BENU® Recycled
Living sustainability in fabrics and carpets
“We have to recognise that used plastics are not simply waste but valuable resources that can be reused or recycled.”
At Fischbacher 1819, sustainability and social responsibility are not trends but fundamental values ingrained in our ethos. Architects and interior designers choose us knowing that our products consistently meet the rigorous ethical, aesthetic, and functional standards of modern interior design.
Beyond mere beauty - recycled fabrics are in no way inferior to conventional fabrics in terms of their properties
We have integrated textiles made from recycled raw materials into our portfolio for many years. In 2009, we were among the first textile producers to introduce decorative and upholstery fabrics using recycled PET and fabric remnants from the fashion industry through our BENU® Recycled collection. Since then, we have consistently driven material innovation, actively seeking sustainable solutions to reuse raw materials effectively and reduce CO2 emissions.
Our journey into recycled fabrics began in 2009 with the pioneering efforts of our Creative Director, Camilla Douraghy Fischbacher. She undertook the challenge of transforming consumer and industry waste into aesthetically pleasing and functional textiles, seamlessly integrating them into the Fischbacher 1819 product range. Central to her vision was reshaping perceptions to underscore that used plastic and discarded textiles are not mere waste but a valuable source of raw materials.
As leaders in sustainable fabric development, we have earned industry recognition for our commitment, with numerous awards honoring our BENU® Recycled collection. We take pride in offering sustainable textiles that meet the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship, setting a benchmark for the industry.
The collection is divided into four different categories of recycled fabrics:
BENU® INDUSTRY
BENU® YARN
BENU® PET
BENU® SEA
“We are actively committed to an environmentally sound and sustainable future. The desire to make a positive contribution to the environment has accompanied us in the development of our BENU® Recycled fabrics from the very beginning and drives us to continue to keep our finger on the pulse of developments in the field. The numerous awards we have received for BENU® Recycled confirm our efforts as pioneers in this field.”
MICHAEL FISCHBACHER
BENU® Industry
Textiles from the BENU® INDUSTRY collection are made from recycled yarn remnants, which are produced during the manufacture of Trevira polyester yarn. Instead of disposing of these, they are reprocessed, recycled and processed into Trevira yarn. The optimised use of materials and recycling of pre-consumer industrial waste ensures the responsible use of important resources and thereby reduces the ecological footprint in yarn production.
BENU® Yarn
The fabrics in the BENU® YARN collection are made from recycled textile waste from the fashion industry. The offcuts from garment factories are sorted by colour, shredded into their original fibre form, carded and spun into a new, high-quality recycled yarn. This process eliminates the need for dyeing, so significantly less energy is used, no additional dyeing chemicals are needed and no waste water is produced. The use of recycled textile waste can help to greatly reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry. Compared to conventional materials, energy consumption can be reduced by ca. 50% and water consumption by ca. 90% in the production process of BENU Yarn fabrics.

BENU® Pet
The BENU® PET collection uses polyester obtained from used (post-consumer) PET plastic bottles. The bottles are collected, cleaned, ground, melted down and spun into high-quality polyester yarn. By recycling the petroleum-based plastic, valuable resources can be saved.
Compared to the production of conventional polyester, the production of BENU recycled polyester requires less energy and chemicals, and it reduces the impact on global warming by approximately 30% (according to the Higgs Index).
BENU® PET fabrics have received the Design+Technology Award, the Red Dot Award, the Design Plus - MaterialVision Award from the German Design Council, as well as the Interior Innovation Award.

BENU® Sea
For the production of BENU® SEA fabrics and carpets, plastic waste fished from the sea is processed into a hard-wearing polyester yarn in a resource-saving process.
Compared to products made from conventional polyester, BENU® SEA is in no way inferior in terms of quality and processing possibilities and meets Fischbacher 1819‘s high standards of design and quality.
With BENU® SEA, we are making a contribution to the cleaning up of our oceans by recycling non-degradable waste products. We actively support the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE, which works with local fishermen, NGOs and volunteers to clean our oceans of marine debris. The polyester yarn SEAQUAL® YARN, consists of a considerable and constantly increasing proportion of “Recycled Marine Plastic”, i.e. processed marine plastic waste. The remaining share comes from recycled PET bottles.
SEAQUAL® YARN is particularly easy-care, crease-resistant and hard-wearing and is therefore a versatile and sustainable alternative to newly produced polyester. Fischbacher 1819 has won the Swiss Design Award for the BENU® SEA collection.
