We move in rhythms and cycles. We experience joys and sorrows, ease and discomfort. I have told my sons - young men now - that life will surely put something distasteful on our plate from time to time. Life is like that. Our job is to figure out how we want to respond. Our job is to see the opportunity for transformation and step into the possibility of co-creating a life of joy, freedom, peace, and compassion. The Sufi poet and mystic, Rumi, tells us

4T: Tithing of Time, Talent & Treasure for Prosperity and the Fullness of Life with Rev. Temple Hayes begins January 28. This 12-week program is a course in commitment and prosperity transformation, that is truly lifechanging!
true human beings know:
The moment you accept what trouble you’ve been given, the door opens.
Change is not easy. Letting go can be the hardest thing we do. Accepting what is, embracing it, and loving it for what it can bring us? Whew! It’s why I take classes and attend Spirit Expressing groups. To be reminded of my power. We say that we believe we are spiritual beings. We say that we are children of God. I need reminding of what that means. Often. Before I knew what co-creating meant, I cocreated a home for my family. Yes, I manifested an actual house. I was practicing “Ask and It is Given” before I knew that book existed; before The Secret was out; before I attended my first 4T class and learned the process.
I know now that I was on the exact emotional wavelength needed to attract what I wanted. I visualized, I allowed myself to feel what it would feel like to live in a home of our own. I cut out pictures and pasted them on poster board. I prayed in gratitude for the gift of a home in which to raise my sons after their father and I divorced. After the bankruptcy, the foreclosure, and the repossessions. After being laid off from a wonderful job. After all the things had happened that should have made such a gift impossible. But it did happen. Ask Carol Hasbrouck. I met her in 1997 when she was willing to take a chance on me and worked to get me a mortgage. Just part of the “how” that God was taking care of. So, by the time this newsletter is printed, I trust that I will be enrolled in the next 4T class. It will be my fourth. Because I need to be reminded of the power inherent in my spiritual nature. Won’t you join me? Let’s practice some alchemy together! Beverley McLain

The Prayer Chest
I
I’d like to tell you about an unlikely book. Unlikely, because it may not fit into that big-newest-spiritual/metaphysical-energy-busting category that should be a prerequisite for a featured book review.
Sharon Jebens, Bookstore Manager
“Treat yourself to a copy of The Prayer Chest...and you will easily have finished it before Rev. Temple begins her Sunday series on January 6.
The Prayer Chest gives your mind a rest from the blockbuster excitement of some of our newest books. The Prayer Chest has a sweetness and homegrown heartfelt-ness, sort of like comfort food for the soul. The thing I liked best was the gentle way it presents and embodies so many of our Truth principles within its story line. The Prayer Chest, by August Gold and Joel Fotinos, is a novel. The front cover features the ubiquitous key on a red background that has become a common symbol since the release of The Secret last year (could it be possible that The Secret is but one year old?) But this key is different. This short story is about prayer, and how prayer works. It is rich in romance, symbolism, and spiritual insight. Spanning at least three
generations, the story allows the reader to observe the wisdom that passes through generations of a family, by way of the secrets held in a hand-carved prayer box with a golden key. Many readers will identify with Joseph Hutchinson's story of misfortune, fear, and adversity. Unity and New Thought readers will not be surprised at how his life turns around as he begins to trust the secrets he uncovers in the prayer box. Treat yourself to a copy of The Prayer Chest right after the holidays, and you will easily have finished it before Rev. Temple begins her Sunday series on January 6. May all your prayers be answered, Sharon

Living Beyond Disease On January 20, First Unity welcomes back one of our favorite authors, Michele O’Donnell. Her first book, Of Monkeys and Dragons, has been one of the best-selling books at our bookstore since Michele first began speaking at First Unity in 2001. In October 2002, we sponsored Michele’s first weekend retreat at Eckerd College, which included a Wellness Walk that raised the funds to begin her “Living Beyond Disease” radio program on the air in Tampa. Since then, the Living Beyond Disease retreat has become an annual event each February near San Antonio, Texas. And the radio program, which airs here each Sunday at 9am on WHNZ 1250am, continues to gain popularity and inspire listeners. Michele has since become a sought-after speaker at Unity churches all over the country, including many appearances at Unity Village, MO. Wings Bookstore is a major sponsor of the radio program, and the First Unity/Michele
O’Donnell connection continues even stronger, as Tampa Bay listeners make the connection between her inspiring program and Unity truth principles. Michele will be speaking at both First Unity services on Sunday, January 20, followed by a workshop at 1pm that afternoon. Afternoon admission is minimum $30 love offering. Proceeds go to support and sustain the Living Beyond Disease radio show in Tampa. Meet the author on Saturday! Michele O’Donnell will be at Wings Bookstore on Saturday afternoon, January 19, 4 - 6 pm to sign books.

