Let Your Spirit Express
Rev. Temple Hayes, Senior Minister
"Life is constantly in
a place of change, and
the ones who meet this process with the least amount of resistance are always the most peaceful and happy in everyday life."
"Our spiritual assets are forms of love, like members of a grand orchestra whose purpose is to interpret Spirit’s essence. The way we use these assets and the beliefs we have about them give us a sense of 'personalness.' Because these assets seem to be coming from us as individuals, we often fail to realize they are, in fact, part of the universal energy." – Ernest Chu, author of Soul Currency Dear friends, It’s that time of year again…Spirit Expressing! Are you ready to express who you are at a deeper level? (see more details on pg 6.) One of our greatest abilities as divine human beings is the ability to be creative in the midst of changing times and circumstances. Life is constantly in a place of change and the ones who meet this process with the least amount of resistance are always the most peaceful and happy in everyday life. Recently, I was asked by the Association of Unity Churches to write an article on healthy transition and to share with other ministries the process which Rev. Alan and I used to have such incredible results. I felt as I was writing the article such a strong sense of gratitude towards all the teams at our church who played a part in creating such a wonderful consciousness, which continued to flow in the midst of change. All of us as a congregation used the spiritual assets which Ernie Chu teaches in his book, Soul Currency.
The four types of spiritual assets that he writes about are: • • • •
Intuition and Guidance Creativity Higher Personality Traits Cultivated Skills and Knowledge
These assets are within each of us as individuals, just like they were with our congregation during our ministerial transition. As we focus and expand our awareness of how valuable these traits are, we can face changes in life with the least amount of stress and create the lives we dream of. These are just a few of the spiritual nuggets which you will ponder during our seven-week Spirit Expressing program. I personally want to invite each of you to join a Spirit Expressing group this year. No matter where you are in your life, invest the time to discover at a deeper level how to manifest the magnificent you.
Loving life, Temple

Minister's Message
W Men of Unity
Wholeness and oneness are common themes within the Unity movement. Wholeness implies that each one of us is created in the image and likeness of God, and oneness implies that each one of us is part of the other. Yet in many ways and for many reasons men in our culture experience challenges in integrating and living from these truths. All too often, men feel separated from and threatened by each other, when in reality what we want and need is the deep friendship and wisdom offered by other men and the “tribal elders.” Beginning Monday, August 3 Rev. Russell Heiland, along with Jeff Belyea, Lucky Guerra, Bruce Mills, Peter Thibado and David Swindall, will facilitate "The Men of Unity" group at First Unity. This group is an intentional gathering of men in which we will explore our spirituality
and humanity in a safe and sacred setting. All men of our community are encouraged to participate in the affirmative and empowering energy of true fraternity. Men interested in participating are encouraged, though not required, to read the following materials available at Wings: Under Saturn’s Shadow, the Wounding and Healing of Men by James Hollis and The Hidden Spirituality of Men by Matthew Fox. A love offering will be received at each gathering. This group will meet every Monday at 7:15 pm in Friendship Hall.
First Unity 101—Sunday, July 26 Do you have questions about First Unity Church? Join us for a fun, informational, complimentary 30-minute session with Rev. Temple Hayes in the Sanctuary at 12:30 pm. She will discuss frequently asked questions and familiarize you with our church. Topics that will be covered: • First Unity Church’s vision and history • What we value • Information on programs, groups and ministries • How to get involved

From “Television” to “Tell-A-Vision”
Steven Krugler Youth & Family Ministry Director
"We are growing and expanding thanks to you! Please join
us for these fun activities or consider volunteering with the children."
Over the past year, our YFM (Youth & Family Ministry) has almost doubled in size. The majority of our teachers have made a commitment to be here every Sunday – whenever possible – resulting in a Sunday program that is rich in spiritual awareness and understanding. We recently have extended our children’s program to include family events throughout the week such as our Easter Celebration where we had more than 100 kids and adults participating. One of our goals in YFM is to help the children and youth move from a position of being told what to do and say (“Television”) to a position where they are consciously creating a spiritually rich vision and sharing their vision with the world (“Tell-A-Vision”).
development, we are offering congregants the opportunity to support our children’s spiritual growth by “Sponsoring a Teacher” and paying all or part of the cost for a teacher to attend this retreat.
How You Can Help YFM (Youth & Family Ministry) will be having our first teacher weekend retreat August 7-9 at DaySpring Episcopal Conference Center in Ellenton, Florida. This will be an exciting time for all teachers with workshops on Unity principles, prayer and meditation, classroom management techniques, multiple intelligences, curriculum creation and age appropriate presentations, journaling, MasterMind introduction, plus child-friendly games and activities that can be used in the classrooms for our more active learners. Realizing the importance of our children’s spiritual growth and development and the critical role our teachers play in this
Sponsor a Teacher Help send our children's spiritual leaders to this important retreat by donating a full scholarship of $180 per teacher, a partial scholarship of $90 per teacher, or donate any amount that you can towards this cause. Please call Steven Krugler at 527-2222 x109 or email youth@ firstunity.org for more information.

