1:30 pm. He will teach us how to reclaim the joy of our inner spirit and celebrate our daily life today, in 2012, and beyond.

He carries with him the knowledge of the oral traditions passed to him by the elders of the Inca communities of the Andes. Where are the Kids? Have you ever attended the 11am church service and wondered where all of the children were and what they were doing? Well, they are in their own church service in their respective classrooms, learning about spiritual principles at a level that is specifically geared for them.
Steven Krugler, Youth & Family Ministry Director
So what happens with the kids on Sunday morning? The various articles that follow will answer that question. At this point in time our youth program mainly occurs during the 11am service. We currently have seven classrooms in operation during this service: Nursery (babies through age two), the three and

Starting in January, we will create additional classrooms during the 9 am service for our children. (We currently have one classroom open during the 9am service, the Nursery).
We will also begin expanding our 9 am children’s program. On January 4, we will create a new classroom for those children three years and older. On April 5, we will open another classroom for six years and older. On September 6, we will open an additional classroom during the 9 am service for 4th and 5th graders. This will then give us a full children’s program at the 9 am service. All of these classes will be held in our current 11 am classrooms above Friendship Hall. Our Uniteens and YOU programs are held during the 11 am service. Of course, all of these class openings will depend on new volunteers who are willing to be a part of these teams. If you think you may have a desire to work with our children or youth, please see me after services on Sunday or call me. Blessings, Steven Krugler
First Unity’s Youth and Family Ministry (YFM) Children’s Program by Hazel Madir Uniquely nourishing intriguing, thoughtful, and youthful describe both children and teachers in our children’s program. Each child brings their own Spirit to the program that only they can express. They nurture the Christ light in our teachers. Likewise, the teachers nurture the Christ light of the children by providing their unique talents to convey the lessons to the children. Through intrigue and thought, Sunday lessons are experienced by all. The children are encouraged to hold on to youthful minds and teachers experience a youthful approach to life experiences. YFM provides a Unity experience to children in preK to 5th grade. Each Sunday lesson covers a Unity Principle. The program allows children to participate in developing their unique truth in a safe and fun learning environment.

In October, we completed the Spirit Expressing lessons that were presented to the parents and other congregants of First Unity. Currently we are “Celebrating My God-self ” in a series of lessons in the Unity Living Curriculum. Each lesson covers an age appropriate Bible story or metaphysical children’s story. This allows the students and teachers to explore the metaphysical interpretation in a practical way. Each lesson offers parents a weekly take home sheet to enhance the experience of the lesson. Also, a creative expression is used as a means to make the lesson uniquely nice, nourishing, intriguing, thoughtful and youthful. I really enjoy working with our youth; you can reap the endorphins also. If you have time and a willingness to be uniquely nice, intriguing, thoughtful and youthful, please join us!
Welcome Uniteens by Uniteens leaders Linda McLeod, G. VanGils, Karen Castle and Pete Thibado
What is YOU? by YOU sponsors Laurie Relyea, Lucky & Cindy Guerra and Andi Schenbeck
First Unity Church and the Uniteens leaders are excited about this year’s program. We are embarking on a year of discovery, learning about the Christ spirit within us, the world around us and the many facets of becoming a teenager and/or entering middle school. Uniteens are middle school students between the ages of 11-14. The Uniteens program is comprised of three aspects – Spiritual, Service and Social. Spiritual: Each Sunday a spiritual lesson is offered to assist the Uniteens in understanding spiritual laws and their practical application to daily life. Time is also spent in prayer and meditation. Service: Service ministry is a process of doing something to benefit others and then reflecting on what was done and its impact on the Uniteens. Service ministry is not about fixing someone who is broken. Rather, service allows God’s love to flow through us, so we can discover the awesome experience of doing God’s work and will. Social: Social activities play an important role in the group building process. The Uniteen leaders are preparing a Uniteen program that will help us all grow spiritually and learn to love ourselves more. This year, along with the southeast regional retreats (winter Uniteen retreat is February 6-8) we are planning a local lock-in (a two-day mini-retreat at the church). To attend the retreats, teens will be required to earn service hours and have regularly attendance at Sunday school (11 am to noon on Sundays). The Uniteens will have opportunities to do service projects which will result in earning service hours. The service projects/hours will be two-fold: performing service for the church and secondly in the community. Parents are always welcome to attend any Uniteens event. If you want to learn more about the Uniteens program contact Steven Krugler or Linda McLeod at 804-4610. Adult volunteer opportunities: We are seeking 1 more Uniteen Leader in our program. We also are looking for adults who will assist us in our service projects and fundraising activities.
The Youth of Unity (YOU) is a group of teens ages 14-18 who come together to learn Unity principles, serve the community and share loving spiritual fellowship. Our local YOU chapter is part of the southeast region YOU and is officially chartered through the Association of Unity Churches. The YOU-ers, along with the YOU sponsors, meet on Sunday mornings from 11 am to noon and on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:15 pm in Rm #401. All YOU activities are designed to create a balance of individual study, spiritual lessons, service, and fellowship which involve, motivate, and stimulate young people to be an expression of what they are – children of God. Spiritual: Each Sunday a spiritual lesson is offered to assist the teens in understanding spiritual laws and their practical application to daily life. Time is also spent in prayer and meditation to develop the consciousness of Oneness. YOU-ers may also participate in weekend retreats, which allow for more intensive exploration of their divine nature through group workshops and interaction. Regional rallies are held in November and April. The rallies provide a meaningful spiritual and educational experience for the YOU members and prolonged interaction between the different chapters within the region. Sub-regional lock-ins are usually held twice a year and include discussion around a spiritual theme, informational workshops, community building and socializing activities. Service: YOU teens conduct projects designed to assist their church and community. A service project can be a donation of time, love, and energy to accomplish a good service for others. Each year service projects are developed which address the needs of our YOU chapter, our church, and/or our community. Social: YOU teens believe in celebrating life and appreciating the joy of togetherness. Teens take a leadership role in creating fun activities such as lock-ins, dances, etc. These social experiences provide the teens an opportunity to practice spiritual principles in daily life interactions with their peers. They also provide a loving place to build friendships, develop self-esteem and have a terrific and fun time learning and growing with each other. Adult volunteer opportunities: We currently are looking for two additional sponsors to complement our current team of four sponsors. We are also seeking adults to help us organize and oversee some of our service and fund raising projects. Meet our new YOU Officers on page 13! Youth & Family

The Journey Within: Embracing the Gifts of God
Life Visioning Facilitator: Rev Helen Hornaday Saturday, January 10, 9 am to 2 pm Location: Friendship Hall Life Visioning was developed by Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith to build his church and spiritual community from a few people to 10,000 people and a world-wide spiritual community. In this workshop, you’ll be guided to awake to the divine presence, open to conscious receptivity and your freedom of choice. We’ll be exploring four stages of consciousness and then evolving through the four stages as we move into the visioning process. During life visioning you will access and connect to universal energy as you tap into your soul to envision what wants to emerge and unfold for your highest purpose. Suggested love offering $40. Rev. Helen Hornaday has been using visualization for more than 25 years, and it has been powerful. You manifest what you see and feel. Visioning is different because you allow yourself to open to receive and let what wants to emerge unfold. They both have their place in our spiritual practices.