The Prayer that God Prays
H
Have you ever considered the idea that God prays? I had never thought of such a possibility until one night, during a time of prayer and meditation, this thought drifted through my mind: Your life is a prayer that I am praying.
This one affirmation sent me on a journey into prayer and the kingdom of God that has blessed me in countless ways. On Sunday, February 24, I am honored to serve as your guest minister for the 9 & 11 am services, and at 1 pm I invite you to join me for my workshop “The Prayer That God Prays.” During our workshop, I would like to share with you the journey and its fruits. It is a mind-
and-heart expanding experience to consider that our lives could actually be God’s prayer. Come and join us as we journey into uncharted territory of mystical prayer, for it brings us the life of love, peace, and joy for which we have always yearned. This workshop is based on my book, The Prayer That God Prays, available at Wings Bookstore.

WE LOVE OUR ADVERTISERS!
The “Next Generation”
S
Sometimes in our lives, young adults need a space and time to put aside all the stress of college or work or personal relationships and re-center ourselves. We need a place to go where we can let go of all the outer tensions and remember how joyful it is to be a young and powerful child of God in this beautiful world. And it helps if there are others like us there to share it with. And maybe food.
The Next Generation of First Unity (NGU) provides just that for us! Our purpose is to empower ourselves through service, prayer, and personal education to embrace our spiritual potential. Service to our church and community enriches the lives of all involved. Prayer and meditation help us throw off those pesky adult stresses and reconnect with our inner mystic child.
And every so often we do stuff just to have fun and be with friends. We invite everyone from the ages of 18 to 35 to join us on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in Rm #301. We do try to provide food for these weekly meetings as often as funds will allow. Please come join us and help build a group which will enrich our lives and community!

Charitable Giving— the Spirit of Sharing
I
It is said that one is remembered not by the resources one has left at the end of one’s life, but rather by what one has given away during one’s lifetime. Such gifts include the simple, intangible things - love for family, friendship with those of similar mindset, a desire to assist those less fortunate – as well as tangible gifts to the charitable organizations of our choice. Each of us supports our chosen church which, in turn, supports our community. Some of us do this by volunteering and others by contributing to the financial needs of the church. It’s funny. When we were younger, we did not believe that we could change the world in which we lived. The adults made every decision. Local culture dictated behavior. It seemed like the only way to make a difference was to do the opposite of what was expected of us. If short hair was in, long hair was what we wanted. If conservative clothes were the norm, then paisley prints must be the right choice. Somewhere along that path, as our hair got shorter and our clothes got more expensive and conservative, we realized that the culture in which we lived was normal after all, and truly reflected the people living in it. We learned that things are done the way they are not to keep people from being themselves, but rather to foster an environment where more people can enjoy the world and each other. But who creates this environment? Now we know that we all do. The actions chosen by each one of us do make a difference. We realize that we cannot let others take responsibility for our community. We must take responsibility for the world and the community in which we live. It is our voices; it is the pledge of our time and efforts; and it is the funding of institutions like our church that make a true difference in the community. Our church is a focal point for those who share the same ideals and goals, a beacon for those who have lost their way and an incubator for the youth of our community. It is a temporary respite on Sunday morning where meaningful words (rather than music on the radio and the media’s bombardment in creating artificial needs for this sneaker, that shirt, that electronic game) are allowed to permeate our thoughts and our hearts. This house of God, your church, has the same financial needs as your own family and your own household. You hear about and read the financial reports. The electric bill is due. The water bill is due. The landscaping needs to be maintained. The roof needs repair. There is a mission to fund.
by Edward C. Castagna Jr., Esq.
It is up to you to support your church, to make a difference in this community. And there is no better time than now, at the end of the year, to make those charitable gifts. Donations made to your church will provide you with a tax savings to keep your money in your own backyard rather watching it funnel away to the government. The technical side of charitable giving is fairly easy: Cash - This is the most convenient method and this will, of course, provide a deduction which you can itemize on your income tax return. Credit card – Yes, you can use your credit card to make a donation to your church. The gift is considered completed as of the date that the charge is made to your credit card. The IRS considers a credit card payment the same as a cash donation. Checks - Contributions paid by check are considered to be completed when you put the check in the mail. Your check mailed and postmarked on December 31, 2007 would be treated as a 2007 gift for purposes of a charitable deduction. Stock - If you have stock that you have held for more than one year, this might be the time to consider donating it to the church. Appreciated stock would give the donor a charitable deduction for the value of the stock and avoid payment of capital gains tax. Say, for example, you obtained stock many years ago for which you paid $500. It is now worth $15,000. If you donate this stock to the church, you would get a total deduction of $15,000; plus, you would pay no capital gains on the $14,500 in appreciation. This charitable deduction can be used to offset other gains on the sale of other stock held in your portfolio. There are some limitations, but there is also a carryover for the benefit of any charitable contribution which will not be fully utilized in the same year. Additionally, stock that has lost value can provide you with another opportunity for tax savings as you can deduct the loss in value of your stock and obtain a charitable deduction for the current market value. IRA’s – IRA accounts provide a special tax deduction of $100,000 if you meet certain requirements. Insurance Policies - You can donate an insurance policy to your church and get a charitable deduction for the cash value of the policy. Employer Matching - Many companies have an employer matching program where you can identify your church and the ...continued on pg 16