Tap Into Your Soul Currency Each fall First Unity friends come together for Spirit Expressing, a seven-week program of spiritual selfdiscovery with an emphasis on growth in awareness, involvement, and commitment. It includes Sunday messages based on Soul Currency by Ernest Chu, the powerful book we have chosen for our study and weekly prayer/study groups. You are invited to join together with a small group of your choice, discussing the same spiritual ideas presented on Sundays during those seven weeks and to participate in many delightful events.
What is the purpose of “Spirit Expressing?” This powerful program unites our First Unity family while it encourages personal development through leadership, teamwork and group activities. The program’s scope is directed towards all of our congregants, including our increasing number of families with children. Spirit Expressing is an opportunity-filled program for you, your friends, and your family to help yourselves and our church flourish. What will we do during Spirit Expressing? Following the chapters of the book, you will use a journal to guide you through many exercises and processes throughout the program. During the seven weeks of Spirit Expressing, we have a fun tradition – each week we wear clothing of a particular color to Sunday services (see chart on pg 7). Feel free to join in the fun! Where do I get the book and workbook? The book, Soul Currency, can be purchased at Wings Bookstore. Workbooks will be given to your facilitators prior to your first meeting. For individuals who choose not to join a home study group, workbooks will be available after Sunday services beginning August 30 (while supplies last.)
How do I sign up for a home study group? Home study groups (8–10 people) offer the opportunity for a more in-depth study of the book and the concepts presented each Sunday. These groups provide a safe space in which to explore and practice God’s activity on a personal level. Each group study is led by a facilitator who assists the group in reviewing and exploring the central topics and themes. Hosts hold groups in their homes, and groups are held in many locations throughout Tampa Bay, and at a variety of times and days of the week. You may sign up

August 2-23 for a group located near you by visiting the sign-up table in Friendship Hall. What are Facilitators and Hosts? A facilitator is someone who assists the home study group in reviewing and exploring the central topics and themes. The facilitator establishes an environment that is conducive to discussion and learning, while keeping the group focused on its purpose. Beyond that, the facilitator is just another member of the group. A Spirit Expressing host is someone who opens up their home for the home study groups, consisting of 8-10 people. Sign ups will be available for hosts and facilitators July 19 & 26 in Friendship Hall. What are the benefits of this program? Participation in the program benefits you and First Unity Church by promoting spiritual awareness and consciousness. It helps you clarify values, purpose, priorities, and goals. A vehicle for Spirit to work through us all as we participate, Spirit Expressing is also a wonderful way for you to meet people and make friends. Out Of Town? You can experience Spirit Expressing along with your St. Petersburg church family. Follow these simple steps: 1. Visit WingsBookstore.com or call Wings Bookstore to order Soul Currency at (727) 522-6657. 2. Call us at (727) 527-2222 x100 to order your workbook. 3. On the other hand, if developed and leveraged, that one thing has the potential to create unparalleled success and prosperity in every dimension of life. An Evening of Awakening Saturday, August 8 in the Sanctuary, 6 to 10 pm
Buddha & Bhavani
Angelika
For the third year in a row, First Unity and Rev. Michael Milner welcome Buddha and Bhavani to shower blessings upon our community. Oneness Blessing (Deeksha) leads to eventual awakening, oneness or enlightenment, as the Divine reaches out to each of us to dissolve the illusion of separateness. Deeksha actually initiates a neurobiological change in the brain that enables the senses to be free from the interference of the mind, causing inner calmness, spontaneous feelings of joy, and a flowering of the heart. The Oneness Movement believes that the solution to humanity's suffering can only be found through each individual being elevated to a state of causeless love and limitless joy, to transfer him or her into an awakened state of Oneness. Buddha & Bhavani live in New Zealand. Buddha was born in Cajun country Louisiana. He began his spiritual journey 40 years ago, and was one of Osho’s personal bodyguards for many years. Later he worked with dolphin-assisted therapy, exploring the potential of people being transformed by the unconditional love, peace, bliss and higher
intelligence of dolphins and whales. Bhavani was born in the UK and has been on her spiritual journey for 20 years. She trained extensively in rebirthing, breath work, A Course in Miracles, as well as various forms of body work and healing methodologies. She has always had a love for nature and the planet, and she started facilitating dolphinassisted therapy tours, where meditation, breath work, body work, environmental education and dolphin encounters opened people up to their true essence. Buddha & Bhavani now travel all over the world together sharing the Oneness Blessing with thousands, helping mankind and nature shift to a higher level of consciousness. The Oneness Blessing begins at 6 pm and immediately following there will be a one-hour concert featuring Angelika. Her music is deeply soothing, inspiring and heart-opening. Tickets for the Oneness Blessing and the concert are $40. Front row reserved seating is available for $50. Purchase tickets online at WingsBookstore.com or call 522-6657. Featured Events

The Journey Within: Embracing the Gifts of God
Myrtle and Charles Fillmore’s Teachings on Healing and Wholeness, Part 2 Facilitator: Rev. Russell Heiland Thursdays, July 9 – August 6, 1:30 pm & 7 pm (5 weeks) Location: Room #301 This is the second and final part of this course based on the spiritual and universal principles that support the expression of health and wholeness in our minds, bodies and affairs. We continue to work with Myrtle and Charles Fillmore’s interpretation of how Jesus used and demonstrated those in his own life. Such laws and principles will be presented to support participants in developing a practical understanding of Myrtle and Charles’ theology as heart centered metaphysicians. It is our expectation that through the development of such practical understanding, participants will be inspired to become heart-centered metaphysicians also. We also expect them to continue to develop a “tool kit” for using healing principles in their daily lives and in supporting other people in their own healing processes. This class is offered with day and evening sections, 1:30 to 3:30 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The content of both sections will be the same. If you did not take part 1, you may enroll in this class; however, you must contact Rev. Russell at 527-2222 x110 or russell@firstunity.org to receive a list of your additional required readings.
Facilitator: Rev. Helen Hornaday Mondays: July 13 - August 31, 7 to 9 pm (8 weeks) Location: Room #300 You are invited to come and explore, create, express, release, uncover, discover, ignite and acknowledge your creative spirit. Whether you are an active creative artist or think you don't have a creative bone in your body, please join other creative spirits ready for an adventure in the now. The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is our text. Suggested love offering, $15 per class. Rev. Helen experienced this course, taught by Julia Cameron, with 40 other artists 11 years ago in Taos, New Mexico. Allowing more of her "artist within" to emerge shifted her life and she delights in facilitating this class again. She has been facilitating classes in spirituality, personal growth and living the creative life for more than 30 years. Everyone is welcome to come and join others who are open to the wondrous possibilities of divine expression in a safe and sacred space.