Our group of more than 30, both active and Emeritus Chaplains have recently completed their annual Chaplain retreat and dedication and are so excited about the new year! We are grateful for the opportunity to serve this church community and for the avenues of spiritual growth that are continually revealed to us as individuals. Being fully present is a gift anyone can give to themselves at any time – taking just a moment to sit still and breathe in deeply, and then releasing. The mind is quieted and the heart is soothed and calmed, as we connect with our Christ self. Each time you ask a Chaplain to pray with you, you are giving them the gift of being present with you – being present with their Christ self. We are so uplifted by the experience of the spiritual sharing that takes place. We’re asking for your assistance as we begin this new year. Our goal is to connect with every member of the church each month
as we make our prayer support calls. Information changes as individuals move and change phone numbers. To help us update our member files, please complete the perforated section of the weekly church bulletin or call the church office at 527-2222 x505 if you have moved or changed your phone number in the last couple of years. We don’t want to miss anyone. Thank you for the loving support you have given the Prayer Chaplain program. We feel your love as we continue to grow, expand, and embrace our Oneness with all that is – with you.
Prayer Chaplains have completed a minimum of 50 hours of training and are available for one-on-one prayer before and after each Sunday service. All that is shared is kept in strict confidence. The Prayer Chaplains also conduct a Prayer & Healing Service every Wednesday evening from 6:30 – 7 pm in the Sanctuary. If it’s a quiet, meditative space you are seeking, this is the service for you. Join us!
What Unity Means to Me
A
A statement I love from author Joel S. Goldsmith is “I always practice the Presence.” Before coming to First Unity, I had deep roots in Religious Science. The first time I entered First Unity in 2002 I knew I was where I needed to be based on the messge I received and the powerful energy and loving atmosphere. I say “thank you, First Unity” for that day. In 2003 I knew it was time to make my connection from head to heart, which is only 18 inches. Unity has always given me love, support, encouragement and most of all prayer, along with wisdom to overcome any challenge in life, knowing Unity’s loving presence is

always there. Unity never limits love or prayer, and I appreciate the powerful Chaplain program. In consciousness, I know I am connected to a wonderful Source that is always available, always reliable, because I live in a constantlyevolving universe which knows no limitations. There are no obstacles to my success. I thank Unity for giving me the gifts to uncover my spiritual nature and my connection to God and the universe. I would like to say again thank you for your prayers. Thank you for your presence. And thank you for your love. Always. And so it is! PRAYER & UNIT Y

employer will match any contributions you make up to a certain amount. Real Property Donation - If you have held real property for more than one year, you can donate it to your church and obtain a deduction worth the full fair market value of the property. This is subject to a limitation of 50% of your adjusted gross income, but any excess deduction can be carried forward for up to ďŹ ve years. In fact, you can donate your home to the church and retain a life estate for you and your spouse and possibly qualify for a charitable deduction equal to the residual value of the home. Tangible Personal Property - You can make donations of artwork, coin collections, stamp collections and other items of value. If you have a collection that you feel your family members may have no wish to continue, the collection can be donated and a charitable collection obtained. If you have a piece of sculpture or artwork which is not to your taste, perhaps a donation of this asset would be a good use of its value. Charitable Trust - Charitable trusts can provide income for your life while providing a donation to the charity of your choice. There are a number of dierent kinds of these vehicles. Charitable trusts allow you to transfer assets to the next generation at a reduced cost. Charitable gift annuities allow you to make contributions while retaining a ďŹ xed annual income. A charitable remainder trust is a great way to provide for your family and its needs now and for the church in the future. The trust can be used with highly appreciated assets that may not generate a lot of income. Very often the income can be signiďŹ cantly increased while avoiding capital gains and still remain entitled to a total deduction on the rate of return in the trust. We will talk more about charitable trusts and how they can be easily structured later. This is provided for informational purposes only and is not intended to be legal, tax or ďŹ nancial advice. You should consult with your legal and tax advisors when considering charitable gifts. May the spirit of sharing be with you during this joyous holiday season.

The Art of Pilgrimage First Unity Church – Power of Peru tour – August 7 – 17, 2008 (optional five-day extension to Lake Titicaca)
“Pilgrimage is an art which brings peace to the soul. Pilgrims are bearers of love, which they carry to special places of the Earth. By holding a joyful consciousness of this love and of the beauty of these places, pilgrims encourage the natural energies of the earth to flow harmoniously. Pilgrims are guided by a wisdom based on both intuition and an understanding of the energy routes and sacred places of power in the world. The gifts of love, hope and joy are inestimable. They have the power to be a friend with the earth, with the divine and with all levels of life.” -Peter Dawkins

Travel and share the journey with Rev. Temple and other like-minded people on a personal and spiritual quest in this church travel experience. Tour organizer Gayle Lawrence, Rev. Temple Hayes and Jorge Luis Delgado, Peruvian shaman and guide will share ceremonies, group experience and healing work during this journey.