Russell Heiland Tuesdays, July 14 – August 25, 7 to 9 pm (7 weeks) Location: Sanctuary Are you ready for the “advanced course in prosperity consciousness building?” Creator of the course, ordained Religious Science Minister David Owen Ritz, says, “This course will help make the connection between giving and receiving using Jesus' profound prosperity lesson in Luke 12:22-34 as a foundation. Healing With Stones and Crystals
Bible Overview: Christian Scriptures Facilitator: Rev. Russell Heiland Thursdays, August 20 – September 24, 1:30 pm & 7 pm Location: Rm #301 Bible Overview: Christian Scriptures explores the gospels, letters, history (book of Acts), and apocryphal literature (book of Revelation) that comprise what is more commonly known as the “New Testament” of the Judeo-Christian Bible. This is not a course in metaphysical Bible interpretation. A primary purpose of the course is to develop an understanding of the Christian scriptures’ meaning for the people to whom they were written. This course is based on the premise that, whatever else the Christian scriptures may be, they most definitely are the response of early Christian writers to both the person and the message of Jesus Christ. Understanding the Christian scriptures as a testament about Jesus Christ rather than a testament of Jesus Christ frees us to appreciate and become inspired by the powerful faith of these first followers of the Way. This class is offered with day and evening sections, 1:30 to 3:30 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The content of both sections will be the same. Required texts: The Bible (New Revised Standard Version required) and Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, both available at Wings Bookstore. Suggested love offering $15 per class. To receive SEE credit, there is a $36 registration fee and an additional testing fee.
Facilitator: Kathi Wahls Tuesdays, August 4 – September 8, 7 to 9 pm Location: Rm #300 in The Learning Center
A Note About Childcare
Crystals and gemstones have been used and revered since the beginning of time. They have been found in graves, tombs, ruins and temples all over the world. There are many references to stones and crystals in the Bible. In this class, we will explore the healing properties of gemstones and crystals. Discussions will include; individual stones, their properties and uses, choosing stones, caring for and cleaning your stones, protection and grounding, chakras and the energy body, remote healing, laying stones on the body and much more. This is a hands-on class. Everyone will have an opportunity to view and experience many different types of gemstones and crystals and participants will be doing healings on each other. Suggested love offering $99 for six classes or $20 per class.
Reservations for childcare must be made seven working days prior to the class/event by contacting Dianna Collins at 527-2222 x107. Childcare is available for $5/child, $10/per family. To provide childcare, there must be reservations for a minimum of four children.
Kathi Wahls is a licensed massage therapist and certified natural health professional. She has been doing bodywork and crystal healings since 1987. A dedicated teacher and student, she loves to share her knowledge of natural health, alternative therapies and spiritual practices.
First Unity recognizes the value in providing childcare during classes, events and programs at the church. To do so in a way that supports our commitment to wise stewardship of our shared resources, it is important that everyone understand our childcare practices.

For World Prosperity

uring WWI, Unity School set aside a period at 11 am each day to pray for peace. At the sounding of a gong each Unity worker stood at their desk and prayed for peace. The word was sent out through our publications, and all Unity readers were asked to join with us at that hour in prayer for universal peace. Peace came, but the eleven o'clock prayer service had become so much a part of the "Unity consciousness" that the hour is still being set apart for a prayer service. One of our readers who understands the power of prayer and the value of cooperation in prayer has written to us, asking that we publish in each of our magazines a thought for prosperity, to be held by all Unity people everywhere. The prosperity thought for this month: "My mind is stayed on Thee as my unfailing resource, and I am in all ways prospered," is being held daily at high-noon silence conducted by Myrtle Fillmore in the Unity chapel. We are asking that all Unity readers set aside a few minutes each day at high noon to pray for the prosperity of the world. Leading economists are agreed that the present financial depression is the result of fear. With our minds stayed on God as our unfailing resource, we can have no fear of lack. Will you join with us each day at high noon in holding this month's prosperity prayer: "My mind is stayed on Thee as my unfailing resource, and I am in all ways prospered." All Unity Center leaders have been notified of this daily prayer service and have been asked to have their members cooperate with the readers of Unity periodicals and the workers at Unity headquarters.
connection to our history and our
ancestors in the Unity movement. We felt the message is as appropriate to us now as it was on December 27, 1930. We ask for your support in increasing the vibration of peace and prosperity in our world by joining with us each day at 11 am to pray together. Wherever you are, set your watch to beep or phone to remind you, and take a moment to affirm the goodness of this life for all. Let's also affirm the following together for the next two months, until our next edition of The Heart Connection. The presence of God is within and around me. I am alive with creative energy, awake to prospering ideas, and open to unlimited goodness. Until then, dear friends, we give thanks for you and your presence and love at Unity Campus!

Be a Trash “Basher" An easy way to "green" your household is to be a "Trash Basher." Is your trash can or recycle bin full of junk mail? Could you cut down on disposables, including items with excess packaging? Notice the next time you're at the store or supermarket and keep that in mind.
Don't forget your canvas bag when you're out shopping at ALL STORES! Ever considered starting a compost pile to enrich your soil? Could some of your garbage be recycled, or better yet, reused? Always remember the 3 R's-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
